ONTARIO NDP POSITION ON 2013 ONTARIO BY BRIAN LYNCH Dear Seeker, Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP have made the 2013 Ontario budget better and fairer for everyday Ontarians and as a result are prepared to support the budget. The NDP has been successful in having several of its progressive budget proposals included in the 2013 Ontario budget, namely, jobs for youth, social assistance reform, a 15% cut to auto insurance rates, and more funding for home care to reduce wait times. The Ontario Government has also accepted the NDP request for greater accountability in the budget through the creation of an independent Financial Accountability Office, agreed to more oversight of healthcare, and promised a full debate and financial details before putting forward its road toll plans. Andrea Horwath and the NDP have been driving the agenda at Queen’s Park and getting results that make life fairer, better, and more affordable for everyday people while ensuring that the government is accountable. While the budget does not contain everything that New Democrats put forward, the NDP serves people better when it strives to make the minority government work to build a prosperous and fairer Ontario rather than chase votes in an early election. It is unfortunate that the Hudak Conservatives are more interested in taking a slash and burn approach which will cut essential public services and make Ontario a low wage province. The NDP will continue to work in the Ontario legislature to create and protect good jobs, make life affordable, improve public healthcare and education, provide a fairer tax system, and make the Liberal Government accountable for its promises and actions. -Brian Lynch President of the SDSG NDP Riding Association

MPP JIM MCDONELL DISPLEASED WITH NDP SUPPORT OF LIBERAL BUDGET MPP Jim McDonell was not surprised by the announcement of an NDPLiberal deal on the provincial budget: “The McGuinty-Wynne Liberals have demonstrated time and time again that they are desperate to cling to power at any cost. Whether it is cancelling power plants to save four seats or shutting down the Legislature, there is no limit to the amount of money this Government will spend, as long as it keeps them in power. Today’s deal with the NDP condemns the Province to more debt while six hundred thousand Ontarians will wake up tomorrow without a job to go to.” MPP McDonell insists Ontario can and must do better: “The sooner we change course to a Government that manages the Province’s finances responsibly, lives within its means and respects taxpayer’s dollars by ensuring quality health care, education and infrastructure, the sooner Ontario’s recovery can begin. Unlike the Liberals, preoccupied only with buying union support, and the NDPs succumbing to being bought by the Liberals at the expense of our Province’s future, the Ontario PCs have outlined a path to job creation, prosperity and affordable living for all Ontarians.” MPP McDonell highlighted the priorities of an Ontario PC Government: “I remain determined to build a government that we can afford and protects the things we value most. We will fight for less spending, an affordable public sector, lower taxes, affordable energy, modernized labour laws and less regulation. In order to achieve this change and bring accountability back to the Government of Ontario, we need to change the team that leads it. Today’s deal enables the Liberals to kick the can down the road while our Province suffers. The people of Ontario deserve better.”

