Vitangcol links Mar, Abaya to MRT anomalies

MANILA (March 31) – Former Metro Rail Transit (MRT) general manager Al Vitangcol III yesterday accused ruling Liberal Party members led by acting president, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, of cornering all the projects for maintenance and other big-budgeted contracts of the MRT. Vitangcol said he got fed up with the “lies” of administration presidential candidate Manuel Roxas II at the last presidential debate. Vitangcol told the Kapihan sa Manila Bay breakfast forum that PH Trams, the controversial maintenance subcontractor and partner in the joint venture that won a six-month contract to maintain the MRT, was chaired by Marlo de la Cruz, a member of the LP Pangasinan chapter and common friend of Roxas and Abaya. Vitangcol also bared the broker for Chinese firm CNR Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. that bagged the P3.8-billion contract to supply 43 new trains for the MRT, Eugene Rapanut, was a member of the LP’s Ilocos Sur chapter. He said Rapanut was also broker for the Korean-led Busan Transportation Corp., Edison Construction & Development Corp.-Tramat Mercantile-TMI Corp.-Castan Corp. consortium that won and was awarded the P3.8-billion three-year maintenance contract for the MRT. The contract included the general overhaul of 43 trains and total replacement of the signaling system of the MRT last January. The one who brought in Busan is a member of the Liberal Party, according to Vitangcol.

“I have a certification here of the Liberal Party,” he said, showing the purported certification issued by the LP Ilocos Sur chapter chairman Francisco Ranches dated June 8, 2010. “He brokered the Dalian and Busan deals. He was the representative during the biddings,” Vitangcol said. While Rapanut was not a signatory in the contracts, Vitangcol said Rapanut’s involvement could be checked in the attendance lists. De la Cruz, on the other hand, was an LP Pangasinan chapter member. De la Cruz, he said, is chairman of PH Trams, the authorized representative of the APT GlobalGlobal EPCom joint venture that also won a maintenance contract for the MRT, and was an officer of the Global EPCom that is now the MRT station maintenance contractor. De la Cruz, according to Vitangcol, had been vocal about his closeness to Roxas and his friendship with Abaya. Abaya had admitted in a TV interview with host Solita Monsod that he had met De la Cruz in 2010 and, finding him to be a good person, became his friend. Vitangcol said that before getting appointed to the MRT general manager position, he had served in the Public Private Partnership Center. He said that former PPP Center director Phil Torio, his professor at UP, had tapped him to join the center. When Torio resigned to migrate to Canada, he was urged to apply for the MRT top post, which Torio heard was then vacant. -Rainier Allan Ronda

Duterte, Cayetano to return farmers’ coco levy funds MANILA – Presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte and his runningmate Alan Peter Cayetano yesterday vowed to distribute the coco levy funds to farmers if elected. The duo listened to the demands of small coconut farmers during their “Ronda Serye” yesterday afternoon in Catanauan, Quezon. Duterte said the undistributed multibillion-peso fund should be given back to the farmers during his first 100 days in office. Cayetano said he would not allow the “cycle of neglect” to continue under their administration. Before the Ronda Serye ended, Duterte and Cayetano signed a three-point manifesto entitled “Panata para sa Maliliit na Magniniyog” and pledged to end what they described as the “systematic oppression of small

coconut farmers.” The coco levy fund scam dates back to the 1970s and ’80s and involved the late President Ferdinand Marcos and his cronies. It is said that Marcos, businessman Eduardo Cojuangco and Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile conspired to tax coconut farmers. Duterte, however, defended Cojuangco, saying the latter has no control over the fund after the Supreme Court ruled on the issue. The problem, he added, is with a government that is dillydallying the distribution of at least P85 million. Farmers also asked Duterte and Cayetano to focus on agrarian reform, arguing that even if the money is returned to them, it might still be useless if they are left landless.-Robertzon Ramirez/Philstar

US says it will not recognize South China Sea exclusion zone

PH health expenditure climbs to P526-B MANILA, Philippines – The country’s spending on health increased to more than P526 billion with more than half of it coming out of the pockets of Filipinos, data from the Philippine National Health Accounts (PNHA) show. According to the PNHA, which is under the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), public health expenditure was over P526 billion in 2013, or 11.7 percent higher than the P471 billion spent in 2012. Of that amount, 56.3 percent or P296.5 billion came from out-of-pocket spending. These are expenses paid for by individuals for medicine, medical consultation and hospitalization. The percentage is higher than the ideal 45 percent. Private sources like insurance companies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and expenses by private es-

tablishments and schools accounted for P62.4 billion or 11.9 percent of the 2013 health spending. The PNHA also showed that over P99.7 billion or 18.9 percent of the total health spending came from both the national and local governments in 2013. Health spending through social insurance – composed of the National Health Insurance Program and employees’ compensation for health, both funded by government through premium contributions – amounted to over P60.4 billion or 11.5 percent of the total health expenditure. This was also lower than the 19-percent target. Grants from international funding agencies accounted for 1.37 percent or P7.2 billion. This may be translated to grants for medical supplies and equipment. -Ghio Ong

WASHINGTON - The United States has told China it will not recognize an exclusion zone in the South China Sea and would view such a move as “destabilizing,” US Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work said on Wednesday. US officials have expressed concern that an international court ruling expected in the coming weeks on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its South China Sea claims could prompt Beijing to declare an air defense identification zone, or ADIZ, in the region, as it did in the East China Sea in 2013. Work told an event hosted by the Washington Post that the United States would not recognize such an exclusion zone in the South China Sea, just as it did not recognize the one China established in the East China Sea. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion in global trade passes every year. “We don’t believe they have a basis in international law, and we’ve said over and over (that) we will fly, sail and go wherever international law allows,” Work said. “We have spoken quite plainly to our Chinese counterparts and said that we think an ADIZ would be destabilizing. We would prefer that all of the claims in the South China Sea

