MANILA, Philippines — The Chinese government has offered a $500-million loan to the Philippines, which can be used to procure defense equipment, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana revealed Sunday. On the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, Lorenzana said that the Philippines might procure defense equipment from China. This announcement comes after representatives of Chinese arms manufacturer Poly Technologies Inc. paid a courtesy call to President Rodrigo Duterte in Beijing.

"We are not saying that we will buy from them or we will not buy from them but if we need anything from the Chinese defense industry, we are going to procure using the loan that they are going to offer to us," Lorenzana said. Lorenzana noted that the loan from the Chinese government will be on standby as the Philippines will only use it once the military's modernization fund has been used up. On Monday, the Philippine government will sign a letter of intent to deal with the Chinese arms company.

$500-M arms loan to PH "What we discussed was we will be signing tomorrow a document on intent, intent only... It's just a letter of intent to deal with them because they are offering us a wide array of defense equipment," the Defense secretary said. The defense chief noted that the army, the Navy and the Air Force will be involved in selecting the equipment that will

be procured from the Chinese manufacturer. "We are not going to choose for them. They are going to choose for themselves, what they need from the Chinese defense industry," Lorenzana said. Lorenzana noted that arms from the Chinese manufacturer passed specifications of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday launched the Belt and Road Initiative, pledging $124 billion for his new Silk Road plan to expand links among Asia, Africa and Europe. Duterte, however, skipped the opening ceremony of the two-day summit after arriving past 11 p.m. on Saturday after a working visit in Hong Kong. Philstar

Philippines to save P10-B yearly on shift to renewable energy

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines stands to save over P10 billion a year if it replaces diesel generation in off-grid areas with renewables, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) said. A report done by IEEFA titled “Electricity-Sector Opportunities in the Philippines: The Case for Wind- and Solar-Powered Small Island Grids” calls for prudent reforms that will require electric cooperatives and private distribution utilities

alike to optimize procurement, to help level the playing field for renewable power generators and reduce taxpayer costs by phasing out subsidies for imported diesel fuel. “Small islands in the Philippines are placed perfectly to benefit from dramatically reduced costs of renewable energy. Simple reforms can pave the way for cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy for more than 800,000 of the poorest Filipinos,” IEEFA analyst Sara Jane Ahmed said. Under the current system, there are no incentives for

electric cooperatives to procure cheaper sources and reduce costs. “The Department of Energy should direct the National Power Corp.’s Small Power Utilities Group to speed up the hybridization of its plants and install as much renewable energy-powered plants in new sites identified for electrification,” Ahmed said. “Moreover, the National Electrification Administration should direct electric cooperatives to be technology-neutral in the procurement of power,” she added.

According to the report, investment opportunities in small island renewables are worth at least $1 billion to private developers in the country. At present, the country’s small islands are served by mini-grids powered by generators fueled by imported diesel and bunker oil. As a result of grid instability, inadequate generation capacity and lack of subsidized fuel, these islands suffer from blackouts and unplanned power outages. Power for the islands costs over P60 billion in subsidies despite only accounting for

six percent of total energy demand and 0.49 percent of total generation, based on the report. Moreover, not all islands have 24/7 electricity service even with expensive subsidies. Only 22 of 233 areas in question have 24/7 electricity, with over 70 percent having less than eight hours per day of electricity. “Currently, Philippine taxpayers are footing a huge bill by subsidizing expensive imported diesel to provide dirty and unreliable power for the small islands,” Ahmed said.Philstar

Pinoy Aquaman Ingerson Macarine conquers NY’s freezing Hudson River

Pinoy Aquaman Ingerson Macarine has successfully conquered the freezing Hudson River in New York in another daring long-distance swim on Sunday (Monday in Manila). In a post on his Facebook account, Macarine said he swam nonstop for an hour and 49 minutes from Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to Bannerman Island, covering a distance of 8.4 kilometers. The Pinoy Aquaman, also a lawyer, said the charity swim aims to promote clean beaches in the Philippines. "Diving into the freezing 57F water temperature of the Hudson River combined with

45F air temperature came as a shock as I have been used to the tropical waters of my beloved Philippines," the long-distance swimmer said in his Facebook post. He said the Hudson River swim was part of his preparation for his plan to swim across the 560-kilometer English Channel in August. Ingemar's longest recorded swim was in May 2014, when he successfully made a 23-kilometer swim from San Ricardo, Southern Leyte to Surigao City in Northern Mindanao in five and a half hours. —with a report from Leo Udtohan/ALG, GMA News

‘King Arthur’ opens to disastrous $14.7 million debut behind ‘Snatched’ The second weekend of summer at the North American took no prisoners. Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s male-fueled King Arthur: Legend of the Sword — costing $175 million to make before marketing — is a flop of epic proportions after launching to $14.7 million from 3,702 theaters to mark one of the worst openings in history for a big-budget studio event film. Piling on more bad news, King Arthur was beat in the U.S. by Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn’s Snatched in a surprise upset. The Mother’s Day actioncomedy opened to $17.5 million from 3,501 theaters. Fox spent a relatively modest $42 million to make the R-rated movie, but was certainly hoping for more, considering Schumer’s Trainwreck debuted to $30 million in summer 2015. Produced by Chernin Entertainment, Snatched follows a mother and daughter who find themselves trying to escape after being abducted on vacation in Ecuador. The comedy, earning mediocre reviews and a B CinemaScore, marks Hawn’s first

turn on the big screen in 15 years, as well as Schumer’s first film since Trainwreck. Snatched placed No. 2 behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which easily stayed atop the chart in its second weekend with an estimated $63 million-$64 million from 4,347 theaters. (The Disney and Marvel sequel grossed $16.4 million on Friday alone, more than King Arthur did in its entire weekend.) Guardians Vol. 2 will finish Sunday with nearly $250 million domestically and well north of $500 million globally. King Arthur, starring Charlie Hunnam as the mythical king and Jude Law as Merlin, is a dark origin story about the future royal’s tough upbringing in the back alleys of the city. But once Arthur pulls the sword from the stone, he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy. Astrid BergesFrisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen and Eric Bana also star. The film, whose release was delayed numerous times, was skewered by critics, but received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences. Males made up nearly 60 percent of the audience.-The Hol-

