New multi-role ship to patrol West PH Sea

Economy likely grew 7 pct in first half: DBS MANILA - The economy likely grew at least 7 percent in the first six months of the year, driven by a surge in imports, DBS Bank said Thursday. Second quarter growth was expected to surpass the bank’s 5.8-percent forecast, Singapore-based DBS said in a statement. It set a full-year growth forecast of 6.3 percent. Gross domestic product grew 6.9 percent in the first quarter, beating analysts’ expectations and outpacing China. “If import growth was to come in robust again in June, seven percent may not be out of reach after all,” DBS said. While import growth will be sustained, it was unlikely to top last year’s expansion of 14 percent, it said.-ABS-CBN

MANILA - One of 10 multi-role response vessels (MRRV) acquired from Japan is expected to arrive on Aug. 18 and undertake its first patrol mission in the West Philippine Sea for the coast guard. The vessel, to be named BRP Tubbataha, may be deployed beyond the 12-nautical mile territorial water limit in the western seaboard if necessary, Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commander Armand Balilo said yesterday. The PCG is beefing up its patrol capability in the West Philippine Sea in the face of Chinese encroachment on areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. “It is a Coast Guard vessel. It is a multi-role vessel and it would perform Coast Guard functions. Considering that the Philippine Coast Guard is being asked to (help) in the West Philippine Sea, if the Department of Transportation

(DOTr) would instruct us to patrol beyond the 12 nautical miles, then we would deploy a ship and it is possible that we would use the BRP Tubbataha,” said Balilo. The Tubbataha and the nine other MRRVs would be classified as “parola (lighthouse)” class vessels, and named after lighthouses. The Tubbataha Reef, a marine reservation area in Palawan, has a lighthouse similarly named. The new vessel is 44 meters long and has a depth of four meters. Its maximum approximate speed is 25 knots. Twenty-five PCG personnel will man the ship. The MRRV is equipped with special features for search and rescue and law enforcement operations such as fire monitors, night vision camera, radio direction finder and a workboat. It also has a bullet-proof navigational bridge. The remaining MRRVs will arrive one after another every quarter or until 2018.-By Evelyn Macairan

Duterte seeks CPP explanation on Davao ambush, threatens to lift ceasefire LUCENA CITY - Following the ambush of government militiamen staged by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Wednesday, President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday threatened to lift the unilateral ceasefire he declared during his first state address. Speaking to the troops of the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) here, Duterte said he called a leftist congressman and Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, chairman of the negotiating panel of the government, to demand an explanation from the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) on the incident in Davao del Norte. “Sabi ko, ‘Ano ba ito, are we in into these truce or are we not?’ Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Give me an answer by tonight because

kapag tomorrow, wala, tatanggalin ko, balik tayo sa away’,” Duterte said. “If you do not honor or you kill a single soldier or a CAFGU, which is also a soldier of the Republic, eh sabi ko kalimutan na natin ito. Fight na lang. I am demanding an explanation from the Communist Party of the Philippines,” he said. Duterte added that those responsible on the government side will also face disciplina r y ac-

tion. “Kung nagkasala kami rito, we punish our men and women sa serbisyo. Expect the same and I demand an answer na kung sino ang nagkasala, they must also put under disciplinary action. Otherwise, wala tayong pinag-usapan. That is my deal,” he said.—KBK, GMA News

P3.8-B train supply deal with Chinese firm OK’d MANILA - The Court of Appeals (CA) has given the Department of Transportation (DOT) the green light on its P3.8-billion deal with a Chinese firm for the supply of brand new trains for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) line that has been plagued with glitches over the past year. In a 16-page decision released earlier this week, the 12th Division of the appellate court dismissed the petition of Metro Rail Transit Corp. (MRTC) and MRT Holdings II seeking to permanently stop the DOT from proceeding with its contract with Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock for the manufacture and supply of 48 light rail vehicles (LRVs). The CA affirmed the order of the Makati City regional trial court that junked the claims of the MRT builders. The CA said only the Supreme Court has the power to stop national government infrastructure projects under Republic Act No. 8975 (Alternative Dispute Resolution Act).

It stressed the purchase of 48 LRVs from Dalian is considered a national government project since it was included in the investment priorities plan approved by Congress. The CA explained that lower courts could grant injunctive relief only if the matter is of extreme urgency involving a constitutional issue. “Bare allegations or invocation that MRTC suffered grave injustice and irreparable injury considering that its constitutionally protected rights were

violated will not automatically result in the issuance of an injunctive relief,” read the ruling penned by Associate Justice Maria Elisa Sempio Diy. The CA also rejected as “highly speculative and conjectural” the argument of petitioners that they would suffer irreparable injury if the procurement deal proceeds, considering its pending arbitration case against the DOT for allegedly violating the 1997 build-lease-transfer (BLT) agreement to construct and maintain the MRT line.- By Edu Punay

According to the Provincial Law Enforcement Task Force, the poachers were able to escape before they reached the area. Tanto was positively identified by witnesses through the pictures on his social media account. The Hyundai Eon seen on the CCTV footage of the incident was traced to him through its conduction sticker. The footage, which has become viral on social media, showed Tanto shooting Garalde at point blank after they engaged in a fistfight. Using Pokemon GO to fight diabetes: Is it effective?

Could augmented reality game Pokemon GO be used to fight Type 2 diabetes? Researchers at the Leicester Diabetes Centre believe that the physical activity involved in trying to “catch them all” may lead to a decline in the number of people at risk of developing the disease. “Recent figures suggest five million people in England are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, which is largely associated with physical inactivity obesity,” Dr. Tom Yates of the University of Leceister said in a report on AlphaGalileo. “Walking is hugely underrated yet it is man’s best and the cheapest form of exercise. It’s an easy and accessible way to get active and help maintain a healthy body.” Players of the popular game

have joked about the surprising influence it has had on the amount of physical activity they engage in daily. The exercise involved has generated memes (right) about people acquiring more muscular physiques because of Pokemon GO. The Leicester Diabetes Centre recognizes that increased physical activity, which the game provides, can lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes risk. Although Pokemon GO does help avoid a sedentary lifestyle, playing it has also been linked to people becoming more vulnerable to scamming and other criminal activities, and at least two men walked off a cliff while playing the game. The lesson? It provides exercise, but exercise caution as well. Happy hunting! — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News

Man uses power spray to blast carjacking attempt at car wash SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A man in Louisiana has thwarted a carjacking attempt with the help of a car wash power spray. Michael Davis was cleaning his car at a Shreveport car wash July 20 when he says a man pointed a gun at him and demanded his keys and cash. A video from Davis’ dash cam shows him turning the powerful spray on the gunman and then

trying to hit him with the wand. He also fended off another man who came around the other side of the vehicle. Davis doesn’t regret his actions. He says he probably would have been shot even if he had turned over the car and adds that his disabled veteran brother was inside. He hopes the duo will be caught. Shreveport police haven’t commented.

