Malacañang has stressed President Duterte does not want to set up a revolutionary government

MANILA – Various pro-Duterte groups around the country, including in the President’s home city of Davao, are holding rallies to call on the setting up of a revolutionary government, as the country celebrates the 154th birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio. In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the govern-

ment “would not prevent citizens from expressing their support for a revolutionary government,” but he stressed the President himself has already rejected the idea. “The Chief Executive in numerous occasions articulated that he allows protests and other forms of mass action 

Social media being used to ruin democracies including Philippines

Warehouse owner tagged in P6.4-B shabu mess attempts to leave PH

MANILA- The Chinese owner of a logistics company linked to the shipment of P6.4 billion worth of “shabu” to the Philippines was intercepted by immigration officers Wednesday after he tried to leave for China. Hong Fei Logistics owner Richard Tan or Richard Chen (Chinese name: Chen Ju Long), was refused departure

by immigration officers at around 3 a.m. and was instead advised to secure an allow departure order from the justice department. “He was trying to board China Eastern Air Flight # 5046 for Shanghai Pudong,” a report, confirmed by immigration spokesperson Antonette Mangrobang, stated. Chen is the owner of the warehouse in Valenzuela City where over 600 kilos of illegal drugs were found. He is among several individuals indicted for the controversial illegal drug shipment last May.- Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News

MANILA — There is an increasing worldwide pattern of social media use to aid repressive regimes and undermine democracy, a digital diplomacy expert said Wednesday. Damien Spry, a digital diplomacy researcher and consultant based in Hong Kong, said things had greatly changed since the “bliss” spawned by the Arab Spring which made people see YouTube, Facebook and Twitter as vehicles that could strengthen civil society and the public sphere. “Maybe they weren’t wrong then, but things are different now. Social media has achieved pariah status. Like Saturn, the internet revolution is devouring its children,” Spry wrote in a commentary on the Interpreter, an online publication of the Lowy Institute which is an independent, nonpartisan think tank based in Sydney, Australia. Spry said that Freedom House’s latest Freedom on the Net report detailed declines in internet freedom for the past seven years. Other reports have also catalogued the breadth, variety and impact of social media manipulation in different countries including the Philippines through the use of paid and unpaid online agents and automated accounts (bots) that would post, share, like, quote and re-post content to influence politics. In its 2017 Freedom on the Net report, Freedom House discussed how an army of social media commentators were paid to manipulate the information landscape in the Philippines to support President Rodrigo Duterte. Freedom House said that there was an increase in reports of commentators being paid to manipulate social media information from June 2016 to May 2017. “News reports citing individuals involved said the commenters, which they characterized as part of a ‘keyboard army,’ could earn at least P500 ($10) a day operating fake social media accounts supporting President Rodrigo Duterte or attacking his detractors,” Freedom House said. The report also noted that overall internet freedom in the country slightly worsened during

the covered period. There were also technical attacks targeting media groups such as the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines from June last year to May, according to Freedom House. One of the bases of the Freedom House Report was an Oxford University study which found that the Duterte campaign spent around P10 million to hire trolls who would spread propaganda material online. The study said that Duterte’s team of 400 to 500 cyber troops posted nationalistic and pro-government comments and harassed online dissenters. According to Spry, these are just some of the main tactics used in manipulating information found on the internet. He said that manipulators would feign grassroots support (astroturfing), smear opponents and disrupt online campaigns through distractions. “The use of bots greatly amplifies impact: one human user can direct hundreds of bots to automatically generate thousands of posts and comments,” he wrote. The large amount of content and interactions, Spry said, would push it to the top of the pile and would make it more likely to appear on social media feeds of others. A common tactic in countering an anti-government hashtag campaign is by promoting alternative hashtags or by posting nonsense using the critical hashtag, he noted.

On deaf ears MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte will not listen to human rights advocates who would complain about his war on drugs. “Ito ‘yang droga, for these human rights in or out of the Philippines, hear this: Forget about it. Your complaints would just fall on deaf ears. Hindi kita pakinggan. I have promised, that was my second promise,” Duterte said before sending off Vietnamese fishermen in Sual, Pangasinan on Wednesday. Although he made no mention of it, his statement came a day after the Supreme Court’s second session of oral arguments on the war on drugs in response to petitions filed by the relatives of alleged victims of war on drugs represented separately by human rights advocacy organizations Free Legal Assistance Group and the Center for International Law. Duterte also lashed out at human rights advocates’ claim of extrajudicial killings without asking him about narco-politics in the country. “Ang masakit sa akin, human rights guys who would come here and with their counterparts also off their rockers, sabihin, ‘Ito ang listahan sa namatay, extrajudicial kills,’” he said. “But you come here, you just

take a look in the list without asking me why and we became a narco-politics, ang Philippines, about four or five years ago. That’s the problem,” he added.

Murder

Duterte also reiterated that shooting at a drug suspect who has already surrendered would be considered as murder. “Dito sa drugs, if there is an outstretched hand in surrender, you know, the only way that you can shoot and kill a person, is when your life itself or yourself is in danger of being killed,” he said. “That’s the only justification.

Otherwise, kneeling down or shooting him at the back would be murder,” he added. He made this statement after Reuters published footage of an anti-drug operation conducted on October 11 in Manila, which belied the police’s claim that they shot at the suspects for self-defense. But then again, Duterte made no reference to the Reuters report in his speech. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, meanwhile, assured the public that Duterte would not tolerate police killings when asked about Malacañang’s reaction to the Reuters report. — RSJ, GMA News

Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A California rescue chicken that was severely injured in a fight with another rooster is learning to walk again with a special wheelchair. Darcy Smith said her rescue rooster, Roo, was severely injured in a confrontation with another rooster that she was caring for during the recent California wildfires. “A few weeks ago during the fires, we took in another rooster that was evacuated, that rooster was kept in a separate cage and the chicken got intimidated by him cause he was very big so he tried to fight that rooster through the cage,” Smith told KXTV. Roo’s beak was broken in two places, his comb was bloodied and he suffered damage to his head and swelling on his brain. Smith said Roo couldn’t stand properly and had trouble eating and drinking until she procured a specially-made wheelchair from Australian company Chicken Therapy Chairs. Smith said the chair has made all the difference in Roo’s life. “He’s able to move around in it, sit upright, and he eats a ton,” Smith said. “He’s eating a lot of food, drinking a lot of water, and it’s just made all the difference.” Smith wrote on her Funky Chicken page on Facebook that Roo is improving every day and is now moving his feet without human help. “I hope he’s not in this chair for the rest of his life,” Smith said. “He’s made such a progress in a week so.” Chicken Therapy Chairs said news of Roo’s recovery has led to an influx of orders for similarly-afflicted birds.

