ANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday declared that he would answer only to the Filipino people and not to foreigners who would raise a howl over the country’s human rights record and the supposed extrajudicial killings attending his drug war. Aside from the issue of human rights, Duterte also told reporters in a press conference after the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations Summit that China had agreed to bind itself to a Code of Conduct still being negotiated by senior ministers of the parties to the dispute. The president also reported that the leaders of Southeast Asian nations and other global players had expressed concern over the looming threat of terrorism in the region. Duterte said that he treated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s expression of his country’s concern over the human rights situation in the Philippines as a “personal and official insult” because foreigners were unaware of the situation on the ground. insulted, 2

INSULTED from front page
“[I]t is a personal and official insult. That is why you hear me chewing down curses, epithets, nagmumura (cursing), bullshit and everything because it angers me when you are a foreigner you do not know what is happening in this country,” he said in the wide-ranging media briefing. The Philippine leader stressed that he would answer only to the Filipino people over the supposed extralegal killings marring his anti-drugs campaign. “I was elected by the people of the Republic of the Philippines. I only answer to the people of the Republic of the Philippines,” he said, adding that he would explain to a farmer or a fisherman but not to a foreigner. He called on his foreign critics to investigate first what was happening in the country and don’t just rely on records and figures from the political
opposition and communists whom he accused of producing “falsified” information. “You don’t even investigate. You only show before the United Nations a record of how many persons died you claim to be extra-judicially. I said you can investigate. Look, guys, what I am really asking, ‘Why don’t you investigate first and find out the truth. Whatever happened why are you not giving us in government the simple rule of the right of the heard,’” the tough-talking Duterte said. The president conceded that there may be illegal killings in his drug war, but he insisted that he ordered the suspension and apprehension of the cops involved just like in the killings of teenagers in Caloocan City. The president also bared the jitters that regional leaders felt during the summit following a deadly and costly siege of Marawi City by Islamic State group-inspired militants. Philstar
Russia ready to ‘expand ties’ with PH, Medvedev tells Duterte
MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met at the Coconut Palace on Monday evening and presided over the signing of several agreements between the two countries. Philippine and Russian representatives inked agreements on mutual assistance on criminal matters and extradition as well as cooperation in the fields of energy, communication, transport education, education, intellectual property and audit. Duterte thanked Medvedev for Russia’s assistance in the conflict in Marawi, particularly for the rifles and arms given by Russia. “We were able to use the rifles and arms you gave us in kind and because it was a sniper model that hit one of those commanders, a certain Malaysian Mohamad, I forgot his entire name,” he said. Duterte was referring to Malaysian terrorist Mahmud Ahmad who was killed by the AFP in Marawi on October 18, 2017. The President also disclosed to Medvedev that there are two Russians currently detained in the Philippines facing smuggling charges. He promised that they will be treated fairly and
will be detained in comfortable quarters. “Whether true or not, we will find out but I will see to it that they are treated fairly, no additional stress on their person that will happen,” he promised the Russian prime minister. Duterte said he intends to put up a trade house in Moscow where the Philippines can showcase Filipino products. For his part, Medvedev expressed Moscow’s readyness to “expand ties” with the Philippines in various areas, including politics, trade and economic cooperation, culture, counter- terrorism and technical cooperation. “Definitely I believe that we have opened with this a new chapter in our relationship,” Medvedev said. “And no doubt we will keep standing by your side, we’ll keep assisting you in this very important and sensitive theme and along this track of fight against terrorism in the course like bringing or restoring law and order.” A business-to-business agreement between Filipino company Global Ferronickels Holdings, Inc. and Russian company V Holding LLC was also signed in the presence of Duterte and Medvedev.Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News

Colombian man who swallowed P8.89 million in cocaine ‘pellets’ nabbed at NAIA MANILA - A Colombian man was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport upon arrival Sunday for concealing drugs in his body, authorities said Tuesday. Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Aaron Aquino identified the suspect as Alberto Pedraza Quijano, 67, who arrived in the country via Emirates Airlines Flight EK332 from Dubai. He was arrested 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 12. The United States Embassy in Manila said in a statement Tuesday that the arrest was made after US Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Manila “shared information on a high-risk traveler aboard an incoming international flight with the Philippine Bureau of Customs and the PDEA.” Upon arrest, the suspect admitted in an interview with customs officials that he swallowed several pellets of roughly 1 kilo of cocaine worth around P8.89 million. X-ray results showed circular items within the man’s body, which turned out to be 79 condom-wrapped pellets, the embassy said. Quijano will be facing charges for violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.ABS-CBN News

Philippines, New Zealand sign education agreement The Philippines and New Zealand signed late Tuesday a memorandum of cooperation aimed at improving the education system in the Southeast Asian nation. The Commission on Higher Education and New Zealand’s Qualifications Authority forged the agreement during bilateral talks between President Rodrigo Duterte and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Adern was in Manila along with other dialogue partners of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations for the regional bloc’s annual summit. The memorandum tackles the comparative analysis of the two countries’ bachelor’s degrees, which, according to Duterte, means the Philippines “can have access to the quality of education in New Zealand.” Duterte described the deal as “a good development.” CHED chairwoman Patricia Licuanan and David Strachan, New Zealand ambassador to the Philippines, signed the agreement. — With a report from Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News

