Marie Morrell (right) began her lifestyle organizing business, A Work Easy Solution, in 2007. Since then, she has been able to help enhance the daily lives of her clients both emotionally and financially. She does this by organizing their homes and businesses, by designing organizational systems, and by creating processes specific to each individual client, based on their lifestyle and needs. Marie has helped her clients regain control of their time and surroundings by helping them create a clutter-free environment as well as helping them to exercise self-discipline, stick to their budget and by using simple common sense. Without organization and order you may find yourself bombarded by the urgent matters of the day, putting off prevention to catch up with the immediate. We all know “you have to spend money to make money”, but we also need to spend time to make time. Studies have shown that organized people average 20 days of free time per year. Imagine what you could do with all that extra time! Cont. page 5

CITIZEN’S COALITION SAYS IT HAS TILL JUNE 3RD -This statement (by Mark A MacDonald and Josh Welsh of the Concerned Citizens Coalition) is being issued to address the rumour that a group of local doctors have bought the General Hospital. As far as we know, this is not true. Our understanding is that we have until June 3rd to meet our conditions. The final say regarding the future use of the hospital belongs to the Minister of Health. We have notified her that there is a “Community Proposal” (conditional offer) being brought forward. We want the building to be used for LTC, wheelchair accessible housing and affordable housing for seniors. The building must be used for the common good and social benefit of the community, similar to one in Barrie Ontario.

WANT OF CONFIDENCE VOTE by SDSG MPP Jim McDonell

FOR WHOM THE ADS TOLL by Denis Sabourin In this week’s offering to “The Seeker,” I have been assured by management there will be no reporting of this action to one Steven Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, and as a result I will not be charged with that contemptuous Canadian pass time that he completely detests which is committing sociology. We all understand sociology to be the scientific study of human society and its origins, development, organization and institutions. More specifically and in Steven Harpers terms from his days of studying economics, although he never worked as an economist, at the University of Calgary it is a science that uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social activity, structures and functions. Is it any wonder why he is concerned that if we understand the root cause of a problem then Canadians might reject the simple sound bites offered by his backbench M.P.’s as the real solution to complex issues. My favourite quote this past week came from Pierre Poilievre the M.P. for Nepean –Carleton, “the root cause of terrorism is terrorists.” Now that we have that one solved can anybody tell me what creates a terrorist, or motivates a terrorist to act the way in which they do? Ooopppssss there I go committing sociology again. My second act of sociology in this column is the analysis of the Conservative attack ads launched at Justin Trudeau, virtually minutes after he was named the new leader of the Liberal party of Canada. Much has been said about the ads since they first appeared two weeks ago. Team Steven Harper has taken flack for deliberately misquoting Justin Trudeau in comments about Quebec. The younger Mr. Trudeau was responding to a question about his father nearly a decade ago for a CTV (Canada’s Tory Voice) documentary on former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. The second item that the Tories took heat on in the same ad was the footage of Justin Trudeau performing a modest strip tease at a Canadian Liver Foundation fundraiser in Ottawa. There was no mention of the fact that the Prime Minister’s wife Laureen Harper attended the event. No one has offered comment on how much she bid to have dinner with Mr. Trudeau at the Parliamentary restaurant, which was the prize in the Justin appearance at the fundraiser. The catch line which is the consistent message the Conservatives want to resonate with Canadians is “Justin Trudeau, he’s in way over his head.” Other ads have taken Mr. Trudeau to task for being a teacher, a summer camp counsellor, and other non-essential jobs such as heading up Katimavik. The Tories claim is that Mr. Trudeau has no formal training to become Prime Minister. I know that Steven Harper’s resume was (and still is) pretty slim when it comes to his qualifications to be Prime Minister, but that’s not what the Conservative spin machine wants you to think. For the next two years, until the election campaign in the fall of 2015 the Conservatives will record, log and display any perceived misstep in their estimation by Mr. Trudeau as another example of a young leader in over his head. Their hope is that over the period of time those outside of the Tories solid 32% base of supporters will agree with what they are saying. For the time being the ads are to serve as fodder to the faithful, no matter how distorted !from the truth, no matter how mean, no matter how others speak out against the ads, the goal is to solidify and motivate their base. The base is the key! Keep their support, keep them motivated against the Liberals at all costs, keep them contributing financially to the party, at the end of the next federal election campaign that solid 32 per cent could mean another majority or minority government for Steven Harper. If the ads miss their target, and he loses it will mean the end of his political career. In closing to paraphrase a favourite author, “ Do not ask for whom the ads toll, for they toll for you,” the Conservative 32 per cent.

