DPWH unveils P107-B traffic decongestion plan MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has unveiled an ambitious P107-billion traffic decongestion program that aims to address the worsening traffic problem in the country, which is estimated to cost the economy P2.4 billion a day. In a forum last week, Public Works Secretary Mark Villar said one project under the program is the Luzon Spine Expressway Network that will connect 18 major expressways throughout the country and decongest the 24-kilometer EDSA. “As of today, our existing expressway network is 385 kilometers long. By the end of this administration, we will have almost doubled this expressway network to 655 kilometers,” Villar said. Villar said when the ambitious project is finished, travel time to various areas of the country would be significantly reduced. “Today, to go from Metro Manila to La Union will take you almost seven hours. When this is finished it will be three hours and 10 minutes,” he said. Travel from North (La Union) to South (Camarines Sur) will likewise be reduced to eight hours from nineteen at present once the Luzon Spine is completed, Villar added. As part of the project, DPWH has been implementing projects on various expressways around the country. For instance, it is now working on the alignment of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway to the Rosario, La Union exit. “Once this is finished, you can go from Manila to Baguio in less than three hours and after we’ve done the Rosario exit, we will continue the TPLEX to La Union and we will cross to Ilocos Sur,” Villar said during the forum organized by World Trade Center Manila. The Rosario exit will be finished by next year, he said. Another project is the Plaridel Bypass Road that will ease traffic in the province of Bulacan.Philstar

MANILA, Philippines - Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr., the man tagged in Kuratong Baleleng-led crimes, smuggling and drug trafficking, met a violent death before dawn yesterday as police conducted a series of raids on the family’s homes. Aside from the mayor, his wife Susan, brother Octavio Jr. and 12 others were also killed, including some members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team, in what police said was a shootout in San Roque Lawis, Ozamiz City, according to Senior Supt. Jaysen de Guzman, Misamis Occidental provincial police director. Chief Superintendent Timoteo Pacleb, Northern Mindanao police regional director, said the mayor’s daughter, Ozamiz Vice Mayor Nova Princess Echavez, and son Reynaldo Jr. were arrested during the series of operations that began at around 2:30 a.m. yesterday. Police said about P1.4 million in cash, half a kilo of suspected shabu and firearms were recovered from the vice mayor’s home. The lawyer of the Parojinogs disputed police claims that the raiders were met with a volley of gunfire from the mayor’s security personnel when they were about to implement the search warrants for the alleged presence of illegal drugs and unlicensed firearms. Last year, Parojinog was named by President Duterte as among the local chief execu-

He has admitted that his daughter was the girlfriend of convict Herbert Colanggo, a known drug lord at the New Bilibid Prison, but denied links to illegal drugs. But Reynaldo Sr. denied Colanggo was his son-in-law because Nova Princess was just granted an annulment of her marriage to former basketball player Edgar Echavez and was not married to Colanggo. According to Pacleb, Nova Princess is facing illegal possession of firearms and violation of the anti-drugs law. Pacleb said a police officer, whose identity has yet to be established, was wounded

North Korea says 2nd ICBM test puts ‘entire’ US in range

PYONGYANG, North Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Saturday the second flight test of an intercontinental ballistic missile demonstrated his country can hit the U.S. mainland, hours after the launch left analysts concluding that a wide swath of the United States, including Los Angeles and Chicago, is now in range of North Korean weapons. The Korean Central News Agency said that Kim expressed “great satisfaction” after the Hwasong-14 missile reached a maximum height of 3,725 kilometers (2,314 miles) and traveled 998 kilometers (620 miles) before accurately landing in waters off Japan. The agency said that the test was aimed at confirming the maximum range and other technical aspects of the missile it says was capable of delivering a “large-sized, heavy nuclear warhead.”

Analysts had estimated that the North’s first ICBM on July 4 could have reached Alaska, and said that the latest missile appeared to extend that range significantly.

Reports reaching Camp Crame showed joint teams from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 10 together with the Misamis Occidental provincial police and Ozamiz City police implemented six search warrants for Reynaldo Sr., his daughter, son Reynaldo Jr. and another brother and also Misamis Occidental board member Ricardo for charges of illegal drugs and loose firearms. Meanwhile, the CBCP said that its investigation would run parallel to the Philippine National Police’s human-trafficking investigation into the priest. Furthermore, the CBCP’s probe would continue, and Lagarejos’s suspension would remain in force, whether or not legal charges are filed against the priest. And neither was the Church’s investigation dependent on the priest’s cooperation. All they need are witness testimonies. Life term eyed for coddling tax evaders

MANILA, Philippines - Officials and personnel of the graft-ridden Bureau of Internal Revenue should be penalized with life imprisonment if they are found guilty of allowing big taxpayers to evade in exchange for under the table transactions, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said. “Aside from amendments to the National Internal Revenue Code, if possible we could slap them with reclusion perpetua as maximum penalty for these cases,” Alvarez told BIR commissioner Cesar Dulay and other officials at a recent hearing. Alvarez, along with practically all congressmen who attended the hearing of the House ways and means committee last week, couldn’t believe that a multinational company ended up paying a minuscule amount instead of billions of pesos in taxes due. Dulay’s subordinates, deputy commissioner Teresita Angeles and assistant commissioner Marissa Cabreros, admitted before the committee led by Quirino Rep. Dakila Cua that they allowed Del Monte Philippines Inc. (DMPI) to pay only P65

Alvarez was bewildered at how Dulay could have feigned innocence at such large amount to be lost in government coffers only on the basis that the case didn’t have to pass through his office. “What kind of a commissioner are you? There is a compromise and yet you don’t know it?” Alvarez asked Dulay. “We are having difficulty in passing the tax reform bill and yet you are wasting the people’s money?” he remarked. Alvarez then suggested that BIR internal procedures be modified, at the very least, to let cases of huge taxpayers – those running in billions – to let these pass through the BIR commissioner’s office. Dulay and the other BIR officials admitted before the House of Representatives last week that Del Monte Philippines Inc. was assessed a total of P8.7 billion for 2011 to 2013, but was allowed to pay a measly P65 million.-Delon Porcalla/Philstar

