Duterte gov’t eyes ‘new city’ to decongest Manila: Diokno Diokno said one of the possible locations of development is Clark, Pampanga, citing the international airport that has two parallel runways. OTTAWA - A 25-year-old woman with a progressive neurodegenerative disease on Monday challenged Canada’s new rules on doctor-assisted dying, saying they should not be restricted to terminally ill patients. The legislation, which is barely 10 days old, is much less comprehensive than what was originally proposed by a parliamentary special committee that studied the hugely controversial issue. The plaintiff, Julia Lamb, said the law is unconstitutional because it excludes Canadians “who are suffering with no immediate end in sight,” according to a statement. Lamb, who is backed by the British Columbia Liberties Association, filed her lawsuit with the province’s supreme court. She suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, which causes weakness and wasting of muscles. As the disease progresses, she could lose the use of her hands or arms, need a ventilator to help her breathe, and no longer be able to speak, write or use her computer, as well as require constant care while being in constant pain. “My biggest fear (is that) if my condition gets much worse I will become trapped,” she told a nationally televised press conference. “If my suffering becomes intolerable, I would like to be able to make a final choice about how much suffering to endure,” she said. Canadians with diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy, multiple sclerosis, spinal stenosis, locked in syndrome, traumatic spinal injury, Parkinson’s disease and Huntingdon’s disease are not eligible for doctor-assisted dying under the new law. The new legislation comes one year after the Supreme Court struck down a prohibition against doctor-assisted suicide. The court gave Ottawa until June 6 to draft new legislation that would permit consenting adults with serious health problems to end their lives.-AFP

Brexit won’t affect OFWs – UK envoy MANILA, Philippines - Britain’s decision to leave the European Union will not have an impact on Filipinos working and living in the United Kingdom, as they arrived in the UK under a “completely different immigration regime,” British Ambassador Asif Ahmad said yesterday. Ahmad said the UK has an independent migration and visa policy, not being part of Schengen. He said Filipinos came to the UK based on rules that would not be changed. “There’s a period of uncertainty for many people in the UK because nobody likes change. But if you look at the fundamentals of the status of the 22,000 Filipinos who live and work there, they came under a completely differ-
ent immigration regime,” Ahmad said in an interview. The Schengen area includes EU member-states that have abolished passports and any other type of border control documents at their mutual borders. It functions as a single country for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy. The UK negotiated opt-outs from Schengen. “We are not part of Schengen. They came to UK based on our rules and those rules will not be changed,” he said, referring to the Filipinos. Ahmad said Britain needs the services of the Filipinos. He expressed belief that Philippine investments in the UK and sales to the Philippines, which rose by 38 percent in 2015, would not be affected.
“I don’t think anybody from the Philippines should be worried,” Ahmad said. In a press briefing on the Brexit vote, Ahmad said he did not see any change in the arrangement on British investments in the Philippines. The diplomat said that UK investments in the Philippines’ financial market, manufacturing and oil and gas would not diminish. “Our role in the world will not change dramatically because of this decision,” he said, referring to the Brexit vote. Ahmad said the referendum has to be activated by enacting legislation. “This is something the Parliament will decide on, the mechanism for changes to be effective,” Ahmad said. -By Pia Lee-Brago

Meet with Duterte, US State chief Kerry urged
Nationwide curfew, liquor ban eyed
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is bent on implementing curfew for minors as soon as he assumes office on June 30. Duterte is also looking at implementing a nationwide liquor ban from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. He said the curfew aims to protect minors from criminals, especially at night. “The curfew is meant to protect the children from dangers and not to harm them,” Duterte said during yesterday’s flag-raising ceremony at the Davao City Hall, his last as city mayor. Duterte said he would make sure that parents of children rounded up in the streets are
taken into police custody for abandonment. He shrugged off the stand of certain sectors that the curfew for minors would violate the rights of children. Duterte said he would be harsh against those who harm children, especially those engaged in illegal drugs. “Do not destroy the youth because I will kill you,” he said. Duterte campaigned on a promised to solve crime and illegal drugs within six months. “If I said it during the campaign, I will do it. I am just consistent with the promises I made,” he said.-By Edith Regalado
‘Family of 4 needs P120K monthly’ MANILA, Philippines – Most Filipinos aspire for a “simple and comfortable life” in which they can afford to buy a car and a medium-sized house, send their children to college, regularly spend leisure time with family and friends and take occasional trips around the country. But this may not be so simple after all, as a family of four must have a gross monthly income of at least P120,000 at 2015 prices to afford things that they believe can make life easier for their families, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Expounding on the results of its Ambisyon Natin 2040 survey which had its soft launch in March, NEDA director general Emmanuel Esguerra said the lifestyle aspired for by most Filipinos (79 percent of survey respondents) is actually that of a middle class living standard centered on the family. “In speaking about these aspirations in life, words like ‘magulang,’ ‘anak’ and ‘pamilya’ were often used. At first, we thought we were just getting modest aspiration goals but these are actually middle class aspirations,” said the NEDA chief during the Ambisyon Natin 2040 Media Forum with the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP).
NEDA deputy director general Rosemarie Edillon said most Filipinos fail to attain a “simple and comfortable life” partly because many are trapped in the cycle of poverty as parents have failed to secure a comfortable retirement, thus burdening their children, who themselves fail to secure their own future. File photo
The income level of at least P120,000 was arrived at factoring in the amortizations that would have to be made for a car, a house and lot, as well as taxes that would have to be paid and allowances for emergency needs and exigencies. The respondents further defined a “simple and comfortable life” as one “free from worry and hardships” with their families. The Ambisyon Natin 2040 survey is not a national economic plan tied to an economic
growth strategy. Rather, it was meant to determine the medium-term and short-term aspirations of Filipinos regarding standard of living, finances, security and ease of transacting with the government within a generation’s time. The survey, initiated last year and completed in February, utilized face-to-face interviews with 10,000 persons across all economic classes. The respondents were between 15 and 50 years old. -By Czeriza Valencia
MANILA, Philippines — United States (US) Secretary of State John Kerry should visit President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to secure the Philippines-US relationship, an analyst said. Center for Strategic and International Studies fellow John Schaus said that Kerry should be the first cabinet official to meet with Duterte when he assumes office and directly hear his objectives. “The first step in securing the US-Philippine relationship in the next administration is to meet with Duterte, listen to his views, and start that conversation. This is something only Secretary Kerry can do, and he should,” Schaus said in his article published by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative. Schaus added that Kerry should hear what Duterte sees for cooperating with the US and reassure him of the US commitment to the mutual defense treaty between the two countries. “The secretary can reinforce the message the United States has delivered to the Philippines throughout the Obama administration, emphasizing the importance of partnership and cooperation to enhance the security of both the Philippines and the region as a whole,” Schaus said. Only US President Barack Obama and Ambassador Philip Goldberg were able to interact with Duterte upon being proclaimed as the incoming Philippine president.
Obama spoke with Duterte by phone while Goldberg traveled to Davao City earlier this month for a courtesy call. Duterte said he asked US Ambassador Philip Goldberg in a recent meeting, “Are you with us or are you not with us?” adding that Goldberg responded, “Only if you are attacked.” Goldberg was referring to the two countries’ Mutual Defense Treaty providing that they will “act to meet common dangers” when one is attacked. Schaus noted that Duterte is not well-known to US foreign policy establishment and might be a difficult leader for Washington to work with. “Duterte is not reflexively pro-American and has expressed serious concerns about both the history of US involvement in the Philippines and the credibility of the US treaty commitment to defend his country,” Schaus said. -By Patricia Lourdes Viray