This little robot named Casper befriends kids with terminal illnesses Companion robots, long promised as a way to stave off loneliness among the elderly, are being tested among children at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. Little Casper is a humanoid robot designed to work with hospitalized children, according to Euronews. The robot, created by the University of Lisbon and project Monarch, is able to detect and navigate the environment around it, talk and play games. As a social robot, Casper is specifically programmed to converse with humans in a friendly manner. Project coordinator for Monarch João Silva Sequeira told Euronews that when first researching a potential robot, he and his team decided they needed to make a cute one. To come up with an appealing design, Sequeria said they interviewed 100 kids. “We try to trigger a positive reaction from them,” project researcher Víctor González

Pacheco told Euronews. “Doctors tell us that the happier these children are, the faster, the better they recover after treatment. So we want Casper to help children to have fun, to play with them. We want children to establish the kind of relationship with this robot that they could have with a pet, or even a friend.” This hinges on the idea that people who remain positive when sick fair better than their

more pessimistic counterparts. Studies show mixed evidence on this front, according to the American Cancer Society, and the prevailing belief is there isn’t substantive evidence that happiness is connected to survival. Still, there’s no harm in keeping spirits high, especially within a hospital setting. Researchers hope to bring Casper to more hospitals in the next three years. - Ruth Reader, Mic

Teen who posed as senator, toured high school pleads guilty SYCAMORE, Ohio (AP) — A teenager who toured an Ohio high school while posing as a state senator has pleaded guilty to impersonating a peace officer. Prosecutors say they’ll recommend probation for Marion resident Izaha Akins. The 18year-old pleaded guilty Monday to the felony charge. Authorities say Akins spoke to a government class at Mohawk High School in Sycamore for an hour last December. Officials didn’t realize they’d

been duped until Republican Sen. David Burke showed up weeks later for a scheduled appearance. Burke calls what Akins did an extremely elaborate scheme. The impersonating a peace officer charge includes anyone who poses as a state employee. His attorney said Monday that Akins is sorry for the negative attention he brought to the school, but he’s glad it pushed schools to improve their security procedures.

Philippine banks down to 632 in 2015 MANILA - The number of banks operating in the Philippines continued to decline last year with the exit of weak players particularly rural banks, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported on Tuesday. Data from the central bank showed the number of big and small banks operating in the country reached 632 last year, 16 less than the 648 in 2014. “This indicates the continued consolidation of banks as well as the exit of weaker players in the banking system,” the BSP said. The number of big banks or universal and commercial banks went up to 40 in 2015 from 36 in 2014 with the entry of new foreign banks. These consisted of 21 private domestic banks, 12 foreign bank branches, three government banks, and six foreign bank subsidiaries. President Aquino signed RA 10641 in July last year amending the foreign banks law by removing the limit of foreign banks in the country earlier set at only 10. Foreign banks under the new law have also been allowed to own as much as 100 percent of any local bank, removing the

previous cap of 60 percent. So far, the BSP has also allowed six more foreign banks to set up shop in the Philippines. These include Sumitomo Mitsui of Japan, Cathay United Bank of Taiwan, the Industrial Bank of Korea, Seoul-based Shinhan Bank, Yuanta Bank of Taiwan, and United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) of Singapore. The BSP said the number of thrift banks reached 69 last year from 68 in 2014 while the number of rural and cooperative banks decreased by 3.5 percent to 524 from 543. The BSP ordered the closure of 14 rural banks that were placed under the supervision of the state-run Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC) in 2015. The BSP together with PDIC and Land Bank of the Philippines have issued the guidelines for the Consolidated Program for Rural Banks (CPRB) to further encourage mergers and consolidations among rural banks. Meanwhile, the BSP reported the number of branches and other offices of Philippine banks went up by 3.8 percent to 10,756 last year from 10,361 in 2014. -Lawrence Agcaoili/Philstar

sees reason, purpose in life’s setbacks

A

fter completing her first Kapamilya teleserye, Pasion de Amor, where she earned praise for her portrayal of the lead female character Norma, she had since entered filmdom by storm with the blockbuster rom-com Always Be My Maybe opposite Gerald Anderson. But little did those who raved about her knew a major mishap she suffered that could have even put an abrupt end to her blossoming career. And as she got into filming the movie, one person closest to her heart passed away so suddenly.

Opportunity of a lifetime Pasion de Amor was certainly the biggest break for the actress, who nailed the role after an audition. It had been the opportunity of a lifetime she was waiting for, after a long layoff from the limelight since transferring from one network to another. And it would have been such a waste had a freak accident at a rock concert would leave a permanent mark on her face. As taping started for Pasion d e Amor in October 2014, she attended a concert of Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus, whose frontman is her boyfriend Bones Frankenstein (real name is Badi Bolkiah, son of Brunei prince Jefri and Pinay wife Evangeline). Bones had invited Arci Muñoz to go on stage during a number and obliged. And as she jammed with the band, she accidentally banged her head on a microphone that left her with a serious wound near the eye.

Visible scar She was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery that had her open wound on the eyelid stitched that led to a visible scar, which appeared to have altered her face altogether. In an interview with PEP.ph last year, Arci feared losing the precious opportunity of advancing her career as part of Pasion de Amor. “I’ve been given this rare opportunity ’tapos ganito pa yung nangyari. Kaya alam mo yun, nung time na iyon sobra akong depressed, hindi ko alam ang

gagawin ko,” she said. As it happened just after she got accepted and tapings were already scheduled to start, she feared production would drop her with the ugly scar that is clearly seen onscreen, given the pristine looks her character demands. Arci also noted that production would not have time to wait for her wound to heal as they have a strict schedule to follow.