Apple hits milestone: 1 billion iPhones sold odd news

British ‘donkey whisperer’ translates ‘ee-aws’ using technology (Reuters) - A self-proclaimed “donkey whisperer” is encouraging people in London to use technology to help them understand donkeys’ emotions and mannerisms. Mark Ineson, owner of “Real Donkeys” in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, has been studying the animals for more than 20 years and says they are very emotive creatures. Entertainment group Merlin Events has teamed up with “Real Donkeys” to offer donkey rides “with a difference” in London’s Jubilee Gardens. New technology allows children to hear the animals’ sounds translated into English, and into full sentences. “We get the nudges, we get the facial expressions,” he said, adding that like dogs, donkeys “give a paw, he lifts a leg to show his emotions that way,” said Ineson about his 12-year-old donkey named Carl, one of 17 donkeys he owns. Chloe Couchman, a spokeswoman at Merlin Events, explained that the technology behind the translators analyses the unique sounds, frequencies and vibrations of each donkey’s “ee-aww,” triggering a phrase that reflects what the donkey is feeling.-Jane Witherspoon

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple announced Wednesday the sale of its billionth iPhone, a milestone for the company as it seeks to keep momentum in a competitive smartphone market. Chief executive Tim Cook made the announcement at a staff meeting at the company’s California headquarters. “IPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history,” he said in a statement. “It’s become more than a constant companion. IPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day. Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference.” The news comes a day after

Apple reported a drop in iPhone sales over the past quarter, a second straight drop after uninterrupted growth since its introduction in 2007. Apple sold 40.4 million iPhones in the quarter ending June 25, down 15 percent from a year earlier, highlighting concerns over growth for the iconic smartphone. The quarterly results underscored the challenges for Apple, which has built a huge business around the iPhone but is unlikely to see continued growth, due to a saturated smartphone market and increased competition. Apple has been seeking to diversify its product line and move into services for a more stable revenue base, while keeping users in its ecosystem with offerings such as music, connected cars and its Apple Watch.AFP

10 things that I love about the AlDub flick Like Susan Roces, that must be how the millions who have seen the AlDub movie Imagine You & Me nationwide felt — falling in love all over again. Susan was among those invited by Tony “Mr. T” Tuviera, the movie’s producer, to an exclusive block screening last Saturday at the Directors Club of SM Megamall. Mr. T was mum on how many millions the movie has raked in so far (excluding the projected gross during the international screenings). But judging from his wide, wide smile during an early dinner he and his wife Mads hosted at the Din Tai Fung restaurant (which serves excellent Taiwanese cuisine, at the mall’s ground floor), Mr. T didn’t have to say how much. Anyway, besides what Susan said about making her fall in love again, here are the 10 things that I love about Imagine You & Me: It beautifully describes what a real feel-good movie is. Aside from the smooth direction by Mike Tuviera, the cleverly-written screenplay by Renato Custodio and Aloy Adlawan (who,

like me, is a Waray, from Laoang, Northern Samar), that reminded me of Love Story (what can you say about a young girl who dies?), An Affair To Remember (a girl not showing up on a crucial date with no rhyme nor reason), Gone Girl (clues in the form of pieces of a broken heart made of glass) and The Fault In Our Stars (a girl fascinated with a Shakespearean story). Maine Mendoza is a-OK even but she needs more “depth” and credibility in dramatic scenes. Alden is consistent from beginning to end, such a cuddlesome boy with eyes that mirror a world of emotions, especially when they are welling up in a dramatic moment. Jasmine CurtisSmith is a revelation as an actress; she melts your heart with her losing battle with leukemia. The cinematography by Shayne Sarte is mesmerizing, making you feel like flying to Como, Italy…but, sob and sigh, you simply can’t afford so you just soak yourself up in those, yes, delicious sceneries where Alden and Maine’s characters meet and match. The soundtrack is touching, the musical background not intrusive at all, and the song Imagine You & Me (lyrics by Maine, music by Vic Sotto and arrangement by Jimmy Antiporda) aptly describes the split-screen-to-big-screen AlDub romance which the AlDub Nation hopes will leap from reel to real. I agree with what Teddy Boy Locsin wrote that Imagine You & Me is sui generis (according to Webster: constituting a class alone, unique, peculiar) and, “a tough act to follow.” -FUNFARE By Ricky Lo

“I would like to fall in love again!”

Gerald Anderson on past romance with Bea Alonzo:

‘Wag naman silang malungkot para sa amin’

Gerald Anderson admitted that he would miss his ex-girlfriend Bea Alonzo after all the bonding that they did while making and promoting their film How To Be Yours. “Alam mo sobrang bilis ng mga pangyayari eh. Kagabi parang nasa Cebu lang kami tapos ngayon premiere night. I really find it so fast so ine-enjoy lang namin ang moment,” he said during an interview at the cast party after the movie’s premiere night last July 26. Over the weekend, a feature story about the two discussing their short-lived romance in detail came out. Since it was the first time that they openly talked about the demise of their romance, many felt that the two deserved a second chance. “Oo nga ano, when you put it all together ito pala ang naging love story namin,” Bea began. She continued, “Hindi ko alam kung paano ako magre-react kasi the fact that we’re talking about it now… before we don’t even talk about it. So, I’m happy na it’s out there.” Bea hopes that unveiling their story to a larger audience could be beneficial for some people. “Siguro merong mga tao na pareho sa pinagdaanan namin nung time na ‘yun na baka na-inspire ganon,” she said. Some netizens felt bad over what they had to endure just to keep their relationship from the public. To this Gerald said, “‘Wag naman silang malungkot para samin. ‘Wag naman.” Like Bea, the hunky actor pointed out that their romance and everything that they went through changed them for the better. “I mean, sa mga nakabasa. Nakita niyo naman kung ano ang pinagdaanan namin. I learned a lot and I’m thankful din. Siyempre I wish it would have lasted longer. Di ba? But ang importante you learned a lesson,” he reiterated. Now that they are able to work with each other, Gerald did not really dismiss the fact that their communication lines have also opened. “Communication, ‘yun naman ang ano eh. Siyempre magiging busy rin siya, ako rin. Just communication,” he said. Catch Bea and Gerald’s movie titled How To Be Yours by Dan Villegas in cinemas nationwide starting July 27.-Maureen Marie Belmonte

The number of files that I have had where a person gets married abroad only to find that his/her spouse often waits way beyond a reasonable period of time to process, is very upsetting. I can only imagine how difficult it is for the newly married couple. In some cases, it has reached a point where I encourage pregnant wives who are abroad to apply for a visiting visa while their file is under process. On the surface it sounds like a good idea but I know that the chance of getting a visiting visa for a spouse that is under process is less than 5% at best. I recommend to some to apply so that it will afford me the opportunity to highlight the severity of the problem of processing time. These pregnant moms, in my opinion, should be allowed to come to Canada

It is apparent that the political will to make drastic and immediate changes exists. I will report on the impact of these changes in future articles.

Even an immensely popular president is vulnerable to the abuse of power and needs a credible opposition to discourage this. Beyond promoting the proper use of power, the opposition can also help ensure that the annual national appropriation is utilized for the intended purposes, with projects and programs implemented properly. In short, the political opposition has an indispensable role to play in promoting good governance and making democracy work. Under the current setup, the opposition in the House of Representatives is also expected to initiate proceedings to remove from office a president, vice president, justice of the Supreme Court or head of a constitutional body who betrays the public trust. Impeachment is a numbers game, and with fewer than 50 members who can’t even unite, the current House opposition is unlikely to muster the votes to forward a complaint to the Senate for trial. But when public trust has been genuinely betrayed and impeachment is not used merely as a partisan weapon of harassment, the numbers can shift as the system of checks and balances kicks into place. In both chambers of Congress, the opposition currently constitutes a super tiny minority. Its role in a democratic government, however, is anything but minor. The opposition must be up to the task, performing its role with efficiency and integrity.-Philstar