North Korea fires missile that lands in sea near Russia SEOUL/WASHINGTON North Korea, defying calls to curb its weapons program, fired a ballistic missile that landed in the sea near Russia on Sunday in a launch the United States called a message to South Korea days after its new president took office pledging to engage Pyongyang in dialogue. Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said the missile could be a new type. It flew for 30 minutes before dropping into the sea between North Korea's east coast and Japan. North Korea has consistently test-fired missiles in that direction. A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial assessments showed the missile landed 97 km (60 miles) south of Russia's Vladivostok region. The missile flew 700 km (430 miles) and reached an altitude of more than 2,000 km (1,245 miles), according to officials in South Korea and Japan, further and higher than an intermediaterange missile North Korea successfully tested in February from the same region of Kusong, northwest of its capital Pyongyang. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley called the launch a message by Pyongyang to South Korea after the election of President Moon Jae-in, who took office on Wednesday. "You first have to get into Kim Jong Un's head - which is, he's in a state of paranoia, he's

incredibly concerned about anything and everything around him," Haley told ABC's "This Week" program, referring to North Korea's leader. Haley added that the United States will "continue to tighten the screws" on North Korea, mentioning sanctions and working with the international community to put pressure on Pyongyang. Moon held his first National Security Council in response to the launch, which he called a "clear violation" of UN Security Council resolutions, his office said. The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Tuesday to discuss the launch, diplomats said on Sunday. The US military's Pacific Command said it was assessing the type of missile that was fired but it was "not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile". The US threat assessment has not changed from a national security standpoint, a US official said. An intercontinental ballistic missile is considered to have a range of more than 6,000 km (3,700 miles). The White House mentioned Russia in its earlier statement about the launch. "With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil – in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan – the President cannot imagine that Russia is pleased," the White House said, referring to US President Donald Trump. Radio signal from space baffles scientists

A recently-detected radio signal from space mystifies scientists, who have no idea what it is or from where in the universe it originated. The cosmic radio signal is a fast radio burst (FRB) – a burst of energy a billion times brighter than anything ever seen in the Milky Way galaxy. It is but one of 22 FRBs observed over the last decade, and they remain a mystery scientists are working hard to unravel. Even pointing a telescope or other hi-tech instruments in the direction they came from has yielded no concrete answers – so it’s no surprise scientists have made little progress since the discovery of the first FRB in 2007. It’s possible they come from outside the galaxy. At least one FRB has been observed to repeat. They’re so mysterious that theories about their nature and origin range from extraterrestrial spacecraft to microwaves. While 22 FRBs make the phenomenon seem rare, scientists are convinced these bursts occur frequently, with over 2,000 of them bringing illumination to the cosmos each day. What makes them so hard to find is their extremely brief duration, which lasts an estimated 5 milliseconds. It was only early this year that researchers could confirm that FRBs aren’t the product of interference from Earth, but instead come from space. The curious case of FRB 150215 So far this newest burst – which was named FRB 150215 after the date of its detection on February 15, 2015 by Australia’s Parkes Telescope – has proven the most puzzling. Even after scrutinizing the phenomenon

using a variety of telescopes, the scientists are still no closer to figuring out what it means. “We spent a lot of time with a lot of telescopes to find anything associated with it,” stated the study’s first author, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy’s Emily Petroff. “We got new wavelength windows we’ve never gotten before. We’re still trying to figure out where this one came from.”

Without a trace While Petroff and her colleagues had no trouble viewing FRB 150215 through a number of telescopes worldwide, the burst left behind no trace of light. In fact, the scientists could not detect any sort of signal. Strange for something that produces the energy of as many as 500 million Suns. “The burst was followed up with 11 telescopes to search for radio, optical, X-ray, gammaray, and neutrino emission,” said the scientists. “Neither transient nor variable emission was found to be associated with the burst, and no repeat pulses have been observed in 17.25 hours of observing.” “I have to say this is a fantastic paper but it is a bummer of a paper,” said Shami Chatterjee, a Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science senior research associate. “They threw every resource that we have at this FRB. They followed up with TNT, ANTARES, The Australian Telescope, Swift, Chandra, Magellan, the Dark Energy Camera, GMRT, Lovell, the VLA, and they see nothing. It is incredibly important in the

sense that even with relatively prompt follow-up there isn’t an afterglow or counterpart that is obvious.” Our experience with these FRBs is comparable to hearing a noise, turning around to identify the source and cause of the noise, only to find nothing even after searching 22 distinct places. In the case of FRB 150215, the researchers whirled around and used an enormous range of detection instruments – from Geiger counters to flashlights – all to no avail.

‘Some kind of hole’ Just as weird is how we were able to detect FRB 150215 – which should have been impossible from Earth. From its direction, the burst could have only reached us by passing through a region in the Milky Way galaxy possessed of extreme density.MICHAEL LOGARTA/TJD, GMA News

Businesses bolster cyber defenses for new ransomware attacks TORONTO/FRANKFURT Businesses around the world scrambled on Saturday to prepare for a renewed cyber attack, convinced that a lull in a computer offensive that has stopped car factories, hospitals, schools and other organizations in around 100 countries was only temporary. The pace of the attack by a destructive virus dubbed WannaCry slowed late on Friday, after the so-called “ransomware” locked up more than 100,000 computers, demanding owners pay to $300 to $600 get their data back. “It’s paused but it’s going to happen again. We absolutely anticipate that this will come back,” said Patrick McBride, an executive with cyber-security firm Claroty. Symantec predicted infections so far would cost tens of millions of dollars, mostly from cleaning corporate networks. Ransoms paid so far amount to only tens of thousands of dollars, one analyst said, but he

predicted they would rise. Companies rushed to protect Windows systems with patches that Microsoft released last month and on Friday. WannaCry exploited a vulnerability to spread itself across networks, a rare and powerful feature that caused infections to surge on Friday. Code for exploiting that bug, which is known as “Eternal Blue,” was released on the internet in March by a hacking group known as the Shadow Brokers. The group claimed it was stolen from a repository of National Security Agency hacking tools. The agency has not responded to requests for comment. The identity of the Shadow Brokers is not known, though many security researchers say they believe they are in Russia, which is a major source of ransomware and was one of the countries hit first and hardest by WannaCry. Cyber security experts, who have been on watch for months for an “Eternal Blue”-based at-

SCI-TECH tack, said on Saturday that they expect the computer code to be used in types of cyber attacks beyond extortion campaigns, including efforts to seize control of networks and steal data. Governments and private security firms on Saturday that they expect hackers to tweak the malicious code used in Friday’s attack, restoring the ability to self-replicate. Those expectations prompted busi-

nesses to call in technicians to work over the weekend to make sure networks were protected with security updates needed to thwart Eternal Blue. “It’s all hands on deck,” said Shane Shook, an independent security consultant whose customers include large corporations and governments. Guillaume Poupard, head of France’s national cyber security agency, told Reuters he

Bear locks itself in Virginia resident's car, honks horn May 12 (UPI) -- Police in Virginia said a 200-pound black bear accidentally locked itself inside a resident's car and honked the horn until it was freed. The Roanoke County Police Department said Glenvar area resident Ryan McClanahan and his family woke about 5 a.m. Thursday to the sound of their car's horn blaring. Officer Thayer responded to the call and discovered a 200-pound black bear had managed to get into the unlocked car and closed itself inside. "The baby bear found some treats inside and caused minor damage to the vehicle," the police department said in a Facebook post. "The officer was able to open the back door and the little guy eventually found his way out and ran off into the woods." "Good crime prevention tip from Officer Thayer: always lock your car doors. It's not just thieves that break into your cars!" the post said. "Thank you Officer Thayer!! It was quite alarming, and we appreciate your swift, effective action!!" Partners become rivals in

