LATEST TIMBIT COMING OUT OF CITY HALL - With $200,000 Cornwall City Council could buy every man, woman and child four donuts each with plenty of Timbits to spare. If you think that is a waste of tax payer dollars, you probably won’t be pleased with the latest boondoggle at City Hall. The City of Cornwall released a full breakdown of the costs associated with two whistleblower complaints dating back to 2012. You can read the full story on theseeker.ca website. CONCERNED CITIZENS ONE DOLLAR OFFER FALLS SHORT - Phase III of the Cornwall Community Hospital Redevelopment Project is well underway with the demolition and renovations necessary to prepare the McConnell Avenue site for the consolidation of all hospital services. This final phase is scheduled for completion by fall 2014, at which time all services and programs will be transferred from the Second Street Site. In preparation for this final phase the Board of Directors at Cornwall Community Hospital listed the properties for sale in an open competitive process. Multiple offers were received and the hospital is proceeding with a potential buyer to satisfy the conditions of the offer. At the same time, in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act, the hospital sought the required Ministry of Health approvals for the sale of the hospital properties. The approvals from the Ministry of Health have now been received by the hospital. “With the Ministry of Health approvals, the hospital and the buyer can now move forward with satisfying the remaining conditions of the Agreement of Purchase and Sale,” stated Helene Periard, Chairperson, Board of Directors. Mrs. Periard also reassured “ the Hospital Board understands and respects the important housing and daily needs of our seniors and appreciates the passion of those seeking to address these needs, however we do not have a mandate or means to redevelop this site.” The Hospital Board recognizes its responsibility and obligations for the provision of acute care services to this community and must move forward with the disposition of the property in order to avoid liabilities. “The details of this Agreement remain confidential, however, we are encouraged by the opportunities that the potential buyer can bring to this site and our community” stated Mrs. Periard. POND INLET OFFICIALS THANK CITY OF CORNWALL FOR DONATION OF ZAMBONI -Officials from the northern community of Pond Inlet visited Cornwall City Hall on Wednesday, June 5th to thank the City for its recent donation of a Zamboni. Mayor Bob Kilger welcomed a delegation that included Pond Inlet Mayor Jaykolassie Killiktee, Senior Administrative Officer Mike Rudkin and Executive Assistant Tina Enookolo. The delegation presented Mayor Kilger with some Certificates of Appreciation and a couple of gifts, including a beautiful narwhal sculpture created from a piece of whale vertebrae.
The unique hand-carved piece was created by a Pond Inlet artist. “I’m stunned by it,” said Mayor Kilger in reaction to the gift. “This is a beautiful gift and it will hold a special place here at City Hall.” In 2012, Cornwall City Council agreed to donate a surplus Zamboni to Pond Inlet after receiving a request from the community through the assistance of Cornwall resident Jean-Paul Paulin. It arrived via ship in early October. Pond Inlet is a community of approximately 1,600 people located on the northeastern tip of Baffin Island in the Territory of Nunavut. “It’s the first Zamboni the community has ever had,” said Mayor Killiktee, speaking through a translator. “We really appreciate the donation.” KIDS RACHEL’S PUTS MONEY WHERE IT COUNTS The Cornwall Community Police in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cornwall / SDG After School Program at Central Public School has successfully completed the Junior Constable Program. With the direction of Cst. Jason Mines, the Junior Constable Program is designed to be fun, interactive and educational while fostering positive interaction with police. Off-duty officers attended the After-School Program twice a month during this past school year to participate in sports activities and also for the youth to learn about policing and the tools available to various departments within the Cornwall Community Police Service. The youth had hands-on access to different areas of policing tools such as speed radar, fingerprinting equipment, handcuffing, physical training and bicycle safety just to name a few. The Graduation ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 28th, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. at Central Public School Library. All Junior Constables were issued honorary police badges and certificates in presence of their parents, Chief of Police Daniel Parkinson, and executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG Jacquie Richards. CORNWALL TRANSIT ENJOYS BIG INCREASE IN RIDERSHIP FOR CLEAN AIR DAY - Cornwall Transit experienced a big jump in ridership on Wednesday, June 5th as thousands of residents took advantage of the free ride promotion being offered in celebration of Clean Air Day. A total of 5,814 passengers boarded buses on Clean Air Day, much to the delight of Cornwall Transit officials. By comparison, the average daily ridership for the three previous workdays was 2,806. “The goal of the promotion is to get more people on our buses to experience the benefits of using public transit, and we achieved that in a big way,” said Len Tapp, Transit Manager. The free ride promotion for Clean Air Day was initiated in 2007 and it has continued to grow in popularity with each passing year. This year’s turnout was just shy of the record 6,045 passenger boardings during last year’s Clean Air Day event. GLEN STOR DUN LODGE RECOGNIZES VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Thérèse Brisebois’ commitment to volunteering extends over five decades. It began in the mid-1970s as she started visiting residents at the Bestview Nursing Home (now Heartwood) where her father resided, and it continues today in a number of locations, including the Glen Stor Dun Lodge. Mrs. Brisebois’ long record of volunteer service was recently recognized as she was awarded the Frances Lafave Award for volunteer of the year at the annual
Brisebois has made a tremendous contribution to the Lodge, and the residents and staff are grateful for her efforts,” said Norm Quenneville, Administrator.