A president close to the people

I

t has only been a month since the people elected President Rodrigo Roa Duterte as the leader of the country, but in that short span of time alone, he has already shown his capability to be a trustworthy, honest, and capable president that the people can relate to and more importantly understand and support. A recent SWS survey of the president and vice president only goes to reinforce the fact that the people love him and trust him. His rating of 91 percent is the highest ever and this may only continue to rise in the months and years ahead. Although there was a large portion of the voters who may not have cast their votes for him last May it is clear that everyone is now supporting him as best as they can and want only for him to succeed. After all, the success of President Duterte is the success of the Philippines. We all want a country that we can be proud of and one that makes all of us feel safe. Granted there are issues that have to be tackled and addressed. A common concern is that the war against drugs is getting out of hand fast. There have been a lot of vigilante killings that are getting by with little to no proof at all that they are drug-related deaths. This is definitely something the president is going to have to look into before his war against crime starts producing even

R

IGHT TO LIFE being inherent in the human person, the many believers in the sanctity of life are not likely to withdraw their call that suspected users of illegal drugs be given a chance to be heard before being silenced on the spot by a bullet. There are many circumstances that an arresting police officer must sort out in his mind a split-second before pulling the trigger on a suspected drug-user/pusher who is still presumed innocent under the law. Unfortunately for the officer and his quarry, that decision to kill had been made for him in advance by his superiors acting as God handing down a summary last judgment. Why so, and – if we are not comfortable with the moral issue – what can be done about it? President Rodrigo Duterte said in his State of the Nation Address last Monday: “My administration shall be sensitive to the State’s obligation to promote and protect, fulfill the human rights of our citizens, especially the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable.” We presume our President’s bona fides. Despite his tough exterior, most of us think Digong is mellow at heart, and means well. The problem then could be that the Commander-in-Chief, who has inspired the extrajudicial

In the end, I believe President Duterte wants peace and he wants to create a country that everyone can equally share. Now is the time for all of us to support and do our part to create this better Philippines. more crime than ever before. However, I think that if he can get this under control his intentions are definitely good. We all want to be able to feel safer in the country and a hard stance against drugs and rape is necessary to help minimize the crime that has been running rampant for years and to help get criminals off the streets for good. On Monday, President Duterte gave his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) and it was very heartfelt and straight to the point. He kept things simple like he has always promised he would and despite the long running time of the speech, the language was uncluttered and free of unnecessary superfluous extras. He talked to the politicians, businessmen, and the people all on the same level and in a way that everyone could understand. I think this is particularly what endears him to the masses – he never talks above them, he talks to them. This helps them to understand him better and makes them feel like they are part of the conversation, which they most definitely are. I think President Duterte

wants to keep everything simpler. Just last week, he did away with ceremonial titles such as “Your Excellency” and “Your Honor” and has opted instead of be called President Duterte – very simple, very real. It’s an excellent maneuver, which once again brings him closer to the people. Even members of the Cabinet shall be addressed simply as “Secretary.” This is not the first time the president has turned away from tradition. He made it clear when he was running that he was not into all of the pomp and circumstance involved in the job and the office. He chose to have his oath-taking in Malacañang instead of Rizal Park to avoid causing heavy traffic in Manila and he chooses not to take special flights in lieu of keeping to his economy seat on domestic airlines when he goes home to Davao. In fact, even for the SONA, the president wanted to make sure things were kept simple. He ordered guests to wear business attire and nixed long gowns and ostentatious ensembles for the solemn event. This is something I know so

Tony Katigbak

INTROSPECTIVE many people supported. While it has been fun and exciting in the past to watch lawmakers and VIPs “walk the SONA red carpet” in their designer best, it also seemed wildly inappropriate to many to have our leaders in such a big display of formal fashion for what should be a simple and solemn occasion. After all, it is an important day for the country and for the people and should not be treated like a congressional fashion show. It’s easy to understand why the masses might feel bad when they see their leaders stroll down the carpet in a gown or suit worth hundreds of thousands of pesos (which they will probably only wear once) while they haven’t been able to eat for several days. All in all, I believe that keeping things simple is going to be a trademark for our new president. Even his speech was straight to the point. He is

uncomfortable giving prepared speeches but his natural charm and charisma make it easy for him to connect to everyone in a room. In his first SONA, President Duterte has made it clear that he is a Filipino who loves his country with all his heart and wants to make things better. He wants to be a leader who moves forward and puts the blame game and finger-pointing aside. You can say that is an ordinary Filipino citizen who dreams of a better country not just for some, but for all Filipinos. And he wants to help the Juan and Juana on the streets who have to push and fight and shove for a spot on the MRT to go to work. He wants to help OFWs. He wants to hopefully help simplify processes so that things like getting a driver’s license or a passport can be easy – as they should be. He hates drugs, crime, human trafficking, and unnecessary red tape. He strives for industrialization to be done outside of Manila giving our provinces a muchneeded economic boost. And he wants to help our agriculture sector and especially our farmers thrive once again. In the end, I believe President Duterte wants peace and he wants to create a country that everyone can equally share. Now is the time for all of us to support and do our part to create this better Philippines.

6-month deadline ups pressure to kill Federico D. Pascual Jr.

killing of suspects now averaging 10 lives each day, is rushing to catch a self-imposed deadline based on his limited Davao experience. And that pressure is passed on to the national police. Invoking human rights should not be regarded as a pretext to frustrate the administration’s anti-narcotics drive, or to “destroy the country” as Mr. Duterte puts it, but as a plea for putting things in proper order and in line with due process. Having reiterated his promise many times, President Duterte may feel compelled to deliver on his pledge to put an end to crime, drug-abuse and corruption in “three to six months.” With the targeted evils lurking everywhere nationwide, and with the police and the prosecution arm of government sorely handicapped, they might have found the six months allotted for the job too short. Under deadline pressure, many police raiders may be taking the short-cut by just shooting dead the main or collateral targets. After all, the President has promised them protection,

Let us then consider giving the police, and the President, reasonably more time – like maybe 10 months instead of six – to neutralize criminals without violating due process, but making sure that the extra time does not upset the momentum of the chase. The extension will also give the police, social welfare agencies and other cooperating entities more time to put up rehabilitation facilities for the throngs of drug users who have been surrendering or are being caught. We understand that the desired end is not to kill drug-users but to rehabilitate them, as the President implied in his SONA: “We will increase the number of residential treatment and rehabilitation facilities in all regions. The armed forces will facilitate the preparation for the use of military camps and facilities for drug rehabilitation.” • Watch the items on FOI blacklist ON FREEDOM of Information, the general rule under the Executive Order of President Duterte is that a citizen shall

have reasonable access to official records of the Executive Department unless such files are listed as exceptions in the inventory still being drawn up.

• Records of minutes, advice given or opinions expressed during decision-making or policy formulation, invoked by the Chief Executive to be privileged.

While awaiting the list being made by the Department of Justice and the Office of the Solicitor General, everything is on hold. It is not yet the season for submitting requests for specified records with Executive agencies.

• Information pertaining to defense, law enforcement and border control, when disclosure may compromise or interfere with any military or law enforcement operation, or lead to the revelation of the identity of a confidential source, or endanger the life or safety of an individual, or deprive a person of his right to a fair trial.

In his SONA, the President said: “The Presidential Communications Office shall coordinate with the Office of the Executive Secretary and the Presidential Legal Counsel in implementing the EO on the Freedom of Information.” The PCO, OES and the PLC will draw up the implementing rules and regulations? The EO says that requests for records will be submitted to and acted upon by the head of the office keeping the files, making the office head the gatekeeper. If the citizen is denied access and he disagrees, under the EO he can go to court. In the FOI bill that the previous Congress did not pass because of its common fear with Malacañang of being scrutinized, these were some of the exceptions:

• Personal circumstances of an individual whose disclosure would be an unwarranted invasion of his or her privacy, unless it forms part of a public record, or the person is or was a government official. • Trade secrets and commercial or financial information from a natural or juridical person obtained in confidence or covered by privileged communication, when its revelation would prejudice his/its interests in trade, industrial, financial or commercial competition. • Records classified as privileged communication in legal proceedings by law or by the Rules of Court.