“I Can Do That” ABS-CBN talent-variety show “I Can Do That” kicks the competition up a notch by pitting iCandidates performing together in an act against each other beginning this weekend (May 6 and 7). The change sets partners in opposition as they try to outshine each other while also giving solid performances. How will this affect the iCandidates’ collaborative approach to make their acts stand out? This week, JC Santos at Gab Valenciano will showcase their grace and flexibility in their rhythmic gymnastics act, while Arci Munoz and Wacky Kiray will try to make viewers laugh in their foot puppet act. The trio of Cristine Reyes, Daniel Matsunaga, and Sue Ramirez, meanwhile, will keep viewers on the edge of their seats as they perfect their chair balancing act. The competition also gets tougher this time, because only one iCandidate will be named the winner every week. After all of the performances, all of the iCandidates get to choose the performer in each act who they think stood out. The studio audience then votes for the weekly winner. Last week, Pokwang was officially eliminated from the competition after she

volunteered to drop out so she can spend more time with her daughter. Now, only seven iCandidates remain, and Daniel is still ahead of the others on the scoreboard. Will the others catch up and finally dethrone

him this week? Find out in “I Can Do That” on ABS-CBN. For updates, like www.facebook.com/ICanDoThatPH or follow @ICanDoThatPH on Twitter or Instagram.

My point is there are many reasons why a citizenship ceremony is such an emotional and memorable event to take part in. At this recent citizenship event, it was a young lady who quickly grabbed a large Canada flag and wrapped it around her body as we began singing our

‘What Do You Want?’

IGHT after the Lord Jesus Christ mentioned to His disciples that He is going to be delivered to the religious leaders, condemn Him to death, mocked, scourged, crucified and on the third day be raised up, the mother of James and John comes to Jesus, and kneeling down, asked a favour of Him.” Jesus says in verse 21of Matthew chapter 20, “What do you want?” I think He knows what she wants, but He’s graciously giving her an opportunity to express it. She says “Give your word that these two sons of mine will be awarded the highest places of honor in your kingdom, one at your right hand, one at your left hand.” One of the things I like about this mom is that she wants her kids to be as close to Jesus as possible! She wants her kids to be great in the kingdom of heaven. That’s what I admire about mothers. You bring your kids to worship gathering, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School because you want them to be as close to Jesus as possible.

The problem is that when we pray for certain things, we don’t always know what we’re getting ourselves into. Sometimes, we don’t know what we’re asking! Nevertheless, there are three things wrong with Mrs. Zebedee’s request. Number one: Her timing is terrible. Jesus is saying “I’m going to be mocked and flogged and crucified and treated like dirt before I go back to heaven.” And she’s saying “Oh, and when you get there, can you make sure that my kids have the best seats?” It’s like “didn’t you hear what Jesus said? This is a time to meditate, not a time to make requests.” Number two: She needs to remember that being great in the eyes of God is not about where you sit up there. It’s about how you live your life

WannaCry

EBSITES of several government agencies and private companies have been hacked in the recent past, so the news about a global cyber attack using a ransomware program called WannaCry should raise alarm bells.

PASTOR FRED SEBASTIAN

The attack, which demanded ransom payments emailed by web link or attachment in 28 languages, hit 230,000 computers running Microsoft Windows in 99 countries when it was launched last Friday. WannaCry reportedly used an infection vector developed by the US National Security Agency. A kill switch was quickly found, but an updated version reportedly lacks the kill switch.

Living Hope down here! Sharing the message of Christ and treating people with the same compassion and consideration you’d want for yourself. That’s what makes a person great in the eyes of God! Number three: Mrs. Zebedee doesn’t realize that the road to kingdom greatness is paved with trials and challenges and difficulties. And so Jesus answers her request with a great line: He says “You don’t know what you’re asking.” How often do you think God listens to our prayers, shakes His head, and says “You don’t

As news of the WannaCry attack spread, Philippine authorities reassured the public that cyber security measures were being stepped up. The government is also setting up a secure data center in Subic. Events in the recent past, however, have exposed the continuing high vulnerability of the country to cyber attacks. Last year the vulnerability was exploited in laundering $81 million through two Philippine casinos and a commercial bank. The money was stolen by hackers, believed to be from North Korea, from the Bangladesh central bank’s account in the US Federal Reserve in New York. The cyber heist, still unsolved, prompted analysts to describe the Philippines as a “black hole” that could be exploited by cyber thieves and money launderers. The weakness in cyber security makes the country vulnerable to many other criminal activities that have been facilitated by the internet. The country should not be lacking in tech-savvy individuals who can improve cyber security. Computer courses are among the most popular in the country, although many graduates are working overseas. In 2000, a Filipino computer graduate unleashed the “Love Bug” virus that wreaked havoc in at least 20 countries and caused losses estimated at up to $10 billion. Instead of using their skills for mischief, local techies can be tapped in fighting computer viruses and hackers. The WannaCry attack should give urgency to boosting cyber security. Philstar

According to Xinhua, “More than 1,200 people will attend the forum among them officials, scholars, entrepreneurs, representatives of financial institutions, and media organizations from 110 nations. If the New York Times sends a reporter, China is counting the United States in that “110 (now 130) nations” figure. We very nearly did not make it to be part of this gargantuan effort to unite the world. If former President “Noynoy” Aquino or his Liberal Party were in power it would have been unthinkable. FROM A DISTANCE Chinese policy makers as a multi-billion initiative to link Asia with Europe and Africa, and the countries in between. It came from the ancient Silk Road, the passage from Asia to Europe through some of the most beautiful sights in nature. It connects China, Central Asia, Russia and Europe (the Baltic), with the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean through Central Asia and West Asia, and connecting China with Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Indian Ocean. The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road is from China’s coast to Europe through the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean on one route, and from China’s coast through the South China Sea to the South. It is more than a diplomatic coup by China and if done rightly would unite the world together

We very nearly did not make it to be part of this gargantuan effort to unite the world. If former President “Noynoy” Aquino or his Liberal Party were in power it would have been unthinkable. But luckily we are under President Duterte’s stewardship. by creating the physical road to represent the much derided theory of “globalism.” I regret I was not able to attend Ambassador Zhao Jianhua’s speech before the Anvil group of Chinese Filipinos (not Filipino Chinese as Ambassador Chan who developed the Oishi products corrected me). Zhao was one of the most loved Chinese ambassadors to Manila not only because he was articulate in English and able to convey his country’s policies but he also played golf where he became a close friend of Philippine media personalities. I have excerpted from his speech before Anvil – the organization of young Chinese Filipinos. He told them to take advantage of “the warming up of China-Philippines relations as a new era for bilateral economic partnership and cooperation.” “In ancient times, the Philippines played a crucial role in the ancient Maritime Silk Road

