Seeker Office: 327 2nd Street East - Come Visit Us!

For Treasure hunters I love finding buried treasures. And to me, Good Friday is the kick off of treasure hunting season. For three years now, I have been clerking the online portion of the Annual Good Friday Auction that Theresa Taylor puts together. Taking place at the Ramada Inn this year, the event looks better than promising.

Theresa is an Auctioneer Extraordinaire. If you haven't been to one of her auctions before, make sure to visit this time around. Theresa makes auction day an exciting, entertaining event that will see you burst with anticipation. There is nothing quite like it. Winning the coveted prize will make you light up like a Christmas Tree. A few years ago, for $100, I picked up a massive 1840's dining room table that belonged to the Purcell Family Estate. It now stands proudly in my dining room, alongside my 1800's vaisellier, reminding me every day of the history before me. I love antiques.

If you visit Theresa's website at http://theresataylor.com, you will see everything that is being sold on the day of the auction. If you can't attend in person, you can bid over the internet through Proxibid. You can also leave prebids. The event starts at 10AM and goes on till everything is sold. It's the perfect kick off to yard sale season.

Good Friday Church Service Once again this year, The Evangelical Christian Fellowship of Cornwall is hosting a Good Friday Church Service at the Aultsville Theater. Born and raised Catholic, Good Friday always had a very special meaning to me. After I became born again, it took an even bigger significance. It is extremely refreshing to see churches work together and to see that the fellowship, once a year, gives churches of numerous denominations the opportunity to gather with other churches to celebrate a very special time of the year. Service starts at 10:30 AM. Everyone Welcome.

We have a date... And a venue! June 29th will be our big 1 year anniversary bash and award ceremony and it will take place at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. We will spend the night rolling over laughing as Wendy Farha (www.wendy.ca) takes the stage for the ultimate entertainment. Wendy is a singer / comedian / Breast Cancer survivor. It's not all serious, though . . . her comedic side is never very far away and she's got tons of stories and songs to make you smile. Her "Menopause" song is a favorite with the ladies, and she's also pretty well-known for her jokes and her impersonations. She loves to laugh and to get others laughing, which always makes for a fun event with lots of music and hilarity. Any profits from the event will be donated to the Breast Cancer Society. The price per person is $50 - Tickets will be available soon. Pre order yours today by calling the office at 613-935-8101 or by email at info@thelocalseeker.com

Famous Cornwall and Area Federal Politicians BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

In Lamoureux Park SPRING HOURS for April the Cornwall Community Museum

is now open Wed. to Sunday from noon to 4 pm. Admission is free, info. 613 936-0842

The photographs and postcards are from the collection of more than 10,000 images at the Cornwall Community Museum. If you are interested in learning more about our history, the museum has a wide selection old and modern local histories for sale, .

For the month of April we are featuring the original 19th century architectural drawings of Cornwall's Post Office at Pitt and 2nd Streets Since its founding in 1784, Cornwall and Eastern Ontario have been home to numerous important politicians on the federal scene, including one Prime Minister, Canada's Postmaster General, a Minister of Transport, a Minister of State for Trade, a Speaker of the House of Commons and two High Commissioners to London, to name just a few. With an upcoming federal election, this photomontage will highlight some of these colourful and important personages.

Andrew Broder started his political career as the provincial representative for Dundas from 1875 to 1886, and switched to federal politics in 1896 when he won a seat for the Liberals which he held until 1917.

Lieutenant-Colonel "Rory" Roderick R. McLennan, Conservative MP for Glengarry County, 1891 - 1900. Glengarry likes its figures to be larger than life, and McLennan fits the bill. Born in Charlottenburg Township, McLennan was one of Canada's top athletes. A successful railway contractor for the CPR, he opened a private bank in Alexandria in 1895. He served as Lieutenant-Colonel for the 59th Battalion (SD & G Highlanders) and moved to Cornwall where he purchased the house that became the Nazareth Orphanage. He founded the McLennan scholarship at Queen's University in Kingston.

