Sotto, Trillanes bicker over inviting Paolo Duterte, Mans Carpio to shabu shipment probe SENATE Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III took offense on a remark by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV insinuating that the blue ribbon committee is appearing to be “lawyering” for Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo “Pulong” Duterte and lawyer Manases Carpio. At the sixth hearing of the Senate committee Thursday, Trillanes said there was “enough information” to invite both Duterte and Carpio. Carpio, a lawyer, is the husband of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, sister of Paolo. “I believe we have enough information that would warrant the invitation for both attorney Mans Carpio and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte to this committee hearing,” Trillanes said. “I heard the majority floor leader that it’s hearsay. Hindi ito korte ha. This is an investigative body. We’re just establishing the truth, fine-ferret out natin yung truth. Let them defend themselves. Huwag muna tayo mag-abogado sa kanila,” he told the committee chaired by Senator Richard Gordon. Trillanes said inviting the two will give them the opportunity to “clear their names” after they were both tagged to be behind the so-called Davao Group allegedly involved in the smuggling of shipments at the Bureau of Customs (BOC). Sotto answered back, saying he was not lawyering for Paolo Duterte and Carpio. “Hindi tayo nag-a-abogado. I’m just saying, ang sinabi ko, sabi ko pag-aralan muna ng committee sapagkat hearsay. It doesn’t mean na huwag. Huwag mo ako pagbibintangan,” Sotto said. Trillanes then said the committee should not treat the two as “sacred cows.” Sotto said the blue ribbon committee should focus the probe on the P6.4-billion shabu shipment that slipped past the BOC last May. “Doon tayo mainit dapat at doon ang concentration natin. Huwag natin ihalo yung mga taong walang kinalaman sa shipment na yun,” Sotto said. — RSJ, GMA News

MANILA, Philippines - Remnants of the Maute terror group still holding out in Marawi City are struggling to survive since they are now running out of food and ammunition, a senior military commander said yesterday. Col. Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of Task Group Ranao, said there are indications that after more than three months, the fighting in the city will end soon. “There are lots of indicators showing that they are now running out of ammunition and food as shown by their muchweakened resistance in most areas where they are currently confined. Hopefully in the next few weeks this siege will be over,” said Brawner. The civilian hostages being used as human shields by the terrorists have prevented the military from delivering the final blow to the Maute members to end the conflict. “While our assault is ongoing, we are making sure that we will spare the lives of the hostages,” Brawner said. While the ground assaults are carefully being sustained, there are efforts to make sure that not a single terrorist – including overall leader Isnilon Hapilon – could slip out of the military cordon around the main battle area. Local officials of towns around Lanao Lake are assisting government troops to prevent the remaining terrorists from escaping. There were reports that terrorist sympathizers are now putting up as much as P50,000 rental fee for each boat ride that would ferry them toward the main battle area from the other side of the

lake. “We are able to get full cooperation of the town mayors around Lake Lanao in barring any boat across Lake Lanao from sailing toward the main battle area,” Brawner said. On Monday, 10 suspected terrorist sympathizers on board two rented motorized boats were intercepted and killed in an encounter with patrolling elements of the Army’s Special Forces. Malacañang welcomed yesterday the offer of Australia to train government troops to boost their capability in the fight against Islamic terrorists. In a statement, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said the government is open to get help from its allies to fight terrorism. “The fight against terrorism – to reiterate – is not only the concern of the Philippines, but it is a concern of many nations around the world,” he said. He also assured the public that Australia’s help will be limited to training, upgrading of technical capabilities and intelligence tactics. Despite the unwarranted attacks of President Duterte against some foreign nations and the United Nations for meddling in his drug war and foreign policy, Abella said the administration has not closed its doors to any assistance from other countries, including allies. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Australia is ready to help the Philippines in the fight against terrorism. Australia, which has an extensive defense cooperation with Manila, has already deployed two high-tech AP-3C Orion aircraft for surveillance. – With Sheila Crisostomo

Duterte to go after 7 firms MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte yesterday vowed to go after a Lopez-owned firm and six other companies that allegedly owe debts to the government as he accused their owners of benefiting from corruption. He lamented that the government has condoned the debts of Benpres Holdings, which has been renamed Lopez Holdings, and six other companies to state-run Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP). “I would go after the elite. I will not name the person but their companies then, Benpres and about six other companies, they have debts to the DBP… They used the money of the people to finance their business but they… keep the revenues,” the President said. “And yet, they were not able to pay and it was condoned by government,” he added. “I said I would go after the elite in this country because they are really the ones who are benefiting from all of these things.”

The Lopez family also owns broadcast giant ABS-CBN, which has been accused by Duterte of biased reporting. He also announced a plan to sell the Mile Long property in Makati to fund the government’s housing program. Mile Long is a property in Makati occupied by Sunvar Realty since 1982. Sunvar is owned by the Rufino and Prieto families, also the owners of newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer. Duterte has accused the Inquirer of publishing “garbage” stories that were intended to discredit him.

Duterte claimed the Rufinos and Prietos got the prime lot, which is owned by the National Power Corp., because of sweetheart deals with previous administrations. He has said he wants the two families charged with economic sabotage, a nonbailable offense, for refusing to turn over the property to the government. The Office of the Solicitor General asked Sunvar to vacate Mile Long this month. The company has complied. The Prietos have also sold their controlling shares in the Inquirer to businessman Ramon Ang, a supporter of the President. Philstar