and the Galleon Trade. Thanks to the trade route, many foreign staple food such as corns and potatoes were introduced into China and saved the Chinese people from famine and starvation in history. As an important hub of both ancient and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, as well as a founding member of the AIIB, the Philippines will find fresh energy from this strategy to purse inter-connected and win-win development. The ASEAN community building vision will foster a favorable environment for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) stakeholders. One example is that during the Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang’s visit to the Philippines last March, more than 670 Filipino and Chinese SMEs participated in a cross-border business matching session and forged deals. The Filipino-Chinese entrepreneurs are a special asset to bridge China and the Philippines. Your unique cultural identity presents enormous

opportunities for you to get a deeper understanding of the two cultures, and to serve as linkages for mutual exchanges and cooperation between our two countries in various sectors. China has a time-honored civilization, spanning uninterrupted over 5,000 years, influenced by many traditional philosophies such as the moral injunction of fidelity to one’s parents and brothers, the sense of propriety, justice, integrity and honor, unremittingly pursuit of self-renewal, emphasis on benevolence and kindness towards fellow human beings and belief that man should seek harmony with nature and harmony among themselves while shelving differences. China now has the fastest computer in the world and has just hit a milestone in developing quantum computer to eclipse all others. I advise you to travel to China more, and also to bring more Chinese friends and business partners to the Philippines. I hope you could pay more attention to the regional and global dynamics and adopt a paradigm shift, therefore seizing the opportunities out of this rapidly changing world. Bring back ROTC after reforming it

OD forbid, but if war breaks out, how will our under-equipped 310,000+ soldiers and policemen, reinforced by our token air force and navy defend the country against invaders? A force-multiplier would be a citizens’ army or a reservist system envisioned in Article II, Section 4, which says: “The Government may call upon the people to defend the State and… all citizens may be required, under conditions provided by law, to render personal, military or civil service.” In a national mobilization, do we simply gather all ablebodied men and hand them rifles and bullets (assuming we have enough to pass around) and attach them to regular military units after a hurried pep talk? Sorry for that rather crude characterization of a hypothetical emergency, but what else are we prepared to do quickly? One of the things we must do BEFORE the shooting starts is – as proposed by President Rodrigo Duterte – restore in the curriculum the mandatory military training of qualified youths and the conscription of physically fit out-of-school citizens. The military training of college students can be given impetus by a reformed basic/ advance Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, whose revival President Duterte has been pushing. (Another advocate of ROTC is PhilSTAR columnist Bobit S.

Sorry for that rather crude characterization of a hypothetical emergency, but what else are we prepared to do quickly? Avila.). After mentioning terrorism and the drug problem in his speech at the recent 60th Palarong Pambansa in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, the President disclosed again his plan to include mandatory military training in the curriculum. It so happened that last Friday, May 12, was the 25th anniversary of the reactivation of the Army Reserve Command whose mission is to “maintain, administer, develop, train, and organize reservist units to help enhance national security and development.” No longer mandatory, ROTC is now only one of three options under the National Service Training Program. The other options are civic welfare training service and literacy training service. The President said the scrapping of ROTC because of cases of fatal hazing and some anomalies was “very shortsighted.” Students should “go back” to ROTC, he added, and at least learn how to handle weapons in the defense of the country. • ‘Hunters ROTC’ as guerrilla unit AFTER the Philippines fell to Japanese invaders in May 1942, guerrilla forces sprang up all over the islands to continue the resistance, among them

surviving Filipino-American units, local armed groups, and the “Hunters ROTC” consisting of undergraduate cadets. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, seeing how the guerrillas fought Japanese occupation forces until he returned in October 1944 to liberate the islands, was so impressed by their grit and gallantry that he declared: “Give me ten thousand Filipinos and I shall conquer the world!” In supporting President Duterte’s plan to return mandatory ROTC training for qualified youths, I speak from personal experience. I know how it helps mold one’s body, mind and character. Counting academics aside, my being a UPROTC cadet officer was one of the two major influences in my life on the Diliman campus, the other one being the enriching of my faith as member of the UP Student Catholic Action. Among the things that ROTC develops in the trainee are Discipline and Loyalty, which refine a person’s character and define his constructive role as a member of a team, and as a citizen. We imbibed Elbert Hubbard’s “Loyalty” (“If you work for a man, in heaven’s name work for him, speak well of him.…”) that loomed large at

the entrance of the DMST building that also housed our officers’ quarters in front of which we would fall into formation every morning, for inspection and exercise.

Later, the hotel receives a call and the caller asks for (as an example) Room 620 – which happens to be yours. The phone rings in your room. You answer and the caller says:

Such seemingly tedious drills as snappily obeying orders to “march” or “halt” without thinking prepared one for lifeand-death settings. Imagine what would happen if a soldier in a battle situation has to debate first with himself whether or not to obey an order of his squad leader.

“This is the front desk. When checking in, we came across a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits/numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.”

Among the many other things that ROTC taught me is the handling of firearms, especially marksmanship. I look back with satisfaction to my days as reporter of the pre-martial rule Manila Times, when I won as a gun club member a number of medals for precision shooting in inter-media competitions. Someday I will write more of those Diliman days with the UP Vanguard and the UPSCA. • Alert out on a new hotel scam AN ALERT on a new hotel scam is shared by Angel Javier of GMA-7 and Liza Carreon

Not sensing anything wrong, since the call seems to have come from the front desk, you oblige. But actually, it is a scam by someone calling from outside the hotel. They have asked for a random room number, then ask you for your credit card and address information. They sound so professional that you think you are talking to the front desk. If you encounter this scenario, tell the caller that you will be down to the front desk to clear up any problem. Then, go to the front desk or call directly and ask if there was a problem. If there was none, inform the hotel manager that someone tried to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee. Philstar

TIP SHEET

ADVANTAGES OF KEEPING YOUR

INTERIOR CLUTTER-FREE

N

o matter what the outside environment may be like, your driving experience is greatly affected by the atmosphere you create inside your car. Allow me to enumerate the benefits of having a spic and span cabin:

1) Safety. As always, safety should be at the top of your list. Having unnecessary stuff laying around in your cabin isn't exactly ideal for a hassle-free drive. Imagine a stray water bottle rolling about, eventually finding its way between your brake pedal and the flooring beneath it when a vehicle in front of you suddenly stops (this can happen). What follows may not be a pretty sight, if you catch my drift. A clean and clear cabin equals a safer drive.