William Lyon Mackenzie King. Did you know that King, Prime Minister of Canada from 1935 to 1948, represented Glengarry County from 1945 until 1948? In 1945 he crushed his Independent Liberal opponent Richard Monahan 4,551 to 325. The Conservatives didn't even bother to field a candidate. Until the last Federal Election Glengarry County was an almost impregnable Liberal stronghold.

An election postcard for Stormont's Conservative Candidate Robert A. Pringle. Pringle represented our area for 1900 to 1908.

COFFEE GRINDS by Jason Setnyk

Signs, Signs, every where there are signs! Sounds like the lyrics to a Five Man Electrical Band song, but I am actually talking about the Federal Election on May 2nd! There are signs up in every riding across Canada including SDSG, where many people choose to publicly show support for their favourite political party or candidate. During one of his skits at the Mayor's Spring Celebration of the Arts, Graham Greer spoke about lawn signs. Greer joked about how his Father-in-law who lives across the road had a tiny blue sign on his lawn, while he (Greer) had a much larger red sign on his lawn. The next morning Graham awoke to see Guy Lauzon's team hammering a gigantic Conservative sign next door. In response Greer requested an even larger Bernadette Clement

sign for his lawn. Visual artist Jacqueline Milner asked on Facebook: "This has me pondering the question, does size really matter?" My reply is "LOL". Very funny Jacqueline and thanks for giving me permission to print your quote. Lawn signs themselves are not always the best indication of who will win or lose an election. Former Member of Parliament Ed Lumley whom I recently spoke with would probably agree with this sentiment. I assume current Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger would also agree, because despite being out signed by his opponent, Builder Bob still won the municipal election. I would like to share an experience I had last week while volunteering and going door to door with one of the local candidates. I met this elderly lady who had recently became a Canadian Citizen. In her home country people do not have the right to vote in free elections. She started to cry at the prospect that some Canadians are too apathetic to vote. I wish more people felt like her. I know my grandmother who is an immigrant from the Ukraine appreciates the freedoms we have here in Canada. The Nazi's took over Ukraine, and after World War Two the Communist conquered her home country. She came to Canada as an immigrant to be free from tyranny. That is a part of the reason why I organize events like Rock the Vote, to promote voting and volunteering in the community. Exercising democracy is so important! I would like to say kudos to Awish Aslam (whom I recently added on Facebook). She is an intellectual young lady, a visible minority, and university student. She is voting for the first time in her life on May 2nd. Like any responsible citizen learning about politics, she is carefully studying each political party. She attended rallies for the NDP and Liberals and had photos taken with Jack Layton and Michael Ignatieff. She wants to meet Elizabeth May of the Greens. However, when she attended a Conservative rally to hear Steven Harper speak she was denied entry because event organizers spotted her photo on Facebook with Ignatieff. I think it is a shame that Aslam would be denied the opportunity to hear Harper speak. In a free and open country our Prime Minister should be proud of young Canadians like Aslam who want to vote, and not denying young thoughtful people the chance to make an informed decision. Youth voting is traditionally low in Canada, however that might change thanks to the rant of CBC celebrity Rick Mercer speaking up about the issue. “Voting Mobs” have taken place at several universities, a grass roots effort to get young people to vote. However Guelph Conservative candidate Marty Burke wants to stop a special ballot that took place at the University of Guelph claiming the vote was illegal. Special ballots are allowed under election law to help groups like students who are often underrepresented vote. For the sake of our democracy I hope those 700 votes count. A political celebrity is visiting Cornwall, and no I am not talking about Elizabeth May's three minute pit stop off the train. A former Premier of Ontario is visiting Cornwall. Normally having a former Ontario Premier visit your riding to support your candidacy would be cause for celebration. Unfortunately it's former NDP boss and now Liberal MP Bob Rae. Sure it was over twenty years ago since Bob Rae was sworn in as Ontario Premier, and he has certainly matured as a politician, however he left a long lasting bitter taste in many people's mouths when he was unable to cope with Ontario's worst recession since the Great Depression. Rae was not able to solve the problems created by NAFTA and Free Trade, and in the next Ontario election the NDP was wiped off the political map. Toronto Centre has forgiven Bob Rae, and they elected him as their Liberal Member of Parliament,