Doctors find 263 coins, 100 nails inside man complaining of stomach pain Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Doctors in India treating a man who complained of stomach pain found 263 coins and 100 nails in his stomach. “The patient was complaining of stomach pain, so we thought of getting an endoscopy done,” said Dr. Priyank Sharma, who led the surgical team, according to the Independent. “We were shocked to discover that coins, nails and nut-bolts in his stomach. We come across such a case for the first in our career.” Doctors said the patient worked as a rickshaw driver and, after developing severe depression, would sometimes swallow coins he received from passengers. “Usually, people start eating abnormal things under certain psychological conditions. He had been eating metal for a year but did not tell anyone,” Dr. APS Geharwar, told the Times of India. “Normally, there is no problem until these particles start obstructing the intestines. In this case, the problems had started.” It’s not clear how long the patient had been ingesting metal, but doctors were able to remove the objects as soon as they started causing bleeding, therefore preventing any serious damage. “He cannot be said to be out of danger yet, but he is stable,” Geharwar said.

BSP sanctions Metrobank for P1.75-billion internal fraud business The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has ordered directors of the Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) suspended in relation to the P1.75-billion fraud committed by a Metrobank officer. “The sanctions imposed ranged from reprimand to suspension of directors and officers who failed to perform adequate oversight and/or have been complacent/remiss of their duties and responsibilities,” the central bank said on Tuesday, citing a decision by its policysetting Monetary Board. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) nabbed Ma. Victoria “Marivic” Lopez, head of Metrobank’s corporate service management, for supposedly falsifying documents on interest payments that enabled her to make as much as P1.75 billion. The Monetary Board also ordered Metrobank to earmark more than P4 billion for operational risks. “Likewise, MBTC was required to allocate approximately P4.45 billion of its capital on a consolidated basis to cover for higher operational risk,” the central bank said. “The requirement is subject to periodic review and would be lifted when the bank is determined to have put in place adequate risk control measures to address the weaknesses noted,” it emphasized. According to Metrobank, it adheres to the sanctions ordered by the BSP and that the incident is an isolated case. “The board and senior management accept accountability and command responsibility for the incident and commits to implementing the directives,”

it said in a separate regulatory filing. “After conducting a 100percent audit, the bank reiterates that no customer was affected. This is an isolated. The perpetrator acted alone and for her sole benefit. She has been apprehended and cases against her have been filed,” it added. Lopez supposedly siphoned off disbursed loans into fictitious accounts under the name of Universal Robina Corp. (URC), an incident which it has since downplayed. “Even as Metrobank continues to conduct an internal investigation on the matter, we would like to assure everyone that URC will not incur any financial loss whatsoever and that the integrity and security of URC and its active accounts at Metrobank remain unaffected by the said incident,” the company said in July. On the capital reserve requirement, Metrobank said it currently has enough in equity and assets to comply with regulatory sanctions. “With P2.0 trillion in assets and P210 billion in equity, MBTC is in a strong position to set aside P4.45 billion of capital reserve in line with the BSP’s directive,” it said. “In addition, the bank has proactively absorbed the entire amount related to this incident in the 3Q. Despite this, the growth momentum of the bank remains robust and results for the year are ahead of plan,” it added. At P1.620 trillion as of June 30, 2017, Metrobank is the second-largest bank in the country in terms of assets. — VDS, GMA News

US regulator says Silicon Valley is threat to internet WASHINGTON - A top US regulator, defending an effort to roll back so-called “net neutrality” rules, said Tuesday that large internet platforms represent the biggest threat to online freedom because they routinely block “content they don’t like.” Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai delivered remarks days after unveiling a proposal to reverse a hotly contested 2015 rule requiring broadband firms to treat all online traffic equally. Pai said internet platforms— he singled out Twitter—play a more significant role than broadband operators in determining what internet users see.

“Despite all the talk about the fear that broadband providers could decide what internet content consumers can see, recent experience shows that so-called edge providers are in fact deciding what content they see,” Pai said. “These providers routinely block or discriminate against content they don’t like.” The blunt remarks appeared to confirm a tougher atmosphere in Washington for Silicon Valley firms after years of close ties. Pai, appointed by President Donald Trump, offered an example of Twitter’s decision to block a video by a Republican candidate “because it featured

sci-tech

a pro-life message,” referring to the politician’s claim of the “sale of baby body parts.” He said Twitter “appears to have a double standard when it comes to suspending or deverifying conservative users’ accounts as opposed to those of liberal users,” Pai said. “This conduct is many things, but it isn’t fighting for an open internet.” Pai said online platforms are “secretly editing certain users’ comments” and “caving to repressive foreign governments’ demands to block certain speech” which would be considered “repugnant” in the United States. “In this way, edge providers are a much bigger actual threat to an open internet than broad-

NKorea launches ICBM in possibly its longest-range test yet SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- After 2 ½ months of relative peace, North Korea launched its most powerful weapon yet early Wednesday, claiming a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that some observers believe could put Washington and the entire eastern U.S. seaboard within range. The North said in a special televised announcement hours after the launch that it had successfully fired what it called the Hwasong-15, a new nuclear-capable ICBM that’s “significantly more” powerful than the longrange weapons it’s previously tested. Outside governments and analysts backed up the North’s claim to a jump in missile capability. A resumption of Pyongyang’s torrid testing pace in pursuit of its goal of a viable arsenal of nuclear-tipped missiles that can hit the U.S. mainland had been widely expected, but the apparent power and suddenness of the new test still jolted the Korean Peninsula and Washington. The launch at 3:17 a.m. local time and midday in the U.S. capital indicated an effort to perfect the element of surprise and to obtain maximum attention in the United States. In a government statement released through state media, North Korea said the Hwasong15, the “greatest ICBM,” could be armed with a “super-large heavy nuclear warhead” and striking the “whole mainland”

of the United States. The North said the missile, which was fired near the capital Pyongyang, reached a maximum height of 4,475 kilometers (2,780 miles) and traveled 950 kilometers (590 miles) before accurately hitting a sea target, similar to the flight data announced by South Korea’s military. The North said the missile, which was fired at the “highest” launch angle, didn’t pose a security threat to its neighbors. It said leader Kim Jong Un after the successful launch “declared with pride” that the country has achieved its goal of becoming a “rocket power.” “The development and advancement of the strategic weapon of the DPRK are to defend the sovereignty and

territorial integrity of the country from the U.S. imperialists’ nuclear blackmail policy and nuclear threat, and to ensure the peaceful life of the people, and therefore, they would not pose any threat to any country and region as long as the interests of the DPRK are not infringed upon,” said the statement, referring to North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The firing is a clear message of defiance aimed at the Trump administration, which had just restored the North to a U.S. list of terror sponsors. It also ruins nascent diplomatic efforts, raises fears of war or a pre-emptive U.S. strike and casts a deeper shadow over the security of the Winter Olympics early next year in South Korea.