THE SEEKER (May 3 - pg. 4)

Things are revving up at Queen’s Park as the committee investigations into the billion dollar power plant relocations and the ORNGE air ambulance scandals continue. At the Justice Committee, Liberal Ministers and staffers continue to have selective amnesia during their sworn testimony, requiring letters and emails to prompt their memories. One Liberal staff member couldn’t remember a $721 million offer made to TransCanada that they subsequently turned down for the Oakville relocation until an email with his name on it was produced. Similarly, Premier Wynne could not recall a cancellation meeting she attended until the attendance record was produced highlighting that she had signed in as the chair-person. Expert witnesses have pegged the relocation cost of this power plant at over $800 million, even though the Wynne Liberals are still sticking to their original estimate of $40 million. The Auditor-General is expected to report back to the Legislature in September on the cancellation costs of the Oakville power plant. Earlier this month, he identified that the taxpayers are on the hook for $275 million to move the Mississauga Plant, 50% higher than the Wynne government had acknowledged. Since getting elected in October 2011, I have witnessed the continuous obstruction by the McGuinty-Wynne government to hide the truth from the people of Ontario. Instead of focusing on the more than half a million people of this province who don’t have a job, they have turned all their attention to saving their own. The gas plant scandal is the latest and most blatant example of the wasteful spending by this government. Investigations into the ORGNE air ambulance and E-health scandals are being treated with the same callous disregard for the people’s basic right to open and transparent government. At a time when we are seeing cuts to health care and to programs designed to help our most vulnerable, they are wasting billions of dollars. It is for this reason that the Ontario PC caucus has introduced a non-confidence motion against this government. Unfortunately, for the debate to occur, all three parties must agree to accept the motion. We believe that this government and its unelected Premier have lost the confidence of the people to lead Ontario back to prosperity. For far too long, Premier Wynne, former Premier McGuinty, and the Liberals have put their party ahead of the people of Ontario. Their legislation, designed to secure large donations and the large Toronto vote at the expense of the taxpayer, is bankrupting our province. Their policies have resulted in the highest energy rates in North America, the highest WSIB rates and property taxes in Canada, and unnecessary red tape that has resulted in our manufacturing companies either cancelling expansion projects here and closing their plants or moving them to another province or neighbouring state. Enough is enough. It’s time to put the people of Ontario first.

Summer Company Deadline Quickly Approaching ... Be your own Boss this summer! Take something you have a passion for and create an idea for a business, obtain a $3,000 grant and be your own boss for the summer. Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? That is exactly what “Summer Company” is all about.

“Summer Company is an exciting opportunity for students to do something they love, learn about the business world first hand, and make money,” said Business Consultant Candy Pollard. “Not only does the student get to be their own boss, and receive start-up funding, they also gain valuable entrepreneurial skills as they turn their business idea into a reality.”

The Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre (CBEC) is currently accepting applications for Summer Company 2013. The deadline of May 17th is quickly approaching, so students must act quickly.

The Summer Company Program has seen a great deal of success in Cornwall and S.D. & G. In the past 5 years, 35 students have opened and successfully run their own businesses, and each has received the maximum grant of $3,000.

Any student who lives in Cornwall, S.D. & G. or Akwesasne is eligible, provided that you are between the ages of 15 and 29 and will be returning to school in the fall.

PASSION for FASHION by Marlene Baker

Summer Company is a program sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade & Employment (MEDT&E) and administered by the CBEC, which assists students in starting and running your own business through the summer months. Participants receive hands on business training and are matched to mentors who help guide you through the business stages, and assist with questions you may have. Each Summer Company participant can receive up to $3,000 to start your own business.

Hi there Everyone, Marlene here for another week of writing for my ~Passion For Fashion~ column. I hope you all are enjoying this incredible Spring weather. Are you still practicing wearing those new higher heels of yours? Hmm? I would like to talk to you about what we wear "under" our clothes this week. Yes, the “Underwear Department.” In order for our "outer clothes" to look their very best, we must have the proper "under attire." You should really go to the experts to have yourself fitted for a brassiere that fits you properly. (Lingerie Dept.) Your brassiere must fit and feel comfortable on you, along with your underwear. If, you are not a size "0" then you, like myself, need a little tummy-hip tucking action. Thus a girdle-like pair of undies will do the trick. You can purchase these at Walmart for an affordable price of about $15 or so... (well worth the expense.) By doing this your clothes (skirts, dresses and pants) that you purchased at the Agape or Value Village(V2) or at the Salvation Army will look and feel so much better on you, by smoothing the lines of your body to enhance your curves. You know ladies, how men like those "curves" of ours!