The owners and staff at The Grind wish to thank all of our customers for their support and for making our first year a wonderful experience. To say a special thank you, we will be having some Customer Appreciation weekly gift basket draws. Thanks and hope to see you soon. however people in Cornwall and SDSG might not be so forgiving. At best, Bob Rae visiting Cornwall and SDSG is a mix blessing. I recently had a conversation with a school teacher and small business owner. He indicated that he might be voting Conservative in this election. I decided to play devil's advocate. Here is the scenario I presented to him. Pretend your business is worth $13,000 dollars, and you vote and decide that I am going to take over your business for five years. Over that span I make some bad investments, and I borrow some money, and now I have a deficit of $56,000 for your business. Will you re-hire me for another five years? He answers, “well no, of course not, you would be fired.” I then explain that this is what the Conservatives did, except the figures are in the billions. The Liberals had a $13 billion surplus, and over five years Steven Harper's Conservatives turned it into a $56 billion deficit. I understand the importance of fiscal responsibility, however the current government has made some really bad financial decisions, and even the most blue conservative should be worried about this. In hockey news, the Cornwall Colts lost to the Pembroke Lumber Kings. It was a great effort by the Colts, however the Kings were just a little too much to handle. In the Stanley Cup playoffs Vancouver has Chicago (the defending Stanley Cup Champions) on the ropes with an early 2-0 series lead. Vancouver are the favourites to win the series. In the east, hockey experts including Don Cherry all agreed Montreal had no chance in hell of beating Boston, despite the fact that the Habs won the seasons series against the Bruins. Now Montreal is up 2-0 winning both games in Boston. Carey Price is starting to show real maturity, and PK Subban has been simply incredible. Boston should still not be discounted, despite the two game deficit, however the Montreal Canadiens should never have been underestimated in the first place. My name is Jason Setnyk, and these are my coffee grinds. The Cornwall Underground has been online serving the local music community since August 1999. This blog is run by music promoter and photographer Jason Setnyk who also organizes local Rock for Charity and Rock the Vote events. www.cornwallunderground.blogspot.com

ROCK FOR CHARITY - The next Rock for Charity is on Friday April 22nd 2011. The fourteenth Rock for Charity will be hosted at Remington's Deli and Bar on 101 Montreal Road. Musicians playing this charity fundraiser are Jamie Jarvo, Tommy Heatley, Ewen McIntosh, Joel Sauve, Boozehound (with Jessy Brown, Denis Andre, Ben Potrais, and Greg Poapst), Broadened Horizons (with Jeremy Rae Blair, Travis Alguire, and Bentley Roy), Brandon O'Flaherty, plus host Jason Setnyk. It's all ages, 6:30pm doors, and $5 admission at the door. 100% of the money raised on Friday April 22nd goes to the SD&G Coalition for Social Justice. To date Rock for Charity has raised over $5100 for various local charities and non profit groups that make Cornwall and SD&G a better community to live in. All five Federal Candidates: Guy Lauzon, Bernadette Clement, Mario Leclerc, Wyatt Walsh, and Darcy Neal Donnelly have all received invitations to attend. Every candidate that shows up will have two minutes to speak at this event.

THIS IS MY FATHER’S WORLD

by Adrienne Toews

All through the Bible, Jesus, the greatest teacher ever born, used examples from nature to teach a lesson or to explain a mystery. With the Easter season upon us, let’s discuss what is probably the most awesome mystery – the Resurrection. To help explain this profound event, our Father created an equally awesome creature. Consider the Monarch butterfly. It starts out as a slow, plodding caterpillar – confined to eat and walk around on the earth, subject to gravity and dangerous predators and famine and drought. Then, at the proper time, it spins a silky web about itself and “buries” itself inside this chrysalis. While in there it releases chemicals stored in its body and dissolves itself into a liquid mush! Then – a miracle! In just eight days, out of this liquidy mush, a new body with internal organs and wings forms and a full-size butterfly emerges – a brand new creature; a thing of beauty. No longer constrained by its clumsy old body, it is free to soar and ride the winds. But the transformation is only part of the amazing story. Most Monarchs are born in the U.S. or Canada, but they can migrate up to 3000 miles to spend the winters in Mexico. (One scientist who finally found their location in Mexico said there were so many butterflies on the trees that the branches were breaking from the weight!) What is more amazing about this migration is that the brand new butterflies never meet their parents, but yet they are able to fly to the same tree in Mexico where their parents and grandparents wintered the year before. They “know” where home is. Thus our Father helps us understand that at the proper time, we too will be freed from this earth-shackled, sluggish body and will soar on the wings of the wind straight to the Father – for we also know where home is.

