This was according to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Undersecretary Nicon Fameronag, who said more than half of yesterday’s applicants who trooped to the job fairs offered by the DOLE nationwide preferred to work locally and only a small percentage applied for overseas jobs. pinoys, 15

Duterte lawyer: Up to BPI to open account
DOJ chief confirms probe on Davao death squad MANILA – The Department of Justice (DOJ) has confirmed its investigation on the alleged unexplained killings perpetrated by the Davao death squad (DDS) and the supposed involvement of presidential candidate Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in the group. Acting DOJ Secretary Emmanuel Caparas confirmed a recent report of The STAR that there is an ongoing fact-finding probe by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)’s death investigation division on the existence of the DDS. “Yes, it’s in investigation stage,” Caparas said in an interview. Caparas explained that the issue has reached the department prior to his appointment as DOJ interim secretary earlier this year. He said the allegations linking Duterte to the group allegedly behind unexplained killings of suspected criminals in Davao were considered “speculative, rumor or urban legend” until last year.
“Since it reached the DOJ, we take it seriously. It was brought to the DOJ’s attention last year and it remains in the radar. There are agencies looking into the allegations,” Caparas said. Caparas, however, refused to discuss any development in the probe until the NBI has submitted its report to the DOJ. “I can’t say that there is (development) until I read the report,” he said. Caparas admitted that NBI probers have faced several challenges in the probe since last year. “There are matters or leads initially being pursued that would fade and later on surface again. Let’s just say the investigation is taking place,” he explained. The STAR earlier reported that a possible state witness, who used to be part of the DDS and has personal knowledge about the killings, has remained in government custody. The NBI is in the process of verifying the information
provided in the affidavit of the witness, who has been placed under the witness protection program. In June last year, then DOJ secretary and now senatorial candidate Leila de Lima revealed plans to investigate Duterte for his alleged involvement in the unexplained killings. De Lima said the allegations against the DDS and the mayor were “very serious and disturbing” and that the NBI would validate and build the case. Duterte, who has been leading in pre-election surveys, was earlier quoted in reports admitting his ties to the DDS. But he explained that he only replied to a question in jest and that he was referring to the Davao Development System. In March 2015, the NBI filed murder charges with the DOJ against former mayor Rey Uy of Tagum, Davao del Norte and 28 others for their alleged involvement in a death squad similar to the DDS.-Philstar
The lawyer of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said that they have asked the Bank of the Philippine Island’s branch in Makati City to disclose the amount in the presidential candidate’s accounts. In an interview outside the BPI Julia Vargas branch after his meeting with vice-presidential candidate Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Panelo told reporters that officers of the bank are asking seven days to reply to their request. Panelo said that after presenting the special power of attorney from Duterte, he asked the court for a certification of the amount of deposits in Duterte’s accounts. “Naghamon si Trillanes na buksan. Tinanggap ang hamon. Pero ang sabi ng bangko, pag-aaralan muna dahil may legal issues,” he said. He added that the bank’s officers explained to Trillanes during their meeting inside the BPI branch that the request could not be immediately granted because of certain protocols. During the interview, Panelo said he had proven after their meeting that Trillanes’ accusations that Duterte have billions in bank deposits is a fluke. “Hindi lang ito kuwentong kutsero, kuwentong barbero pa,” the lawyer said. Trillanes had accused Duterte of having P2.4 billion in bank deposits. The senator challenged Duterte to meet and ask the BPI Julia Vargas branch in Pasig City to open his bank accounts. In an earlier Balitanghali interview, Trillanes called Duterte a coward for failing to issue a waiver to open of his bank accounts. He said he had brought an affidavit as required by Duterte, but the presidential candidate still could not produce a waiver and instead Panelo asked the bank for a copy of the account balances of the bank accounts. Trillanes said Duterte’s camp also declined to provide the transaction history of the bank accounts. Panelo, meanwhile, downplayed the affidavit brought by Trillanes. “Tinanong ko si Trillanes ‘Totoo bang tao si Joseph de Mesa?’ Pero hindi niya masabi kung totoo ‘yon,” Panelo told reporters. Trillanes cited in his affidavit that De Mesa was his source of information on Duterte’s alleged millions. —ALG, GMA News

DFA: PH working for safe release of all Abu captives MANILA -- The Philippines will continue working for the safe release of foreign nationals being held captive by the Abu Sayyaf group, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. “The Philippine Government is pleased at the positive developments resulting in the safe release of 10 Indonesian nationals abducted by the Abu Sayyaf on March 26, 2016,” the DFA said in a statement released Monday. “While intensified operations continue on the ground, the DFA maintains close coordination with concerned foreign governments in ensuring the safe return of all the remaining
hostages,” it also said. The Indonesian sailors were released to Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan II on Sunday. They were brought to a military hospital for a medical checkup and were declared in stable condition despite being held captive for 37 days. The sailors were seized at gunpoint from their tugboat while in Malaysian waters. The crew had been sailing to the Philippines when they were abducted. It is unclear whether a ransom was paid for their release but the Philippine government has a no-ransom policy. The release of the 10 Indo-
nesian captives came almost a week since the Abu Sayyaf beheaded Canadian captive John Ridsdel after the deadline to pay a P300-million ransom lapsed. The Abu Sayyaf still holds four Indonesian crew members of another tugboat seized on April 1 in the waters off Sempornah, Sabah and brought to Sulu. The group, which the Philippines and the US have categorized as a terrorist group, is also holding thee remaining Samal tourists -- a Canadian, Norwegian, a Filipino woman -- a Dutch national, four Malaysians, a Chinese national and six other Filipinos.-Philstar

MANILA, Philippines – Three presidential candidates and 11 senatorial hopefuls attended the El Shaddai prayer celebration and overnight vigil hoping they would gain the support of the charismatic group’s estimated 3 million members. Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senator Grace Poe and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas were each given a few minutes to address the crowd early yesterday morning. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago did not make an appearance, but an El Shaddai officer said both were informed of the activity. The source also said that Duterte and Roxas already visited Velarde in his office in Amorsolo Street, Makati City last month. Also at the event were vice presidential candidates Sens. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Francis Escudero and senate hopefuls Sherwin Gatchalian, Rey Langit, Leila de Lima, Teofisto Guingona III, Lorna Kapunan, Martin Romualdez, Ralph Recto, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Rafael Alunan III, Francis Tolentino and Samuel Pagdilao Jr. During the prayer service, survey forms were distributed to determine the community’s choice for president and vice president. Velarde told the crowd he would reveal his choice of candidates during their regular family gathering every Tues-
Michael Velarde day. The charismatic leader assured his members of the freedom to choose their own candidates. “I would not impose on you, on your choice of individuals. I will also choose in the future,” Velarde said. He also urged the group not to believe in surveys and should instead believe in what he says because it is “the truth.” Answering the criticisms on his interference in the elections, he said, “It is the obligation of every citizen, of every faithful to participate in choosing the country’s next set of leaders.” El Shaddai is also fielding its own party-list, pro-life Buhay Hayaan Yumabong (Buhay) Party-list, which nominates Michael Velarde, former Manila City Mayor Joselito Atienza and Buhay president Melquiades Robles. – With Helen Flores