Rayver Cruz shares why he didn’t pursue Maja Salvador

Kapamilya star Jessy Mendiola is proclaimed the “sexiest” woman in the country at the FHM Philippines Vitory party held at a posh club in Taguig. -Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News

All hail Jessy Mendiola, the new queen of sexy

Mendiola defeated the likes of Jennylyn Mercado, Nadine Lustre, Rhian Ramos and Solenn Heussaff for the right to be proclaimed as the “sexiest” Filipina. Her reward: a chance to silence her critics, especially those body-shaming haters she came across months ago. Shedding her shy persona, she danced, she waved, and she blew kisses. As awkward as it may seem --Mendiola appeared to have forgotten a few moves of the choreography and generally looked uncomfortable by her own admission-- her place on the stage, she said, proves that anyone can be considered sexy. Mendiola, a fitting queen for a magazine aiming to reinvent the definition of sexy for Filipinos, is right to a certain extent. However, everyone knew that only one can occupy the title she currently holds; a title that meant she has as much loving fans as she has detractors; a title that also gives her a needed confidence boost that allows her to feel more at home alongside the likes of Marian Rivera and Angel Locsin. “Kung si Pia Wurtzbach eh confidently beautiful with a heart, tayo ay confidently sexy with a heart,” she asserted, referring to the iconic answer of the country’s first Miss Universe in four decades. Vincent Garcia, ABS-CBN News

On Tonight with Boy Abunda, Rayver Cruz talked about his getting Gary Valenciano’s approval to remake his hit song “Hataw Na” for his album What You Want. The album is collaboration between him and his friends Sam Milby, Dom Hernandez, and Gerald Anderson. “Nag gather lang kami isang dinner and mahilig kasi yun pinagsasample nila ako,” he shared. “Lagi nila ako pinapakanta. Napag-usapan na, ‘bro seryosohin natin ‘to kasi kumakanta ka talaga.’ Tapos ako naman, ‘seryoso ba ‘yan? Sige gawin na natin.’ “Growing up, Tito Boy, ang idol ko talaga si Sir Gary,” he confessed. This prompted him to approach the singer one day during an ASAP production and say, “Sir Gary! Gagawa po kasi akong album at gusto ko po iremake yung ‘Hataw Na.’” And of this he further shared, “tapos sobrang bait ni Sir Gary pumayag siya kaagad. Sabi niya, ‘you know what Rayve? Y o u

should do it Rayve. You should do it Rayve!’” During the segment Fast Talk, Rayver admitted to having had two girlfriends in the past. He was also asked, “sexiest girl you’ve danced with?” He answered, “Maja Salvador.” Maja was a former girlfriend of his friend, Gerald. Boy followed, “oo o hindi, nagkagusto ka na ba sa ex-girlfriend ng kaibigan mo?” He replied, “pinipigilan ko kaagad yung sarili ko. Kasi mahal ko yung mga kaibigan ko.” Lastly he was asked, “when you dance with Maja Salvador, pinigilan mo ba yung sarili mo dahil mahal mo si Gerald?” “Dahil mahal ko sila parehas,” Rayver disclosed.-Cristina Malonzo

‘Sana kahit kalahati niya maabot ko’

Enjoying the high ratings of his action series Ang Probinsyano, Coco Martin admitted he is lucky to be working with Cesar Montano whom he considers one of the most talented action stars in the industry. “Napakagaling po hindi lang sa action kundi pati sa drama. Kasi napakarelaxed niyang artista eh. Sabi ko nga seasoned actor yan kumbaga napakarami kong matututunan at saka sobrang bait niya. Kaya nung nakita ko na siya hindi ko talaga napagilian yinakap ko siya un-

ang kita pa lang namin (laughs). Ang galing niya. Hindi ko maipapaliwanag sana balang araw, sana kahit kalahati niya maabot ko,” he said. Coco said he has always been a big fan of the senior actor. “Siyempre si kuya Buboy yan si Cesar Montano yan. Hindi ko puwedeng biguin yung mga manunuod, yung mga tagahanga niya. Kumbaga gagawin namin yung pinaka-best, yung pinakamagandang fight scene. Kasi honestly ini-expect ng tao yun,” he said. Apart from working together on the show, Coco said both of them are interested in working on a movie together someday. “Kasi kami ni kuya Buboy usually pag nag-a-advise siya sa akin and then sabi ko, ‘Kuya Buy sana balang araw hindi lang ito yung mapagsamahan natin. Sana makagawa rin tayo ng pelikula. Alam mo kuya Buy sobrang gusto ko yung dati mong pelikula with Victor Neri na Utol.’ So sabi niya, ‘Eh di gawin natin! Or i-remake natin.’ Sana nga po,” he added. -Rhea Manila Santos

Frank Sinatra once sang: “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage.” The line is timelessly true, but squeezing in a love affair with your project car into that symbiosis may just turn your marriage into a carnage of sorts--killing your savings, your children’s college funds, the annual getaway, and the love your better half has for you. What car-crazed husband would want that, right? Of course, you can always walk that fine line between keeping the wifey happy while satisfying your automotive masterplan. After all, life is always about balance, but it can be as tricky as riding a gnarly wave to shore or tipping over and wiping out in the process. So I asked a bunch of tied-down blokes about how they’d succeeded in this dilemma. RAFA: “My Toyota Vios was modified a bit. I focused more on engine performance upgrades as that mattered most. My wife didn’t appreciate it as much as I did in the beginning, but it eventually grew on her as she enjoyed the ride. When I’d go with some cosmetic but functional addons, she would eventually express appreciation. She stipulated that everything I did with the car should be within my financial capabilities. Of course, bribing her with something she liked would almost certainly win her over!” MARC: “When the wife and I got married, her first order of business was

to raise my car back to stock height as she hated the stiff ride. For the sake of peace and order, I agreed and thought my days of car mods were over. Fast-forward eight years later and I got the perfect car for myself and budget (2014 Mazda 3). I liked the way it looked, but there was a problem. I wanted a sedan but my wife wanted a hatchback. We finally met in the middle and got a sedan with her choice of color. Now I wanted to make the car mine mods-wise, but there was another obstacle. You guessed it: the wife! Luckily, with a few ninja moves and influences from fellow Mazda 3 owners, I was able to transform ‘Misaki’. I lowered it and added skirts and huge 19-inch alloy wheels. My wife surprisingly did not complain! Her reason for that? She would get surprised looks whenever she’d step out of a badasslooking car. Plus, she claims looking cute in it. Recently, she ordered my short ram intake. Soon, with the help of my Mazda 3 brothers, I’m going for a performance tune, which I’m keeping from her again. After all, it’s not a visible modification. I guess in the end, like in any relationship, it’s all about give-and-take and meeting each other halfway. As long as I continue paying for the education of my kids, she’s fine with it. From an autophiliac’s perspective, the way you treat your car has to be the same or a bit less compared to the way you spoil your wife so as to avoid jealousy or heated arguments. Your wife is the love of your life, while your car is your mistress. You’ll have to spoil both so they can give you love every day.” TOHNNY: “When I tied the knot 11 years ago, I knew that I had to throw my car-nut persona out the window. The expenses involved in raising a family, buying a home, maintaining monthly operating expenses, and saving up for the kids’ education just made it impossible to even think of modifying anything on my car. However, my epiphany began when my wife bought a basic yet sporty hatchback. She had always been the practical one in our conjugal partnership, that is why she opted for the lower-priced variant. After a few weeks, however, she began to have buyer’s remorse and told me she wanted to just use our old Kia Sportage as her daily com-