2) It helps reduce stress. If the madness on our local roads is already a bit too much for you, having a disorganized and sloppy interior can push your driving stress through the roof. There's nothing more irritating than hearing banging noises inside your car as you accelerate or tap on the brakes. Even the sight of stuff on your seats or floor can be distracting. Tidying up and getting organized by removing things you don't need inside your cabin and getting the junk out of your trunk will definitely up your zen and boost serotonin levels. That includes your collection of bobbing head figures and stuffed animals. Oh, and do yourself a favor by unplugging and stowing your auxiliary and charging cords when not in use, unless you want your cockpit to look like the accessories section of CD-R King. 3) It’ll help preserve the beauty of your interiors. I know quite a few people who love to haul food and drinks in their car like it's a minibar-on-wheels or a dinein drive-thru hub. There are even those who carry volatile and harmful liquids like brake fluid or transmission oil. You run the risk of staining and damaging your interiors with such items. Even hard objects like tools not stowed in their proper place can bang up your interiors when the G-forces fling them around. ď ´

Keep in mind that you should only bring what's necessary; invest in a cargo organizer plus a decent toolbox to keep things in their appropriate place. As a detailer, I always carry a kikay kit where everything I need is nicely tucked away, including emergency devices. 4) You keep your car pestfree. Nothing attracts pesky critters more than a dirty vehicle. Always clean up after yourself and your passengers, then you won't have to deal with such infestations. 5) Your car won't look like a dumpster. I’d like to believe that the way your car looks and how you treat it reflects your persona to some extent. There's nothing like winning the admiration of your passengers and making them feel like they've stepped into a multimillion-peso car despite its actual market value. For all you know, your next passenger could be the woman or man of your dreams.-By Manskee Nascimento

KC Concepcion surprises her second ‘nanay’ MANILA, Philippines — Actress and TV host KC Concepcion was recently asked to pay tribute to women that had the most impact on her. Many expected her to present her mom, “Megastar” Sharon Cuneta. Instead, she gave honor to her nanny since childhood, Nanay Lina, which surprised everyone, including her nanny. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a very special night for me because I really want to introduce to you…She is our household help and in Philippine culture, the household help, we treat them like family. So, I really just want to take this time to honor her and thank our nanny from when I was a child,” the star declared in a recent press presentation by Downy Parfum. “Filipinos are very service-oriented and it causes changes on people’s lives,” she said. “The reason I chose her (Nanay Lina) is really because she is my guiding light and also the woman who was with me when my mother was busy working. My mother entrusted me to her, in her lap, and she writes me handwritten notes with cards, very heart-warming, every month, every time she sees me. I don’t usually see us honor the household help that devoted their lives to us.” According to her, it will be really nice to pay tribute to people who are not really talked about because they work behind-the-scenes. “Nanay, thank you so much for all your love! I love you so much! Thank you for all your service to our family,” KC said to her Nanay Lina. “We all have our own Nanay Linas as nanays, so I want to put the spotlight on her,” she said of her caregiver, who had to forgo having her own family and considered KC as her own. Like KC, Sharon has also found a second mom in Yaya Loring, who took care of the Megastar for around 40 years. Fondly called the “Mega Yaya,” Yaya Loring even starred with Sharon in a funny TV commercial. Yaya Loring passed away in 2010.

MAXENE MAGALONA shares more details about her upcoming wedding AFTER getting engaged to her model boyfriend Robbie Mananquil last February, Maxene Magalona admitted it was only recently that they started planning for their big day. “I’ve been super good. I’m still on cloud nine sobrang saya. Hindi pa rin makapaniwala pero andito na nga (laughs). Actually we just started planning because Rob and I decided not to give in to the stress because one thing I noticed since we started planning is that it can get really stressful. Like there are so many things pala that you need to think of. I actually never thought that I would get engaged, hindi ko siya in-expect so now that I’m actually engaged and I have to think of all the things oh my gosh how do these brides do it? There are so many things that you need to think of. That’s why we’ve only just begun planning and we don’t have an exact date yet but we’re have a lot of ideas already but wala pa for now,” she shared during the launch of the BG Bridal Gallery mobile app held last May 11 in Taguig city. The wedding which Maxene said will probably happen next year will not be an over-the-top event. “As a girl ata it’s innate in us to have a fantasy wedding.

You can’t help it. Especially we grew up watching all the Disney princesses and you dream of that dream. I’ve been married on TV many times and I’ve seen so many different themes. But honestly I’ve never had that one dream wedding. When you’re younger, it’s different. You want the fairytale kind of wedding right? But as you grow older especially since I’m turning 31 it’s all about practicality also. This is just the first step. You still have to think about your expenses after you get married,” she explained. Maxene shared what her idea of the real theme of her wedding should be. “I guess having a dream wedding is not just about the theme but I guess it’s about the love that you share with your partner. And I’ve always been about the true love kind. The love that’s true and I guess that’s the most important thing and I’m getting that with Rob. So no matter what wedding we have, it’s what’s going to happen after which is what I’m more excited about. And about how we can spend our lives together and that’s the most important thing. So I guess my dream wedding would have to be a true love theme wedding,” she added. -Rhea Manila Santos

Sam Milby admits he doesn’t know if he’s invited to Anne Curtis’s wedding DURING the media launch for his newest album Sam:12 under Star Music, Sam Milby said he is not going to make a big deal about turning 33 later this month. “My birthday actually is in three weeks. I don’t really have any plans. Ginawa ko na yung big celebration nung nag-30 ako. Hindi naman kailangan ng celebration. Parang simpleng dinnner lang with friends, nothing too much. Parang when you hit 30, parang hindi na kailangan mag-celebrate. Maybe when I hit 40 may celebration. Wala akong wish eh. I guess na maraming bibili ng album and maraming makikinig sa album ko sa digital media kasi I’m actually very proud of this album. I can’t think of any wish for myself, just enjoying life and enjoying what’s happening and thankful na after 12 years I’m still here and I’m still working. I just want to travel more. That’s another thing I want to do. I love traveling. Explore the world more while I can. That’s it,” he shared during the Star Music event last May 10 held inside the ABS-CBN compound. As he turns one year older, Sam said he has noticed one big change with his friends. “Parang lahat ng kaibigan may asawa na. My very first friend sa buong buhay ko Ben Evans he’s living here sa Pilipinas ngayon, yung kasal niya was last week. When you feel it’s the right time, when you feel it’s the right one, dun and I guess that’s the plus side of being a guy, you don’t have that time frame na you feel pressured. But of course I still want to be at a good age to be able to play with my kids. I still want to be young enough to enjoy their youth. I don’t feel too pressured. Basta I’m hoping within my 30s gusto ko siyempre. My dad was 49 when he had me. He was quite old. He’s turning 83 this year. Basta when you feel it’s the right one and the right time and I pop the question, dun na lang malalaman. If it comes to that point I will let you guys know. Pero ayoko ng inuunahan niyo,” he shared. Sam said he is also happy about the engagement of his ex-girlfriend Anne Curtis. “I was happy for her. They been together for I think mag-se-seven years na. Hindi ko alam kung invited ako (sa wedding),” he admitted. Although photos of himself and girlfriend Mari Jasmine are on social media, Sam said they both agreed to keep important details like when they started dating to themselves. “It hasn’t been that long. Medyo bago pa lang kami. Ayoko ng pag-usapan yun. What I also appreciate about Mari is she’s also a very, very private person when it comes to her personal life. When it comes to our relationship she doesn’t like questions either. Which is hard because me being in showbiz I normally share a lot but I also want to respect her wanting a more private relationship and I do like that actually. Parang having it to yourself,” he added. Unlike most celebrities, Sam said if ever he will plan a proposal it will be a more intimate and private affair. Sam considers having a non-showbiz girlfriend a big advantage. “When you have a more private relationship and when most of my relationships have been in the public eye it’s nice to have more privacy when it comes to that part of your personal life,” he said.-Rhea Manila Santos

Ang ‘Bato’ ni Darna: PNP chief meets Angel Locsin MANILA- Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa has finally met his celebrity crush Angel Locsin... but only after he was allowed by his wife. Dela Rosa on Saturday posted a photo of him and Locsin with the caption: "With the permission of my wife, I've finally met my crush, Angel Locsin." The PNP chief previously admitted that he had a crush on the former Darna star. He even said that he hoped Locsin would reprise the role of the iconic Filipino heroine. "Huwag na [nating] balik-balikan 'yan, nagagalit na misis ko. Mamaya sigurado ako, mamalasin ako mamaya. Pero ito, sa totoo lang, in fairness crush ko si Angel Locsin. Maganda," Dela Rosa said on the ABS-CBN morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda" last year.