TECH: What is the Internet of Things? “The Internet of Things” is a pretty annoying term, as buzzwords go. There is no new Internet made up of objects. There’s no little Twitter for thermostats, or Facebook for waffle irons. “Internet of Things” refers to everyday appliances that are now networkable: Lights. Thermostats. Coffee makers. Security cameras. Door locks. Sprinklers. Robot vacuums. Usually it just means you can control them from your phone. (There’s also an explosion of IoT interest in industrial and commercial buildings, and that’s a totally different ball game. Those uses allow alarm systems, heating/cooling, lighting, and all kinds of sensors to communicate intelligently, both with each other and with building managers, for a huge boost in convenience, savings, and environmental payoff. But in this article and video, we’re talking about the consumer Internet of Things things—stuff in your home.) Some of these consumer things make sense. The thermostat is handy; the Nest thermostat programs itself by observing what time you come and go, and the Honeywell Lyric uses your phone’s GPS to know when
you’re approaching the house, and get it heated or cooled in advance. OK. But most of the IoT is just like a gold rush to sell stuff. There’s an IoT water bottle, an IoT doggie-treat dispenser, and IoT toilet-paper holder (lets your phone know when the roll needs replacing). There’s an IoT umbrella, an IoT fork, an IoT toothbrush, an IoT trash can, and—I am not making this up—an IoT tampon. And don’t forget the Egg Minder. I kid you not: now, from anywhere in the world, you can see HOW MANY EGGS YOU HAVE LEFT. This is a real, shipping product. So far, the Internet of Things is more like the Internet of Things that Aren’t Selling Well. That’s partly because they’re complicated to set up, partly because they’re just not that necessary, and partly because you need a different app for every single product! One app for the lights, a different one for the thermostat, a third for the coffee maker. Every big company is trying to create a unified standard— Apple, Microsoft, Google, Intel—but that just means that there are now 40 “unified standards!”

South China Sea reefs ‘decimated’ as giant clams harvested in bulk TANMEN, China - Ornaments made from the shells of endangered giant clams, renowned in China for having auspicious powers and the luster of ivory, have become coveted luxuries, a trend which has wreaked havoc on the ecosystem of the South China Sea. China banned harvesting of giant clams last year but in the tiny seaside town Tanmen on the southern island of Hainan, most stores still sell products made from the over four-footwide shells. The once sleepy fishing village has transformed over the past three years to harvest clams on an industrial scale. There are around 460 handicraft retailers, compared to 15 in 2012, with the industry now supporting around 100,000 people. The price of giant clams has
risen 40-fold over the past five years, while the plundering of the seabed has led to severe degradation of the reefs, scientists and academics said. “With rising tensions in the South China Sea, Tanmen fishermen’s important role in strengthening China’s claims in the disputed waters and supporting the People’s Liberation Army navy are recognized by the Chinese government,” said Zhang Hongzhou, an associate research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. “As a result, authorities have turned a blind eye.” China claims almost the whole South China Sea, setting it at odds with rival claims from its Southeast Asian neighbours, including the Philippines. The region accounts for more than
a tenth of global fisheries production. The Qionghai government, which looks after Tanmen, announced in March 2015 that it would strictly enforce the ban on digging, carrying and selling of endangered marine species including the giant clams. “The government is enforcing the ban,” said Zhang Hongying, an official at the Qionghai government foreign affairs office. Another official called Zhao said the authorities were not doing anything to support the industry. “If the business is legal, our government won’t stop people doing it,” he said. “But there’s no government file saying that we are going to do something to promote the shell industry.”Farah Master, Reuters

Neri explained that she took a break from her social media accounts to avoid negativity because of her delicate pregnancy. “Nagpapahinga lang ako at ayaw ko rin ng may mga kausap. Gusto ko tahimik lang. Mga kapatid, asawa ko, at nanay ko lang kinakausap ko,” she wrote. “Yes, maselan ako magbuntis. Kaya maraming iniiwasan. Bawal stress. Happy thoughts lang lagi,” she added. Whenever she can get out of her bed, she paints, play with puzzles and also sing. She refrained from watching TV too. She then thanked her husband Chito Miranda for taking care of her despite his busy schedule.

Luis denied in recent interviews that there is something romantic brewing between him and the Banana Sundae actress. The two stars are said to have become close after Luis defended Jessy during an altercation between her and Enrique during ASAP’s London tour last year.

Coleen Garcia on not quitting showbiz:
‘Talagang may mga haters tayong lahat’
After doing the Star Cinema film Love Me Tomorrow, Coleen Garcia admitted she looks forward to doing more projects this year. The 23-year-old actress also said that she still plans
to continue her Psychology studies in the future. “Oo sana pero now kasi because of the schedule I haven’t been there in a while pero tinuloy ko,” she explained.
Having joined showbiz in 2011 when she signed up with Star Magic, Coleen said she has already learned how to deal with bashers and negative people. “I learned to ignore it
already. Iniisip ko na lang na I already got this far, nakarating na ako sa punto na ito na hindi ako nagpadala sa mga bashers, hindi ako nakinig sa mga sinasabi ng mga hindi nakakakilala
sa akin. So if I give up now kung nakikinig ako sa kanila sayang naman lahat ng pinagdaanan ko,” she shared. Coleen said that having fans and critics are unavoidable in showbiz. But she still cannot understand why so many people bully others online. “I’ve accepted and I understand hindi pa rin nawawala yun when it comes to everyone because I realize even when I was in high school when I wasn’t in showbiz yet talagang may mga haters tayong lahat. There are people in our lives who are set to put us down or bring us down and the whole process of getting to where we want to go includes dealing with those things. But some people really go too far. I’ve read in so many articles that bashers and haters and insensitive words really cause suicides and bullying causes suicides so if your mean enough to drive a person to do something like that then it’s really not right already,” she explained. In her last movie Love Me Tomorrow, Coleen said she was able to learn something new about love. “I realized that in my personal life na kailangan mo maging ready para tumanggap ng pag-ibig at para ibigay yung pag-ibig mo sa ibang tao. You really have to learn to love yourself first. You have to learn how to stand strong and be whole as a person bago mo ibigay yung sarili mo sa ibang tao,” she admitted.-Rhea Manila Santos