Thoughts of leaving showbiz “Sa isip ko, ‘Ano ba? Para sa akin ba talaga?’ Nung time na iyon naisip ko na, ‘Hindi na ba ako mag-aartista?’ she said. Arci indeed entertained the thought of leaving showbiz and instead concentrate on music as the lead singer of her band Philia. Should ABS-CBN went on to decide in dropping her, it would have become the latest in a string of misfortunes she had experienced in the industry, including her exit from her last TV network, which opted not to renew her contract. But a development concerning one of the teleserye’s leading men proved to be a blessing. “Actually, nasakto din na Jake (Cuenca) went to New York to study for a month,” Arci tells PEP.ph further. “So sakto, like the day before he leaves to New York, naaksidente ako.” Jake’s studies at the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute gave her enough time to remove the scar through laser treatments. “Sabi ko sa isip ko, ‘Jake, tagalan mo pa diyan [sa New York].’ Kasi kailangan ko talaga ng mahabang oras para magpagaling. Pero yun, thank God nandito pa rin ako.” And, Arci indeed made the most of the opportunity, exceling in her craft and impressed Pasion de Amor audiences with her riveting, alluring, and intense on-screen performance throughout its near nine-month run. She has since turned out to be next Kapamilya star the network was molding and had become its next marquee personality in Star Cinema.

Biggest blow As she further crossed over to film, Arci further amazed producers with her irresistible charm and natural talent. Moreso the audiences when it was finally released as they gave Arci a rousing ovation. But in February, when she started filming the top-grosser, Arci suffered one painful personal blow, more painful than any of her previous setbacks—the death of her father, Manuel. She said it was something she initially found difficult to accept. “Mahirap mag-move on, iba’t ibang sitwasyon. Depende, e, hindi lang dahil iniwan ka ng boyfriend mo. Paano kapag iniwan ka talaga ng loved one mo?” she tells the Philippine Star. “Like for example right now... What I’m going through na my dad passed while I’m doing the movie.”-Gerry Plaza

Daniel Matsunaga, Erich Gonzales celebrate first anniversary as couple AS the stars of the most watched daytime teleserye Be My Lady for the past two months now, Daniel Matsunaga and Erich Gonzales said they have already overcome whatever doubts they may have had about being a real-life couple who work together on a show. “Walang disadvantage (laughs). Narinig namin from friends and other people that it’s really hard to have a relationship and a soap opera at the same time but well I guess God is really good and He’s really at the center of our relationship. Lahat ng opportunities na binigay ng ABS-CBN sa amin we’re doing good and it’s such a blessing because we are getting to know each other better and better,” shared Daniel during the Be My Lady presscon held last March 28 inside ABS-CBN. Erich said she was actually the one who was more worried than her Brapanese boyfriend. “Agree ako kay Daniel (na

walang disadvantage) kasi so far so good. Una ang worry ko kasi first time ko makatrabaho yung relasyon ko so parang iniisip ko baka hindi mag-wo-work kasi siyempre iba ang trabaho sa personal life pero ngayon with Be My Lady everything is going well. Mas nakikilala namin yung isa’t isa and we get to spend more time with each other. We make more memories. Sobrang saya, we’re very blessed and very thankful. We give all the glory to God,” she added. Apart from being dubbed as the new “Daytime Prince and Princess” of the Kapamilya network, the couple also admitted that they recently celebrated their first year anniversary. “This one year it was amazing. A lot of blessings dumating sa buhay namin and being together was the biggest blessing. I got to know her family and she got to know my family.

7 I guess that’s the biggest step for something else. We’re very, very happy that this one year it felt really short. It really felt fast because I guess because we love each other and we really hope that we will spend the rest of our lives together,” Daniel explained. When asked for details about how they celebrated their first anniversary as a couple, Erich admitted she did not want to give specific details of that day. “Basta po this year (laughs). Nag one year na kami ngayon. We celebrate it everyday when we’re together (laughs). Everyday is special with him. Just a very simple dinner. Yun, nothing. Yun lang po yun. Those simple things, yun talaga yung nag-mamatter sa amin. yung ties with each other. Hindi na yung mga material things kasi hindi naman natin yan nadadala sa heaven. It’s really more about spending time with the one that you love. Anniversary or not, parang he makes everyday special talaga. He makes sure of that,” she shared. -Rhea Manila Santos

‘Wonder Woman’ has advice for Pia Wurtzbach

MANILA - Say what you will about “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” like how it was as entertaining “as having a porcelain sink broken over your head,” but at least it gave fans a more-than-satisfying reintroduction to Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, a former Israeli army combat trainer and Miss Israel pageant winner. In an interview with ABS-CBN News’ Yong Chavez, the 30-year-old Gadot shared her thrill over the positive reactions her portrayal has received so far. She also expressed her excitement in playing the Amazonian princess in a full-length film in 2017. “It’s a very different story,” said Gadot. “This is the very first time we’re telling the coming of age, we’re telling the history of Wonder Woman.”

First appearing in All Star Comics #8 in 1941, creator William Moulton Marston, a psychologist who paved the way for the invention of the modern lie detector, said he wanted Wonder Woman to become a “psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world.” Only time will tell if the plans of Warner Bros. and DC for the comic book icon will coincide with Marston’s vision, but at least it appears Gadot is more than up for the task. Her brief appearance in the otherwise dour “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has been hailed as the “best thing in the movie,” and it may usher in a new era of superhero films starring female protagonists.