We've had many people come through our doors since October of last year not quite certain what lasers are and how they work and help with so many ailments. The list of things that lasers help with has mushroomed to include many things you might not have thought of. 1st of all...the definition a "L.A.S.E.R." is that its an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulation Emission of Radiation. Sounds fancy? Not really! Lasers have been around for much longer than most people think. Its what reads your CDs, your DVDs, your laser printers, laser optics for your communication needs...the list is endless. Lasers have even found themselves useful in the operating room for brain surgery, cataract surgery, tooth whitening, hair removal, pain relief for arthritis as well as smoking and eating addictions among so many other fields within the health spectrum.
PASSION for FASHION by Marlene Baker
SMOKING CESSATION Now, its also been found that auriculotherapy (otherwise known as laser therapy of the auricle) has up to 94% success in the cessation of smoking which puts to shame any of the so called "maintream alternatives" that simply exchange nicotine consumption from your lungs to your mouth or patches. The bottom line is that nicotine is a toxin and you should not be consuming it at all whether its via your lungs of your skin. Auriculotherapy is similar yet different than acupuncture. Acupuncture uses needles on pressure points of the ear whereas auriculotherapy uses electrical impulses (via laser) on the outer aspect of the ear, around the mouth and hands. Each pressure point is stimulated for about 30 seconds and the entire procedure only takes about a half hour. So the question becomes a simple one. How bad do YOU want to quit? Do you have a half hour in your "busy" lives to set aside toward resolving this albatross you've carried around your neck for so long? If you answered no then we suggest you stop reading this article. Most, if not all, of you have tried alternatives like nicotine laced gums, transdermal nicotine patches as well as products like Champix and Zyban which all have addictive
OUR GUARANTEE As an introductory offer, for the next 14 days, we are offering a guaranteed 25% discount below the fee of any other smoking cessation laser clinic in town PLUS, unlike the others, we offer workshop classes to essentially "hold your hand" through the first 10 days to ensure we keep you "on the wagon". These workshops will teach you the ropes of exactly how laser therapy works to rid you from the shackles of the cigarette. You will also learn about the importance of the world's most powerful super natural detox products (including magnesium, vitamin C and Chlorella) toward the elimination of the 4,700 toxins found in cigarettes that wreak havoc in your body. The sooner you pull out all those poisons from your body the sooner any cravings, irritability and insomnia will disappear. Although most other laser centers only do one session...we recommend you have a minimum of two sessions back to back (at ZERO cost for the follow up) in the same week to increase your odds of success. ACHES & PAINS Laser therapy is also very effective for both acute and chronic pain. There's an entire section of our site, www.earthwaylasertherapy.com, dedicated to the reader to better understand how it reduces swelling at the mitochondrial level of the cells of the body. In addition, our laser is the ONLY one approved by the Olympic Training Committee and has been used by many NFL teams including the New England Patriots superbowl champions. Despite all the many accolades by the media, the scientific community, the sports world that this machine has garnered...we believe people should choose trying it for one simple reason! Because it works! That should be the be the primary reason for at least trying to get your aches and pains of arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis...basically anything with an "itis" attached to it. OUR WEBSITE Please visit our website (www.earthwaylasertherapy.com) and click on the smoking cessation subsection to learn more details. Don't wait another minute...make this summer THE SUMMER that you got rid of that habit once and for all! Our site also has a testimonials sub-section which includes videos of local people that have benefited greatly as well as nationally broadcasted news reports highlighting its benefits. Of the local testimonials, one includes a retired prominent dental surgeon who had tried everything you can imagine to resolve his low back pain (which included shock wave therapy) but nothing he'd tried had any PERMANENT relief. Using our ML830 laser however...within 3 sessions he perceived a marked reduction of pain to the point that he's fully active again and painfree nearly 100% of the time. DON'T DELAY....pick up the phone and book your appointment for there's a very limited amount of places for which we can offer you the special introductory special! Call 613-936-1386 and book NOW!!! Meantime, please visit www.earthwaylasertherapy.com to properly get educated on how you'll benefit from giving this 21st century method of healthcare a chance!

