SWS: 63% of Pinoys believe drug suspects still killed despite surrendering Sixty-three percent of Filipinos believe there are suspects in the illegal drug trade who were killed despite surrendering, according to the Second Quarter 2017 Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released Friday. According to the survey, 30 percent of surveyed Filipinos strongly agreed, and another 32 percent somewhat agreed, with the survey question “May mga suspect sa illegal na bentahan ng duroga na sumuko na, pero pinatay pa.” Seventeen percent were undecided on the matter, while 11 percent somewhat disagreed, and nine percent strongly disagreed that there are drug suspects who surrendered but still got killed. At 75 percent, Metro Manila holds the highest proportion of those who strongly (41 percent), and somewhat agree (34 percent) with the survey question. Meanwhile, 63 percent of Mindanao respondents agreed with the statement (35 percent strongly agree, and 28 percent somewhat agree). Balance Luzon was at 63 percent (26 percent strongly agree, and 36 percent somewhat agree). Fifty-three percent of Visayas respondents, meanwhile agreed with the statement (28 percent strongly agree, 25 percent somewhat agree). The survey also said 17 percent of the respondents know

someone who was falsely summoned for the government’s “Oplan Tokhang.” Metro Manila, at 22 percent, held the highest proportion of agreement to the question: “Mayroon ba kayong kilalang tinawag ng mga pulis para sa Oplan Tokhang ngunit hindi naman sila drug pusher?” Eighteen percent of respondents in Visayas agreed with the statement, followed by Balance Luzon and Mindanao, both at 16 percent. The non-commissioned survey was conducted from June 23-26, 2017 through face-toface interviews with 1,200 adults aged 18 and above, equally distributed among Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Sampling error margins were at ±3 percent for national percentages, and ±6 percent for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. SWS was recently slammed by presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella for asking “leading and pointed questions” in their national surveys. He was reacting to a recent SWS survey on slain drug suspects, which said 54 percent of Filipinos strongly or somewhat agreed with the statement: “Marami sa mga pinatay ng mga pulis sa kampanya laban sa ilegal na droga ay hindi totoong nanlaban sa pulis.” —KG, GMA News

Duterte hopes Marawi siege will be over when September ends President Rodrigo Duterte wants the crisis in Marawi City to end before October. In his latest remark at the 116th Balangiga Encounter Day in Eastern Samar on Thursday, Duterte expressed hope to see the end of the Marawi crisis by the end of the month. “Today, we are still fighting but I hope that by the end of the month, we’d be able to resolve the issue,” he said. “As I have said, we are all Filipinos and if by the grace of God, we’re able to finish everything, the business of stopping

the rebellion, not necessarily killing, we will be happy,” he added. On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the Marawi siege would possibly end by September 30. Duterte, meanwhile, reiterated that there would be no fanfare when the soldiers completely take back Marawi. “Sinabi ko naman sa mga Maranao, mga Moro doon na I will leave some of the soldiers of the Engineering Brigade to help rebuild your city. And we will do that. At sinabi ko,

‘We will rebuild Marawi,’” he said. Duterte on Wednesday met with the United Kingdom Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to the Philippines Richard Graham in Malacañang where he said Mindanao would be a good place for investments once the fighting would be over. “President Duterte stressed that once the conflict in Marawi City ends, Mindanao could be a promising place for investments to come in,” a press release from Malacañang read. — RSJ, GMA News

Trump attending Asean meet in Philippines

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in the Philippines in November, the White House confirmed yesterday, after his attendance was previously in doubt. The visit will take place during a Nov. 314 tour that will also include stops in China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and the US state of Hawaii.

In addressing whether or not he would attend the ASEAN summit in Manila, Trump had previously said only that controversial President Duterte had “invited us so we’re going to see.” The White House said Trump’s visit would “strengthen the international resolve to confront the North Korean threat and ensure the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” – AP

The Philippines said on Thursday it was pursuing a long-delayed oil and gas exploration project with Chinese state-owned entity CNOOC Ltd and a Canada-listed company in an area near disputed waters in the South China Sea. Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said the Philippine government was also looking for a “win-win solution” with other South China Sea claimants, including China, to pave the way for oil and gas exploration within contested waters. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually, while Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims. The Philippines suspended exploration in the disputed waters, halting two projects, as it pursued and eventually won an arbitration case involving territorial disputes with China. Cusi, speaking at a media briefing after a meeting in Manila with other energy ministers from Southeast Asia, said the issue of energy exploration in South China Sea was not discussed. “We are looking for a winwin solution to move things forward so that we can enjoy whatever resources are there.” Cusi said he had put forward the Calamian project of PNOC Exploration Corp, a unit of state-owned Philippine National Oil Company, in partnership with CNOOC and Jadestone Energy Inc. to President Rodrigo Duterte for his approval. The Calamian project off the island of Palawan in west-

It lies near the country’s main oil and gas fields, including Malampaya, Nido, Cadlao and Matinloc. Exploration was delayed by “a lot of issues”, Cusi said. CNOOC has a 51 percent interest in the project, with PNOC Exploration keeping a 28 percent stake while Jadestone,

formerly Mitra Energy Ltd, has 21 percent. Cusi was scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart in Manila on Thursday to talk about energy cooperation. “We’re looking for a diplomatic way of doing things,” Cusi said. “I don’t like to (set) any timetable but we are trying our best to (lift the exploration moratorium) as soon as possible.” —Reuters