She also seems to have the determination and wisdom of Wonder Woman when asked for her advice for Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, who found herself in the limelight after winning the crown in a controversial fashion. “Be determined, don’t give up. What’s yours will always be yours. What’s not yours will never b e yours. Be prepared a n d ready,” she told the Filipina. -Philstar

Direct involvement on serious deportation issues

very day from Monday to Saturday my office deals with immigration issues but some times the file is so unique that for so many reasons I need to get directly involved. I would like to share with you a case that I felt required serious help as the situation had reached a crisis point where the person in question was within hours of being placed on a plane and deported. A couple of weeks ago I was approached about a lady who was in serious need of help. She was locked up and about to be deported by Immigration Canada. I was told by a close friend here that I actually met her here in Winnipeg just over 10 years ago at a special event. Twelve years ago Jane (not her real name) came to Winnipeg and she arrived here as a newlywed and was about to start her new life in Canada but shortly after landing in Canada

she determined that she was not prepared to stay married to the person who sponsored her. I suspect that her decision upset a lot of people of which a number of them felt she should be deported at that time. There are many people every year that try to immigrate to Canada by marrying someone and if their true motivation is not discovered then they will ultimately be allowed to immigrate. They call it a marriage of convenience and because it happens as often as it does it really slows down the overall processing of all marriages and sadly marriages of conveniences really affect those marriages that have a suspicious look to

he government has heard this before, but it bears repeating over and over: inadequate infrastructure, economic restrictions and bureaucracy are preventing the Philippines from achieving its full growth potential. This is according to a recent report prepared by the Nordic Business Council Philippines. The NBCP promotes trade, industry and investment between the Philippines and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden plus the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Despite sustained economic growth and sound macroeconomic fundamentals, key challenges continue to hinder the Philippines’ competitiveness as an investment destination and trading partner, according to the NBCP report. The organization noted that the Philippines continues to lag behind the other founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in terms of attracting job-generating foreign direct investment. Other business groups have long called for the easing of economic restrictions imposed by the Constitution on foreign investments. Amending the restrictive provisions will have to wait for a new administration. Dealing with the other problems does not need Charter change. The NBCP noted the inadequacy of airports, power, roads, seaports and telecommunications facilities – something that can be addressed through executive initiatives. Resolute political will can also remedy the red tape and corruption that investors have complained about for years. The NBCP report lamented the “repetitive, complex, and often conflicting orders and procedures of government agencies on business permits, licensing, entry approval, and an array of regulations.” The Aquino administration has often touted the economic gains achieved in the past six years, particularly the nation’s first-ever investment grade. The positive credit rating, however, has not translated into significant levels of investments that can provide meaningful jobs. Unless the issues raised for several years now by investors are decisively addressed, the gains of the past six years will be wasted. Philstar

How not to hire a president

I

apologize if today’s title suggests that this is a “how to” article. It is not.

What I hope to accomplish is to make people realize that the way we have been participating and managing our electoral process or challenging candidates to show what they’ve got is all wrong. Copying what other countries do in their electoral process is not necessarily a good idea or something that fits or works for us. For example hosting political debates that the Comelec and so-called political scientists have adopted straight out of the good old USA. US political debates are nothing more than media candy or entertainment designed to spice up public interest and create “made for television” programs that advertisers can spend money on and networks can rake profits from as well as jack up their ratings. Hosting “debates” is similar to a “high-lighter pen.” It highlights both the good and the bad in a candidate but it can never educate the ignorant. Debates may create impressions or cause a stir but in the American system of selecting and fielding candidates they have a very long process of nomination, competition, comparison and “annihilation” or elimination that is largely party-based and not on public impressions. Following the lead of the Comelec, other organizations

The fact that most people are choosing their Vice Presidential candidate based on popularity or emotion is frightening. or business groups have hosted their own “forums” or one-onone with the candidates. Sadly these forums end up looking and sounding more like talk shows. In one particular event, the forum looked more like a set-up for certain people to rub elbows with candidates or show off their hosting skills and tough set of questions rather than a time dedicated to giving candidates a chance to sell themselves much like job applicants. I found a statement on the internet that sums up the situation: “Is there any point in public debate in a society where hardly anyone has been taught how to think, while millions have been taught what to think?” – Peter Hitchens Broadcast Media, political handlers and the Comelec tell us that debates are good because it is a good way to gauge the abilities and competence of candidates specifically the Presidential and Vice-Presidential aspirants. That’s fine if most people actually understood what a President needs to be and what experience and expertise he should have in order to best do the job of running the ship of state.

Right now, all the politics I’ve been hearing is “personal” or people getting personal with and about the candidates. In a society where people “think right,” the questions would be about “professional” qualifications, track record, accomplishments and most importantly actual plans and not just wish lists or a pocket full of promises and magic spells OR “What’s in it for me?.” The fact that most people are choosing their Vice Presidential candidate based on popularity or emotion is frightening. The VP is number 2 and in the event that the President dies or is incapacitated, the Vice President must be equal to and as capable as the President assuming we actually vote one. Our problem is that we have not had a President die on us in recent history or God-forbid, a real crisis situation where the President has been taken out and #2 has to step up! This is the sort of question we should ask and be thinking about: If the elected President dies in office or was assassinated will my Vice President stand and deliver or simply go through the motions and do the countdown to the next elections? Judging from the reviews and posts I had to wade through on Facebook, it was apparent

Cito Beltran

CTALK that the last debate was entertaining and as revealing as any celebrity gossip talk show. It gave people something to talk about. But that is as far as it went for most people. It would certainly have been a different story if people actually knew how to think then they would probably be asking: how realistic or relevant are debates and the topics selected to the real lives of Filipinos. How can a candidate say his piece in two minutes or less while being heckled, harassed or attacked during the crossfire? How can ordinary people expect to get answers to real life questions when it is the rich asking the questions? Why are we even having debates considering most of the candidates are only seen in the market place or town hall every three or six years? Why can’t ordinary people simply have the chance to ask and be heard instead of being told to watch so-called educated and civilized individuals act in the most uncouth manner and language?

Right thinking would raise the question: have the goals or selling points of the debates actually been achieved to the point of showing or teaching voters OBJECTIVELY who should be President or Vice President? So far most viewers have walked away more like spectators of a contact sport or a highly polarized basketball game between Ateneo versus La Salle and the old Crispa versus Meralco duels. They either praise their candidates to high heavens or curse their opponents to hell. Very few actually commented that they had a “realization” or learned something vital that would impact their choice. Instead of debates, I challenge the candidates to a two-hour business presentation where they can present the premise of their candidacy, what they have identified as the real needs of the Philippines, what are the opportunities, assets and challenges before them, and what would their strategy, team composition, and time table be, and what would be the metrics year on year. But more than just presenting, they would have to be challenged by a panel of real life experts to tear up their assumptions and their solutions. Once we treat candidates as applicants or presenters inside the boardroom or graduate students defending their thesis, we will surely get a clearer picture of who can run Philippines.gov versus who think they can.