GUIDELINES FOR

HEALTHY

These guidelines have worked well for me over the years. There may be something you can add to these in improving your healthy lifestyle but these are the ones that still stand out from health studies and selfdiscoveries.

LIVING

1. Exercise daily:

Our body is designed to move and we know exercising is good for us. Why? It helps the joints and muscles to loosen up, promote blood flow throughout the body. Exercising also helps clear the mind and release toxins out of the body by sweating. I love exercising so I run, lift weights, do different resistance training, stretching, Zumba and walking. Find something you love to do because you will enjoy your training sessions rather than feeling like it’s a chore.

2. Drink plenty of water:

We were not allowed to drink sugary drinks while playing sports. It feels heavy on your gut and also they contain lots of sugar. Studies show that sugary drinks are one of many contributors to weight gain. I learned to drink water throughout the day and consistently. I know it is tough for many and that you increase your trips to the washroom but it is a positive thing. Drinking water is the simplest way to cleanse the body and the digestive system. Keeping hydrated is a must because the human body consist of 75% water. This is why you must drink plenty of water throughout the day.

3. Eat fruits and veggies:

We know that eating fruits and vegetables are good for our body. Why? Fruits and vegetables have what is called phytonutrients (nutrients only found in plants). Varieties are recommended by the Canada food guide (eat from all colors of the rainbow). The variety of fruits and vegetables work synergistically in our body and have different nutrients we need. Our body knows what to do when we flood our body with as many fruits and vegetables daily compared to eating processed food. 

B

EING active all my teenage years up to today kept me learning more and more about healthy living. My athletic university years playing at an elite level taught so much about keeping my body healthy by eating healthier, avoiding sugary drinks and junk food. It is when I became an Athletic Therapist and a Personal Trainer that I have practiced all that I learned about healthy lifestyle. I will share with you what I’ve learned and have continued learning to improve what I already apply to my day-to-day life with myself and my family.

Leonard’s injury spotlights

a debated and dangerous NBA play Kawhi Leonard had already launched his jump shot and Zaza Pachulia kept sliding toward him while Leonard was in the air. Leonard landed on Pachulia's foot and crashed to the court in pain. Dirty? Possibly. Dangerous? Absolutely. The play that knocked Leonard out of the game with an injured left ankle and helped Golden State's huge rally in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals is one the NBA started cracking down on four seasons ago in an effort to protect jump shooters. But with long-distance shots playing such a heavy role in offenses these days, the risk of injury isn't going away. Nor is the debate — one the

Spurs have seen from both sides — that raged long after the Warriors' 113-111 victory Sunday. While Leonard is respected for the way he defends without fouling, opponents hated the way former defensive ace Bruce Bowen crowded too closely on their jumpers. "We see this quite often in the NBA where that defender, they just go a little too far and you're not allowed to take the landing area away from the jump shooter," Joe Borgia, the NBA's senior vice president of replay and referee operations, said Sunday while discussing the foul that was called on Pachulia on his "Making the Call" video segment on NBA.com. "Obviously a very dangerous

situation for players, and the referee luckily stayed on that play all the way until the shooter landed and the foul was called on the play." That wasn't enough for ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy, who argued that Pachulia should have been called for a flagrant one for intentionally sliding under Leonard, which both players denied. "Did he step under it? Like on purpose? No," Leonard said afterward. "He was contesting a shot. The shot clock was coming down. I'll have to see the play." Pachulia said he was just trying to contest the shot and seemed surprised at first that a foul was even called, though many observers on social media thought the play looked suspect.

"Zaza's not a dirty player. You've got to time that perfectly if you want to hurt somebody," teammate Kevin Durant said. "We're not that type of team. Kawhi's an unbelievable player. We've got nothing but respect for him. We wish that he gets healthy. We just tried to contest a shot. Guys are playing hard. It was an unfortunate situation, I wish it didn't happen, but I don't think it was intentional. You can't listen to people on Twitter, they're irrational." But they aren't the only ones lately wondering if one of those fouls was intentional. Markieff Morris did the same after the Washington forward landed on Al Horford's foot in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifi-

nal, knocking him out of a game the Celtics rallied to win. Realizing the potential for ankle injuries — a problem for Warriors star Stephen Curry earlier in his career — the NBA made the play one of its points of emphasis for officials before the 2013-14 season , stressing that shooters had to be given the freedom to land. But in a series like the West finals, matching the Warriors' lethal outside shooters against a Spurs team that led the league in 3-point percentage during the regular season, neither team is going to want to allow too much space. That's all Pachulia had in mind. -Associated Press/BRIAN MAHONEY

Kris Aquino to force

Bimby to become a doctor

4. Sleep 7-8 hours a night:

Sleep is one of the most challenging aspects of being healthy for people who work in shifts or during evening/midnight. Some people can function with 6-7 hours and some can’t unless they get 10 hours of sleep. I have experienced sleeping less than 5 hours and I don’t like it. Sleep is so important because our body needs to rest to be able to function normally the next day. It is now tougher to sleep without using an electronic device before bed but I am trying my hardest. Set your smartphone on do not disturb mode at a time that is suitable with your schedule. I set mine from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. This option will block any text or social media notifications.

MANILA, Philippines — After learning that one of the doctors in a press conference lately was pressured by her family to become a doctor, actress and TV host Kris Aquino thought of doing the same for her second son, Bimby. “Ah! So, pwede mag-force? Okay! Got it! I will!” she quipped, sending her audience on a laugh trip during the recent antibacterial solution Fucidin’s press conference. “I keep telling Bimby, ‘Your mom is not always healthy, so you better become a doctor, honey,” the star shared. “I’m always jealous of those na may doctor sa pamilya because isang tawag lang, nandyan na right away.” She admitted that she has been strict to her sons. “I’m not a chill mom. Ako talaga, you have to (do it)!” Now that she has met a doctor who did not seem to mind being "forced" into the profession, she believes Bimby would not find it hard

to fall in love with it. In fact, this early, Kris declared, “Bimby wants to be a geneticist, but I want him to be an anesthesiologist or a cardiologist.” She vowed to never stop until Bimby fits into a lab gown like a hand to a glove. “I will do that every day of my life. Mind conditioning talaga!” She, however, clarified that by “force,” she means “positive reinforcement.” For now, just like any mother, she also dabbles as her children’s “doctor mom.” “I’m a working mom. Although I can’t work at home, I make sure we, the midwife and I, have a list of things to do. We make sure to have a ready speed dial for the pedia,” she narrated. Upon hearing that the other mom in the press con panel has a “wonderful husband,” Kris, a single parent, joked: “Ang sarap ka sabunutan!” Philstar

5. Meditate/Quiet time:

I specifically like to have a quiet time during the day especially when I do my stretching. I like to focus on deep breathing as it helps clear my head. Simple meditation is also good and I consider my deep breathing a meditation technique. Also, my long distance run or walks are also my quiet time. It helps me clear my mind. Having to take a break from the surrounding is good for our mental health.