A sun hat to wear with your pretty dresses and Spring/Summer outfits, (that you purchased for the many Thrift Stores here in Cornwall.) The students and teachers did this show to raise monies for the Cornwall Children's Treatment Center. Thanks to all who were involved in making this Fashion Show a Wonderful Success! I want to talk about hats this week. Not only is it really important to wear a hat to keep the sun's damaging rays off of your head and face, but they certainly add to your "LOOK!" SEEKERS PEOPLE IN THE “LOUPE”
FIVE QUESTIONS with JAMIE JARVO lead singer of Switchgear Interview and Photo by Jason Setnyk
Jamie Jarvo who grew up in Cornwall Ontario is a professional singer and songwriter of ten years. He is the owner of Jarvo Entertainment, providing karaoke and DJ services for different events. He is a husband and a father of two. He is also the lead singer of Switchgear. Hailing from Cornwall Ontario, SwitchGear broke into the country/rock scene in 2010. Their debut CD entitled “Country in the City” is available online at Itunes. Some of SwitchGear's notable showcases include opening for the legendary Burton Cummings and Suzie McNeil at the Kinsmen Lift-Off Festival and at Cornwall Ribfest. Switchgear have many concerts booked this summer including opening for Emerson Drive on June 22nd at the Maxville Fair, opening for Dean Brody at Cornwall Lift-Off on July 13th, and opening for CCMA's Greg Hanna at Cornwall Ribfest on July 28th. Switchgear are also one of the five finalist for the Seeker Music of the Year Award - Find out who wins Friday June 28th at the Golf and Country Club. Tickets are on sale now!
1 - What are the origins of the band Switchgear, how did you guys come together, where did you come up with the band name, and the concept to perform country / southern rock music?
SwitchGear was a vision that came together after corresponding with childhood friend Jason Sauve. He was living in Calgary and I had heard some of his music online and reached out to him to send me some things to try and work together. We did that for about a year sending tracks back and forth online. Eventually Jason and his family decided to move back to Cornwall and we got together to start the process of putting a band together. We recorded into the late hours of the evening at a local school while trying to get the right mix of people for the band. We went through a few different line ups with some great musicians who because of work commitments couldn't remain with us. Finally we found Scott Reasbeck as a free agent from another band and he joined us settling in beside Jason on guitars and they compliment each other very well. Then we found bassist David Allen through a mutual
friend and finally to solidify our rhythm section, Scott suggested a former band-mate in Kirk Wallace and SwitchGear was a solid five. The band name was something that Jason had used in Calgary. At first he wasn't sure it was the name for us but I couldn't keep the name out of my head. Just something about the name that stood out for me and eventually Jason said yes that's our name. The concept of the band was hard to map out at first since all of us in the band come from a heavier rock influence, but we wanted to be different and from my experience with Karaoke. I noticed a huge shift in country music especially newer country with it's rock influenced guitars and thought that would be a great fit for us. I had seen he popularity of the genre explode and so this is what we decided the avenue for us to go. We also noticed that locally especially nobody else was doing this type of stuff.
2 – Switchgear's song "No Love" was broadcast on the television show "All for Nothing" and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Tell us the story behind all that.
The Oprah thing was just perfect timing for us. I had a friend from High School, Al Charbonneau, who contacted me about this show his friend Christine Giroux was participating in for the W network and Oprah network. He thought our band would be perfect to help raise the most money for her. They had asked local tavern La Maison for the venue and we agreed to play, giving her the proceeds from the door along with raffles and other things. We were told the crew from the show All or Nothing would be there filming but had no visions of ever making it on the actual TV show. The night of the filming La Maison was at full capacity all night, and the night was a great success. Christine ended up winning the show and on the night of airing we sat down to watch the show, and in an unreal experience there we were - SwitchGear on national TV! Needless to say I was doing quite the couch dance. It was one of the highlights for us as a band in the last year and a half of being a band.
3 – What is creative process behind writing a Switchgear song? Furthermore what was the concept behind your first album?
The creative process in writing a Switchgear song is pretty simple actually. Jason usually writes all the music and a lot of the lyrics, and I help with the hooks a phrasing. The first album was a lot of work on Jason's part because he had a lot of stuff written before he got here. So we got together and worked on them long hours to get them to fit into the Switchgear sound. We usually start with a guitar track and then build the song around that. I would describe our sound as new country with rock guitars. Our concept
THE SEEKER (May 31 - pg. 8)
for our debut album was to write really catchy tunes, solid riffs and heartfelt lyrics. The album has some really fun songs like With Her Boots On and Country in the City some really good anthems like Oh What A Feeling and No Love, and some powerful ballads like One More Kiss and even a nod to old country with the song Gypsy Smile. On the follow up album the whole band is getting involved in the writing process and so far the songs are coming along really well. Our first single from it is titled Tanlines. I think this is going to be a fun song people will really enjoy.
4 – Your band has played a series of charity gigs, including a spaghetti dinner for the Agape Centre, and a fundraiser to help a local person get an MS procedure. There are a lot of generous bands in town who give back to the community. What are your thoughts on playing charity concerts?
Charity shows are very important to us. We wish we could say yes to every one that comes along, but sometimes bookings don't allow us to do that. The Rock for Charity shows mean a lot to us so we try to do as many as we can. The Agape is another important organization in our City that we really wanted to help with. I really believe that the musical community in Cornwall can do amazing things together when we join forces. It amazes me the level of high quality talent this City has musically. I've had the pleasure to play in bands with some amazing musicians and jam with a ton more. SwitchGear tries to help out as much as we can allot our time to these causes. Any way that us and all other local bands and artists can do to get together and help raise money for charities I'm positive we will do. The caring musicians have for our City and for charity is undeniable.
5 – In the Fall of 2012 Switchgear released the music video "With Her Boots On!". Tell us the story about creating that music video.
The concept for our video for "With Her Boots On" was a joint effort with us and our director Shaun Ryan of Playmaker Studios. We wanted to have a video that had some elements of what it's like to be at a SwitchGear show, plus we wanted to have some Cornwall landmarks in the video as a way of saying thanks to the City for being so great to us and being very proud of being from Cornwall. So in the video you see some fans going out to a club and being a little bored of it when they get a text saying a Switchgear show is happening at a barn party. So they hop in the car and drive through the City to get to the show and what ensues is a great night of dancing and fun. We had a great time doing the video but it was a very new experience for us and took getting used to especially doing take after take. We are doing the storyboard for our next two videos which will be filmed this summer.
Thank you for this interview Jamie Jarvo. I hope you and the band Switchgear have an amazing and rocking summer!

