Sanofi to reimburse PH for unused Dengvaxia vials

MANILA - Drug manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur on Monday said it will pay back the Philippine government for the unused doses of dengue vaccine Dengvaxia, which the Department of Health requested. “Our decision to reimburse for unused doses is not related to any safety or quality issue with Dengvaxia. Rather Sanofi Pasteur hopes that this decision will allow us to be able to work more openly and constructively with the DoH to address the negative tone towards the dengue vaccine in the Philippines today,” the French firm said in a statement. “Sanofi Pasteur strongly believes that this tone is due to a misunderstanding of the benefits and risks associated with the dengue vaccine and a lack of awareness amongst the general public, particularly parents of vaccinated children, that the overall benefit of dengue vaccination remains positive in high

Duterte: No poll suspensions, term extensions for charter change

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has allayed fears that efforts to amend the constitution will be used for him to stay in power beyond his term. “There will be no suspension of elections and there will be no term extension especially for me,” the President told MindaNews in an interview last Friday. House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Jr. previously said a “no election” scenario in 2019 is possible because of the need to transition towards a new form of government. He said, however, that talk of extending the President’s term, which is until June 30, 2022, is just a tactic of the political opposition. “The President has clearly said his term will end on or before [2022]... If he needs to resign before 2022 to give way to the new constitution, the new system of government, he is willing to do it,” Alvarez said in Filipino in a radio interview earlier this month. Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has said Duterte’s term may be extended if the new constitution provides for it. Members of the opposition claim that Duterte is using charter change to establish

a dictatorship. But Duterte’s spokesman Harry Roque said a term extension is out of the question, even calling it the “ultimate nightmare” of the President. Unicameral legislature Duterte said he is in favor of a unicameral form of government, believing it would make the passage of laws faster. He also reiterated that he is against the party-list system, saying the system has provided funding to anti-government demonstrations. The party-list system, created to give sectoral groups representation in Congress, is not exclusive to the seven-member Makabayan bloc of lawmakers. Many party-list lawmakers like Jericho Nograles (PBA partylist), Rodante Marcoleta (1Sagip party-list) and Shernee Abubakar Tan (Kusug Tausug party-list) are with the administration bloc. Duterte is also against Alvarez’ proposal to transfer the seat of government to Negros in the Visayas from Manila. “Let’s stick with the traditional. It’s not yet time for us (to transfer the seat of government),” the President said. “It entails money,” he added. Philstar

endemic countries like the Philippines,” it added. Last week, the DOH said it has formally written to Sanofi Pasteur, asking it for a refund of the remaining unused vials of Dengvaxia and to shoulder the cost of tests for the vaccine recipients. The department said it asked for P 1.4 billion from the company. Sanofi Pasteur last year admitted Dengvaxia might cause more severe dengue symptoms if given to those who have not had the mosquito-borne disease before. It then prompted the DOH to halt its immunization program, which was earlier conducted on about 830,000 public school students. Authorities also suspended the sale of Dengvaxia. Lawmakers also launched a legislative inquiry into the matter.-ABS-CBN News

PHL deported over 1,500 foreigners in 2017 - Immigration bureau More than 1,500 foreigners were deported last year for violating Philippine immigration laws, nearly four times higher than those sent back to their home countries in 2016, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Monday. Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said 1,508 foreigners were deported in 2017 for committing acts inimical to the national interest and which posed a risk to public safety, up from only about 400 in 2016. Of the 1,508 foreigners, 232 were wanted for serious crimes in their homelands and who hid in the Philippines to evade prosecution or service of sentence. Immigration offenses of the other deportees included overstaying, working without permit,

being undocumented, and undesirability. Data from the BI legal division show that Chinese nationals topped the list of deportees at 1,248, followed by 115 South Koreans, 33 Indians, 29 Americans, 13 Vietnamese, and 11 Japanese. Majority of the deportees were Chinese nationals arrested in 2016 at the Fontana Hotel in Clark, Pampanga for allegedly engaging in illegal online gaming operations. Morente described the Nov. 24, 2016 Fontana raid as the biggest single mass arrest of foreigners in the bureau’s history wherein some 1,300 Chinese workers were rounded up by joint operatives of the BI and PNP’s special action force. — Virgil Lopez/RSJ, GMA News

The abolition of the Office of the Vice President in the charter change will be eventually up to the people, Malacañang said Monday. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque in a briefing said that the removal of the Vice President’s post in a new form of government is beyond Malacañang’s control. “Now, there’s talk about abolition of the Vice President under Charter change – that’s beyond the control of the Palace. As you know, it is Congress sitting as a constituent assembly that will propose amendments,” he said. “However I’m sure, that because any proposed amendment to the Constitution will be subject to ratification by the people that, ultimately, it is the people who will judge this matter,” he added. Bayan Muna chairperson Neri Colmenares pointed out that there would be no vice president in the draft federal charter proposed by the PDPLaban Federal Institution. “Under the PDP-Laban Constitution, the Office of the Vice President will be abolished by 2019 if they succeed in having the new Constitution ratified during the 2019 elections. Vice President Leni Robredo will be ousted from her office long before her term ends in 2022,” Colmenares said. OVP existing for at least 80 years

Abolition of vice president’s post in new charter beyond Palace control, says Roque

Robredo’s legal adviser, Barry Gutierrez, in a statement said that the OVP has been part of the republic for over 80 years. “The only time since then

that we have had no VP was during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos,” he said. “That said, the current proposals to revise the Constitution are supposedly anchored on a drive to promote and institute a federal system of government. The question therefore is, how does abolishing the OVP relate to the establishment of Federalism? Even the PDP Executive Summary that extensively discusses the need for federalism makes no mention of OVP abolition as a necessary feature. Or is the abolition already in service of some other, unstated, agenda?” Gutierrez added. —NB/ KG, GMA News

Netanyahu in India for first visit by Israeli PM in 15 years Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for the first visit by an Israeli leader to India in 15 years, promising closer ties with the regional power. Netanyahu and his wife Sara were welcomed at the international airport in New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made history in July when he became the first Indian leader to visit Israel. “This visit is an opportunity to enhance cooperation with a global economic, security, technology and tourism power,” Netanyahu said in a statement ahead of his visit. “Indian Prime Minister Modi is a close friend of Israel and of mine.” Modi -- who will accompany Netanyahu for large parts of his five-day tour -- embraced the Israeli prime minister on the tarmac before the pair set off to pay homage at a war memorial in the Indian capital. “Your visit to India is historic and special. It will further cement the close friendship between our nations,” Modi said on Twitter. Netanyahu will be only the second Israeli PM to visit India and the first since Ariel Sharon in 2003. He is accompanied by the largest-ever business delegation to travel with an Israeli leader. Executives in technology, agriculture and defence are among those making the journey as Tel Aviv pursues deals with Asia’s third-largest economy. The build up to Netanyahu’s visit was soured this month when India called off a deal to buy 8,000 anti-tank guided missiles from Israel’s

state-owned defence contractor Rafael. The Indian army and the government are discussing ways to revive the $500 million order, which was scrapped when the country’s own state-run defence contractor offered to build similar missiles locally. Israel is a major weapons supplier to India, exporting an average of $1 billion of military equipment each year, but Modi wants to end India’s status as the world’s top defence importer. Netanyahu and Modi kicked off the visit with a stop at a memorial to Indian soldiers who fought in World War I to help liberate the Israeli city of Haifa. The Israeli leader will later meet with Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj before a private dinner with Modi. AFP News

(UPI) -- A Russian man was arrested after stealing an armored personnel carrier from a secured facility and using it to ran his way into a store to take a bottle of wine. CCTV footage from the store in Apatity shows the man ramming the vehicle, which operates on treads like a tank, into a store’s window before climbing in to take a bottle of wine. The man gets back into the carrier and rams it into the store a second time. Police said the man, who was arrested after abandoning the vehicle in the store, was previously arrested for stealing a truck earlier this month.

Maryland man collects fourth major lottery jackpot Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A Maryland man who collected a $1 million lottery jackpot is no stranger to lottery headquarters -- this was his fourth major win. The 59-year-old New Market man visited Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to collect a $1 million prize from a Win Big scratch-off ticket. The man said he last visited the office in August to collect his third major jackpot and told employees, “I hope to be back here sometime soon!” The winner said his previous jackpots came out to $10,000, $25,000 and $100,000. He said all of the prizes came from scratchoff tickets. “I always say, ‘You don’t throw out the tickets.’ I always check my tickets twice,” he said.