MANILA, Philippines Twenty-five members of the House of Representatives endorsed yesterday an impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno. The complaint, filed by lawyer Larry Gadon for alleged betrayal of public trust, was submitted to the House secretary general at around 6:30 p.m. He said he expects more lawmakers to endorse the complaint today. Those who endorsed the impeachment complaint against Sereno were House Deputy Speaker Gwendolyn Garcia (Cebu), Deputy Speaker Mylene Garcia Albano (Davao City), Deputy Speaker Ferdinand Hernandez (South Cotabato), Deputy Speaker Frederick Abueg (Palawan), Reps. Edgar Sarmiento (Samar), Anthony Bravo (COOP NATCCO partylist), Arnel Ty (LPGMA partylist), Rodito Albano (Isabela), Francisco Matugas III (Surigao del Norte), Aurelio Gonzales (Pampanga), Federico Sandoval (Malabon), Joel Almario (Davao Oriental), Romeo Acop (Antipolo City), Bingbong Crisologo (Quezon City), Pedro Acharon Jr. (South Cotabato), XJ Romualdo (Camiguin), Gil Acosta (Palawan), Ann Hofer (Zamboanga Sibugay), Winnie Castelo (Quezon City), Jericho Nograles (PBA party-list), John Marvin Nieto (Manila), Robert Ace Barbers (Surigao del Norte), Roger Mercado (Southern Leyte), Jennifer Barzaga (Cavite) and Lorna BautistaBandigan (Davao Occidental). Rumors floated that 42 lawmakers would endorse the impeachment case. Gadon said among the main points of the complaint was Sereno’s alleged failure to be honest in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN), tax misdeclarations

25 congressmen endorse Sereno impeachment and unauthorized expenses. He expressed hope that the House led by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez would gather 98 signatures or one-third of the 294 members needed for the complaint to be sent to the Senate for trial. Gadon said it would be up to the House committee on justice chaired by Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali to evaluate the complaint. This is the second impeachment complaint filed against Sereno. Lawmakers have yet to endorse the first impeachment case filed by anti-crime watchdog Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption. It was not known whether the two complaints will be consolidated. Gadon said he would get a copy of Sereno’s SALN from 2010 up to 2016 from the Supreme Court today. Sereno was accused of violating the SALN law by not declaring

at least P16 million in lawyer’s fees that she received when she was still counsel for the Philippine International Air Terminals Company Inc. or Piatco. Sereno’s predecessor, the late former chief justice Renato Corona, was ousted from office for not truthfully declaring his wealth in his SALN. “We also included in the complaint the luxury vehicle,” Gadon said, referring to the P8million worth bullet-proof Toyota Land Cruiser of Sereno. Gadon said former chief justices used to own cars amounting to P1.5 million. Gadon also accused Sereno of corruption over the alleged use of public funds to stay in expensive hotels when attending local and foreign conferences; flying on business or first class with her staff and security; and bringing a huge entourage of lawyers in her official foreign trips.Philstar

Philippines restaurant’s 15-cent burger promotion causes frenzy Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A Phillipines burger chain’s 8th anniversary celebration caused a frenzy as customers rushed into locations in search of cheap burgers. Manila-based Zark’s Burgers offered its first 80 customers a burger for 8 pesos, or 15 cents, to celebrate the restaurant’s 8-year anniversary, but issued an apology after customers stormed the front door. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience experienced by patrons and other m a l l shoppers unintentionally brought about by this celebration that was intended to thank all of you for 8 years of loyal support and patronage,” the restaurant said. Lines began to form outside the restaurants various locations throughout the Philippines as early as 7 a.m. as customers waited for the shops to open at 10 a.m., ABS CBN reported. Once doors opened, hundreds of customers attempted to shove their way into the locations for the heavily discounted burgers. “As I saw the running people and all their screaming, I changed my mind,” Pauline Cabal Estrada told Mashable of the scene. Zark’s burgers has 29 stores throughout the Philippines and offered the promotion at each of its locations. “We at Zark’s Burgers express our deep gratitude for the mammoth response to our P8 for first 80 customers in-store promo to celebrate our 8th anniversary,” Zark’s said. “We would also like to thank all officers, mall managers and security teams for ensuring everyone’s safety.”

Video catches shoplifter hiding 18 liquor bottles in her clothes Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Police in Louisiana released security camera footage of a shoplifter taking 18 bottles of wine and liquor from a store by shoving them in her clothes and purse. The Aug. 18 security camera footage from the Thrifty Liquor Store in Shreveport shows a woman concealing 18 bottles of wine and liquor in her purse, pants and bra before paying for a single bottle of alcohol and leaving the store, KTBS reported. The video, posted to YouTube by the Shreveport-Caddo Crime Stoppers, led to the Shreveport City Marshal’s Office and Louisiana State Probation and Parole Office identifying the woman in the footage as Sekonie Jones, 37. Jones was contacted by investigators and surrendered Thursday at Shreveport City Jail, the Shreveport Times reported. She was arrested on a count of misdemeanor theft. Chief Justice Ma. Google, Apple face off over augmented reality technology SAN FRANCISCO - Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday unveiled tools to make augmented reality apps for mobile devices using the Android operating system, setting up its latest showdown with Apple Inc’s iPhone over next-generation smartphone features. Phone-based augmented reality (AR), in which digital objects are superimposed onto the real world on screen, got a huge boost from the popularity of the Pokémon Go game. The game, launched in the United States in July last year, sent players into city streets, offices, parks and restaurants to search for colorful animated characters. Analysts expected the game to make $3 billion for Apple over two years as gamers buy “PokéCoins” from its app store. Google’s take on the technology will first be available on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Google’s own Pixel phone. The company said in a blog post that it hoped to make the system, called ARCore, available to at least 100 million users, but did not set a date for a broad release. Apple in June announced a similar system called ARKit that it plans to release this fall on “hundreds of millions” of devices. Google and Apple will jockey for the attention of customers and software developers who will build the games, walking guides and other applications that would make AR a compel-

ling feature. Many tech industry leaders envision a future in which eyeglasses, car windshields and other surfaces can overlay digital information on the real world. Google and Microsoft Corp have already experimented with AR glasses. “AR is big and profound,” Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook told investors earlier in August. “And this is one of those huge things that we’ll look back at and marvel on the start of it.” Apple and Google have had to make compromises to bring the technology to market. In Apple’s case, the Cupertino, California-based company decided to make its AR system work with devices capable of running iOS 11, its next-generation operating system due out this fall. This means it will work on phones going back to the iPhone 6s, which have a single camera at the back and standard motion sensors, rather than a dual camera system found on newer models such as the iPhone 7 Plus or special depth-sensing chips in competing phones. That limits the range of images that can be displayed. Google initially aimed to solve this problem with an AR system called Tango that uses a special depth-sensor, but only two phone makers so far support it. With ARCore, Google changed course to work on phones without depth sensors.