MANILA, Philippines – Wildlife filmmaker Jeff Kurr, the creative force behind Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, said that conservation efforts for thresher sharks will boost Philippine tourism. “Thousands and thousands of people around the world go on dives and pay a lot of money to go on boats just to see these animals up close,” Kurr told The STAR in a phone interview last week. “So, I think that a smart government that’s interested in improving their economy is going to want to preserve these animals and take advantage of the shark tourism factor.” Conservationists like Save Sharks Networks and Greenpeace have called for the protection of these thresher sharks. These marine creatures are often sighted in Malapascua Island in Cebu, which has banned the capture, killing and sale of threshers. Despite existence of legislation to protect them, thresher sharks are still regularly caught, said Greenpeace in a recent media release. “A lot of scientists have done studies about the value of sharks. I don’t know the exact numbers... but I know, for example, if you go out and kill a thresher shark for the meat, it might be worth $50,” Kurr said. “But if you keep that thresher shark alive and you bring tourists out on a boat to see it, it creates an entire industry and it might be worth thousands of dollars to have that shark in the water. So, it behoves governments and regulatory agencies to keep their sharks alive for shark tourism because it is a fast-growing business.” Meanwhile, Shark Week, the annual, week-long shark-based programming, is back on the Discovery Channel starting today until July 1. Kurr has served as executive producer, director, underwater cinematographer, editor and writer in about 30 shark-related shows and documentaries. He has employed innovative technology such as thermal imaging, remote-operated submersibles, robotic seals and high-speed cameras to document shark behavior. According to Kurr, sharks around the world face a lot of threats created by humans. For one, they are heavily overfished. “I’ve heard estimates of 75 to 100 million sharks being pulled from the water every single year,” he said, adding that this has decimated shark populations everywhere because sharks don’t reproduce as fast as other fish. “I know Discovery has worked very hard to not only entertain people and have people appreciate the beauty and majesty of sharks, but also to inform them that sharks are definitely in trouble and we should do everything we can to support conservation groups that want to save sharks.” Even though Shark Week has been shedding light on sharks for the past 28 years, Kurr said these creatures remain

misunderstood. “A lot of people still believe that sharks are these dangerous, bloodthirsty killers. And I think everybody around the world should understand that sharks aren’t really like that at all. In fact, if we didn’t have bait in the water with us, the sharks wouldn’t even come close to us,” he related. “I realize that people are occasionally bitten by sharks, and those are circumstances where it’s mistaken identity. Sharks mistake a person for their regular prey. But what I’ve found in my experiences in all these years of filming sharks is that they’re actually quite shy, they’re very cautious and for the most part, they want nothing to do with people unless we have some food in our hands.” In the course of getting shots that no one has seen before, Kurr has had nerve-wracking experiences filming
sharks. He recalls trying to capture a great white shark flying out of the water then “it landed just a few feet away, completely soaked me, but it was an incredible shot. It was probably one of the scariest moments I’ve ever had because I couldn’t see the shark coming.” Kurr’s interest in marine wildlife began when he was a young boy watching the undersea world presented through the Jacques Cousteau specials. “I’m just lucky because I’m one of the few people who can say that his childhood dreams of becoming a wildlife filmmaker came true,” said the California native and father of two. Kurr hopes his shark adventures will eventually lead him to the Philippines. “I have not been to the Philip-
pines. I have not done a lot in the Far East, unfortunately. I’ve mainly specialized in white sharks over my 26 years, and they seem to hang out a lot in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, so that’s really where I’ve spent the bulk of my time,” he said. “But I know you guys have a nice whale shark population over there, which I would love to go film over there, and the threshers. Hopefully, we can get Discovery interested in doing a show in the Philippines someday soon.”-By Nathalie Tomada

Significant accomplishments of Trudeau government
n June 17, the House of Commons in Ottawa adjourned for the summer. As I was flying back to Winnipeg, I reflected on what, I believe, are some of the more significant accomplishments of the Trudeau Government. The following is how I would summarize the debates and issues that affect us all. The federal budget was the most debated issue as MPs talked about taxes, infrastructure spending, small business taxes, deficits and so much more. To me, it is the Canada Child Benefit Program, the substantial increase to the guaranteed income supplement program, and how the Government moved towards income equality – these are the issues that I talked a lot about. The Child Benefit Program is likely what budget 2016/17 will be most remembered for. In fact, it might be the most significant social program enhancement since the creation of the Canada Health Act. Hundreds of thousands of children will be lifted out of poverty and parents with young children will receive significant monthly cheques from the Government

Taxpayers appreciate the simplicity and frugality. The people will appreciate it even more if the new president’s example will be emulated down the line, not just by bureaucrats but also by Duterte’s political allies, many of whom like to live it up or promote themselves at taxpayers’ expense.

Duterte must eradicate epals with the same zeal that he has put into his anti-crime campaign. Every new administration has promised to be judicious with the use of people’s money. The question is how long the simplicity and frugality can be sustained, and whether the rest of the government will follow the example set by the chief executive. At the Bureau of Customs, for example, even minor clerks reportedly tool around in luxury SUVs. These types of government workers will not settle for maruya and coconut juice for their regular nourishment. Duterte must see to it that his message of simplicity is heard loud and clear by everyone in government, with his political allies also following his example. He must make sure simplicity and frugality in government will not be a mere ningas cogon or flash-in-the-pan initiative, good only for the first few months of a new administration.

Noy-xit Philippines Analysts at the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) are still wary on the full effects of Brexit in the coming days. The fears were heightened following calls from the remaining 27 EU member-states to also reconsider their respective memberships. The PSE index – barometer of the country’s economy – went down 1.6 percent last Friday. It was a relatively smaller decline than seen in nearly all Asian markets after the Brexit referendum turned for United Kingdom’s leaving the EU. On the other hand, economic managers led by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima believed the Philippines is maybe less vulnerable than other countries. Purisima, however, admitted the country is “never immune” to the effects of Brexit. In an official statement he issued last Friday, Purisima said the Philippines is “taking a cautiously vigilant stance on the Brexit’s effects on our shores – gradual and minimal at this stage.” “The improvement in the fundamentals of the Philip-
pine economy will put us in good stead but should not lull us into overconfidence,” Purisima cautioned. He cited the Philippine economy has “a robust domestic consumption core, insulating it from the bulk of Brexit’s effects.” For now, the Philippines is less vulnerable to the impact of Brexit because of the country’s sustained solid macro-economic fundamentals. These were built upon decades of years that various economic and fiscal reforms were made to bear upon Filipinos. Implementing these economic and fiscal reforms in the Philippines was like giving bitter pills to the so-called “sick man of Asia.” Grudgingly as it may sound, it must be acknowledged though these macro-economic fundamentals were further strengthened in the past six years under the outgoing administration of President Benigno “Noy” Aquino III. President Aquino steps down from office at Malaca-

COMMONSENSE ñang Palace on Thursday. Among other accomplishments – not to mention failures – of his administration, P-Noy leaves behind a track of growth rates in the country’s gross domestic product. As of the first quarter of this year, GDP grew 6.9%. Thus, the Aquino administration rightfully takes credit for making the Philippine economy a stellar performer in Asia with consistent positive growth rates. This is not to mention the fact the Philippines received several credit rating upgrades as a result of these fiscal and economic reforms. These were combined with good governance recognition earned for the country by President Aquino. Others – as in Aquino critics – may call it sheer luck. But at least, no one can dispute
the numbers. It is definitely a legacy of the Aquino administration on the macro-economic performance. Speaking of performance, President Aquino conferred to Purisima the country’s highest honors – the Order of Lakandula. P-Noy gave same award to 15 other Cabinet officials. The Palace was not clear on the criteria of these awards why the rest of the 22 Cabinet officials of P-Noy were not given the award, especially to those who served him since day one of his administration. Not even a token loyalty award? Other co-terminus subCabinet officials were given the Presidential Merit Award by P-Noy for “outstanding service to the President.” For the next Cabinet team of the incoming administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, they will have to face the challenge of the Brexit to the Philippine economy. As the new head of the economic managers of the Philippine government, incoming Finance Secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez will chiefly carry the ball of the Duterte Cabinet team. Duterte himself has publicly admitted he is not fond
I
t is too early to tell what could be the impact to the Philippine economy of last week’s British majority vote to leave the European Union. Local stock analysts and economic experts gave mixed assessments of how vulnerable the Philippines would be on the so-called “Brexit,” short for Britain’s exit from the EU. After Brexit, a “domino effect” on the rest of EU, especially other rich countries may also start leaving. Initially, it gave rise to puns of possible EU countries to follow Britain’s suit. Taking off from Brexit, the joke of other member-states to get out of EU goes like this: “Grexit (as in Greece); Depar-tugal (as in Portugal); Ita-leave (as in Italy); Czechout (as in Czech Republic); Ous-tria (as in Austria); Finish (as in Finland); Slovak-out (as in Slovakia); and Bye-gium (as in Belgium). Only Remania (as in Romania) will stay at EU.” But the joke is only adding fuel to the apprehensions in the Philippines and the rest of the global community on the fate of EU. Analysts at the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) are still wary on the full effects of