PH makes headway to become Asean’s car, motorcycle hub

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is making headway in its goal to be a vehicle manufacturing hub in the region, posting stellar growth in both car and motorcycle production in Southeast Asia in the first half of the year. Latest data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation showed the Philippines recorded the second fastest expansion in terms of motor vehicle production in the region with 73,597 units manufactured in the first six months, up 33.6 percent from 55,077 units in the same period last year. Only Myanmar, which is a relatively smaller market, outpaced the growth of the local vehicle industry productionwise with a growth of 242.5 percent to 1,589 units, while other major car producers like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam posted a year-onyear decline. Volume-wise, however, Thailand remains the region’s leader with 950,966 units produced in the first semester. The start of the government’s Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy program with Mitsubishi and Toyota as approved participants is expected

to beef up local vehicle production in the coming years. Production of motorcycles and scooters in the country, meanwhile, recorded the fastest growth of 22.5 percent to 608,284 units during the January to June period. Production of motorcycles in Thailand rose 15 percent while Malaysia saw a 5.1 percent uptick. Overall, vehicle production

in the region dipped 2.1 percent to 1.98 million units in the first half, while production of motorcycles and scooters jumped 16.1 percent to 1.85 million units. In terms of sales, the Philippines continued to enjoy the second fastest growth in the region for motor vehicles while posting the fastest acceleration for motorcycles during the six-month period. -By Richmond Mercurio

‘Many more to come’ miz Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog, and her brother were arrested during the raid, and will be brought to Camp Crame within the day. READ: Ozamiz mayor, 14 others killed in police raid Chief Superintendent Roel Obusan, director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, said the fact that these members of the family and several other armed men remain alive proves that the police did not mean to kill when they op-

erated over the weekend. “Kaya nga may nahuli tayo, kasi we are not meant to kill; yung mga lumalaban lang... It erases the doubt of the lawyer na they are meant to be liquidated kasi if that’s really our intention, napatay na sana lahat; si Madam Nova, wala na rin sana,” he said. “We really intend to bring them to justice and for them to answer justice alive. Kaya lang ang nangyayari kung minsan, may laban kasi sila yung nag-

maintain ng private army and we were fired upon before entering the premises,” he added. Dela Rosa said he also wanted the Parajinog patriarch alive “to answer the charges,” but when he resisted arrest, “I want my men alive more than him.” “Lagi kong sinasabi yan: After the smoke is clear, it should be the good man standing and the bad man lying on the pavement,” he said. Obusan, whose men also

launched the operation which killed Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. inside a prison cell, believes drug personalities should just yield to arresting officers instead of resisting. “I hope those are things na maiiwasan sa susunod: wag na tayong maglabanan, sumurrender na lang, tapusin na yung mga ginagawang mali at magheed sa request or sa pakiusap ng ating presidente,” he said.Trishia Billones, ABS-CBN News

Apple axes iPod nano and shuffle Touch became the last iPod standing on Thursday as Apple removed nano and shuffle stand-alone digital music players from its lineup. Late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs introduced the devices some 12 years ago with his legendary showmanship flare, and the small, easy to operate players helped the company revolutionize how music was sold. Apple confirmed to AFP

that it is no longer selling nano and shuffle, and the MP3 players vanished from the Apple website. “Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano,” the company said in an email. odd news Massive shark jumps onto boat off Long Island, gets stuck July 28 (UPI) -- Passengers on a charter boat off the coast of New York state captured video of a mako shark that jumped onto the boat and became stuck. The video, filmed off Long Island on July 6, shows the mako stuck in the rails at the front of Capt. Don Law’s Outlaw Fishing Charters boat. Law and his crew are eventually able to free the shark from its situation and cut some rope wrapped around its tail so it can plunge back into the water. Law said the blood in the shark’s mouth resulted from the predator’s attempts to bite through a metal rail.

Cyclist chased by huge grizzly bear on Canadian highway July 28 (UPI) -- A couple traveling on a British Columbia highway captured photos of a cyclist being chased down the road by an enormous grizzly bear. Cassie Beyer of Idaho said she and her husband, Donald Poster, were driving down the scenic stretch of road July 14 and taking photos of the wilderness when they spotted the man on a bicycle being chased by a grizzly bear at the side of the road. “My husband slammed on the brakes and I didn’t know what he was doing until I saw this. I already had my camera out,” Beyer told KREM-TV. Beyer said Poster started honking the horn in an effort to scare away the bear. A second vehicle, a pickup truck, arrived on the scene and also honked at the bear. The driver of the pickup truck, Robbie Flemming, said his honking eventually got the cyclist’s attention. “Finally he looked over at me and I said, ‘You’ve got a grizzly bear about 25 feet behind you.’ He looked back and went, ‘Oh!’ and started to pound on the pedals,” Flemming told Global News. Beyer said the bear lost interest in the cyclists and turned its attention to the honking vehicles for long enough to allow the man on the bicycle to escape the scene.

Kim Chiu confirms that Xian Lim got jealous of Gerald Anderson Much to the public’s surprise, Kim Chiu uncomfortably confessed that her rumored boyfriend Xian Lim gets jealous of her ongoing tandem with Gerald Anderson. In a brief interview with ABS-CBN News prior to leaving Manila for the ASAP in Toronto show, Kim honestly revealed that her ongoing working relationship with her exboyfriend of almost four years somehow affected her relationship with Xian. “Tawanan na lang natin [iyong rumors]. Alam naman niya [Lim] na work lang iyon. Pero siyempre hindi maiiwasan,” she shared. But Kim was quick to emphasize, “Basta, work naman iyon eh.”

For what it’s worth, Kim underscored that the actor-performer would always have a special place in her heart. Kim, likewise, shared that Xian is now okay with the fact that she and Gerald are working on their daytime soap Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin. Xian already belied that persistent rumor during his recent appearance on Tonight With Boy Abunda. “I get it if people will have that conclusion,” Xian explained. “I mean I can’t say that it’s completely okay but it’s part of it. It’s easy kasi to get confused with the characters we portray in the teleseryes and the movies and in personal life.” Despite rumors of their split, Kim even came to Xian’s second concert at The Theater at Solaire, where the latter asked her for a big hug.