sci-tech

But the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem presents challenges. To spread its AR system beyond the Galaxy S8 and Pixel phone, Google will have to

figure out how account for the wide variety of Android phone cameras or require phone makers to use specific parts. Apple, however, is able to

make its system work well because it knows exactly which hardware and software are on the iPhone and calibrates them tightly. Reuters

Hackers post nude Justin Bieber pictures on Selena Gomez’s Instagram HOLLYWOOD (AP) — Selena Gomez is back in control of her Instagram account after someone posted nude photos of her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber. USA Today reports the pictures were posted briefly Monday to Gomez’s 125 million followers, the most of any Instagram user. The account was taken offline, but it was working again moments later with the photos removed. The photos of Bieber first surfaced in 2015. He told Access Hollywood shortly after they became public that he felt “super violated” by their publication. Bieber and Gomez dated off and on for several years before breaking up in 2015. Anne Curtis to give away three free dream weddings MANILA, Philippines — In a recent press conference, Anne Curtis recalled her sweetest moments with fiancé Erwan Heussaff. Of all the places that they have been, the actress and TV host said Paris is her favorite not only because her restaurateur boyfriend is half-French. “I have a lot of memories in Paris with Erwan,” she began. “Just walking hand in hand in park stair as if we’re normal people. Wala lang, ang sweet!” “We just sit down in a café with coffee and long conversations and no one knew who we were… it’s really just an ‘us’ time,” added the star. Though she does not want to reveal her wedding details because she wants to keep it special, she described herself as “super relaxed as a bride” and hopefully, she would like to keep her hair short for the big day because she now feels weird having her long locks back. As a children’s book author, she loves kids, but divulged that she and Erwan would probably hold back having children first after they get married. “I love children! I really, really do. But I don’t think I’m going to have one right away. After getting married, we’d wait for maybe a year so, so we can enjoy muna each other’s company and then travel na kami lang. I have a group of friends who have kids and it really changes eh. Parang when you want to travel, ‘di na pwede ‘yung basta

basta na lang aalis. Or when you book a restaurant, iba ‘pag may baby. So, we will wait for that and just travel more to all the exotic places na gusto naming puntahan.” Although she marks her 20th year in showbiz this year, she does not feel that getting married would make her feel older. “Of course not! You’ve got so many young moms, young brides who got married at the age of 25. So, feeling ko, hindi naman s’ya nakakatanda. In fact, I feel like I’m such a late bloomer na nga. But I think that’s because times have changed. Women have become more career-driven and now have other priorities. During the time of my mom, 18 pa lang kinakasal na sila. Hindi s’ya nakakatanda. It’s just that priorities have changed.” In fact, even after the wedding, she still will not accept mother roles and she plans to continue what she is doing. “My personality is so active and out there… As long as you maintain your body, your appearance, you can still portray any role you think is bagay for you. But I respect din naman the actresses. I will not change much in the industry. It’s only my last name that’s changing.” Indeed, Anne is already looking forward to walking down the aisle toward Erwan. “I’m excited for everything that will come our way, maybe, how we’ll live alone together.”Philstar

Filipino workers critical to MB’s pork industry

few years ago, I received a call from a friend in the Philippines, Congressman Edwin Uy, and he asked if I could arrange for him to visit a modern pig farm in Manitoba. I was happy to do so because I, too, was interested in checking out what a real modern-day pig barn was all about. I was amazed with what I witnessed at the pig farm in Neepawa. Ever since that tour, I have become an advocate for an industry that I really do care about and often talk about. A couple of weeks ago, I was out in Neepawa again. With a population of just over 4,500 people, this beautiful town is about 2 hours west of Winnipeg along Highway 16. The purpose of my trip this time was to take a tour of HyLife and what a great experience it was. HyLife began in 1994 and today it processes over 1.5 million pigs a year out of its Neepawa plant. I think the fastest growing immigrant group in the town is likely the Filipino community. I would not be sur-

f the Marcos family wanted to return the billions they are believed to have amassed in mysterious ways during the 20 years in power of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, they would have already done so. They can start by turning over to the government the priceless paintings of the Old Masters – artwork that only the likes of Bill Gates, the Sultan of Brunei and museums with rich endowments can afford. Instead Imelda Marcos is holding on to the paintings, filing legal challenges without explaining how a senator-turnedpresident and his wife who reportedly used to sleep in the garage of her uncle’s home managed to acquire paintings by Michelangelo, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. Not to mention the king’s ransom in jewelry that the government has managed to seize. The Presidential Commission on Good Government is going after 156 paintings in the Marcoses’ possession that include works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin and Joan Miro. Andres Bautista, when he was PCGG commissioner, said that in a ruling in 2003, the Supreme Court had estimated the legitimate wealth of the Marcoses at only $304,000; anything beyond that is subject to seizure by the government. Filipinos can only hope that if the Marcoses turn over wealth to the Filipino people, it won’t be just $304,000 and a token gold bar or two, with the family getting to keep everything else. This would be like China giving the Philippines two bridges and a few other crumbs in exchange for the West Philippine Sea and its islands and sand bars. The other day, President Duterte, citing an unnamed Marcos spokesman, disclosed that the family had agreed to “open everything” and return accumulated wealth. Apart from the fact that this could constitute an admission that the wealth was illegally amassed, there is the inevitable question of what the Marcoses might get in return. The PCGG places the family’s ill-gotten wealth at $10 billion. This includes the deposits in Swiss banks that now amount to $658 million with interest, which the Swiss government had turned over to the Philippines after the funds were legally declared by both countries to be ill-gotten. The curious thing about this is that the account holders remain unpunished. Anyone responsible for this scale of thievery should be locked up with the key thrown away. Instead, with a token gesture, it looks like those who amassed a mind-boggling amount of ill-gotten wealth might get away permanently with their crime. Ferdinand Marcos, now happily resting in peace in the cemetery for heroes, must be laughing in his grave.Philstar