The Pope’s statement on killing can be confusing
T
he Pope recently made a statement that the commandment – “Thou shall not kill is absolute” – Does he mean that killing is never justified? I think a clarification is needed. The Catholic Church is still in debate with some bishops saying that killing can be justified in some situations. Therefore the answer, it seems to me is there are different situations when killing can be justified. Two examples are in war and self-defense. I think that this ought to be said otherwise the ordinary layman is unable to understand that there are indeed exceptions, as part of the debate even if Pope Francis opposes “capital punishment, saying it’s an offense to life, contradicts God’s plan and serves no purpose for punishment.” The Pope issued the statement in a video message to an anti-death penalty congress in Norway. Pope Francis declared the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” has absolute value and applies both to the innocent and to the guilty. He has gone beyond what his predecessors state and what is commonly recognized by traditional Catholic teaching. He said rather than rendering justice, the death penalty fosters vengeance. That is viewpoint and must go through a test of time. Church teaching allows capital punishment when it is the only way to defend lives “effectively” against an aggressor. Francis sent his message
Carmen N. Pedrosa
FROM A DISTANCE to the delegates of the sixth World Congress against capital punishment, currently being held in Oslo, Norway. That may be the Pope’s position but not necessarily of government leaders who have to deal directly with criminals. Our president, Rody Duterte in reply said that capital punishment is retribution, not a deterrent. I think. It is both. It is its absoluteness that stops potential criminals. “If it can be justified, it’s not murder – it’s justifiable homicide, or manslaughter, or an act of combat, or self-defense, or capital punishment, or euthanasia, etc. Now, if you are asking if homicide can ever be justified, the answer is obviously yes.”says other ecclesiastical authorities. In Evangelium Vitae, John Paul teaches that both defense of society and retribution are necessary for the legitimate exercise of capital punishment, but neither in itself is enough. This teaching does not reverse any previous Church teaching, since no previous Church teaching had ad-

Death penalty is not merely a rejection of traditional Catholic teaching it also deepens the Church’s “dedication to the dignity of the human person and the common good of society.” Jose Alejandrino, BayanKo adviser sent this post about China. I agree with what he said about how to deal with China specially with the arbitration being pushed by the Philippines through UNCLOS. This is not the way Oriental culture settles conflicts especially when it is between neighbors. As one Chinese ambassador told me sometime ago, when the Philippines chose this path, it made the conflict even more intractable. “The way to deal with China is not to make it lose face. For the Chinese losing face is important. If we get a ruling from the UN tribunal favorable to us, leave it in the backburner and don’t push it in their face. The way to deal with China is through quiet diplomacy, not by a verbal war in the press. By ratcheting up heated public rhetoric, it merely contributes to strengthening the hawks and undermining the hands of the moderates in
Beijing. It is counter-productive in that it increases tension unnecessarily. In my informal talks with Chinese officials, I pointed out that we Filipinos have our sensibilities like the Chinese too have theirs. We Filipinos have our share of hotheads like the Chinese. We must understand each other’s sensibilities in order not to strengthen the hotheads. If the hotheads take over, it will lead to a direct and violent confrontation where nobody will gain. The Chinese understood this. President Duterte and DFA Sec. Yasay have already announced the pillars of their foreign policy. An independent foreign policy of being friends with all nations. A policy of being treated as an equal and not a vassal of any foreign nation. A policy of asserting and defending our territorial and maritime rights. The Chinese don’t want war as much as we don’t. It does not need to invade the Philippines. China only needs to shut down our communication facilities through cyber war. It has shown its capability by hacking sensitive material from US defense and corporate bodies. It only needs one well placed intermediate range missile with a nuclear warhead to wipe out 12 million Filipinos in Metro Manila. It already controls
an important segment of our economy. Like it or not, China is the big boy around the block. Being a small boy, we have to learn to live with the big boy. Inspite of US government pronouncements, the American public will not accept to go to war with China over a few islets and rocks in the Spratlys. The US has its own set of problems at home. The only time when the US will risk a violent confrontation with China is when the international maritime trade lanes are shut down. But China is unlikely to do this because she herself depends on international trade. Why does China want to control the Spratlys? Because she feels threatened by overseas bases like those in the Philippines surrounding her. This was the same rationale when Russia took over part of Georgia and part of the Ukraine. Did NATO do something about it? No, they weren’t worth going to war with Russia. We Filipinos have to shed our colonial mentality, our over dependence and reliance on the US. We have to learn we are a part of Asia and not America. We have to learn to stand on our own feet. We have to learn to live with our Asian neighbors. President Duterte knows what to do. Leave it to him. The Chinese president holds him in high respect and there is no reason why they can’t get along together. What we can do is tone down all the war rhetoric in the formal and social media.”

13 practical car-care tips for the summer season
led lights
1. Mind your car’s cooling system. Coolingsystem failure is one of the major causes of engine failure. Come summer time, it becomes more important to ensure that it’s in tip-top shape. If you have a newer car or a vehicle that has been religiously maintained, there’s not much to worry about. However, if you can’t remember the last time you gave your faithful road-trip companion a onceover, flushing the coolant, checking the condition of all the coolant hoses (including the bypass hoses in the hard-to-reach areas) and checking the fan motor as soon as possible, would be a good idea. By coolant, we mean a 50-50 mix of distilled and any commercially available coolant. Unless you’re using a premix coolant that already has water mixed in or specialty coolants that don’t require adding water, using coolant without adding water isn’t the way to go. You’ll be worse off than using water by itself.
2. Inspect the radiator pressure cap and the overflow tank to see if either one needs

replacement. Any leaks on one of them will mean that you’ll be slowly losing coolant until you run out at the most inopportune moment and have your engine die on you. Tip: For most modern cars, there’s no real need to remove the pressure cap to check the coolant level unless you’re flushing the system. Check the overflow tank with the engine cold. If the level is anywhere between the minimum and maximum level, you’re good.
3. It is critical to use the right oil for your
engine. It becomes more important when temperatures hit the extreme. In general, just follow the manufacturer’s recommended viscosity and you’ll be fine. Do check for leaks and get them taken care of.
4. Check and change as necessary your differential, gear and transmission fluids if you haven’t changed them in the last few 10 thousands of kilometers.
5. Heat plays havoc most on plastic and rubber parts. Have the drive belts inspected and replaced as necessary while you’re getting things under the hood checked. Lose a belt and you’ll likely lose your HVAC system or your charging system. The first one is an inconvenience. The second one? It’s going to cut your trip short and kill your battery, too, if you can’t pull over and stop to get a tow.