TFC earns back-to-back wins for global campaigns at 15th Quill Awards QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES --- ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC), home of the most widely distributed premium and on demand channel and producer of Filipino content outside the Philippines, earned two nods from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines on July 5 at the Marriott Hotel in Manila for campaigns that address its global audience -- its overseas voting campaign #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH and virtual get-together for these Filipinos and their families, Kapamilya Reunion. With the registration for the overseas voting in full swing, the government’s campaign gets a boost as TFC’s #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH born out of a partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs Overseas Voting Secretariat (DFA OVS) and Commission on Elections Office for Overseas Voting (COMELEC OFOV) gets another nod from the PR industry by getting an Excellence award and vying for the over-all top five awards under the Communication Management category from this year’s Philippine Quill awards. #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH earned the judges’ nod for Communication Management for Corporate Social Responsibility and for inspiring Filipinos to capture the Philippines in photo at its current state and to tell other global Filipinos how they

According to ABS-CBN Global Head of Corporate Affairs & PR Nerissa Fernandez: “The PR industry’s recognition of ABSCBN TFC’s #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH campaign affirms the value of our joint efforts with our government and community partners in reaching out to Filipinos worldwide and connecting them to the homeland through the most powerful means of involvement: the exercise of their right of suffrage. Through the power of media, this allowed them to have a voice in the political conversa-

tion and in building the future of our homeland”. The campaign was launched in 2015 first to help the government agencies increase the number of registrants and sustained in 2016 to turn them into voters. The campaign harnessed the power of social media to encourage Filipinos overseas to use the hashtag across all their social media accounts with the help of key influencers such as news personalities Atom Araullo, Julius Babao, Jing Castaneda, and Cathy Yang; entertainment reporters Gretchen Fulido, Tina Marasigan, Barbie Muhlach and

Folklorama: Time to celebrate our diversity

t is that time of year again starting on August 6 when thousands of volunteers will put on one of the largest cultural diversity shows in North America, right here in Winnipeg. Folklorama first started in 1970 and I am happy to see that this event is once again bringing us all together for the 47th annual Folklorama celebration. This year, there are over 40 pavilions that will showcase the culture and heritage of many countries from around the world, all taking place here in our city. Folklorama is a two-week celebration and it is the world’s largest and longest-running multicultural festival. We are given the chance to witness and, in a very personal way, experience many countries’ cultures through traditional performances, cultural displays and ethnic cuisine. Each year I am amazed by the countless hours the performers put in to rehearse and stage their performances. But let us not forget about the pavilion volunteers that we do

not see onstage. When I go to the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion this year, the first people I will see will be the parking volunteers and they will welcome me with a smile. Once I park my car, I

Straight up (www.mpkevin.ca) will go through the back door and see a VIP table where I will be greeted by someone like Lerma Cruz or maybe Manny Reyes. From there I will be taken around the pavilion. When I pass the bar where you can pick up a San Miguel Beer, I will likely see Ernie Garcia, someone I once volunteered with. I will go to the cultural display where I will see Ate Clarita behind the table selling all sorts of Filipino memorabilia. I remember one year when Justin

From crime to politics

S

INCE the 1980s, Ozamiz City’s Parojinog clan has been linked to crime. Patriarch Octavio Parojinog Sr. originally headed an anti-communist militia group formed by the military. Called the Kuratong Baleleng, the vigilante group shifted to criminal activities after the government tried to disband the team. From protection rackets to extortion and illegal gambling, the gang expanded to bank and armored van robberies. The main group and smaller units began operating in other parts of the country including Metro Manila. Octavio Parojinog Sr. was shot dead by a police team in 1990 reportedly when he tried to resist arrest. Police said his sons Renato and Reynaldo took over the gang, with members of the arresting team that killed their father being murdered one by one. Early yesterday, in raids by the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Ozamiz, Reynaldo, his wife Susan and brother Octavio Jr. were shot dead together with 12 of their aides and bodyguards. The mayor’s daughter Nova was arrested. Reynaldo was the mayor of Ozamiz; his daughter is the vice mayor. Octavio Jr. was a provincial board member. How did persons linked by police to one of the nation’s most notorious crime rings become local government officials? The nation has laws against all the crimes attributed to the Kuratong Baleleng gang. There are laws against money laundering, which could have been used to trace dirty money. Laws against tax evasion and unexplained wealth could have been applied against the Parojinogs especially when they became government officials. Yet the clan managed to thrive, and even develop an image as Robin Hoods of Ozamiz. That Robin Hood image, according to previous reports, stemmed from the clan’s sharing of ill-gotten wealth with Ozamiz residents especially during elections. In this the clan is not unique. Lawmakers, with an eye to self-preservation, have stubbornly resisted proposals to strictly regulate campaign finance. This has made election campaigns in this country the perfect vehicles for laundering dirty money. This has also paved the way for the rise of narco politicians. Reynaldo Parojinog was on President Duterte’s list of narco politicians, like the late Albuera mayor Rolando Espinosa and Saudi Ampatuan town mayor Samsudin Dimaukom. As the President himself has pointed out, he can’t kill everyone on the list. Unless reforms are implemented, there will be others like the Parojinogs who will exploit the weaknesses of the law, using dirty money to build a power base and profit even more from crime.Philstar

Witnessing the turnover were US PACOM Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. Bryan Fenton and Philippine Air Force Commanding General Lt. Gen. Edgar Fallorina, who expressed gratitude for the new addition to the country’s air assets as these will provide the military with important flexibility in detecting various threats to the country especially with our porous shores. Secretary Lorenzana himself admitted being elated at what the aircraft can do to support the ground, air and naval operations of the AFP, as well as humanitarian and disaster response efforts. The turnover of the two new aircraft (valued at P1.67 billion) was an important event as it not only underscored significant progress in the AFP’s modernization program, but also highlighted the continuing alliance between the US and the Philippines. In fact, a