6. Community:

This one is important for me. Seeing my friends on a regular basis or meeting new friends or clients are good for our being. As human beings we are designed to be communicating with other people from day to day. Going out on play dates for our little ones are important for us parents and our children. Going to a gym, joining a fitness class or going out dancing with people are some of the really good ways to be part of the community. These are my personal guidelines for healthy living that you can start incorporating on your own. I found that there are always one or two out of these guidelines that are challenging for many. Living a perfect health is tough but to practice these guidelines the best you can is the best way to do it. I hope you enjoy this article and I hope it can help with your healthy lifestyle. know what you’re asking?” You say “God, I just started dating this guy. He’s so cute! I pray that this is the one I will marry.” And God may be saying “You don’t know what you’re asking. Look at the way he disrespects his mom! Look at the way he takes things from his dad without asking! Look at the way he drinks like a fish on weekends. You don’t want to marry this guy.” Or you say “God, there’s a house for sale in Tyndall Park that I really like. I pray that the guy who owns it will sell his house to me for less than $200,000. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” And God may be saying “You don’t know what you’re asking. Twelve months from now, your company is going to lay off twenty people, and you’re going to be one of the twenty. A year from now, you’re going to be relieved that you live in a house where the mortgage payments are more manageable.” The problem is that when

we pray for certain things, we don’t always know what we’re getting ourselves into. Sometimes, we don’t know what we’re asking!” That’s the problem with the mother of Zebedee and her sons. They think that the road to greatness and glory is a simple matter of asking for the best seats! But Jesus says “The road to greatness means drinking from the same cup of suffering and sacrifice that I drink from. It means giving your life in service to others, possibly to the point of death! Can you do it?” Need Prayers? Newcomer to Canada? Let us help you! Contact Pastor Fred Sebastian (204)633-2230 & (204)9524460 for appointment. Jodi Sta. Maria is determined to get a college degree For actress Jodi Sta. Maria, education remains a top priority. Despite her thriving career in show business, Jodi still wants to acquire a college degree. The Kapamilya star attempted to finish her college education before but it did not push through because of her hectic schedule as an actress. “It has always been a dream of mine to pursue a medical degree but then a few years back it was not parang possible kasi di ba we cannot serve two masters at the same time. Parang I find it physically and mentally taxing to do both, acting and studying,

kasi that time na-try ko siya pareho,” she said. Jodi narrated that she graduated from high school when she was 28 years old. She promised herself to finish college after that but circumstances prevented her from doing so. “After finishing high school I jumped my way to college and got medical biology unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish it because of the demands of school and work and I also have responsibilities and obligations with my family so parang na set aside lang siya,” she revealed. -Kristhoff Cagape

national anthem that took my attention. You could see the pride and emotion in her by simply looking at her face. I was at the front facing her and I was not the only one who got choked up by what she did. I applaud those who have a long yearned desire to become citizens of our great country but I would also encourage them to be proud of their country of birth and by doing that, they will enrich us all. As much as citizenship courts provide meaningful moments, it is important to recognize that when a permanent resident becomes a citizen of

Canada, it does not mean that they forget about their country of birth. The reality is that Canada’s greatest strength is its diversity. New citizens and all of us for that matter should continue to care for and cherish one’s distinct heritage because that is what enables us to be who we are as a nation. We are a country rich in heritage and over the coming years, it is our diversity that will enable us in good part to be one of the greatest countries in the world. And we all call it home. I would estimate that there are over 1.5 million people in Canada that do not have Canadian citizenship. The primary reason for that high number is that there are requirements that need to be met before someone can become a citizen. Our citizenship laws have changed in recent years and we are changing them again but this time, we want to make it easier for applicants to complete the process. Based on the new law that is close to being passed, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 non-consecutive days in a span of five years, and that period of five years must occur immediately before you apply. Then applicants must have filed income tax returns for at least three years that are within or partially within those five years immediately before you apply. If both of these requirements are fulfilled and you are between the ages of 18 and 54 - then you would need to pass an English or French language test in addition to a citizenship test that will ask you basic questions about Canada. If you are seeking Canadian citizenship, I wish you the best on behalf of my staff and family. I encourage you to contact my office if you have any further questions. ippines, we believe young entrepreneurs will play a bigger role in promoting China-Philippines relations in the future, while achieving your own career and life successes. China deems people’s livelihood as the top priority of a government. Over the past 40 years, the Chinese government has lifted more than 700 million people out of poverty. Our goal is that by the year of 2020, poverty will be completely eradicated from the whole Chinese population. China does not want to control the region or the world, because China needs to focus on feeding its own huge population, which is still a daunting task. In the first quarter of 2017, China has become the No. 1 trading partner of the Philippines. In March 2017 alone, Chinese and Philippine enterprises signed 73 trade agreements worth in total of $1.739 billion in various sectors ranging from agriculture products, textile, health care, mining to logistics. Now the Philippine tropical fruit farmers and traders become the direct beneficiaries of this improved relationship. My hope is that the Philip-

pine side can maintain a relatively stable policy and create a favorable environment for foreign investors. Please offer guidance and assistance to Chinese investors and business partners who really wish to come to the Philippines. My impression of President Duterte is that he is an unprecedented President. He is totally for the country and especially for the poor. He always tells me stories of how young Filipino workers live a day: they get up at 4 a.m. and spend 2-3 hours on their way to office, and after working 8 hours, they have to spend another 2-3 hours on their way back home, and usually arrive home at 11 p.m. Some people criticize him of being friendly to China, but I think he is doing his utmost to defend the Philippine national interests. He knows what approach he should take to achieve and expand his national interests Your President will become a regional and global leader in the future. I suggest the young Filipino entrepreneurs to visit and explore more about China’s inner land which are less developed than Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen. Try to diversify your destinations, and you will find more opportunities.” Philstar

PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE and his partner Honeylet Avanceña pose with Chinese President Xi Jin Ping and his wife during a welcome dinner for 29 heads of state at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, China on May 14-15.ACE MORANDANTE/PPD