Weapons of love against terror

T

he Holy Week celebration just passed, and for my part, I was engrossed in watching the Discovery and History channel and watching programs about religion and commemoration of the special Holy days. I also watched Pope Francis as he celebrated the Holy Week in the Vatican and spoke to the thousands of faithful present and the millions more watching at home. It was very inspiring to see so many sharing in days of faithfulness and prayer, but at the same time, it was obvious the mood was a bit somber too. After all, terror once again spread throughout the world in the wake of the latest bomb attacks all happening in the span of just a few days. On March 22, Brussels was the victim of bomb attacks that struck their airport and railway system killing 35 people and injuring at least 300. It was another tragedy in a series of horrific terror bombings that left the world speechless. The attacks were claimed by the Islamic State militant group (IS) and are another attack on their growing violent and bloody list of terror activities aimed at spreading fear and hate throughout the world. It was a very sad way to begin the Holy Week celebration. People from all religions around the world commiserated with those who were injured and lost loved ones in Brussels, and not

just in Brussels of course but all over the world where terrorists have attacked. I know that not every attack gets the same amount of headline space in the media, but that doesn’t mean one matters more or less than the other. The world needs to be united as one in mourning the loss of life around the globe.

Photos of footballs smeared in blood and images of those hurt and killed in the bombing and the stampede that happened afterwards showed up all over social media and the world once again prayed – this time for Iraq and for the horrors the men, women, and children experienced there. And if that weren’t enough for one week, last Easter, another bomb went off in Lahore targeting Christians celebrating the holiday and killing 71 people and injuring so many more.

Brussels was the second large-scale attack on an EU capital claimed by IS after the Paris attack last November. It just seems to be getting worse and terrorists are preying on everyone’s fear and distrust. It makes them stronger. After what happened in Brussels on Tuesday, the world already entered the Holy Week weekend in a rather somber mood. Then Friday, another bomb attack took place at a football stadium near Baghdad killing 41 with over 105 injured. Videos online show that the bomb went off just as the officials were hand-

To say it has been a tragic week is an understatement. So many lives lost and so many people hurt, scared, and wary. This has become the state of the world we live in and rightfully so. Here in the Philippines, while we have – so far – thankfully been spared from a bombing attack, we aren’t spared from the fear. Last Monday, whether or not it was unrelated to what has been transpiring around the world, a bomb threat was sent to Ateneo de Manila University. Students and staff had to be evacuated. Thankfully no bomb went off

INTROSPECTIVE

and no one was harmed. However, the fact that this type of terror and fear is not far from our doorsteps is something we should always be aware of. It’s ignorant to assume that any place is safe these days. But as the terror around the world increases, what are we supposed to do? It’s understandable to be scared, it would be crazy not to be, but how are we supposed to respond? I understand that some people would immediately want to aggressively seek revenge on those who have killed all these innocent people without a second thought. However, we also have to stop and think of what this will accomplish? They hit us, we hit them, and they hit us again… Will it just perpetuate a cycle of violence that will never end? I believe that it would. Whenever hate and fear and anger are cultivated I believe that the terrorists win. This is what they want after all. They want a world divided, fighting against one another, tearing each other apart. What they don’t want is for the world to stand united. In the end, I think that’s what we need to

do. I understand that it’s easier to look at one another and the killers behind these attacks through lenses of hate, but it would only serve to strengthen their cause. I was moved by the Pope’s message over the Easter holiday. He tempered his Easter sermon denouncing “blind terrorism,” recalling the attacks in Europe, Africa, and all over the world as well as expressing his sadness and dismay as the refugee crisis worsens with people trying to escape their war-torn countries. He urged everyone to use “weapons of love” against these brutal attacks. And while some realists might say that love won’t stop bombs from going off, I think the Pope’s message is a good one. He didn’t say we need to lighten up on security or on being aware and being careful, but we can’t let these attacks take away our love for one another and our desire to help each other. In the end I don’t feel this is religious war. Sure, it’s a factor, but it’s not only Christians and Catholics who are getting hurt. Muslims are suffering and dying as well. The actions of an extreme few should not be attributed to everyone. I think it’s important for everyone to unite to fight this war. That’s the only way we’ll survive. We can’t let terror divide us or the terrorists will get exactly what they want.

Angeline Quinto: Maybe I’m born for singing contests MANILA – Angeline Quinto said she almost didn’t join this year’s Himig Handog P-Pop Love Song writing competition. “Pangatlong beses ko ng makasali sa Himig Handog. ‘Yong unang beses ko po na sumali dito, hindi ako nanalo,” she said in a recent interview. “Siyempre ang bigat sa amin na hindi nanalo ng song, iisipin namin dahil ba sa amin ‘yon. Hindi maiiwasan maisip ‘yon so nahihiya ako do’n sa composers.” “Kaya sana sa taon na ito ayoko na sana, pero narealize ko na siguro pinanganak talaga ako para sa contest,” she added. However, she realized that maybe there are

“composers sa mundo, sigurado ako isa dyan nagdarasal na makanta ko ang kanta nila. So naisip ko na kung may tao mang gano’n sa akin, e, hindi ko ipagkakait ang boses ko para kantahin ang kanta niya.” She also noted that most of them interpreting the song for the competition doesn’t mind the prize they might win, it’s enough for them to have the composer’s “trust na tinatanggap namin and ‘yong love no’ng gumawa no’n.” Angeline is interpreting the song “Parang Tayo Pero Hindi” with Michael Pangilinan, composed by Marlon Barnuevo. -Joyce Jimenez