There are still a few spaces for participants this summer, therefore interested students are encouraged to visit www.summercompany.ca for more information regarding eligibility and program requirements and/or to fill out an initial application. Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre staff are available for assistance in completing applications and answering questions. Contact the Centre by calling 613-933-0074 ext. #2276 or email entrepreneurship@cornwall.ca

The other thing about wearing pretty "underthings" are that they make a woman feel so good and by doing so, it will make you feel prettier and you will be happier. Not only from the "underneath side," but on the inside and outside. Now, if I could get your attention back on track... I would like to talk about the "Make-Over Contest". Seeing that I have been having some trouble with you ladies out there, who want to be apart of this wonderful Contest, but are not willing to get your photo taken, the Seeker Chicks and I have come up with something to help you help us give some “Lucky Lady” a set of fabulous prizes. You can send in a recent photo of yourselves, committing a "Fashion No No". We will then choose from these photos and get back to you. When we do, you will have to sign a waiver and get a new photo with you in the same look for the “Before & After Reveal” in June. Until next time - Keep Smiling because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about. Marlene Baker @ www.fashionography.ca or @ www.fashion4passion.ca

The Seeker Chicks are happy to introduce a new contributor. Welcome Dominique, to the Seeker Team! Our long-awaited spring is finally here! Time to put away that shovel, dust off your bike and enjoy our beautiful waterfront bike path. Or better yet, why not go for a leisurely inline skate from Cornwall to Long Sault? And if the thought of that is equivalent to the sound of nails on a chalk board, I know you’re not alone! And I’m here to help you learn to enjoy inline skating like so many of us do! If you don’t like skating because you feel you can’t skate well enough, just keep in mind that it’s simply a matter of time and practice before you get comfortable. If that is you, don’t attempt the bike bath just yet, and stick to the track we have in front of the bandshell in Lamoureux park. It’s always best to get started on a flat surface, with soft grass around you.

If you love ice skating but find inline skating uncomfortable and hate the vibrating feeling under your feet, it’s more common that you think. The first generation of inline skates were very heavy and the wheels, mostly made of hard plastic, gave a rough ride. But the newer inline skates are now lighter, with soft, gel-like wheels to absorb the bumps in the road! If you have bought inline skates at a bargain department store, unfortunately, you won’t get that nice soft and cushioned feeling since most of them were not made for your comfort but simply for an attractive price tag. If you want to enjoy your time skating, and glide effortlessly, look for a skate from brands like K2 and Rollerblade. These leaders in the industry offer superior soft boots with plenty of support. They come with nice large wheels that absorb vibration and bearings that make the wheels turn with ease. So you can skate effortlessly, even into a strong wind. And the best news is that in-line skates have dropped dramatically in price in recent years. You can now get a good, comfortable pair of skates for $129.99. That is no more than you will pay for quality running shoes. As with most sporting goods, the key to maximum enjoyment is proper fit. At Play It Again Sports, we’ll help you find the proper fit, and the best model to fit your foot shape.

Insight on Inline Skating

As women, why are we so hard on ourselves? How many of us feel like this on a regular basis? I know that I get my days, especially at a certain time of the month where nothing fits right, I feel bloated , nothing seems right.. etc… As women, we are so hard on ourselves, forgetting that we have had babies and that our bodies will change with time as we age, this is a normal life process. There are so many influences out there making us feel inferior and imperfect on a daily basis. With all of the advertisings, billboards, magazines etc…showing very thin and ill looking models, in our minds we think that this is “normal”…WE need to start celebrating our greatness! We have to realize that the importance has to turn to how we feed our bodies, exercise daily, take precautions to protect ourselves naturally against disease and aliments.. etc… this in return will make us feel amazing from the inside/out! I decided this week that I would give you a couple of healthy recipes to make you look and feel amazing!

*HEALTHY QUINOA AND LENTIL SALAD 1 cup lentils, canned or dried 2/3 cup quinoa 2 cups water 1 small red onion, diced 3 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped 4 tbsp fresh mint, chopped 3 tbsp black olives, roughly chopped Salt, pepper to taste

Instructions 1. In a large pot of boiling water, cook lentils for about 15-20 minutes, until tender. Drain. Set aside. (Option: use canned lentils instead). 2. Cook quinoa in another pot of boiling water about 20-30 minutes, also set aside. 3. Combine quinoa and lentils in a large bowl. Add in onion, cilantro, mint, olives, salt and pepper. 4. In a small bowl whisk together olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice and agave. Pour over quinoa and lentil mixture and stir. 5. Serve and enjoy. Enjoy!!! In health….