HIS being a crazy world, it sometimes happens that a tourist, an immigrant, or an OFW (overseas Filipino worker) finds himself subjected to disparaging remarks about his country, ethnicity, or accent. How does he handle it? The subject cropped up again after a Canadian woman yelled at an elderly Filipino couple on a Vancouver train last week to “Go back to the fu****g Philippines” after hearing them, she said, talking in Tagalog too loud. How would/should a Filipino react? It depends on the person and the situation. Many friends said they would answer back if the slur were directed at them, but would just give the offender a menacing look if the words were flung in a general way (“medyo padinig lang”). But a Pinoy’s demeanor would likely be subdued if he had immigration concerns, like if he were a TNT (tago ng tago) in the US. The standard advice to newcomers intending to overstay is for them not to talk too much and to keep out of trouble, avoiding even traffic incidents. This blessed meekness while waiting to inherit the earth is the opposite of the response of the uncle of a Batangueño colleague in California who called in his “barkada” and readied guns after white supremacists harassed his family that had just moved to a largely white neighborhood.

UALA LUMPUR – After it was confirmed yesterday morning that North Korea had fired a missile that landed near the Japanese island of Hokkaido, the big question was how Tokyo would react. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, after all, is a hawk. As of yesterday afternoon, however, the response was cautious, with Japan and treaty ally the United States reportedly discussing sanctions against Pyongyang rather than military action. Japan’s role in regional security, however, is coming under increasingly closer scrutiny amid threats posed by North Korea and China. Also fueling the scrutiny is US President Donald Trump’s “America first” policy, which could bode a weakening of US influence and security involvement in Asia. But the policy remains vague, and Trump’s military commanders have reassured regional allies that the US will maintain its presence in the region. Trump’s “fire and fury” warning to Pyongyang was also seen as a step away from isolationism. Still, the volatility of Trump’s policies is causing uncertainty in Asia. Can another country step up to the plate and play a prominent security role? Specifically, is Japan prepared to fill in the void, if one is created by Trump’s America? At the third Japan-ASEAN Media Forum held in this Malaysian capital over the weekend, this question kept popping up. For Asia, can Japan be a more reliable and responsible partner, and an alternative to rivals America and China? The Japanese participants in

Even if Abe has expressed openness to increasing defense spending and letting the Japanese military function as a “normal” armed force, their economy – despite being the world’s third largest – may not be able to sustain it. Any shift in the role of the Japanese armed forces may also require an amendment of their unique pacifist constitution, and ordinary citizens seem cool to the idea. Despite being overtaken by China as the second largest economy and tepid growth, Japan remains prosperous, with one of the world’s highest per capita GDP. The Japanese can afford to sit back and enjoy their prosperity, to literally stop and smell the flowers. Japan is itself also embroiled in a maritime dispute with China, in which Tokyo has the upper hand, occupying islands in the East China Sea with US support.

Another obstacle is lingering distrust of the Japanese in countries such as South Korea, where people have long memories and the older generation in particular cannot forget Japanese wartime atrocities. Among younger Asians, however, post-war Japan has a generally benign image. It is seen as a major source of development assistance and job-generating investments, a survivor of a nuclear holocaust, pacifist and non-aggressive (except in waters it shares with China). Japan has captivated the world with its healthy cuisine, its technology and video games, its distinctive art and even manga comics and anime. Best of all, for countries like the Philippines, Japan has not been building artificial islands and militarizing them in waters that can never be considered part of its 200-mile exclusive economic zone. A media participant asked if China is capable of moral and responsible leadership. As Japanese journalists at the forum stressed, however, their country is not trying to contain China. In fact, like the United States, Japan has deep economic and other ties with China. Japanese businessmen, forum participants were told, were in fact worried about being left out of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. ***

SKETCHES Tokyo’s reluctance to act in the face of aggressive Chinese activities in the South China Sea, however, could mean ceding regional leadership to Beijing. In the early 1950s when Japan’s per capita GDP was just $108, the country propounded a so-called flying geese paradigm, in which a prosperous Japan would pull the rest of the region in its wake. Among the geese following the lead goose was China. The past three decades, however, has seen China flying ahead of the rest of the formation and now threatening to cast aside the lead goose. As journalists at the forum (not from the Philippines) stressed to the Japanese participants, it would be in Japan’s self-interest to hold on to that lead. A media participant noted that others in the formation, including the Philippines, have three options: they can oppose or resist China’s growing influence, work out an entente with Beijing, or be pragmatic and join the Chinese sphere of influence.

Because of the uncertainty over Trump’s policies, aligning with China is becoming more attractive for certain countries. One journalist at the forum, however, observed that Trump is not an isolationist but a unilateralist: it’s my way or the highway. The journalist noted that US defense spending has in fact gone up under Trump. He has committed to continue US military involvement in Afghanistan. And he has matched his “fire and fury” rhetoric against North Korean provocation with economic sanctions. The journalist believes Beijing is bound to feel the heat from Trump’s Washington. In our little corner of the planet, the ideal situation is for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to police its own region and tell all foreign devils to stay out. But we know the reality: as the US becomes a reluctant global cop, China has succeeded in dividing and ruling ASEAN. President Duterte raised a valid point, when pressed about why he was taking his time raising with his Chinese friends the ruling of the UN arbitral court, which favored the Philippines and invalidated Beijing’s entire nine-dash-line claim over the South China Sea: why didn’t the US do anything to stop China’s island building? Probably because the US, whose economy is inextricably linked with China, was waiting for the arbitral court ruling – and a specific request from the winner for help in ensuring compliance by all parties – before it would act. 