SCOTTISH OATCAKES
2 level tsp. fine salt 1 lb. Crisco shortening (don't use butter)
METHOD:
1/4 to 1/3 cup cold water (or enough to hold the cookie dough together)
-Combine the flour, sugar, salt and rolled oats in a large bowl. -Cut the shortening into the dry ingredients until it resembles a pie dough, with small pieces of shortening no larger than peas. I use a pastry blender to do this. -Add the cold water, mixing as you do this. You must have enough cold water to hold the dough together, but you don't want the dough to be wet. I squeeze a chunk of it in my hand to see if it holds together. -Flour your counter top- I use my marble pastry board and I place a rolling pin cover over my rolling pin. This is such a great help when rolling pie or cookie dough. You use way less flour and therefore, your dough will be more tender. (we carry a pastry cloth and rolling pin cover at Sharyn's Pantry) -Take a hunk of the dough. Pat it down and lightly flour the dough. Flour your rolling pin cover if you have one or just your rolling pin. Roll the dough as thinly as possible. About 1/8" thick. -Cut it into squares about 3" x3". With an egg lifter, gently lift the squares of oatcakes onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Continue rolling and cutting. -Bake the trays of oatcakes in a 350 degree F. oven until lightly browned, about 8 to 10 minutes. -Allow the oatcakes to cool on the cookie sheets for a few minutes before lifting them to wire cooling racks to cool completely. -I know you will just love this recipe! Pour yourself a nice cup of tea or a cold glass of milk. ENJOY!

Pieces Last week I experienced what felt like the 4 seasons, in the span of a day. The morning started off with torrential rain, then as the rain tapered off it was cool; in no time the temperature increased and it was warm and sunny, so much that I ended up with a sunburn. As the afternoon progressed the temperature dropped severely that goose bumps, trembling and teeth chattering occurred. I joked that all we needed was some hail or snow to cap off the day, and the next morning near Kingston they did have it. Layers are the key with our unpredictable weather, and no matter how prepared I think I am, it seems I always have some element missing.

With frequent travel, this is more problematic that I have decided to create an all season travel bag that I will keep in my car. We're Canadian so better be prepared under any circumstances. I returned to Cornwall again yesterday for work purposes and when I hit the 401 to make my way back to my hometown, it is always bittersweet. I was planning my column this week and was thinking about how people influence your life, both in good ways and bad ways, they take a piece of you and you leave a little piece of yourself with them. As I was driving, a song came on the radio and it reflected the essence of what I was feeling. “Pieces” by Gary Allan is bang on. Pieces of my heart, pieces of my soul...everything I took for them made me who I am. As I approach my home town there is a huge part of me left behind, I remember family times, times spent with friends, former clients, former projects, events, times of joy, times of sorrow and everything in between. Through all the struggles, I became stronger, smarter, a little cautious and brave. I discovered talents I didn’t know I had, I grew as a person and a member of the community, I was connected on so many levels and I think that is why it resonates with me.
So Cornwall will always have a big piece of my heart and slowly I am CHANGER - do you know these businesses? forging connections in Kingston and beyond. Even when things do not