Philippines is world’s 56th most competitive economy MANILA - The Philippines moved up a notch in the World Economic Forum’s annual competitiveness ranking, with red tape, infrastructure and taxes among top drawbacks for investors. The Philippines ranked 56th out of 137 economies in the 2017 to 2018 Global Competitiveness Index, from 57th out of 138 in the 2016 to 2017 ranking, Geneva-based WEF said in a statement.

business Switzerland remained on top of the list, followed by the US, Singapore, Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Japan and Finland. Brunei and Vietnam overtook the Philippines from last year’s ranking, making it the 7th most competitive economy in

Southeast Asia. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand were behind regional leader Singapore. The WEF said the “most problematic” concern for the Philippines was an inefficient bureaucracy followed by inadequate infrastructure, corruption, tax regulations, tax rates and political instability. President Rodrigo Duterte, who assumed office last year, promised to cut red tape, build P8 trillion in new infrastructure and reform the tax system while cracking down on crime. The WEF said the world economy was “in much better shape” since the global crisis 10 years ago, citing “slow yet steady” growth that could hit 3.5 percent this year. “However, we are living in a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty,” WEF said, citing the need for world leaders to rethink their policies as technology advances. “Continued growth is far from guaranteed,” it said.ABSCBN News

odd news Britain’s oldest biker rides past 101st birthday Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A 101-year-old man, believed to be Britain’s oldest biker, still rides through his neighborhood streets every day. Jack Stares has owned multiple bikes since he first began riding 97 years ago and has renewed his motorcycle license 10 times since he turned 70 to remain on the road. “I was 7 years old and my dad brought home a motorbike which had been discarded and I got it going and would ride i t all over,” Stares said. “I was the only boy in the grammar school who went in on a motorcycle. It was quite a statement, and it still makes me chuckle now.” Stares celebrated his 101st birthday by testing his cycling skills on the British television show 100 Year Old Driving School. “If the examiner says ‘You’re not safe’, my instinct would be, ‘Look, get stuffed and mind your own business. I’m gonna carry on.’ That would be my instinct,” he said. “But I am so considerate to other people and their opinions that I would take it on board and take it very seriously and think, well should I be driving?” In the meantime Stares can be spotted completing his morning errands on his Yamaha 125 scooter and plans to renew his license once again next year. “I still get the same thrill from my scooter now as I got when I first started riding and when I had big powerful bikes,” he said. “I get excited about going to the shops because it means I get the feeling of being on the road again. There’s a true feeling of freedom.”

North Carolina man uses bare hands to pull snake from toilet Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man answered a neighbor’s call for help and ended up using his bare hands to pull a 6-foot snake out of the elderly man’s toilet. Mike Greene of Lattimore said his neighbor, an 88-year-old man, contacted him for help after finding a snake inside his home for the fourth time in the past six years. “He lives alone, he’s in very good health, very good shape, but he don’t do snakes,” Greene told WCNC-TV. Greene’s neighbor filmed as he plunged his hands into the toilet and grabbed the danger noodle by the tail. The video, posted to Facebook, shows him pulling what turns out to be a 6-foot serpent out of the commode. “Well look how big he is Mike. Golly, I told you he was big,” the elderly man can be heard saying in the video. Greene said the snake was the largest one he has removed from his neighbor’s house so far. He said the snake was not dangerous and he released it into a nearby field.

North Korea says U.S. ‘declared war,’ warns it could shoot down U.S. bombers NEW YORK/SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea’s foreign minister said on Monday President Donald Trump had declared war on North Korea and that Pyongyang reserved the right to take countermeasures, including shooting down U.S. bombers even if they are not in its air space. Ri Yong Ho said a Twitter message by Trump on Saturday, in which the president warned that the minister and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “won’t be around much longer” if they acted on their threats, amounted to a declaration of war.

world White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders on Monday denied the United States had declared war, calling the suggestion “absurd”. Speaking earlier in New York, where he had been attending the annual U.N. General Assembly, Ri told reporters: “The whole world should clearly remember it was the U.S. who first declared war on our country.” “Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country. “The question of who won’t be around much longer will be answered then,” Ri added. On Saturday, U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighters flew east of North Korea in a show of force after a heated exchange of rhetoric

PHL joins first eSports competition in Asian games in Turkmenistan ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan The Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat kicked off its first ever eSports competition as global interest surges in video games as a spectator sport. Teams from 10 countries including host Turkmenistan, China, Vietnam and the Philippines are competing in eSports at the games. The inclusion of eSports as a demonstration sport in the event hosted by the isolated Central Asian state ushers in a “new era in gaming,” the games’ organizers said on its website. The eSports competition features multiplayer tournaments of four popular computer games: Hearthstone, StarCraft II, Dota 2 and the King of Fighters XIV.

Electronic sports is making its debut at the games, which has a focus on martial arts popular in Asia such as jujitsu and taekwondo as well as on weightlifting and wrestling. Electronic sports is a booming industry worth billions of dollars and played by hundreds of millions of people around the world. It will also be a full medal sport at the 2022 Asian Games in China. The newly elected president of the Asian eSports Federation Kenneth Fok said in Ashgabat this month that he is seeking Olympic status for the discipline. But many traditional sporting bodies — including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) — have been cool on its claims to be a genuine sport.