Namfrel says poll cheating still possible The National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) Systems Group is not discounting the possibility that cheating can still happen during the automated polls. Group member Fernando “JR” Contreras Jr. said indirect cheating can take place by way of trending in the transmission from the vote-counting machine (VCM) to the municipal level, where the votes are first consolidated. “I’ll just delay the transmission of those which is not on my bailiwick, for example. Then the initial report will show that I’m leading,” he said on ANC’s Headstart on Wednesday. Although altering the numbers in the VCM would be difficult, he stressed that the focus must be on the transmission and consolidation of votes. He noted that in the past two automated elections, transmission was from the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS)—predecessor of the VCM—to the municipal consolidation and to the transparency server. Should the transmission
fail, the back-up was bringing the PCOS or the flash card to the municipal level where they would have the complete election returns (ER). This year, the poll watchdog is asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to have a complete electronic copy of all ERs in order to do a separate tally and safeguard the credibility of the results. “From the last two elections, the transmission rate from the PCOS or the VCM is going lower. So there are more failures from the actual precinct site to the transparency, to the municipal level,” said Contreras. “If we get completed ER at the municipal level, then everyone can do their own tabulation,” he added. He described the precinct sites as “retail.” He said that like in manual polls, cheating happens in the “wholesale” side—the municipal level. The voter receipts, he added, clears some apprehension on the voter’s side “because the voter will see what supposedly he wrote down.”-ABS-CBN News

Guanzon said threats and intimidation to compel anyone to refrain from participation in a campaign constitute an election offense. Guanzon also tweeted that victims may sue for election offense under the Omnibus Election Code and libel under the Revised Penal Code. In a reply to Twitter users, Guanzon said that if violators use real names, the Comelec can verify their identities in the voters’ list, and those harmed can file a complaint before the Comelec. Guanzon added that Comelec has jurisdiction over election offenses while the Department of Justice has jurisdiction for offenses under penal laws. There have been reports of online bullying as the election day nears. One of the more prominent complaints comes from comedienne Melai Cantiveros, who called out a supporter of survey frontrunner Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for wishing her daughter, Amelia Lucille, be raped. In a post on her personal Instagram account, Cantiveros posted a screen capture of a message from a Duterte supporter, who accused the couple of being greedy. The woman also expressed her wish that the couple’s daughter be raped. Cantiveros and husband, Jason Francisco, are supporters of presidential candidate Mar Roxas.
Cantiveros added that she is willing to file charges against the woman, who used the name Shawie Constantino Enriquez. ABS-CBN anchor Karen Davila also took a beating online after she was accused of being biased against Duterte during the Pilipinas Debates at the University of Pangasinan last April 24. Some Duterte’s supporters took offense to some questions asked by Davila in the fast-talk portion of the presidential debate. The camp of the mayor has called for calm amid the deluge of negative comments coming from the supporters of the mayor against Davila. “The mayor takes no offense against Ms Davila. She was not at all biased. Every journalist worth her or his salt should ask probing and challenging questions. Duterte never got offended during the debate. That’s what free speech and democracy is all about as Duterte kept on explaining to us,” Duterte’s spokesperson Peter Laviña said in an interview. Veteran journalist Ellen Tordesillas also became the subject of online ridicule when she ran a story that included a photo of a deposit slip showing the account bearing the name of Duterte. The bank account, according to Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, contains millions in undeclared wealth. -Rachel Hermosura, ABS-CBN News

Philippine economy to survive poll uncertainty: analyst The Philippine economy will regain its growth momentum after the May 9 elections on strong fundamentals, regardless of who gets elected president in a cliffhanger race, an analyst said Monday. Despite election jitters, gross domestic product could expand by as much as 6.5 percent this year, outpacing the 5.8 expansion last year, Papa Securities chief market analyst Ramon Kabigting told ANC’s Market Edge with Cathy Yang. The brokerage was also considering raising its forecast of 7,800 points for Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEI), Kabigting said. The benchmark index opened 0.70 percent lower to 7,270.36 points on
Monday. “Election results are announced, just barring any extreme opposition to the outcome, I think we are going to see the market anticipate the boom and perform very well,” he said. Uncertainty over who will succeed President Benigno Aquino has forced businessmen to hold off on big investments with negative sentiment weighing on the equity market, he said. “I think that rocky patch, if it drives the prices down, that is the buying opportunity in anticipation of the much better boom time. I think the Philippines can survive any of the outcomes,
LONDON, April 25 (UPI) -- Members of a British police department were left scratching their heads when an officer snapped a picture of an unusual motor vehicle -- a giant foot. The photo, posted to Twitter by police in London’s Wandsworth borough, shows a man driving the giant, motorized foot Sunday while a woman in a captain’s uniform assists him. “Spotted near Balham Tube, a typical day in Wandsworth...(anyone have an explanation?)” the tweet read. Twitter users dug into the mystery of the mobile foot and discovered the footmobile was a promotion for the Wandsworth Arts Fringe festival. The festival said the foot was masterminded by the “Ministry of Silly Ideas.”

Diwata-1 microsatellite successfully deployed from ISS sci-tech
FBI paid more than $1.3 million to iPhone hackers, says it was ‘worth it’ Earlier this month, the FBI announced it managed to crack open the iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters — by hiring contractor hackers. Now we know roughly how much that cost the U.S. taxpayers. FBI Director James Comey suggested at an event in London on Thursday that the FBI paid more than $1.3 million to break into the iPhone. Instead of giving a precise number, Comey said it cost the agency “more than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four months, for sure.”
Reuters did the math: With Comey’s annual salary as of January 2015 being $183,300, the total is roughly $1.34 million. Comey made the comment during a questionand-answer session at an Aspen Security Forum event. He added that he thought the payment was, in his view, “worth it.” While the $1.3 million figure (and that’s a minimum) sounds like a lot to pay for one hack, it’s worth noting that various hacking challenges often offer prizes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for successful demonstration of new
vulnerabilities in software in hardware. The Justice Department last month revealed that an entity outside the government had approached it with a method that could be used to open the phone used by Syed Farook, who along with his wife killed 14 people in the December attacks before dying in a police shootout. The revelation came after a federal magistrate had directed Apple Inc. to help the FBI hack into the phone. The FBI had said that it wanted access to the phone as part of its investigation into the attacks.
MANILA, Philippines - Diwata-1, Philippines’s first microsatellite is finally sent out to space, Wednesday, to start its duty as the “eye in the sky.” With an altitude of 400 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, it was deployed at around 7:45 p.m. from “Kibo,” the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), “ onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The deployment marks the first time JEM has deployed a 50-kilogram class microsatellite. The microsatellite, engi-
neered by nine Filipino engineers from UP and the Department of Science and Technology’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute, is set to begin her 20-month-long journey to observe weather patterns, agricultural productivity, as well as disaster response and mitigation above the earth. Ariston Gonzales, one of the builders of the satellite confirmed good communication link with Diwata-1 on Thursday.