Art, Religion and Spirituality - Part 2 Are we truly free to express ourselves? In answer to my call to give feedback, Artist Dan Burgess, offered this comment: “ I share my work around the world and be it with a Buddhist, Sikh, Muslim or Christian, they are all artists without borders and with the scope and vision to see beyond modernization. We each have our own faith and our spiritual needs and are allowed to express them freely amongst ourselves with never so much as a question” Dan is right about one thing perhaps for the first time in history the modern artist is finally free to express themselves any way they wish but only in the Western culture. There are still many countries where art is censored for subject and overall message. Countries such as Iran, China and in some cases India are still persecuting Artists who dare to speak out on religion and politics. In Iran woman artists are forbidden for simply being a woman many now living in the Western world are writing and painting amazing testaments to the unfair treatment of women in the name of the Koran. In our western culture, although Women are no longer forbidden to be Artists which was true up until the mid 1900’s, we still struggle with the lack of importance attached to some forms of Female art such as Visual Art. Where the Artist is free to express their particular views on religion there is no end to the diverse work as each expression is as unique as the Artist creating it. I have recently been introduced to Music and Literature that has roots in the Hindu and Buddhist philosophy; this art is rich and earthy while at the same time keeping with the modern feel. Many Christian artists are also bringing new life and colour to their work, gone are the stoic paintings of the renaissance with stern faced figures from the Bible and the colourless hymns from our childhood. One question I do have is what about the Art that doesn’t agree with religion or shows it in a slightly negative light; is that accepted or is it censored in the arena of public opinion? Think about the stir movies such as “The Secret” and “The Passion of Christ” created. If you are old enough to remember Madonna’s sexual overtones while wearing a Crucifix you will know the negative feedback she received. Last year I wanted to display one of my Paintings called the Gathering, because some people saw images that they thought were Satanic or a group of Witches, I was discouraged. The truth is others saw Jesus and his disciples, everyone was wrong by the way it was just a group of friends inviting others to join them.
Has your work been censored for being too for or against your personal Spiritual beliefs? If so I want to know. Next week I want to look at how our Art feeds our Soul and welcome your thoughts on that topic as well. ONCE UPON A PAINTBRUSH by Patrick Guindon
POSTCARDS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BRAIN by Sandra Taylor Hedges
SEEKING THE ARTS • SEEKING THE ARTS Children are naturally creative. I know this, because I asked. I asked my class, an equal mix of boys and girls, who are all 10 and 11 years old, if they were creative. Before we could even discuss what creativity meant, or what it could be, they all put their names under the “Yes” column. I think that this is beautiful. To see yourself as creative is the best way to simply be creative. Our talk afterward covered so many ways to be creative: through sports, in music, dance, painting, drawing, writing, solving science and math problems, and even thinking. As one student wrote, “Even thinking is creative, and I’m sure everyone can think.” Encouraging and fostering creativity in young children is, in my opinion, a necessary thing. With the open, creative mind of a young person, anyone can have a positive experience with math, science, languages, social interactions, and more or less, every aspect of life. I asked the kids if being creative was important, and if they felt everyone was creative, and they all agreed that it was both important and natural. If we can foster creativity at a young age, we can have a greater success rate as members of the world – in our jobs, at home, with our relationships, and for the highly focused Creative, in the arts. So how do we do this? Sketching, drawing, painting, scribbling … on large surfaces, or small ones, or medium ones – different sizes force the mind to think creatively: “How will I cover this?” is a great question! Dancing, jumping, playing, singing, yelling, screaming in strange voices, dressing up and playing some more, and engaging with our young as though it is totally, absolutely the normal thing to do. Playing with our food, drawing on the fridge (dry erase markers go perfectly on glass tables, white fridges, and windows), and getting down and dirty in the earth. Plant a garden, pick a flower and live life by appreciating something fun and beautiful every single day. Talk about being creative. Own the art that is made. Ask questions. Ouh and ahh over the creative “stuff” that is being produced. Ask your child to choose their favourite piece of art every so often, and talk about why they love it. Then, tell them why you love it. Children are naturally creative. It’s our job as the big kids in the world to foster and elongate that creativity, for a lifetime of confidence as a creative person. roadSIGNS
The Beginning is Near In a coaching session recently with one of my clients, we discussed her future. After retiring three years ago and taking time to consider her options for the rest of her life, she was now prepared to look at what’s next. As with many of my clients, when the conversation begins, there is a lot of spinning, considering the endless possibilities. Clarity can be elusive. This is where coaching comes in, the opportunity to narrow the field and to identify what it is that really ‘lights’ you up. Following our conversation, my client left for another meeting. I reminded her to watch for the SIGNS. Later that day I received an e-mail from her with the following, “I left your place remembering what you said. When I walked I to my next appointment, I saw this sign, “The Beginning is Near”. Now isn’t that a roadSIGN!” I loved it. That is how it works. The Universe is always on your side, feeding you information constantly. The question is, are you paying attention. My client that day was on high alert, swimming in the conversation of what she wants to attract and create in her life. The message The Beginning is Near seemed so appropriate.
SIGN Spotting SIGNS for me have always represented those Significant Insightful Gold Nuggets informing my Spirit. SIGNS may not be actual signs as my client experienced; they show up in many forms from an interview on the radio, a morning horoscope, a message from a friend, a posting of Facebook, something or someone crossing your path. Life is full of meaning; we are unfortunately, for the most part, oblivious to what is there.
OUT & ABOUT
with Julia Lucio
SIGN spotting requires living consciously, getting away from living life on autopilot which most of us do, and becoming more mindful and aware of what is going on around us. This is a challenge in the fast paced world we live is so yes, it does mean slowing down a bit, noticing more, asking more questions, reflection and sometimes, simply breathing.
Look at it this way. Your life and manifesting what it is you want, is the most significant project you will ever take on. As with any project, it needs to be planned. You need to determine what it is that you desire as you look down the road. We call these intentions, naming what you want. Again, as with any project, you require data. This is where SIGNS come in – the angel whispers offered to you by Source, or the Universe, whatever you call you higher power, telling you whether or not you are on the right path, giving you support and encouragement, confirming the path you have chosen, and occasionally challenging you to change directions. Heavenly Faxes My friend Larry Snow in Colorado calls his SIGNS heavenly faxes and because Colorado has a lot of personalized license plates, cars are his typical SIGN spotting opportunity. After divorcing his wife of seventeen years, and then through therapy giving himself time to heal, Larry found himself attracted to another woman. He was however, reticent to get involved even though he knew that Margie was special and potentially the one. As he considered the past, he found himself behind a green mustang with the license plate LET GO. As Larry said, this caused him to chuckle. A few days later as he was considering his nest steps with Largie, he pulls up behind a Nebraska car with the plate 1 TO GO 4. There was no turning back, the SIGNS in his life were definitely feeding him data. The final SIGN happened a few weeks later, when Larry again hesitated. In his words, “As I looked left before merging into the morning rush-hour traffic, I noticed a blue Volvo cresting the hill on South Wadsworth Boulevard — beneath the snowcapped mountain backdrop its green vanity plate stated simply and succinctly: MARGIE.” Final Word Whether you call them SIGNS, angel whispers, or heavenly faxes, you have access to more information than you can possibly imagine. It’s a simple choice: wake up to your life and become aware of what is going on around you. The beginning is near! Betty Healey Betty Healey is an award winning author, coach and inspiring speaker. Thursday morning, a facebook post grabbed my attention. It was the picture of a perfect cannoli, a golden, crunchy pastry stuffed with white, creamy goodness, laying there on a pan, ready for the taking. And the best part was that these cannolis were made and advertised by Love Love Food, a local company. Unlike their New York City counterpart, which I never, ever fail to stock up on when visiting the Big Apple, these cannolis were within reach. Alleluia! I had to get a printing quote from the wonderful Marnie McKinney at our local UPS Store, so it was the perfect excuse to take a wrong turn and end up on Fourth near Pitt where Love Love Food has shop. Entering Love Love Food was like stepping into a culinary heaven. From rubs to homemade jams and spreads to various cooking utensils, Love Love Food could cater to the finest of palates. Gourmet and wannabe gourmet chefs will surely find specialty items to experiment with. I had very little time, but took a good glimpse at what was around me and I was sold. Love Love Food will definitely see me again. Sad for me, the cannolis were sold out by the time I got there, but that didn't stop me from satisfying my sugar addiction. I opted for a yummy Reese's peanut butter chocolate Cupcake that was, I'm sure, just as decadent as a cannoli. Love Love Food Gourmet Foods & Gifts is located at 10 Fourth St. East Unit B, Cornwall, Ontario