band providers, especially when it comes to discrimination on the basis of viewpoint,” Pai said. The dispute over net neutrality has been the subject of several court battles, with backers arguing strong rules are needed to guard against powerful broadband firms like Comcast and AT&T acting as “gatekeepers” that can punish rivals. Pai said the debate on “net neutrality” appears driven by

Silicon Valley firms’ business interests. “These companies want to place much tougher regulations on broadband providers than they are willing to have placed upon themselves,” he said. “They might cloak their advocacy in the public interest, but the real interest of these Internet giants is in using the regulatory process to cement their dominance in the internet economy.” —Agence France-Presse

Immigration is driving force of Canada’s economy

VERY year for many years here in Manitoba, the Philippines has been our number one source country for immigrants. It is the same fact for the entire country. In 2016, some 41,791 people immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, which made the Philippines the number one source for immigrants that year.

Canada has a lot to offer the world in many different ways not to mention the potential positive standard of living for those who call Canada their home now.

For many years now, the Philippines has been in the top ten countries of immigrants to Canada and for several years, it has been number one. Closely behind it is India where 39,789 people immigrated from.

USA (8,409), Iran (6,483), France (6,348), UK & Colonies (5,812) and finally Eritrea (4,629). In total, some 296,346 people immigrated to Canada in 2016 of which 63% came from the top 10 countries with the Philippines being number one, providing Canada with 14% of all immigrants last year.

The data was known earlier this year but was released just a few weeks ago as part of the annual report to parliament on immigration. Remember in the last federal election, there was a lot of campaigning about refugees. As it turns out, 34,925 people actually came from Syria, which is a high number for that country. The rest of the top 10 immigration source countries from 4th to 10th include China (26,852), Pakistan (11,337),

In fact, our population would eventually decrease because of our natural birth rate, death rate, and the number of people who choose to leave Canada on an annual basis. The reality clearly shows that today, immigrants are preventing some provinces from depopulating, and that includes Manitoba. From a Canada-wide perspective, in 2015 our population was 35,832,500 people compared to our population in 2016 which was 36,264.600. lamoureux, 22

efore President Duterte classifies communist rebels as terrorists and wages war against them, he should make sure his security forces are prepared to apply the law against terrorism – Republic Act 9372 or the Human Security Act.

The measure makes intelligence gathering transparent, allowing the person under police surveillance that must be court-approved to challenge the court order, and requiring the identification of the police officers involved, including their full names and addresses. The New People’s Army and Abu Sayyaf would be delighted to obtain such information. Toothless law

RA 9372 was enacted way back in 2007, but lawmakers inserted into the measure several provisions ostensibly meant as safeguards against human rights abuses, which left little room even for honest mistakes on the part of counterterrorism forces and virtually defanged the law.

A further breakdown would show that 22,631 were female compared to the 19,158 that were male. I suspect the difference may be attributed to Canada’s live-in caregiver program which is dominated by females. The program has been very successful because of the quality of immigrants from the Philippines.

The law also requires the identification of police informants. And while the provision against the use of torture is in keeping with constitutional guarantees on human rights, counterterrorism forces may not want to be imprisoned for 12 to 20 years for using “threat, intimidation” or “mental, moral or psychological pressure” on a terror suspect. If RA 9372 had been applied in liberating Marawi from the clutches of Islamic State-inspired Maute terrorists, many members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines could end up behind bars for up to 20 years. The government did not even follow the procedure under RA 9372 for classifying the Mautes as terrorists. The government may have to go through that process if it intends to classify the Communist Party of the Philippines, the National Democratic Front, their armed wing the NPA and their front organizations as terrorist groups. President Duterte may want to take a different route in dealing with these groups. Or he may ask his congressional allies to review the law that government forces avoid enforcing.Philstar

No doubt that the Reds do not want peace

I

f it took me sometime to give my full support to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte during the presidential campaign of 2016, it was due to his links with the Reds. However, my good friend, Jess Dureza explained to me in January 2016 that if there is any presidential candidate that the communists held in high esteem, it was Mayor Duterte. Let me point out that in my 30-year career in journalism, I have always been against communism for obvious reason I don’t need to explain to my readers who already know me well enough. Both my mentor, the late Max Soliven, and me were staunch anti-communists. But I took the advice of Jess Dureza who later became presidential adviser on the peace process and the rest as you know is history. Mayor Duterte won the presidency hands down with an overwhelming majority. So when he formed his Cabinet, he put a lot of leftists in Cabinet positions, which alarmed many ant-communists who warned me that Pres. Duterte was forming an alliance or worse a coalition government with the Reds. But I wasn’t alarmed simply because Jess Dureza told me that Duterte could never become a communist.

Let us hope and pray that the ranks of the NPAs would dwindle and become a spent force when the LGUs and the AFP convince those armed rebels to give up their futile fight. Fast forward a year and a half in the Duterte Presidency when the peace talks with the Reds have all but collapsed! But as we all know, the communist propaganda machinery always blamed the President… and I’m not just referring to Pres. Duterte, but to all the presidents before him for their “insincerity” during the peace talks. Perhaps it is high time that Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) Chairman Jose Maria “Joma” Sison begins to realize that thanks to the social media networks, the majority of Filipinos have already realized that the communists do not really want peace with the Philippine government. Their goal and objective has always been and will always be to install a communist government in the Philippines, come hell or high water! So we are fully behind the President as he declares a full-scale war against the Reds. I have always believed in the dictum of the late President

Ramon Magsaysay who said that in fighting the communists, “You find them, you fool them, you fight them and then you finish them… then offer them the hand of peace!” This is the four “F’s” doctrine of Pres. Magsaysay who was successful in neutralizing the threat of the Hukbalahap. But while communist propaganda painted an ugly scenario about the Filipino soldier, however despite the call of Pres. Duterte to prepare for a violent war against the Reds, we learned that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) last Saturday threw its support behind the proposal for a localized peace talks with the communist rebels. The AFP statement from Chief of Staff General Ray Leonardo Guerrero declared, “The AFP supports the decision of the President to cancel talks with the CPP, NPA and NDF, and to go ‘all out’ against the NPA terrorists. The AFP also support the peace initiatives