Man aims to break record running Boston Marathon backward (UPI) -- A California runner is training to break a Guinness World Record by running the entirely of the Boston Marathon while facing backward. Loren Zitomersky, an experienced runner, said he is planning to run all 26.2 miles of the Boston Marathon while facing backward in order to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. Zitomersky, whose brother, Brian, died of epilepsy-related causes at the age of 7, said he is also aiming to break a Guinness World Record by finishing the marathon with a time under 3 hours, 43 minutes and 39 seconds. Zitomersky said backward running has caused him a lot of pain in his legs, but it doesn’t compare to the struggles faced by epilepsy patients. “The pain and the struggle that I’m feeling when I’m running backwards is temporary,” he told KABCTV. “For them, they live with this struggle and the difficulties every single day.”

Cryptocurrency rivals snap at Bitcoin’s heels Bitcoin may be the most famous cryptocurrency but, despite a dizzying rise, it’s not the most lucrative one and far from alone in a universe that counts 1,400 rivals, and counting. Dozens of crypto units see the light of day every week, as baffled financial experts look on, and while none can match Bitcoin’s $200-billion euro ($242 bilion) market capitalisation, several have left the media darling’s profitability in the dust. In fact, bitcoin is not even in the top 10 of the crypto world’s best performers. Top of the heap is Ripple which posted a jaw-dropping 36,000 percent rise in 2017 and early this year broke through the 100-billion euro capitalization mark, matching the value of blue-chip companies such as, say, global cosmetics giant L’Oreal. “Its value shot up when a newspaper said that around 100 financial institutions were going to adopt their system,” said Alexandre Stachtchenko, cofounder of specialist consulting group Blockchain Partners. Using Ripple’s technology framework, however, is not the same as adopting the currency itself, and so the Ripple’s rise should be considered as “purely speculative”, according to Alexandre David, founder of sector specialist Eureka Certification. Others point out that Ripple’s market penetration is paper-thin as only 15 people hold between 60 and 80 percent of existing Ripples, among them co-founder Chris Larsen. They can’t be best at everything But it still got him a moment of fame when, according to Forbes magazine, Larsen briefly stole Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s spot as the fifthwealthiest person in the US at the start of the year. Ether is another rising star, based on the Ethereum protocol created in 2009 by a 19-year

old programmer and seen by some specialists as a promising approach. Around 40 virtual currencies have now gone past the billion-euro mark in terms of capitalisation, up from seven just six months ago. The Cardano cryptocurrency’s combined value even hit 15 billion euros only three months after its creation. In efforts to stand out from the crowd, virtual currency founders often concentrate on the security of their systems, such as Cardano, which has made a major selling point of its system’s safety features. Others work on connected devices so “machines understand each other and are able to send each other value units, money, without going through a person or centralized third party”, Stachtchenko said. Some, like Monero, focus on guaranteeing anonymity, and others on share and bond issues, or on speeding up the confirmation time for transactions, like Litecoin. “It is impossible for a cryptocurrency to be the best at all the various tasks,” said Stachtchenko said. Meanwhile financiers, established banks and regulators keep issuing stern warnings to the investment community to stay clear of cryptocurrencies. Legendary investor Warren Buffett said that cryptocurrencies would “come to a bad ending” and that he would never stake money on them. The South Korean government said it was working on a bill to ban cryptocurrency trading, but then backtracked. Analysts meanwhile predict that roller-coaster ride of virtual currencies is set to carry on. “When Wall Street bonuses hit bank accounts on January 15, I imagine we’ll see a crypto buying spree of epic proportions” said Meltem Demirors, director of the Digital Currency Group, which invests in crypto businesses. —Agence France-Presse

Firms from Japan, Korea, Male sex robots will go on Taiwan keen to be third sale this year - and they’ll telco: Andanar have ‘bionic penises’ MANILA - Big Japanese, Taiwanese and Korean companies are interested in becoming the third telecommunications player in the Philippines, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Sunday. The Department of Information and Communications Technology last week said 32 firms were eligible to become the challenger to PLDT Inc and Globe Telecom. Among these firms are KDDI Corp of Japan, South Korea’s LG Uplus and an unnamed Taiwanese firm, said Andanar. The government, however, was not interested in working for a fourth telco to enter the market, he said. “We have to take into consideration the size of the Philippine market,” Andanar told DZMM radio.

“Palagay ko hanggang third player lang eh, para maging at least lucrative yung merkado ng Pilipinas for these telcos.” (I think a third player is enough, so that at least the Philippine market remains lucrative for these telcos.) He said the government expects interested companies to finish submitting their terms of reference by February 19, with the open bidding to begin by March. China Telecom and Philippine Telegraph & Telephone Corp have both expressed interest in setting up the third player, according to Malacañang. PLDT and Globe Telecom continue to dominate industry after San Miguel Corp backed out last year and sold its telecommunications assets to the 2 players. ABS-CBN News

Many women might have imagined that the sex robot craze would be a male thing – and no right-thinking female would choose a plastic doll for a lover. But the creators of a popular sex robot for men are now working on a version for women – a stereotypically hunky plastic man who looks a little like Action Man. The plastic creature will ship this year and will offer a ‘bionic penis’, its creators have promised, working via a paired smartphone app. Matt McMullen of RealDoll said that the company’s currently tweaking the sexbot’s voice and personality – and says that users will be able to choose any penis size that suits them. ‘We’re working on a male version of the robot AI,’ McMullen told the Daily Star. ‘We’ll eventually have a male and a female platform available.’ David Levy, author of Love and Sex With Robots, told Yahoo News, ‘I feel certain that eventually women will be turned on at least as men by sex robots. ‘The huge sales of vibrators prove that women in general are very happy to achieve orgasm by way of electronics.’

MANILA, Philippines - Max Collins is happy to take on her new role as wife to Pancho Magno after the two exchanged vows in an intimate yet romantic Christian wedding last Dec. 11 at the Marriott Hotel, capping a romance that started in 2013. These days, Max is visibly delighted at having someone by her side all the time. “Right now, I’m going through adjustments since after the wedding we spent Christmas and New Year together so ang saya, the feeling is different when you have a bigger family,” she said after the grand launch of GMA 7’s The One That Got Away (TOTGA) which she shares topbilling roles with Lovi Poe, Rhian Ramos and Dennis Trillo. The sexy romantic comedy series airs weeknights beginning Jan. 15. “No honeymoon yet,” she revealed. “We became so busy due to the holidays and we put priority on spending time with the family over the honeymoon.” Max is certain it will definitely take place right after they have finished tapings for their respective shows. Lest we forget, Pancho stars in the afternoon drama series Haplos. “Once we take a break, we want it to be long like a month for our honeymoon,” Max giggled and continued, “We’re planning to go to Italy, Greece and Spain; parang Europe trip and we’re dreaming of going around just by train.” Is there a plan to have a baby pronto? “Kung may mabubuo ba (laughs)? Oh well, no one can tell. Only time will tell but not this year, maybe next year or the year after the next because we still want to save up that’s why our priority at this time is our work.” Speaking of work, Max admitted that she had a hard time preparing for her character as Darcy Sibuyan in TOTGA, knowing that it requires her to stay slim and fit alongside Lovi’s Alex Makalintal and Rhian’s Zoe Velasquez. The series tells the story of three independent women who all had a romantic past with Liam (Dennis). They meet and eventually become friends only to find out later that each of them is wishing to end up at the altar with the same man — Liam. What comes next are exciting scenes where televiewers will be eager to know if the ladies can set their personal differences aside and fight for love fairly. “It was really tough for me when I first accepted the role because I kept thinking about the abs of Lovi and Rhian. I told myself I need to be like them, kailangan kong humabol because both are so sexy. They are workout buffs which I am not so I really had to prepare earlier. But the whole sexy thing (in the show) is more, well it’s more of a comedy really so the sexy scenes are like pa-cute lang; very light and the three of us are just enjoying our chemistry that whenever there are sexy scenes, ginagawa