More military hardware from the United States are on the way, among them the two ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicles sometime this month. retired US Admiral whom I have known for years texted me that the military alliance between the Philippines and the United States has never been better that it was at this time. President Duterte who was expected to drop by the event before going to the Visayas to visit wounded soldiers had to cancel because of the inclement weather. President Rody told Secretary Lorenzana he will check out the spy planes on his way back. But I’m sure the president will be pleased with the new aircraft that are equipped with advanced sensors, cameras and communications equipment that will significantly enhance the ability of our troops to pinpoint the location of terrorist groups operating in Mindanao. More military hardware from the United States are on the way, among them the two ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicles sometime this month. The ScanEagle UAVs built by Boeing’s Insitu group are miniature drones with multiple optic and sensor capabilities. They are equipped with electrooptical and infrared cameras that can track stationary and moving targets. We’re told they are extremely helpful to

SEAL operations as they have the capability to monitor enemy concentrations, can detect movement of vehicles and people, and identify buildings and terrain features. Earlier this year, Washington also donated hand-held Raven drones for the use of Philippine Marines operating against the Abu Sayyaf militants in Jolo. The morale within the Air Force – from the top brass down to junior officers and even the enlisted personnel – is extremely high with the new planes that will be operated by the 300th Air Intelligence and Security Group based out of Edwin Andrews Air Base in Zamboanga. The 300 AISG is the AFP’s lead unit for air intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance operations. During our meeting with Secretary Cayetano, he outlined our country’s new independent foreign policy, and I couldn’t agree more with a strategy that should work well with our relationships with other countries which will be based on mutually beneficial cooperation, equality and mutual respect. The Philippines may be small compared to others, but as far as our independence and sovereignty is concerned,

BABE’S EYE VIEW we have the same standing as other nations – even giant ones like China and the United States. And the way I see it, therein lies the significance in the president’s SONA remarks about the Balangiga Bells. Many are saying we should get back those bells, while some are even offering to make replicas and replace them so we can get back the originals – but I think there is more to it than that. The interpretation offered is that President Duterte mentioned the Balangiga Bells to remind everyone about the history of atrocities attached to those bells. Each nation has its own past, its distinct problems at the present, and respective policies in resolving such problems – which other nations should respect. Many are expecting that relations between the Philippines and the United States will experience new levels when US President Donald Trump comes to Manila this November for the

ASEAN summit. This will probably signal the renewed relations between our two nations since both leaders hit it off well and displayed good chemistry when they spoke over the phone last April. Mutuality is definitely a key word to good relations, and this will be our guiding light when we go to Washington, D.C. I’m confident that this new assignment I am about to embark on as Philippine Ambassador to the US will be meaningful, not to mention challenging. It will be an honor to be the country’s representative to Washington, D.C. and I am deeply grateful to the president for giving me this opportunity to serve the country. There comes a point in one’s life when one needs to contribute something to the country, so perhaps this is one of them. I thank my friends, classmates and some senators as well as congressmen from all sides of the political spectrum including Congressman Rudy Fariñas for their encouragement. Secretary Cesar Purisima was one of the first to congratulate me, and so did Nene Araneta of the Araneta Group. President-Mayor Erap called me and so did Congresswoman Gloria Arroyo, while FVR has actually been advising me from day one to take the post. My deep appreciation for all the encouragement and best wishes. As often said, we will do our best, and God will do the rest. Philstar

Door remains open for GRP-NDFP talks

P

resident Duterte was more combative during his second state-of-thenation address last Monday than was during his first SONA. Venting on his prime advocacy, the fight against illegal drugs, and against a wide range of perceived enemies and critics, he came out raising both fists. Last year, in contrast, he extended a hand of friendship and cooperation with the Left and announced the resumption of the GRP-NDFP peace talks. This time around he fulminated against the CPP-NPA for its sustained counteroffensive actions against government security forces after the declaration of martial law in Mindanao, including an attack on members of the Presidential Security Group at a checkpoint in Arakan, North Cotabato four days before the SONA. Reacting, Duterte cancelled back-channel talks with the NDFP, which he had ordered to be pursued just two days before, towards continuing the fifth round of formal negotiations stalled since May. As for the Leftist protesters – who were loudly opposing martial law and calling him to account for his unfulfilled promises in their “People’s SONA,” led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan – the President remarked they were better off going home. (He probably noticed the huge protesting crowd from the helicopter he rode on before landing on the Batasan

Satur C. Ocampo

AT GROUND LEVEL Pambansa grounds.) Yet, soon after his speech, the President hurriedly motored to the rally site, a short distance from the House of Representatives where he had addressed the joint session of the 17th Congress. He walked fast under an early-evening drizzle and went up the makeshift stage to speak to the protesters. It was a brief speech. Brushing aside some heckling from the crowd and chanting of “Never again to martial law!”, “Continue the peace talks!” Duterte riposted: “Let us respect each other!” Acknowledging that several issues needed to be resolved, he asked for more time. On continuing the peace talks, he reiterated his grievance that the NPA allegedly tried to ambush him in North Cotabato. (“If you ambush me, I’ll turn my back on you,” he said.) For other issues against his or his government’s actions or inactions, Duterte offered:

That’s one compelling reason to continue the peace talks. Get on with the back channeling. “Let’s talk about them.” The three progressive members of his Cabinet (NAPC Secretary Liza M. Maza, DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, and DAR Secretary Rafael Mariano), he suggested, could serve as conduits for relaying to him urgent matters that may require dialogue. (Earlier, the President had given permission for the three Cabinet members to go to the rally and speak before the protesters.) Given the tense atmosphere, his going straight to the protesters and speaking candidly was an unprecedented surprise move on the President’s part. And it was more dramatic and more politically meaningful than his inviting the march-rally leaders to a dialogue in Malacanang after last year’s SONA, and before that, a similar invitation-dialogue after his inauguration. On those two occasions, the Bayan-led progressive mass organizations rallied in support of the new President because of his having initiated the resumption of the peace talks, his promises to institute reforms and to adopt an independent foreign policy. Short notice that he would come to face the protesters was relayed to the rally leaders by

the Presidential Security Group shortly after Duterte began his speech. A welcoming group was formed to engage him in a brief talk before he addressed the crowd. When he arrived, however, his close-in security ignored the welcoming group altogether and briskly guided the President up the stage. They were unable to talk to him after he finished. Nonetheless, the political significance of that presidential initiative cannot be underestimated. For one, it signifies that President Duterte continues to value maintaining an open line for interaction with the Left, both with the political leadership of the underground armed revolutionary movement and with the leaders of the open-legal democratic mass movement. After blustering that he no longer wanted to talk to the Left, his peace adviser, Jesus G. Dureza, clarified that the cancellation of the back-channel talks was just temporary. Likewise, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella explained that the peace talks have not been cancelled but simply put “on hold.” Both men claim an abiding trust in Duterte’s “deep passion” for attaining a just and

lasting peace for the people, the avowed end-goal of the peace talks. For now, the door remains open for the continuation of the GRP-NDFP peace negotiations. Duterte hasn’t shown any significant change in attitude and ways of relating to the leaders of the open Left despite some tension in the tone of their recent conversations. This was palpable during Duterte’s dialogue, a few days before the SONA, with the Bayan leaders, the Makabayan bloc progressive partylist representatives, workers’ and peasants’ leaders, mass leaders from Davao City and representatives of the Lumad in Mindanao. Although fiery speeches highlighted the “People’s Sona,” Duterte’s surprise appearance and frank talk may have deterred the protesters from burning his war-mongering effigy. Also, Duterte’s advice to the protesters to avail of the mediation of the three progressive Cabinet members suggests his trust and confidence in them and satisfaction with their performance in office. In fact, he authorized Maza and Mariano to act as consultants to the GRP panel during the last two rounds of formal negotiations on social and economic reforms. Those rounds have made significant advances particularly on agrarian reform. That’s one compelling reason to continue the peace talks. Get on with the back channeling. Philstar

This Ford F-150

police vehicle is straight out of an action movie

A

merican police cars, and the pursuit they’re involved in, tend to fascinate those of us on the other side of the world who are more likely to see a police officer giving chase on a kalesa than in a V8 sedan complete with bull bars. So, w3hat’s better than a regular American police car? That’s right: this. The Ford F-150 Police Responder. Ford says it’s the first truck officially rated for police pursuit duty, and it looks quite serious. First off, it’s not a V8. Instead, the new F-150 prefers EcoBoost V6 power, connected to a 10-speed (10!) gearbox and all-wheel drive. Thanks to 375hp and 637Nm, the top speed is 161kph, but under the beefy body, components have been reinforced to cope with the rigors of law enforcement off the beaten track. The steel frame and ‘military-grade a-loo-min-um’ body are standard (giving the F-150 the most generous cabin space of any pursuit vehicle, says Ford) but the truck’s got upgraded brakes, a tougher front anti-roll bar, and all-terrain tires. Anti-

stab plates have been added to the front seats, and the rear quarters are all vinyl, for, ahem, easy cleaning. Ford’s also fitted a 240amp alternator to support the extra electrical equipment carried by police forces (laser guns, most likely), underbody protection for huge jumps in complete safety, and an engine idle hour meter to reveal just how long the motor’s been left turning over on a stakeout. It’s possible we may have watched too many cop movies but we’re pretty sure that’s what all this is for. Yassi takes the

high road

Robin Padilla is now a grandfather

Robin Padilla’s daughter Queenie Padilla with his ex-wife Liezl Sicangco, recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl. “I wanted a boy but when you came into the world I realized how wrong I was. I wouldn’t want anything in the world but you, my princess, my everything, my life. I love you so much... You make me happy cry every day. It pains me to hear you cry, it gives me joy to see you smile. Alhamdullillah. Thank you, Allah,” she wrote online as her reflection after giving birth. She and her Pakistani national husband Usama Mir initially named their first born “Manir Tada” but soon changed it because “it is not a name.” “In laws are looking for another ‘first’ name as it has been confirmed by a scholar that Manir Tada is not a name, you can call her by her middle name [chosen by me] I’m so thankful to the people I’m close with who has informed me that it’s not a name Alhamdullillah,” she wrote then added that the baby is now named Mikailah Mir. Queenie added that she opted not to show the baby Mikailah’s face due to privacy. “As much as I want to share her to the world, I have made a decision not to post her face on social media. My daughter’s privacy and protection means the world to me. Please keep my daughter in your Dua’s.” Queenie quit showbiz in 2012 and said she has found peace in her religion. Robin is expecting another grandchild this year from his daughter Kylie Padilla. JOAN LEARY

MANILA, Philippines - In the age of social media, you measure how far a celebrity has arrived by his/her number of followers, how frequent bashers try to destroy him/her, and just how destructive their posts are. New Silka brand ambassador Yassi Pressman has 2.4 million followers on Instagram, 1.25 million on Twitter, and more bashers than she can handle. When she reads bashers’ comments about people and things she loves — her family, acting and dancing — Yassi becomes the girl next door who breaks down and cries her heart out over forces she can’t control. “But I think I treat my family well,” she protests. She can always correct the bashers, of course. But the problem is, they will find reason to hit her again. “When they say something negative and you correct it, they’ll say something else. They won’t stop. You can’t please everybody,” observes Yassi. For her, the worst part is, bashers can hound you from the moment you wake up, leave home a n d c a l l it a day.

