RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Throughout my time on the course, the majority of my research has all been collected from secondary sources, often while sat behind a computer or while flicking through the pages of a book. My research methodology is based around breaking this routine and pushing myself to collect information and data from primary sources. The research methodology I created is based on gonzo journalism, a style of research and writing in which the journalist immerses himself within the culture he is reviewing. Essentially freeing himself of the

constraints of objectivity common to researchers and journalists studying a subject from an outside perspective. Furthermore, as an additional aspect of my methodology I want to explore the collected information visually, working in a sketchbook to create hands on explorations of content to create innovative visual outcomes that can be adapted into design outcomes.

SUSTAINABILITY A definitive part of my design practice has always been sustainability, therefore when creating the sketchbook in which I will record and explore my primary observations I decided to do so as sustainably as possible. The pages of the book are an amalgamation of collected papers salvaged from bins around university, whereas the grey cover is an offprint saved from a previous project.

Subject

ABIGAYLE LIBBERTON The focus of the research methodology is Abigayle Libberton, a photography student who recently approached me asking if I could design and create her personal branding. All research and visual explorations will explore aspects of her identity and practice, ultimately combing to inform the direction of her personal branding project.

Primary Research

Brief 08 - Design Publication

PRIMARY RESEARCH Primary research was collected using a combination of methods such as unstructured interviews, observational notes and analysis of Abigayles work, evidence of which can be seen in the images of my research sketchbook above.

Visual Explorations

Brief 08 - Design Publication

VISUAL EXPLORATIONS A definitive part of the project are the product images, as they will form the primary visual element the viewer will interact with when reviewing the look book and promotional material. Not only do the images form the visual representation of the product, they also link directly to the 70’s inspired colour scheme defined in the design decisions blog post.

Publication Packaging

PUBLICATION PACKAGING To form a visual representation of the minimal direction Abigayle’s brand identity took I decided to create a clean white box to present the tattered, experimental design publication in, forming a direct representation of the design journey boh projects took.