Houston armed robber hands out doughnuts to victims Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Security cameras were recording at a Texas doughnut shop when one of three armed robbers made it up to store customers by passing them some stolen pastries. The Houston Police Department’s Robbery Division posted a video to YouTube showing the armed robbery Monday at Shipley Do-Nuts. The video shows three men with their faces covered enter the store. One of the men brandishes a gun and demands money from the cash register while another collects cellphones from the waiting customers at the counter. Duterte’s crackdown on illegal drugs has seen almost 4,000 people killed in police operations alone, according to data from the Philippine National Police. There have been 2,290 “drug-related” deaths, apart from 85 police or military casualties, since Duterte assumed the presidency in July 2016 until September 2017.
Roque evaded a question on whether any other ASEAN leader or dialogue partner had explicitly expressed support for the campaign against illegal drugs, which is widely rebuked by local and international human rights advocates. Twitter to double tweet limit to 280 characters SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter announced Tuesday it would double the limit for tweets to 280 characters in a bid to draw in more users and boost engagement at the social network. “We’re expanding the character limit! We want it to be easier and faster for everyone to express themselves,” tweeted the site, which started testing an increase to its 140-character limit in most languages in early September. The changes will be rolling out in all languages except Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, in which space limitations have not been an issue, Twitter said. Twitter, which has been lagging behind rival social networks in user growth and struggling to reach profitability, faced a dilemma over the change in that it could alienate longtime users and transform the nature of the service. Product manager Aliza Rosen said in a blog post that the test showed most people still used 140 characters or fewer, suggesting the fast-moving nature of Twitter will not change. Twitter began to look at the new limit “so every person around the world could express themselves easily in a tweet,” Rosen said. “Our goal was to make this possible while ensuring we keep the speed and brevity that makes Twitter, Twitter. Looking at all the data, we’re excited to
share we’ve achieved this goal and are rolling the change out to all languages where cramming was an issue.” She noted that in the first few days of the test many people used the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, “but soon after behavior normalized.” As a result, “the brevity of Twitter remained,” she said. Some users have worried that longer tweets could profoundly change the nature of the one-to-many messaging platform, which is popular with journalists and politicians but has failed to win the mass appeal of rivals like Facebook. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said there was a positive response to the test of the longer limit. “In addition to more Tweeting, people who had 280 characters received more Likes, Retweets, @mentions, Followers, and were more satisfied with Twitter. So, you’ll be getting 280 too -- enjoy!” Stone tweeted. Last month, Twitter reported its loss for the past quarter narrowed as the company suggested it could reach profitability for the first time in the fourth quarter. The update showed Twitter’s monthly active user base rose slightly to 330 million, roughly in line with forecasts. — Agence France-Presse

Iran earthquake: Death toll soars to more than 450 Nov. 13 (UPI) -- At least 450 people have been killed and thousands are injured near the Iran-Iraq border after the region was rocked by a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake, authorities said Monday. The quake hit Azgeleh, but officials said the highest number of casualties were in Iran’s Kermanshah province. Villages and cities near the quake are suffering from widespread power outages and destruction of property. Authorities said Iran’s armed forces will be sent to help remove rubble. As of Monday, over 100 medics have been sent to devastated areas of Iran. At least 43 ambulances and 130 emergency technicians were stationed in Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport to transfer patients.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei sent a message for all citizens to “rush to the aid of those affected in these early hours after the incident.” Three days of mourning have been ordered for those in Kermanshah. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to visit there Tuesday to assess damage and oversee rescue work. On the Iraq side of the border, 11 people were killed and the most damage was seen in Darbandikhan, near the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. Shocks from Sunday’s earthquake could be felt as far away as Pakistan, Lebanon, Kuwait and Turkey. The casualties and damage were limited to only Iran and Iraq, though.

Anne & Erwan:
Not ‘well-kept secret’ and ‘minimal’ Christian wedding Until the very end, Anne Curtis “fooled” (read: “misled”) the public and the media into believing that she and Erwan Heussaff were getting married last Saturday, Nov. 11. But as early as three months ago, The STAR was tipped off by somebody close to the couple that the actual date was Nov. 12, last Sunday, accurately adding that the bride “would dazzle” in a gown specially designed by Monique Lhuillier for the Christian wedding in New Zealand. The wedding capped their seven-year romance. A few weeks ago, Anne took a leave from It’s Showtime and took a quick “mysterious” trip to the US and even if she tried desperately hard to hide it,
word leaked that she was there to fit the gown. You see, in this age of social media, nobody can hide anything, especially if celebrities like Anne are actually the ones baiting netizens by posting pictures. My media friends and I don’t understand why showbiz celebrities would deprive the fans (who made them in the first place, who put them where they are now) updates about an important event such as a wedding. I remember what FPJ said when his niece Sheryl Cruz got married to John Norman Bustos (a sheriff in San Francisco, California; they were divorced) — you know, “Be open to the public,” after all celebrities owe it all to the public.
An explanation to today’s headline: even if Anne was stingy in sharing her and Erwan’s joy with the fans, the wedding was a not-so-well-kept secret; and “minimal” because unlike other celebrity “destination weddings” (like that of Dr. Vicki Belo and Dr. Hayden Kho in Paris last September), Anne and Erwan had only four principal sponsors, namely Swatch Lady Virgie Ramos, Veronique del Rosario-Corpuz (of the Viva Artists Agency, daughter of Boss Vic del Rosario), Anne’s manager Elizabeth “Betchay” Vidanes and Kim Atienza (It’s Showtime co-host “on indefinite leave”). Among the invited guests (all-expenses-paid?) were Anne’s other It’s Showtime co-hosts Vice Ganda, Vhong Navarro, Teddy Corpuz, Ryan Bang, Karylle (with husband Yael Yuzon) and Jugs Jugueta; and friends Luis Manzano with girlfriend Jessy Mendiola, and Luis’ ex-girlfriend Angel Locsin with current flame Neil Arce. (People are curious how the “exes” reacted when they crossed paths…unless they avoided or simply ignored each other.) Anne and Erwan requested for a minute of prayer for It’s Showtime Hashtag member Franco Hernandez (who belonged to the second batch) who died on Saturday, Nov. 11, in a boat accident in Davao. To sum it up, Kim added, “Everyone was crying during the ceremony. Erwan was extra emotional.” No word yet where the honeymoon will be. Secret…as usual! (But stay tuned to social media for updates.)-FUNFARE By Ricky Lo