ames Reid said that he is glad to be doing a movie again after starring in the hit Kapamilya teleserye On the Wings of Love. The actor is set to topbill the upcoming movie This Time opposite his girlfriend Nadine Lustre. “I’m really excited. I mean, I miss doing movies after doing the teleserye. It’s good to be doing movies again. It’s nice that we work together,” James said in an interview with showbiz site Pep.ph. The actor said that he is more motivated to work now since he would be able to spend time with Nadine. “It’s easier to get up in the morning because, you know, you look forward to go to work. I enjoy it.” James said that their new movie tackles more about love and relationship on a deeper level. “I guess in this movie, it’s more focused on the love side when in a relationship. Unlike the other movies, it’s like cat and dog, chasing each other. This one, it really goes deep into the relationship, long distance relationship, and more on trying to find out who they are. I can’t say it’s more mature, because it’s still very light. But it’s still very easy to watch.” Nadine relayed that their new movie is lighter compared to their previous projects together. “Ito po super light siya. Parang ‘yong intensity ng mga ginawa namin—mula sa Diary
ng Panget, Para sa Hopeless [Romantic], [On the Wings of Love], pataas nang pataas [ang intensity]. Kasi nga summer movie siya kaya gusto namin na parang sobrang light lang siya, cheesy lang.” When asked if she discovered something new about James while working on the film, Nadine responded, “Nakakatawa po kasi wala. But she realized, “I guess nalaman ko lang na marunong pala siyang magplantsa.” She also shared that their schedule has been very packed recently because they are promoting their movie. “Actually parati pa rin pong magkasama. Sa shoot lang po nagkakaiba ng schedule. Like lately, kapag wala po ako shoot, nasa promo po ako. Si James, after ng eksena niya, promo din po siya. So, ‘yong schedule po namin, sobrang packed po.” James and Nadine just came off their world tour of the Middle East and Europe. New anti-movie piracy and Illegal downloading campaign launched In celebration of World Intellectual Property Day last April 26, exhibitors, movie studios, TV show creators, indie filmmakers, music producers, as well as government agencies teamed up to drive awareness on the impact of internet-based infringement and to strongly encourage Filipinos to patronize safe and legal sources for entertainment content. In the Philippines, close to 200 million pirated movies and TV shows were estimated to have been shared on P2P networks last year. This indicates that Pinoys are actively engaged in online infringement activities and consume a significant amount of bandwidth to do so. “Creators are not the only ones harmed by content piracy. Unscrupulous individuals and organizations also prey on users of these sites for identity theft and other malicious scams. Each illegal access costs creators of movies, music, and TV shows significant losses in revenue, but it also means serious threats to the users’ online security,” explained Wilson Tieng, President of Solar Entertainment. Majority of copyrighted con-
tent being shared and consumed illegally on torrent sites worldwide consists of film (33%), television (15%), and music (7%). Pornography content was the second most downloaded content at 30%, which raises alarm that such illicit content can be easily accessed by everyone including the youth. “Each illegally downloaded movie makes it difficult for artists to craft high quality, creative films, and deprives filmmakers the opportunity to pursue ambitious new projects due to the inability to recoup production costs,” explained Regional Director Taw Won Cha of the Korean Copyright Commission Manila. To help raise awareness on the importance of respecting copyrighted content, the Intellectual Property Office Philippines (IPOPHL), Motion Picture Association (MPA), United States Embassy, and the Korean Copyright Commission (KCC), along with the country’s videoon-demand service providers iflix, Blink, and HOOQ, launched a video making contest for Manila-based film students called Rise Against Movie Piracy Philippines or RAMP-PH. Videos must illustrate the
dangers of illegally downloading copyrighted content and must also promote the importance of avoid using valuable bandwidth to support illegal
online activities, and create awareness for the legitimate options for films, TV, and music. Submission of entries is from May 1 to August 6 with the
awarding on September 6. For more details about the contest, visit the Rise Against Movie Piracy page on Facebook. -Rhea Manila Santos

None of my business Shaina Magdayao would rather not comment on the rumored romance between John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. John Lloyd is Shaina’s ex-boyfriend while Bea is one of her showbiz friends. “I don’t think kailangan kong mag-react,” replied Shaina when asked to react on the rumor, in an interview on Thursday. “That’s totally out of the environment kung saan ako gumagalaw ngayon, and it’s actually none of my business.” The Kapamilya actress added she would rather focus on her work than meddle with the personal lives of her co-celebrities. “Bakit ka pa gagawa ng friction with any other individual?” she said. “I’m just here, sa showbiz, sa mundong ito to work. And that’s it, nothing else. Lahat itong ginagawa ko, it’s just work.” “My personal life is bigger than this world,” she added. Now Shaina is happily single and pointed out that “walang kinalaman yung pagiging happy ko as a single person sa kanila,” referring to the recent breakup of John Lloyd and Angelica Panganiban. Asked if there’s a chance for her to get back with her ex-boyfriend, Shaina replied, “Ayoko magsalita kasi wala naman po nangyayari pa.” She’s also not dating anybody now since she’s busy with her work. Shaina is starring in the second season of “Single, Single” with Matteo Guidicelli that will air on May 15, and a movie with Enrique Gil.-Joyce Jimenez
three-page resolution made by the CA and signed by Judge Ma. Luisa Quijano-Padilla said that Willie did not give them new counter-arguments to turn the case around. “We have carefully reviewed our decision vis-a-vis the motion for reconsideration and we have found that the issues raised in the present motion and the arguments advanced in support thereof are a mere rehash of those already considered and passed upon, and no new issue or substantial argument has been presented to justify the reversal or modification of the assailed decision,” the report said.
Before the case went up to the CA, Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Roberto Buenaventura issued a warrant of arrest for the host last October 4, 2013 but he was bailed out instantly. The CA defended the QCRTC and said that they have not “committed no grave abuse of discretion” and “there is probable cause for the petitioner’s commission of a crime, his arrest and arraignment should now ensue so that this case may properly proceed to trial, where the merits of both parties’ evidence and allegations may be weighed.”-Joan Leary

As expected, all sorts of allegations are being thrown in these “last two minutes” of the presidential race. Several legal experts contend that Trillanes should have exposed his allegations earlier. Perhaps a Senate investigation should have been called like what they did to Vice President Jojo Binay. We have been witness to many presidential elections and from my experience, it would seem that once there is an avalanche of support and defections, it would be very difficult to stop it from rolling over everything in its path – unless of course a believable issue is exposed. We recall the 2010 presidential elections when Manny Villar’s initial lead began going on a steady decline

The hacking exposed the vulnerability to cybercrime not just of the US Federal Reserve but also the Philippines: at least $81 million of the amount was laundered through the country’s casinos and banking system, with the hackers still unidentified.

At least those who hacked the Commission on Elections website were less sophisticated, with the main culprits now being rounded up by the National Bureau of Investigation. Jonel de Asis, who released the data online, was remorseful when presented by the NBI to the media on Friday. But the first to fall, Paul Biteng, is unapologetic and is even reveling in his notoriety. Apparently he believes his caper will land him a good job in his chosen field, information technology. Perhaps Biteng’s hope will be realized. But before this happens, he must be penalized for his crime, which can create trouble for a lot of people affected by the data breach, particularly overseas Filipino workers. Letting him off with a slap on the wrist will reward crime and guarantee copycat attacks. Authorities may be swamped with hacking cases perpetrated by psychopaths who think cybercrime is a sure ticket to a good job. The country has enough IT experts, and many of them are surely better than the Comelec hackers. These experts can help the government deal with data breaches without breaking the law. Government agencies can pay experts to hack into their systems to expose vulnerabilities. Hacking the BSP website can have dire consequences. Those who think hacking is little more than a harmless video game must be disabused of that juvenile idea.