Help Yourself Reduce Investment Stress We all know that stress can have many adverse affects on our lives and can affect the quality of our health. Cutting out stressors, including in your investment activities can have a positive affect. But how can you cut down on the various stresses associated with investing? Here are a few possible “stress-busters”: KNOW YOUR RISK TOLERANCE. If you’re constantly worrying about the value of your investments, your portfolio may simply be too volatile for your individual risk tolerance. Conversely, if you’re always feeling that your investments will never provide you with the growth you need to achieve your long-term goals, you might be investing too conservatively. KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR INVESTMENTS. Uncertainty is often a leading cause of stress. So when you purchase investments that are mysterious to you, you shouldn’t be surprised if they perform in ways that raise your stress levels. Never invest in something unless you fully understand its characteristics and risk potential. BE PREPARED FOR MARKET VOLATILITY. Historically, the financial markets have trended upward, though their past performance can’t guarantee future results. Yet for periods of months, and even years, these same markets can sputter and decline. So when you invest, be aware of this volatility; if you’re prepared for it, you won’t be shocked when it happens, and you should be able to better keep stress at bay.
making with your investments in periods of years, or even decades, rather than days or months. Instead of fretting over your monthly investment statements, compare where you are today versus where you were 10 or 15 years ago. The results may well surprise and help “de-stress” you. By making the right moves for you, you can help take some of the stress out of investing for a long time to come.

MAINTAIN REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. If you think your investments are going to earn a very high rate of return, year after year, you are more than likely going to be disappointed — and you could easily get “stressed out.” You’re much better off, from a stress standpoint, not to expect eye-popping results.