lang namin fun, pakilig.” Max said even Pancho didn’t see any problem with her sexy role. “We did talk about it and we compromised regarding our work but of course, I know what is acceptable and unacceptable. Same with his case so really it’s more of a compromise that we have to understand each other’s work.” Asked if her being married limits her from playing other roles, Max believed that her new status has opened different doors of opportunities. She explained, “To be realistic, I guess it does limit but that’s because we put a label that limits us so really in any field naman it’s up to your choices or priorities and the way that you handle your career because of course, when the baby comes, projects become limited because you’ll get busy taking care of the baby. Being married is really about having different opportunities like you can be seen as a stronger woman and you can deal with more mature problems that a lot of other married women can relate to. So, I think you just open yourself to a wider audience. It’s kind of having a different dynamic when you get married.” The change in status also drives her to becoming a better version of herself. Gone are the days when she only thinks of her welfare. “It’s really different because now I have to think not only of myself but also my husband like if he’s doing okay. I also wonder if he already had his dinner like now Pancho is sick. Nakakaawa lang kasi di ko siya maalagaan since I’m at work; ‘yun talaga ang mga differences and I guess, now I’m less selfish dahil may partner na ‘ko and I became more patient and loving.” With Max and Pancho now living under one roof, the 25-year-old Kapuso star would like to make one thing clear so as to stop tongues from wagging about Pancho’s recent transfer to her place. She stressed that it was a practical thing to do since she already has her own house. “We talked about it. I requested that we stay in my place. I’m still paying for my townhouse so he’s going to help me pay it out. Then, eventually we will transfer to a bigger one after saving up for our dream house. It would be a waste (of money) if he’s going to buy a new one. We’d rather save up for our dream house.” As soon as they have transferred all of Pancho’s stuff, Max shared that they are planning to renovate the kitchen and do some changes in the interiors. “We wanted the kitchen bigger and more comfortable to cooking. He is used to cooking more than I do so I need to learn. I guess, I’ll enjoy the process. We will be doing (household) chores together because we want to start out just the two of us,” she concluded.-Bot

Aljur Abrenica talks about his special discoveries as a first-time father

Aljur Abrenica and Kylie Padilla are very particular about their division of labor in their household. Aljur reveals that being a father has allowed him to become more hands-on in doing household chores. As a father to his son Alas Joaquin with his fiancée Kylie Padilla, Aljur shared, during an interview at the grand press conference of his upcoming

soap Asintado, that he now understands his father better. “Kasi kadalasan hindi ko siya maintindihan noon eh. Medyo nagka-clash kami eh. Pero kapag nagkaanak ka na, lahat pala ng pinanggagalingan ng tatay, bali-baliktarin mo eh makakabuti para sayo,” he said, even adding that his father is his role model. Although the new Kapamilya hunk is busy taping, he shocked

the press by sharing that he and Kylie still make it a point to do their chores at home. “Kasi kami ni Kylie kaming dalawa lang talaga sa bahay, wala kaming kasama. Pinaguusapan na namin ngayon kumuha kasi nama-master na namin ang bahay,” he said. “Kasi gusto mung namin mamaster lahat ng chores, laundry at paglilinis. Tsaka ayaw muna namin ng ibang tao sa bahay

para makapag-focus kami sa bata.” He even gamely enumerated his share of household chores, which includes taking out the trash and looking after Alas while Kylie is resting. During taping days, he shared that Kylie would often seek the help of her Tita Mariel Rodriguez—her father Robin Padilla’s wife—or Aljur’s mother.

What’s the hardest part of being a father so far? “Ang pinakamahirap siguro sa akin ay yung hindi ko siya mapatahan sa pag-iyak. Kasi nasa 5th [month] na siya and nag-teething na and painful sa bata yun eh. So kahit anong comfort ang ibigay mo iyak lang siya ng iyak,” Aljur said. Despite the many challenges of being a father, Aljur proudly shared that he has also discovered a bunch of new skills since Alas came along. “Marunong pala akong magalaga at humawak ng bata. Kasi hindi ako humahawak ng bata eh kasi nakakatakot. Magpatawa ng bata kasi ako yung playtime eh, lagi,” he said. Though they are both handson parents to their son, Aljur makes sure that he still makes time for Kylie. “As much as possible kailangan maging sensitive ka all the time kasi hindi rin siya magsasabi eh kapag pagod na siya. You have to be sensitive about it. And maging spontaneous pa rin,” he said. According to him, they do make time to go on quick dates just to be able to spend time together. “Tipong andiyan yung kapatid ko tapos iiwan ko muna si Alas ‘Oh mahal take out muna tayo.’ Kahit mga 15 to 20 minutes kami na kaming dalawa lang ang nasa labas, it makes a big difference sa kanya,” he ended.-BY MAUREEN MARIE BELMONTE

Lottery system is the better option Until I am convinced of a better way that would insure a higher sense of fairness based on the huge demand, I truly believe the draw system is the way to go.

Let me start with sharing what I read: “The Liberal government has relaunched a lottery system to reunite immigrant families, despite a backlash from frustrated sponsors who called its random selection process “cruel”, “heartless” and a “fiasco.”

huge backlog and processing times of sponsoring a parent. For example, back in 2010 if you sponsored a parent from the Philippines you could expect to wait seven or more years for him or her to be processed. The backlog was over 100,000 people in queue and the Government was only prepared to accept a fraction of those in any given year.

I disagree with the words used to describe the changes and knowing that the Filipino community is one of the primary communities that uses the program, it would be good to provide an explanation of the program. Back in 2011, I represented the Liberal Party of Canada on the issues facing immigration. Back then, one of the most controversial issues was the

The processing times were being predicted to continue to grow in the years ahead as more and more people were sponsoring parents and grandparents. Something needed to be done. In late 2011, the Harper Government ended up shutting down the program which meant you could no longer sponsor a

Straight up (www.mpkevin.ca) parent. Back then, I criticized the Government for shutting down the program. I argued that the decision was just wrong and unnecessary. The program was opened again in 2014 but the Government of Canada announced some changes to the program and that it would only accept 5,000 applicants. Those applicants were to be accepted on a first-come basis. At that time, I was glad the program was reopened again. But the idea of applications being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis was wrong. lamoureux, 22

fter rejoining the war on drugs, the Philippine National Police is set to relaunch this month its Oplan Tokhang. The controversial anti-drug campaign has seen thousands of drug personalities killed since 2016, with PNP officials admitting that there were cases of mistaken identity and police abuses. It is the second time that the PNP is rejoining the war on drugs. It was pulled out of the campaign following the gruesome execution of South Korean business executive Jee Ick-joo on Oct. 18, 2016 by members of the Anti-Illegal Drugs Group right inside PNP headquarters at Camp Crame. The AIDG was dissolved, but the PNP eventually revived its bloody campaign, dubbing it Double Barrel Reloaded.

With the PNP rejoining the campaign, national police chief Ronald dela Rosa has vowed that the relaunch will adhere to the original concept of tokhang, under which police will knock on private homes and “plead” with drug personalities to surrender.

these keys to open the doors of opportunity that God places before you. A - Accept responsibility for my life. Accepting responsibility for one’s life is not popular concept in our society, because we live in a culture that embraces a concept called “political correctness”. This basically says, “None of your problems are your fault. Everything bad in your life is somebody else’s fault. Blame the environment. Blame the educator. Blame your parents. Blame anybody else, but it’s not your fault.” We will never be a success in life and we will never make our lives count if

‘Tokhang’ relaunched, again

Double Barrel was muzzled and the PNP was again pulled out of the war last year following a string of killings of teenagers believed to have been summarily executed. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency was then given the lead in fighting the drug menace. The law in fact specifically tasks the PDEA to be the lead agency in the campaign against illegal drugs, with the PNP and other law enforcement groups providing support.

Living Hope we have the attitude that it’s someone else’s fault. We must accept responsibility for our own lives. Galatians 6:5 “Each person must be responsible for himself.” Here is the truth of this scripture. I am responsible for my own life, whether I like it or not. All of us here this morning face two kinds of circumstances. Those circumstances which we have no control over.

For many the last part of that verse describes them. “A fool starts off in many directions.” Does that describe you? You start your year off in haste going in to many different directions at one time with no plan of action. Then notice the words at the beginning of this verse: “An Intelligent person aims at wise actions”. That means they have a goal, an objective, an aim, at target.