Hacking: A threat to our electoral process A
close friend of mine just emailed me an article from Huffington Post entitled “Top Six Ways Hackers Could Disrupt an Election” written by Michael Gregg, COO Superior Solutions. Let me reprint the premise of this article, which should be of great interest to our readers. Could hackers swing a US election? “With the 2016 presidential race already well underway, it’s time for us to take cyber threats to our electoral process much more seriously. Over the years, a number of security researchers, ‘ethical hackers’ and government agencies have warned about the risks, but little has been done to prevent these attacks. Hacking just a few electoral districts could allow an attacker to swing an election in a close race. The US has had close elections multiple times in the past. In 1960, John F. Kennedy squeaked out a victory over Richard Nixon by just 0.1 percent. In the 2000 presidential election, the decision came down to just a few votes in Florida. In the end, the Supreme Court had to determine the winner.” While this article talks about the hotly contested elections in the United States, but in truth, it might as well be talking about
W
ITH just 11 days before Election Day, we should ignore survey reports on the claimed popularity of candidates. The poll results are mostly mind-conditioning devices tricking the gullible to jump onto the supposed winner’s bandwagon and thereby validate the poll claims. An eerie note is that sometimes the “winning” camp posts a claim that the only way their candidate would lose is for his rivals to steal the election from him – with a warning that robbing him of victory would ignite violent protests. We all know that in da Pilipins nobody loses an election, he is just cheated. Sometimes we think that if popularity surveys were indeed reliable measurements of public sentiment, this impoverished country would save a mountain of money and avoid deep partisan division by replacing costly elections with popularity surveys. After all, Philippine elections are basically nothing but popularity and money contests. On April 29, 2010, Postscript raised the same warning against being misled by popularity surveys amid propaganda of Candidate X – who claimed he was a sure winner on the basis of the surveys then – that the only way he would lose was for him to be
What is happening to our country today reminds Bobit S. Avila me of what Russian Premier Josef Stalin once said, “It’s not the people who vote that count. It’s the people who count the votes! elections in the Philippines. Talk to any IT person or geek and he or she would tell you right away that no matter how complicated anyone’s security systems are, they can be hacked. This is why I scoffed at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for boasting that their systems couldn’t be hacked…but in the end, Comelec officials are profuse in their apologies that they have been hacked.
Anti-Cybercrime Law. Now just imagine if someone was really dead serious in hacking into the Comelec’s website during the crucial period while the votes are being counted? It would be devastating to our electoral process, where the results can no longer be verified and what comes out is nothing but gibberish. Then what options do we have? There are no provisions for run-off elections.
I dare you Google “Hacker arrested” and you will see numerous links of hackers getting caught. One such hacker was just a 15-year-old boy. Take the case of the 23-year-old Paul Biteng who was recently arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for hacking into the Comelec’s website last month. This kid who allegedly belonged to Anonymous Philippines wasn’t even remorseful for what he did… and even asked for a “Selfie” with his arresting officer. In Cebuano we say, “Walay buot!”
This is why in my book, Congress made a terrible mistake in introducing Electronic Voting Systems into our laws. We should have stuck to the old paper and pencil manual voting where hackers simply just can’t disturb the voting process. Sure it wasn’t a perfect system…but it was far superior in the sense that the electorate knows that his vote can still be counted.
disclosure system was knocked offline by hackers in 2013 – and last month, a new government report found that the FEC still failed to implement basic security measures to prevent it from happening again. The Argonne National Laboratory conducted a security review of electronic voting machines in 2012 and found that many widely used models were trivially easy to hack, potentially allowing for votes to be changed. We should be scared that this would happen here on May 9th.
Here are examples that the Huffington Post article mentioned. According to Verizon’s 2015 Data Breach Investigations report, the public sector has the highest rate of “crime ware” infections of any industry sector. The Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) campaign finance
I’m sure that sinister groups who want to sow intrigue and chaos during the elections could resort to hacking for the purpose of interfering with the counting of votes and installing malware virus to destroy the credibility of the election results. If a kid like Paul Biteng can do it… it

is easy enough to hire a true IT geek to hack into the Comelec’s computer systems or worse, shut down all the Optical Mark Reader (OMR). A week ago, some 100 priests from the Cebu Archdiocese trooped to the San Pedro Calungsod Shrine in SRP led by his Excellency Arch. Jose Palma to watch the PowerPoint presentation of Atty. Glenn Chiong entitled “Anatomy of Fraud: How can we prevent Automated Electoral Fraud.” I have already seen this PowerPoint presentation last March 12th and it is truly disturbing that the Filipino vote is unaware that his votes were manipulated. What is happening to our country today reminds me of what Russian Premier Josef Stalin once said, “It’s not the people who vote that count. It’s the people who count the votes!” This Saturday April 30th, the Cebu Catholic Television Network (CCTN) will host Atty. Glenn Chiong to do the same PowerPoint presentation to the public. I have asked the permission of Oasis of Love Servant Leader Tatay Dodong Limchua that I would cover this event on MyTV channel 30 in Cebu so that the public will know that what we’ve been writing about since the 2010 and 2013 elections really happened.
Why we must not trust survey reports Federico D. Pascual Jr.
POSTSCRIPT cheated. The camp of Candidate X was priming the people for taking to the streets – in a clumsy rerun of the EDSA Revolt of 1986 – to grab back the victory that he claimed in advance would be snatched from him. Shortly after my Postscript came out, I found among my email a note from Celia Laurel, the widow of the late Vice President Doy Laurel. She must have been so aggravated by the incendiary propaganda that she took time to write me. Celia said: “I was reminded of the 1949 presidential elections, when it was widely perceived that Jose P. Laurel was cheated. Furious Batangueños led by leaders like Col. Poling Valeriano and Francisco Medrano wanted to start a revolt in protest. “But Dr. Laurel calmed them down saying ‘The presidency is not worth a revolution – I don’t want to go down in history as the man who plunged the country into a bloody revolution that turned it into a banana republic.’
Sometimes we think that if popularity surveys were indeed reliable measurements of public sentiment, this impoverished country would save a mountain of money and avoid deep partisan division by replacing costly elections with popularity surveys. “At a more recent occasion – the EDSA Revolution to be precise – it is said that when Gen. Fabian Ver begged President Marcos to allow him to fire at the mammoth crowd that had congregated on EDSA, Marcos vehemently objected to the plan and forbade Ver to take any drastic action that would hurt the people even if they were rallying against him and could unseat him. “Both leaders showed nobility of character and a true and selfless love of country. “Today things are quite the opposite. As you said: ‘The line being developed is that Candidate X is a sure winner by all indications, including surveys. The only way he can lose is if he is cheated. When cheated, people should take to the streets to claim the victory snatched from him.’ “We are warned that ‘People Power’ would take place. “As you wrote, ‘this is dangerous and irresponsible.’ Indeed it is! It is obvious they don’t care what happens to our people as long as they have their way.
“EDSA I was a brief shining moment in our history. It was hailed and marveled at throughout the world because it was an uncanny spiritual experience – a revolution – achieved through peace, goodwill and prayers. It was a moment that should always live in our hearts. “But is ‘People Power 2010’ intended to be peaceful as well? Or is it a dismal foreboding that we shall witness a grim reenactment of the carnage that took place in the Mendiola and Doña Luisita massacres IF we don’t make Candidate X win?” Beware of ‘desktop’ poll surveys ASSUMING the “surveys” are not mere Desktop creations put together for paying customers, how can a tiny sample of 2,000 unidentified individuals allegedly picked at random represent the sovereign wish of a universe of 55,739,911 voters registered in the country and abroad? We have seen how difficult it is for a president elected by a mere plurality of 23 percent (instead of a democratic majority of 50 percent-plus-1) to
unite this fractious nation and govern effectively. What more of the supposed choice of a minuscule .00358 percent of the electorate? Yes, .00358 percent is what 2,000 interviewees out of 55,739,911 registered voters represent. That is assuming it is true that field workers actually interviewed in three or four days 2,000 respondents representing the voters registered in the country’s 81 provinces, 1,634 cities and towns, and 42,036 barangays with 369,133 established poll precincts. No wonder, some candidates consistently leading in surveys had actually lost in past presidential elections and some candidates trailing in the polls won in the final official count. The population is not homogenous. It is heterogeneous, stratified into half-dozen economic classes distributed in an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands. The classes and sub-sets, differentiated based on various criteria, are motivated by sometimes conflicting needs. Then there are the “command votes” whose individual preferences are not, and cannot be, reflected, in a general survey. How does one factor into the survey, for instance, the Iglesia ni Cristo, the Solid North, the Quiboloy flock, the bailiwicks of the local warlords, et cetera?