What is an Entrepreneur? There are many different ways to define it, but what it boils down to is the “recognition and pursuit of an opportunity, with the confidence that you can succeed, with the flexibility to change course as necessary, and with the will to rebound from setbacks." Many entrepreneurs want to be masters of their own fate and they can't find this with traditional employment. While some people see starting a business as more risky than conventional employment, others see it as less risky. Studies have shown that people experience tremendous satisfaction from their work, but how many people are really doing exactly what they want to be doing? Entrepreneurs are usually doing what they want, or, at least, they are doing something which they feel gives them control over their future. They like to be in control of their future and to set their own course. There has been a great deal of research put into the essential qualities required to be a successful entrepreneur. Based on those studies, there are approximately 20 characteristics regarded as being important for success in small business. These characteristics include; high energy level, good physical health, a strong need to achieve, a willingness to take risks, a desire to create, a need to closely associate, a strong desire for money, a willingness to tolerate uncertainty, being well organized, self-reliant, a need for power, patience, competitiveness, a willingness to take initiative, self-confidence, versatility, perseverance, innovativeness and the ability to lead effectively.

More than any other single factor though, perseverance, commitment and determination are critical for success. Entrepreneurs must be totally dedicated to the success of their venture. In many cases, sheer determination and perseverance can compensate for other weaknesses. It will allow the entrepreneur to win against what sometimes appear as overwhelming obstacles. You have probably heard the view expressed by some that “entrepreneurs are born and not made”. What that really means is that commitment must be part of your character, and since it cannot be taught or learned, you must be born with it. Most of the other qualities that contribute to success can be developed or nurtured. So … are you an entrepreneur? An Ontario businessman was speaking to a group of students on the subject of self-employment and entrepreneurship. “When I was in my 20’s” he began, “people called me a hustler; when I was in my 30’s, they called me a businessman. Now I am in my 40’s, and I am called an entrepreneur. I don’t believe that I have changed, and I am not sure that I can even spell the word.” Candy Pollard, Business Consultant CORNWALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISE CENTRE 100 Water Street East, Suite 104, P.O. Are You An Entrepreneur?

The 2010-11 season for the Cornwall Colts will go down as a memorable one for several reasons. Jacob Laliberte setting scoring records, the Colts making their first league final appearance in the Ian MacInnis era and 6th overall and it was the swan song for longtime defencemen Matt Jacobs and Leslie Lavictoire (as well as Laliberte). There’s no shame in losing the way to Colts lost, playing their hearts out in an energetic and entertaining fashion. The Pembroke Lumber Kings are, after all, 5 time champions! This year’s Colts squad brought back memories of past championship calibre teams from the Ed Lumley or Si Miller Arenas. Long time fans remembers names like Boisvert, Meloche, Legue, Moreau, Verdone, Vokey and Schembri. Laliberte, the Spink twins and goaltender Pete Karvouniaris bought a buzz back to the Ed that’s been missing since the 2008 RBC Cup. While the Colts didn’t claim their 5th league championship, they did remind us that they can, every so often become an important part of the fabric of the city. I believe this is one Colts team that will be remembered as a championship team because of what they brought back memories from past victories while engraining a new chapter in the winning history of Colts hockey. A tip of the hat to the players and off-ice personnel.