muter--mainly because of the higher ground clearance. So I found myself stuck with a really nice car seriously in need of a makeover, and that’s when my journey in modification began. Knowing my wife was going to balk at spending for aesthetics, I had to squirrel some funds but also thought about mods that she would barely notice. On the surface, that would have been a very tall order. But I consider myself extremely lucky to have met a band of brothers whose philosophy was to get the biggest-bang-for-the-buck mods that are not only reasonably priced and reversible, but more importantly, immensely pleasing to the eyes. So now my base-model hatchback looks sportier than ever with bigger rims, wider tires and a pleasingly lowered stance with nary an objection from the wife.” KARLO: “I never looked at it that way. I stay away from head-on collisions. Never schedule anything in conflict with her or the kids’ plans, for instance. I work on my cars when they’re doing their own things--usually evenings and Sunday mornings. The bottomline is trust. So far, the wifey has seen the pluses of my little experiments. She admires subtlety and all beneficial mods while keeping them roadworthy. I always took care of minor car or home complaints, and somehow that earned me some space and respect given no one else here can assume those responsibilities. All these added up to putting a smile on her face. Just keep in mind that mod journeys have to be reasonable. People tend to get carried away and overshoot their budget, spending more than the cost of the car itself. A ceiling must be placed on budget and expectations.” Based on these real-life stories, it’s evident that instead of intensely pursuing that “dream build” of a car, it’s best to stay sensible and find that sweet spot of nurturing both your car and marriage, unless you’re Jay Leno. I’m a late bloomer in my passion for cars as it started after the arrival of our first baby. Between daddy duties and working on my music, I found myself spending a lot of time with my Hyundai in the garage. Five years later, my enthusiasm and passion have led me to being part of the country’s biggest automotive events and writing about car-related topics including helping those with their vehicle troubles. To top it off, the missus is now very supportive in contrast to how she was some time ago when I started doing modifications on my car, which I did in the subtlest of ways (then again, nothing can really hide those performance wheels). At the end of the day, it’s always about knowing your priorities and goals with the utmost clarity: family first before anything else. When it comes to modifications, remember that looks and/or performance should be synonymous with reliability and safety, things your spouse can appreciate. After all, a happy wife means a happy motoring life. Kudos to all the husbands out there who have found that balance.-Story and photo by Manskee Nascimento

Dante Buenaventura: Up Close and Personal

ow! The months of May and June were kind of dry months for me as an amateur writer. I wasn’t able to write except for some poems about the hometown of my mother and a tribute to a human rights activist comrade who passed away. This morning, 4th of July, I woke up early and went to Polo Park to take a walk for one hour as my exercise and went straight to La Merage Restaurant at 90 Isabel St. to hang out with seniors, and lo and behold, I saw two friends who I respect dearly as activists back in the early 70’s. For the purpose of this article, I just want to refer to them as Ate (older sister) Clara and Kuya (older brother) Ariel. They requested me not to mention their real names for they were victims of the worst torture during the time of the dictatorship. They can still sense those traumatic years. I left the table of the Breakfast Club folks and went to chat with the historical ones for a great conversation on different subjects and for whatever reason, our conversation shifted to Dante Buenaventura. The shift was sudden that even the two friends whom I was talking to were surprised and ask me who started it. Honestly, I myself can’t recall. They told me that Dante was the person who married them back in the old days in the movement during the Marcos Dictatorship. I asked about Dante’s role in the cultural field during the first quarter storm and Ate Clara replied that Dante was the founder of Samahang Kamanyang ng Masang Pilipino or SK for short. Kamanyang is the Tagalog for incense. I asked her, “Really Ate?” with wonder in my tone. “Yes, Indeed! He is original,” she uttered. Ate also confirmed to me that Dante was a member of the KM or Kabataang Makabayan (Patriotic Youth), the radical youth movement back in the first quarter storm. I told the couple that I wrote articles about Dante, which was published in some community papers like Korea Times, Diversity times, Ang Peryodiko and occasionally in Filipino Journal. I explained the importance of writing down his achievements to serve as a light for the community in its struggles. What Dante started in the community bore much fruit, for instance, his dedication to the cause contributed a lot in the anti-dictatorship struggle in the diaspora and also in the struggle against racism. His influence can still be seen up to this day. In fact, Magdaragat just finished celebrating its fortieth anniversary of serving the community by educating the youth on Philippine culture and compassion for the motherland. Ate told me that she recalls those days back in 1969 to 1972 when Dante was his Professor in advertisement and at the same time, the founder-director of Kamanyang of which she was a member. She shared a story when they arrived here in 1993, they went to watch a Folklorama Magdaragat event and had goose bumps watching the presentation. She kept won-

dering why the dynamics of the play was so familiar, the use of the lights, the fluidity, the use of silhouette, the acting, musical scoring, and even the movement on stage were strangely familiar, only to realize later that Dante was the founder of the group, the same reason why it was so similar to Kamanyang. Ate Clara and Kuya Ariel were shocked because they thought that Dante was in the United States at that time. It was only later on that they learned that Dante already passed away. They address Dante as Kuya (Older Brother) Dante with respect. I asked her about the background of Dante and Ate shared some interesting information. Dante attended PETA (Philippines Educational Theatre Association), which is known up to this day for creating issue-based performances that mirror and reflect the times). He did workshop on theatre and became classmates with Lino Brocka (a Filipino film director), who was widely regarded as one of the most influential and significant Filipino filmmaker in the Philippine Cinema history (Source: Lino Brocka: The Philippines’ Greatest Director) and Ricky Lee, a writer of Paksa or Panulat Para sa Kaunlaran ng Sambayanan (Pen for People’s Progress), and a Filipino Multiawarded author stage and screen playwright and journalist. These two are considered legends of Philippine theatre and Cinema. Ate recalls that she performed in one of the big productions back in the days like the Pulang Tala (Red Star) that was shown at the Abelardo Hall in UP. In this play, she remembers reciting the poem Bilanggong Pulitikal (Political Prisoner) and Teodoro Agoncillo’s Republikang Basahan (Tattered Republic). I can sense her excitement while telling this anecdote. She added that Anak Pawis was among those plays staged by Dante during that time. Another play that was staged by Kamanyang and written by Dante is Asendero (Landowner) that tells about feudal exploitation and the struggle of the peasantry to end an oppressive system. “Those were the days Levy,” Ate Clara uttered with fondness in her voice. I also learned from her that the President of PUP (Polytechnic University of the Philippines ), formerly PCC or Philippine College of Commerce during their time was Dr. Nemesio Prudente who became the founder of Guerilla Anakpawis ng Kalunsuran or GAK, one of the groups opposed to the dictatorship. “During those days, Ate said, Dante would organize workshops and series of education on Political Philosophy and Ideology.” Professor Fernando Samonte was at one time invited to conduct a workshop on poetry. I asked her about Dante’s style of leadership. Ate Clara informed me that he was a workaholic and never stops until he almost drops dead. She remembers that every time Dante leads a march,

levy abad

Migrant Perspective Dante would always be the flag bearer, always making sure that everybody is safe. After the big rallies and presentation, they would retreat to the Blue Room at the PUP to do an assessment and enjoy the company with laughter, food, drinks, among other things. Another place that they frequent was Dante’s house where they will have meeting, assessment, discussion interspersed with laughter, food, fun, ideology and politics. Ate surely misses those years and remembers Dante fondly telling them to always love the people and fight for truth and justice. Dante did not fail to remind them on the need to immerse oneself with the masses in order to take root and so in the process, get rid of the petty bourgeois mentality. In the midst of these exchanges, Ate suddenly told