MP Guy Lauzon says Canada Post is at a pivotal moment in its history
addresses than it was in 2007. From 2006 to 2012 letter mail in Canada reduced from 5 billion pieces to 4 billion. Canadians mailed 255 million fewer pieces of mail in 2012 than they did in 2011.
MP Guy Lauzon writes: Canada Post is at a pivotal moment in its history. The combination of fast internet and smart tablets has shaken the mail business at its very core. Letter mail began to slow down in 2007 and has declined steadily, accounting for only 51% of Canada Post’s revenue. Further, only 200 of Canada Post`s top customers account for 45% of its revenue.
All these reductions have resulted in huge financial losses for Canada Post. In 2011, for the first time in 17 years, Canada Post failed to earn a profit and reported a loss of $327 million before taxes. They expect a substantial financial loss in fiscal year 2013. The Conference Board of Canada projects annual operating deficits of close to $1 billion by 2020.
If Canadians are to have a postal service in the future, Canada Post has to take some major decisions on how to address these issues going forward. After studying the problem and consulting Canadians, the Conference Board of Canada developed some options for Canada Post to consider. They are; converting door to door delivery to community mailboxes, price increases, wage restraints, reduced speed of delivery, alternate day delivery and more replacement of regular post policy costs. Electricity rates have almost offices with franchised postal outlets. tripled since the Liberals came to power, now Canada Post is looking for your feedback on these the highest in North America, and are forecast options and I believe it is important that constituents to increase another 45% over the next five of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry have input, years. To make matters worse, the 3% power generated by wind and solar, has required that we spill water over our dams to lower our hydro power by the same 3%.
Canadians mailed almost one billion fewer letters in 2012 than they did in 2006. Almost half of Canadian households send only two pieces of mail or less each month. Although the number of pieces of mail delivered to each address is decreasing dramatically each year, the number of addresses to be serviced grows steadily each year. MPP Jim McDonell finds Liberal record appalling MPP Jim McDonell writes: Last week, Ann Cavoukian, Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner reported back to the Legislature on her investigation into the release of information on the power plant cancellations. She was requested by the opposition to look into the situation when the documents ordered released by the Speaker were heavily redacted and clearly incomplete or missing altogether. She commented: “The fact that you’re just wiping it all away indiscriminately is just appalling. Obviously, it reflects a culture of no accountability because you’re retaining nothing.” A Government that would so blatantly ignore its duty to be transparent to its own people as to warrant such stern condemnation from a respected and independent officer of the Legislature is unworthy of our great Province. The power plant cancellation fiasco is just the latest in this government’s record of waste, spin and deception, designed to keep them in power at any cost and the people of Ontario in the dark. In his 2011 report on the Green Energy Act, the Auditor-General identified billions of dollars wasted on the Liberals’ failed flagship policy without any prior comprehensive evaluation on the impact of the billion dollar commitment on the future electricity prices and the corresponding job losses. He went on to say that the government had a responsibility to let the people of Ontario know just what this
We met the same attitude of concealment and denial in our investigations into the ORNGE scandal, where hundreds of millions of taxpayer’s dollars were used to set up over a dozen private for-profit companies owned by ORNGE’s Board of Directors. The AuditorGeneral has reported being blocked from getting information during his investigation. This kind of obstruction of independent investigations is just not acceptable in a free and democratic society. This Liberal Government has run out of excuses and the OPP are knocking at the door of the Premier’s Office. With over 500,000 people looking for work and over 300,000 lost manufacturing jobs lost in this province, it’s time for a change in leadership to a transparent and accountable Government that would put jobs and growth first.