FROM SHARYN’S PANTRY by Sharyn Thompson

SWEET TREATS FOR EASTER You may want to try a few new recipes for your Easter dessert table. The chocolate swirl cheesecake is spectacular. It looks as good as it tastes. The cherry cheese pie is so simple to make, even if you are short on time, you can make this with ease. The ducky cookies will be a special treat for the children who attend the "PUDDLEDUCK DAY" at Cooper Marsh on Sunday May 1 st. Jean will lovingly decorate each cookie with yellow beaks and wings. I hope you plan to take the kids down to have some fun there. The recipe comes from Mavis Wert's own Country Fare Cookbook which she wrote for her family and friends in 1987. I just love using her practical and delicious recipes. I've never had a failure with any of them. Thanks Mavis for sharing your recipe with us. I hope you all have a happy and Holy Easter with your families.

CHOCOLATE SWIRL CHEESECAKE You may want to make this a day before you plan to serve it, as it must chill for several hours at least after baking. You can garnish the finished cake with some chocolate curls just before serving. Or you could scatter some raspberries around the cheesecake.

BASE; 1 cup chocolate oreo crumbs ( we sell this at Sharyn's Pantry ) 3 tbsp. white sugar 3 tbsp. butter, melted FILLING; 3- 8 oz. pkg. Philadelphia cream cheese, at room temperature 3/4 cup white sugar 1 tsp. pure vanilla 3 extra large eggs, at room temperature 1 square of unsweetened chocolate, melted (we sell this bulk at Sharyn's Pantry ) METHOD - BASE; • You will use a 9" springform pan. Spray it with Pam or any no-stick spray. • Set your oven at 350 degrees F. • Melt the butter and stir this into the oreo crumbs and white sugar. • Press the crumb mixture into the prepared 9" springform pan. • Bake this for 10 minutes in the pre-heated oven. FILLING; • Change the oven temperature to 450 degrees F. • Make sure that the cream cheese is very soft. If it isn't, you may have lumps in your filling. • Using an electric mixer, whip the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. • Add the eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. • Remove 1 cup of the batter and stir the melted square of unsweetened chocolate into it. • Alternately, spoon the plain batter and the chocolate batter into the crumb crust. • Swirl a pattern with a knife blade into the cheesecake. • Bake the cheesecake in the 450 degree F. oven for just 10 minutes, then lower the oven temperature to 250 degrees F. and bake the cake for 30 minutes. • Carefully, run a sharp knife blade around the rim to the springform pan, but don't loosen the ring. You will have the cake cool at room temperature, then place it in you fridge to cool for at least 3 hours or overnite. • Remove the ring from the pan just before serving. • You can sift a little cocoa powder or icing sugar onto each serving plate before placing a slice of the cheesecake on it. Then scatter a few fresh raspberries and/or chocolate curls for extra show. ENJOY!

NO-BAKE CHERRY CHEESECAKE PIE You can make your own or buy a prepared 9" graham crumb pie crust. ( we sell these ) 1- 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened a 2- cup container of our cherry pie filling, 1 can of Eagle Brand condensed milk only $1.79 per pound...it's chock full of 1/4 cup lemon juice cherries 1 -1/2 tsp. pure vanilla

THE LOCAL SEEKER (April 22 - pg. 10)

CHERRY PIE FILLING ONLY $ 1.79/ LB. METHOD; • Using an electric mixer, beat the softened cream cheese in a large bowl until light and fluffy. • Add the condensed milk and beat until blended. • Stir in the lemon juice and vanilla and mix well. • Pour this mixture into the prepared graham crumb crust, spread evenly. • Place the pie in the fridge for at least 3 hours, or until set. • Top with the cherry pie filling just before serving. • Refrigerate any leftovers. ENJOY!