*QUINOA EDAMAME SALAD Ingredients 1/4 cup dry quinoa 1 cup shelled edamame 8-10 grape tomatoes, sliced in half 1/3 cup chopped onion 2-3 tablespoons vegetable broth For the dressing 2 lemons, squeezed 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon agave nectar Sprinkle of cumin or black pepper Directions 1. Cook quinoa in a pot with about 1 cup water until it becomes like rice. 2. In a heated pan, pour the vegetable broth and simmer. Add onions, tomatoes, and edamame. Transfer quinoa to heated pan and stir-fry. 3. Add dressing on top and serve. Makes one hearty meal or two smaller portions.

And at Play It Again Sports, you can always get a deal if you bring in gently-used sporting goods to trade in. With a trade, you never pay full price! Inline skating is a great, low-impact workout that let’s you enjoy the great outdoors and Cornwall’s amazing waterfront scenery. All at an affordable price.

SEEKERS PEOPLE IN THE “LOUPE” Ontario and our members currently pay an annual fee of $99.00. Each and every dollar goes directly back in to the group and is completely refundable if you do not receive any referrals from within the group. After all, the purpose of CBN is to exchange leads and referrals, not simply collect membership fees.

FIVE QUESTIONS with Investor and Entrepreneur Brock Frost Brock Frost was born in Cornwall Ontario and raised in Ingleside. While completing his education at Queen’s University, Frost became interested in real estate. He focuses mostly on the investment side of real estate ranging from rental properties, foreclosure acquisitions, international development and construction. Frost works as a sales representative at Storm Realty, he is also the founder of The Frost Group Inc., the founder and president of the Cornwall Business Network, and he is very active in the community.

Brock Frost answers five questions for the Seeker. This interview was conducted by by Jason Setnyk. 1. You are the President and founder of the Cornwall Business Network. What was the rationale behind this organization? What opportunities and/or services does the CBN offer its members that other business associations do not? In November 2011, I was approached by a former colleague about launching a new networking group in Cornwall. The idea was to provide a more modern twist on business networking that did not exist in our community at the time. Initially, I was hesitant to involve myself in another project but after a week of meetings and discussions, I jumped on board and Cornwall Business Network was born.

In a short time, our group has surpassed expectations both for our members and in the community. We take tremendous pride knowing that our members reap more referrals from CBN then from any other group of its’ kind (according to our own members!). I believe this is partly due to the fact that we limit access to CBN to one member from each different industry. One lawyer, one realtor, one electrician and so on. Cornwall Business Network is a registered non-profit organization in the Province of

2. Is Cornwall Ontario a business friendly City? What do you think the City is doing right and where can the City improve in regards to Economic Development and growth?

I must be careful what I say here! Is Cornwall a business friendly city? Well, I think it definitely has its’ moments. We are far from perfect but I think we are definitely heading in the right direction.

One way in which I always judge economic growth is through the real estate market. Are property values increasing? Decreasing? What is the rental market like and what are the capitalization rates? Is construction on an incline or decline? Are outside investors looking to buy property in Cornwall? I can say with certainty (and I am heavily invested in the Cornwall real estate market), that Cornwall is showing positive signs in this regard. We are not perfect, and I believe we could definitely use some fresh ideas, but I am pleased with the direction the City is taking as a whole.

3. You founded the Church on Sydney. What was your vision behind it? Tell us about that experience and endeavour.

The Church on Sydney, as with any of my other projects, was geared towards promoting culture in the community and enhancing entrepreneurship. I had always envisioned a location in which entrepreneurs and freelancers from all walks of life could come together with a single purpose. The Church, with its’ vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls offered services such as Wi-Fi, desk space and everything else you needed to get your work done, all in a funky and modern environment. From the day we opened the doors the community response was overwhelming. I was literally without words as I watched the support poor through the doors; member after member and event after event. Within a few short months we were booked solid almost every night all while maintaining the original concept of a networking hub. In fact,

in 2012 we were nominated for New Business of the Year.

It is unfortunate that this project was cut short due to unbelievable circumstances but as any business person knows, we all must learn from our experiences, embrace it, and move on. And I have.

4. You were on the Eagle's Nest Panel as a judge. Tell us a bit about the Eagle's nest. What did you learn from that experience and furthermore what do you hope that the contestants learned from you and the panel participating in that competition?

Who doesn’t like Dragon’s Den?? Well, Eagle’s Nest is Cornwall’s version of the popular Canadian TV show. Being an entrepreneur has taught me that many people have a lot of great business ideas but often lack the resources in order to transform their ideas into a functioning reality. Eagle’s Nest was created for that specific reason: not only to help promote entrepreneurship but more importantly award those individuals with real cash that they can use to help grow their own businesses. The show was a huge success and we are currently working on Season 2. My goal for the upcoming season is to substantially increase the prize money awarded with a top prize of $10,000 (but don’t tell anyone just yet!)