Pinoys abroad hit by racist remarks Federico D. Pascual Jr.

POSTSCRIPT When the KKK-type gang tried to set afire a cross in his yard one evening, the “barkada” rushed out, firing over the heads of the scampering intruders. My friend’s uncle was never molested again, but he relocated after six months. Some old-timers in the San Francisco Bay Area have told us that Caucasians usually do not want to tangle with Asians, especially Vietnamese, and that they are deathly scared of bladed weapons. We never bothered to verify this, but are ready to believe it. We got to talking about racist slurs, not only because of the big number of displaced persons seeking refuge and of some likely havens, such as the US, putting up isolationist walls, but also because of that incident in Vancouver where a Filipino couple was insulted. • ‘Go back to the fu****g Philippines’ AS REPORTED in a HuffPost story by David Moye, the couple was told by a white Canadian woman to get off the city’s SkyTrain and go back to where they came from. The Filipinos

‘Go back to the fu****g Philippines’ and their tormentor were not identified in the news. The story was accompanied by a video taken by Ashley Klassen, who posted it on Facebook and described the incident as “probably the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. Unfiltered Vancouver racism.” The woman who yelled at the Filipinos was visibly somewhat shocked when other passengers reacted and told her to herself get off. She insisted that she shouted at them because they were speaking Tagalog rather too loud. The man had apologized, explaining that that was how they normally talked in the Philippines. The woman retorted angrily, “I was born and raised right here,” and added, “Go back to the fu****g Philippines!” A Filipino Canadian, Paula Correa, also posted on social media a video of the incident, because, according to her, she wanted her fellow Canadians to see what happened. She told local radio station CKWX: “Social media provides an illusion that these things happen in other places, in other countries – in the USA, for example. But it can happen in the very place we call our home and it does happen, and it did happen.” In the video, some passengers were seen coming to the

couple’s defense, including a teenager who told the woman yelling at them, “Get the f**k off the train! You’re racist!” “I am not racist,” the woman replied. “I asked them to talk a little lower.” She got off before police officers, who were called, arrived. She was later tagged as a 75-year-old “known to police for documented anger-related issues in the past.” Filipinos are the third largest subset of Asian immigrants in Canada after the Indians and Chinese. One of the fastest growing groups, they number around 663,000. Btw, Philippine Airlines flies the ManilaVancouver-New York route four days (M-W-F-Sa) a week. • Is Pinoy chatter annoying at times? NOTE that the woman said the couple was talking in Tagalog too loud. She could have been genuinely annoyed, although that was not an excuse for yelling racial remarks at them. There may be no law fixing the decibel level at which a person should converse, but a good rule to follow is to be considerate when talking in a crowded closed area, especially with people of mixed ethnicity. In 2012, a group of 69 Filipino nurses won a $975,000 settlement against the Delano

Regional Medical Center near Bakersfield, California, whose officials allegedly mocked their accent and ordered them to speak only English – and not their native language – in the premises. The lawsuit alleged violations of the Civil Rights Act. Hospital officials insisted they did nothing wrong, but settled the suit after two years only because that made financial sense. The nurses complained that they suffered “constant harassment and humiliation” when they spoke, or talked with family members on the phone. They were allegedly banned from speaking Tagalog and other dialects in break rooms, hallways and the cafeteria. Elnora Cayme, who worked at the hospital for more than 27 years, said: “They were always telling us, ‘Ssshhh. English only. English only.’ I felt embarrassed, ashamed… I was so angry we were being followed by housekeepers and security guards.” Wilma Lamug, employed at the hospital for 10 years, said: “Sometimes, we were speaking English, but due to our accent and diction, they thought we were speaking something else.” The hospital said its policy while providing healthcare was to use either English or the patient’s preferred language – with the goal of protecting patients.Philstar

MANILA -- “Everything is real,” said Julia Barretto on her romantic ties with Joshua Garcia, her leading man in the upcoming film “Love You to the Stars and Back.” On the Monday episode of “Tonight With Boy Abunda,” Barretto said their honest and genuine feelings for each other make it easier for their tandem to emit a natural chemistry that strikes their fans. “It’s hard to fake. It’s hard to pretend. ‘Yon ang hindi ko kayang gawin,” she quipped. While it’s no longer a secret that Garcia is courting her, Barretto said she has also given him “exclusive rights” to date her, which means she is no longer available to entertain other suitors. “If you feel something for the person already, siyemp r e , y o u give the person also the

What to admire about Aegis

MANILA, Philippines - A record label executive, speaking before professional songwriters, recently pointed out that songs with hugot lines easily connect with sentimental Filipinos. That must be halfway the truth in assessing the lofty status rock ballad band Aegis enjoys. Its songs’ lyrics surely do hit deep. And the words get through to the everyday Pinoy who falls in love or gets hurt in the process of embracing romance. Such words combined with lonely melodies that simply cut through, with no pretensions of sounding artsy, give the band the kind of material that fits basic power ballad arrangement. It is a formulaic concoction every critic may call safe or accuse of not exploring the gadgetry of modern music. Yet, it works for Filipino listeners. Besides, Aegis’ repertoire of originals is for people so in touch with their emotions, those affected or who pretend not to be affected by, as we know it, hugot lines. “We’re glad that people don’t forget us. Sa US tour namin, sobra ang pagtanggap nila at puno lahat ang 15 shows namin,” said Juliet Sunot, one of the band’s three singers and certainly a major piece of the band for her high-pitched vocals. There’s humility in her tone, almost as if she doesn’t know she possesses that superior vocal gift spelling the difference. So true, the powerful vocals that come off the band set them apart from most