Maria Isabel Lopez apologizes after using the ASEAN lane Maria Isabel Lopez recently made headlines after sharing on Facebook that she opened the lane intended for the ASEAN delegates. This didn’t sit well with the MMDA. She then apologized and said she’s only human. “The end doesn’t justify the means but I needed to answer the call of nature because I had been stuck in traffic for three hours. Sorry, but I’m only human,” she told Philippine Daily Inquirer. The beauty queen also explained that she asked permission to an MMDA officer.
“He said no because I didn’t have a pass. But I argued that other vehicles—taxi cabs, buses and motorcycles—had already entered the lane.” She added: “[Then] the MMDA officer left in the middle of our conversation because of the taxis and buses behind me. This prompted me to remove the cones.” “By the time I did it, the MMDA had allowed other vehicles to pass through the Asean lane,” she said, adding that she was speaking out “to make the story complete.”-BY PUSH TEAM

I would be able to get a cool full-time job and a fantastic experience. Both of my parents were so proud when I told them I was accepted into the Canadian Forces. Even if I initially thought I would be in the army running on fields or jumping out of helicopters, it did not turn out that way. After some tests, they determined or should I say recommended that I try Air Traffic Control. I enjoyed my experience with the forces and I have no regrets. As a veteran of just over three years, I am amazed at how much I still benefit from my service. I have no problem in encouraging others to consider joining the Canadian Forces whether it is the regular force (full time) or the reserves (part time). Under the Trudeau Gov-

or some this is the time of the year when they start getting ready for Christmas. Some of my neighbours have already put up their Christmas lights! After Halloween, the stores will be packed with Christmas decors and shelves will be filled with Christmas gift ideas. Those boxes packed away months ago are brought out and all of that lovely Christmas stuff is put out. The houses are decorated with lights and trimmings and yards become the showcases of Christmas display. What do you do to prepare for Christmas?
Youth who participate in cadet programs will benefit from the discipline, team work, emergency response, and other skill sets.
HE purpose of this story is twofold: first to remember and respect those that lost their lives in wars and second, to challenge members of the community to consider serving Canada by being a member of the Canadian Forces. On November 11, like millions of other people, I reflected on and remembered those brave men and women who gave their lives fighting for our freedom. Getting a better understanding of the horrors of war can be seen through the actual pictures and films that were taken from the front lines of World War II. There are many documentaries about war and Hollywood has re-created war scenes that are so realistic that one can better appreciate the many emotions of war. One of my favourites was “Saving Private Ryan”. Back in 1981, I made the decision to sign up and serve in the Canadian forces. I can still remember the commercials back then, in particular the slogan “there is no life like it”. The commercials made it look adventurous and fulfilling. I was working part-time at a gas station at the time and believed that by signing up,

Asean cooperation
he Association of Southeast Asian Nations is reportedly set to issue a statement of concern over militarization in the South China Sea. The statement, in case it is issued, is unlikely to change the status quo in the disputed waters or stop any military buildup that is certain to affect freedom of navigation and overflight in the area. For many years now, ASEAN has been trying to hammer out a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea with Beijing, which claims nearly all of the sea. The initiative is moving at glacial pace. Divided, ASEAN has failed to stop China from creating artificial islands with military facilities in disputed waters. The Philippines, winner of an international arbitration case that invalidated China’s entire claim over the South China Sea, might yet turn out to be the loser for lack of interest in asserting its sovereign rights. Little progress is expected in this area at the ongoing ASEAN summit. The 10-member grouping has better chances of moving together in the same direction in other areas. These include addressing climate change and cooperating to stop the spread of terrorism, the drug menace, human trafficking, piracy and other transnational crimes.
Living Hope “Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.” The word “blessed” literally means happy. From this statement of Jesus we see that the pure in heart are the happy in heart. Why? Simply because they will one day see God. Now this sounds really simple, doesn’t it, because all that you need is a pure heart. I don’t know about you but there are a lot of days when my heart seems more polluted

Southeast Asia is home to the opium-producing region known as the Golden Triangle, one of the two largest in the world. Weak law enforcement and corruption have also allowed producers and traffickers of other narcotics as well as synthetic drugs such as shabu to thrive. Closer ASEAN cooperation is needed to win this war. Terrorism influenced by the Islamic State is another threat that could engulf the region. The IS-inspired Mautes and Abu Sayyaf terrorists were neutralized and flushed out of Marawi, but only after five months and the loss of over a thousand lives. IS fighters, killed or booted out of their former strongholds in Iraq and Syria, reportedly continue to aspire to set up a new base in Southeast Asia. Concerted ASEAN action can best thwart such plans. ASEAN can look back to the past 50 years as a generally peaceful period that allowed its members to develop and prosper and become one of the world’s most dynamic regions. Southeast Asia now faces new threats, which are best addressed if the grouping can act as one in implementing decisive and timely responses. Philstar

