JongEDITORIAL! oleh : Danny Wicaksono

Hari-hari belakangan ini kita berduka. Lagi. Semua seperti terus berulang. Bencana demi bencana datang berganti, menyilih tanpa henti.

3D Batik

-batik beyond fabricby. Noviardi Prasetya

Batik textile is a familiar symbol of traditional Indonesian culture. It is produced by a time consuming, manual, process that seals parts of the fabric in a wax pattern to repel dye. After dyeing, boiling removes the wax to leave its dyed pattern negative. Layer by layer this process is repeated until the intricate batik pattern is created. This unique batik process also known as ‘wax-resist’ technique. The pattern on the cloth has special meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe; each pattern has special meaning and messages, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, object, folklore or people. ‘3D batik’ attempts to explore the essence of the traditional batik process and extend it into the three-dimensional realm, celebrating its cultural meaning in a 21st century idiom. Three-dimensional casts of traditional Indonesian objects (in this case the oil lamp) are made in wax and placed into a single block mould that is then filled with resin. The set resin cast is cut to reveal an array of different sections through the wax forms contained within. Finally the wax is melted out to reveal the part-voids of the original objects. ‘3D batik’ creates a set of vases that are developed in the same spirit as the textile and extends a cultural tradition and identity beyond the familiarity of its limitations.

By hacking ‘DYEING’ process with ‘RESIN CAST’ process it is posible to create solid object from the same principle with the original batik process.

15

The process always have the element of surprise, because you will never know what will you going to get when you cut them. The heat from the resin cast will melt certain wax then traped inside of the resin, that leaves the random pattern on the object. But this unpredictable factor makes the process more interesting and it will always create unique object.

New site, New myth. by : Rafael Arsono Architectural web-magazine is an internet-based architectural publication which has grown exponentially over the past ten years. The web, as an instrument of releasing disruptive force, has revolutionized the means of production from metal-plates to a desktop which is a drastic liberating shift in techniques. Where a magazine one required the resources of an institution and sizeable staff in order to operate, now anyone with an opinion and few thousand dollars can publish. If some printed magazines need decades of consistent publications to gain reputations, web-magazines gain popularity on a global scale through updated information just within a few months. In consequence of this architectural web-magazines’ phenomenon explosions, architecture opens to wider audience more than ever before. How does this condition affecting architecture? Will the web-magazines replace the printed magazine? This research builds on those kinds of curiosity. The immediacy, the speed and the uncontrollable proliferation of the new; new sites, new images, updated information, makes the object of this research is hardly circumscribed, almost elusive, expanding and changing at all times.Â

jongArsitek! E di si 3. 4, 2 0 1 0 | d e s a in m e n g in s p ir a s i

Thus, this research is based on the result of a daily observation of the internet galaxy lasted in six months. As an attempt, major categories are therefore made to filter the quality of the websites. The first category is to select web-magazines which are ‘transparent’ in terms of clearly mentioning the editors and or the authors. The second category is to group the web-magazines into four families based on the format which are web-magazines born as an extension of existing printed magazines, web-based architectural news, personal blogs and a network dedicated to architecture issue. Each family is aiming to a different target and specific means. However, the internet engine’s flexible system allows a web-magazine to overlap between each family, which then can be called ‘hybrid’. The first two families are generally focused on the publication of the latest architectural trend. The personal blogs are a sort of diary with broader themes from current tendencies to future perspectives. The architectural networks are the platforms for discussion, information and knowledge transfer between different subjects such as architects, suppliers and clients. As a consequence of the information technology, publisher can publish anything freely from anywhere at any time. Moreover, there is a big tendency that web-magazines focus more on the most-recent architectural projects or happenings, especially towards the archi-star centric coverage. Wherever they completed a new building, then a simultaneous condition will be happened. Several web-magazines (and printed-magazines) report and publish the same news of the same projects, with the same images from the same photographers. In this booming situation of a web-media where ‘look’ becomes the selling point, feeling and essence are then brushed off. Rarely can we find a type of archival website dedicated to architectural documentation. Today, architecture is treated merely as immediate information. The editors have no time for reflection, for the development of any form of criticism and architecture can lose its content as a thoughtful and rooted built-environment. Thus, without a clear foundation of contemporary architectural position, web-magazines are responsible to give the impression of an infinite variety of possibilities in architecture which resulting a generic anonymous global landscape. The synthesis chapter finalizes the research by giving a future perspective of web-magazines as a result of the state of today’s architectural web-magazines. New tools such as I-Pad change the way people accessing information. The way web-magazines determine disciplinary discourses and put people in a direct connection has made architecture (and the related themes) more lively and entertaining than before. However, architecture is a cultural operation which is done through a gradual process of researches conducted from many thoughtful experiments by many generations of architects. Although there are possibilities to move most of the magazine features to the web, conventional architectural magazine will continue to exist in their role as thoughtful contemplations and transmission of knowledge. At one point, even there will be a peak of boredom in the internet media which makes people to look back to magazine. This is the state of today’s architectural web-magazine. Milan, 3rd July 2010

_Center of Discussion

Intense number of webmagazine will grow in various topics and point of views, enrich the horizon of architecture, stimulate new curiosity. architecture will be discussed in as many point of view as architecture can be related than ever before. The web-magazines will create genre, and hence, they will attract fans.

Most of web-magazine will open their own blogs to have place to express free opinion (out of the editorial review) and direct feedback. Therefore the blogs will feature lively discussion between readers and the bloggers. The diversity of its topics, made blog important to link between architecture as information and reflection.

_Affiliation

Printed Publication

There will be possibilities of merger between couple different format of webmagazine. For example Blogs can offer objective reviews while it get new topics, while architectural network can offer updated projects.

_More Even _Immediacy

Generally from the types of the updates, there are only two kinds: Immediacy and Reflection. Immediacy means news website or only focus in current events. This kind of web-magazine will be the one who increase the most. it uses images as main attraction. This kind of web-magazine is very useful for daily updater. However, this immediacy put architecture as information. The nature of the news is updating and keep changing every moment, the writer has no time for reflection.

_Reflection

Dedicated to architectural documentation. The web-magazine does not change too often, but provides reliable information, from particular era, architects, or issues. Creating a sort of digital library. Due to organization and bureaucracy of the documents, this kind of webmagazine usually supported by private foundation or academic institution. The number are far less than the news website.

Panggung Opera Tan Malak

26

Perancang Panggung: Danny Wicaksono Pengarah Teknis: Pak Clink Pelaksana Teknis: Lik War