Julia on real score with Coco:
Hindi dapat babae ang sasagot
Julia Montes can’t help but blush when asked about the real score between her and Coco Martin. The two have been linked with each other since they starred in the TV series “Walang Hanggan” in 2012. “Hindi ko po alam. Hindi po dapat babae ang sasagot,” she replied when asked why they’re consistently linked to each other, during the press conference of “Doble Kara” on Friday. “Busy pa po kasi ako. Focus muna po ako sa work,” she added. “Hindi ko nga po alam kung ano ako paguwi ko, Kara o Sara, so do’n muna po ako mag-focus ngayon.” After the press conference, Julia was asked more about the real score between her and Coco. “‘Yong communication hindi naman po naputol,” she said. “Super iba lang ang communication namin ngayon.” When asked what’s different with their communication, Julia blushed and replied, “‘Wag po talaga ako, ‘wag na ako. Siya na lang po tanungin n’yo ng mga tanong n’yo.” The Kapamilya actress is just happy that “ang friendship namin strong, and I can say na kung sino mapagkakatiwalaan ko, relax ako, komportable ako, siya talaga.” Julia is now busy with the next season of the afternoon series “Doble Kara” as the twins Kara and Sara enter the word of motherhood. This is the reason Julia said she can’t schedule a cameo in Coco’s primetime series “Ang Probinsiyano.”Joyce Jimenez

Matteo Guidicelli
denies engagement with Sarah Geronimo Matteo Guidicelli has clarified that he and girlfriend Sarah Geronimo are not yet engaged. “No, that’s not true,” he replied when asked to confirm the engagement, in an interview on Thursday. “There were rumors, people were texting me, congratulating me [but] we’re not engaged.” The 26-year-old actor was also asked if he has plans to propose to Sarah since she’s turning 28 this July. Matteo said he’s not sure if it’ll happen this year, what he’s only sure is that “we still have a lot to do first.” “There’s stuff that I want to fulfill for myself, and her also. If it’ll happen, it’ll happen,” he added. The Kapamilya actor is just happy that they still find time to see each other despite their busy schedules. Matteo currently stars in ABS-CBN’s
primetime series “Dolce Amore” and Philstar TV’s “Single, Single” that airs in Cinema One. Some of their sightings were last February during their Valentine’s Day celebration, and in March for the celebration of the actor’s birthday in Cebu. They were recently spotted at the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Pampanga and last night in Bonifacio Global City. There were speculations that Matteo’s camp is the one releasing these photos in different social media sites, something that the actor denied. “We’re public personalities, so people take our photos,” he concluded. The season two of Matteo’s TV series “Single, Single” with Shaina Magdayao will air on May 15 in Cinema One.-Joyce Jimenez
Prince died without a will, six siblings likely to share fortune Music superstar Prince left no known will when he died last week, his sister said in court documents on Tuesday listing his six siblings or half-siblings as heirs to a legacy estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars. The sister, Tyka Nelson, asked that a special administrator be appointed to handle Prince’s affairs and that she be appointed to probate his estate. In documents filed in a state court in Carver County, Minnesota, Nelson listed herself and five other siblings or half-siblings as Prince’s heirs but gave no value of his assets or debts. Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, was married and divorced twice. Under Minnesota law, Prince’s assets are likely to be split evenly between the siblings, according to attorney Stephen Hopkins. The value of his music catalog alone has been estimated at over $500 million, according to Prince’s first manager, Owen Husney. That included potential licensing rights for film, TV, commercials and videogames that Prince rarely exploited, Husney said last week. The influential singer, musician and songwriter behind hits like “Purple Rain” was found dead at age 57 on Thursday in an elevator at his Paisley Park Studios compound in a Minneapolis suburb. The cause of death was not yet known. Michael Kosnitzky, a New York- and Miami-based attorney who advises the extremely wealthy, said he was surprised Prince had died without a will, given the artist’s tendency to
control his image, likeness, name and recordings. “... That he would put himself in a position that he would lose control of those things at death I found very surprising,” Kosnitzky said. “What is to stop someone who controls his estate from saying that they’re going to promote purple Skittles?” he said, referring to Prince’s signature color and the popular candy, adding that he did not think Prince would approve. In her court filings, Nelson said she did not know of the existence of a will and had “no reason to believe that the Decedent executed testamentary documents in any form.” She proposed the Bremer Bank in Minnesota as special administrator, saying it had done business for years with Prince. Since his death, sales of his albums have soared; more than 2.3 million songs and some 580,000 albums have sold since Thursday, according to Nielsen Music. [nL2N17S1QA} Aside from royalties from his more than 30 albums, Prince regained ownership of his master recordings after a dispute with his Warner Bros. (TWX.N) music label. He was also said to have a cache of unheard recordings, including an album cut with late jazz trumpet great Miles Davis. Hopkins, the Minnesota attorney, predicted a long, drawn-out case over Prince’s assets, probably lasting years.-Alex Dobuzinskis and Jill Serjeant, Reuters

We have two weeks left until we head for the polls to elect a new President. As concerned motorists, we’re hoping that the new head of state will be someone who has the capability and know-how to face the country’s horrible traffic situation--an issue which presidential hopefuls tackled during last night’s ABSCBN-organized debate at the University of Pangasinan. Halfway through the program’s second segment, the organizers played a video highlighting our traffic problems through the eyes of a concerned commuter named Aling Perla. It ended with this question: “As candidates, what solution can you give us to address the worsening traffic not just on EDSA and in Manila, but in the whole Philippines as well?” As we’ve written before, we are not endorsing any of the five presidentiables. But to give our readers a clearer idea of what the candidates plan to do to improve our motoring lives, we’ve compiled their replies to the above-mentioned question. MIRIAM DEFENSORSANTIAGO First, we have to build a new railway system connecting Manila to the interconnected provinces like Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna. Secondly, we have to have an entirely new railway

and private. And then he should lean on the LTO to make sure that those who get licenses are qualified persons because you can buy a license any time. So there are ways of solving the traffic problem, and there is no need to despair. Help should be coming, but I know where the funds or who are to fund these projects except that I might go overtime. Number one, if we build infrastructure. Number two, if our manufacturing is robust. And number three, if our agriculture is modern. R O D R I G O DUTERTE There is no silver bullet and magic to solve the traffic problem now. And the six years that’s given to the President, maybe I would take about a year or two to improve. One MRT, LRT...and build another as suggested by...mangopya ako kay Madam Santiago. We have to build new railways, the fastest and where, maybe along Pasig River, kasi hindi ka na magbibili ng road for right of way. But just the same, I have to improve the present situation.
So I will ask LRT and MRT to add more trains, and it should be like every 10 or five minutes na mayroong train, so that we can hold people and also limit, I said, the streets to the motor vehicles. We are pumping in 300,000-plus motor vehicles every month. E yan, papasok lahat yan sa ating highway, sa ating EDSA. Saan natin ilagay yan? And we cannot stop them except that we have to improve the mass transit of people, then try to explain that one by one those dilapidated and earlier models must be out of EDSA. That’s the only solution that can [happen]. Nothing else would really solve the problem. That’s the reality on the ground. Kailangan may disiplina.
Limang taon lang from Manila to Dagupan, natapos na nila, tayo hanggang ngayon wala pa.

(Junie Josue, Lead Pastor, International Worship Centre, 1077 St James Street, Winnipeg Manitoba, 204-774-4478)

Fameronag said as of 1 p.m. yesterday, they have recorded a total of 22,036 job applicants nationwide, more than half of whom wanted domestic employment. Fameronag further noted that of those who applied, almost 11,283 have qualified or have been referred for an interview, while 2,292 were hired on-the spot (HOTS). “We have already posted 36.1 percent HOTS, with 497 of those hired for local employment,” Fameronag said. In Metro Manila, DOLE National Capital Region (NCR) director Nelson Hornilla said for the first time, more local jobs were offered in the Labor Day job fair and many of the jobseekers also applied for local employment. Hornilla said 17,000 local jobs were opened to jobseekers as compared to only 15,000
overseas jobs. Of the more than 1,000 registered applicants, 320 were hired-on-the-spot, with local employment accounting for 265 of the job placements. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the DOLE is grateful that there were more job opportunities, both local and overseas, offered in the last Labor Day job fair to be mounted by the Aquino administration. “We are hopeful that we will achieve our target of 25 percent HOTS this Labor Day,” Baldoz said, adding that in 2010 DOLE registered 10 percent HOTS. She said all of the participating employers are operating labor-compliant companies.