t is heartwarming to see the soldiers and policemen who fought for our country in Marawi City given the heroes’ welcome they deserved. Rightly so, these soldiers and policemen returned to their respective camps with honor parades in the presence of their families and loved ones. After surviving the Marawi battles, all troopers were honored with homecoming parades by the respective major service commands of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as well as by the Philippine National Police (PNP), and even by the Philippine Coast Guard. The PNP Special Action Force held theirs inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City. This is in contrast to the usual negativity the protectors of our nation, specially our policemen who are all still smarting from the controversial “Oplan Tokhang” all out war against illegal drugs of President Rodrigo Duterte. While indeed there are the proverbial rotten eggs in any basket, we should not also lose focus on the much greater service and sacrifice of the majority of our men in uniform. One thing good that came out of the battle against the Islamic State (IS)-influenced local terrorists groups in Marawi City is a little improvement in the image of the PNP. The PNP slowly regaining its stature as an institution of men, like the AFP, who know how to die in defense of our people and nation. Our cops really needed a morale booster. N THE Philippines, the Christmas season is supposed to start in September, the first of the so-called “ber” months. That’s when we start hearing Christmas songs being played on radio and items for Christmas decorations start surfacing in malls and department stores. The practice had some people abroad considering our Christmas season as the longest in the world. The problem with that notion is Nov. 1 and 2. For us in the family, it is awkward to focus on a joyous celebration starting in September when two months later would be All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, a solemn activity. Besides, our family are traditionalists when it comes to remembering the, and paying homage to, the dead. So we only start decorating for Christmas after All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

Malacanang started getting much friendlier White House calls that came through twice already from President Trump. to fight not only against criminality but also help the military win the war against insurgency and terrorism. This we saw again when our government forces fought together against the Maute and Abu Sayaff terrorists for almost five months to end the IS-inspired siege in Marawi City. As our military and police fight terrorism, insurgency and criminality, they need a lot of support – not just words of encouragement to moraleboosting parades but most especially the firepower they need to perform their role to keep peace and order. As ordered last month by their Commander-in-chief, the PNP has stopped its “Oplan Tokhang” and relinquished its drive against illegal drugs to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). With this, the PNP can help more the military to fight terrorism – a far greater national security threat we should guard against. This will really help our police be at a better position to fight criminality, insurgency and terrorism – which all have become threats not just in remote areas but even in urban centers. The PNP recently tried to purchase 36,000 additional USmade 9mm service pistols and 25,000 M4 rifles, in addition to those already delivered to them during the past administra-
tion. But this time, it’s Export Permit being applied with the US Department of State is reportedly stalled. To help our police perform their jobs better, President Duterte could sway his newfound friend US President Donald Trump to help get this going. The PNP service pistol requirement is on top of the US commitment of $32-million in training and services” that Malacanang announced after former US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Manila in July last year. Former presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella disclosed this aid to the PNP aims “to intensify the police’s law enforcement efforts.” President Duterte earlier ranted about how the US Congress had derailed the Philippines’ procurement of US-made arms after American democrat congressmen bitterly scored his administration’s bloody antidrug war, marred by alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) and human rights abuses. At that time, there was no Marawi siege yet. President Duterte’s tirades against then US President Barack Obama over the human rights issues in the Philippines was not helping any to push the gun purchase. Out of spite perhaps, President Duterte ordered the PNP to cancel the firearms purchase. “Because at that time we were short of arms for the police

COMMONSENSE and we wanted to buy (these) from America but because of the almost equal power of the US Congress and the President, (the procurement) was stymied by the legislators,” President Duterte pointed out. The need for heavy firearms came to the fore at the height of the Marawi siege when soldiers and policemen were being mowed down by IS-supported Mautes and Abu Sayyaf terrorists sniping at them with their high-powered and long-ranged rifles. Thus, President Duterte turned to China and Russia for firearms. The Commander-inchief conceded the AFP and the PNP are partial to US rifles and firearms, being our country’s chief defense ally through these long years since World War II. Last month, President Duterte witnessed the turnover of military equipment from Russia, which includes 20 units of multi-purpose vehicles, 5,000 units of AK-74M Kalashnikov assault rifles, one million units of ammunition and 5,000 steel helmets.
Much earlier, China donated 3,000 assault rifles to the AFP. The first batch of assault weapons are currently being used by the PNP’s elite SAF troopers who also fought alongside the military in Marawi City. It is now a different story after Mr. Obama stepped down from office in January this year. Malacanang started getting much friendlier White House calls that came through twice already from President Trump. President Trump arrived last night in Manila from Vietnam where he and President Duterte attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ summit. While in Vietnam, the two leaders who were phone pals before had a brief “Hi” and “Hello” chat at the sidelines of the APEC Leaders’ meeting. Mr. Trump reportedly told President Duterte: “See you in Manila.” President Trump flew in on board his Air Force-One plane. Mr.Trump is attending today’s 5th ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations)-US Summit which also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the ASEAN-US Dialogue Relations. The White House earlier announced Mr.Trump decided to extend his stay in Manila a day longer in order to attend also the East Asia Summit (EAS) taking place tomorrow. Quietly perhaps, the visit here of President Trump is keeping hopes alive for our men in uniform to support the weapons of their choice to come from the US. Philstar

Candid Thoughts The Christmas season is strategically positioned in December obviously to cap our year with a joyous feeling. That’s something I want to savor this year considering how 2017 has played out for my family and me. These are trying times for me both professionally and personally. I would leave out heart and all that you need to do is ask Him. King David asked God for this exact thing: “Create in me a pure heart and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) God granted David’s request and gave him a clean heart. He can do the same for you; all you need to do is ask Him. An essential part of preparing for Christmas involves re-arranging of our priorities. Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) Just as we arranged our