me, ”Before I forget this, Dante Buenaventura’s girlfriend during that time was really pretty and smart and at the same time the President of the Supreme Student Council”. I asked Ate whether the lady was a Spanish Mestiza of Chinita or a Chinese mestiza and she replied that she was just so beautiful. At this point, Ate’s husband or Kuya (older brother) reminded me that there were a lot of gossips in the community, but they don’t really matter anymore, and what is important as a comrade and friend, we have to celebrate Dante Buenaventura’s life’s achievements. As an organizer, Ate said that Dante was amazing and that he was well loved by the whole community. Being a revolutionary, he treats everyone equally because he hates feudal tendencies. He was not into building fiefdom. Ate continued that upon the declaration of martial law, all the members of Kamanyang were called by Dante for an emergency meeting at their home and it was packed. There, Dante in a classic organizer style, assigned tasks and arranged for the members to be housed in pairs in different homes in the community to be hidden from the fascist authorities. Even before he left for abroad, different task were given on the proper disposition of members of Kamanyang to

different organizations that were resisting the fascist dictatorship of Marcos. We were so engaged in our conversation that we did not notice the time, but before we parted, Ate mentioned a song that Dante wrote and which Hermie Evangelista arranged. Itigil mo ang luha sa mata yaong tumitigis sa kamay at paa” (I can still remember the moments that you were with me, times that you embraced the nakedness of my feet while in your chest you allow my life to blossom. The same life that became the cause of my death when you were taken away from me. Dry up the tears from your eyes that are flowing to your arms and feet). Ate Clara and Kuya Ariel who were pioneers of the Labour Movement back in the 70’s told me that the poem is all about peasant oppression and the necessity of drying the tears and the beginning of struggle to change the world. The song was popular decades ago but its relevance does not and should not fade with time.

2 Kababayans shine at Made in Manitoba with WSO

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) under the baton of a German-born conductor, Maestro Alexander Mickelthwate, hosted Made in Manitoba at Centennial Concert Hall last Sunday, June 26, 2016. This event features Winnipeg’s Brightest Musical Talents and was proudly sponsored by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries. For a $10 a ticket matinee show, it was the best value for a musical event with this calibre that I have been to. This year’s lineup are Emily Rekrut-Pressey, a violinist winner of 2015 Aiken’s Trophy (Winnipeg Music Festival), Lynlee Wolstencroft, a soprano and Rose Bowl Winner from Winnipeg Music Festival, Jammie Lee, a pianist winner from Brandon Festival of the Arts, Marcel Desautels, a tenor and Philanthropist of the WSO, Mathew Robinson, a saxophonist 2016 Adam N. Leckie Memorial Trophy Winner, Tyrsa Friesen , a 9-year old 2016 Winnipeg Music Festival Winner, Robert Ouellette, trumpet play and MLA for Winnipeg Center riding, and our two kababayans, Elsaida Alerta, a vocalist and

winner of 2015 World Karaoke Champion and Paul Ong, a winning vocalist and finalist from 2012 Canada’s Got Talent. The program started with an Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla, a heart pounding music taken from the Opera of the same title written by Russian composer Mikhael Glinka and followed by violinist Emily Pressey who beautifully played Concerto in D major by Carl Stamitz. Jamie Lee, a prodigy captured the hearts of the audience as he played a rather difficult piano piece, Rhapsody on a “Theme of Paganini” composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The audience just love how he effortlessly played such a complex musical composition with passion and artistic techniques. No wonder that the viewing public gave him a repeated applause for an excellent performance. It was an interesting sight to have a music philanthropist sing on the stage when Mr. Marcel Desautels sang with his rich tenor voice two arias namely, ”Flower Song” from Carmen and the most beloved “O Sole Mio”. After his outstanding performance, he thanked the audience and gave an inspiring

message about Philanthropy. Some noteworthy performances came from a 9-year old violinist, Tyrsa Friesen, winner of Catherine and Bruce Jones Scholarship from Winnipeg Music Festival in which she performed a sonata from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and a cameo performance from the current Member of Parliament in the Winnipeg Center, MP Robert Falcon-Ouellette who surprised the audience with his technical skills in trumpet playing Bugler’s Holiday by Leroy Anderson. Two of our Kababayans shone in that show and were wonderfully received by the audience. Elsaida Alerta who was born in the Philippines and came to Canada at an early age, belted Dolly Parton’s song and popularly recorded by the late Whitney Houston “I Will Always Love You”. Elsaida’s sultry interpretation of this popular song elicited thunderous claps and

whistles from the audience. She was crowned as the 2015 Female Karaoke World Champion that was held in Singapore and attended by contestants from 30-plus countries. Paul Ong, a popular mainstay vocalist in the

community interpreted K’naan’s “Wavin’ Flag”, a popular song reminiscent of Canadian artist’s charity single for Haiti’s 2010 devastating earthquake. Mr. Ong’s performance truly captivated the audience with his rich baritone voice. He was the finalist of 2012 Canada’s Got Talent and multi gold medal winners at the 2015 World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held in Long Beach, California, USA. The show ended with Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s mesmerizing and nostalgic performance of John William’s movie theme song from E.T. “Adventures on Earth: E.T.the Extra-Terrestrial”. Truly, Made in Manitoba presented Winnipeg’s top notched and promising artists. (Dante Aviso)

Will my insurance cover compression socks?

While all insurance plans and companies vary, many third party insurance plans cover compression therapy through extended benefits. Compression benefits usually cover a percentage of the cost (e.g.. 80%) for up to a certain number of pairs per year (e.g. 6) or dollar amount (e.g. $400). Most insurance plans that cover the cost of compression socks require that a physician prescribe them and that the compression be greater than 20 mmHg. In general, it is best to contact your insurance carrier directly to determine if stockings are a covered expense.

What are the wear and care instructions? any compression higher than 20 mmHg.

M

ost people have experienced tired, heavy legs at some point in their lives. Whether from sitting at a desk or standing all day at work, during pregnancy or as a result of a number of medical conditions that can affect circulation. Today we are going to discuss some common questions about medical compression socks and who can benefit from them!

How do veins work?

Veins return blood to our heart after it has been pumped out to the body through arteries. Veins have thin walls, contain valves and typically handle a lot lower pressure as compared to thick and muscular arteries. This makes them a bit more fragile and predisposes them to issues if they become weak or damaged.

What is compression therapy?

Compression therapy uses the concept of gradient or gradual compression. The level of compression is

measured and expressed in mmHg (millimetres of mercury). In the form of compression socks, the amount of compression or “squeezing” is highest at the ankle and decreases as the sock moves up the leg.

How does it work?

The gradient or change from higher to lower compression helps encourage the movement of blood and other fluid from the lower legs, back towards the heart, to then be circulated in the body. This design helps counter the effects of gravity, and help weak or faulty veins function more efficiently.

Who can benefit from compression therapy?

Most people will experience benefits from wearing compression socks regularly as long as their doctor has cleared them to do so. However, there are certain conditions and common symptoms, for which compression therapy can really help…

- Sore/tired/ heavy legs - Women who are pregnant - Those who travel often - Bulging/Varicose/Spider Veins - Swelling in the legs - Venous insufficiency - Hardening of the skin/ulcers - Sport performance/recovery Are there different types of compression socks? First off, compression socks come in different levels of compression. Your doctor will prescribe what level of compression best suits your needs. Socks are classified based on the range of compression they deliver. For example: - 8-15 mmHg (usually for diabetic persons) - 15-20 mmHg (travel/general well-being) - 20-30 mmHg, 30-40 mmHg or above (medical grade compression). In terms of length, socks are available in knee-high, thigh high, or panty hose options for both men and women. The length of the sock may depend on personal preference, or where the issues are developing in the leg. There are also open or closed toe varieties for those who prefer sandals. As for colour and patterns, the style options in compression therapy have grown significantly in recent years. Socks come in a variety of colours, patterns and materials to suit anyone’s needs. From basic black business socks, nude stockings, sport sleeves, or even hot pink stripes…some are so fashionable, it is hard to believe they are therapeutic.