Bobit S. Avila

SHOOTING STRAIGHT by our local elected officials including programs that seek to integrate NPAs back to the mainstream of society.” This statement proves that the Filipino soldier really wants peace despite the Filipino soldier who has been ambushed, shot, killed, mined or kidnapped by the blood thirsty NPAs! Also last week, AFP spokesman Maj. Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr. said that peace talks led by local government units (LGUs) could be the “bright spot” in the peace process. He declared, “We will continue to campaign, together with the LGUs, to pursue peace talks because even though the formal talks at the national level have ended, our LGUs and our forces will be joining to give a chance to those on the mountains to go

back to their normal lives.” As the old saying (although it is not biblical) goes, “When God shuts down the door, he opens a window!” Let us hope and pray that the ranks of the NPAs would dwindle and become a spent force when the LGUs and the AFP convince those armed rebels to give up their futile fight. Thank God that in the year 2004, when Cebu had its first female governor under then Gov. Gwen F. Garcia, she declared the province of Cebu free from insurgency and we have been insurgency free since then… even if on May 22, 2014, CPP chairman Benito Tiamzon and his wife, Wilma Tiamzon, CPP-NPA secretary general were arrested in Aloquinsan, Cebu. They were living in San Fernando 30 kilometers South of Cebu City enjoying the peace that reigned in Cebu province! While Pres. Duterte signed Proclamation No. 360 declaring the termination of peace talks with the Reds, it falls short of his earlier threat to declare the CPP/ NDF/NPA as a terrorist group, something that we feel he should have already done because even the US calls the NPAs terrorists who kill the Filipino soldier under the guise of a revolution which it is not!-Philstar

RevGov: They’re playing with fire

W

hat is this “Revolutionary Government” that keeps popping up in the news, and who are behind it? Here’s a web post on it, with the author’s name:

The unstated is what’s worrisome about this RevGov. Like, who are the political and economic oligarchs that they wish to disband?

Jarius Bondoc

“A Primer on RevPowers, by Jose Alejandrino, Oct. 2017 “1. Rev powers are the same kind of powers given to Cory Aquino after Edsa. So there is a precedent. These powers encompass both executive and legislative powers. The president can rule by executive decree which has the force of law. “2. Rev powers, or if you prefer, extraordinary or full powers, are non-transferable. They are only given to the president and are co-terminus with him. “3. Rev powers result from the abrogation of the existing Constitution. Abrogation means the suspension of institutions and existing laws unless these are re-conducted or revived by executive decree. All positions in government are automatically vacated but the president can re-appoint by executive order. “4. Rev powers automatically dissolve once a new Constitution is ratified by the people in a plebiscite. “5. The people in its exercise of its sovereign will can grant rev powers to the president with the stipulation that a new Constitution be drawn up within a given period and set a date of ratification by the people following which rev powers automatically fall into abeyance. In other words, the people can

GOTCHA grant rev powers up to a limited period. Such powers do not last forever. “6. Rev powers are extraordinary powers to clean up a corrupt political system, rebuild broken institutions, and speed up delivery of the justice system. “7. The grant of rev powers to the president is a matter of trust. They are intended to facilitate reforms by the president. How can those who trust the president and want change refuse him such powers? If they don’t trust him, obviously they are not for change because Duterte was elected on a platform of change. “#PowerToThe People; #RevPower2PRRD; #RevGov2Federalism; RevGov Para sa Masa” Last Sunday, Nov. 26, The STAR headlined, “Pro-revolutionary government rally set on Bonifacio Day.” Quoting a government security official, the report stated in part: “What is puzzling, he said, is that retired military officers identified with rightwing groups were reportedly organizing the rallies to

support a revolutionary government. The pro-administration group also includes former communist leaders Nilo Tayag and Nilo dela Cruz. Tayag was a former top official of the Communist Party of the Philippines while de la Cruz was formerly associated with the Revolutionary Proletariat Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade during the Aquino and Ramos administrations. The group, calling itself Democratic Front for Filipinism (DFF), is expected to resurrect last year’s call for President Duterte to disband the country’s so-called political and economic oligarchs that have abused the poor, by declaring a revolutionary government.” *** The unstated is what’s worrisome about this RevGov. Like, who are the political and economic oligarchs that they wish to disband? Are those the politically connected business families, like the Villars, Zamoras, Arroyos, and Marcoses? But they’re all close to and supporters of the Duterte administration. So are those their competitors who will be disbanded? RevGov supposedly is like what Cory Aquino had. That’s a scary prospect. For, after the toppling of the plundering dictator Ferdinand Marcos by People Power in 1986, Aquino used RevGov to restore the old pre-martial law oligarchs. She confiscated the Marcos cronies’

conglomerates -- in media, power, banking, construction, mining, agribusiness, food and beverages -- and gave those to her own cronies. Dozens of companies of Marcos’ brotherin-law Kokoy Romualdez, instead of being sequestered by the Presidential Commission on Good Government, ended up in the hands of Aquino’s brother and brother-in-law. (Check out on the web “The Myth of Yellow Infallibility.”) Abolishing all government positions except the Presidency, and all institutions including checks and balances, then ruling by executive decree is a prescription for chaos. That was what Marcos did in 1972-1986. At the start, criminality dropped as muggers and street toughies were arrested. In time, however, larger crimes were committed, as absolute power corrupted absolutely. Marcos and cronies took over all the industries and sucked up the nation’s wealth. Congress was padlocked, local elected officials removed, the Judiciary co-opted, the press muzzled, labor unions and student organizations suppressed. Political dissenters were jailed, abducted, or murdered. Referendums were held for some semblance of democracy, but rigged. Even music and literature, cinema and theater were restricted only to pro-Marcos propaganda. Going back to oligarchs, how will they be disbanded – by having cronies take over? That would foment economic crisis

and loss of confidence in the Philippines. First to collapse, as before, would be the stock market. The peso value would shrink. Capital will flee. No new investors would come in. Employees would be laid off. Joblessness would hit the roof. Consumer prices would soar. Farm produce would drop. A single typhoon could destroy the food supply. Food riots could erupt. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque sees no legal or national security justification for RevGov. Political opponents would always try to shake up any administration, but bringing it down is next to impossible. Besides, there is no constitutional basis for RevGov. Cory Aquino, when she ascended to Malacañang, did not swear allegiance to Marcos’ presidentfor-life Charter; in fact she repudiated it. Duterte in June 2016 swore to uphold and defend the 1987 Constitution, however; it would be a violation of his oath to abrogate it. And what if he does repeal the Constitution duly ratified by the Filipino people, since the RevGov advocates seem to treat it as a mere piece of paper anyway. Would not the people too lose respect for the fundamental and any other law? Would it not be every man to himself, with no more regard for community and nation? And what if the aged Duterte, God forbid, pass away during the RevGov? With the Vice Presidency abolished, who would take his place? Would there not be a power struggle? By then, with the people divided in hatred, would there still be some muted voices left to at least pray that God save our land?-Philstar

Kris Aquino calls out fake news saying she’ll run to beat Mocha

Kris Aquino on Friday called out a fake news item spreading on social media alleging that she would run for the Senate to “beat” Communications As-

sistant Secretary Mocha Uson, saying “politics isn’t in my brains right now.” Sharing a screencap of the fake news post, Kris noted that

she has not had any recent interview or interactions with television host and manager Boy Abunda, as the post alleged.