But I have something to say about the challenges the family had to go through this year. Two medical issues hit us. My wife had to undergo surgery to take out a stone-filled gall bladder. The technology for the procedure is advanced, ensuring that the scar left behind wouldn’t be long and looking ugly. But it is relatively expensive, especially for a patient whose medical insurance could only pay for consultations and lab tests. Which reminds me of the advice of a former SunStar colleague when we were deciding on the amount that we would allow the company to deduct from our salaries for our medical
insurance. At that time, some employees complained that the insurance is often unused. “Di gyud ta magtihik-tihik,” she said, “because who knows when we encounter health problems and need a big amount for a cure?” My turn came two months later when a fly-borne infection downed me with fever and caused my lower right leg to swell. I spent six days in the hospital for that, which caused another dent on our finances. As if those medical episodes weren’t enough, weeks later our bank changing our ATM cards resulted in the loss of my savings that I am still trying to recover. After All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, I heard my

Here’s what Sandara Park
has to say about being ‘jobless’
“What do you know about me?” This is what Korean pop star Sandara Park has to say about people calling her “jobless.” In an episode of “Dara TV” posted on YouTube, the 33-year-old addressed the issue. “I really want to talk about this, that the
job I do, people are not aware of the story behind and they sayin’ ‘Is she jobless hanging around all the time, traveling again?’ but [that’s] not true,” she said in Korean. She added that she has a lot of events in other countries, but these events don’t get reported in Korea, so some of her friends also question why she seems to be always traveling. “And even if I come to overseas for shootings...or attending the events...they’re not much appeared in Korea so even my friends [are] saying ‘You go to travel again, I saw [it] on Instagram. I’m so jealous of you having so much fun,” Park said. According to Park, she didn’t
have time to rest when she was still promoting as part of girl group 2NE1. At that time, all the other members only tend to follow their leader, CL, who attends business meetings for the group. “Back in time, I just worked because I thought that’s all I can do. Chaerin (CL) had meetings herself as a leader, and when everything’s set up, the rest of us just followed that,” she said. “I need to know how’s my business going, you know... I cannot just lean on others forever,” Park added, saying her trips abroad are part of her self-promotion. -ABS-CBN News

What’s the real score between Iñigo Pascual and Maris Racal? When it comes to his romantic life and his career, Iñigo Pascual relayed that his father Piolo Pascual lets him make his own decisions. “He just really gives me advice na ‘don’t do this na parang you don’t lead a girl on if you’re not really trying to pursue her,’ so mga ganong advice. When it comes to choosing what I want to do even with my career path, di ba si papa dati alam niyo naman dati na ayaw niya ako mag-artista pero he still let me so that’s something that I really appreciate about him is how he supports me with whatever decision I make,” he said. The young singer is currently be-
ing linked to Maris Racal. Asked what is Piolo’s reaction to it, he remarked, “With Maris if you want to talk about that masaya ako dahil even with Kelley (Day) before, my parents have always been, ‘We want you to be human, we want you to be who you are as a person.’ dahil I mean being an artist is already hard just that maraming limitations din na kailangan mong isipin siyempre you are a public figure so simple things like that. My parents let me be already so masaya ako don.” With his apparent closeness to Maris, Iñigo was also asked about the real score between them. “We are exclusively talk-
ing to each other. I mean I’m not talking to anybody else and I asked her she’s not talking to anybody else. We’re not an official thing but we definitely find each other very special to each other and very dear to each other and I find her very fun to talk to and I’m happy that I have her as a friend in my life,” he stated. Iñigo remarked that he is truly inspired by Maris’s dedication to her craft. “Sobrang na-inspire ako sa passion niya, sa hunger niya na gawin ‘yung gusto niya na ngayon.Sobrang excited ako sa kanya dahil I’m claiming 2018 to be one of her biggest years kasi she’s starting to her own songs. We’ve co-written some songs together and I’m telling you that girl is something else. The songs she write it’s the new sound,” he said.-BY KRISTHOFF CAGAPE-

Marian Rivera
invited by Cambodian president to ASEAN MANILA, Philippines — Kapuso star Marian Rivera has been invited by Cambodian President Hun Sen to meet him on Saturday, November 11, during the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) Summit. Rivera will be accompanied by her husband, Dingdong Dantes, in meeting the president. “Nagulat nga ako na pinadalhan ako ng invitation kasi ‘di naman ako sanay na umaattend ng mga ganyan. Parang nakakahiya naman na pumunta ako sa ganun. Pero ang sabi sa amin, gusto daw ako makita ng president ng Cambodia kaya pupunta kami,” Marian told reporters during her launch on Thursday as new endorser of SM’s arts and culture department store, Kultura. According to her, Sen probably knows her because her soap operas “Dyesabel” and “Marimar” were shown in Cambodia, and now, her other soap, “Carmela,” is being aired in the country. “Sobrang nakakataba ng puso. Parang sabi ko nga kay Dong, nahihiya ako pumunta kasi hindi naman ako sanay sa mga ganung k l a s e n g event. Pero sabi ko nga, ‘Bakit naman ‘di ko pagbibigyan na makita nila ako?’,” M a r ian ex-
plained. She said she plans to wear something from Kultura when she meets the Cambodian president. She also would like to give him a Filipino souvenir from the store. She said she is proud to be the brand’s endorser as proceeds from such endorsement will go to the non-profit organization she supports, Smile Train, an international children’s charity providing free cleft lip and palate surgeries to indigent kids all over the world. She is also proud to be the face of a brand that supports local craftsmanship. According to the brand, as a celebrity, hands-on mom and entrepreneur, Marian represents the modern Filipina with a global outlook; one whose eclectic tastes have made her appreciate all things Filipino. Like many young women today, she is rediscovering her heritage and appreciating the artistry of handcrafted accessories and beautifully embroidered apparel. With that, she is confident enough to mix pieces from international designers with touches of Filipiniana in her everyday style, resulting in a look that is not “costumey,” but effortlessly chic and contemporary. “The idea to get Marian Rivera as a brand ambassador started with a post of her in our silk barong dress for the inauguration of Vice President Leni Robredo,” the brand said in a statement. “This post was met with a remarkable response, which included numerous inquiries to this day, about the dress she was wearing and its availability in our stores.” Marian’s elegant taste in style and fashion has shown her love for locally made products particularly because these are “gawang Pinoy” and benefit Filipino exporters, manufacturers, communities and the economy in general. The actress said she loves everything Filipinomade because “maganda na nga, ang ganda pa ng kalidad.” “Nakaka-proud maging Pinoy talaga!” she declared.Philstar