“I hope bashers realize everyone has feelings, that everyone must think before they click,” Yassi sighs. But since she knows locking horns with them is fighting windmills, Yassi decided to do the next best thing: Ignore bashers and focus on doing her best. At least this one she can control. “Be strong. Don’t compare yourself with others. Be the best person you can be,” she says, speaking more to herself than to audience that came to meet her that rainy afternoon. Yassi knows torturing yourself with bashers’ comments is the fastest route to destruction. Instead of growing, you’re paralyzed. Instead of blooming, you’re terrified. Yassi’s shield is her support system — friends and family who give her life more color and meaning. One of the persons she always runs to is her dad. To her, dear dad can do no wrong. Will he allow her to go daring when the chance to do so comes along? That’s the least of Yassi’s worries. “My dad’s liberated. He’s more western in his thinking,” replies Yassi. Besides, shifting from wholesome to daring hasn’t occurred to her. Yassi has many other things on her plate. She enjoys playing wife to Coco Martin’s character Cardo on ABSCBN’s Ang Probinsyano. Yassi is single, and has yet to have a child, but she loves the challenge of acting like someone she’s not on screen. “I love my character (Alyana) so much,” reveals Yassi. It helps a lot that she’s learning a lot from the veterans — Susan Roces, Joel Torre and Coco himself. Yassi is also looking forward to working with Sam Milby for the first time in the romantic comedy film Ang Pambansang Third Wheel. She’s working seven days a week but Yassi doesn’t mind. Work on the TV or movie set makes her day. “I hope I’ll still be in this industry three to five years from now. I can work behind the scene if I have to. I don’t mind starting from the bottom as production assistant.” This attitude will take Yassi to places she’s happiest in — where bashers are ignored, and those who believe in her call the shots.-Maridol Rañoa-Bismark/ Philstar

MANILA, Philippines — American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars has been reportedly working with fellow artist of Filipino descent, Phil Tayag of hip-hop dance group Jabbawockeez, to bring his criticallyacclaimed “24k Magic in the Air” world tour in Manila. Mars’ homecoming concert, slated on May 3, 2018 at the Mall of Asia Arena, has been announced Thursday morning on Twitter. Tickets will start to go on sale on September 7. On November last year, Mars announced his world tour across Europe and North America. Due to its success, with over a million tickets said to be sold in a single day and with reported revenues of US$ 52.7 million and counting, the singer decided to extend the tour to Asia. In May 2017, Mars reportedly became the first artist since Beyonce to have four straight sold out concerts at the Spark Arena in New Zealand. Mars previously gave a sample of his dynamic live show on “Saturday Night Live,” where he performed some of his hits from his latest album, “24K Magic,” his third studio album released

Due to his original name, however, he was typecast as a Latino artist and was rejected a lot because of his race. To avoid stereotypes, he adopted his childhood nickname, Bruno, and has been using Mars as a surname. He, however, has been proud of his Filipino ancestry, even endorsing a Filipino clothing brand and since Filipinos are family-oriented, he has been working with his brother and sisters for various projects. LOOK: Solenn brings cheer to soldiers wounded in Marawi clash A visit to a hospital that serves wounded soldiers from war-torn Marawi City has altered Solenn Heussaff’s perspective in life. The actress-model shared on her blog her visit to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Health Service Command, which houses, she said, heroes “who literally break themselves for you and me.” Photos showed her, along with her celebrity friends like Tim Yap, talking with soldiers who were left bedridden due to injuries, and handing out highfives and handshakes. “I can’t help but think that if only more of us had the character of these heroes, the world would be a much better place,” Heussaff mused. “If only we were less selfish, less hateful, and more grateful and more persevering.”

She also confessed that she was particularly touched by one solider, who lost his ability to see. The blind solider, she narrated, kept telling her that he was glad that she came to visit them. “I couldn’t understand how he could still be so grateful, while I was feeling so much anger for him deep inside,” wrote Heussaff. She said that she decided to write about her experience because the stories of these soldiers needed to be told. “They have many stories to talk about— sad ones, but also happy ones. Some even have miracles to tell, while others simply want an opportunity to share a joke,” she said. As of writing, the death toll from the long-drawn Marawi conflict stands at 630, 114 of which were state troops.news. abs-cbn

Lea Salonga reveals the reason why Aga Muhlach never became her boyfriend

1

The Broadway star’s tandem with Aga Muhlach made a lot of the 90s moviegoers gush. Aga Muhlach and Lea Salonga might’ve parted ways in showbiz but their fans still get kilig especially when they read Aga’s letter for Lea saying she is “the one that got away.” During the latest episode of the morning show Magandang Buhay, the Broadway star admitted that she was also speechless with Aga’s letter because she had no idea about the “very sweet, very well written, and very heartfelt” love letter. “I was in shock. We asked him kasi to write a message. I was going to different people para dito sa librong ito. Of course, how do we not ask him to make a contribution? And then all of a sudden, we got the submission from Aga,” she shared. “[My editor and I] were both in shock. Kaming pareho, we were looking at his letter. We were like, ‘Oh my God.’ The only reaction was ‘Wow!’ Yun lang. Frozen in my chair,” she added. Lea then shared that they never became a real-life couple despite having projects together because the timing was not right. However, she said that they’re good friends and that’s way better. “Bad timing talaga because when we were shooting ‘Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal,’ ako iyong may boyfriend sa totoong buhay. Noong ‘Sana Maulit Muli,’ during the first part, umiiyak-iyak siya because he had just broken up with a girlfriend. And then naghiwalay muna kami because he had another movie to make, and I had a musical. So we started doing ‘Sana Maulit Muli’ again. Nagka-girlfriend ulit. Ako naman ang single. So talagang hindi kami meant in real life,” she said. Lea and Aga worked together in the movies “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” (1992) and “Sana Maulit Muli” (1995).-ABSCBN News

Brock Lesnar to Jon Jones:

‘Be careful what you wish for, young man’ If there were grumblings about a possible Jon Jones vs. Brock Lesnar showdown before, the idea for the super fight became a full-blown roar after Jones called out the former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE Universal champion at UFC 214. “Brock Lesnar, if you want to know what it feels like to get ass kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, meet me in Octagon,” Jones said shortly after scoring a third-round TKO over rival Daniel Cormier. The call-out sent social media spiraling and speculating about a possible showdown between two of the biggest stars in the sport. Whether Jones knew it or not, Lesnar was at home watching UFC 214 and heard exactly what the UFC light heavyweight champion had to say. “Be careful what you wish for, young man,” Lesnar said, according to the Associated Press. That simple response has essentially drawn a line in the sand and dared Jones to cross it.