There are certain things that are going to happen regardless of what you do and how you plan your year.

N January 7, I was reading a story on CBC’s website and the following comment got me thinking about what people really thought about a change that the Trudeau Government made shortly after forming Government. It was a change that I supported and still do but I am interested in your opinion on the issue.

In the previous campaign, witnesses in several cases said there was no pleading. Instead cops simply barged into homes and dragged out suspects, a number of whom were shot dead after allegedly resisting arrest. When those killed included teenagers, surveys showed public support for the war plummeting. President Duterte has made it clear that he intends to make good on his campaign promise of eradicating or at least making a significant dent against the drug menace. The public generally supports any anti-drug campaign, but there are no quick fixes to this complex problem. Greater zeal is needed to stop large-scale smuggling of drugs from countries such as China. Equal attention must be given to the social and public health dimensions of the problem and the need to give drug abusers a second chance. Since the start of this administration, egregious abuses and mistakes have been committed in waging the war on drugs. In relaunching Oplan Tokhang, there is no excuse for repeating those abuses and mistakes.Philstar

Income inequality and violence

C

AN income inequality be reduced? Thousands of years of history seems to indicate that only violence and catastrophes can seriously decrease income inequality. Inequality never dies peacefully. Inequality declines when carnage and disaster strikes and income inequality increases when peace and stability return. Walter Scheidel has written the first book “...to chart the crucial role of violent shocks in reducing income inequality over the full sweep of human history around the world.” The book is The Great Leveler: Violence and the History of Inequality from the Stone Age to the 21st Century published by the Princeton University Press 2017. It is one of those in the Best Books list by several publications including the Economist. According to Scheidel, ever since human beings began to farm, herd livestock, and pass on their assets to future generations, economic inequality has been a defining feature of civilization. Over thousands of years, only violent events have significantly lessened inequality. The “Four Horsemen” of levelling – mass mobilization, warfare, transformative revolution, state collapse, and catastrophic plague – have repeatedly destroyed the fortunes of the rich. In developing countries, income inequality increases

In developing countries, income inequality increases the likelihood of internal conflict and civil wars. the likelihood of internal conflict and civil wars. Violence might destroy states altogether. Scheidel points out that state failure or systems collapse is one of the four major causes of income leveling. For most of history, the rich were positioned either at or near the top of the political power hierarchy or were connected to those who were. Moreover, states provided a measure of protection, however modest by modern standards, for economic activity beyond the subsistence level. When states unravelled, these positions, connections and protection came under pressure or were altogether lost. Although everybody might suffer when states unravelled the rich simply had much more to lose: declining or collapsing elite income and wealth compressed the overall distribution of resources. Scheidel writes that this has happened as long as there have been states. Globalization and inequality There has been a lot of debate whether globalization is good or bad for the world economy. Here is what Scheidel writes in his book about globalization. “Globalization is generally

regarded as a potent disequalizing force. Its waxing and waning has long been associated with swings in inequality. Whereas the first wave of globalization in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century concluded with rising or stable (and high) inequality – not only in the West but also in Latin America and Japan – fell during the hiatus from 1914 to the 1940s which had been induced by war and the Great Depression. A survey of trends in some 80 countries between 1970 and 2005 found that freedom of international trade and economic deregulation significantly raised inequality. Although globalization generally favors economic growth, elites tend to benefit disproportionately in both developed and developing countries. There are several reasons for this imbalance.” Scheidel points out two reasons. The number of workers in the global economy has doubled due primarily to China’s embrace of capitalism, India’s market reforms and the collapse of the Soviet bloc. Capital has failed to increase at the same rate and the proportion of skilled labor in the global workforce declined thus widening inequality in rich countries.

Elfren S. Cruz

BREAKTHROUGH Globalization also intensified competition, financial liberalization and the removal of obstacles to the flow of capital which encouraged fiscal reforms and economic deregulation. As a result globalization shifts taxation from corporate and personal to expenditure taxes which tend to be associated with a less equal distribution of after tax income. Markets and power Scheidel’s book has many disturbing historical conclusions. He says: “I was able to trace the concentration of resources in the hands of the few to two principal factors: economic development and predatory behavior by those powerful enough to appropriate wealth well in excess of what their activities might earn them in competitive markets – what economist call rents. Elite families have not only gained a disproportionate share of markets; but, they have also

begun to control markets and lessened competition. It will be extremely difficult, especially for democracies to meet the challenges of rising inequality. This will require massive redistribution of wealth. But if the world does not meet these challenges, the alternative will be continuous and ever increasing conflict and violence. Mario Lopez Before I end my column, I want to pay tribute to a Filipino patriot, educator and a very good friend who passed away a week ago. Professor Mario Lopez was my classmate at the Asian Institute of Management and we became lifelong friends. He had a passion for his family, his country and for education. He was the youngest faculty member of the Asian Institute of Management; and, he was a prolific seminar speaker and writer. He shared his three year or so battle with cancer on social cancer which served as an inspiration to many other people suffering from affliction. He never allowed his sickness to diminish his love for education and his faith in God and his country. It was a joy and a privilege to have known Mayo, as we fondly called him. I know that he is resting in peace with the Lord and he will continue to pray for all those who he passionately devoted his life to serving. Philstar

Filipinos’ aspirations

N

oteworthy indeed is the nationwide trust and approval ratings of President Duterte that remained high in the last quarter of 2017 with a score of 82 percent and 80 percent respectively. Going into his third year in office, the ratings are quite impressive indeed compared to the ratings of the past presidents. Doubts however still linger as to whether these ratings accurately reflect the over-all sentiments of our people especially because said figures were obtained only through the face to face interviews of 1200 adults, 18 years old and above. Is it really accurate to say that 82 percent of the people, 18 years and above trust him? Or that 80 percent approve of his performance as President? These questions keep on surfacing especially among those who cannot understand and accept how 1200 adult Filipinos could reflect the sentiments of a population numbering over 100 million people. And even granting that this method is really scientific enough as to accurately show the peoples’ high trust and approval of PRRD, anxiety and uncertainty still prevails among most Filipinos regarding the future of our country. Filipinos are still anxious and unsure particularly on the possibility that the 2019 elections will not take place. This possibility has been repeatedly

floating supposedly because of a Charter change (“Cha-cha”) converting our unitary and presidential form of government with a bicameral Congress, into a federal government with a unicameral legislature. The scenario being floated right now is that Congress will constitute itself into a constituent assembly for purposes of amending our Constitution that will pass said changes. So it is possible that come 2019 which is the scheduled election for local officials and members of Congress, no election will take place because the process of changing our Constitution may not be finished yet. Or even if the Cha-cha is already done by 2019, holding an election under a new form of government by that time may already be too late. Obviously, No-El is the best

Filipinos are still anxious and unsure particularly on the possibility that the 2019 elections will not take place. way to railroad the Cha-cha” because members of Congress will definitely prefer an extension of their terms which under the present Constitution are six years for Senators and three years for Congressmen (Sections 4 and 7, Article VI) that will expire in 2019 for some Senators and for all Congressmen. The peoples’ anxiety was aroused here because for almost two years, Congress has not taken any steps to constitute itself into a constituent assembly for the purpose of converting our government into federalism despite the fact that this is one of Duterte’s campaign platforms that clinched his victory in the 2016 election. So it would appear that no-el and the term extension has been really planned and manipulated. And this anxiety is heightened even more because of Duterte’s ambivalence and double talk on some issues specifically on his term of office. Several times he has threatened to resign under certain conditions. But he has not made good such threats even if the conditions appear to have occurred. Then he has repeatedly vowed to step down upon the expiration of his term and even considers it as an “ultimate nightmare.” Yet he has not stopped his henchmen

in floating the idea that if the federal system will be adopted, he may continue to serve as our leader under such system. More dangerous to our democracy at this stage is the possibility of a return to a Marcos style of authoritarianism that eventually ended up in over 20 years of dictatorial regime under martial law. This possibility cannot be totally discounted because of some developments and movements somehow indicating that we are headed toward that direction. First of all, is the extension of martial law in Mindanao for one more year even if Duterte himself has declared that Marawi City has been liberated and that the invasion and rebellion of the Abu Sayyaf-Maute terrorists group have been suppressed. Apparently the reason for declaring martial law in that part of the country and even in Marawi City pursuant to our Constitution has ceased to exist. So extending martial law in Mindanao appears to be questionable. In fact some groups have even filed a petition in the Supreme Court questioning such extension and the SC has given due course to said petitions. This extension of martial law in Mindanao has somehow

aroused fears among Filipinos that said extension may not only involve the term but also the territory so as to eventually the entire country will be placed under martial law. Secondly, there is apparently a creeping militarization of our government which nobody or only a few has noticed. In fact, no one has raised it yet, but it is quite obvious that this administration has been filling up positions in our civilian government with military men whether retired or still in service who are asked to retire earlier. This is a move which can be interpreted as steps to win the support of the military so that in the event martial law is declared, the military will fully cooperate. Indeed the militarization of our government is an indication that martial law already exists in our country, in fact if not in law. Even then, Filipinos still have strong faith and high hope that these scenarios are not true, and that this administration is really sincere and will help in fulfilling the aspirations of all Filipinos set forth in the Preamble of our Constitution, to “promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony and secure to ourselves and to our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality and peace.”Philstar