Good question and one I deal with on a regular basis. Should you sell your home before purchasing a new one and then risk not having one come closing date? Or do you purchase a new one before your current home sells and potentially have to carry two mortgages? Should I purchase my new home before I sell my current one? Ok, so here is the scenario, you find a great house and decide you want it to be your future home. You put in an offer to purchase and it gets accepted, there is a lot of activity on the property so you waive your conditions quickly and now you are committed to that sale. Two months down the road and your closing date is around the corner but your current home hasn’t sold, so in two days you will be the proud owner of 2 houses and be stuck with 2 mortgage payments. Ok, that sounds awful so I should sell my home before I buy my new one? Let’s look at this. Your home is cleaned and properly staged; your Real Estate Agent did their homework so the home is competitively priced. First week on the market you have 12 showings and have generated an offer, which you accept and a week later your house is sold. Congrats! Now you need to find a new home in the next month and a half before you no longer own yours. One of two things will happen here, either you don’t find one in time and have to move in with your in-laws until you do or possibly worse (probably not) you have to settle on a home that you are not crazy about but is the only thing close to what you need that is presently available. Just tell me what to do! Here is the reality, this happens all the time when buying or selling a home but it’s all in the planning that makes the difference. What I suggest to clients is this; list your current house but make it clear to Buyers that any offers coming in must be conditional on the Seller finding a new property. This way you do not miss out on a busy market and can entertain offers while you search for a new home. When you get an accepted offer it gives you the time to find a new one. On the flip side you do not need to have an offer on your current home to find a new one. If you find a house that you love and want to submit an offer without having one on yours, have your Agent make that offer conditional on yours selling. This way you can tie up your new place temporarily while you sell the current one. Remember… It is important to keep in mind that every situation is different. Your professional licensed Real Estate Agent will be able to provide you with valuable information and advice in this area to make sure you are not left without a home or stuck with too many. Should I Sell my Home Before I Buy a New One or Buy Before I Sell?
Quality Time with Mom & Dad In the midst of several convocation celebrations, I was able to set aside time to visit with my family. After staying in residence on the night before convocation, I extended my visit and spent the extra night at my parents’ home last weekend. Friday night was more of a decompression after a long week and a chance to warm up after a very cold week. I almost forgot how much my mom enjoys watching the news, something I did not inherit, but the clicker control; yes I have that down pat. My younger sister stopped by and we enjoyed a cooler, I think that was a first. The next morning I requested we indulge in something I have not done in a long time; go to yard sales and basically spend the day with them.
We were up early, and after staying in the spare bed, or as I dub it, Ella’s bed, a comfy bed that makes me feel like I am sleeping on a cloud, as does the angels and religious statues that surround the room. We were up early and my dad went on a Tim Hortons’ run for us. After scoping out list of sales in the Seeker, we were off. It was a cool and dreary day so expectations were not high, but we did find a few treasures, and saw several familiar faces in our travels. What made it so special was the time I spent with my mom and dad.
I think something happened since I moved away; I have always been close with my parents, but since there is now a distance and the visits are not as frequent, I don’t take them for granted as maybe I used to. It was nice to be the passenger and they pointed out some of the changes that have happened since I left town. My dad is a patient man and took my mom and me everywhere we wanted to go. I do feel bad that I will not be home for Father’s Day this weekend, since if any dad deserves accolades it is mine. He will do just about anything for his girls and that includes my sisters, my nieces and of course my mom who is always will be the love of his life. Although he never had any boys, he certainly has been a fatherfigure to my son and my nephew. Even though I can’t be there, I left a gift with my mom that she will give him on Sunday. I have another weekend of convocation celebrations and some catching up to do, since I have been away a lot lately, so a trip on Sunday is not feasible, but he will be in my thoughts and is always is my heart. Maybe it took some distance and some maturity to see what real gems I have for parents. I always appreciated them, but the distance shows me how much I really do. We have never really been the touchy-feely kind, but every time I am in town now, I do not leave without a hug and kiss on the cheek from both of them. I truly enjoyed spending time with them and give thanks for them each day. In honour of Father’s Day, I reflect on the song by George Strait “The Breath Take” cause life’s not the breaths you take, it is the moments that take your breath away”, and I know for my dad it has always been the time he spends with us. He taught us the importance of family and how to always be there for our children. Even though he didn’t have a boy to carry on his name, I did return to my maiden name and wear it proudly. Happy Father’s Day to my dad, Ernie! Cheers to all the dads and father-figures. Remember someone is watching you and emulating you and giving thanks for you.