Paolo Duterte’s supporters don black ‘No Way’ shirts in Davao DAVAO CITY - Some Davaoenos and employees of the Sangguniang Panlungsod expressed support for Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte by wearing black shirts that had the words “No Way” in front and a dragon figure at the back. The statement and the dragon were in reference to Duterte’s answer when Senator Antonio Trillanes IV asked him to show his dragon tattoo that allegedly proved his links to a drug triad. Trillanes shows photos of Paolo Duterte, traders with alleged drug links “No way,” Duterte said during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee’s probe into the P6.4

Is Rufa Mae Quinto

transferring to ABS-CBN? Rufa Mae Quinto will star in her first Ipaglaban Mo episode this Saturday, September 23, in an episode titled Duda. The actress is doing heavy drama this time which is far from her comedic roles in the past. “It’s the best experience siyempre kasi ako po ay pinagdrama tapos ‘yung character na pinili para sa akin sa Ipinaglaban Mo is todo talaga,” she said in an interview with PUSH. With this appearance on the Kapamilya show, does this mean that she’s transferring to ABS-CBN? “Sa ngayon I’m here so let’s put it that way. Siyempre Kapamilya rin ako dahil dito ako nakikita, di ba? So ‘yun na muna. Pero siyempre galing naman ako sa Kapuso pa rin. So I will never forget that, that I was a Kapuso for a long time. But sa ngayon I am a freelancer kasi nga ang asawa ko tagaAmerica so nag-migrate na kami doon. Pero ngayon dahil may offer dito sa Kapamilya so nandito ako ngayon,” she explained. Rufa further relayed that she will eventually go back to the United States to be with her husband. She shared that she is just in the Philippines because of the projects she’s doing. “Kasi green card holder na ako, aayusin ko na so siyempre kailangan ko na magstay doon pero uuwi pa rin ako dito for projects. Kasi siyempre obligayson ko na rin sa sarili ko, sa anak ko, dahil gusto ko maging proud siya na mama niya artista, alam mo ‘yun? Magiging mabuti kang example,” she stated. Rufa confessed that it’s also easier to look after her baby in the Philippines since a lot of people can help her out. “At the same time dito sa Pilipinas marami mag-aalaga rin sa anak ko kasi doon ako lang. Ayaw ng asawa ko [kumuha ng yaya], kasi daw all the girls or everyone does it na walang help. So parang ayaw niya kasi sabi ko magdala na lang ako ganon, ayaw niya. In fairness naman okay lang kahit ako na yaya ng anak ko okay lang kasi nakikilala ko siya eh, ‘yung anak mo. Tsaka pag meron ka namang sistema at kilala mo ang anak mo mabilis at tsaka mabait siya,” she said.BY KRISTHOFF CAGAPE

One of the Philippines’ most sought-after premier talents Quezon City, Philippines (September 15, 2017) -- Weekend family bonding will get more fun and exciting as ABS-CBN finally premieres the local adaptation of South Korea’s hit mystery music game show “I Can See Your Voice”, that will be seen in the Philippines via ABS-CBN and outside the country via The Filipino Channel (TFC), with its pilot episode streaming simulcast its local airing on September 16 (Manila time) via TFC online (www. TFC.tv) in key countries worldwide. Led by the country’s most soughtafter and award-winning host Luis Manzano, “I Can See Your Voice” is the first game format to be localized by ABS-CBN in partnership with Korea’s CJ E&M. “What sets us apart is the humor that we only Filipinos have. This show is very casual and relaxed. We just want to create an atmosphere wherein you can laugh. There is not much tension in this show”, said Manzano. Despite the fact that he is already a seasoned host, Manzano admitted that he still feels pressured, especially when the representative of the Korean franchise visited the country. “He said, ‘In Korea, we have three hosts. Here, we have only you.’ Apparently, in Korea, there’s one host, one comedian, and a singer. Well at least I have done two out of three”, he jokingly added. “I Can See Your Voice” features six secret songers (a term coined by the program as a play on the word singer), and a guest star who must guess who among the contestants is a SEE-nger (one who can sing) and who among them is a SEE-ntunado (one who cannot sing or tone deaf). Helping the guest star make the cut,

a group of SING-vestigators composed of Angeline Quinto, Alex Gonzaga, Kean Cipriano, Wacky Kiray, and Andrew E will comment and give their opinions every round. For the first round called Stop, LOOKs and Listen, the guest star must eliminate one secret songer based on how he or she looks. To help the guest star decide, a video profile showing the lives of the secret songers plus a very quick preview of their actual singing voice will also be played. At the end of the round, the eliminated secret songer must step on the Stage of Truth and sing live to reveal if he or she is a SEE-nger or a SEEntunado. The eliminated secret songer will receive a consolation prize of Php 5,000. The game gets tougher in the second round called The Voice is SYNCHING, where the five remaining secret songers must lip-synch a song. If the secret songer is a SEE-nger, he/she will lip-synch to his/her own voice and if he/she is a SEE-ntunado, he/she will sing along to someone else’s voice. Two contestants must bid goodbye at the end of the round and will receive Php 10,000 each. In the final round called I Like to PROVE it, PROVE it, the last three secret songers will have their last chance to convince the guest star to pick them as the winner. Each one will present a piece of evidence, such as a photograph or a medal, to prove that they can really sing. The guest star again picks two contestants to eliminate, who will then go home with Php 15,000 each. The last secret songer standing will be named the winner, get Php 25,000 cash, and sing a duet with the guest star.