IGstalker: Daniel Matsunaga’s Polish girlfriend visits the PH for his birthday Karolina Pisarek shared sweet photos of her and boyfriend Daniel Matsunaga on Instagram. Daniel Matsunaga’s girlfriend Karolina Pisarek flew to the Philippines to be with him just in time for his birthday. Daniel recently opened up about his relationship with the 20-year-old model from Poland but said he wanted to keep things private

after his controversial breakup with actress Erich Gonzales early this year. However, the two have been posting their sweet photos on Instagram. “I don’t know what to say... I’m the happiest girl in the world. Thank u my sunshine for everything. I love you @dandanmatsunaga #mybaby #mybetterhalf,” she wrote in one of her posts.-BY JOAN LEARY

“I have NEVER been interviewed by Boy Abunda in recent memory, at least not in the past quarter, not in his show & not for print or any other medium. Our last communication was 2 months ago when he was turning over a few more endorsement details to my current management team,” Kris said. She also hit out at the wrong grammar of the fake news item. “Kung sino man po ang nagsulat nito- if you will choose to invent quotes from me- GALINGAN NYO NAMAN. I am a stickler for correct grammar and subject-verb agreement: it isn’t IN CASE SHE PURSUE HER CANDIDACY, I need to correct you: it is IN CASE SHE PURSUES HER CANDIDACY,” she wrote. “I know i am weird, hindi ako sa subject matter nairita, nabwisit ako na wrong grammatical quote ang na attribute sa ‘kin.” Kris did express gratitude about being compared to Mocha, admitting that she had less experience in the online realm compared to the government official. “Because in the online world, Ms. Uson is a ‘unicorn’... And I am a newbie. Yet you have elevated me by this comparison to her status.#Bongga” she wrote.

American actress Meghan

Markle to be a new kind of royal LONDON — She is an entertainment figure in her own right, and an outspoken woman comfortable talking about her background and her passions. American actress Meghan Markle will be a new type of royal when she weds Prince Harry in the spring. In some ways, Markle — a mixedrace American raised in California, and a divorcee — makes a surprising addition to Britain’s monarchy. But the institution has moved on with the times, and the romance between Markle and Harry has a decidedly unstuffy, modern feel to it. Markle, best known for her role as an ambitious paralegal in the hit U.S. legal

drama “Suits,” surprised many when she shared her feelings for Harry in a September cover story for Vanity Fair. Asked about the media frenzy surrounding their courtship, the 36-year-old said: “At the end of the day I think it’s really simple ... we’re two people who are really happy and in love.” Describing Harry as her “boyfriend,” Markle said that while she expected that she and Harry would have to “come forward” about their relationship at some point, the two were just a couple enjoying time spent with each other. “Personally, I love a great love story,” she said. It is unusual for a royal love interest

to speak so publicly — and candidly — before becoming engaged. Harry’s past reported girlfriends all shied away from the media limelight, and his sister-in-law, formerly known as Kate Middleton, stayed silent until she and Prince William gave a formal televised interview at Buckingham Palace after their engagement became public. But then, unlike some other “commoners” romantically linked to Britain’s royals, Markle is no stranger to media exposure and the world of show business. The actress’s most successful role is the feisty Rachel Zane in the TV legal show “Suits,” now in its seventh season. Her career has also included small parts on TV series including “Fringe,” ‘’CSI: Miami,” ‘’Knight Rider” and “Castle,” as well as movies including “Horrible Bosses.” Outside of acting, Markle founded a lifestyle blog called TheTig.com (which closed down in April without explanation), and has lent her celebrity status to humanitarian causes. She has campaigned for women’s equality for UN Women as an “Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership.” At a 2015 star-studded event for the U.N. women’s agency, she said: “I am

proud to be a woman and a feminist.” UN Women said in a statement late Monday that it “trusts and hopes that in her new and important public role she will continue to use her visibility and voice to support the advancement of gender equality.” She has campaigned with the United Nations on gender equality, written in Time magazine about girls’ education and the stigma surrounding menstruation, and has traveled to Rwanda as global ambassador for the charity World Vision Canada. She has described how her mother took her to the slums of Jamaica to witness poverty first-hand, saying experiences like that shaped her social consciousness and charity work. Harry and Markle held hands for their first official appearance together in September in Toronto at the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded service personnel that Harry spearheaded. Both were dressed casually in jeans, smiling and chatting as they arrived for a tennis match. Several days later, Harry was photographed kissing Markle on the cheek as he joined the actress and her mother in a luxury box to watch the event’s closing ceremony. -By Sylvia Hui/Associated Press

FEATURE ARTICLE Pictured above, for all you kids out there too young to remember, is the iconic Mitsubishi L300. Those of us who grew up in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s know this van as the quintessential family hauler that took us to many outings and family reunions. If your family didn’t own one, chances are you had a neighbor or a tito who washed his with pride on weekends and kept it safe in parking lots with an oldschool steering wheel lock. The ride might be stiff by today’s standards, but it didn’t matter to us then because sitting in the L300 always felt like we were heading off for a fun adventure. In the spirit of being nostalgic on #ThrowbackThursday, we thought we’d feature this vintage spec sheet of the beloved van. Thank you to the kind folks at Mitsubishi Motors Philippines who were kind enough to share this rare gem with us. This particular brochure was for the 2.0-liter gasoline variant. It featured amenities worth highlighting like ashtrays (a must for the titos of yesteryear) for the

driver and each row of seats, sun visors for the driver and passenger, and front-door armrests. The 12-seater also sported things like a cigar lighter, an analog quartz clock, and a parcel tray up front. Performancewise, this L300 produced 87hp and 167Nm. Amazingly, Mitsubishi claims a top speed of 160kph, though it’s doubtful that figure was achieved with the entire barangay in tow. Despite having a gross weight of over two tons, its tires only measured 14in. It was controlled by ball-and-nut type steering with no mention of power assistance-pretty normal in those days. It’s how the term ‘pawis steering’ became a thing. Another neat thing it had, which you’ll almost never

see today, is a column-mounted manual shifter. The L300 name might have lived on long after our childhoods, but it’s this generation of vans that fondly we remember the most. What’s your most cherished memory of the old-school L300? Share your nostalgic stories in the comments.