Summer’s obviously here. With the road-trip season comes the higher temperatures that we all have to contend with. For car owners, it means taking steps to minimize the negative effects of the scorching heat. The elevated temperatures can take a toll on vehicles and occupants alike. Let’s take a look at some of the ways we can extend extra care for our cars this summer.

adjourning. I will comment on C-6 in a future article. For now, I would like to comment on C-14. This bill was emotionally charged, often leading to MPs sharing personal stories that often led to tears. Last year, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that we needed to pass a new law that would allow medically assisted death and after one extension, we were told to have it in place before the end of June. Bill C-14, therefore, did just that - it set the legal framework for Canada to allow people in certain situations to seek medical assistance in ending their life. Many argued that the Government went too far while others argued we did not go far enough. I believe a majority of Canadians will support what was passed which is now a law in Canada. It is really important to note that there were Liberals who voted against the legislation but there were also Conservatives who voted in favour. I voted yes because I believe the right balance was reached and that my constituents generally would have wanted me to. As I am writing this, issues like Canada Post (door to door mail), returning the age of retirement from 67 to 65, Bill C-10 (aerospace jobs) come to my mind. Over the summer I will have a public meeting that is open to all, so that not only will I provide a report but people may express their opinions on the issues I mentioned to me directly. You all have a great summer! (MP Lamoureux’s Winnipeg office may be reached at 204984-1767.)
nor was he good in the subject of economics while he was still a college student. In his usual self-deprecating joke, Duterte admitted he gets flabbergasted just looking at graphs tracking the economic or business activity to show gains/profits or losses. In so many words, Duterte said he only applies common sense in economics. There is no sense to continue doing business if the signs are not up but are going down, he wisecracked. But what are the President’s economic advisers for? Talks about the implications of Brexit were the hot subject matter at the reception in honor of the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth hosted by the British Embassy here last June 16. We attended it upon the invitation of the UK Ambassador to the Philippines Asif Ahmad. Ambassador Ahmad was among the foreign envoys who flew all the way to Davao City to pay courtesy call on President-elect Duterte. After having met twice with Duterte, Ahmad told me he was impressed with Duterte’s grasp of Brexit which at that time was still being debated all over UK. While he may not be into economics, Duterte promised during the presidential campaign he was willing to copy the good economic programs of his rivals and even continue the existing ones that benefit most Filipinos. At the end of six years in office, P-Noy exits from power without the usual boom-andbust cycle performance of the Philippine economy that marked the past administrations. After the Brexit, the outgoing President can take pride the Philippines is having its own Noy-xit of sustained economic growth that augurs well for the Duterte administration.
planned terrorist act.” “There is initial evidence that each of the three suicide bombers blew themselves up after opening fire,” he told reporters at the airport. Yildirim said the attackers had come to the airport by taxi and that preliminary findings pointed to Islamic State responsibility. Two US counterterrorism officials familiar with the early stages of investigations said Islamic State was at the top of the list of suspects even though there was no evidence yet. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the use of suicide bombers against “soft” targets was more typical of Islamic State than the other obvious suspect, Kurdish PKK militants, who generally attack official government targets. One of the officials also said that, while Islamic State had recently stepped up attacks in Turkey, the group rarely claims responsibility because Turkey remains one of the main corridors for its fighters travelling

However, he clarified that there is no definite plan yet – only a concept. “’Yung cable cars pinag-aaralan definitely... Ito ho, hinihiram ko ‘yung Bolivia experience kung saan mayroong mga cable car,” the incoming Cabinet official said. “Uumpishan mo muna ‘yan sa area ng Pasig, then EDSA, ito ‘yung mga gondola na may 35passenger capacity,” he added. Tugade noted cable cars are better than constructing more roads that can further worsen traffic jams. “Kaya ko napag-isipan ‘yan, kasi pag nagdagdag tayo ng kalsada at nag-construct tayo eh lalo magkakatraffic. Kung gusto mo ng additional capacity pumunta ka sa itaas,” he said. He added that installing cable cars will not only solve the traffic problem but also involves the concept of for “scenic purposes.” For the long-term, Tugade said he will suggest using cable cars from Sta. Rosa, Laguna to Makati City, with stations in between. “Pinag-aaralan po ‘yung detalye maybe, it’s not technically accurate on my part to decide, but, suffice it to say for the moment that it is seriously being looked into,” he noted. Diokno reiterated there will no be underspending under the leadership of Duterte, citing an increase in infrastructure spending to about P1 trillion from P800 billion. He also plans to propose the Budget Reform Act of 2016, which will incorporate best practices of other countries. He added that the Duterte administration is looking to increase the value-added tax (VAT) and bring down personal income tax from 32 percent to 25 percent. “Hindi naman pwedeng business as usual tayo kasi ang tax system natin ay dinisenyo noong 1997 pa at hindi na tayo competitive sa ibang bansa,” Diokno said. from Europe to Syria and Iraq. No group had claimed responsibility more than nine hours after the attack, which started around 9:50 p.m. local time (1850 GMT). The attack bore similarities to a suicide bombing by Islamic State militants at Brussels airport in March that killed 16 people. A coordinated attack also targeted a rush-hour metro train, killing a further 16 people in the Belgian capital.
‘The roof came down’
Most those killed were Turkish nationals but foreigners were also among the dead, a Turkish official said. Ali Tekin, who was at the arrivals hall waiting for a guest, said the roof came down after an “extremely loud” explosion. “Inside the airport it is terrible, you can’t recognise it, the damage is big,” Tekin said. A woman named Duygu, who was at passport control after arriving from Germany, said she threw herself to the floor after the explosion. “Everyone started running away.
Everywhere was covered with blood and body parts. I saw bullet holes on the doors,” she said. Paul Roos, 77, said he saw one of the attackers “randomly shooting” in the departures hall from about 50 meters (55 yards) away. “He was wearing all black. His face was not masked,” said Roos, a South African on his way home after a holiday in southern Turkey. “We ducked behind a counter but I stood up and watched him. Two explosions went off shortly after one another. By that time he had stopped shooting,” Roos told Reuters. “He turned around and started coming towards us. He was holding his gun inside his jacket. He looked around anxiously to see if anyone was going to stop him and then went down the escalator ... We heard some more gunfire and then another explosion, and then it was over.” President Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

him that threatens his marriage: his unshakeable attraction to men. splashes box office competition LOS ANGELES - Pixar’s “Finding Dory” floated atop the box office over the weekend, taking in $73 million and sinking the sequel to “Independence Day,” industry results showed Monday. “Dory,” voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, follows a forgetful fish on a quest to find her parents, much as she did as a supporting character in the 2003 animated hit “Finding Nemo.” The film, only in its second week in theaters, has so far reeled in $286 million in the United States. It splashed past “Independence Day: Resurgence,” which made a disappointing $41 million in its weekend debut, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. A sequel to the 1996 humans-vs-aliens summer blockbuster, the latest installment is a second helping of space invaders and special effects that has been widely panned by critics. “Central Intelligence” was third at the box office, with $18.2 million. The action-comedy about a spy who recruits a high school buddy for a caper stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart. “The Shallows,” starring Blake Lively as a surfer who is terrorized by a shark, earned $16.8 million in its debut. “The Conjuring 2,” which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as a paranormal-investigating couple, earned $7.7 million in its third week. Rounding out the top ten films of the weekend were: - “Free State of Jone” ($7.6 million) - “Now You See Me 2” ($5.6 million) - “X-Men: Apocalypse” ($2.5 million) - “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” ($2.5 million) - “Warcraft” ($2.2 million) — Agence FrancePresse