DIVERSIFY YOUR PORTFOLIO. If you were only to own one asset class, such as growth stocks, and that particular segment took a big hit during a market drop, your whole portfolio could suffer, and it could take years to recover — causing you no end of stress. But if you spread your investment dollars among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, government securities and so on — your portfolio has a better chance of weathering the ups and downs of the market. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification may help you reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t prevent losses or guarantee profits.)

THINK LONG TERM. If you only measure your investment success by short-term results, you can feel frustrated and stressed. But when you stop to consider your objectives, you may find that the most important ones, such as a comfortable retirement, are all long-term in nature. Consequently, it makes more sense to measure the progress you’re

one of my favorite recipes, I just find that it is so delicious and quick to prepare. Place 4 cups of washed and chopped rhubarb in the bottom of an 8x8 dish. Add 2 cups of fresh, washed and diced strawberries to this. Drizzle 2 Tablespoons of maple syrup over this, you may also add dried raisins at this point (adds natural sweetness, rhubarb is tart). In another bowl mix together 2 cups rolled oats, 1/2 cup cane sugar, 2 Tablespoons organic flour. To this add 4-5 Tablespoons of cold butter (cut into large chunks), blend all of these ingredients with a fork or your hands. Spread on top of rhubarb mixture, place in a 350 oven for 45 min to 1 hour. This is delicious served warm on its own or with a spoonful of plain natural organic yogurt. Hope you give these recipes a try, I promise you will not regret it…. In health…. When it is this cool, I always love to make a nice, hearty soup. A great way to make an amazing, satisfying soup is to place 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil in a cooking pot, stir fry all your favorite vegetables, add vegetable broth, bring this to a boil, uncovered for 10 minutes, reduce heat, cover and let it simmer for 1 hour. Once it has cooled off, place it in your food processor and you will have the best cream soup ever. This soup will already be broken down for you, gives your intestines a break and you will have all of the amazing nutrients in your body. So easy and delicious… I am very fortunate to have great rhubarb in my garden. Rhubarb crisp is

Racing at the Cornwall Dirt Raceway Park
Article and photos by by Rick Young of www.rickattheraces.com On Tuesday night, the Cornwall Dirt Raceway Park (the new name for the Kart Track at the Cornwall Motor Speedway) got its 2013 racing season under way. After Mother Nature prevented last week's scheduled opener from taking place, a good crowd of anxious racers were there to commence their summer campaign. In addition to the regular band of Karters and Lawn tractors, a new division was making its debut. For the first time anywhere, dirt racing's latest thing, the V Twin DIRT DEMONS (bottom right) were out on the track. Winning the historic first ever race was local driver Ron Bovin (photo left).

A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands This past weekend didn’t go quite the way I had hoped it would. Rain was the determining factor of the weekend, with Mohawk International Raceway and Cornwall Speedway both falling victim to Mother Nature. Brockville Speedway was able to get their program in, but they had to deal with weather issues as well throughout the evening. The rain from Thursday night lasted well into Friday morning. Brewerton Speedway was one of the first to cancel, and Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park soon followed. My original destination of choice was Mohawk International Raceway, and they too were forced to cancel just before noon on Friday, In fact, virtually every race track throughout the northeast had to cancel, with the exception of tracks located in the western part of Ontario and New York State.
The rain had finally stopped, and Saturday was a better day. Brockville Ontario Speedway was on my schedule, with their regular weekly program, plus the Ford Dingwall Vintage Modified Series. In the Modified division, Lee Gill took home the feature win, making it three different winners after three events. Pat O’Brien finished second, Ryan Arbuthnot had a great run finishing in third place, with Luke Whitteker and Bobby Herrington rounding out the top five. While the Modifieds have had different winners each week, the same cant be said for the Sportsman division as Shane Pecore has had the field covered in all three events this year. He had to come from an 18th place starting spot this week and passed former champions Chris Herbison and Dylan Evoy to get the win. Evoy and Herbison finished second and third respectively, while Bruce Makinson and Steve Barber completed the top five. Other winners on the night include Aaron Pugh in the Rookie Sportsman for the third week, which now moves him into the regular Sportsman class. John Gifford won the Street Stock feature, Bob Ray took home the win in the Rookie class and Pete Stapper was victorious in the Ford Dingwall Vintage Modified division.