Student visa is the way to go

COMMON question that is addressed to me comes from people who would like their niece or nephew to immigrate to Canada. In many cases, because their relatives do not have the work or education requirements to immigrate to Canada or they are too old to be adopted, I have frequently suggested that they consider the idea of getting a student visa. Recently, I was assigned a 22- year old male intern from Ukraine and I asked him the following question. “If I have a young relative living abroad and want to bring him/her to Canada as a foreign student, what do I have to do?” The following was his answer – it shows that what he was able to find on the internet was a good example of what any youth can do without having to use a lawyer or consultant. “One of the easiest ways for this person (someone wanting to study and immigrate to Canada) would be getting into college. That will allow him/her to get a good quality education that Canadian colleges offer, get a temporary job permit or even temporary residence. In order for the young per-

FTER the precipitous drop of 10 notches in the 2016 Global Competitiveness Index, it’s good to see the Philippines improving even by a notch in this year’s ranking. The annual assessment of productivity and prosperity, prepared by the World Economic Forum, ranked the Philippines 56th overall out of 137 economies. The country, however, dropped two places in regional competitiveness, overtaken by Vietnam and Brunei to be the eighth among the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. In terms of procedures for starting a business – one of the 12 pillars on which the rankings were based – the Philippines was also rated the second worst globally after Venezuela. President Duterte has made the right noises about encouraging job-generating enterprises by cutting red tape in business procedures. The order, however, has yet to trickle down, with even barangay units adding layers of red tape before anyone can start, operate and shut down a business. The WEF measures competitiveness based on infrastructure, institutions, health and primary education, the macroeconomic environment, higher education and training, technological readiness, labor market efficiency, financial market development, goods market efficiency, market size, business sophistication and innovation. The Philippines fared best in the macroeconomic environment, where it ranked 22nd overall, as well as in market size where it placed 27th. But in terms of goods market efficiency, which includes the number of procedures for starting a business, the country ranked 136th, and placed 125th in terms of burden of customs procedures. The annual assessment also includes an Executive Opinion Survey, in which the respondents cited bureaucratic inefficiency as the biggest problem in doing business in the Philippines. This was followed by inadequate infrastructure, corruption, tax regulation and tax rates. The competitiveness rankings track levels of prosperity, with Switzerland holding on to the top ranking for the ninth consecutive year. The United States came second followed by Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong, Sweden, the UK, Japan and Finland. Efforts have been undertaken in recent years to improve Philippine competitiveness, but other countries are doing the same and achieving greater progress. The latest index should inspire more effort all around, or else the country could be left behind by all its neighbors.Philstar

Now we have an inkling of where all that violence comes from, and why Du30 believes in an eye for an eye (the law of talion or retaliation) or retribution in fighting criminality. Surely being beaten black and blue till you’re close to death by beasts masquerading as your brothers can make the victim believe that humans are intrinsically evil. The senators who have confessed to being subjected to hazing belong to top fraternities. This raises the question: since they know how cruel and dangerous it can be, why wasn’t hazing banned a long time ago? My guess is like the Cosa Nostra and other organized crime rings, fraternity members are bound by omerta, the code of silence. Even if lawmakers worry that their children and grandchildren might one day be maimed or even killed in a fraternity or sorority hazing, everyone fears censure by their “brothers” and “sisters” if they denounce the violent initiation and propose a ban. Now they have been handed an opportunity to stop this insanity, following the murder of University of Sto. Tomas law freshman Horacio “Atio” Castillo III, a neophyte of the UST Faculty of Law’s Aegis Juris fraternity. Since no senator

IKE many people, I have seen loved ones and friends suffer from cancer. I am sure that for most of us, the most dreadful words we can hear from our doctor say is: “I am sorry but you have cancer.” I was, therefore, very interested in the latest edition of the Economist magazine when they featured a special section on “Treating Cancer.”It says that cancer is the world’s second leading cause of death after heart disease – 8.8 million in 2015. Around 75 percent of cancer deaths are in low and middle income countries like the Philippines and the number of cases has increased by 33 percent because of ageing and population growth. However, I was also surprised to read that in America, 67 percent of cancer patients will survive for at least five years. The article answered two questions I have always wanted to ask. The first is about chemotherapy; and the second is about the new branch of therapy – immunotherapy – that seems to have gained popularity in the medical world. On chemotherapy “Though few cancers can be cured with chemotherapy on its own, many can be set back a long way and controlled for quite some time. Chemotherapies, like radiation therapies,

Surely being beaten black and blue till you’re close to death by beasts masquerading as your brothers can make the victim believe that humans are intrinsically evil. seems to belong to the fraternity, it should be easier for the chamber to probe the case and craft the necessary legislation to prevent more hazing deaths. We don’t know if any congressman is a member of Aegis Juris; the fraternity deactivated its website earlier this week. *** Fraternity antics have always baffled me. As a student at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, our classes at the College of Arts and Sciences were regularly disrupted by members of a fraternity that congregated at the ground floor canteen and screamed profanities, loud enough to be heard all the way to the top floor. Once, during one of my Spanish classes, two or three students sauntered in and smashed a bottle of beer on the head of one of my classmates, a frat member and folk singer, seated in the back row. Blood spurted from his head, mingling with the beer that trickled down his face. The culprits fled; my classmate didn’t try to chase them. Some students helped him make his way to the nearest clinic. Around that time, the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity began its annual “Oblation Run,” with members running around UP campuses buck-naked but with masks on. The runners are supposed to symbolize the naked hero. The ritual gave kids les-

sons on the male anatomy in the pre-internet age, but otherwise we weren’t really sure how running around naked with your identity concealed could be heroic and contribute to character building. The ritual did celebrate freedom of expression – precious during the martial law years. UP administrators obviously did not think it was a good idea to stop students from parading around campus looking like the Oblation. Beyond the silliness, APO – and practically all major fraternities in UP Diliman – have figured in rumbles and hazing controversies. It must be teen testosterone running amuck, a sort of phase two in the traditional Pinoy rite of passage to manhood, phase one being preadolescent circumcision. In the case of tuli, however, the operation serves a useful purpose, for health and hygiene. What useful purpose might be served in hitting a “brother” with a paddle until he’s battered and approaching death? The only lesson that can be derived from such madness is cruelty. *** Maybe testosterone awakens a primeval instinct to subject oneself to a physical, violenceprone rite of passage to manhood. During the age of the hunter-gatherers, however, such rituals were meant for