ingly positive and I would like to applaud the youth and their parents for being involved. Being involved in the cadet program does not mean you will end up joining the Canadian Forces. I will be surprised if 50% eventually become members but the benefits of being a cadet are too many to ignore. Ask any parent who was at the McGregor Armouries what their feeling was, watching their daughter or son on parade. I would guess that they were all feeling proud. Youth who participate in cadet programs will benefit from the discipline, team work, emergency response, and other skill sets. The benefits go beyond just learning and having good role models – they will
make good friends, have something positive to put on their resumes, and the experience could lead to a career opportunity. Every year, I take the time to remember and for the last seven years, I have been attending the Remembrance ceremony at McGregor Ave in Winnipeg’s North End. One of the more encouraging things I have witnessed is the increased number of youth cadets. I believe that this is owed in good part to the growing interest of the Filipino community. If you have any questions about the Canadian Forces or our many cadet programs, come and talk to me on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McDonalds on Keewatin. I love talking about this subject.

Third + Bird:
Winnipeg’s largest urban market THE term “urban market” is a fast-growing concept that is being applied more and more frequently in highly populated cities and towns. An urban market is a locally-based market that showcases various vendors offering unique and creative forms of things like paper goods, jewelry, home décor, food, drink and much more. Winnipeg based Third + Bird business founders Chandra Kremski and Charla Smeall bring an overall sense of more to the Winnipeg urban market scene than any other market founders. More commitment to their vendors and mission to sell local, more respect and loyalty for the individuals that make their markets so special, more pride in the amazing work and results they’ve managed to produce during their business’s young lifespan. Third + Bird began as an idea Chandra had to showcase local artisans skills and products with the intention to fundraise money for global and local initiatives, including Winnipeg art programs and Nepali Women’s Co-op. Charla responded to the vision enthusiastically and determinedly, joining Chandra in providing support for those who needed it. It was a hobby of the utmost passion and drive for both women. “And it’s been magic ever since,” Chandra says with a laugh. For five years they gave every penny of the money raised back to communities. In 2013 they boasted an incredible and thriving market scene and with their original idea of celebrating local businesses and artisans still in mind, they transformed their successful hobby into a successful business. “It was a really natural step,” Chandra says, “Every step along the way has been so natural and so progressive and it’s been a really great journey.” Since its business establishment in 2013, Third + Bird has come a long way, including partnerships with The Bay Downtown and The Forks and the addition of a Spring Market on top of their very popular Christmas market. Their Spring Market alone generated over $500,000 in revenue for their vendors and brought out more than 6000 shoppers, a huge milestone that Chandra and Charla are optimistically confident they will surpass in the upcoming Christmas Market that takes place November 25th and 26th. Chandra comments on their Spring Market milestone, making their appreciation for their shoppers infinitely clear, “That’s revenue that stays in Manitoba. People are supporting individuals that are truly labouring over every detail and ethically sourcing their product, something that makes us so proud and so appreciative for shoppers that value and help grow our community.” The application process for becoming a vendor for the Third + Bird markets is
quite extensive and thorough. The application itself is available online for ten days typically three months before the Christmas Market and Spring Market, with a jury reviewing and selecting if and which vendors will be present at the market events. The waiting list for being a vendor is also quite extensive so many will have to be patient and trust the process. The background check on confirming that the artisan or business is 100% local and homegrown is the most pivotal part of the selection, “This way shoppers don’t have to question the authenticity of what we’re advertising as a 100% locally based urban market,” explains Charla. Chandra and Charla advertise tirelessly for their vendors, making sure that they are a recognized feature even before the market or event takes place. They will receive their own Instagram post on the Third + Bird account and an entire vendor page on the Third + Bird website. This is a unique commitment and show of loyalty to Third + Bird as it is not a typical action of other urban markets to advertise so in depth for their vendors. They’re also careful not to oversaturate the type of business or sales goods their vendors present with, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity of generating business and personal revenue as well as advertisement for their product. They encourage strongly for their vendors to make their individual area in the market as imaginative and appealing as what they’re selling, pushing for creativity and originality in their sales space. Third + Bird’s goal for giving local businesses and artisans a larger platform is unparalleled to any other business of its kind, with the business’s goal repeatedly and beyond successfully achieved each year. With the 10-year anniversary of Chandra and Charla’s vision approaching next year, they are both in agreement when Chandra says, “There are some really awesome things coming in 2018.” For the remainder of 2017 however, you can join in and help support their vision by enjoying their upcoming annual Christmas Market that takes place November 25th and 26th at the Hudson’s Bay Downtown. Tickets are at $5 general admission at the Vaughn Street entrance with market hours on the 25th of 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. and the 26th 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. There will also be a Christmas Popup at the Forks Market during December 2nd and 3rd and the following two weekends afterward. For further details about the markets, vendors and more on Third + Bird you can visit their website at thirdandbirdevents.com “We are curated, modern, fresh and contemporary. We are truly Winnipeg’s largest Urban Market.” -Chandra Kremski.