ATTENTION

Marvel is looking for more ‘artistic talent’ from PHL

As part of a push to grow its Asia fanbase, the Disney-owned Marvel franchise is searching for artistic talent in the Philippines, a company official said. “We have been making great strides especially in Asia. We try to hire more Asian creators, writers and artists to bring a piece of their culture to Marvel comics,” Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski said in Manila where he visited a major university for fresh talent. Still part of the comic book giant’s efforts to make a major thrust into Asia, Chinese superheroes will also soon be joining

the pantheon of larger-thanlife Marvel universe mainstays Spider-Man, Iron Man and the X-Men. The comic giant plans to introduce two new Chinese superheroes: “Sword Master” and “Aero” who will be based in China, Cebulski added. “They are going to be heavily based on Chinese culture and Chinese mythology but set in the modern world and they will interact with the other heroes (in the Marvel universe),” he said. These new characters will be drawn in the ‘manga’ style

of Japanese comics that is more popular in Asia, he added. Cebulski, who has lived the last two years in Asia, serving as Marvel’s vice president for the region, conceded that Marvel had not given Asian characters prominent positions in the past compared to mainstays like Captain America or the Hulk. But this is changing, he said. “We want to have stories that are reflective of every culture.” Marvel has already released mobile games in China, and opened “Marvel Stores” in

South Korea. There is huge fan expectation over Marvel’s latest flagship movie — Black Panther — which will be released worldwide next month. The film stars Chadwick Boseman playing Marvel’s breakthrough black superhero T’Challa, a king of a fictional African nation who first featured in the company’s comic books in the late 1960s. Luke Cage, another popular black Marvel superhero, has also had a recent revival through a popular TV series on Netflix.

But Asian superheroes are still comparatively rare in the Marvel universe despite the franchise’s growing popularity there. In the Philippines, a former US colony, Marvel is already deeply ingrained in the nation’s popular culture, said Cebulski. Filipino illustrators in turn have also provided art for Marvel comics since the 1970s. People from the Southeast Asian nation are now the third largest nationality of artists employed by Marvel, just behind Americans and Italians, Cebulski said. — Agence France-Presse

Five groundbreaking automotive inventions to be thankful for There is so much interesting new technology inside cars these days that it’s easy to overlook the importance of older technology and how it has formed the foundation for today’s motoring convenience and safety. As we move on to a new year, let us also look back at the oftforgotten and underappreciated tech in today’s cars. Not an exhaustive list by any measure, but feel free to go through it, and take the time to appreciate what you’ve got in your ride!

1) Push-button start. Cars have sure come a long way since the days when you literally had to crank the engine to life. Pushing a button to start a car used to be the stuff of science fiction, before it made its way into expensive and luxurious supercars. These days, even some affordable mass-market models come with it as an option. It’s not just convenient, but it still feels cool and space age for many motorists. 2) Fuel injection. I know that members of the Church of the Carburetor won’t like this much, but

the onset of fuel injection (from mechanical to electrical) in modern engines paved the way for better fuel economy, cleaner emissions, a wider range of tuning possibilities, and a simpler way to maintain your car. These days, electronic fuel injection has become such the norm that people don’t realize just how good they have it. Just Google a list of common carburetor issues and you’ll be thankful the computer in your engine is doing all the thinking. Keep you fuel injection system in top shape by following your manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and you’ll be happily puttering along. 3) Smartphone c o n n e c t i v i t y. Back in the ‘90s, your friends thought you were cool when you had one of those cassette adaptors that allowed you to play your Discman through your car’s radio. After that, you hoped that your car’s audio system came with an auxiliary port. These days, Bluetooth connectivity is almost standard, allowing you to play your Spotify playlist sans the hassle of tangled wires. No matter what car you drive, you can just pass your phone down to the people in the back to play DJ. 4) A n t i-lo c k braking systems/

disc brakes. Ever got into a hairy driving experience that required you to stomp on the brakes? Ever locked your brakes up and lost the ability to steer away from trouble? Modern ABS allows brakes to operate at maximum efficiency, at a point just shy of locking up the wheels. This allows the tire to continue rolling along and maintain contact with A/C constantly when the weather changes. With the widespread availability of automatic aircon nowadays though, all the guesswork thinking is done for you. If more sunlight hits your cabin, your car adjusts the temperature and fan speed accordingly.

the road, thus providing traction and steering ability. 5) Au to m at i c air-conditioning. It might sound like a first-world problem, but it’s a real hassle having to toggle your

January 16-31, 2018 n www.angperyodiko.ca At 24, Nadine Lustre is one confident young woman not bound by expectations and stereotypes. A singer before she rose to fame as an actress via the 2014 romantic comedy movie Diary ng Panget, she is not afraid to speak her mind (Come on, guys, she noted, “It’s 2017 and…” Isn’t there really anything wrong with living-in?). She follows her passions with fervor, and follows her heart without fear. But not many people know that Nadine used to be insecure about herself. She used to sweat the small stuff, worrying about the things she had no control over. She admitted to being a people pleaser, who would do anything and everything just to gain the approval of the public, including her bashers. “With my line of work as a celebrity, sometimes sa isip namin na ‘Oh shoot, we have to please everyone, you have to make everyone happy,’ ganyan, ganyan,” she said. Those days are over, bless her! Ever since she realized that the only ones she needed to please were herself and the people that truly matter in her life, Nadine has stopped worrying about what others would think and say about her. “With me kasi, I only want to please people who really believe in me, who really accept me for who I am. It’s about being able to show everyone kung sino talaga ako and not being afraid na ma-judge ako. Or na may masabing masama sa akin ’yung mga tao.” Nadine is considered by leading hair care brand Cream Silk as one of its seven Modern Filipinas who worked hard to transform into the best version of herself. “If you learn to conquer your doubts and fears, good things would come into your life. Be yourself and then conquer your fears,” advised Nadine. “That’s how I found myself and stopped thinking about what other people would think, stopped thinking about being scared. When I stopped thinking about these things, du’n ko mas nakilala ’yung sarili ko. From time to time, I would still encounter people who would tell me that I am not good enough. But you know what, it doesn’t hurt me anymore.” What kind of diet do you follow? “None. I don’t really deprive myself of the food that I want to eat. I think the secret is you just take everything in moderation. The more you deprive yourself of, say, a certain dessert, the more you crave for it.” What’s usually for breakfast, lunch and dinner? “I always like to have a hearty Pinoy breakfast, especially since breakfast, as they say, is the most important meal of the day. For lunch, I would eat whatever I feel like eating. For dinner, I’d go for steak. Nothing beats a good steak to cap off a busy day.” Any snacks between meals? “If I don’t like to feel heavy, I’d have some salad or a sandwich. Salad kasi would make you feel full but not heavy. For me, it’s the perfect meal to stave off hunger pangs in between big meals. Plus, it’s easy to pack and eat whenever I have location shoots.” What workout do you do? “Since I don’t follow a strict diet, bumabawi ako sa workout. During my spare time, I do boxing, cardio, weight-lifting and TRX, which helps improve my core, balance, flexibility and strength. TRX is an intense workout, but you only use your body weight in doing several exercises. Plus, you don’t have to go to the gym because you can do TRX anywhere.” Any other part of your body that needs improvement? “Siguro more on toning na lang. I don’t intend to bulk up or have super big muscles. I want leaner arms, stronger legs.” What part of your body is most vulnerable? “I think arms. That’s why I love doing TRX because it’s a combination of cardio and strength training. It also allows me to do exercises meant to strengthen the arms. Plus, TRX has upper-body exercises that help make the arms look a lot sexier.” What part of your body is your favorite? “My legs. I read somewhere that the legs are the sexiest part of a woman’s body. And I agree. There’s something sensual about a pair of shapely, well-defined legs. And I would like to believe that my legs are sexy, too. Hahahaha.!!!” What part of your boyfriend James Reid’s body is your favorite? “Every part!” Any health regimen that you follow? “Like I said, I don’t stick to any form of diet. Yes, I do get to relish food items that health buffs would usually avoid, but I also watch what I eat. One can’t have too much of anything. Kasi at some point, if you’re careless, these sinful food would take a toll on your health.”