SKETCHES something undeniably useful especially for the tribe: young men were tested for their capability to fight enemies, hunt for food and protect the community. In our age, what is being tested? For the ability to provide food, a neophyte can order pizza for the entire fraternity using his cell phone. Fraternities can engage in rumbles, but over what? Rival frats are not seizing territory or snatching and raping women or stealing livestock and crops. If fraternity members want to unleash violence, they should go where real courage is tested, by fighting alongside the military against Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Mindanao. Those soldiers go into battle fully aware of the threat of being fatally shot, maimed or killed in a bomb blast or, worse, dying a horrible death if they are snatched by the terrorists. The soldiers have likely seen video footage of the terrorists decapitating their captives, slowly across the neck using a blunt knife while the poor victim squeals like a pig. Despite such horrific images,

those soldiers go into battle, ready for the worst, to keep the nation safe. Now that’s real courage. Those are genuinely tough cojones, bro. Not like boys behaving badly and then turning tail and running to momma (and frat brothers in government) when the manure hits the fan. It’s the depth of cowardice to inflict harm on a helpless person, especially in the name of a twisted brotherhood. While moving to ban hazing altogether, lawmakers may also discuss ways by which youths can channel their violent tendencies to positive uses, perhaps through contact sports competitions. President Duterte should go ahead and revive the ROTC and, for the girls, the Citizen Army Training or CAT. Or how about summer placement programs with the military, such as keeping our soldiers company on that rickety ship sitting on Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea? It could teach young men something about nationalism. Lawmakers should not want their own loved ones to suffer the fate of Atio Castillo. Youths want a sense of belonging and fraternities and sororities meet that need, so these organizations cannot be banned. But rites of acceptance must be reasonable and civilized. Humiliation and any form of physical harm must be strictly prohibited. Legislators should bear in mind that the lives they will save if they ban hazing could be their own grandchildren’s. Something good might yet come out of Atio Castillo’s death.Philstar

Cancer treatments Elfren S. Cruz

BREAKTHROUGH are often used to mop up the cancer left over when primary tumors have been excised. One problem with chemotherapy is that cancers can become resistant to it. Most cancers are genetically heterogeneous, because the cells accumulate new mutations as they grow. Some of these mutations can make the cells less susceptible to the chemotherapy. As treatment continues, such cells become more numerous, and as they divide they go on to accumulate mutations that make them even more resistant – the cancer evolves resistance to chemotherapy as an infection can evolve resistance to antibiotics. That is why chemotherapies are now often used in combination. It is harder to evolve resistance to two or three drugs at the same time.” Chemotherapy also sometimes causes side effects like fatigue, hair loss, mood changes and nausea. Some have long

It is hoped that as more advances in medical research are made, treatments will become cheaper. term effects like damaging the heart, the nerves and fertility. The severity of the side effects can vary from person to person. Some side effects, like nausea, can also be treated with secondary drugs under certain circumstances. Immunotherapies There is a promising new class of treatment known as immunotherapy – the “treatment of diseases by inducing or enhancing or suppressing an immune response.” Although immunotherapy is observed to work in many cancers, research across all types of cancers tried so far, only about 20 percent respond to this new approach. It seems to be still in the early stages of being a real cure. According to the Economist article: “Though immunotherapy is still new, it has already radically shifted the treatment and research landscape. A wide range of combinations is being tested in the hope of improving patients’ responses. A trial combining Opdivo and Yervoy in malignant melanoma has shown tumors to shrink in 60 percent to 70 percent of patients ( although it causes serious side effects).

Dr. Wolchok says it is not yet possible to calculate the median survival time in the trial population – because more than half of the patients are still alive...This enthusiasm may lead to wasted efforts, and even delay progress. But there is no doubt that immunotherapy will from here on be a key part of treatment for a growing number of cancers. Perhaps the most telling measure of its success is that some oncologists have started to complain, quietly, of a shortage of specialist doctors. Patients keep coming back instead of dying.” Costs of cancer treatments Cancer treatments today are very expensive. It is hoped that as more advances in medical research are made, treatments will become cheaper. Here is the cost evaluation of cancer treatment by the Economist: “Novartis’s new therapy costs $475,000. Genome editing treatments seem likely to be the most expensive cancer treatments the world has ever seen.“ There are several reasons for the present high cost. The most obvious is that research and development costs are very

high. The new treatments, for example, require a pharmaceutical company to make the appropriate “antibodies.” These are more expensive to make than the smaller molecules used in older therapies. Hopefully, generic versions will someday be discovered that will be cheaper. However, the Economist also said : “But the overwhelming factor [ for the very high prices] is that in America, the world’s largest market for drugs, prices are set by what the market will bear. When life-saving drugs are available from only one or two providers, high prices are given. That is why pharma companies have piled into oncology over the past decade. They see a market which, by 2025, is forecast to be worth $45 billion to $100 billion a year.” But, there is also a warning regarding these new cancer treatments. “The immune system’s complexity means that it will not always react as doctors hope. Some treatments will prove less effective than at first they seemed. This is a particular problem for cancer drugs, which tend to be approved after comparatively small trials. A recent study of 36 drugs approved between 2008 and 2012 found that it did not help patients live longer. The price of these drugs ranged from $20,000 to almost $170,000 per patient.” Hopefully, the world can unite and declare a War on Cancer.Philstar