'DUCKY' SUGAR COOKIES Mavis' sugar cookies have you make a top and bottom cookie, then when cooled completely, you spread a little crabapple jelly in between. These a delicious! For our 'DUCKY' cookies to serve at the PUDDLEDUCK DAY on May 1st at Cooper Marsh, we just made plain sugar cookies, which Jean will decorate with some yellow icing for their beaks and wings, etc. You can use our store's Linzer cookie cutter set to make the double layer filled cookies. The centres are tiny heart, diamond, circle, star shapes to cut out your top part of the cookie. The recipe made 57 ducky cookies and 60 double cookies for filling with the crabapple jelly. They are tender, buttery and delicious! 1 cup butter, soft, at room temperature 1 cup white sugar 2 eggs 2 -1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 level tsp. baking soda 2 level tsp. cream of tartar 1/2 tsp. fine salt 1 tsp. pure vanilla METHOD; • Cream the soft butter and the white sugar, mixing well. • Add the eggs and beat well again. • Add the vanilla and mix well. • Sift the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt into a separate bowl. • Gradually add the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition. • I used my handy pastry cloth and rolling pin cover to make rolling out of the cookies easier. You will use less flour so your cookies will be more tender. We sell this very handy set in my store. • Lightly flour your counter top and rolling pin ( or the pastry cloth and rolling pin cover ) and roll the cookies thinly. • Cut the cookies into duckies ( we sell the cookie cutter) or into linzer top and bottom cookies. • Place the cookies on parchment lined cookie sheets and bake in a pre-heated 325 degree F. oven for about 10 minutes. The cookies should be only slightly golden in colour. • Cool the cookies on a wire cooling rack. • You can put two cookies together with a tsp. of crabapple jelly. You can also sift a little icing sugar over each cookie before serving. ENJOY!

3 WORDS: passionate, dedicated and persistent WHAT IS THE BIG ISSUE IN THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN? · Making life more affordable – giving families a break, not just the well connected as Mr. Harper has done. New Democrats will reduce the cost of everyday essentials like home heating. And we’ll ensure that every family takes home more of every paycheque.

· Rewarding job creators - Under Stephen Harper, your tax dollars went to companies shipping Canadian jobs overseas. New Democrats will target investment to small businesses and companies actually creating jobs right here at home.

· Improving front-line health services: New Democrats will take concrete steps to train more family doctors. We’ll improve homecare. And we’ll make your prescription medicines a little more affordable.

MARIO LECLERC

· Putting families first: New Democrats will strengthen pensions. We’ll make childcare and education more accessible. And we’ll improve EI to make it easier for families to care for ageing loved ones.

LIBERAL Candidate, Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry

3 WORDS: Energy, Compassion, Devotion The Parliament of Canada is the house where our democracy lives. We are all in it although we all can’t be there. We are there through our Member of Parliament who represents us. We need to make sure to send Canada our best. And Bernadette Clement is the best person to represent us. She was elected to Cornwall City Council in November of 2006 and re-elected in 2010. She knows how important it is to listen and work with others. She has been a lawyer with the Legal Clinic in Cornwall for over 20 years, helping victims of crime, injured workers and persons with disabilities. She knows the importance of compassion. She has served on many boards dedicated to improving our area. She knows each person has something to contribute, and that we need to listen and bring people together. She was raised with great respect for both the English and French languages which she speaks fluently, and for all cultures. BERNADETTE As a woman, she deeply believes that we need a fresh approach for our beloved Canada. Her voice will be an independent and strong one. That’s why we need to have Bernadette represent us in Parliament. CLEMENT

CONSERVATIVE Candidate, Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry

3 WORDS: Hardworking, Dedicated, Conservative Since coming to office in 2006, Stephen Harper‘s Government has been implementing a low-tax plan for jobs and growth. Our steady economic leadership has steered the country through the worst global recession since the 1930s. Canada‘s Economic Action Plan has helped the country emerge from the global recession as one of the world‘s top-performing advanced economies. But there is more to be done. The global recovery remains fragile.

GUY LAUZON

A re-elected Conservative Government will re-introduce the budget and implement the Next Phase of Canada‘s Economic Action Plan. Stephen Harper‘s “Here for Canada plan” focuses on five priorities: 1. Creating jobs through training, trade and low taxes 2. Supporting families through our Family Tax Cut and support for seniors and caregivers 3. Eliminating the deficit by 2014-2015 by controlling spending and cutting waste 4. Making our streets safe through new laws to protect children and the elderly 5. Standing on guard for Canada by investing in the development of Canada‘s North, cracking down on human smuggling and strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces. Our approach is fiscally responsible and balanced to ensure that Canada continues to be a world leader in combatting this tough global economic recession.

Wyatt Walsh, GREEN PARTY Candidate, Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry Unfortunately we were unable to get a response from Mr. Walsh, however we wish him all the best in the forthcoming election.