James Reid addresses demeaning article about girlfriend Nadine Lustre James Reid did not waste time as he swiftly addressed the viral article about his girlfriend Nadine Lustre. James took his response to his Twitter account in the early hours of Tuesday morning, March 29. The viral article that JaDine fans have been sharing on social media was titled How to be Nadine Lustre by Inquirer’s sister publication Preen. The article essentially talked about the how Nadine fared in the business and how she made James “fall” for her. The Fil-Australian hunk, meanwhile, addressed the article’s writer on Twitter and took the time to point out what “she missed”

about why he fell for his love team partner. The This Time stars made their relationship public last month after their first-ever concert at the Araneta Coliseum. Angry JaDines demanding for an apology even made the writer’s name trend on Twitter. Turns out, the same author had also previously “shamed” other stars such as Liza Soberano. A few hours after James made his sentiments known, Preen issued a n apology to

James and Nadine—as well as JaDine fans—on Twitter and said that they had already taken down the offending article. Preen also indicated that they were going to look into their editorial process. Meanwhile, James and Nadine just concluded the successful European leg of their JaDine In Love World Tour.-Maureen Marie Belmonte

here is probably one of these parked in your garage. Or perhaps you have a friend or a relative who owns one. And most likely, this was your ver y first car. Whatever the story, each of us has a memory to tell about what is known as the world’s favorite car: the Toyota Corolla. It all began in November 1966 when Toyota Motor Corporation first unveiled the Corolla in the Japanese market. Its reason for being was to provide a no-frills mode of transpor t that was reliable and didn’t compromise on too many things. Lit tle did the Japanese carmaker expect that this model would not only prove to be an instant sales success, but would likewise practically catapult the company’s status on the global automotive map. From an initial 480,000 units in annual sales, Toyota was already averaging more than double its output at roughly 1.1 million units just four years af ter the car’s launch. All thanks to the lit tle runabout known as the Corolla. Af ter 50 years and 43 million units sold, the world’s most sellable car marks its golden bir thday with a year-long celebration, a special model, a refreshed 2017 edition, and of course, countless memories. Actresses Gina Rodriguez, the star of Jane The Virgin, and Hannah Simone, who appears in New Girl, tell the story of how their respective Corollas helped jumpstar t their careers and paved the way for who they are today. Rodriguez fondly recalls how her Toyota was her constant companion as she pursued her Hollywood dream. Meanwhile, Hannah learned how to drive in her dad’s trusty Corolla. And even Toyota’s very own president, Akio Toyoda, fondly relives his humble beginnings wi th his four th-generation Corolla sedan back in the ’80s, when he was fresh out of college. Just like these personalities, the Corolla has come a long way. Through the years,

it has not only grown bigger but has also introduced a number of technologies that have helped shape the automotive landscape to how we know it today. Through the Corolla, we first encountered the famous MacPherson strut suspension, t wo-speed wipers, and backing-up (or reverse) lights. Car enthusiasts might remember that the Corolla was the very first mainstream model in the local market to feature 16valve engines back in 1989. Of course, who can forget such nameplates as the SR5, the Lif tback and the AE86? Apar t from a year-long bir thday bash, buyers of the new Corolla in the US can opt for the available Toyota Safety Sense that features such niceties as lane-depar ture warning, pre-collision mitigation, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beam. These are in addition to a slew of upgrades that are par t of the 2017 model. Toyota Motor Philippines still hasn’t revealed what it plans to do for the bir thday of the iconic model, but we never theless want to greet the car that ferried us to college, work, weddings and other impor tant life events. So happy bir thday, Toyota Corolla! Thank you for the memories. -Gerard Jude Castillo

Robin Padilla’s older brother to be detained in New Bilibid Prisons Sandiganbayan’s AntiGraft Court First Division has scrapped former Camarines Norte governor Casimiro “Roy” Padilla’s motion to be detained in their provincial jail. The First Division, via a commitment order issued on Monday afternoon, stated that effective March 21, 2016, the eldest brother of Robin and Rommel Padilla, as well as BB Gandanghari, would be under the custody of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City. An ABS-CBNNews.com report cited that Roy has been in the custody of the National Police (PNP) Crime Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) since last Friday, March 18, after being arrested following months of being in hiding. “I hereby commit to you the person of accused Casimiro A.

Padilla a.k.a. Roy A. Padilla Jr. sentenced by this Court per Decision promulgated on November 27, 2012,” said the commitment order signed by Associate Justice Reynaldo Cruz. It was November 2012 when the First Division found Roy guilty of malversation of public property “over his failure to return to the provincial government a .45 caliber pistol and ammunition amounting to P7,462 issued by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in 1992 during his term as governor.” Roy has appealed the Sandiganbayan’s decision to the Supreme Court but the department sided with the anti-graft court in April 2014. After which, Roy submitted the motion to be detained in Camarines Norte, since, as he asserts, that is where the crime happened.

He even cited the Revised Administrative Code of the Philippines, which states that a convicted person sentenced to a maximum of three years of imprisonment or a fine not more than P1,000 shall be considered a provincial prisoner instead of a national prisoner. Contrary to his claim that he was only sentenced to a maximum of two years and four months of maximum imprisonment, the First Division, stressed that Roy was actually sentenced to a minimum of four months and one day to a maximum of four years and two months of maximum imprisonment. Although the older Padilla underscored that he is ready to face the charges against him, he pointed out that the cases against him were “politically motivated.” -Maureen Marie Belmonte

Where ‘Batman v Superman’ opening ranks all-time Six of the top 10 movie openings of all-time belong to superhero films following the estimated $170.1 million debut of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” When final figures are released Monday, the Warner Bros. release may drop a notch below “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.” But the huge opening is just the most recent movie to open with box-office far beyond the once hard-to-reach $100 million mark. Here’s where the “Batman v Superman” opening ranks: 1. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” $248 million. (Dec. 18, 2015) 2. “Jurassic World,” $208.8 million. (June 12, 2015)

Philippines 3rd ‘winningest’ in global pageants It’s Binibini season again, or haven’t you noticed? In two weeks, five Bb. Pilipinas will be chosen: for International, Supranational, Intercontinental, Tourism International and Universe. Whoever wins Bb. Pilipinas-Universe will bear with the added pressure when she goes to the 2016 Miss Universe pageant since the current title-holder, Pia Wurtzbach, is a Filipina — unless, of course, she is good enough to duplicate the feat of Venezuela which scored the first-ever back-to-back win in the pageant (2008 Miss U Dayana Mendoza relinquishing her crown to 2009 Miss U Stefania Fernandez).