5. Storm Realty has been active in the community supporting Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Cornwall's Winterfest Carnival. What is your philosophy about business and community, and how does your involvement with Storm Realty fit in to that?

Storm Realty Cornwall is without a doubt a wonderful place to work. Steven Iwachniuk has done a tremendous job promoting his brand all while giving back to the community which helped shape his own career.

Business and community, to me, are synonymous. You cannot have one without the other and they come hand-in-hand. To be successful in business means giving back to your community and having a great community means having successful business people who call it home. Storm Realty embraces this philosophy wholeheartedly and it is an honour to be part of such an amazing team.

Thank you for the interview Brock Frost, the Seeker wishes you the best with your future endeavours.

SOME HEALTHY BREAKFAST IDEAS

Here was how I made this meal with no recipe to start with. All I knew was that I would use some of my garden kale.

INGREDIENTS: 6 eggs a dash of salt and pepper 3 tbsp. water 1 tsp. olive oil with 1 tbsp. butter 1 Spanish onion, diced 1 garlic clove, minced 1 cup of finely chopped fresh garden kale ( Rinse first, then cut out the tough centre rib before chopping the kale leaves) 1/3 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup cooked leftover potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces

METHOD: -In a deep-sided frying pan, heat the olive oil and butter. -Add the diced onion and saute this for a few minutes, until it

Actions Speak Louder Than Words It’s hard to believe we are already in May. We are finally experiencing the warm weather and signs of spring. The campuess are starting to empty as students make their way home or stay in their new locations and such begins a very busy cycle for me with Bursary and Scholarship selections, preparation for convocation and several additional alumni events. In the midst of it all, I hope to start exploring my new surroundings. After what seems like a very cold winter, I am feeling the need to get out more. It isn’t easy now that I am in a new city but it is an important process. I recently received some advice about my new life and I think it is time I take it.

THE SEEKER (May 3 - pg. 12)

medium heat for about 5 minutes, adding the minced garlic during the last half minute of cooking. -In a bowl, beat the eggs with the water and salt and pepper. -Pour them over the kale mixture in the frying pan. Cook as you would for scrambled eggs. -When the egg mixture is nearly set, sprinkle over top, the grated cheddar cheese. -Once the cheese begins to melt, turn the frittata to brown both sides slightly. -Serve with good multi-grain buns or toast for a hearty breakfast or even supper. -This serves 2 or 3 nicely. ENJOY!

I am guilty of waiting on an invitation instead of initiating them. I had to decline some offers due to a busy schedule, but when I reflect back on the past, that is what I have always done. I put my son and work first. I possibly hid behind them, but now I know that it is time to get out from behind my desk and stop using my new place as just temporary quarters. It is time to stretch out and broaden my horizons. I feel like I spend my life patiently waiting in line, and often letting people cut in without any regard for how I feel. Lately though I realize I am not doing myself or anyone any favours with this attitude. Someone told me I deserve to come first and it resonated with me. I have spent my life doing the opposite. I patiently wait on the sidelines, I am the understanding one and the one who can be called on when needed. These aren’t bad qualities, but there are times where you have to assess your own needs and how to reach them.

I took on this new adventure when I realized things were out of whack. I recently spent time with a friend who confided in me and I couldn’t help but think she is selling herself short and then I realized, so am I. I arrived in this new city with a blank page, and instead of filling it with new stories, I have remained stagnant. If you keep replaying the same parts without movement or direction, then are you growing? Not really. Taking chances can be difficult, but I am the one who moved away to take a new position, so getting out of my shell and really living shouldn’t be too hard. So I think it is time to start filling out those pages, accept invitations that are presented and take action. Actions speak louder than words and right now the silence is deafening.

POSTCARDS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BRAIN by Sandra Taylor Hedges

SEEKING THE ARTS • SEEKING THE ARTS

way will be revealed. This really irks my Left Brain husband when he asks me how I plan to make something I set a goal on happen and I cheerily say “I don’t know? It’s all a mystery right now.”

The Art of Making your own Luck Throughout my life I have had some interesting twists and turns while pursuing various careers and businesses that I have been involved in. Inevitably when things were going very good and I was reaping the rewards of my hard work someone would say to me, “You are so Lucky!”. I remember the first time I heard this I was taken back for a moment and then realized “Luck” had nothing to do with it. What did have everything to do with it was a lot of hard work, perseverance and sacrifice. Once we accept this fact we can all create our own “Luck” and not feel we are at the mercy of the gods fickle whims. The first step in making your own luck is to have a goal. This goal is the key to getting all the rewards that we all so richly deserve and those rewards may or may not be monetary, money is often not the true reward of an artist, it may be that your idea of a reward is to have people love and appreciate what you do. That is often more important to an artist than anything else but we all gotta’ eat so don’t set a goal without a little of the green stuff flowing your way too. The goal you chose is as unique as what you do, it doesn’t have to be a world famous in your lifetime Artist goal but without it you are just floating around like a canoe without a paddle. Oh, you will get somewhere but whether that’s where you wanted to go becomes the problem. So, when setting goals make sure they are very clear. Take time to write them down and tweek or change them after you read them over a couple of times. Think of a goal as a destination and the getting from here to there as the Mystery. I love referring to this part as the mystery because often we are not the least bit sure how we can get there but with a positive attitude and willingness to work hard the