By the end of one year, 144 ang madadagdag na bagon. Naka-bid-out na yan. Kaya lang hindi ho natutupad, hindi ho nangyayari. vit and shed his immunity as a senator. The bank account issue will most likely not make a dent on Duterte’s standing. In fact, the tables seem to be turning against Trillanes judging from the reaction of many Netizens who are outraged at what they called a breach of privacy and a violation of the bank secrecy laws, with some even closing down their BPI accounts (and exhorting others to do the same) in protest of the bank’s initial silence. The mayor said he will have the bank account opened by his lawyers to disprove the claims of Trillanes. People close to Duterte say the mayor has many wealthy contributors but they deny he has billions in his personal account. They say what he has is “unexplained poverty, not unexplained wealth” – adding that the mayor has been known to turn down big cash contributions from those who expect a quid pro quo, and that millions of volunteers spend their own money for campaign paraphernalia from ballers to T-shirts to stickers. Analysts trying to dissect the “Duterte phenomenon” point to the mayor’s image as a strong leader as a big part of the attraction, with people looking for someone who could put the fear of God in criminals and terrorists. This has come to the fore once again in light of the recent beheading of Canadian John
Ridsdel by Abu Sayyaf terrorists. At this point, people are just so disappointed at the perceived weakness and lack of empathy from the people who have been in power for too long. Come hell or high water, they seem ready to gamble on someone like Duterte who promises swift justice and quick action. The Duterte phenomenon cuts across all classes and demographic profiles – from the ordinary to the wealthy. At the recent Presidential Dialogue organized by the Makati Business Club and the Management Association of the Philippines (please see photos on our “This Week on PeopleAsia” column at the Allure section of the STAR today), the Manila Peninsula’s Rigodon Ballroom was jam packed with the country’s top businessmen to see Duterte up close. Although there were those who expressed disappointment that the mayor did not elaborate on his economic policy, many were also assuaged by his promise to keep the country safe. During his speech, Duterte made special mention of Manny Pangilinan whom he described as “a businessman with a heart” – signaling to many that Duterte is cognizant of the contribution of various business sectors and industries in the country’s economic and social development. For sure, this last week be-
fore the elections will be crucial for those trailing behind not only in the presidential and vice presidential race but even the senatorial race. But what is extremely disturbing are persistent rumors that there will be attempts to manipulate the results and dislodge the real winners. However, our “techy” contact at the Comelec assured us that this is virtually impossible – unless they get the source codes which is unlikely to happen because they would need to get the two sets – one of which is securely kept in escrow at the Central Bank which has been described as the “most secured place” in the country. And knowing Central Bank governor Amando “Say” Tetangco – there is absolutely no way he will allow this happen. If cheating takes place especially at this time when emotions are extremely high – it can only spell disaster for the country. The followers of the frontrunners seem very committed and are prepared to die for it. Their anger and dissatisfaction at the current system is very real. A foreign journalist who has been covering elections in the country for years tells me he has never seen anything like it. “They are like a cult,” he says. These are the last two minutes of the game. And like what a referee in a fighting match would always tell the boxers – let’s keep it clean.

The 47-year-old actress graces the cover of People’s 27th annual “World’s Most Beautiful” double issue. “I thought, ‘Oh my God,’” Aniston tells People in this week’s cover story upon hearing the news. “There was this sort of very
excited, teenage-y kind of moment.” The actress, who gained fame as Rachel on “Friends,” also tells the magazine that she’s learned to embrace her appearance over the years, and feels her best when she’s healthy and strong. She says she became motivated to take care of herself early in her career, when her agent told her she didn’t get a part because she was too chubby. “It’s funny, it’s a really quick transition from, not a care,

other Nature has been kind to us,providing us with beautiful sunshine. We spend more time outside hoping for shorts and flip-flop weather. Even though it still feels chilly outside, it is time to start working on our yard. Lucky for me our yard is not too large. It took me and my husband about 20 minutes to rake our front lawn. If you have a bigger lawn to rake and its taking you days to complete, you may be feeling low back pain or even shoulder and elbow pain. Due to the continuous motion of raking, joints and muscles may become sore due to repetitive motions. Most of the time, we use only the dominant hand and therefore it stresses one side of the body when pulling and twisting. To avoid overusing one side try to alternate your handles. It will not feel natural but it will give the strong side a rest.

Daniel Cormier vs Jon Jones in UFC 200 main event, July 9 There was no surprise on Wednesday when the UFC announced on “Good Morning America” that the main event of UFC 200 will be a rematch between champion Daniel Cormier and interim champion Jon Jones for the light heavyweight belt on July 9 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Jones, then the outright champion, routed Cormier in the main event of UFC 182 on Jan. 3, 2015, in Las Vegas, taking a lopsided unanimous decision. But Jones had a series of legal problems after that and he was stripped of his title in April 2015 when he was involved in a hit-and-run traffic accident in Albuquerque, N.M., where he trains. Cormier won the vacant title in his absence, submitting Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the second round of UFC 187 on May
23 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The bout replaces Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz II, which was to be the main event until the UFC yanked it when McGregor balked at participating in promotional activities. The Jones-Cormier rematch was originally scheduled for UFC 197 on April 23 in Las Vegas, but Cormier injured his left leg in training and had to pull out. Jones then fought Ovince Saint Preux for the interim title and won a unanimous decision. When Cormier’s physician cleared him on Monday, the fight was all but official. The two have a contentious history and have had to be separated numerous times. They got into a brawl in the lobby of the MGM Grand in September 2014, leading to both be-
ing punished by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Their match is the third title fight on the show. Frankie Edgar will meet Jose Aldo in a rematch of a 2013 bout for the interim featherweight title.
Miesha Tate willl also defend the women’s bantamweight belt against Amanda Nunes. A non-title heavyweight bout between ex-champion Cain Velasquez and Travis Browne is also slated.
UFC president Dana White has said he wants to add Diaz to the card, but Diaz said at a news conference in Las Vegas that he doesn’t want to fight if it is not against McGregor.- Kevin Iole, Cagewriter
Floyd Mayweather strongly hints at comeback, says ‘crazy numbers’ offered ONLY eight months since he announced his retirement, Floyd Mayweather opened the door to a comeback on Saturday during an interview with
Showtime’s Jim Gray. Mayweather, who pro moted Badou Jack’s majority draw with Lucian Bute on Saturday in Washington, D.C., in a match for the WBC super middleweight title, said he’s been in talks with CBS and Showtime, whom he worked with for the final six fights of his legendary career. Asked by Gray if he would
come back for the money or the opportunity to raise his record to 50-0, Mayweather laughed and said, “Both.” He said several times he was happy in retirement, but he didn’t slam the door on a return to the ring. “Yes, I’m happy to be where I’m at,” Mayweather said to Gray. “Everyone is asking, asking me, ‘Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?’ Right now, I’m happy on this side [of the ropes], but I’ve been talking with CBS and Showtime and you just never know. But for now, I’m happy on this side. “As of right now, you know, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way, upwards of, of course, nine figures. I’m truly blessed, way
beyond belief. I don’t know what we’re going to do, but right now, I’m happy being on this side helping fighters.” Floyd Mayweather kneels in the ring after his victory over Andre Berto in September. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)He ruled out a fight with middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, saying that Golovkin should fight light heavyweight Andre Ward. Ward is already signed to fight light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev later this year. “How can Floyd Mayweather fight at 160 and I could never make 154?” he said, conveniently ignoring the fact that he won the super welterweight title twice. Gray asked Mayweather about the possibility of facing Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs), who won the WBC welterweight belt that Mayweather surrendered when he retired. He seemed far more receptive
to that match. “Danny Garcia, another name, undefeated prospect, undefeated champion in two different weight classes,” Mayweather said. “Very exciting fighter. You just never know.” Keith Thurman, the 26-0 WBA welterweight champion, meets Shawn Porter in one of the year’s most anticipated bouts on June 25 in Brooklyn. Gray asked Mayweather about the potential of facing the winner, but he didn’t seem interested in either of them. “Thurman and Porter, both are exciting fighters,” Mayweather said. “I like being on this side, but that’s a good matchup. I’m happy with being on this side. Every day, everyone is asking this, ‘Floyd, are you coming back?’ All I want to do is continue to build my company, Mayweather Promotions, [and] help these fighters become world champions like Badou Jack.” -Kevin Iole