How do I get them?

First it is recommended to speak to a doctor. They can assess your signs and symptoms, make sure you are safe to wear compression and prescribe the correct level of compression for you. Once you have your prescription, visit a medical or athletic supply store, where a certified compression fitter will measure your legs (to determine the correct size) and help you select a style that suits your

It is best to put on the socks first thing in the morning when the legs are smallest. They are worn during the waking hours (not to sleep), and should be washed after every use (hand or machine wash and lay flat to dry). The socks need to be correctly fitted, and put on properly, which is something the compression fitter will go over with you at the store.

Are they hard to put on??

Due to the nature of the device, compression socks are somewhat harder to put on compared to regular socks. However some styles and materials are specifically designed for those with limited mobility or strength. There are also special tools (donning gloves, gliders etc.) that can help put the socks on. Essentially, with proper instruction, most people have no problem learning to put on the socks safely and effectively. In conclusion, compression therapy is a great option to help a lot of people live more comfortable and healthy lives. In addition to compression socks, elevating your legs at rest and daily exercise/activity can also help manage your symptoms. Remember, your family doctor, Athletic Therapist or other health care provider will be a valuable resource with any questions you may have. We are here to help, and can design a plan to put the spring back in your step!

Floyd Mayweather tells Roach: “I haven’t worked out a day” Although eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao is still very much absorbed with his duties as a Senator of his beloved Philippines, rumors have been circulating throughout the boxing community of a potential November 5 return to the ring. According to longtime promoter Bob Arum, the Pacman’s next bout will be staged in Las Vegas, Nevada, and could hit the renowned Thomas and Mack Center, which traditionally holds over 19K paying customers. Unfortunately, most have very little idea who Manny will be facing on this date, including his head trainer and longtime mentor, Freddie Roach. “Manny hasn’t called me yet, so there’s nothing that I have to worry about at this point, but if he does decide to fight again, he will call me and we’ll go over the opponent and who it may be,” stated the Hall of Fame trainer to Ontheropesboxing. com. “There’s a lot of rumors out there, but Manny still has a lot of fight left in him and the way that he trained for the last fight and the way he fought the last fight, I know he has at least two

really good fights left in him.” Despite the affirmation from the Top Rank CEO that Pacquiao’s choices have dwindled down to just two possible opponents, Terence Crawford and Jessie Vargas, Manny’s preference is still his longtime nemesis, Floyd Mayweather Jr. “We do want a rematch with Mayweather and we would like to get that. Mayweather has been to my gym a couple of times and I saw him at a restaurant in LA one time and he took pictures with my friends, he was very polite and very nice” But from what the currently retired “Money Man” of boxing indicated to Roach, the prospect of a rematch doesn’t look promising at the present time. “Mayweather told me he hasn’t trained a day since he retired and I said, ‘Hey, I thought you were a gym rat, you’re always in the gym’. He said, ‘I haven’t worked out a day since I retired’.” While it doesn’t seem likely that the self proclaimed “TBE” of boxing will return to the squared circle any time soon, Money May’s idle status isn’t deterring the Filipino Senator’s hopes of landing a rematch possible next year.

“I know Manny wants the rematch really bad,” Freddie stated in a recent interview with Jenna J of “On the Ropes Boxing Radio”. “Manny thought

he won the first fight and if you look at it with no commentating, you watch and see him landing more punches.” “I still was a little disappoint-

ed in Manny’s performance but now he’s one hundred percent and I think at one hundred percent, he will destroy him.”Joseph Herron

Rio readies for worst as terror threat hangs over Olympics RIO DE JANEIRO — A halfmillion foreign tourists, dozens of heads of state and the attention of the world’s media. If there were ever a headache for anti-terror forces, it’s the Olympics. In the aftermath of deadly attacks by the Islamic State

group in France and elsewhere, Brazil, which has almost no experience combatting terrorism, is beefing up security for the games that start in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5. Plans include doubling the number of security forces on the streets, erecting more checkpoints and working

closer with foreign intelligence agencies than Brazilians did in the 2014 World Cup. But will it be enough? Richard Ford, a retired FBI anti-terror expert who lives in Brazil, said that while the government has a robust program to keep athletes and venues safe, he worries that authorities aren’t taking the threat of a lone-wolf or suicide attack seriously enough. He cited comments by Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who surprised many last week by saying the chances of a terror attack at the games were “next to zero” and that the bigger concern is street crime. Just a day later, the federal police overseen by Moraes arrested 10 Brazilians allegedly belonging to an amateur cell that had professed allegiance to ISIS over the internet. “It’s very naive to think that the risks for terrorism are minimal,” said Ford, who has

worked on security at several Olympic Games. “In the last year, the risk of a terrorist attack has gone up exponentially everywhere.” Terror attacks have been rare, if horrifying at past Olympics. The most notorious was the 1972 massacre of 11 Israeli athletes and a police officer by a radical Palestinian group in Munich. A bomb planted by an anti-abortion protester killed one and injured 111 at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. “But Brazil has a lot of problems that other countries don’t have,” Ford said. “It’s sort of a perfect storm for anyone wanting to carry out an attack.” South America’s first-ever games have been plagued by a long list of problems, from the Zika epidemic and severe water pollution to slow ticket sales and questions about the readiness of infrastructure built for the games. Compounding the secu-

rity concerns is the deepest recession in decades, which has forced the cash-strapped Rio state government to slash spending and delay paychecks, and a distracting political crisis that led to the removal of President Dilma Rousseff while she faces an impeachment trial. To make up for the shortfall, the federal government has had to step in with almost $1 billion in emergency funding, much of which will be devoted to security. Extra police are also being deployed from other states. Many of Brazil’s security holes are ancient and hard to resolve. Long, porous borders it shares with 10 countries are a major conduit for arms and drug smugglers. Obtaining an assault rifle, or explosives, is easy from the criminal gangs that dominate Rio’s hillside slums. Last year, thieves even managed to steal a truck carrying a ton of dynamite. -By Mauricio Savarese and Joshua Goodman

Angel responds to netizen who compared her to Jessy MANILA – Angel Locsin just took in stride a comment of a netizen who directly compared her to actress Jessy Mendiola on social media. Mendiola is currently being romantically linked to Luis Manzano, Locsin’s former boyfriend.

Commenting on one of her Instagram posts, the netizen with the handle @baby__athena told Locsin: “Feeling sexy mas sexy pa si jessy sayo best actress pa si jessy number one sikat worldwide eh ikaw haha” Although several followers of Locsin already called out the Instagram user, the actress still took time to respond to @ baby__athena calmly. With a thumbs up emoticon, Locsin replied: “Ayos.” In a previous interview, Manzano already stressed that Mendiola had nothing to do with his breakup with Locsin. However, Locsin did not reaffirm Manzano’s suggestions that a third party was not involved in their split. “Kung anong sinabi niya. Lagi namang ganoon eh. Kung anong sinabi niya eh ‘di iyon na iyon. Kayo? Ano sa tingin niyo?” she said. As for Mendiola, she emphasized that she did not cause the breakup of former celebrity couple. “You know, honestly, if it were true, I wouldn’t be here right now facing you guys. For me, it was clear that they broke up already when Luis started courting me. Babae ako, it happened to me before. I wouldn’t do that to any other girl,” she said, crying.-ABS-CBN News

Miss PH-Earth Hollywood stars come out to winner reveals sign anti-Trump ‘pageant bullying’ petition

MANILA – Miss Philippines-Earth 2016 Imelda Bautista Schweighart claimed that she was a victim of “pageant bullying” from her fellow contestants prior to the coronation night of the recently concluded pageant. Schweighart even told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that several contestants hated her. “I lost my pageant heels, foundation and my only eye-shadow palette. Someone got those before coronation night. The heels are essential because they improve my height,” she was quoted as saying. “I’m surprised they went missing because I’m a very organized person. They were stolen, and my fellow candidates didn’t help,” she added.