The next step to making your own luck is asking yourself if there is anything in the here and now that you are able to do to move you closer to that goal. Do you need to take some classes or workshops? Do you need to save or borrow a certain amount of money? Do you know anyone else who has already (or is on their way) obtained a similar goal that could mentor you. The more ideas that you can come up with that are taking you in the direction of your goal the more ideas and opportunities will be presented to you along the way. The third and most important thing you need to do is once you have a rough plan, work the plan but at the same time keep it open to changes. The fact that how we get there is a mystery means we should avoid trying to control the outcome of everything we plan and be willing to go with the flow. The one sure fire way to stop yourself from getting where you want to go is to be inflexible. I do mean you should be flexible but not wishy washy. Try to weigh out the advice being dished out to you before you change direction. Well-meaning people will tell you to stop working so hard or you should get a real job and just be a weekend Artist, ignore these people. They will be the same ones that will tell you that you are lucky later. We will talk more about this “Luck” thing next time but in the mean-time if you haven’t set a goal for your career in Art start working on it. NEWS THIS WEEK from www.theseeker.ca Matthew Atchison attends Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada's Social Innovators Youth Summit 2013 Article by Jason Setnyk, Submitted Photos Matthew Atchison was the local youth that attended the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada's Social Innovators Youth Summit 2013. Atchison who was a little brother that graduated the program, is now 19 years old, and attending college.

Atchison and others in attendance had the unique opportunity to meet many famous people over the course of five days.

There were many celebrities that participated in the gala celebrations Group photo with Gover nor General of Canada Da including Olympic Gold Medallist Donovan vid Lloyd Johnston Bailey, Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler, Boston Bruins hockey star Bobby Orr, and Governor General of Canada David Lloyd Johnston just to name a few. Matthew Atchison was only one of a hundred people chosen to attend the organizations 100th anniversary celebrations in Ottawa. “He knows exactly what it means to give back and was the perfect choice to have at this very special celebration, says Amanda Brisson who is Executive Director at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District.

Donovan Bailey and Matthew Atchison (Below) Laura Kaeppeler (Miss America 2012) and Matthew Atchison

This news worthy event was covered by CTV and the Wall Street Journal, and the Seeker is pleased to have a chance to cover this story from a local angle and to interview Matthew Atchison.

Jason Setnyk Interviews Matthew Atchison who attended the BBBS 2013 Youth Summit 1 - Tell us a bit about having a Big Brother growing up, and what impact did that relationship have on your life? Overall, I think the greatest thing that my Big Brother taught me as I was growing up was that I was my own individual with my own personality, talents and potential. I grew up as the second youngest in a large family of 6 kids that were being raised alone by our amazing mother. Such a busy house made it hard for me, a very quiet and reserved child, to really find a voice and feel as though I fit in such a big group of people that I quite naturally knew I was very different from. I didn't know how to define or place myself, as everything I tried to identify with that my siblings did never really "resonated" with me. I'm sure this continued into my time with my Big Brother. Looking back, I know that he gave me the attention and time to express myself that I needed to finally realize that it was OK that I wasn't exactly like my siblings: I was my own person with my own interests and opinions, and even though my voice wasn't heard in the same way as the others in my home, I still had my own voice that deserved to be heard. From that realization came a deep sense of peace that continues to grow to this day that reminds me that I am who I am, and no one but I can decide who I will become. This peace continues to rid me of fears and insecurities that hold me back from being open to the things that have helped me grow, especially all the opportunities that Big Brothers & Big Sisters has offered me.

2 - What was your reaction to being one of a hundred youth chosen to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada?

My reaction was immediate gratitude and amazement. Big Brothers & Big Sisters had already gotten me mentors and had chosen me to go to the Tim Horton Children's Leadership camps for six years for the Youth Leadership Program. I was yet again amazed at the influence this organization had on my life with all the unique and extraordinary opportunities that they have given to me, so I was certainly appreciative for them considering me. However this event was something I've never heard of before, and I was concerned over the fact that it would interfere with my college schedule, so I was quite reluctant and skeptical as to my ability to participate in the event. However I was fortunate enough to have college professors who were extremely supportive and agreed that it was too great an opportunity to pass up.