Jericho Rosales on working with Arci Muñoz: ‘Excited lang ako kasi it’s a new partnership’ Jericho Rosales is set to topbill a new soap in ABS-CBN with Arci Munoz titled Never Ever Say Goodbye. In an interview with the actor, he shared that he is going to play the role of an ex-convict who happens to be in love with Arci’s character in the upcoming show. “[Ang role ko is] ex-convict na romantic, as usual, pero mangingisda siya. Lover siya ni Arci at may best friend siya na si John (Estrada). Isa siyang ex-convict na struggling to have a good life and at the same time para makamtan niya muli ang pinakamamahal niya mula nong bata pa siya,” he said. The actor admitted that he is actually nervous but excited to be doing a soap again. “Kasi siyempre alam ko na darating ‘to, ganon naman ang buhay ko eh pagkatapos ng isang show, ng isang movie, hintay, relax. Choice ko ‘yun eh tapos pag medyo lumampas na ako ng dalawang buwan, tatlong buwan doing my own thing feeling ko lagi, ‘Baik eskwela naman ako’ so ‘yun but ito na magsisimula na kami and ‘yung nervousness slowly becoming excite-
ment.” It will be the first time that Jericho gets to work with Arci. On what he is looking forward to working with the actress, he said, “[She’s] beautiful. Unfortunately hindi ko pa napapanood ang last film niya with Gerald (Anderson) and Dan (Villegas, director) I liked to watch that. I’m excited because I think we have a lot of things in common like music. Di ba naririnig ko na she’s a fun, loving girl so masaya sa set and excited lang ako kasi it’s a new partnership.” Jericho has been doing project after
project. What is the secret to his success? “God is good. Feeling ko parang I give kasi may heart and soul 101 percent and siyempre iniingatan ko ‘yung relationships dito sa industry and above all I never forget my purpose which is to give hope and inspiration sa mga trabaho kong ganyan eh. Always be humbe lang, allow yourself to be guided,” he said. Jericho’s son Santino has been earning followers online recently. The actor was
asked if whether or not he will allow his son to enter showbiz. He responded, “Susuportahan ko siya kung ano ang kanyang gagawin pero I am 100 percent sure kasi lagi kaming nag-uusap na sports ang gusto niya. Okay siya mag-commercials pag may dumating na pagkakataon pero to parang to give priority sa showbiz or I mean to think about it wala siyang time eh. School five days a week and then ang training niya four to five times a week also. Even on Sundays nasa training siya.”Kristhoff Cagape

Jake denies work is the reason why he’s single Jake Cuenca currently has his hands full. Aside from being part of “Ang Probinsyano,” he will soon start taping “Because You Love Me,” a television series also starring Yen Santos and Gerald Anderson. He, however, denied that his busy work schedule is the reason why his love life has to temporarily take the backseat. “No way. Kayang-kaya yan [pagsabayin]. Actually, love inspires you to be the best that you can be,” he said. “Siguro nandoon ako sa proseso na minamahal ko ulit ang sarili ko. Bago ako magmahal ulit, kailangan mahalin ko muna ang sarili ko.” Last month, Cuenca and his American girlfriend Sara Grace Kelly decided to call it quits. Despite this, the actor considers Kelly as “the one” for him. “I have to say my love life is a bit down. But I’m happy. Ako naman, like with my ex, Sara, I’m really happy for her. Everything she’s accomplishing, I’m always here to support her. If she needs me, I’m there. I’ll help her out,” he said. Although Kelly remains in his heart, Cuenca thinks it’s time for him to focus on his blessings for now. “I think now, it’s time to work. Sobrang blessed ako to be doing all this work. Sobrang blessed ako na tuloytuloy ang projects na binibigay sa akin at ibaibang oportunidad ang ibinibigay sa akin. I’m just going to be thankful for what I have and put in a very good performance para matuwa ang mga
tao,” he said. Cuenca went on to say that he will do his best in portraying his role in “Because You Love Me.” The new series will be directed by Dan Villegas, the man behind films such as “English Only, Please”, “The Breakup Playlist” and “Walang Forever.” It promises to be different as it will focus on triathlons, which have been growing in popularity in the country over the past few years. “I’m supposed to be the number one triathlete of the country. I’m coming from a very rich family na may-ari ng airline, we are in everything, pero yung obsession ko talaga is being a triathlete. Aside from that, yung dynamics namin ni Yen, makikilala ko siya, igu-groom ko siya to be an endorser ng triathlon,” Cuenca shared about his role. An official synopsis and a premiere date for the series has yet to be revealed. “Because You Love Me” will also feature Bing Loyzaga, Joel Torre, Helen Gamboa and Tonton Gutierrez, among others.

Rachelle Ann Go:
Love can wait Love will have to wait for awhile before Rachelle Ann Go opens her door again. Rachelle believes that this moment is dedicated for the opportunities coming her way both here in the Philippines and London. “Kahit pinangarap ko po, wala pa po, e,” she replied when asked about her love life, in an interview on Wednesday. “Kahit gusto ko ang hirap, e. Kasi paalis-alis ako, e.” “So I don’t think it’s the right time yet. Siguro darating siguro ‘yan, hopefully, malapit na,” she added. Next week, she’ll be back to London after the three-month run of the West-End musical “Les Misérables” here in the Philippines. Although she’s sad to leave her family behind again, she won’t deny looking forward to being on her own. “I learned a lot about myself when I was there for two years,” she explained. “So ngayon, nasospoil po kasi ako ng mama ko, may nagluluto sa akin, araw-araw may nagbabaon sa akin. Doon sa London ako lang po. So ‘yong independence po siguro.” “Les Misérables” will run in London until December, so Rachelle still has no plans on what to do next after their show. However, she admits dreaming of doing a Broadway musical someday, and to star in her dream performances like “Hamilton” and “Wicked.” In November, Rachelle will be back here in the country for the “Divas in Manila” concert, where she’ll share the stage with Kyla, Yeng Constantino, Angeline Quinto and KZ. Some of her planned song line up includes those pieces from her West-End performances “Miss Saigon” and “Les Misérables,” and also pieces from her dream musicals. “Divas in Manila” will happen on November 11 at the SmartAraneta Coliseum.-Joyce Jimenez