mainstream group acts. Most female voices in the music scene either sing sexy or soft, smooth-operators so to speak. Many of them sound too girlish, or always trying to portray themselves as pretty-looking damsels in distress. The singers in Aegis would have none of that. They don’t need to be taken as hot, lonely women who want to be saved by boys-next-door or rich widowers from the upper floors. They’re sisters and they can really sing, in over-the-top harmonies and hold-your-breath pitches. They’re letting it all out, weeping and wailing. They simply sound wistful, ultimately wonderful. Juliet shared, referring to how they take care of their golden voices, “We avoid cold drinks — maligamgam lang — and sweets. Getting sleep is important.” Backing up Juliet and her sisters Mercy and Ken are keyboardist Stella Pabico, guitarist Rey Abenoja, bass player Rowena Adriano and drummer Vilma Goloviogo. Why there’s a thorn among the roses can be somehow traced to Rey’s surname. The band’s classics were written by one Celso Abenoja. Another thing to admire about Aegis is that they stick to the group’s brand. The Sunot sisters could have easily gone into a trio, or Juliet may have found a way to go solo. But they have kept themselves together under the Aegis name. Fortune goes to the ones who keep it together. And for them that luck came in the

form of a musical called Rak of Aegis that became a breakaway hit when launched in local theater stage in 2014, a decade and a half since Aegis entered the public consciousness. That the band members have a string of timeless hit songs and a name that sounds like “ages,” and there’s Rock of Ages, with Tom Cruise starring in a film version of it, is the whole universe conspiring? Isay Alvarez hit the right note when she said that it’s difficult to sing Aegis songs and that in reality, most people are not always heartbroken in the name of romantic love. But then the catch is, as she noted, Aegis

music is very Pinoy. “Next year, it would be our 20th year,” Juliet happily reminded. Longevity is its success. Blowing kisses to the magic of second-wind gives more meaning to such a long run. Tonight at 8, Aegis, a big draw of an act by Alpha Music, is bound to fill up the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila for a concert dubbed Aegis Na Aegis: A Story of Us. The show is under the direction of Lambert de Jesus and co-presented by RWM in cooperation with Ultimate Shows, Inc. Last Wednesday, the same

venue became the site of a benefit concert called Kaya Natin ’To, featuring a star-studded list of concert and stage play acts, including folk-acoustic artist Noel Cabangon, whose digitally released anthem of the same title aims to donate download fees to children of RWM Foundation. What a way to wrap it up with the hottest classic act of today on board, expected to sing Luha, Halik, Sinta and BasangBasa Sa Ulan. Often we hear these songs sung on videokes by countless wannabes. It’s sure a different story to hear these songs in a concert venue with Aegis.-By Yugel Losorata

Liza Soberano in ‘Darna’? Tony Labrusca recently confessed that he finds Liza Soberano very beautiful. “They were asking me who my crush was in showbiz, I was telling them that I wouldn’t really say I have a crush but they really wanted to know who I found was pretty so I told them that I found Liza very pretty,” he said in an interview with PUSH. Asked if he is open to becoming Liza’s leading man in the upcoming Darna movie, he replied, “For Liza in terms of Darna, I mean I don’t know. I’m focused on La Luna Sangre right now. I feel I should focus more on Jake (his role in the series) but for whoever they cast as her leading man, I mean, I hope they have fun, I’m sure it’s going to be great,” he said. Besides his stint on La Luna Sangre, Tony recently released a new single called “Tanging Ikaw”. He relayed that the story behind the song is about two best friends. “I thought of an idea about maybe just like two friends that became really close in an unconventional way and then like halfway through their friendship they guy realizes he has feelings for the girl so it’s just kind of like that playful type of idea. It just felt that a lot of people in the Philippines might relate to it and so I went

with that something that is a little bit more fun, youthful and realistic and what can happen when two people are best friends,” he shared. How does he find time to balance acting and music? “Well I was actually working on my single before I was cast in La Luna Sangre. I already finished the lyrics for that while we are in La Luna Sangre. It was just all about finding time to record and finding time to promote like right now and whenever there is free time I just promote my single,” he replied. Tony relayed that he will be releasing more singles soon. When it comes to creating an album, he shared that he will not be making one yet. “Maybe [I will release] another single in a few months but we really wanted to just play around with just a song and just create something for fun and that’s why we decided we would just be focused on releasing singles for now. It really takes a lot of time to invest in an album. I would eventually do that one day but I mean for me it’s just discovering myself as artist. Whether, it’s a hit or a miss single, I feel like you could never go wrong,” he stated. push. abs-cbn.com

Korean star Ricky Kim on how he found love in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — When the news broke that Korean actor Ricky Kim and theater actress Ryu Seung Joo would tie the knot in 2009, showbiz insiders thought it would be a career suicide. But the Korean-American actor believed otherwise. “In Korea, most Korean stars usually hide the fact that they have wives and children. Dating scandals are big issues. It’s a golden rule. But it’s not mine. What I did was the opposite. I married young. I had kids. I don’t regret it. I always believe in being real and transparent,” said the Korean actor in an interview with Philstar. com during the grand opening of Gen Korean BBQ Restaurant in SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. When he first came to Korea, pursuing a career in the entertainment industry was not in his immediate plan. He came to volunteer and teach English for a while, before he left to travel around the world. Four months later, he returned to his mother’s home country and decided to try his luck in Korean entertainment. He debuted in a four-episode TV series “Miracle,” fol-

lowed by his stint in the hit show “On Air,” where he attracted attention for is supporting role. He got his first leading role for the romantic comedy film “My Darling FBI.” His other acting projects included 2009 Korean staging of the musical “Dreamgirls” and period medical drama “Jejungwon.” In 2009, he showed his athleti-

cism in the sports-reality show “Let’s Go Dream Team! Season 2.” He proved he has a knack for reality TV and appeared in several seasons of “Law of the Jungle,” a travel-reality show where the celebrity cast go to exotic locations and are left to survive in nature. It was in 2010 where he publicized his marriage on national TV, and opened up his life by inviting his then-pregnant wife to cheer on him in “Let’s Go Dream Team.” Ricky shared that he first met his wife while doing volunteer work with Compassion, an international non-government organization, in the Philippines back in 2007. Two years later, the couple got married. After two years, their first child, Tae-rin (also known as Taylor) was born. They had another child, Tae-oh (Asher William) in 2013. Their youngest child, Tae-ra (Ellysen Victoria) was born in 2015. From 2014 to 2016, the TaeTae Family - as they are fondly called by the fans - gave a peek of their domestic life in “Oh, My