I also found out that this event was being facilitated by the Me to We organization and sponsored by many great companies, such as WestJet and MasterCard. I had seen Me to We's "WE Day" event once before and absolutely loved the simple concept that they adopted for their organization, as found on their website: "a movement of people coming together for the greater good". I knew right away that this was no small event, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get together with other youth and an organization that shared a passion alongside my own for addressing the social issues our many societies face.

3 - Tell us about the experience, meeting other Little's, and having celebrities in attendance too.

This experience was amazing and completely irreplaceable. I arrived at the

Holiday Inn in Ottawa we were all staying at on Sunday the 14th, we had full days from Monday to Wednesday, and everyone left on Thursday morning. In that time we had 2 main meeting areas within the hotel: the large dining room for all 100 of us and staff, and smaller meeting rooms where we broke off into smaller groups. The larger dining room was where we ate the meals and gathered to hear from various guest speakers such as Tania Archer (Canadian athlete), Donovan Bailey (Canadian Olympic gold medalist), Richard Bartrem (vice president of WestJet), etc. Their speeches surrounded the theme of the summit: how to become a leader of change in our communities. Their stories and advice for success helped set the tone for the week, as one of high energy with wise ways to turn our aspirations and ambitions into reality. The smaller rooms were where most of the time was spent. My group consisted of 27 other youth and 2 facilitators from the Me to We team. We would do various activities to increase our level of comfort with each other, and many activities on increasing our understanding on what it means to be a leader, the different styles of leadership, and we also had activities focused on increasing our awareness of the social issues that we are passionate about changing. The time spent in that group was extremely unique and energizing. We were all there for our own reasons but we all had the same common passion for social change and improvement of the collective human experience. Coming together in such a small group made the 5 days that much more personal, where stories could be shared and knowledge could be gained from each other in what we explicitly called our "Safe Space". Every person's voice was heard in that genuinely supportive and empathetic group, where ideas were born and plans were set in motion.

Spring Clean Your Life With the sounds, sights and smells of spring appearing all around me, the urge to purge has also arrived. It’s that time of year for spring cleaning. This year I am also resting with the question, what would it be like to spring clean my life, not just the house or the garden? With some contemplation on this theme, the following spring cleaning tips have emerged. 1.The Great D & C: I am not referring to a surgical procedure here, rather the desire to simply dust and clean. Doesn’t it feel like there are a few dust bunnies in the corners of your mind and a few dirty floors where you allowed yourself to be a bit of a doormat? Time to change that and get out the scrubbers and the dust mop. Your Strategy – consciously dust out the corners and release any conversations, left over arguments, less than perfect interactions with others, worry and selfcriticism and sweep them into the dustbin. Remember it is only stuff, dust. The beautiful you lies underneath and you want to shine yourself up and prepare for all the amazing things you are about to attract and manifest. 2. The Great Purge: You can start this process physically by visiting the closets and cupboards in your house. As you survey the contents, ask yourself what you no longer need or require. When it comes to your clothes, release anything that has not been worn for the last year, anything which does not have the WOW! Factor, anything torn, used or abused.

Now apply the same principles to your closet of thoughts. Release any thoughts, usually sourced from your inner critic, that no longer serve you, which are worn and torn, don’t fit anymore and are seriously out of date. By the way, most of your inner critic’s messages are out of date, born of some voice from the past who certainly does not deserve any air time. Finally, any thought that does not have the WOW! Factor, that does not lift you up or support you, is destined for the garbage bin. 3. The Great Forgiving: I have through the years made a number of clothing purchases which were outrageous to say the least. Once home and in my closet, I have asked myself, “What were you thinking?” Okay I wasn’t! It is in these moments that I have learned to forgive my momentary lapse in judgment. The same rule applies to other life choices, whether this has been a decision about work, friendship, family or whatever. Forgiveness always starts with self-first, to those places where you have set the standard for yourself so high that you could not possibly meet it, to the places where you have disappointed yourself and possibly others, to those occasions where you have been angry and judgmental of yourself.

example, and easy, effortless and unconditional loving relationship with yourself, replacing the messages from your inner critic. Or an openness to receive all that is in your highest good, whether this is in terms of relationships, your work, or opportunities to grow and expand. I call this Clarity, being clear about what you want in your life and making the choices that lift you up. Spring has arrived providing you with an opportunity to clean up anything that is currently less than perfect. Do not fall prey to the belief that this is not possible. It’s all about choice, you choosing what is perfect for YOU. Invite your friends to join you and create a spring cleaning extravaganza. I look forward to seeing you on the other side, all shiny and sparkly and fueled by all the possibilities that show up when you give them the space that they need!