SEEKING SPORTS Boxing can be a very confusing sport. Every time I believe I’ve taken a step closer to understanding the sweet science, something new comes up and an explanation is required. This time, it has to do with success and that could mean it becomes more difficult for a boxer to advance their career. Take for instance the fighter who upset Tony Luis on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights earlier this year. Jose Hernandez picked up an 8th Rd TKO on Cornwall’s up and coming Luis. Word in boxing circles is that because of that win (and rightfully so), Hernandez’ asking price has jumped. But he cannot find a dance partner because he’s proven to be a dangerous opponent for other boxers on the rise. That makes him a victim of his own success. Normally, when an athlete proves to be good, the pay days follow but not so much in this case.
And now, back to Luis. He’s reverted back to a lightweight competitor and kick started his comeback with a unanimous decision over Maurycy Gojko on a card at Lac Leamy in Gatineau. Many of Luis’ fans were expecting a short fight considering Luis’ renewed drive. Instead, they were treated to the now 16-1 (7ko’s) boxer getting a taste of experimenting with boxing as a lefty. Luis is attempting what very few, but successful boxers can do and that’s earn the ability to go into the ring either as a righty or a lefty. It’s the next evolution into what continues to be a bright career. Now, it’s up to Tony’s promoters to find him a solid opponent and that’ll likely happen this summer. Stay tuned.
May 26 cancelled, Tripleheader on Sunday at Cornwall Motor Speedway! by Martin Bélanger
Sunday eventually turned out to be a nice day, but all the rain from overnight on Saturday in the Cornwall area and more rain on Sunday forced track officials to cancel their program. They have now revised their schedule once again, with a huge show planned for this Sunday. The 100 lap Canadian Nationals Series event will highlight the program, and will be joined by the already scheduled Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman series race and Mr. DIRTcar/Mohawk Race Parts Pro Stock Series. The Semi Pro and Mini Stock classes will not be on the schedule for June 2nd, but instead will run double features on June 9th. I do have to give a big shout out to Matt Billings and the Billings Motorsports team of Brockville. They have been racing weekly at Canandaigua Motorsports Park this season, and have been impressive over the first few weeks of the season. This past Saturday night, Billings finished with a great second place run, against some of the all time best Modified drivers in the business. This coming weekend, I plan to return to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, Brockville Speedway on Saturday night, and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday. Hopefully Mother Nature will give us a break, and we will have a nice and dry weekend. For those of you attending Brockville Speedway on Saturday night, be sure to stop by the Finish Line Web Design merchandise trailer. We have new stock coming in regularly. You can purchase Finish Line Web Design t-shirts and hats, Steve Barber “Saturday Night Sheriff” t-shirts, Kitley Motorsports t-shirts, Jessica Power t-shirts, as well as t-shirts for Luke Stewart We also have 1:16 scale Model cars including Danny and Pat O’Brien cars, spectacular artwork prints from Donnie Dana’s Doodles, and window decals for many of your favorite BOS drivers. As always, any comments or suggestions can be sent to crevelle@ripnet.com. You can also visit me online at www.finishlinewebdesign.ca, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/crevelle, and on twitter at www.twitter.com/finishlineweb17.
Mother Nature is obviously not a race fan in 2013, wet grounds mixed with cool temperatures forced promoter Ron Morin to cancel his opening night a second week in a row.
The Canadian Nationals Series will be back with a 100-lap feature race involving the the best drivers from Ontario, Quebec and Northeastern United-States. Drivers such as Mario Clair, David Hébert, Steve Bernard, Yan Bussière and many others will try and win the $4,000 purse given to the winner against the best local drivers in the likes of Laurent Ladouceur, Chris Raabe, Joel Doiron, Kyle Dingwall and company. One of the biggest fields of the season is expected. A huge field of Sportsman will be in Cornwall this Sunday as the DIRTcar Sportsman Series will make a stop in Cornwall for a 50-lap Feature event. The best in the business in the Sportsman ranks will haul to the Speedway for round 1 of this coveted series.
Pro-Stock drivers will have two good reasons to be in Cornwall this Sunday as the DIRTcar Pro-Stock Series and Mohawk Race Parts Series will host their initial event of the season. A strong contingent of invaders will drive in Eastern Ontario for this 50-lap race feature. Semi-Pro and Mini-Stock divisions will have a night off, but they will return to action on June 9th will double features!
To see this great night of racing, it will only cost $25 for adults, 15$ for seniors, 2$ for children 18 years and under and to access the pits, it will be $35. Pit gates will open at 3:30pm with general admission opening at 4:30pm. The first heat race is scheduled to start at 7:00pm sharp. We suggest that you arrive early as a great crowd is expected.
For more information on the upcoming season at Cornwall, please visit the website at www.cornwallspeedway.com you can add us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/cornwallspeedway or on twitter at @cornwalspeedway, we will use these for contests over the next few weeks.