Darcy Neal Donnelly, LIBERTARIAN PARTY Candidate, Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry Unfortunately we were unable to get a response from Darcy Neal Donnelly, however we wish him all the best in the forthcoming election.

BRIAN SEGUIN

The first few months of a year can be quite busy when it comes to your finances. There may be contributions to make to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). And of course, there’s your personal income tax return to prepare, which thankfully will soon be wrapped up for most of us.

Once that’s out of the way, you might want to consider also adding this to your financial “to-do” list: If you have retirement savings and investment accounts scattered among a variety of financial institutions, consider taking control by consolidating everything to one place. It’ll probably make things easier for you next year and beyond. To start, you’ll be able to more effectively track your finances. Your records will be streamlined, sparing you from having to pore over a series of statements and tax documents from different institutions. Monitoring will require less effort, and you’ll likely be able to see the “big picture” more clearly. This should make setting your investment goals and tracking your progress more straightforward. For example, it’ll be easier to gauge aggregate investment returns. At a glance, you’ll be able to assess the specifics of your asset allocation and portfolio construction. When it’s time to choose new investments or rebalance your portfolio, working with one institution can make everything simpler. In particular, buying and selling investments can be less complicated if you can readily move cash from one investment to another. You may also realize a reduction in account administration fees.

What’s more, dealing with a single institution eases the transition from an RRSP to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) when you need to start drawing an income in retirement. Another point to keep in mind is that if you or your spouse should pass away, it becomes much simpler, more convenient and more efficient for the surviving spouse to deal with just one institution. Perhaps the most important benefit of consolidation is the potential for better financial advice. When you deal with a single institution, you can have more informed guidance and a closer, more comprehensive relationship with a financial advisor who has a clearer view of your full financial picture. That professional is put in a better position to help keep you on target for meeting your long-term goals. In short, consolidating can allow you to take control of your financial life and could improve your wealth-building potential by making it much easier to set goals, invest in line with your risk tolerance and investment objectives, and track your progress. If your accounts could use some consolidating, speak to a financial advisor who can assist you with the needed paperwork. Edward Jones. Thanks Seeker Chicks For The Tickets . . .

My review on the "Tribute to Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift Show" by Teen Correspondent, Daniele Breau - St Andrews School My thoughts when the show first started were "What will the star look-a-likes really look like?" and "How will they sound?".

Re-elect a hardworking MP who gets the job done!

When I first saw "Katy Perry" come onto the stage, I thought that she had the looks but her voice sounded nothing like Katy Perry. Then when I saw the "Justin Bieber" I thought that it was a joke, he was very tall and he didn't sing so well, but it started to get better and he was actually quite funny! "Taylor Swift" was gorgeous, she did very well and she was the best one. When I was watching the show I felt humoured and entertained, and the costumes were beautiful. I think that the next time they do a show they need to choreograph the dancing better and check their music equipment because as I was watching the show, the microphone popped and they had to stop to fix it. Over all it was a good show and at times very humourous, I would like the opportunity to go back and see them again soon.

In conclusion, it was nice to see a live show and THANX to the Seeker Chicks for the show tickets!

"The Stars of Pop Tribute" to Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift had an amazing turn out! There were a lot of children, teens and parents that came for the show. First up was the "Katy Perry", she had an amazing appearance and a good connection with the audience. Her vocals were off a little sometimes but her style made up for it all. I believe that she could have been the next real Katy Perry. Next up was none other then the "Justin Bieber". As soon as they had announced him the audience was clapping and cheering as loud as they could. He was a very good dancer and had all the right moves but he didn’t know most of the lyrics, which was a little upsetting but at least he has the good looks. Even though he messed up some of the lyrics the crowd still cheered as loud as they could and sang along. Last but not least was probably my favourite, "Taylor Swift". Can you say "exact look alike"? You could barely tell the difference. She had an amazing voice, style, moves and really connected with the audience the most. Her personality was amazing and she was really sweet.