Nadine beautifully

transformed

Favorite food? “Steak. The steak kasi is a good source of protein, especially when I’m trying to cut back on carbs and trying to lose weight. It can help you feel full. But you have to watch out which cuts you’re getting because some cuts are very high in fat and calories. I eat it in moderation lang.”

How much sleep do you get per night? “As much as possible, I try to get seven to eight hours of sleep. Sleep is important because it helps me recharge after a super- busy day and it allows my muscles to rest and recover after doing intense exercises.” Favorite sleepwear? “Nighties. They’re comfy and they allow my skin to breathe.” Do you snore? “No.”

Do you talk in your sleep? “Yes. Di ko lang alam kung ano ang sinasabi ko. Hahahaha!!!” How many pillows do you sleep with? “Plenty. Para kahit aling side ako matulog, may pillows na nakapalibot sa akin. Aside from the comfort, the pillows give me the right amount of support and keep me comfortable at night.” Last thing that you do before you go to sleep? “Check my phone. Sometimes, I would browse Instagram because I like looking at beautiful photos. I also check my messages. It has become a nightly habit for me to check my schedule for the next day before shutting my eyes.” And the first thing that you do as soon as you wake up? “Wash my face and brush my teeth.” How do you cope with stress? “When the demands and stresses of showbiz get a little too much for me, I would book a ticket and travel. Kahit maiksi lang. Traveling helps me take my mind off of showbiz. It helps me clear my head and put things into proper perspective again. Traveling keeps me sane. Hahahaha!!!” Favorite city? “Tokyo. There’s something about the cosmopolitan city that fascinates me. I love their food, their culture, their people, their weather! Since I also love photography, Tokyo has a lot of interesting places that inspire me to take out my camera and just snap away.” Aside from James, three other men that you find sexy/attractive? “Tom Hardy, Chris Pratt and Chris Pine.” Using only body language, how would you make a guy know that you admire him? “None. If a guy is good at reading women, I don’t have to do anything extra.” -FUNFARE/Ricky Lo

Film review: Ferdinand; A heartwarming

tale about courage & compassion

Panda in Kung Fu Panda and a brave cub in The Lion King. This time, a giant but gentle bull gets into the spotlight in Ferdinand. He’s not a stereotypical fighting bull he was born to be, but a lovable one. While other bulls work their way to be an ultimate prized figure in the ring, Ferdinand opts to stay out

of trouble. His size and appearance can be initially intimidating, yet Ferdinand can be unexpectedly the gentle giant around. He loves flowers at Casa del Toro, the farm he grew up in but eventually leaves when his dad dies. He ends up in another farm where a young girl, Nina,

treats him more like a friendly pet and allows him to move around freely, his size notwithstanding. Based on the 1936 children’s classic, The Story of Ferdinand, the animated film came to life more than 80 long years after the story was first published. Set in Madrid, Spain, Ferdi-

nand is a heartwarming tale about courage, compassion and friendship that can make young viewers easily adapt to the flow of the story and even adults relate. Expected in most animated films, this one has a coterie of other animals that give life to the story. Ferdinand is voiced by hunky actor and wrestling superstar John Cena, who surprisingly provides an ideal balance between his character’s gentleness and strength. Kate McKinnon plays the kind goat Lupe, who becomes Ferdinand’s ally in the farm. He was inevitably forced to reunite with his bull friends, like the bossy Valiente (Bobby Cannavale) and the charming Guapo (football star Peyton Manning). Three adorable and singing hedgehogs — Una (Gina Rodriguez), Dos (Daveed Diggs) and Cuatro (Gabriel Iglesias) — who are consistent food culprits at Casa del Toro, befriend Ferdinand. If you’re looking for Tres, the three other hedgehogs

are tightlipped about him. Yet, Tres is alive and surprisingly appears at the end of the film. Meanwhile, the girl Nina is voiced by Julia Saldanha and Lily Day. Brazilian director Carlos Saldanha, who worked at the helm of animated films, Ice Age series and Rio and its sequel, megs Ferdinand. Directing an animated children’s story is nothing new to this director, but he obviously brought a different and entertaining dimension to this new tale about a darling bull. Nick Jonas, the youngest of the Jonas Brothers, recorded the song Home, played within the movie in a heartwarming montage while Ferdinand was growing up and also in the end credits. Home banners the soundtrack of Ferdinand and was released as the promotional single of the animated film, along with another Nick Jonas song, Watch Me. Home was even nominated Best Song in the recent Golden Globe awards. Philstar

Maxene Magalona honors Francis M in beach wedding

MANILA, Philippines — Nearly a decade after the death of late rap master Francis Magalona, his daughter Maxene Magalona has tied the knot with model-musician Robby Mananquil in a beach wedding in Shangri-La Boracay on January 11. Despite her father’s absence, Maxene made sure to still pay tribute to him by attaching a picture of the late rapper in a locket in her wedding bouquet, styled by renowned event stylist Teddy Manuel. “Simple yet meaningful bridal bouquet today for @maxenemagalona. A touch of a locket makes a touching sentiment to share and remember her father on her wedding day,” Manuel, in an Instagram post, said of the concept behind the bouquet. Saab, Maxene’s sister, also had a locket like that when she got married in 2015. She, however, was unable to attend her sister’s wedding since she is expecting twins and was forbidden by her doctor to travel. “Today my maid-of-honor gets married and, as her matron-of-honor, I’m so sad that I can’t be with her physically,” Saab said in an Instagram post. “I really wish I could be there, but with her big and selfless heart, she told me not to worry about it because the safety of my babies is what’s most important. I love you, @maxenemagalona, and I am currently crying buckets from Manila,” said Saab. Saab still wore her matron-ofhonor gown even if she stayed at home during Maxene’s wedding. Netizens were also touched when Maxene chose her late dad’s hit, “Girl Be Mine,” as her bridal march song. “It’s so romantic,” some netizens commented on Twitter. Maxene met Robby through his band, Pulso, which plays with the band of her sister Saab in events. Maxene recalled that one day, Robby just sent her a message online, and from there, they started to connect and fall in love. “I will love you for a hundred years and more. Because a lifetime is not enough,” the two were quoted as saying as vows in their wedding, attended by celebrities like principal sponsor Gary Valenciano and TV host Tim Yap. After Maxene’s wedding, netizens are also asking, will her brother and his love team partner, Elmo Magalona and Janella Salvador, be the next ones to exchange “I do’s”?-Philstar

The next Manny Pacquiao With Manny Pacquiao now in the twilight of a storybook boxing career, the search is underway for his successor or at least someone who can even come close to mesmerizing the world like the fighting Senator. There will never be anyone quite like Pacquiao to emerge not just from the Philippines but anywhere in the universe. No one will ever duplicate or surpass his feat of winning world titles in eight weight divisions. Pancho Villa was the first Filipino world champion and he ruled the flyweight division from 1923 until his death in 1925 at the age of 23. Villa captivated the US audience with his devilmay-care style, punching power and charisma in and out of the ring. From when he knocked out Jimmy Wilde to win the flyweight crown in New York in 1923, Villa logged 26 fights up to his final outing, a non-title loss on points to Jimmy McLarnin in San Francisco. In 1924, Villa figured in 13 fights, averaging one a month. That’s unheard of in modern boxing. Villa died 10 days after bowing to McLarnin due to Ludwig’s Angina caused by a mouth infection that spread to the throat. His final record was 77-4-4, with 22 KOs. The next great Filipino boxer was Flash Elorde who reigned as world junior lightweight king from 1960 to 1967. Elorde retired from the ring with an 89-27-2 record, including 33 KOs, in 1971 after a 20-year career. He died of lung cancer in 1985 at the age of 49. Villa and Elorde are the only Filipino fighters enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Another Filipino, Lope (Papa) Sarreal, was inducted as a matchmaker and promoter. It took 35 years for Elorde to emerge from when Villa died.