Flashback: The first Miss World pageant, founded by the late Eric Morley, was held on July 29, 1951 at Lyceum Ballroom in London won by Kerstin Hakansson of Sweden. Founded by Pacific Mills, a California-based clothing company, the maiden Miss Universe finals was staged on June 28, 1952 at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, USA, won by Armi Kuusela of Finland. The first Miss International pageant was held also in Long Beach, California, USA, after the Miss Universe pageant moved to Miami Beach, Florida, that year. Winner was Colombia’s Maria Stella Marquez. Organized by Carousel Productions, headed by Ramon Monzon, Lorraine Schuck and Peachy Veneracion, the Miss Earth pageant started in 2001 with the first finals staged on

Oct. 21 that year at the UP Theater, Diliman, Quezon City, won by Catharina Svensen of Denmark. Here are the 11 “winningest” countries in those four pageants:

Osteoarthritis of the hand

O

steoarthritis is a common cause of pain and stiffness that can affect many joints, most commonly the hip, knee, and hands (finger and thumb joints). Normally, the ends of bones are covered in cartilage, which allows joints to glide smoothly. With osteoarthritis, this cartilage and even sometimes the underlying bone gets broken down, causing joint stiffness, pain, and inflammation. The following article will provide basic exercises to help alleviate pain and stiffness in the joints of the hand.

One tell-tale sign of osteoarthritis in a joint is morning stiffness that resolves within 15 minutes. Moving each joint using range of motion exercises will help lubricate the joints. Strengthening surrounding muscles will also help support the joints.

. Strengthening: You can purchase play-dough or silly putty. Specialty medical supply shops have putty in different consistencies. First, focus on gripping the putty in your hand and squeezing it tight to make a full fist. Repeat this 10 times.

Next, place the putty on table top. Place your fingertips into the putty and focus on spreading your fingers apart, spreading out the putty. Repeat 10 times

. Moist heat can help decrease stiffness within the finger and thumb joints. You can wrap a warm wet towel around your hand or use a standard heating modality such as a hot water bottle. Paraffin wax baths are another excellent option.

Do these exercises daily to help improve the pain and stiffness in your hands caused by osteoarthritis.

2

. Range of motion: This exercise consists of making 3 different fists. Repeat each fists 10 times, making sure you fully straighten your fingers between each fist:

Start with hands straight up a. Just fingertips b. Full fist c. Fingertips to mid palm

Roach wants to see old Pacman power, speed HOLLYWOOD – Freddie Roach said he misses the old Manny Pacquiao, and that’s the Manny Pacquiao he wants to see on April 9 in Las Vegas. Roach said it’s Pacquiao’s power and speed that will carry them to victory over Timothy Bradley for their third fight at the MGM Grand. He hasn’t seen both for quite some time now. “The speed to overwhelm the opponent but it’s really speed and power. That’s what I want to see. We haven’t seen that for a long time,” said Roach. Pacquiao hasn’t stopped an opponent inside the distance for seven years now, not since Miguel Cotto failed to last 12 rounds against him in 2009. Pacquiao has lost three of his last six fights. Twelve days from now, Pacquiao takes on Bradley for a third time, looking for an impressive win and a spectacular sendoff. Pacquiao said he will retire after this fight. Monday here in Los Angeles, the 37-year-old Pacquiao continued to impress his fans at Griffith Park during an early morning run, and then Roach

at the Wild Card Gym in the afternoon. Pacquiao succeeded. “He was on fire. It was a very good workout. He looked great with his power, his speed. He was very fast. It was a very good day,” said Roach. Pacquiao had been training for six weeks now, pitching camp in oven-hot General Santos City then moving on to this City of Angeles last March 12. The hard work has been done, according to the chief trainer. “He’s ready to fight but the thing is we still have a week to go and a couple of sparring days,” said Roach. “But he’s ready to fight right now. We’re going eight rounds tomorrow but we might change that to six,” he said. The last thing Roach wants to do now is make Pacquiao do more than what’s necessary. “I don’t want to burn him out and overdo it,” he said. “He’s already doing well,” Roach added.-Abac Cordero

Pacman hails Comelec decision World eight-division box-

ing champion Manny Pacquiao hails the Commission on Elections-Manila for not preventing the airing of his April 9 fight against World Boxing Organization Welterweight king Timothy Bradley. In a text message to this writer early dawn Wednesday, Pacquiao said “I’m very happy right now because the Comelec came up with a favorable decision. This further motivates me to work hard to ensure victory.” Pacquiao added that he’s been praying hard asking God to provide wisdom and guidance on the Comelec officials. “This is not for my personal glory. I’m fighting for the honor of our country and to glorify God through sports,” Pacquiao said. A senatorial aspirant who is virtually unknown especially among the Filipino masses had asked the Comelec to determine if the telecast of the Pacquiao-Bradley bout would violate election laws, noting that Pacquiao is also running for senator in the May 9 polls. The petitioner complained that the international and local media coverage of the fight would give Pacquiao undue advantage over other senatorial candi-