Schweighart believes her fellow contestants did not like her because she has been winning the early awards “so they’re pulling me down.” For instance, she shared that one of the contestants gave her a certain type of oil that made her feel ill. “She told me it’s a brain booster. That’s what’s written on the bottle. It smelled like eucalyptus. I won’t name names, but I trusted the girl who gave it to me, so I took it before I entered the room,” she said. “But it made my sinuses act up and gave me a sore throat. I still felt sick until coronation [night]. I even got a toothache and I felt pain all over.” -ABS-CBN News

Piolo Pascual speaks up on viral photo with son Inigo Kapamilya actor Piolo Pascual said that he didn’t get surprised when some netizens turned malicious on his viral photo with son Inigo where they can be seen hugging each other. In an interview with PEP.ph, Piolo said, “Hindi ko na pinagtakahan ‘yun. ‘Yun talaga ‘yung nature ‘nung tao. Masama ‘yung mapagduda and my son didn’t see me for two months.

Ganu’n kami ka-affectionate sa isa’t isa so mainggit na lang sila, di ba?” Earlier, Piolo said that bashers no longer affect him. “Sa tagal ko ba naman sa industriya, papatol pa ba tayo? LOS ANGELES - About a hundred Hollywood actors and music stars, from Lena Dunham to Moby, have signed a petition against what they say is the “hateful ideology” of Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump. “We are a coalition of artists who, today, are joining millions of Americans in our commitment to defeat the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump,” the online pledge reads. “We believe it is our responsibility to use our platforms to bring attention to the dangers of a Trump presidency, and to the real and present threats of his candidacy.” Among others on

board: actors Kerry Washington, Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette, Jane Fonda and Woody Harrelson, and music stars Russell Simmons, Michael Stipe and DJ Spooky. Keen to throw a spotlight on potential threats posed by Trump, they warned that the billionaire real estate mogul “wants to take our country back to a time when fear excused violence, when greed fueled discrimination, and when the state wrote prejudice against marginalized communities into law.” US voters, the group said, should “use the power of our voice and the power of our vote to defeat Donald Trump and the hateful ideology he represents.” Americans will vote for president on November 8. —Agence France-Presse

“I am not used to this kind of life,” he added as he asked the officers to take their seats and address him as a mayor instead. The Chief Executive had served as Davao City mayor for decades. As mayor, Duterte would make the rounds of his city incognito or spend time with friends at his favorite piano bar after work, before calling it a day. He admitted feeling uncomfortable being called or addressed as President, as he offered to resign and vacate his post in three to four years if or when the French model of a federal system of government is adopted in the country.

The 71-year-old Chief Executive said his guards would knock at his door each morning to wake him up to start the workday. There were times, he continued, that he would shed tears while walking, remembering his father, or thinking about the problems facing him as President of the country. It is during these moments that he would simply tell himself “That’s life.” “Nagpaloko lang kasi ako… gusto ko suntukin ‘yung (nanloko),” Duterte said. (I allowed myself to be fooled… I want to punch (the one who had duped me into this),” he said. “Tapos pag-uwi ko magbabarge… matulog. Wala na lahat. Pagod ka na… tapos

tinanong ko ang sweldo, 130 – ‘Di mabuti pa nag-mayor ako yon lang pala. Ewan ko nga kung may allowance pa ako dito o wala. Hindi ako makatanong. Wala man akong matanungan (I go home by barge then I sleep. No more social life because you also get tired with all the work. And then they ask me how much I get paid, it is P130,000. It would have been better if I remained a mayor. I don’t even know if I have an allowance. I could not ask. I have no one to ask from),” he said, referring to the river crossing he makes each night from the Palace to Bahay Pagbabago across the Pasig, the Coast Guard ever alert. The President stressed the only reason he is staying in the job is his love for the country. The tough-talking Duterte – both famous and notorious for his unconventional approach to stamping out criminality, at times in a kind of brinkmanship with the law itself – was catapulted to power by over 16 million votes in the last May 9 elections. His campaign platform of change captivated a nation bruised by poverty, as well as by bureaucratic corruption and inefficiency. -By Giovanni Nilles

Teo said the DOT is looking at Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Boracay, Cebu, Palawan, Vigan and Mall of Asia in Pasay City as possible venues for the pageant. It will be the third time the Philippines would be hosting the event. The Philippines hosted Miss Universe pageants in 1974, held at the Folk Arts Theater, and in 1994 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. The Philippines has three Miss Universe titleholders to date: Gloria Diaz (1969), Margie Moran (1973) and current title holder Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Teo, for her part, decided to announce the country’s hosting of the pageant even after reports came out yesterday saying President Duterte rejected the invitation to host the event. The article quoted the President as saying he does not want to spend government money for the pageant. “There was this news article that came out that the Miss Universe will not push through, so I called Executive Secretary

BingBong (Salvador) Medialdea and told him, ‘Is it okay for me to announce that the Miss Universe will be here in the Philippines?’ And he said yes,” Teo said. Last July 18, Miss Universe president Paula Shugart, Miss Universe vice president Shawn McLain and Wurtzbach paid a courtesy call on Duterte to discuss the possibility of holding the pageant in the Philippines. In her social media accounts, Wurtzbach, who hails from Cagayan de Oro City, proudly noted her connection to the President, both of them being “Mindanaoans.” Wurtzbach also wished to crown her successor here. By the time that happens, her reign will be one year, one month and 11 days. The Philippines’ bet is Maria Mika Maxine Medina, The STAR’s Face of Allure on Sept. 7, 2014. Teo gave assurance that the private sector has volunteered to cover the $11-million funding needed to host the event. “The government is not going to spend a single centavo on it, it will be the private sector that will shoulder the expenses,” she said.-By Mary Grace Padin

Over the last 10 years, the processing time for virtually every class of newcomers, with the exception of economic immigrants, has mushroomed, has escalated to the point where I think it is unacceptable for Canada to ask spouses to wait typically 24 months before they are reunited, versus waiting periods like six to eight months in other countries to which we compare ourselves, like the U.K., the U.S., and Australia. Not just for spouses but for family class in general, my top priority is to bring down these processing times quickly.” A few weeks after that statement, on April 15, Immigration Minister John McCallum stated inside the House of Commons: “We will introduce major new initiatives to reduce processing times for spouses, who now have to wait up to two years or more which is totally unacceptable.”

It is apparent that the political will to make drastic and immediate changes exists. I will report on the impact of these changes in future articles. Let me share a quick look of a file that I had received in July this year. A gentleman traveled to India where he was married and shortly after, he began the paperwork to sponsor his wife. For well over two years, he and his wife have been waiting, both are anxious to be together as a family. He now has a baby girl who recently had her first birthday. The child was born in India and there, she waits with her mom thousands of miles away from her father. Having reviewed the file, I can only say that there is no justification for keeping this family apart. If Immigration cannot speed up the process, give them temporary visas so that both mom and daughter can come to Canada at the soonest possible time. (www.mpkevin.ca)