(Part 2)
The first four exercises was discussed on the previous article. These exercises were squats, jump squats, lateral bound and step-ups. The exercises focuses both on quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes. The last four exercises however will be mainly targeting the hamstring muscles and glutemedius. During the ACL rehab, the hamstring muscles are one of the main focus for strengthening and one of the most important aside
from quadriceps. The hamstring muscles assists in stopping the lower leg from sliding anteriorly (forward) in relation to the upper leg. ACL stabilizes the knee joint and where the hamstring is positioned, it helps in keeping the knee joint stabilized. That is why it is important to work on hamstring strength to help prevent ACL injury. Here are the exercises: 5. Reverse lunges: focuses on
hamstrings, glutes and quadriceps. Step back as far as you can , then lower your body keeping a 90 degrees flexion on the knee and hip. Keep a good posture throughout the exercise. Lunging deeper targets the hamstrings and the glutes minimizing the forward motion of the knee/ the body. Repeat the exercise 3 sets of 10 repetitions. 6. Single leg deadlift: targets
hamstring and glutes. Using a dumbbell or a kettlebell holding it with both hands, stand on one leg. Lower your upper body hinging from the hips and one leg straight back until you’re a table top. Keep the knee slightly bent on the one that are standing on. This exercise also challenges your balance. Return back to standing position then repeat the motion. Repeat the exercise 3 sets of 10
repetitions. 7. Hamstring curls with an exercise ball: Lying on your back on a mat, position the ball under your claves or ankle. Lift your torso up like a bridge and when you feel balanced, bring your heels towards your glutes. Keeping the bridge position, straighten your knees back to the beginning, then curl them again. Repeat this exercises 3 sets of 10.

De La Hoya: I can take out McGregor in 2 rounds BOXING Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya remains confident that he still can handle himself in the ring. De La Hoya, who is nearly a decade into retirement, said on Monday that he has been “secretly training” and called out UFC star Conor McGregor. “You know I’m competitive,” the 44year-old De La Hoya said on “Golden Boy Radio with Tattoo and the Crew,” a daily digital radio show. “I still have it in me. ... I’m faster than ever and stronger than ever. I know I can take out Conor McGregor in two rounds. I’ll come back for that fight. Two rounds. Just one more (fight). I’m calling him out. Two rounds, that’s all I need. That’s
all I’m going to say.” De La Hoya publicly considered a comeback in June 2015, only to change his tune one week later. A 1992 Olympic gold medal winner and 10-time professional world champion, De La Hoya captured titles at 130, 135, 140, 147, 154 and 160 pounds. He won bouts against Hall of Famers Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. (twice), Pernell Whitaker and Arturo Gatti. He also fought other greats, including Felix Trinidad, Hector Camacho Sr., Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley (twice) and Manny Pacquiao. De La Hoya has not fought since
dropping a one-sided eighth-round knockout loss to Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6, 2008. He went 39-6 with 30 knockouts in his career and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014. De La Hoya also has battled drug and alcohol addiction and has been to rehabilitation multiple times, but he said in Monday’s interview that he is doing well now. McGregor, 29, lost a 10th-round knockout to Floyd Mayweather on Aug.
Masked-man Irving leads Celtics to 13th win in a row NEW YORK -- Masked man Kyrie Irving scored 25 points to lead the Boston Celtics to their 13th consecutive NBA victory on Tuesday with a 109-102 triumph at Brooklyn. The Celtics, whose 13-2 record is the NBA’s best, are on their longest win streak since winning 14 in a row in November and December of 2010, with the team record of 19 consecutive wins coming in November and December of 2008. Irving suffered a facial fracture Friday in Boston’s 90-87 victory over Charlotte when Australian teammate Aron Baynes elbowed him accidentally. That forced the 25-year-old guard to miss Sunday’s 95-94 victory over Toronto. A plastic protective mask allowed Irving onto the court against the Nets and he responded by hitting 8-

Folayang after shock defeat: ‘I tip my hat off to Nguyen, the journey doesn’t end here’ Former ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang of Baguio City’s Team Lakay finally spoke out regarding his shock defeat at the hands of Martin Nguyen this past Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay. Folayang, 33, was deemed the favorite in his fight against ONE featherweight champion Nguyen, who went up a weight class to challenge Folayang for the title. The Filipino warrior fought well in the first round, but it only took one right hand from Nguyen to end the night for him in the second round. “First and foremost, I thank God for his protection. At this point, I assure my followers and the fans of Team Lakay that I am alright and there is nothing to be anxious about. I am still in good physical
condition,” said Folayang in a statement. Folayang had to receive medical attention right after the fight given the dangerous nature of his loss, making him skip the post-fight press conference. Three days after ONE Championship’s first champion versus champion card, Folayang released a statement and has nothing but praises for his friend and conqueror, Nguyen. — LA, GMA News