dates. Pacquiao, however, claimed media coverage will focus not on his candidacy but on his third ring encounter with Bradley. Pacquiao had even asked the members of the media covering his training to set aside politics and focus on his upcoming trilogy against Bradley. “If you notice, April or May and November or December are the usual schedules of my fight abroad. Bradley rematch was in April 2014 and the Mayweather mega-buck fight was May last year. It’s not the fighter but the promoter who decides the date of the fight,” Pacquiao said. Pacquiao added the petitioner was just trying to ride on his popularity to boost his political stock. “He was just trying to catch media attention because only a few knew him. I understand him and I’m praying for him,” Pacquiao said. Many political pundits opined that preventing Pacquiao’s fight from being shown live in the Philippines is a big political boo-boo. “We all knew how Filipinos, especially the masses, love Manny Pacquiao. Everytime he fights, everything grinds to a halt. Ito lang yong tanging kaligayahan ng mga Pilipino tapos pipigilin mo? The petitioner is committing a political harakiri,” a political observer, who asked not to be named, said. The Comelec yesterday made a unanimous decision that it is not within its power to stop the telecast of the Pacquiao-Bradley trilogy.-Aquiles Z. Zonio/ PhilBoxing.com

ufc 196:

admits relationship

Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor with foreigner pass drug tests Despite all the allegations thrown around by the UFC 196 headliners, everyone on the card passed their drug tests. UFC 196 is officially in the books without a hitch. One of the biggest PPVs in company history saw headliners Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz throwing around some heavy accusations in regards to drug testing, but in the end, everyone passed. The info was confirmed by the

Nevada Athletic Commission and USADA officer Jeff Novitzky (via MMA Fighting). Before the fight, Diaz accused McGregor of being on steroids, along with the rest of the roster. Diaz himself has always fallen under the suspicion of not being able to pass a test for marijuana, despite never failing before. But with only 11 days to prepare and the fact that his brother Nick has been the poster child for weed suspensions, many

believed he may pop. Well, he didn’t. According to the MMA Fighting article, 18 fighters were tested by NAC and 6 were handled by USADA. USADA handled the headliners, Diaz and McGregor, along with the co-main eventers, Holly Holm and Miesha Tate. I guess that’s one less potential headache the UFC has to deal with as they try to set up a rematch between Diaz and Conor for UFC 200 in July.-Tim Burke

For the first time, sexy star Ellen Adarna went on record to say that she is now in a relationship with a foreigner. Adarna, however, refused to disclose any information about her special someone during her exclusive interview with entertainment site Push. “Yes I am dating someone right now but he’s not Filipino. He’s not based here yet so there. I think mga afam ‘di naman sila ata nanliligaw. When you’re dating it’s clear na ‘tayo na’. Wala na ‘yung ligawligaw na part,” she said. “It’s not like very Filipino na nililigawan ka pa.” The actress revealed that they have been dating for a month now. Meanwhile, Adarna also announced that she will start shooting a movie following the success of her series “Pasion de Amor.” “Mag sho-shoot kami ng movie in third week of April ...so pahinga muna. Ang tagal tagal rin naming nag [teleserye] so pahinga muna,” she said. Asked if she is still willing to be paired with Ejay Falcon in the future, she said: “Why not? ‘Di ba success ‘yung tandem namin? Of course gusto ko pero wala pa namang ino-offer na para sa aming dalawa.” However, Adarna pointed out that she isn’t keen on doing an action project. “Actually happy ako kung ano [ang ibigay] pero action, hindi ko kaya. Hindi ako pang action but gusto ko drama or comedy,” she said.abs-cbn.com

NDP will help reunite newcomer families, give more support to newcomer and refugee families Today’s NDP will strengthen immigration by restoring the family reunification stream to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), which was cut by the Harper Conservatives, NDP Leader Greg Selinger announced on March 25, 2016. “Families are the heart of our communities,” said Selinger. “The NDP will continue to welcome newcomers, refugees and their families and give them the support they need to succeed, because we’re building a strong, inclusive province where everyone matters.” Manitoba’s NDP government fought hard to keep allowing new Canadians to sponsor their parents or relatives through the MPNP, but the Harper Conservatives forced all provinces to suspend the Family Class stream. “Bringing our parents and loved ones into our homes helps us deepen our roots here in

Manitoba,” said Mohinder Saran, NDP candidate for The Maples. “I’m proud to be part of an NDP team that will support all families, because everyone matters.” Today’s NDP will help people successfully settle in Manitoba by keeping in place the additional $3.5 million in funding to help new refugee families settle and find a safe home here in Manitoba, including Syrian refugees. The NDP would also work with settlement organizations and the federal government to maintain the increased number of refugee placements to Manitoba for years to come. The NDP will also invest another $750,000 in language training for newcomers and new citizens. This will help more newcomers get the language skills they need to get a good job. It will build on the NDP government’s investments in training and bridging programs for interna-

tionally-educated newcomers, so everyone can be successful in the workforce and support their families. “Newcomers make extraordinary cultural and economic contributors to our society and are getting good jobs in our growing province,” said Flor Marcelino, NDP candidate for Logan. “Our NDP government has attracted more than 150,000 immigrants to Manitoba. We’re growing our population by over 16,000 people each year – a stark contrast to the 1990s, when people were leaving our province.”

Jhong Hilario leaves

‘It’s Showtime’ MANILA - Jhong Hilario has left “It’s Showtime.” On Wednesday’s episode of the show, he announced “last day ko na ngayon.” He didn’t mention the reason for leaving the show, but his fans assumed it was due to his candidacy for councilor in Makati under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). “Gusto ko lang magpasalamat sa lahat sa inyo. Direk Bobet [Vidanes], maraming salamat!” he said. “Mami-miss ko kayo,” he added. Jhong was the third host who left the show. First was Coleen Garcia which was due to the series of projects she’s working on. She was followed by Eric “Eruption” Tai who left to focus on his sport. Philstar