This simple test can determine if you’re good enough to be a mechanic B EING an automotive mechanic may not be the most glamorous profession, but it’s a darn admirable one. After all, while most people would panic at the sight of a Check Engine light, to someone mechanically inclined it’s just a problem to solve—a challenge even. And let’s face it, there’s a windfall of pogi points for you if you can help a lady with a car problem. But not everyone can be a mechanic, and that’s a good thing if you think about it. During a tour of Mazda’s facilities in Malaysia, arranged by the Japanese carmaker’s Philippine counterpart, we learned of a simple but very thorough test that can determine if an applicant will be a capable mechanic. Mazda has been doing this for decades, and it swears by this test. What happens is that potential mechanics are shown this image: And then they are given this wire: The metal wire is plain and very pliable. What applicants need to is to reshape the piece of wire, using only their hands, into the form of the diagram. Placing the wire on top of the diagram is not allowed, and there’s a 20minute time limit. According to after sales advisor Cheah Wing Yew, the exercise is to test hand-eye coordination in people. He learned it decades ago from a German car brand, and it has served Mazda well in recruiting the best mechanics. Yew said a person can see the diagram, but not everyone can command his or her fingers to form the wire in the exact same pattern— actually very few people can do it perfectly. fter the applicant forms the wire, the managers grade his work according to how accurate the diagram is replicated. A perfect score is 100%, and the passing grade is 50%. Yew clarified that they were taught to recognize genius in its many forms, and that failing this test simply means a person’s talent lies elsewhere. Naturally we all tried the wire test. Being no stranger to wires (Bosconians represent!), I was able to get a score of 70%. It felt good to know I’m mechanic material, but I’ll stick to my day job for now.(By Dinzo Tabamo)

Kylie Padilla to body-shamers:

I feel so womanly, cushiony Almost two months after giving birth, Kylie Padilla has become the target of body-shaming on social media. Last Friday, Padilla took to Instagram to express her thoughts on the issue, after some netizens commented on her weight and body shape. “I recently experienced some body-shaming on my last post at the gym and I didn’t really get my feelings hurt but I had this thought, people know I just gave birth, right? Still, comments kept coming in about how fat I was. And guess what yes, I am fat. I am overweight,” the young actress wrote. Padilla gave birth last month to her and Aljur Abrenica’s first child. The actress said it was only after giving birth that she started to love her body. “Before having a baby I had a body that was hungry, a body I treated so badly that I got used to being depressed only because I was starving. A body I was disappointed with, no matter how thin and tired I was I still was not happy because I let society tell me my body was not “perfect,” she said. “So even after carrying a baby for 9 months and giving birth to a new life I still fall under ‘fat’ or ‘curvy’ or whatever label people want to give me then so be it. I’m happy to be there,” Padilla added. For Padilla, her baby and her family are more important than having a perfect body. She also said she feels that her baby likes it better if she is bigger. “First and foremost a baby that needs his constant supply of milk and a body that needs to recover heal and be nourished, with food and exercise. And oh a man that actually enjoys this curvy body. I seem to like it too, I feel so womanly and cushiony hahha lol kulang pa nga eh feeling ko mas masaya baby ko kung mas malaki pa ako,” Padilla said.abs-cbn.com

Lea Salonga was just too good for

‘I Can See Your Voice’ She has been judging talent on “The Voice” since its first season. And Lea Salonga just reminded viewers why she’s a constant feature on the talent contest, showcasing her knack for evaluating a person’s singing abilities when she appeared on “I Can See Your Voice.” Unlike previous celebrity guests, Salonga had little trouble separating contestants who could back their boast with actual talent from those who were trying to fool her into thinking otherwise. She was on point all night and easily whittled down the pool of six to two --both of which turned out to be real singers. But it was MJ Cayabyab, an aspiring actor and singer who works as a call-center agent, who convinced Salonga that he’s the real deal. His prize? P25,000 and a “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” duet with the Tony winner. Cayabyab also automatically qualifies for “Tawag ng Tanghalan.” Based on a Korean show of the same title, “I Can See Your Voice” airs Saturdays after “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and Sundays after “Rated K”. Shoulder blades squeezed together bringing the shoulders back, chest open and chin is tucked. Now, compare that posture to an adult. T h e r e are many strengthening and stretches to help improve the posture to avo i d t h e development of neck pain, wrists pain, shoulder pain and back pain. Unless you

are disciplined and conscious about correct postures and exercises, you can be successful in preventing injuries caused by poor sitting posture. Poor sitting posture can cause: • Tight pectorals that can lead to numbness and tingling to the arm/ hands. • Sore upper back, shoulders and neck. • Low back pain. • Tight neck muscles in front and back that can lead to tension headaches. Tips on how to improve your sitting posture: • Ensure that your desk and your chair is ergonomically correct (can work with an ergonomist or occupational therapistprovided by your workplace). • When you can take frequent breaks away from your desk and your computer (walk around to relieve your spine from the pressure of sitting down). • Practice sitting upright (shoulder

back and down) daily working up from 10 seconds squeezing your shoulder blades together and release for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times for 3 rounds. • Stretch your pecs against a door frame holding for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side for three sets on each sides. PBA: Meralco bumps off pesky Blackwater to advance