“This year, I am very honored to be joined by The Royal Canadian Navy of HMCS Chippawa for my annual concert for a cause 2017 entitled We Remember. We dedicate the show to all the veterans and military people who have served and are currently serving. In this regard, we have chosen the Winnipeg Military Family Resource Centre as our beneficiary. It is a great pleasure to be joined by talented children and individuals, along with talented youth, from General Wolfe School. Aside from choosing a good cause each year, it is my firm belief that we should empower the youth to pursue their gifts through providing them the opportunity to showcase and share their talents. IT was indeed one wild night of dancing, laughter and singing when Todd Labelle Promotions brought to the Pantages Playhouse Theater sultry Maja Salvador and her energetic crew of Wendell Ramos, Joseph Marco and funnyman Pooh to electrify the city’s nightscape. Maja lived up to her billing as one of the Philippines talented - and hottest - actresses, gyrating to catchy dance tunes with her own twerk moves that all the more made the guys ask for more. Not to be outdone was Pooh, who cracked funny jokes that elicited bellylaughs from the audience. And of course, there was Wendell and Joseph to give the girls some kilig moments. True to its name, One Wild Night engaged Winnipeg’s partyphiles to a great night of fun, drawing loud cheers of oohs and aahs from the exuberant crowd. The concert, held last November 3, was also presented by Infinity Global Events, LLC in partnership with Berce, LLC.

MIND SPORTS MANITOBA:
Looking forward to 2018 and beyond By MSM Boardmembers
STEVE Udarbe, Mind Sports Manitoba (MSM) founder, every Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. welcomes old-timers and newcomers alike who come for drop-in chess and scrabble matches at the boardroom of Sinclair Park Community Centre Front entrance of the Centre.
in the city’s North End. These two games are the front and centre of MSM and tournaments have been staged in the past two years and as recent as September 2017, but plans are open for other mind sports in the future. Mind Sports Manitoba, a not for profit organization continued to live up to its name and held two open invitational scrabble tournaments in 2016 at the Sinclair Park Community Centre halls with encouraging participation from the community. An open invitational chess tournament was held in June 2017 at the same location with participation from outside the province. At The Second MSM Open Invitational Scrabble Tournament held March 5, 2016 at the Centre, a father and his son emerged as champions in each division. In the first division, son Richard Charach was top player while in the second division father Arthur Charach

The whole year round except Christmas and New Year season, between 6 and 9 pm Wednesdays, at the Sinclair Park Community Centre Boardroom, drop-in chess and scrabble matches are available among regular and new players present. Onsite clinics are also available from Steve with a chance to play a game with him. The organization has plans of holding more chess and scrabble tournaments in the future with sponsorship by private and government firms at the Centre. Chess and scrabble clinics for Winnipeg schoolchildren will continue when the schoolyear starts. The MSM’s official website is at http:// www.mindsportsmanitoba.weebly.com while the Facebook page is at http://www. facebook.com/mindsportsmb. Both are updated regularly but contents are not linked together as they are hosted by different media. There is a blog by Steve at the website as well as picture galleries from the tournaments as well. Steve’s efforts to train schoolchildren in chess and scrabble are only small steps taken to awaken interest in these sports but may result in having a national master(s) in chess and scrabble champions from Manitoba in the future but he says it is worth the effort he puts in school clinics and staging tournaments at the Centre. He promises bigger cash prizes for each future tournament courtesy of community and government sponsors and registration fees, as well as donations from political parties and the public in general. He wants to have more members for the organization and its activities and is willing to share the responsibilities in its events. He plans to have a chess and scrabble game day at busy malls like Garden City, Portage Place and Kildonan Place which are open to the public and pitting nonrated players with rated, seasoned players in actual games to showcase the organization’s activities and encourage more participation in the upcoming tournaments. Meanwhile, he will be busy with school clinics and drop in Wednesdays until the next invitational chess or scrabble tournament.

Create a foundation for a
healthy financial future When building a house, you always start with a solid foundation. It makes sense to do the same when building a financial plan. We can’t always predict or prevent difficulties in our lives, but we can still plan for some of the unknowns. When building a financial plan, it is important to first take care of the “noncontrollable events.”
You can take steps toward having good health or a long life, but you’re never completely in control. Most people have recognized the value of life insurance. It’s just as important to recognize the value of health insurance. If you became seriously ill, what would happen? How would your family cope? What would happen to your finances? According to the 2013 Sun Life Canadian Health Index, 40 percent of Canadians faced financial hardship after a serious health event and financed their health crisis in the following ways: • 22% turned to credit cards or personal lines of credit; • 22% accessed personal savings; • 12% borrowed from a loved one;
and • 5% were forced to either remortgage or sell their homes. You may assume that you’re adequately covered by the government or through your employer. However, here are a few questions to consider: • If you have disability insurance coverage, what portion of your pre-disability income would be replaced if you were unable to work? • What if you’re self-employed? How would you replace lost income? • How would you pay for necessary care (e.g. therapy, home care or assistive devices) beyond what the government provides? • If you leave a job or retire, what coverage do you have in case you become ill and need care?
What can you do to protect yourself? More health insurance solutions are now available to complement traditional insurance benefits and protect against a wider variety of risks. Personal health insurance can fill gaps for individuals who don’t have coverage
through their place of employment, or for small business owners. Expenses such as dentistry, prescription drugs, physiotherapy, ambulance, medical equipment and in-home nursing can add up very quickly. That’s where personal health insurance can come in.
Critical illness insurance offers help paying costs associated with life-altering illnesses. If you become sick with an illness covered by your policy and survive the waiting period, you receive a lump-sum cash payment – you decide how to spend the money. The benefit can alleviate financial worries so clients can concentrate on recovery. Long-term care insurance provides an income-style benefit to individuals who become dependent on someone else to care for themselves as a result of illness, injury, or deteriorated mental abilities. The weekly benefit may be used however, the insured person chooses. Coverage amounts aren’t linked to earnings and the benefits don’t end at any particular age.