Obviously, there are many factors that will have to be overcome before a Jones-Lesnar showdown can be cemented. But it’s clear that these two are interested in squaring off against one another. And that’s good news for WME-IMG, who is looking for a big money fight as Conor McGregor continues to be away from the sport in preparation for his August 26th boxing match against Floyd Mayweather. With Jones successfully returning from his suspension and reclaiming the UFC light heavyweight title he was stripped of, he’ll likely reclaim his place as the top pound for pound fighter in the world. He’s toyed with the idea of moving up to heavyweight in the past and now he may have found the perfect dance partner for his debut. Lesnar, who saw his unanimous decision victory over Mark Hunt at UFC 200 turned to a no-contest after Lesnar failed a drug test, was hit with a one-year suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission. He will be eligible to return once he completes his suspension and re-enters the USADA testing pool. Jones and Lesnar have had a bit of a back and forth in the media over the past week. Jones challenged Lesnar and Lesnar responded by telling the AP “anytime, anywhere” when Jones suggested that Lesnar wouldn’t be interested in a fight with him. But it certainly looks like things are trending in the right direction for the super fight.

PBA: Chot Reyes sets ultimatum for Calvin Abueva

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes on Sunday warned that Calvin Abueva is in danger of losing his spot in the national team’s roster after the Alaska forward missed practice for the fourth time. Abueva was included in Gilas’ 12-man line-up for the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon that starts on August 15, but has yet to show up for practice. “The Beast” also missed Alaska’s game against Star in the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup last Friday. “If he doesn’t come by tomorrow, we’re going to be forced to drop him,” Reyes said following Gilas Pilipinas’ practice at Upper Deck in Pasig. “We have no other recourse.” Reyes revealed that he has yet to hear from Abueva, despite repeated efforts to contact the player through his mother team. “Wala pa ring balita eh. Kino-contact through Alaska, through their team manager, pero wala. There’s no news,” he said. READ: Gilas workhorse Cruz claims first-ever Sportsmanship Award Abueva’s absence is another blow to the national team, which is already short on preparation ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup. John LloydSarah movie earns P100 million in 4 days MANILA – Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz’s “Finally Found Someone” is off to a blazing start as it crossed the P100million mark just after four days since its premiere, Star Cinema announced on Saturday night. The film began its run on Wednesday, raking in P20 million despite the bad weather due to a tropical storm that affected parts of the country including Metro Manila. In a previous interview, Geronimo and Cruz said they are very grateful that a lot of people still came out to watch their movie despite the rains. “Siyempre po we feel blessed. Kahit na bumabagyo, actually worried po ako kasi ang lakas nga ng ulan so mas safety nila ‘yung iisipin mo, pero may mga pumupunta pa rin talaga, so thankful kami sa inyo. Maraming, maraming salamat po,” Geronimo said. Cruz, on the other hand, is happy with the feedback they are receiving so far. “Iyon lagi ang mystery kapag ipapalabas ang pelikula. Hindi mo talaga alam kung ano ang magiging epekto. Ako, never ako naging confident sa magiging reception ng tao. I can be confident doon sa quality, doon sa ginawa namin na produkto. Pero as to kung paano tatanggapin, iyon ang laging mystery para sa akin,” he said. Directed by Theodore Boborol, “Finally Found Some-

one” tells the story of Aprilyn (Geronimo), who found herself heartbroken after being left at the altar. She later on met Cruz’s character, Raffy, who would “help her find her happy ending.” “Finally Found Someone” is the fourth film of Geronimo and Cruz. Other films featuring the tandem include “It Takes a Man and a Woman” (2013), “You Changed My Life” (2009), and “A Very Special Love” (2008), all of which are box office hits.news.abs-cbn.com

Viewers, coaches pick four “The Voice Teens” Grand Finalists The top eight artists of “The Voice Teens” are fighting tooth and nail this weekend as they fight for the chance to represent their respective teams in the highly anticipated grand finals next week. In this weekend’s live semifinals, the show will combine the percentages of the public votes, as well as the coaches’ scores for each artist in order to determine the top-scoring artist from each team. The road for the coaches has not been easy after having to make tough decisions every

week to whittle down their teams. This proved to be difficult for some of them, and even led to coach Sharon shedding tears during the battles and coach Sarah crying during the knockouts before picking a winning artist. Coach Lea, on the other hand, had to defend coach Sarah after the popstar royalty earned criticisms online for her team’s top three artists. Netizens also have differing opinions on which artist coach Bamboo should have picked to remain in the competition during the first live shows.

Business Council of Manitoba launches Youth CEO initiative:

Pilot project to provide Indigenous and new Canadian youth with training and work experience The Business Council of Manitoba launched the Youth CEO - Creative Employment Opportunities initiative with a goal of providing Indigenous and new Canadian youth with opportunities to play a greater role in our economy. The kickoff event was held on the site of Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre Summer Kids Camp at the Old Exhibition Arena in Winnipeg’s North End. “Manitoba has one of the youngest and fastest growing populations including Indigenous and new Canadians. For this demographic and our province to do well, we need to give them opportunities. This new initiative does just that - it will provide exposure to the different opportunities that exist within our business community,” said Steve Kroft, CEO of Conviron. Business Council of Manitoba will deliver this pilot project through partnerships with the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre and Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development. Eighteen youth participants coming

from a wide variety of backgrounds will receive training and work experience with thirteen Business Council companies. “Our members are thrilled about being involved in Youth CEO. They want to make a difference by sharing the services and resources of their companies to help give youth that critical first job, provide a second chance at employment and an opportunity to build a career right here in Manitoba,” said Kroft. “As a single mom raising my seventeenmonth-old daughter I am excited for the opportunity to gain work experience, learn about the careers available, and to show what we can offer to these companies,” said Youth CEO participant Kelsey Lands. “I am thankful for the chance to give my daughter a better future.” “By seeing the potential of our Indigenous and new Canadian youth and ensuring they have the skills they need to succeed, we can build the next generation of our economy,” said Mark Chipman, Business Council Chair. “This is one of the wisest investments we can make.”