Baby,” a Korean variety show that documents the family life of Korean celebrities and their young children. With the funny antics of the children, they have won the hearts of viewers globally. Seeing the big crowd that have gathered for their fan meeting, billed “Daddy’s Day Out: Ricky Kim and TaeTae Family in Manila,” proved Ricky made the right decision. It has been a year since the family-oriented reality TV show stopped airing, but the popularity of the TaeTae Family is still so strong that there has been clamor to see them again, paving the way for fan meet events in Singapore, Thailand, and recently in the Philippines. Marriage and fatherhood have indeed become plus points for Ricky. “Fatherhood has made me more responsible, more patient, and more adventurous. It made life better. I would always choose life over work. Everyday is one day, and you have to be happy. You have to fight for happiness. You have to try hard. It is not easy.”Philstar

NBA: Celtics, Cavs finalize blockbuster trade - reports The Boston Celtics agreed to send the Cleveland Cavaliers a 2020 second-round draft pick via the Miami Heat to complete the blockbuster trade that sent four-time All-Star guard Kyrie Irving to the Celtics, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday. The Cavaliers sought additional compensation for the deal that brought Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and an unprotected 2018 first-round draft pick via the Brooklyn Nets to Cleveland because of Thomas’ hip injury. The Celtics resisted the Cavs’ attempt to get another first-round pick or a young star to compensate Cleveland for its reluctance to sign-off on Thomas’ injury, which Boston said it was transparent about. Cleveland finally agreed to complete the deal late Wednesday night with the second-round pick.

Both teams risked walking away from the deal that had been announced on August 22. The options included voiding the trade completely or renegotiating. The Cavaliers felt the Celtics were not completely forthcoming about the length of rehabilitation facing Thomas, who suffered the hip injury in March. The Celtics claimed they provided the necessary information to the Cavs. “There’s never been an indication that I wouldn’t be back, and there’s never been an indication that this is something messing up my career,” Thomas told ESPN on Tuesday. “Maybe I am not going to be back as soon this season as everyone wants me to be, but I’m going to be back, and I’m going to be the same player again. No doctor has told me anything different than that.”The Sports Xchange via Reuters

Paulie Malignaggi challenges Conor McGregor to winner-take-all fight If Conor McGregor is looking to lace up a pair of boxing gloves again, Paulie Malignaggi is more than willing to come out of retirement and step up to the challenge. The retired former world champion turned Showtime analyst made headlines after quitting as Conor McGregor’s sparring partner ahead of the Irishman’s fight with Floyd Mayweather, which McGregor lost by 10th round TKO. The dispute between the two parties started over leaked sparring photos that Malignaggi suggested were released to make him look bad. Since then, the two have fired verbal jabs in the media and had a brief altercation during the Mayweather-McGregor fight week.

But now that the megafight is over, the talk has shifted to what McGregor will do next. And Malignaggi is open to a boxing match, if that’s what McGregor wants to do. “I think the fans want it and I think its a very sellable fight,” Malignaggi said, citing their already established feud. “How bad does he want it? I’ll tell you this, he has most of the public perception that he got the better of me in sparring and he has them believing in that [expletive] knockdown. But we knows what happens if he fights me. He knows he sparred with me when I was only at 35-40 percent because I was retired and he knows the trouble he had with me.” A date that has been loosely con-

nected to the fight is March 17, 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on St. Patrick’s Day. Obviously, with Malignaggi from nearby Bensonhurst and the large Irish contingency, this would likely be a huge fight. But there are many hurdles that need to be overcome in order to make that fight a reality including McGregor’s status with the UFC. But if there’s a way Malignaggi can lure McGregor into the bout, he’ll certainly put it out there. “I’m all about it, man. I’ll make it winner-takes-all,” Malignaggi said. I’m willing to risk fighting him for free just to punch him in the mouth again and again and again. That’s how confident I am they can’t beat me.”-Andreas Hale

MANILA, Philippines — Ginebra has traded high-flying guard Chris Ellis to Blackwater for Art Dela Cruz. The deal is part of a two-on-two trade that will also send Dave Marcelo to the Elite in exchange for Raymond Aguilar. “Air Force Ellis” was drafted by the Gin Kings in 2012. He is averaging 3.5 points, 3.5 boards and 1.0 assist this conference. Dela Cruz, meanwhile, was picked ninth overall by Blackwater in the 2015 draft. The San Beda standout average 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in his stay with the Elite. A source told The Manila Bulletin’s Dennis Principe that the deal was a smooth one for both teams. “Ok na, madali naman nag-agree yung teams. I guess they need to let go of those players para lumabas din laro nila. Both teams believe the destination of all players involve will present a new and challenging environment for all of them,” Principe quoted the source as saying.Philstar

Buying new clothes was the second top reply, up 9 points to 33 percent, followed by holidays or vacations which increased 3 points to 30 percent, Nielsen said. Twenty-nine percent said they would invest in stocks while 27 percent said they would spend on home improvements, the research firm said. “Consumers with a positive outlook about their finances, job prospects, and spending intentions tend to have an open mindset towards indulgences such as clothes and travel,” said Nielsen Philippines managing director Stuart Jamieson. The same Nielsen study showed that Filipinos are the world’s most confident consumers, in another reflection of robust economic growth. Asked about their concerns, 30 percent cited job security, followed by health concerns with 23 percent. Nielsen said terrorism was the third top concern without saying how many of the respondents cited it. “While previously aware of the terrorism on a global level, the Marawi siege brought the threat of terrorism closer to the minds of Filipino consumers,” Jamieson said.-news.abs-cbn.com