positive feelings (such as alertness and enthusiasm), fewer negative feelings (reduced excitability, anxiety, and aggressiveness) and somatic complaints. Many studies conclude that yoga is associated with a wide range of physical and psychological benefits that may be especially helpful for persons living with a chronic illness.
Yoga for Arthritis: Keep moving to manage the pain Arthritis (‘arth’ meaning joint, ‘itis’ meaning inflammation) is the name for a group of more than 100 autoimmune disorders that involves the joints and the tissues surrounding them. Arthritis can affect people of all ages and is a very common condition. Typically, arthritis affects the joints but it also can affect the immune system and various internal organs. Arthritis may range from a simple tendonitis in one of the joints to more systemic, debilitating forms, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia.
Those who live with arthritis may find it difficult to move around and may lack the energy to participate in a regular program of exercise. However, a regular exercise program is exactly what is required to manage the disease. You see, the joints produce a fluid called the synovial fluid, which provides the lubrication, nutrients and oxygen the joints need in order to be able to move through their natural range of motion. In order to continue to produce this fluid, the joints need to be moved on a regular basis. When we stop moving, the joints will begin to stop producing synovial fluid. Many studies have demonstrated that yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity and that yoga also has important psychological benefits due to its meditative nature. As with other forms of exercise, yoga can increase muscle strength, improve flexibility, enhance respiratory endurance, and promote balance. Yoga is also associated with increased energy and fewer bodily aches and pains. Finally, yoga is associated with increased mental energy as well as
THE SEEKER (June 14 - pg. 12)
Additionally, physical activity is an essential part of the effective treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to treatment guidelines published by the American College of Rheumatology. Perhaps most importantly, yoga has an important positive effect on quality of life. People with arthritis may also enjoy yoga more than traditional forms of exercise, and exercise enjoyment is an important predictor of adherence. This is particularly important considering that, on average, half of sedentary individuals will drop out of exercise within 6 months. The following is an excerpt from a scientific review by Stephanie Haas for the John Hopkins Center for Arthritis: yoga can be a meaningful and enjoyable alternative to traditional forms of exercise such as aerobics or aquatic exercise with important health benefits. Yoga can play an important role in reducing stress and frustration that results from pain and disability, and increasing positive feelings and wellbeing. Drug treatments for OA and RA have improved markedly in the last few years. Despite this, arthritis cannot be cured, and even the best medications and medical care can only help so much. There is a great need for additional activities patients can do to reduce pain, disability, and take control of the overall impact arthritis may have on their lives. Thus, the evidence suggests that, when combined with a program of good medical care, yoga may provide important additional physical and psychological health benefits for arthritis patients”. Spirit Tree Yoga offers a number of Gentle Yoga classes that are ideal for those who suffer from any of the many forms of arthritis. Art and the Power of the Spoken Word
by Sandra Taylor Hedges
POSTCARDS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BRAIN
SEEKING THE ARTS • SEEKING THE ARTS This week was the unveiling of the project started last fall between the local Writers and Poets and the Visual Artists in the area. Anonymous Haiku poems were created and then handed out to the visual Artists to create a painting based on what the poem inspired them to produce. This was difficult because we had only a few words and no idea of the person behind the words. I originally thought this would be easy but soon found it one of the most challenging pieces I have painted. This idea of words and Art started me thinking about the power of words we use every day to not only describe our situation but often to describe ourselves. It has long been an accepted fact that the words you use have a direct affect on how you perceive the world around you. For example if I child is told that they are stupid and will amount to nothing the odds are that they will begin to believe that fact to be true and their life will reflect it. Of course there are the small few who will take that negative talk and try to disprove it, but deep inside they are fighting with deep insecurities. On the flip side when I child is praised and encouraged they will feel like they can try and accomplish anything. The same thing applies when you reach adulthood. Just because you didn’t receive positive talk about yourself and your art career in the past doesn’t mean that can’t change now but it begins with our own self talk. We as Artists need to be careful about the language we use to describe ourselves, the term “Starving Artist” is one we are all guilty of using from time to time. I remember myself often describing myself as a starving artist in a joking way until one