Baser Amer scored 31 points, and Allen Durham flirted with a triple double as Meralco defeated Blackwater 104-96 at Araneta Coliseum on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup. Top-seeded Meralco faced all sorts of adversity in the decider, but the Bolts weathered the early hot shooting by Henry Walker, erased a double-digit deficit, and bucked a late injury to Durham to arrange a best-of5 series with Star in the next round. After trailing by 12 points at halftime, Meralco chipped away at the deficit until Amer’s

layup tied the score at 84-all in the fourth, before back-to-back 3-pointers by Jared Dillinger and Amer put Meralco up for good. “Tough game. Talagang nagtiyaga lang kami,” Amer said. But there was a nervous moment for Meralco when Durham’s right foot landed on JP Erram, forcing Durham to sit on the bench for a few minutes to shake the pain off. The team doctor ruled it a spring, according to TV broadcast. With Walker misfiring and Meralco’s local players outshining their Blackwater counter-

parts, the Bolts managed to hold on to the lead. “When Baser and JD started hitting those 3s, it started to open things up,” Meralco coach Norman Black said. “I think the most important thing is we had to play better defense on Walker. “We were really gambling on the fact that he didn’t rest in the first half and we were hoping he might wear down in the second half.” Durham registered 18 points, 20 rebounds and 9 assists, playing with a sprained foot in the game’s homestretch. -ABS-CBN News

NBA: Silver expects players to stand for anthem NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said on Thursday he expects players to stand during the US national anthem, which has long been a league rule, rather than follow the lead of NFL players who have been kneeling in protest. The controversial issue of kneeling during the anthem has become more prevalent in the NFL in a gesture intended to call attention to what protesting players see as a pattern of racism in the treatment of AfricanAmericans by US police. But Silver does not anticipate such gestures on the NBA’s hardwood courts when the 2017-18 season begins next month. “On the anthem specifically, we have a rule that requires our players to

stand for the anthem. It’s been a rule as long as I’ve been involved with the league, and my expectation is that our players will continue to stand for the anthem,” Silver told a news conference after the NBA’s Board of Governors meetings. “Last year many of our teams locked arms during the anthem, which I felt was a respectful show of unity. Many of our players have spoken out already about their plan to stand for the anthem. And I think they understand how divisive an issue it is in our society right now.” The gesture was initiated last season by then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and has since caught the attention of US President Donald Trump, who

last week called for NFL owners to fire those who refuse to stand. Two days after Trump’s comments, NFL teams staged a show of solidarity on Sunday by kneeling, linking arms or staying off the field during the US national anthem. “It’s disheartening to me to see so much disunity in our society. I think that sports historically, and in the NBA in particular, has been a unifying force,” said Silver. Silver did not say what would happen if any NBA players refused to stand during the “Star-Spangled Banner,” simply adding: “All I can say is if that were to happen, we’ll deal with it when it happens.” — Reuters

Roach says Crawford camp waited for Pacquiao to get old MANILA, Philippines – Unified super lightweight champion Terence Crawford may have gotten a shot at Manny Pacquiao had his camp aggressively pursued the fight sooner. That is the belief of Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach, who said that his 38-year-old prized ward is now too old to fight the younger Crawford. In an interview with Marcos Villegas of FightHub, the bespectacled trainer shared his thoughts about Pacquiao taking on the dangerous 29-year-old Crawford. “Well that’s a big fight but I also want him to fight Manny Pacquiao...Do we fight at ’40 (super lightweight) or do we fight at ’47 (welterweight)? I’d like to see Manny go down to ‘40 for that fight because Manny has much more firepower at ‘40 than he does at ’47,” Roach explained. Pacquiao currently campaigns in the welterweight division,

while Crawford has unified the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super lightweight titles. A few years ago, there had been talk about pitting them against each other in a showdown. But that fight never materialized, and Roach said it might already be too late. “But it’s been a long time and Manny is 38 years old and he’s like 22 and competition-wise, it’s getting to the point where it’s very difficult to be in with the younger generations,” the multi-awarded cornerman continued. Indeed, Pacquiao’s age showed in his most recent outing wherein he struggled against a muchyounger Jeff Horn, losing to the Australian in their July 2 fight in Brisbane, Australia. The Filipino icon appeared to be a shell of his former self as he found difficulty in dealing with Horn’s rough tactics during their 12-round bout. Philstar

Meet the new

‘Tomb Raider’

Warner Bros. Pictures has unleashed the official teaser trailer and poster for the new action-adventure, “Tomb Raider,” the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero. “Tomb Raider” opens in Philippine cinemas March 15, 2018. The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina,” “The Danish Girl”) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (“The Wave”), with Oscar-winner Graham King (“The Departed”) producing under his GK Films banner. The film’s production began on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. In the film, Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve

the puzzle of his mysterious death. Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider. “Tomb Raider” also stars Dominic West (“Money Monster,” “300”), Walton Goggins (“The Hateful Eight,” “Django Unchained”) and Daniel Wu (AMC’s “Into the Badlands”). “Tomb Raider” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.Philstar