Guy Lauzon 613-932-VOTE (8683) www.voteguy.ca

They all sang songs that made the pop stars famous and also some from their new albums. During their performances they gave out posters to some lucky fans that they would sign after the show. This show was a big hit, and they might be coming back sometime soon but with more stars. I can say this was something extraordinary and I’m excited to be seeing them again really soon. “About The House”

The last major consideration will be access. When planning to use an attic you need to have a means of getting up and down easily and safely. Now unless your home is pretty old I am guessing there is no existing staircase to the attic. So you'll have to decide whether or not you are able to build a stairwell to the attic or a drop down ladder will suit your needs. If you plan to use it as anything other than a storage room, you will need to have a window that opens, large enough to serve as a second means of egress in case of fire. Dear Joe, My house is not very big and our family is growing. I would like to convert my attic into an extraroom for my kids to play, or maybe an office for my wife and I. Are there things that I should consider when planning a project like this or is it not a good idea? Sincerely, Ext-Attic.

Dear Ext-Attic, I think what you are planning to do is a wonderful idea. But first things first; lets be sure that this is a project that is safe both for your family and your house. If your house is less than 40 or 50 years old you probably won't be able to do anything up there anyway. Unless your house has a framed roof instead of an engineered truss roof there is no way to modify or avoid the structure of these members. Deal breaker. So, say you do have a home that is 50 years old with a wide open attic space, consider that the attic is the main separation between you and the elements. This is where the heat from the summer sun accumulates and where the heat from the house is lost to in the winter time. So insulation will be key in making this a reality. Since you will be strapping and drywalling directly onto the rafters you will lose the all important space essential to retaining and repelling the heat in your house and managing the moisture that is ever present in the attic. With only a 6 inch cavity left, you will not be able to insulate and provide airflow to control moisture. The only exception to this rule is using Urethane spray foam insulation. This is the only product that will bond to the roof structure eliminating the need for airflow. It also has a high enough R value per inch that it will allow you to fill this void and still be sufficiently protected from the elements. You also will not have to install a vapour barrier. Unfortunately, at $1.00 per board foot (12" x 12" x 1") it can be cost prohibitive. Now it can be purchased in do it yourself kits at 600 board feet per kit, but they are still very expensive and don't do quit as good a job as the pros. Now lets turn our attention down. The floor of the attic was probably never intended to be occupied, so you'll have to be assured that the floor joists are strong enough to support the load you intend to place up there. Now I am not talking static load (weight of things that don't move). I am talking about dynamic or live load (weight/vibration cause by things moving around on the floor). If your children are jumping around up there and the floor isn't strong enough, your drywall is likely going to crack and light fixtures rattle off the ceiling, so reinforcing the floor will be key to longevity.

Other than these site specific considerations, it is as simple as any other renovation. So get a certified electrician in to wire it safely and finish it like any other room. Best of luck Ext-attic, you can do it, Joe Dear Joe, My cement front step is crumbling. How can I repair it without ripping out the whole thing? Thanks for your help, Jim. Dear Jim, Here's what you'll need: Concrete (1/2 cubic foot per bag. Figure out the volume of your repair), hammer and chisel, latex bonding agent, hammer drill, self tapping concrete anchors (various lengths) stiff bristle brush and some scraps of plywood for a form. Step one, chisel away all the loose stuff. Step two, chisel more. Step 3, When you think you have removed all the damage concrete, chisel some more until you know you are chiselling stable concrete. Then brush off all the dust. Step 4, drill in anchors every 2-3 inches leaving 1/2 length protruding but not past where the edge of the step will be. Step 5, Cut plywood form to match original profile of step. Install this with a few anchors. Step 6, Mix concrete, make sure you mix enough to do the entire repair. Step 7, brush on latex bonding agent covering entire repair area and anchors. Step 8, pour in concrete, tapping form as you pour to insure it reaches all the small voids at the bottom. Step 9, as concrete sets, tool the surface to match the other steps using a trowel and stiff brush.

Melanie’s Puppy Love Grooming

Step 10, tomorrow, remove the form and plug the holes from the anchors with some cement fines mixed up and pushed in with your fingers. Voila, new step. Good luck, Joe. Thank you to everyone for your contributions this week. If I didn't answer your question, keep watching here each week for more household tips and renovation advice.
