Feel The Excitement ... 43 Years of Racing at the

FIVE QUESTIONS with school teacher and comedian Neil Carriere. Interview by Jason Setnyk

The Cornwall Motor Speedway is Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec’s number 1 spectator sport. Sunday night racing in Cornwall attracts upwards of 5,000 fans from across Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec and Northern New York!! Families have been making the speedway a tradition since 1970 when it first opened under the name of Power Dam Speedway because of it’s location. Ron Morin (above left photo credit: www.rickattheraces.com) began his journey with the Cornwall Speedway driving Mini and Street stock. A decade later, he decided to take on the challenge of business ownership AND racing simultaneously! Ron hung up his keys when he turned 60 after 50 Feature wins, and decided to devote his full attention to The Cornwall Motor Speedway...making it the best of the best in DIRT Motor Sport! Hard work and tenacity paid off for Ron when he was inducted into the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame, Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame, South Stormont Hall of Fame and received the Jacques Richard Sports Award. Racing isn’t just for men in the family. Carol Morin-Flanagan - above right - (One of Ron’s four daughters) has been the speedway’s General Manager and Ron’s right hand “man” for the past 20 years. You may think that they only go in on Sundays and open the gates but there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes. Carol works all year long preparing for the season! Ron’s granddaughter Jenay Morin, who won the Athlete of the Year at SLC this year, is the first female flag person at the track! The rest of the family either work at the speedway or are avid race fans themselves and you’ll find them every week in the stands watching the races! Continued on page 5