Rody: Selfies with men might make me gay MANILA, Philippines - The tough talking, crime-busting President Duterte – known for his macho image – joked on Saturday about ending up gay because of the number of male supporters who ask for selfies with him. During his meeting with the Filipino community in Hong Kong, Duterte asked who would like to join him in Beijing, the venue of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, before saying he would only allow women to join him in the trip. Duterte later poked fun at his male supporters who ask him for photo opportunities. “At saka ’yung mag-selfie, ’yung mga lalaki de-bigote pa tapos mag-selfie ipatong ’yung mukha niya sa akin (Those taking selfies, males with moustaches, when they take the ‘selfie,’ they press their face against mine),” the President said, drawing cheers from the audience. “Maging bakla ako nito pagka… I-ngud-ngod pa nila ’yung mukha nila. Eh kung lalaki ganun lang, kung saan ’yung mukha mo eh ganun, i-ganun pa. Hindi pa mag-ahit (I might

turn gay if they press their face too close to mine. Some of them did not even shave),” he added. “Kung maging bakla ang Presidente ninyo wala tayong magawa. Dahil ’yan sa selfieselfie (if your president becomes gay, we can’t do anything about that. Blame the selfie).” In a television interview in 2015, Duterte said he used to be gay but has since been “reformed.” Pointing out that he had nothing against homosexuals, he noted that two of his brothers-in-law and some of his cousins are gay. About 900 migrant workers and expatriates were present during Duterte’s meeting with the Filipino community at the Regal Airport Hotel in Hong Kong. Hundreds of OFWs were not able to enter the venue because of limited space. While he has been criticized for supposedly being sexist, Duterte could not help but joke about women during the meeting. “Hiwalay ako sa asawa ko. Kanina pa ang mata ko ang likot sige tingin-tingin (I am separated from my wife. My eyes keep on looking around),” the President said. Philstar

Why Aubrey Miles remains an

unwed mom MANILA, Philippines — Celebrities Aubrey Miles and Troy Montero have been together for over a decade, and ever since, people have been asking, “When are they going to tie the knot”? According to Aubrey, marriage, actually, never left her and Troy’s mind. “Lagi naming napag-uusapan. It’s just that kung saan, kung dito or sa States,” she said. Citizenship and whether she or Troy and their sons should stay in Manila or in America are the usual problems they face whenever they hear the word “wedding,” especially now that she has businesses to look after in Manila. Whether or not wedding bells ring soon, Aubrey feels that she, Troy, and their 16 and eight-year-old sons are officially a happy family. When asked if there is a chance for a third child, the actress quickly replied: “Oo naman! May fourth pa!” In fact, she said, they are going to try for a third one by the end of the year. As a mom she is strict, especially with her children’s sleeping time, cleanliness and treating people with politeness. She felt like she did not give her firstborn enough time, so she took a showbiz hiatus. “Sobrang busy ko, kaya gusto kong bumawi. Kaya bumawi ako sa panganay ko at pati sa second son ko.” Now, Aubrey is back in the limelight, playing a lesbian opposite Mercedes Cabral in a TV5 short film, “Everlasting,” directed by Brillante Mendoza. The movie tells the story of two girls who fell in love at the backdrop of Baguio’s Panagbenga Festival. According to Mendoza, “Everlasting” is one of the many short films TV5 commissioned him to execute; each featuring a region’s culture, local festival, and stories of common people. Aubrey told Philstar.com that “Everlasting” is her first lesbian flick, and she agreed to do it because there were no “girl-to-girl action” involved and everything that Mendoza asked for were done in good taste. “Direk Brillante asks for a different acting style. He allows you to bring your true self. Unlike in a soap opera, you have to be a little exaggerated,” Aubrey shared. Contrary to those who thought Mercedes has an attitude due to her squabble with film producer Lily Monteverde last year, Aubrey attested that Cabral is easy to work with. “She’s very natural. Kung ano s’ya off-cam, ‘yung acting n’ya on-cam, ‘yun din s’ya. Parang super kumportable ka…She’s very spontaneous,” Aubrey said of Mercedes. In the film, she learned that Baguio has a custom that loosely resembles same sex marriage. In the Philippines, however, she admitted that “same sex marriage is hard to push because we’re Catholic.” What did Troy say about Aubrey playing a lesbian? “Ooh… Exciting!” he told his girlfriend. Besides “Everlasting,” Aubrey also did a reality TV show for StarWorld, “Four Girls And A Bucket List,” together with celebrities from other countries. She also starred as Joseph Marco’s partner in the defunct ABS-CBN soap opera, “Pasion de Amor.” She confessed that as a sexy star, she is pressured to always stay in shape. Which is why even when she was pregnant, she continued to exercise. -Philstar

Sharon breaks silence on rumors of marital woes MANILA -- Veteran actress-singer Sharon Cuneta finally broke her silence on rumors that her marriage with Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan is on the rocks. Cuneta took to social media on Sunday, Mother's Day, and belied speculations that her husband is having an affair with Sen. Risa Hontiveros. "There is no truth to the rumors going around that Kiko and Sen. Risa Hontiveros are having an affair (or held hands). Some people are evil. They have nothing better to do than ruin people's lives," Cuneta said in a Facebook post. She added that if her husband has had or will ever have an affair, she would most definitely not discuss it in public. "Kung noon pa, ngayon at bukas ay mapapatunayan kong may iba pang babae sa buhay ni Kiko, ito lang ang masasabi ko: Lahat ng tinahimik ko noong nasira ang first marriage ko, dahil ang pagpapalaki ng Mommy ko sa amin ay ang huwag pag-usapan sa publiko ang dapat ay pribado, at personal," she said. The actress added that just like her father whom she described as having a "Master's Degree in the school of hard knocks," she is also street-smart. "Do not even THINK about putting one over me. I shall NEVER allow it again. So if I am indeed going through anything now, IT DOES NOT INVOLVE A THIRD PARTY," Cuneta said. Cuneta earlier this month decided to take a short break from showbiz. MONEY PROBLEMS Cuneta also discussed how she is going through some financial troubles and that she has "no one in the world" to help her. "I owe so much money (on very good investments not stupid stuff) and I have NO ONE IN THE WORLD TO HELP ME. I am probably the poorest, most cashstrapped billionaire you know (!). Etc.,

etc., etc. So much more, and you don't know half of it," she said. The actress also lamented how she has been "used" and "pushed to her limits" yet continues to work. "I am tired of being all things to all people, and I realize no one has really done or been the same for me. I think there are only a few of us who are like that," she said. "I should be retired and living off the fruits of my labor now, but instead, I work like a horse when what I should be doing is working only on what I wish to and only when I want to," she added. However, "The Voice Teens" coach said she remains grateful to God "for His unbelievable blessings and am trying my best to be a good steward of them." She also assured her fans that she is fine and that she will be coming home soon. "Thanks so much for your love, support encouraging words. Now please don't worry about me na. I am okay. I always am," she said. Pangilinan for his part, wrote a heartwarming message for his wife on Mother's Day. "Know that as you go through your own life journey I'll be here beside you & even if I may not be able to solve a number of problems you face, my shoulders'll always be here for you to lean on & my arms will always be available for big hugs should you feel the need for them. Always," he said in a tweet.-ABS-CBN News