Harana (‘Serenade’) Manitoba: Mga Kundiman, atbp By Gemma Dalayoan

THE Disciples United Church on 396 Broadway was filled with almost 200 music-loving people titillated by the melodious songs rendered by seven finalists of the Philippine Art Song Singing Contest sponsored by the Philippine Canadian Arts Society of Manitoba led by its president, Dante Aviso and his sister, Tess Aviso of the Sun Life Financial Services. The songs rendered by the seven finalists were all in Filipino. All songs rendered for the first part of the program were accompanied by a professional pianist, Renate Rosso, and the second part was accompanied by a karaoke-like machine. The finalists were: Analiza Marinelli, Camilo Lotino, Faith Arintok, Kaira Mae Ubando, Glenn Naquila, Christian Ray Palisoc, Jamie Katryn Ramalloza. They sang in sequence as named above. As in any event, the program opened with the singing of Lupang Hinirang sung by Marilou Clavecilla and O Canada by Paul Ong. Refreshments were served during the intermission. While the judges were deliberating as to who were the winners, Paul Ong sang a lively song , ”Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika” to the delight of the audience. Those present had their own favourites but it was obvious who would be the winner due to the applause given while one of the contestants was singing. The two finalists, namely Faith Arintok and Kaira Mae Ubando, were very close in the points given by the judges. In the end the winners declared were the following: Glenn Naquila, first prize; $750; Faith Arintok, second prize; $400; Kaira Mae Ubando, third prize; $200. The audience was very pleased with the results. Judges were the following: Heber Bartolome, Marvin Sison, and Marilou Clavecilla. A commotion followed after the announcement of the winners as admirers rushed to

congratulate the winners and posed with them for pictures as taken by their friends and relatives and professional photographers, Alex Canlapan and HB Henry Balanial Photography. Some posed with very important guests such as the Honourable Bernadette Smith, MLA for Point Douglas, Councillor Mike Pagtakhan also of Point Douglas, and Honourable Flor Marcelino, MLA for Logan. The whole show that ended at 90 p.m. was emceed by Dante Aviso and Jenith Calambacan. Everyone went home pleased and happy to have attended a very successful event.

You can also continue working even if you are no longer a full-time student but have been one since you started a program in Canada, and are now studying part-time because it is your last semester and you do not need to take a full course. There are several options for a student to work in Canada after graduation. The key point is to get a work permit. One of them is called post-graduation work permit (PGWP). Not all colleges can give you an opportunity to obtain the permit, so it is best to contact the Ministry of Education of the province or territory to get more information on it. Another option is called Express Entry. This allows you to apply for permanent residence after recent graduation if you can take part in the Canadian economy, are familiar with Canadian society, know English or French, and have the appropriate work experience. What should be taken into consideration before any decisions are made is the cost of studying and living in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, average tuition fee for international students for undergraduate studies in 2017/18 is US $20,540 and for postgraduate, average cost is US $13,250, which makes postgraduate studies much cheaper and more reasonable to do. “We take grave exception to the sweeping and politicized statement delivered by Iceland on behalf of a group of States,” the Philippine Mission to the UN in Geneva said. The Philippine Mission to the UN in Geneva lamented the statement which “tarnishes” the country’s record before the international community. Maria Teresa Almojuela, Philippine Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, criticized some of the countries that signed the statement. “It is ironic that many of these States joining the statement are the very same States that are the sources of arms, bombs, machines and mercenaries that maim, kill and massacre thousands of people all over the world, not only during their colonial past, but even up to today,” Almojuela said. The countries that signed the joint statement are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Ukraine. “We reiterate, that as a member of the [Human Rights Council], the Philippines is expected to uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human

(Junie Josue, Lead Pastor, International Worship Centre, 1077 St James Street, Winnipeg Manitoba, 204-774-4478)

should take into consideration the cost of living in Canada. For example, Canadian student visa requires you to have at least US $8,100 a year besides your tuition fees to cover your living expenses. Another necessity is compulsory health insurance that will cost you an additional US $485 a year. But be aware that there are multiple scholarships, grants and bursaries available for international students to study in Canada at all levels. Make sure you check every opportunity before you consider paying with your own money. A really good resource for that is the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program.” Student visa is a growing option for people wanting to immigrate to Canada. rights and to cooperate fully with the Council,” the statement read. Almojuela ,on the other hand, said that the 39 nations presumed to teach the Philippines about rights without basis and contrary to the objectives of the UN. “These are also the same States that trumpet the right to life, but would at the same time, flaunt their disrespect for the rights of the unborn,” Almojuela said. The Philippines’ Commission on Human Rights is already functioning independently in accordance with the Paris Principles, Almojuela added. “There is no culture of impunity in the Philippines. We have internal mechanisms to investigate all law enforcement operations that lead to deaths,” she added. Evan Garcia, Permanent Representative of the Philippine Mission to the UN in Geneva, said that the 39 nations that signed the statement failed to take into consideration the commitment that Manila made during the adoption of the country’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The Philippines only accepted 103 out of 257 recommendations from UN member-states and merely “noted” another 99 in its UPR. Garcia insisted that the Philippines committed to implementing the recommendations of other countries that were only initially noted. ‘PHL open to experts but not Callamard’

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, meanwhile, reiterated that the Philippines is open to allow experts from the international community, with the exception of Callamard, to look into the human rights situation in the country. Cayetano said that Callamard had already prejudged the government as guilty of committing human rights violations. “It is very unfortunate that instead of engaging us constructively, some western countries would rather criticize and impose conditions as if they can do a better job than the Philippine Government in protecting the Filipino people,” Cayetano said. In his recent bilateral meeting with US State Secretary Rex Tillerson, Cayetano said that the Philippines is welcome to receive independent observers and investigators that would look into the country’s so-called war on drugs. Despite criticism from the international community, the Philippine Mission in Geneva expressed its willingness to continue to engage in constructive dialogue regarding concerns on human rights.Philstar
