Brief

BACKGROUND

BRIEF

Secret 7” is and annual design competition that combining some of the best musical and artistic talent the world has to offer. Each year, the event select single tracks from some of the best known musicians in the world, subsequently tasking creatives with the challenge of creating a visual interpretation of the song.

Choose one of the seven tracks available on the Secret7” website and create an artistic interpretation of the song.

The winning designs are then exhibited in London and eventually sold, with all the proceeds made going to a selected charitable cause.

A NIGHT ON THE TILES

CONCEPT

AMNESIA

Secondary research lead me to an interview with Karl Hyde, the vocalist from Underworld, discussing his inspirations and concepts behind the song. When writing the lyrics Hyde routinely took a note book and camera with him to document the drunken shenanigans occurring on London’s Soho streets. The lyrics of the song aim to recreate the madness Hyde regularly encountered, using layered vocals to recreate the frangmented way in which a drunk person perceives the nights events.

The concept for my response will play heavily on the layered lyrical method used by hyde in the song, aiming to recreate the fragmented memory of a drunk person through layered illustrations that become more obsure as they accumulate on top of each other.

A common side effect of drinking far too much alcohol is a complete loss of memory of the prior night’s events. By building up illustrations repeatedly, the additive colour will eventually form a complete black tone, almost replication the effect of amnesia experienced by people who have drunk too much.

DEVELOPMENT

ILLUSTRATIONS A range of simple illustration were created for the cover of the sleeve, portraying items commonly encountered on a heavy night out on the tiles. The flat nature of the illustrations has been purposely applied to allow them to build up in layers and create the desired visual effect.

PRINTED SLEEVE The printed outcome features illustrations that overlay to create opacity, but also remove, to create interesting tones and further distort the illustrations. Overall, I feel the desired effect was achieved as the layered outcome needs to be carefully studied before the individual elements start to reveal themselves.