Sunshine Cruz: I know I did everything to save that marriage MANILA - Sunshine Cruz on Thursday said she tried to save her marriage with Cesar Montano before it fell apart after 13 years, but admitted that their relationship reached a dead end. The 40-year-old actress said she “looked unhealthy” before she pulled the plug in their marriage, recalling that she was “stick thin,” weighing only 110 pounds. “I know that I did everything to save the marriage. It took me 13 years to save it, but na-realize kong talagang walang pupuntahan and we are both miserable already. So I guess it’s time to move on,” she said in an interview on ANC’s “Headstart.” Cruz has separated from Montano, who she married in 2000 and had 3 children with. They parted ways in January 2013 due to the actor’s alleged affair with model Krista Miller. Cruz filed for annulment before Holy Week in 2014. She also sued Montano for allegedly raping her, saying she experienced “physical harm, obscene accusations, and grave defamation” under her “very domineering, philandering” husband. Cruz, who stars in the Kapamilya afternoon drama “Wildflower” as the mother of lead actress Maja Salvador, said she started taking care of herself after her split from Montano. “That was the time that I realized na teka, umikot ang mundo ko sa isang tao. It’s time to take care of myself more, and that was the time na nag-exercise na ako, nagpakulay na ako ng buhok,” she said. After she and her boyfriend, businessman Macky Mathay, marked their first anniversary as a couple in September, Cruz gave advice to women who are struggling to find love. “If you want your partner or someone to love you, I think you should start from yourself. Kasi daw walang time para mag-exercise, no, that’s not an excuse. What is 3 times a week, less than an hour a day? Sabi ko, mahalin mo muna ang sarili mo. If matanggap at mahalin mo ang sarili mo, then it will follow naman, meron nang magmamahal sa ‘yo, definitely,” she said.-ABS-CBN News

Iñigo Pascual admits he and Sofia Andres were in a relationship

On Tonight with Boy Abunda, Inigo Pascual and Maris Racal reiterated that they’re not dating but “exclusively talking.” Maris giggled and explained, “Kasi hindi po talaga kami nagde-date. Kasi wala po kaming oras.” Inigo said, “We’re not dating kasi if we’re dating we would have to be spending more time with each other. And I wouldn’t want to be in a position where we put ourselves… pero parang I’m not able to give the time and effort that she deserves.” Asked when they think they will reach the “in a relationship” status, Maris answered, “Very sacred po sa amin ang ‘in a relationship’. Kasi kapag in a relationship, dapat both of you fulfilled niyo na lahat ng dreams niyo and nagawa niyo na lahat ng gusto niyong gawin as a single.” Inigo was asked pointblank if he and Sofia Andres were once in a relationship. Inigo paused but eventually said, “Yes, yes.” Asked how he feels that Maris is being blamed by some people for the breakup of Diego Loyzaga and Sofia Andres, Inigo said, “Hearing that I feel bad that people would think that Maris would do such thing. Para sa akin we’re all friends. Diego is my friend, Sofia is my friend. Sofia is your (looking at Maris) friend as well. Something that we kind of just laugh about kasi kami mismo magkakaibigan kami. And the people outside are thinking of things na hindi naman totoo.” Maris clarified that the rumors are not true. “No po, Tito Boy. To be honest, nahu-hurt ako kasi naja-judge yung friendship ng tao. Kasi kami talaga ni Diego, sobrang friends kami. And never kaming nagkaroon ng relationship to begin with… Sobrang close ko po sa mommy niya and sa tita kaya, siguro naja-judge ng friends na meron kaming relationship.” Maris added that she and Sofia are friends. -BY CRISTINA MALONZO

Margaret Gardiner took home the first Miss Universe crown for South Africa in 1978. It’s a no-brainer that the newest queen definitely deserves it because she has proven everyone that she’s more than just a pretty face. Demi has the wisdom, eloquence, elegance, and confidence every Miss Universe should possess which she was able to develop due to her past experiences. But who Demi really is when not under the limelight and behind the camera? Here are the 17 things we found out about her through our research: 1. Demi’s had been very vocal about her determination to win the crown. She really wanted it, declaring in a TV interview, “I really I’m not going to Miss Universe to make friends or just for the experience. Benefits of Prehabilitation

What is Prehabilitation (Prehab)?

The term most people are familiar with is rehab or rehabilitation. Rehab takes place after an injury or surgical procedure has already occurred. Prehab, on the other hand, is done prior to a surgical procedure. Prehab involves preparing the body for the upcoming trauma of surgery by incorporating the same principles of rehab.

What is involved in prehab? Prehab follows the same principles as rehab. It involves restoring the joint’s full range of motion, strength training of the specific joint as well as the surrounding area, balance training, and improving overall posture and body alignment.

When is prehab recommended? Prehab is an excellent way to prepare the body for surgery. This is done by putting your body in a better state prior to the trauma of surgery by strengthening around the injury as well as improving recovery after the surgery. Strengthening around the injury, particularly joints, will actually allow for a greater joint space to allow movement with ease. When the muscles around a joint become weakened the joint space becomes smaller increasing the possibility for pain and decreasing the range of motion. This can be shown in the following picture of a knee joint

with a normal, healthy joint space versus a closed joint space.

How does prehab help with recovery? By creating positive habits, strengthening around the injury site and improving neural stimulation to the area, the body is able to recover more quickly. This is due to creating a state of muscle memory in the tissues allowing them to progress more quickly after the surgery compared to someone who has never done the specific exercises needed prior. As a certified Athletic Therapist and someone who has also gone through numerous surgeries, I have both seen and experienced the differenceprehabilitation can make in recovery. With the common trend of active living and exercise awareness it is about time we start taking an active role in our own recovery. Surgery will always be a large stress on our systems, so if there is a way to make things easier on our bodies, especially as we get older, why wouldn’t we? Yes, prehabilitation is a commitment and it involves some hard work, BUT I can say with confidence through my experiences and my clients that it has made a world of a difference in helping you feel more like yourself so much faster. Common surgeries that benefit from prehabilitation include but are not limited to hip replacements,