And it took 27 years from when Elorde retired for Pacquiao to claim his first world title in 1998. Today, Pacquiao is still active as a fighter and there is talk of a bout in China in April. The ideal scenario is for Pacquiao to fight twice more then hang up his gloves before the year ends to concentrate on his political mission. It would be a dream if Pacquiao could regain the world title in his next outing and end his career with a championship defense at the Philippine Arena. Even as Pacquiao is still unretired, fans are wondering who will step up to follow in his footsteps. At the moment, there are five candidates – IBF superflyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas, IBO No. 1 superbantamweight Marlon Tapales, WBO No. 2 featherweight Mark Magsayo, WBO No. 2 superflyweight Aston Palicte and WBO No. 1 minimumweight Robert Paradero. Former two-time world champion Gerry Peñalosa’s choice as the next Pacquiao is Magsayo. The slugger known as Magnifico has an 18-0 record, with 13 KOs, seven in the first round. He’s exciting, colorful and daring. The 22-year-old ALA contender is the kind of fighter fans pay good money to watch. “Magsayo has to be tested against tougher opponents,” said Peñalosa. “He needs to work on his defense. What I like about him is his heart, he’s fearless and he doesn’t mind taking chances. He’s charismatic and that sets him apart from others who want to be like Manny.” Ancajas, 21, has a 28-1-1 record, with 19 KOs. Since outpointing Puerto Rico’s McJoe Arroyo to claim the IBF crown in 2016, he has repulsed three straight challengers, all inside the distance. His next defense is against Mexico’s Israel Gonzalez

in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Feb. 3. Ancajas is now aligned with Top Rank and Bob Arum has called him the next Pacquiao. “I’d like to see Jerwin develop more power,” said Peñalosa. Ancajas will mark his US debut against Gonzalez and it’s an acid test. He still has to prove himself as a top superflyweight against the other champions like Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Khalid Yafai and Naoya Inoue and big names like Chocolatito Gonzalez, Carlos Cuadras and Juan Francisco Estrada. HBO is investing heavily in the superflyweight division where Ancajas could be a major player. He has a chance to become a marquee fighter with Top Rank’s backing and HBO’s coverage. Ancajas’ star could be on the rise. Tapales, 25, is a former WBO bantamweight king who was stripped of the title for failing to make the 118-pound limit in a scheduled defense against Japan’s Shohei Omori in Osaka last April. The bout went on anyway and Tapales stopped Omori in the 11th round. Tapales is set to fight again in Australia on March 17. His record is 30-2, with 13 KOs. He has won his last four bouts by knockout. Palicte, 21, boasts a 24-2 record, with 20 KOs, and is coming off a fifth round stoppage of Mexico’s Jose Alfredo Rodriguez in Round Rock, Texas, last Dec. 8. Paradero, 21, has a 16-0 slate, with 11 KOs. He has never fought overseas or in Metro Manila. In 2016, Paradero won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth 105-pound title. “Paradero texted me once to ask if I could watch his fights on YouTube,” said Peñalosa. “He’s undefeated and ranked No. 1. I want to study his style more closely.”-(SPORTING CHANCE, Joaquin M. Henson)

PBA: Winless Kia Picanto marks 16th straight loss MANILA, Philippines – Kia Picanto continues to write woeful history in the PBA, as the franchise dropped its 16th consecutive game on Sunday. A 102-65 rout at the hands of the Alaska Aces marked Kia’s 16th straight loss since last season’s PBA Commissioner Cup. They are the only winless team in the league this conference at 0-4. To make matters worse, the Picanto seem to be regressing as the conference goes on: they have lost their past three games by an average of 35.6 points, and they sank to a new low on Sunday when they scored only five points in the third quarter against Alaska. This, after scoring 11 points in the third quarter of their game against Magnolia last week. League statistician Fidel Mangonon revealed that Kia’s losing streak is now the third longest of all time, and the longest since Ginebra lost 17 straight games in 1995. Their five-point third quarter was the worst by any team since Alaska scored five points as well, but that was in a finals game against San Miguel. Kia head coach Ricky Dandan did not need to know the numbers to understand that his team is in the midst of an absolutely brutal streak. “It’s very obvious,” he said. “We have a lot of weaknesses that we need to work on.” “Nobody gets used to a beating like that, three straight games. But we just have to move on, move forward,” he added. It was not all woe for Dandan, who noticed that the Picanto “were trying to play together” during certain stretches. However, they simply fell apart in the third quarter of the game, when they gave up 24 unanswered points to the Aces. -Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBN News KIA head coach Ricky Dandan.

OFW in UAE gifted with house and lot by thankful employer

A 45-year-old Filipina domestic helper has received a generous gift from her thankful employer: house and lot. Dina Tenerife Celo told Khaleej Times that the Dh23,000 (P320,000) gift from her employer Melissa McPike made her dreams of having a house and lot come true after working in Abu Dhabi for 20 years. The money will be used for purchasing land while the construction of the house will be financed by McPike. McPike, an American who acquired Emirati citizenship by marriage, said buying the house in Celo’s hometown of Camarines Sur was the least her family could do after the Filipina did so much for her children. She said Celo was trustworthy to the point that she left her debit card with her, adding

that the Filipina was now part of their family and is known to her two sons as “Aunty.” Celo took care of McPike’s children at Khalifa City from 1998 to 2000. McPike offered to hire her again several times in their correspondences since, but their plans did not pan out until Celo was left jobless in 2014. The Filipina said the positivity her relationship with her second family made up for the emotional toil she suffered while working restrictive jobs and working through a marriage that did not work out. The two-bedroom house is registered in Celo’s son’s name and will be constructed under the supervision of the domestic helper and one of her employer’s sons when she returns home for a year-long leave on January 18. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News

On the surface you might think that the system was fair but let me explain why I believe otherwise.

There are certain things that are going to happen regardless of what you do and how you plan your year. That is no excuse for not being prepared or having a plan. Example of some things that we have no control over: We have no control over the weather, the economy, the companies that we work for, or the words and action of others.

It is very important to note that sometime in December of 2013, the Government reopened the program stating that up to 5,000 applicants would be received, but that the applications would only be accepted on a set starting date in January and it would close once the 5,000 were received. Due to the huge demand to sponsor parents, the program had to close shortly after it opened. In Winnipeg North alone, I had several constituents that were rejected despite the fact that their applications were sent in on the opening date. Think about the process, your application had to arrive in Immigration’s hands on the morning of the announced date. If it arrived prior it would have been rejected and returned to you. Or, if your application was not in their hands that morning, you would have been late. I know for a fact that some constituents had their applications rejected because they were received in the immigration office from Canada Post on the morning after the acceptance date. Originally, people thought that applications would have been accepted for a few days but the demand was just too high. Justin Trudeau’s Government did two things to deal with the demand while trying to ensure that there was a higher sense of fairness. The number of applicants to be received was doubled from 5,000 to 10,000 and Immigration Canada would receive applications over a fourweek period of time. Those changes allow for more parents to immigrate to Canada and people who want to try sponsoring a parent and who meet the criteria will all be treated equally in terms of their chance to see their application move forward by a random draw. All applicants have an equal

There are some circumstances that we face as a result of my own choices, actions or lack of actions. I’ve known people that have had financial problems because they quit their job and didn’t have another job to go to. The reason they quit their job is because they didn’t like it or someone made them mad. What they really wanted was someone to accept responsibility for their lives and bail them out of trouble. There are people like that in the world. I am not talking about someone who through no fault of his or her own fell on hard times. I’m talking about someone that did something without considering the consequences of his or her actions and how these actions would affect others around them. While we may not be in control of all the circumstances that we will face this coming year, we do have control of how we will act and respond to them. We need to understand that there are three kinds of people in life. There are accusers. They always blame everybody else for their problems. Their favorite phrase is, “It’s all your fault.” It’s never my fault. It’s someone else’s fault. There are the excusers. Excusers are people that always have an excuse for not making a decision or doing something. There are the

opportunity. Until I am convinced of a better way that would insure a higher sense of fairness based on the huge demand, I truly believe the draw system is the way to go.

choosers, they say, “I choose to accept responsibility for my own life, goals and happiness. I’m not dependent upon somebody else. I choose the direction of my life.”

written down the things that are important to you. You must ask yourself, “What’s important to me?” What really counts? We can’t do what’s important until we clarify what’s important.