Let it go! Live by the rule that you are perfect just as you are and that you have done your best. The ’best’ is a moving target, one that gets better every day with the many life lessons you experience and the accrued wisdom that accompanies these lessons. Learn to look to the present moment, what is happening and who you are being today. Consider who you are becoming. Create the space for yourself to continue to grow and learn by forgiving yourself of all the sins you think you have committed. And when you forgive yourself, forgiving others is a lot easier. 4. Manage Space: Once you have purged, dusted and cleaned, there will be more space in your life. You have released all that no longer serves you. The next step, and perhaps just as critical as releasing, is replacing. Once space is created, do not leave it vacant as that allows backwash, a return of all that you are choosing to let go of. Replacing means becoming very clear regarding what you are choosing for your life. For

What Happens to Your Online Life After Death? If you are reading this article, you are also doing other things on the internet at the same time. Likely, you have multiple tabs open with your email, Facebook, blogs, and other sites you visit regularly. What would happen to all those accounts if you passed away? What would you WANT to happen to those accounts? There isn't any law in Canada that deals with online accounts after death and there haven't been any cases in this area yet. But your online life can have significant sentimental value (i.e., Facebook or Flickr photos or a personal blog, etc.) and also a monetary value (i.e., Paypal or online gaming accounts). Terms of service for all these accounts will set out what the service provider's terms are in the event of a death. If you read a few terms of service, you will notice they are all different and you may not end up with the result you want. Take the time to think about all your online accounts and what you might want to happen with them after you pass away. If these accounts are important to you, you need to list these accounts and include clear instructions to a specific person about your wishes with respect to these accounts after your death. You will also need to consider how this person will access your accounts after your death. Providing access to your accounts after death can be tricky. We are always signing up for new services and changing passwords. One option to provide access after death is to include a list of the accounts and passwords in a sealed envelope with your lawyer. This would need to be changed when passwords change. You can also track passwords and save them in an electronic file on your computer, smartphone or using an online service like LastPass, and then leave instructions with your lawyer about how the electronic list can be accessed. I personally use LastPass and have left instructions to an individual I trust about how to access that account (and thus all of my online accounts) after my death. There are also fee- based online service providers who will store passwords and release information after your death such as LegacyLocker. As with any other estate planning issue, be sure to discuss your online life or digital assets and accounts with the lawyer who prepares your wills, so he or she can ensure that your wishes are addressed.

A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands Finally!! Some great weather produced a full weekend of racing activity. Friday night I attended opening night at Can Am Motorsports Park, and returned to Can Am on Saturday afternoon for the first Kart race of the year with my nephew Brandon Revelle behind the wheel of the Finish Line Web Design kart. On Sunday, I traveled up the 401 to Brighton Speedway for their practice session, leading up to their opener next Saturday night. The Empire Super Sprints were at Can Am on Friday night, and typically they put on a great show at the fast half mile track in Lafargeville, New York. When I say typically, that leaves room for the rare occasion that things just don’t go right, and that was the case on Friday night. Multiple cautions over several attempts to get the race underway made for a long night, which included a red flag to refuel the cars before they even completed lap 2. I do enjoy Sprint Car racing most of the time, but this was one that I could have done without. When the race finally came to an end, it was Steve Poirier coming out on top over Dylan Swiernick, Kevin Ward Jr. Michael Parent and Sammy Reakes IV. Brandon Hagan was the Sportsman feature winner, taking the top spot over Taylor Caprara, Mathieu Robinson, Justin Thompson and Dylan Evoy. Charlie Sandercock completed a Brighton Speedway sweep with Greg Belyea and David McDonald rounding out the podium. Glen Forward was the Pro-Street Stock winner, John Stanley was the Thunder Car feature winner, while Nick Webb captured the first ever Novice Sportsman win.

Saturday was another great day as we were able to get to Can Am for the first Kart race of the 2013 season. It was nice to get some laps back on the kart, after a rebuild over the off-season and ended the day with a fourth place finish.

The action moved west to Brighton Speedway on Sunday afternoon for their test and tune practice day. A great turnout of cars hit the track in several local divisions. It was a great day, and really nice to see a great turnout for their practice day, leading up to the opener next week. Elsewhere around the racing scene…Chris Raabe was the Modified winner at Evans Mills on Saturday night. Billy Decker took home the main event win at Brewerton on Friday. Matt Sheppard was the winner at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night, while Chad Brachmann edged out Pete Bicknell for the win at Merrittville Speedway. Ryan Phelps won on Sunday night at Utica Rome Speedway after a great battle up front. Dale Planck was second, Stewart Friesen was third, Alan Johnson fourth and Larry Wight rounded out the top five.