MCL of the knee:
Disclaimer: Our intent is to help the general public with general information about injury rehabilitation and exercise programs. Our opinion does not replace the opinion of a medical doctor. If your condition is serious, please consult your doctor.
Simple rehab exercises THE knees are made up of many structures that include ligaments, muscles, cartilage and other fascias. MCL in particular could be a serious injury if not treated immediately. MCL stands for medial collateral ligament that is found on the inner side of the knee that connects the femur and the tibial bone.
1st degree sprain – mild stretch of the ligament, mild pain on the medial side of the knee. 2nd degree sprain – 50%-75% tear of the ligament. Moderate pain and abnormal gait, may need crutches. 3rd degree sprain – complete tear of the MCL. Severe sprain, recommended not to weight bear (walking). Initial treatment: R.I.C.E - rest, ice, compression
and elevation. Be sure to receive treatment from your athletic therapist or physiotherapist. Clinical care is important for rapid return to work or play as the professionals will provide you with proper treatment for the different stages of your rehabilitation. Once the knee is healed and ready to return to work and play, here are two simple rehab exercises you can perform at home to maintain the muscular strength surrounding the knee joint.
1. Ball Wall Squats toe out: This exercise will focus on the quadriceps muscles especially the vastus medialis oblique of the quad. The most inner muscle of the quad that is attached close to the MCL. Complete this exercise in 3 sets of 10 repetitions every other day.
The MCL can be injured by direct blow to the outer side of the knee or medially overstretching or twisting the knee during normal activities or playing contact sports. There are three different degrees of MCL ligament sprain.
2. Adduction exercises using tubing: This specific exercise targets the inner thigh (adductor muscles) that is directly in contact with the MCL. Standing on one leg bring the other leg (that has the resistance tubing) inwards going over the stationary leg and repeat. Adjust the resistance for your comfort level. Complete this exercise in 3 sets of 10 repetitions every other day.

UFC’s Dodson is aiming for three titles simultaneously MANILA, Philippines – Surely, one cannot ever accuse UFC fighter John Dodson of selling himself, well, short (pardon the pun, John). Standing all of 5’3” and tipping the scales at 135 lbs., the American Octagon gladiator is supremely confident of himself and his skills — and is not shy about showing it. In town to drum up further interest in an already mixed martial arts-crazy country, Dodson shares in an exclusive interview with The STAR that he took the reins in his life very early. He and his younger brother Eric weren’t bullied. In fact, he insists, “We fought the bullies. We were the bully beater-uppers… All the people who wanted to join gangs, we wanted to save them from that. We thought of that as our career.” Funny and witty, he continues, “I’m from the desert. I’m from New Mexico. It’s called the land of entrapment for a reason.” Growing up in Albuquerque, Dodson had big dreams from as far back as he can remember. As a kid, he would watch animé, other cartoons, and movies where protagonists had superpowers. “They had some type of ability that allowed them to be great… so now I’m doing the exact same thing. I get to highlight the characters that make me me — and that’s having that fun personality and I enjoy life… and do it with a smile whether it is on the Octagon punching somebody in the face or somebody punching me in the face.” Dodson speaks at a hundred miles an hour, and he smiles broadly and infectiously. A perfect ambassador for the sport both owing to his impressive record in the UFC cage (seven wins, two losses), and the articulateness and enthusiasm he carries. Someone remarks that he is like a bunny, and Dodson grins. “I just don’t ever wanna sit and stop, because it sucks being bored. Only boring people are bored. Those that don’t try, fail,” he maintains, firing lessons quickly and freely. Dodson holds a black belt in the martial art of Gaidojutsu, which was developed by his longtime coach Greg Jackson. The fighting style combines wrestling and kickboxing techniques with judo locks, plus other features from grappling, Brazilian JiuJitsu and kickboxing.
When asked how he would differentiate fighting styles of lower weight classes to, say, heavyweights, Dodson insists, “We move so quickly, our technique is crisper, our punches are faster, our kicks are harder, our movements are more graceful.” The agility, he adds, is comparable to gymnasts and parkour practitioners (called traceurs). “Other weight classes throw one punch, two punches, three punches, and they’re tired.” The ultimate dream for Dodson is to hold the flyweight, bantamweight and featherweight titles at the same time. “I’m a very, very hungry person. I’m motivated,” he underscores. -By Kap Maceda Aguila

LeBron James to become free agent, near-certain to stay with Cavs For the third offseason in a row, LeBron James will be a free agent. For the second offseason in a row, there’s little doubt about where he’ll sign. The 2016 NBA Finals MVP has decided not to exercise his player option for the 2016-17 season, thereby putting him on the open market when free agency begins July 1. However, this move was considered highly likely and does not jeopardize LeBron’s promised return to Cleveland following the franchise’s first championship. It is almost entirely a financial decision. Chris Broussard of ESPN.com has the report: Finals MVP LeBron James will not exercise his player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2016-17 season, according to his agent, Rich Paul. James, who had to inform the Cavs of his decision by Wednesday at midnight, will become a free agent July 1 for the third straight summer. He was slated to earn $24 million next season. “I love it here in Cleveland. I have no intentions of leaving,” James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin during the Cavaliers’ championship parade. “There are some technicalities to take care of I’ll leave up to my agent. That’s right from the horse’s mouth.” On Tuesday night, however, Paul gave no insight into what type of contract his client would eventually sign with the Cavs or what the timetable is for his expected return to Cleveland. Again, the financials made the opt-out a nobrainer for James. If he signs a one-year contract (or similar opt-out deal) for 2016-17, he can make roughly $3 million more than he would have under the terms of the prior contract. James could then sign a multi-year deal worth well north of $30 million per season next summer, when the cap could rise to more than $100 million. If LeBron chooses to sign that long-term deal this July instead, he’ll still earn approximately $30 million per season. Although his agent gives no indication of which deal LeBron wants to sign, it’s a safe bet that the Cavaliers will let him do whatever he wants. James proved in the NBA Finals that he remains a transcendent player when necessary. Furthermore, he’s now a folk hero in Cleveland. The franchise needs him and will submit to any terms as long as he is present to receive his championship ring on opening night. .-Eric Freeman

Kiray Celis talks about doing intimate scenes with Enchong Dee Enchong Dee, the lead actor of the upcoming Regal Films movie I Love You To Death, said that he was game when he was informed of a new movie with actress Kiray Celis. Saying that he wants to do something new and experimental as he keeps doing the same things in movies, Enchong said, “Noong sinabi sa akin na si Kiray ‘yung makakasama, sabi ko, ‘go kasi kakaiba ‘to, unique.’” He added that he really wants to go back to acting. In the movie, the two will share intimate scenes. How did Kiray feel about it? Kiray, who initially cracked jokes, answered, “Wala naman akong pinipili eh… At saka in a good way naman ‘yung naglalambingan kami, hindi ‘yung kalandian lang... Sino ba namang artista ang papayag na magmukhang bastos sa isang eksena, di ba? Wala naman eh. So as much as possible, kapag okay naman, go. Ayoko sa lahat ‘yung may hinihindian talaga ako. Gusto ko kasi kapag sinabi sa akin, kaya kong gawin ‘yan. Ayokong tumatanggi kahit na sa mga roles.” Talking about what seems to
be a wild kissing scene in the movie, Enchong said that Kiray was feeling awkward as she is not used to such acting. “So when everyone (on the set) was teasing her, pinagtatawanan siya… Sabi ko, I think it’s my part to be her love team na suportahan ko siya so I just stayed quiet. I let her take her time para kapag nagsimula na kami sa eksena, magagawa na namin,” he said, adding that it took them several takes to do the scene successfully. Kiray then admitted that at first, she was hesitant to do so as, “Baka sa next movie ko kapag nagkaroon, mas grabe na dun ‘yung gagawin ko,” noting that she does not like saying no to work. Sharing how the kissing scene went, Kiray, who mentioned about their wedding in the movie, said that Enchong took the initiative as he knew that she felt nervous. “Mas grabe pa siya kay Derek. Tinalo niya si Derek sobra.” Kiray was paired
with actor Derek Ramsay in the movie Love is Blind. When asked about the better kisser, Kiray said that she has different experiences with Derek and with Enchong. “Hindi sila pwedeng i-compare. Dahil si Derek, sakto lang. Kaya nga sabi ko kanina kay Enchong, grabe siya,” implying that she was taken by surprise.-Ann Lastrilla