knee replacements, ligament reconstructions and shoulder repairs. Surgery shouldn’t prevent you from being your best self or doing what you love to do. Let an Athletic Therapist help you in your recovery journey by preparing you and getting you in the best position possible for a faster recovery. Miguel Cotto: The epitome of what every boxer should strive to be There was never a fight in which Miguel Cotto entered the ring unprepared. There was never one in which Cotto didn’t fight as hard as he possibly could. There wasn’t an opponent he could have fought that he did not. The Puerto Rican’s fabulous career ends on Saturday in what he says will be his final fight in a super welterweight title bout at Madison Square Garden televised by HBO against Sadam Ali, and it’s sad because you don’t get the likes of Cotto very often. Cotto was beloved, not because of a warm and fuzzy personality or a quick wit or even a charitable streak which drew people to him. No, this was a guy who was beloved because for 17 years as a pro, he was the dictionary definition of what a fighter ought to be. He wasn’t the slickest boxer of his era, but he beat several very slick ones. He wasn’t the most powerful, either, but he doled out significant punishment. But there were few in his era who had the all-around game that Cotto did. He could punch and take a punch. He could box. He was savvy in the ring and could adjust strategy on the fly, if necessary, and had the courage to face the harshest fire. Cotto enters Saturday’s bout with a 41-5 record and 33 knockouts. His losses say much about the fighter he has been: A loss by TKO in the 11th to Antonio Margarito on July 26, 2008; a loss by TKO in the 12th to Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 14, 2009; a unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather on May 5, 2012; a unanimous decision loss to Austin Trout on Dec. 1, 2012; and a unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez on Nov. 21, 2015. Those came against several of the greatest fighters of alltime, and certainly against the best fighters of his era. But Cotto points to a lesser known bout as the one that put him on the path to greatness. “I think the fight with [Ricardo] Torres in Atlantic City is the one that put Miguel Cotto on the map,” Cotto said of the Sept. 24, 2005, bout that he won by seventh-round knockout. “It was the way the fight was happening that night and the way I woke up from the canvas, and it was the fight that put Miguel Cotto on the map.” Torres entered the fight with a 28-0 record and 26 knockouts, but he was something of an unknown commodity at the world-class level. Prior to the bout with Cotto, he’d fought 27

of his 28 fights at home in his native Colombia against largely unknown opposition. Torres fought 12 winless opponents in his 28 fights prior to facing Cotto and his opponents had a combined record of 100-158-6, so there were legitimate questions about whether his power was real or a product of facing overmatched opposition. The answer came early. Cotto was hurt badly in Round 1, and was knocked down in Round 2 for the first time in his career. He was badly hurt in rounds five, six and seven, as well. If you want to know the type of fighter Cotto has been throughout his career, watch a replay of that bout. He floored Torres four times, standing up in the face of a hellacious beating and coming out on top. He did much the same three years later in the most controversial bout of his career and one of the most controversial in boxing history. Margarito and Cotto put on a savage show in their July 26, 2008, bout in Las Vegas before referee Kenny Bayless stopped it in the 11th as Margarito was overwhelming C o t t o . - K evin Iole

Kevin Durant:

Lonzo Ball ‘still figuring it out’ as a rookie OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant have come to the defense of struggling Los Angeles Lakers rookie point guard Lonzo Ball. “He’s a rookie,” Curry said of Ball after practice Tuesday. “He’s going through ups and downs like every rookie has. Whether you’re highly touted or not, it’s all a learning experience and you’re trying to find your way and be comfortable. ... “I’ve always said he’s a great talent. I think he loves to play basketball, so he’ll be able to fight through all that and have a great career. I hope you didn’t judge me off my first 20 games in the league.” Curry (hand contusion) and Durant (ankle sprain) are listed as questionable when the Golden State Warriors meet Ball and the newlook Lakers for the first time this season on Wednesday at Staples Center.? Ball, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, is averaging 8.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists. However, because he has struggled mightily with his shooting -- 30.9 percent from the field, 24.5 percent from 3-point range -- he’s been heavily criticized. “Lonzo is just playing like a rookie, as far as learning the game, finding the ins and outs of the game,” Durant said. “It’s slowing down for him. Picking and choosing his spots. He’s still figuring it out. “He’s 19? That’s what any 19year-old would go through in the pros. It’s just a matter of him being in L.A., where the eyes and scrutiny are on him. He’s playing like he should play as far as learning the game and adjusting on the fly.” Much has been made of Ball’s elongated shooting motion. He brings the ball from his left hip before releasing, often allowing defenders to recover for blocks or to contest his shots. “He’s not the first person [that] the peanut gallery kind of wants to chime in and tell people how to play the game,” Curry said. “At the end of the day, he’s made shots shooting like that before. I’m pretty sure he’ll figure out what that means in the NBA game, but that’s for him to decide.” Ball’s boisterous dad, LaVar, said earlier in the year that his son was better than Curry. The two-time MVP was asked whether those comments will serve as added motivation for Wednesday’s game.

PETS are furry family members and so with the holiday season upon us, people intend to include their pets in the festivities. Follow these tips to keep your pet healthy and safe during the holiday season. 1) Be aware of which holiday plants are toxic and keep them away from your pets. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and poinsettia are all poisonous if ingested and while symptoms for each plant can range from serious (kidney failure) to mild (temporary diarrhea), keep these plants out of reach to avoid unnecessary suffering. Or opt for artificial plants as a jolly alternative. 2) Christmas trees look like an inviting playground to many pets, especially cats. Make sure your tree is anchored securely so it doesn’t tip. Avoid decorations like ribbons or tinsel as many cats will eat these items and become seriously ill. Glass decorations or wires from lights should also be kept out of paws’ reach. 3) Avoid leaving any burning candles unattended or within the swing radius of a happy dog’s tail. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if candles are accessible to paws or tails. 4) Be careful with the treats! While some treats are safe to be shared between people and pets, avoid giving your pet sweets, cooked bones and fatty foods. Chocolate can cause pets to be-

come sick, and bakers’ chocolate is particularly toxic. Don’t leave chocolates or treats wrapped up under the tree, many pets will consider them fair game. Cooked bones and fatty foods from holiday dinners can cause illnesses in pets that will ruin the holidays with a sick pet needing a costly veterinary bill. 5) People often enjoy a special cocktail or eggnog with a twist during holiday gatherings. However do not leave alcoholic beverages within reach of pets. Alcohol consumption in pets can cause weakness or more serious illness requiring medical attention. 6) During holiday gatherings, make sure to have a safe quiet spot or room your pet can retreat to if they feel overwhelmed. Some pets prefer to be kept entirely separate from festivities, finding so many visitors and so much noise overwhelming. Provide these sensitive pets a pleasant chew treat or new toy to keep them occupied in a quiet room behind a closed door. Explain your pet’s need for peaceful solitude to your guests. The holidays are a time for getting together with friends and family, enjoying delicious food and even better company. Ensure your pet takes part in the safest way possible for even more great holiday memories. (Jessica Thompson, PawsFor Thought Boutique For Pets, 1051 Main St, Winnipeg, ph#204-421-7297)