Sam Milby reveals why he couldn’t court Pia Wurtzbach In the extended run of the hit afternoon series Doble Kara, Sam Milby’s character Seb finally ends up marrying good twin Cara. The next season of the show which begins in May has them starting a family together with a new set of challenges along the way. When it comes to his personal life, Sam admitted he does not want to share any details. The Kapamilya actor is rumored to be dating a JapaneseBritish blogger. “Yung mga experiences ko dati na sinasabi ko agad about my personal life and then sometimes it doesn’t work out, wala. Normally it doesn’t work out that way. I want to share when it’s the right time. If people want to think that I’m in a relationship or not in a relationship, that’s fine. I’ve been keeping that part of my life very personal and ayaw ko pang i-share, yun lang. Wala, ayaw ko lang i-share.
In the future naman I’ll share,” he explains. Another personality he is rumored to be dating is MJ Lastimosa which Sam denied. “Hindi po. Magkaibigan lang kami and I happen to see her ilang beses kasi she’s friends din with John Prats and Isabel so nagkikita kami dun. Pero in terms of nag-ha-hang out kami, friends lang, acquiantance so yun,” he admitted. With Pia Wurtzbach being vocal about her crush on him, Sam shared why he and the reigning Miss Universe never really dated. “Hindi po. Well parehas kaming may relasyon nung noon pa. The thing is, bilang kaibigan niya and I’ve known her for such a long time, I find it very flattering na vocal siya you know sa Fast Talk with Boy Abunda. I’m very flattered. Si Pia napakaganda, she’s a very genuine
Hindi dapat ganun eh. if I want to go for her it would be taos puso hindi dahilparang dahil lang Miss Universe siya. Because I’ve known her for a long time. Dahil may guilty conscience din ako,” he said. With so many pretty girls being linked to him, the Doble Kara star says it’s not true he doesn’t like to go for beauty queens. “Hindi naman sa ganun. It just never happened that way and then yun kay Pia, I’ve known her for such a long time. If ever it would be a good foundation kasi we have a good friendship. We still keep in touch. We’ve always had a good friendship. Merong mga times na hindi kami masyado nag-uusap but we used to be quite close naman before,” he added.Rhea Manila Santos
Echorsis wins critics, now on 2nd-week run Black comedy film Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good And Evil was given a second week run in key Metro Manila cities after it fought hard from being pulled out in cinemas. The film starring John Lapus, Kean Cipriano and Alex Medina is still screening in Market! Market!, Festival Mall, Robinsons Galleria, SM North Edsa, SM Manila and SM Megamall to date. Producer Chris Cahilig of Insight 360 hopes that more cinemas will screen the film since it’s the only Filipino movie showing this week. “Cinema attendance, including big-budgeted Hollywood flicks, was bad last week perhaps due to the record-high heat. Many still want to watch Echorsis on the big screen that’s why I am happy that at least six theaters are still exhibiting it. I just hope that others will follow,” Cahilig said. Echorsis, directed by Lemuel Lorca who recently bagged the Best Picture trophy for Ned’s Project in CineFilipino, and written by Palanca-winner Jerry Gracio, pleased critics.
horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): A rushing surge of confidence motivates you to overcome an obstacle that was blocking your way. Unfortunately, this new wave of optimism still may not produce results quickly enough for you. Nevertheless, patiently working toward your goals brings emotional satisfaction, even if you’re not making much progress today. Although you’re ready for something completely different, stay the course for a while longer to give yourself the best chance for success. Never underestimate the power of persistence.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): There are so many things happening every which way you turn that each interaction is just another distraction. Fortunately, a variety of activities can also be a lot of fun now. Nevertheless, you may be a bit scattered today as the changeable Moon visits your 3rd House of Communication. Don’t waste energy attempting to turn the noise of the day down to a manageable level. Instead, go along for the ride and enjoy yourself while the excitement lasts.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You might be feeling uncomfortable now, and even a bit out of sorts. Although you are often determined to make the best of any situation, you lose interest in the dreams of your future if your fantasies aren’t supported by the present circumstances. Explore every possibility, but don’t confuse your thoughts with reality. Everything will take longer to manifest than you think, so don’t worry about making final decisions yet. Believe it or not, time really is on your side.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You possess the necessary courage now to face issues that you have previously avoided. Fortunately, you can use today’s optimistic Sagittarius Moon to improve your personal finances as she visits your 2nd House of Money. However, too much confidence can lead to a false sense of wellbeing, making a demanding problem seem less troublesome. Don’t just ignore bad news by glossing over the details. Instead, fire up a bit of your famous Scorpio tenacity and confront your fears while the cosmos is working on your behalf.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your point of view on a personal issue might be very different from someone close to you. Oddly enough, you’re both likely working with the same set of information today. Don’t get discouraged about this current disagreement; an honest discussion may still prove fruitful if you’re willing to compromise. Thankfully, your flexible attitude can make you a winner. Your chances of getting what you want increase as long as you don’t wave the white flag too soon.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your shifting moods may get the best of you now that the evocative Moon is back in your sign, amplifying your feelings. However, you can also learn a very important lesson today if you are willing to stop running around and simply delve into your heart. You feel more at home philosophizing about your emotions; nevertheless, it’s time to explore your passions without being overwhelmed by them. Sometimes you need to step off the logical grid to squeeze the most juice out of life.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): You are harboring big ideas about what you plan to accomplish today, but it’s crucial to be realistic or you’ll end up disappointed in yourself. Unfortunately, your attention could be hijacked if you’re caught up in a web of emotions. Thankfully, your life is not as extreme as it seems. Opening your heart and widening your perspective eases the relationship tension. Taking little steps with someone you love can create enough positive movement to give you the hope you need.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You are often the most reliable person around because you tend to keep your feet on the ground while calculating how to reach the mountain’s summit. However, you may be looking for an escape route today as the intensity of your fantasies increases. There’s no need to panic now, for you won’t lose your sense of reality. Give yourself permission to sink into your most irrational dreams; you just might return with priceless wisdom that you can’t learn by reading a book.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Although this may seem like a perfect day to fall in love, an emotional interaction can become problematic unless your motives are clear. You are appreciative if a helpful person rides to your rescue or if a spiritual teaching offers you solace. Either way, your fantasies can transform into reality, but you must take the initiative by giving your dreams a creative nudge forward. Be daring and step out on a limb. If you don’t make your move quickly, you’ll never know what you might have missed.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Your positive attitude enables you to maintain a healthy perspective now as you gracefully manage most problems that surface. Optimism may abound, but it only takes you so far today. Although people seem to be supportive of your plans, you must put in the extra effort on your own. Nevertheless, do whatever you can to return the love, since you’ll make more progress when you feel the team spirit. There’s no time like the present; your current actions set the stage for the days ahead.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s natural for you Virgos to focus on the details of your current circumstances before creating a concrete plan. However, today’s confident Sagittarius Moon encourages you to see everything in a holistic manner without having to resort to extreme measures. But you might work yourself into a state of anxiety as your mind jumps back and forth from the very big to the very little. If you are pulled off course, take a deep breath and recalibrate your center for the week ahead.
PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar 20): An acquaintance may approach you for advice or assistance today. Unfortunately, your plan might not go as you imagine, even when you are operating with the best of intentions. Listen carefully to what others want and don’t promise more than you can deliver just to avoid conflict. The sooner you are honest about your limits, the better for everyone involved. Don’t get hung up trying to resolve every difference; focus on your destination and you might be surprised by how quickly you arrive there.
Clickthecity in-house film critic Philbert Dy described Echorsis as a “subversive little gem” and hailed it for its bold depiction of the LGBT community. He believed that Echorsis is the “spiritual successor” of the sleeper hit Zombadings. “(Echorsis) emerges as a subversive little gem; brave enough to say things that aren’t often touched by our cinema, and it does it while being pretty funny. That’s certainly worth something,” Dy wrote. Meanwhile, writer Oggs Crus praised the movie for doing what it sets out to do — which is to entertain while “deliberate forwarding a pervasive agenda.” Various online and print reviews and netizens praised Lapus, Cipriano and Medina for their performances as the closeted Kristoff, the confused priest Father Nick and the sweet-tongue gigolo Carlo. Echorsis was also noticed for its unpredictable and sensitive screenplay by Gracio and breathtaking cinematography by Sasha Palomares. “I hope that more people, particularly the lovers of Philippine cinema, to come out and watch Echorsis despite the summer heat. It’s truly worth their time, effort and money,” Cipriano appealed. Completing the ensemble cast are Alessandra de Rossi, Chokoleit, Kiray Celis, Mich Liggayu, Ruby Ruiz, Negi Negra, Bekimon, Nico Antonio, Francine Garcia, Odette Khan, and 1:43’s Yuki Sakamoto, Anjo Resurreccion, Gold Aquino and Yheen Valero.