Hon. Wab Kinew of Fort Rouge aspires to be New Democratic Leader of Manitoba

By Gemma D. Dalayoan

have that. We should all have health care that helps us be the best version of ourselves. I will rebuild our health care system after Pallister’s cuts, by listening to people on the front lines, and by helping people stay healthy at home, so that all Manitoba families can be well. Whether it’s at the beginning of life, or the end. When you help people stay healthy at home, they don’t need to go to the hospital as often. Thus, I anticipate that the Health Care Industry will be the main issue that many irate voters are going to raise especially the closing emergency rooms, laying off ER doctors, nurses, and other employees connected with the health care, and shuttering EMS stations in rural communities. When asked about Immigration policies especially the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), he comments: “I will focus on family reunification and lower the $500 processing fee.” In regards to education, he stated that at present he’s the education critic. He advocates for a smaller classes so that the teachers and students will have more time on one to one basis. He also states, I believe also in the importance of putting skills earlier in education and prepare youth for jobs, especially in technology. For the K-12, the current government is putting less and less money; not building facilities. For postsecondary education. I would like to prepare youths for jobs and accessibility to affordable education not only in the cities but also in rural areas. Right now the government is raising tuitions and taking away the tax credits

for those who have graduated. I also would like to endeavour in creating and training people to find new jobs as some might be displaced due to the advent of technology. Queried about his ideas on multiculturalism, he states that he would communicate to minorities of some opportunities for government grants, accessing government agencies, and job opportunities. He believes that there’s “strength in diversity”. Wab wants his sons to grow up in a progressive place that recognizes the value of all people.

He will continue to build on the NDP values of equality, prosperity, inclusion and reconciliation right here in Manitoba. Furthermore, Wab will work to make Manitoba a more progressive and forward-looking province while promoting equality and reconciliation here at home. With all his vision, strong educational background, abilities, and talents in all fields of endeavour, Wab is a “breath of fresh air in the Manitoban political arena”. It would not be a surprise if he becomes the next premier of Manitoba.

HONOURABLE Wab Kinew, MLA of Fort Rouge, might be new in politics but his popularity, especially to young voters is overwhelming. He has very fresh ideas or vision on how he would serve all Manitobans if elected as the new New Democratic Party (NDP) leader against veteran politician, the former MLA Steve Asthon at a party convention to be held on September 16, 2017. The last leadership debate held at the University of Winnipeg on July 27,2016 had Larry Kusch of the Winnipeg Free Press saying that “judging from the applause, it appeared that the crowd was mainly in Kinew’s corner.” He also wrote that Wab Kinew has the backing of theManitoba Federation of Labour (MFL with 100,000 members. Below is his profile Originally from Onigaming First Nation, in Northwestern Ontario near Kenora, Wab went to school and established his career here in Winnipeg. He lives in the city with his wife, Lisa, a medical doctor and two sons. He is an award-winning journalist, hip hop artist, broadcaster, musician, literary reviewer, and bestselling author, producer, media personality and university administrator. Wab has brought national and international attention to issues like violence against women and reconciliation with Indigenous people. Wab holds a BA in Economics and is working on a Master’s degree in Indigenous Governance from the University of Winnipeg (UW). Before entering politics, he was the UW’s Associate Vice-President

for Indigenous Relation. Questioned if he has an edge over veteran opponent, he declares: “The next NDP has to look different than the last NDP government. We need to return to our roots, listen to Manitobans again and bring a strong team that will build a new progressive movement in this province.” He further states that success is hard to find without hardwork, patience, diligence, and good interpersonal relations to people of all backgrounds. He realizes that the Filipino community is a large and vibrant community, and he wants to attend to many events as much as possible to listen to the Filipino community’s concerns. When asked what he anticipates to be the number one concern he would be able to hear, he amusingly answered, “the health industry.” He declares: Health care is an act of love. We all agree the best way to improve care and reduce wait times is to move upstream invest in primary prevention, mental health, and better drug coverage. My family has seen health care from both sides - as patients, and providers. My wife, Lisa is a medical doctor.Six years ago, my dad found out he had cancer in his pancreas, and it was spreading. Our family network supported, cared, and looked after him. When you help people stay healthy at home, they don’t need to go to the hospital as often. When my father left this world, he left with dignity. He was proud to the end. When it came, he knew he was surrounded by people who loved him. We should all

Trudeau visited the pavilion. Ate presented him a red, white and blue jacket with the eight yellow rays (Filipino flag). As I tour the pavilion, I will see other fantastic volunteers like former honorary Consul Edda Pangilinan in the kitchen, Connie de Villa at the front collecting tickets, and Goldie Garcia running around making sure the performers are all where they need to be. The many volunteers that make the pavilion possible also include security, stage support, people who support the performers, food servers both for the volunteers and visitors, cleaners, guides, ambassadors and still so many others. During Folklorama, I will visit a number of pavilions. I believe that when it comes to the number of people behind the scenes and even on the stage, the Pearl of the Orient pavilion is second to none. I encourage you to check it out for yourself. This great event attracts thousands of tourists from beyond Manitoba’s borders, not to mention the hundreds

of thousands of pavilion visits that Winnipeggers will make. All of this is good for the city’s economy. Folklorama is also very helpful to the youth as they connect with different cultures and learn more about the people that have migrated to this wonderful nation. This cultural display that runs for two weeks can have a positive and long term impact on the youth because they tend to stay off the streets and become more connected to their roots. This celebration of diversity gives us an insight on where the many citizens of this city came from and they all call Winnipeg their home. As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, I believe that there is no other better event that highlights our greatest strength - our diversity – than Folklorama. This annual event is possible because of the dedicated volunteers whose energies, time and commitment make the difference. I salute all of the volunteers and performers. Your dedication and tireless efforts are so much appreciated.