Ashton College Offers $8,000 Bursary to New Immigrants Nominations Now Being Accepted VANCOUVER, BC - May, 2016: New immigrants often face hardships on their path to success and for many, it is an education that helps them to realize their full potential. Ashton College is pleased to announce the nomination period for this year’s Lilian To Bursary. Released annually, the bursary is valued at $8,000 and commemorates the life of Lilian To, founder of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., a multi-service community organization providing assistance to new immigrants. Lilian To was a crusader for immigrants and worked tirelessly to champion their rights and it is in her memory that Ashton awards the bursary to up to four deserving students. “Many new immigrants face financial barriers to their education,” said Ashton President Colin Fortes. “The bursary is our way of removing these barriers and celebrating their accomplishments. We feel that Lilian would be proud.” One of the many issues new immigrants face when they arrive in Canada is not hav-
ing their educational credentials recognized. Ashton offers numerous program upgrade options for students looking to transfer their degrees, upgrade their skill set and reenter the workforce. For students to be eligible to receive the Lilian To bursary, they must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and have arrived in Canada for the first time within the past five years. Students are expected to write a brief 500 word essay detailing their financial need, purpose, and future goals as well as submit references. Applications are adjudicated by an external four judge panel with up to four bursaries officially awarded in September.
Avoiding temptation, Gretchen-Robi-style Although already of age, athlete-turnedTV host Gretchen Ho said she would never travel abroad alone with her boyfriend Robi Domingo. “That’s temptation! Our parents don’t allow us to travel [alone],” Gretchen disclosed at a recent media gathering for her latest talk show, “Modern Girls.” “We agree with them because we don’t want other people to think that we’re doing something [immoral],” she explained. “We don’t want to put ourselves at risk.” She further said that being public figures, they want to be responsible role models. “Robi and I still follow a curfew,” she added. “[Robi has a] self-imposed curfew. Often, he wants to go home early because he would need to wake up early for several projects the following day. I sleep early now that I have a morning show.” Asked by Inquirer what type of girlfriend she is, Gretchen described herself as “a balance of both traditional and modern.” The 26-year-old said she is a conservative Catholic Christian who believes in a long court-
ship. “I’m modern in the sense that I value having a career of my own alongside my partner,” Gretchen said. “It’s important for us to have two separate worlds, that’s why we don’t always work together.” She and Robi used to fight about the lack of quality time together. “Maybe because during the past years, we were on different life stages. We’re both so driven. We’re on our third year now. I feel like we’re getting to know each other better and are understanding each other more,” she said. Gretchen said they’re now able to spend more time together. “We’re always here (at the ABSCBN compound). Also, a lot of the things that were conflict points are now things that we can talk about. We compromise.” inquirer.net
Kris Aquino to appear on Marian Rivera’s morning show
horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): Returning to the basics is a significant theme today, yet the art of simplification can be quite complex. You may be motivated by dreams of success only to find yourself engaged in a very real power struggle at work. You might need to argue your case if you believe your future is worth fighting for now. But don’t be scared away by the possibility of hurting someone you love. Acting with integrity and kindness allows you to be honest in a way that helps rather than harms. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Sometimes you must hold your ground, yet other times it makes more sense to yield. It’s tempting to avoid conflict today by acquiescing to someone else. Unfortunately, a strategy of propitiation is like putting a bandage over a deep wound. Thankfully, calmly addressing your powerful feelings makes it possible to regain the trust and joy that you once thought were gone for good. Believe it or not, vulnerability is your friend.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Finding satisfaction can be an uphill battle when you’re dealing with an unhappy partner or when you recognize the pain of your unfulfilled needs. Relationship issues confront you with your own drive to be in control now as nurturing Venus opposes domineering Pluto in your 7th House of Partnerships. It’s all too easy to play the blame game, but there are no winners if anyone ends up feeling like a loser. Be truthful about your desires; expressing them in a loving manner turns a potential breakdown into a powerful breakthrough. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): There is no time to lose now when encountering unpleasant power politics at work. You may feel discouraged once you realize how little leverage you actually have in the situation today. Nevertheless, an emotional eruption won’t bring anyone closer to satisfaction. Thankfully, you can make a plan and execute it effectively if you pull back from your creative pursuits now and take on more responsibility on the job. A true professional keeps her priorities in order. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It really doesn’t take much to arouse your feelings today. You may experience alternating waves of emotional highs and lows that stimulate buried feelings of resentment or regret as an intense opposition between magnetic Venus and manipulative Pluto rocks your 5th House of Romance. Nevertheless, getting to the core of your desires can revitalize your heart. Initiating profound changes in how you pursue relationships ultimately attracts the love you desire. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You prefer change when it’s slow and steady now, motivating you to choose a more conservative route while exploring your feelings. Nevertheless, maintaining a casual attitude about your desires is nearly impossible while sexy Venus opposes fierce Pluto. You might even run into resistance at work where others underestimate your commitment. Nevertheless, you’re determined to overcome all obstacles in your current struggle to balance your emotions with your career objectives. Love doesn’t pay the bills, but it’s a poor life without it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Unresolved relationship turmoil bubbles to the surface today, stimulating questions about your future. You might think it’s best to ignore your gut reaction so you can avoid upsetting yourself or someone else. However, the hidden cost of burying your feelings now will only become more apparent over time. Dealing with your emotions as they arise could reveal practical resolutions to your problems. Fortunately, you have more support than you realize, making the present moment the best time to face the music and change your tune. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Although you may be lucky enough to be secure in your job, unspoken feelings can negatively impact a professional relationship. Control issues about money might even impede your progress on a current project at work. Thankfully, the outcome will probably open the door to new opportunities if you share your concerns now. But being honest about your assessment of the current situation could go against the grain of your peers. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Both of your feet are firmly planted on the ground today, and a minor crisis will not likely upset your balance. However, you still might struggle to compromise in a relationship because people tend to arouse your extreme attraction or total repulsion now. Although it’s tricky to find the right connection, you must rise above your emotions of the moment and think about long-term consequences. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You might feel as if you’re in the midst of a tug-of-war with your desire for security pulling one way and your obsession with personal transformation pulling the other. Pluto’s power can be emotionally overwhelming while its opposition to vulnerable Venus in your 6th House of Habits motivates you to revert to familiar routines that increase your comfort. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar 20): Emotional satisfaction may seem out of reach as control issues with those near and dear shake your faith in relationships. Maintaining a healthy perspective is challenging while sensual Venus in your 5th House of Love and Romance opposes insatiable Pluto. Fortunately, defining your desires more clearly is a necessary step toward getting what you want, both personally and professionally.
for the couple’s help in the campaign of Vice President-elect Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo. Aquino is the biggest contributor in the Robredo campaign, shelling out P30.8 million for the outgoing Camarines Sur representative. She is also set to represent outgoing President Benigno Aquino III in Robredo’s inauguration on June 30. Before appearing in Rivera’s morning show, Aquino had “KrisTV,” her own morning show on ABS-CBN. The show debuted in 2011 and was cancelled last April due to the actress’ desire to spend more time with her family and take care of her health. AJH/rga