as long as public safety and convenience are not compromised,” Roque said. “Police will observe maximum tolerance and exercise highest restraint.” Roque earlier said there was no “factual or legal” basis to set up a revolutionary government in the Philippines which shall entail the scrapping of the Constitution and the declaration of government posts as vacant. While the President has already dismissed the idea of setting up a revolutionary government, in recent days he said he wants an overhaul of the Constitution that has strong anti-corruption provisions. To allay fears he would use the charter change to extend his stay in office, he assured the public he will step down once the revision of his desired version of the charter is fulfilled. Cause-oriented group Tindig Pilipinas, which counts prominent political opposition figures as its members, is not convinced that Duterte has indeed abandoned the idea of setting up a revolutionary government. “Let us not be fooled by President Duterte and his administration’s capacity to hem and haw or be deceived by their seeming reluctance to declare a revolutionary government,” Tindig Pilipinas said in a statement. “Their plans subvert our Constitution, upend our laws and rend our social fabric are serious and real. The threat is imminent.” The group added that the “promise of a golden age brought by revolutionary government is a myth.” “Our country was once fooled by President Marcos and his promise of a New Society. In the end, we became a beggar state and the doormat of Asia. That is why we say Never Again.” “If Duterte has been unable to wield the tremendous powers

That means our population grew in 2016 by 432,100.

Take away the number of immigrants that came to Canada that year and our population would have only grown by 135,754 people. Relatively speaking Canada’s population is aging and our annual natural birth rate is getting closer to our annual natural death rate. Every year, thousands of people also emigrate out of Canada. In order for us to compete and grow into the future which includes improving our standard of living, Canada’s population needs to grow. Not that long ago I wrote about Manitoba’s pork industry and how immigration was really behind its growth as an industry. Today, that industry and the spin off benefits have dramatically improved our province’s growth and all Manitobans have benefited in many ways. This brought back hope to communities like Neepawa. Canada has a lot to offer the world in many different ways not to mention the potential positive standard of living for those who call Canada their home now. As a growing nation that needs people, we need immigration and on that front, those 41,791 people that immigrated from the Philippines in 2016 reinforced the important role that the Philippines plays in the future of Canada. of the Presidency to bring about the reforms he has promised under a democracy, he is at best incompetent, at worse, traitorous or both. He cannot be given more powers when he has proven himself capable only of using those powers to benefit himself and his friends.”-Dharel Placido, ABS-CBN News

The Kapamilya Christmas Carols. The project will bring the Filipino Christmas spirit to Kapamilyas around the world. “I came to realize that in countries like the U.S., you get more trick-or-treaters than you get Christmas carolers,” said Head of Global Events Ricky Resurreccion, a migrant who has lived away from the Philip-

pines for many years. He adds: “Mas maraming nananakot, kaysa sa nangangarolling.” (There are more people trying to scare you, than those bringing good cheer through caroling). Anecdotal to some but true for most, there is a sentimental longing for celebrating Christmas the way it is done in the homeland, especially given that the Philippines is famous for having the world’s longest Christmas season. “Namamasko Po!” is a digital concert series that brings the viewer 12 days of happy, hopeful, and comforting sounds of a true “Paskong Pinoy” (Filipino Christmas) to celebrate the holiday the Filipino way while they’re thousands of miles away from home. Various Kapamilya artists like Erik Santos, Jed Madela, Jona, Jason Dy, Klarisse, Nyoy Volante, Yeng Constantino, and more will brighten the holidays for Filipinos in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and the Philippines. Remitly Senior Marketing Manager Katrina Tioseco shares

that many Remitly customers who moved away from the Philippines claim that “Iba pa rin ang Pasko sa Pinas,” (Christmas in the Philippines is incomparable). This project seeks to bring the Filipino Christmas spirit to them that they have missed so much. Tioseco explains that “Namamasko Po!” hopes to fill in that gap. “By supporting the creation of the first-ever digital Christmas caroling experience, we hope to spread more of the holiday cheer and deliver some of that uniquely Pinoy Christmas spirit wherever they are in the world.” Launching December 1, “Namamasko Po!” will feature a Kapamilya artist each day for twelve days to sing and greet viewers live, with pre-selected Christmas songs. ‘Birdshot’ star wins Best Actress at ASEAN Film Awards in Vietnam To quote Liza Diño, chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, “Birdshot” once again soared high in the international scene. This, after Mary Joy Apostol, lead actress of the Mikhail Red-directed feature, took home the top female acting honor at the first ASEAN Film Awards in Vietnam on Wednesday. Singapore’s “A Yellow Bird” won Best Picture, while its lead star, Sivakumar Palakrishnan, bagged Best Male Actor.

Russia seeks long-term partnership but not military alliance with PHL — envoy Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Khovaev on Thursday clarified that Russia is not planning on establishing a military alliance with the Philippines but hopes to maintain a long-term partnership. Under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, Russia has extended assistance to the Philippines in terms of weaponry to fight terrorism and developing its capacity for nuclear energy. Last month, Russia donated 5,000 Kalashnikov rifles, 5,000 steel helmets, one million rounds of ammunition, and 20 trucks to the Armed Forces. In a News to Go interview, Khovaev said the fight against terrorism is both countries’ “common fight.” “My country suffered a lot

from terrorism, and we fully understand that no country is able to efficiently cope with this threat on its own. We need to combine our efforts,” the ambassador said. “So we are open for any cooperation with your country in the military and the military technical fields. We are ready to supply sophisticated arms and weapons, staff training, and we are ready also for joint military exercises and we are also ready to transfer military technology to help your country build your own defense industry.” However, he said, forming close military alliances with any Southeast Asian nation is not in line with Russia’s interest to maintain equal security in the region. Khovaev explained that

there are reasons for this policy. “The security must be equal and comprehensive for all Asia-Pacific countries, not only for the selected few. Any attempt to build a close military alliance means an attempt to provide the alliance members with the security to a considerable extent at the expense of other countries,” he said.

Energy development Khovaev also confirmed that the Russian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Philippines to help with the assessment of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), noting that nuclear energy can help the country in more industries than one.

“We are ready to cooperate with the country in the forms which are acceptable for you in full compliance with your own national energy development program,” he said. The ambassador also addressed the lack of a proper nuclear waste disposal facility in the Philippines, saying Russia is equipped with the “most sophisticated” facilities and is

ready for discussions. When asked about Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign against illegal drugs and the human rights violation allegations surrounding it, Khovaev said Russia is “ready to combine efforts” with Filipino partners against illegal drug trafficking but clarified that it will “not meddle” with state affairs. — Margaret Claire Layug/ BM, GMA News