B - Believe I can change

I want to challenge each of you to, make a list of things that are important to you, a list of things that you want to accomplish. Then make this your prayer list for 2018. Pin it up on a wall and review it every day and pray about it. Then make a plan of action that will help you accomplish your goals for this year. Then do whatever you have to, to make and get the most of this coming year. Then watch God do miracles in your life. Clarify what you really want.

Stop saying, “I can’t” and start saying, “I can”. The person that believes that they can change with the help of God will change. Philippians 4:13 (Jerusalem Bible) “There is nothing I cannot master with the help of Christ who gives me strength.” Do you really believe that verse? There‘s nothing I can’t master! That means there’s nothing I’m going to hit in the next 365 days, no problem, no situation, no circumstance, no hassle that] can’t handle, that I can’t manage, that I’m not competent to handle with the help and strength God gives me. With the help and grace of God I can overcome the past and face the future. I have new handle on life for this coming year. I believe and know I can change. Not on my own power, but with the power that Christ gives me. C - Clarify what I really want You must decide what’s important and what’s not important. God has given each of us an incredible gift called the freedom to choose, the freedom of choice. That’s one of the things that makes us like God. When God says in Genesis 1, “Let Us make man in Our own image,” that gave us the freedom of choice. We have the freedom to choose what we want in life. The only way can clarify what we really want is to make a list and decide what is important and what is not. It’s amazing most people never do this. They never stop and think through and write down on paper what’s really important to them. Maybe some of you have never done this. You’ve never

We don’t have time for everything. We need to clarify the two or three things that we’ve got to get done this year. What are the things that are really important? May I suggest two or three things that need to be at the top of your list? Your relationship with God needs to be #1. What are you going to do this year to strengthen and improve your relationship with God? What are you going to do to become more intimate with Him? You need to make your relationship with God top priority. Your relationship with your family needs to be #2. What are you going to do to build a stronger and better relationship with your family? What are you going to change about yourself that will help you to accomplish this? Your relationship with your church and church family needs to be #3. What are you willing to do to improve the quality of your church? How involved are you willing to get to help your church accomplish the commission that God has given it? D - Don’t wait to begin. Do it now! These three words can change your life.

ABS-CBN Names Olivia De Jesus as New Global COO MANILA, Philippines, January 12, 2018 – ABSCBN Corporation, the Philippines’ largest media and entertainment network, has named Olivia De Jesus as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ABS-CBN Global Ltd., the organization that oversees all international subsidiaries of ABS-CBN and manages its global flagship brand, TFC (The Filipino Channel). De Jesus takes over her position from Rafael Lopez who has retired. Lopez will continue to be engaged by the company as Executive Adviser to the President and CEO of ABS-CBN Corporation. As COO, De Jesus will provide the leadership and vision necessary to grow the Global business. She will drive strategy formulation and establish initiatives to expand the company’s product lines and markets. She will effectively manage the company’s regional business operations, product management, content creation, support functions and corporate services to ensure that financial strength and operating efficiencies are achieved. Prior to her appointment, De Jesus held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility in ABS-CBN. If you and I wait for the right situation or the right kind of circumstances we will miss out on life all together. There will never be an ideal set of circumstance to start out on. To make the most of 2018 and to accomplish the things you want to accomplish, start now. Don’t wait to begin. Ecclesiastes 1 1:4 basically says, “If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.” We always say, “When things settle down.” Or “When things get better.” The problem is things may never settle down or get any better. That’s called life! If you’re out there using that as an excuse, “When things settle down or get better, I’m going to start having a daily quiet time and read my Bible every day,” you’re never going to do it. You learn to read your Bible and pray when things are unsettled and not so good. “When things settle down, I’m going to spend more time with my kids.” They’ll be grown and gone! There are a lot of people that have missed out on life waiting for the ideal set of circumstance or waiting for things to get better. While they were waiting, time just kept right on going and passed them by. You have to determine right now that it doesn’t matter what happens or what comes your way, this is going to the best year yet. What kind of person Will you be this year? Will you be an accuser, an excuser, or a chooser? Will you accept responsibility for your life? Will you believe you can change? Will you clarify what you want this year and what is important to you? Will you start right now? Will your relationship with God be on the top of your priority list? Will your family and church be at the top of that list? The choice is yours. What will it be?

Since joining ABS-CBN in 1996, De Jesus has held other positions such as Director for Marketing Communications at the International Division, Head of Manila Operations at ABS-CBN Global, Managing Director at Creative Programs Inc. and Global Head of Content Strategy. Prior to joining ABS-CBN, De Jesus was an awardwinning senior creative at McCann-Erickson and Saatchi & Saatchi in the Philippines. De Jesus has been very active in the community as Managing Director of ABS-CBN North America. She served as Board Director and Treasurer for the Asian American Advertising Federation (3AF) from 2008 to 2011. She was named among the Filipina Women’s Network’s (FWN) 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the U.S. in 2012. She still serves as Vice Chairman of the Board for ABS-CBN Foundation International, the non-profit philanthropic arm of ABS-CBN. De Jesus completed an Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in 2015. She graduated from the University of the Philippines, Diliman with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication.

Think you don’t need life insurance?

Think again. YOUR hard work and dedication has paid off – the result of a successful business endeavor or a lucrative business that you built. You’ve established a comfortable lifestyle where you enjoy your beautiful home, drive a nice car and maybe even have a nice waterfront property. You may believe that your success means you don’t need life insurance because you can self-insure against the unexpected financial burdens life throws your way. But is that really the case?

For the average Canadian, life insurance provides protection for the family when there’s a death and the income stops. Life insurance can provide funds to help pay the mortgage or maintain a family’s quality of life when someone dies. But for successful business owners with millions in assets or well-off people whose home is paid for and kids are grown, is life insurance relevant? The answer is yes – and here’s why. Life insurance does more than protect your ability to earn an income. It also protects your wealth – existing assets, including real estate holdings, investments and your business. Life insurance is key to effective estate, business and lifestyle planning – especially in the getting ready and early stages of retirement. What was deemed a necessary expense or the cost of protection in your younger years, now presents a valuable financial opportunity.

Take term life insurance, for example. For businesses with multiple owners, a buy-sell agreement sets out the conditions – such as disability or death – that give the owners the right to buy the other owner’s share of the business. Ideally, this agreement should be funded in a way that doesn’t cause financial difficulty for the company or the person being bought out – and that’s where term life insurance comes in. if an owner dies, the company or surviving owners (depending on how the insurance is set up) can use the insurance proceeds to buy the deceased owner’s share. Through a buy-sell agreement funded with life insurance, a business owner can help ensure that the business’ successors have the money they need to buy the business for its fair price and can continue the business without excessive debt or installment payments. With permanent life insurance, a business owner can protect and often improve their financial position via: - Potentially superior rates of return (compared to some other conservative investments such as guaranteed investment certificates and government bonds). - Tax-effective wealth transfers to the next generation or from a corporation, - Additional tax-free retirement income through a series o loans, using the policy cash value as security. - Greater tax efficiency related to charitable giving, and - Estate preservation.

Term vs. perm – the difference Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period of time, such as 10, 20, 30 years or until a certain age. It’s an excellent lower-cost method to provide money exactly when it’s needed, whether that need is to protect your income or provide funds to support a buy-sell agreement. Permanent life insurance (including whole life and universal life) provides lifelong protection. It provides the same protection as term life insurance, but it can also help you grow and manage your wealth. Because you’re a business owner or wealthy, your needs may be different from the average Canadian, but your need for a sound financial plan that’s designed to protect and grow your hard-earned assets isn’t. I can help you determine how much and what type of insurance you need.