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Slipping into denial might sound like a viable option, but suppressing emotional tension creates ripples that eventually overwhelm you. Living in the moment is a sound strategy, unless you also insist on exerting control over others for no reason now other than ego gratification. Practicing non-attachment empowers you to smoothly glide through the day, learning and sharing as you go without causing any drama. Sometimes you just need to relax and have faith that everything will be alright.
Fresh from her two-month vacation in the US, presidential sister and actress Kris Aquino is set to become a guest in the morning talk show of Marian Rivera on GMA 7 network. Aquino, an ABS-CBN talent, confirmed the news in an Instagram post on Monday. She said she would appear in the show to fulfill her promise to Rivera and her husband, Dingdong Dantes. “On Wednesday, I get to fulfill my promise to my inaanaks, @dongdantes & @therealmarian—I’m guesting in ‘Yan Ang Morning,’” Aquino said. Reports say that Aquino’s appearance in Rivera’s show is an act of gratitude

6. No one likes being stuck in traffic
without air-conditioning. And while the HVAC system is a sealed system that doesn’t require much attention, for the most part it does need attention every so often. Before you have the A/C lines cracked open--and the refrigerant, the compressor oil and the drier replaced-consider cleaning out the condenser and the evaporator first. Accumulated dust and dirt on the exterior of either one leads to blockage and reduced efficiency of the system. The condenser is easy enough to clean with nothing more than an air or water hose being run through the fins of the condenser. Cleaning the cooling fins of the evaporator is a much more involved process, and will likely require professional services, particularly if the vehicle does not have an A/C filter.
7. Park in the shade if you can’t park indoors. Doing so can help reduce interior temperatures by quite a bit. Some studies quote the cabin getting as much as 10 degrees Celsius hotter after being parked in the sun for only an hour or two. Imagine how much hotter it will get if you’re going to be leaving it out for much longer.
8. Use heat-rejecting tint or a reflective
sunshade--if you can’t find indoor parking or a shaded parking area--to help reduce interior temperatures.
9.
Crack your windows slightly open
when you have to be parked outdoors. This releases the hot air from inside the cabin instead of being trapped inside. It is a good way to aid in reducing the effects of having to park out in the sun. It doesn’t have to be large--anything just big enough to unseal each window will be a significant enough help.
10. If you have time and it’s safe to do
so, open all your doors for half a minute or so before you board. The cabin will feel slightly more comfortable than if you just hop right in.
11. Or drop all your windows as much as you safely can and turn your blower on full blast to vent out the air as you drive off. Keeping the windows closed without venting the heat will take you much longer to get the interior cool.
12. Wax your car. It prevents any road
grime, tree sap and bird droppings from directly sticking to your paint surface and getting baked onto it from the heat. Waxing also makes any substance a little easier to wash off your car’s paint job.
13. Don’t wash your car when its sheet
metal is still hot. Don’t do it either when your car is out in the sun. The water may dry up faster than you can wipe it off, leaving unsightly water marks that defeat the purpose of a wash to begin with.-Story by Ferman Lao/Artwork by Macky Joe Licup

Will priests raise a howl against Iadya Mo Kami?
FATHER. In the movie, Allen Dizon plays a priest who sires a child with his lover
ricky Lo
Several years ago, a movie titled The Priest, so to speak, stirred a hornet’s nest before it was shown in Manila theaters. Some sectors of the church raised a howl against the movie’s theme which is about a priest having a male lover. Inadvertently, they acted as effective promoter for the movie which drew people to moviehouses out of curiosity. Turned out to be much ado about nothing. Critics actually viewed the movie as pro-priesthood. The same-sex romance, made worse because one party is a holy man, scandalizes the community that petitions for the priest’s removal to another parish. But in the end, the priest, torn between the temptation of the flesh and the call of spirituality, made a soul-cleansing decision by dumping his lover in the memorable scene towards the end when he refuses to give communion to his lover who is seducing him with the suggestive movement of his tongue over his lips. Iadya Mo Kami, directed by Mel Chionglo for BG Productions (owned by Baby Go) from a screenplay by Ricky Lee, also involves a priest in a similar situation, except that instead of a male lover, the priest has a woman lover (played by Diana Zubiri) with whom he bears a child. The movie, which has won Allen Best Actor in the recent Fourth Silk Road Film Festival in Ireland, is competing with five other entries in the Filipino New Cinema Section of the World Cinema Premieres Film Festival of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) from today until July 10 (screening is at SM North EDSA and SM Megamall).
the decision to continue serving God or leaving priesthood rests solely on him.”
Doesn’t direk Mel anticipate any untoward reaction from priests?
“Not really,” insisted Mel. “I told Ricky that I didn’t want to tell a story only about a priest na nakaanak at sinundan ng babae, iniwan ang babae at bumalik sa church; I wanted a story that would show how a priest handled the challenges that I mentioned earlier. The story is also about a priest’s search for identity and spirituality.” Some priests are suggesting that the church allow them to get married and at the same time remain as priests. “I beg to disagree,” said Mel vehemently. “If you answer any calling, you must adhere to certain standards, dapat sumunod sa patakaran ng kung ano mang propesyon. Before one is ordained a priest, he is made to take a vow of celibacy and he should bear that in mind. That’s one of the sacrifices for priesthood. Otherwise, without those sacrifices, kung ganoon lang pala, eh di ang dali-dali magpari.”
“I don’t think so because the movie has a positive ending,” assured Mel. “Iba sa The Priest ang takbo ng estorya. The priest leaves his lover and resumes his calling. The movie shows that a priest who has vows of chastity, charity and obedience also suffers from challenges. A priest is also an ordinary mortal like the people that he serves. He also gets lonely, yearns for love, longs for caring, falls prey to the call of the flesh, supports rebel groups fighting the government and may become alcoholic. In view of these challenges,
funfare Canada
Is Father Greg, the priest played by Allen, a real person? “No,” clarified Mel, “it’s just a typical story kumbaga. The movie is not based on a true story. Five years ago, I was talking to my priest friend (who has died since then) about the problems confronting the church. One of the big problems concerning priests is having an affair with women and having children, not pedophilia which is the biggest issue facing the church in the US.” Since he has worked with Allen (in a few films including Twilight Dancer, as a has-been macho dancer; and in Lauriana as a soldier torn between service of country and his love for a woman; and in some TV dramas), Mel found him easy to direct this time around. (Allen has also won several awards for Magkakabaung both here and abroad.) “I told Allen that Father Greg is a quiet person. You can’t see in his face that he is going through a crisis in his life. He is in control with his actions and his emotions are always in check. His characters in other movies are very expressive, flamboyant and very physical. I am happy because Allen is a very receptive actor and is open to his director’s intentions.” Is the “positive ending” some kind of a compromise to nip in the bud a possible adverse reaction from the church?