Manitoba produces over 3 million pigs a year that is close to three times our population. Most of the pork produced in Manitoba is exported to countries like the USA, Japan, China and Russia. These jobs contribute to our province’s economic well-being in a very tangible way. The direct jobs in this industry remind me in many ways of another industry that was at one time critical to our Province’s growth, the garment industry. Like the pork industry, the garment industry was only able to prosper at the time because of immigrant workers, a majority of whom came from the Philippines. I had a great trip that day to a wonderful community in rural Manitoba and like so many other rural communities not only in Manitoba but throughout Canada, we are seeing a fast growing Filipino populace that I love and care about profoundly.

FOR VIOLATING LTFRB ORDER:

Uber pays

P190-million

fine business

Uber Systems Inc. on Tuesday officially settled the P190-million fine imposed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on the Transport Network Company (TNC) for violating a ban on accepting new drivers. The deal was for Uber to settle the fine and LTFRB will lift the one-month suspension order it issued agains Uber on August 14. Uber lawyers Roberto Ramiro and Ane Mascenon from Puyat-Jacinto-Santos Law Office paid the fine at the LTFRB office in Quezon City around 1 p.m. The lawyers declined to comment. “We’re not authorized to give any statement,” Ramiro said. In a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the LTFRB said it lifted the one-month suspension. LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada told reporters suspension is “hereby lifted and set aside.” In a separate statement, Uber said it will resume operations. “We have complied with the requirements outlined by the LTFRB, and are grateful for the opportunity to serve the Philippines again. Our operations will resume at 5:00pm,” the company said. On Friday, the LTFRB said it would grant Uber’s request to have the one-month suspension lifted if the TNC would pay a P190-million fine. In an order dated August 25, the board said the fine will be remitted to the national treasury once Uber has paid for it. Apart from the fine, Uber was ordered to remit financial assistance to its drivers P19.9 million a day until its operation is restored. “Proof of compliance is likewise imposed, the same to be evidenced by a certification from the respondent’s depository bank,” the LTFRB added. LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada on Saturday clarified the basis for imposing a P190-million million was the average daily income of Uber estimated at P7 million to P10 million. “Ang remaining days ng suspension is 19 days. Kaya ‘yung P10 million times 19 days na naiwan ... That’s how we arrived with the amount of 190,” Lizada said. — VDS/ ALG, GMA News

South Korea threatens to ‘exterminate’ Kim Jong-un after North Korea missile test over Japan

SOUTH Korea has threatened to “exterminate” Kim Jong-un as tensions across East Asia heightened after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the skies of Japan. Japanese officials said the missile took off from Pyongyang and flew above the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido before landing in the Pacific Ocean. There was no damage to ships or anything else reported, while Japan’s NHK TV said the missile separated into three parts.

Japanese response

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the launch, telling reporters: “We will do our utmost to protect people’s lives. “This reckless act of launching a missile that flies over our country is an unprecedented, serious and important threat.” Residents on Hokkaido were warned of a possible missile launch by a mobile phone message which told people to seek shelter in a “sturdy building or basement”.

South Korea’s response

South Korea responded in the hours after the missile test by launching four F-15 fighter jets and dropping eight MK-84 bombs against a simulated target at the Pilsung training range on the border of the two countries and near the demilitarised zone. Robert Kelly, associate professor at Pusan National University’s Department of Political Science, told CNN: “North Koreans can’t just shoot missiles over people’s countries, there has to be some response. “It looks somewhat escalatory, it’s got to be tough, to send a signal, but they don’t want to be too tough because no one wants to get into a war.” According to the Reuters news agency, South Korean Colonel Lee Kuk-No warned: “If North Korea threatens the security of the South Korean people and the South Korea-U.S. alliance with their nuclear weapons and missiles, our air forces will exterminate the leadership of North Korea with our strong strike capabilities.”-Andy Wells,Yahoo News UK

Zombies, romance and revenge drive record ‘Game of Thrones’ ratings

LOS ANGELES - A zombie dragon, an illicit romance and satisfying revenge helped drive the season finale of “Game of Thrones” to a viewership high, HBO said Monday, as the seventh season drew record ratings. A total of 12.1 million viewers watched Sunday’s seventh season finale, titled “The Dragon and the Wolf,” up 36 percent from the 8.9 million viewers who watched the season six finale. Viewership from replays and streams on HBO’s on-demand apps boosted the overall Sunday ratings to 16.5 million viewers. The seventh and penultimate season of Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” drew an overall 30.8 million viewers, up nearly 8 million viewers from last season and cementing it as the mostwatched show on Time Warner Inc’s premium cable network HBO. The record ratings came after hackers stole data and content from HBO and leaked it online, including scripts and unaired episodes of “Game of Thrones.” The seventh season saw the show’s lead characters head towards a great battle over the Iron Throne reigning

over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, while a zombie army of White Walkers, led by the undead Night King, march south and threaten mankind’s destruction. Characters Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen finally came together to join forces against the White Walkers, the remaining Stark children reunite at their home in Winterfell and enact a satisfying revenge against master manipulator Petyr Baelish. The Lannister siblings also reunite in King’s Landing in a tense meeting that puts their family ties to the test. Medieval fantasy “Game of Thrones,” based on George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” books, has won numerous Emmy awards including best drama series last year. It is not eligible for this year’s Emmy awards due to its summer premiere after production was pushed back to capture more winter landscapes for the storyline, but it will be back on the roster for next year’s Emmy awards. Ahead of the show’s final eighth season next year, a series of spin-offs is being developed. Reuters