very smart friend of mine pointed out that I was attracting that reality. Now I am careful to describe myself as a successful self employed Artist and Teacher. We also need to watch that we are not using negative talk in a more subtle way for example when admiring the work of another Artist we should watch out for phrases like “I will never be that good” or “Compared to that Artist, my work sucks”. These words when repeated often enough will lower your self esteem and block your creative flow. Creative flow is dependent on positive re-enforcement. Creative flow needs your positive self talk to keep it going. When you start a project make sure you are telling yourself that you can do it, that you can see the vision and it’s a good one. This doesn’t mean that you won’t hit problems or change your end result but remember to keep your own self talk positive and when things start to go wrong just remind yourself how good you are and that you can solve this problem. Remember you are brilliant! You can be a success; no matter what your family told you; no matter if the odds are against you; no matter what others are accomplishing you and only you can truly tell yourself that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Watch the words you use to describe yourself! Watch yourself if you start making too much Negative talk and switch it up to Positive talk. Be positive about whom you are and what you do and the Art you make because believe me there are plenty of people that will be more than happy to tell you the negative side of our business. Remember at least once a day to tell yourself that you are Brilliant! PS - Check out the Haiku and Art show at the Library this month. FINANCIALLY SPEAKING with Brian Seguin
Retirement, Succession Plans: "Must Haves" for Business Owners If you own a business, you may well follow a “do it now” philosophy — which is, of course, necessary to keep things running smoothly. Still, you also need to think about tomorrow — which means you’ll want to take action on your own retirement and business succession plans. Fortunately, you’ve got some attractive options in these areas. For example, you could choose a retirement plan that offers at least two key advantages: potential tax-deferred earnings and a wide array of investment options. Plus, some retirement plans allow you to make tax-deductible contributions. In selecting a retirement plan, you’ll need to consider several factors, including the size of your business and the number of employees. If you are looking to create a retirement plan for yourself, (and your spouse, if employed by the business), you may wish to consider an Individual Pension Plan (IPP). If you would like to set up a plan for your employees as well, you might want to investigate a group RRSP or Defined Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP). Your financial advisor, working with plan design professionals and your tax advisor, can help you analyze the options and choose the plan that fits with your combined personal and business goals.
interests. To provide the funds needed for the partner or employee (or even one of your children) to purchase the business, an insurance policy could be purchased. Your estate plan — including your will and any living trust — should address what happens with the business, in case you still own part or all of it at your death. The best-laid succession plans may go awry if the unexpected occurs. All these business succession options can be complex, so before choosing any of them, you will need to consult with your legal and financial advisors. Whether it’s selecting a retirement plan or a succession strategy, you’ll want to take your time and make the choices that are appropriate for your individual situation. You work extremely hard to run your business — so do whatever it takes to help maximize your benefits from it. Insurance and annuities are offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (except in Québec). Now, let’s turn to business succession plans. Ultimately, your choice of a succession plan strategy will depend on many factors, such as the value of your business, your need for the proceeds from the sale of the business for your retirement, your successor, and how well your business can continue without you. If your goal is to keep the business within the family, you’ll need to consider how much control you wish to retain (and for how long), whether you wish to gift or sell, how you balance your estate among your heirs, and who can reasonably succeed you in running the business. Many succession planning techniques are available, including an outright sale to a third party, a sale to your employees or management (at once or over time), or the transfer of your business within your family through sales or gifts during your life, at your death or any combination thereof.
PASSION for FASHION by Marlene Baker
Many succession plans include a buy-sell agreement. Upon your death, such an agreement could allow a business partner or a key employee to buy the business from your surviving spouse or whoever inherits your business
A warm hello to everyone who is reading Passion For Fashion this week! Mother Nature isn't playing fair with this unfavorable weather, but just think of all the flora and fauna that will florish because of all this rain. It is needed to enable their growth and beauty to shine for us to enjoy. Now come on summer weather! We're waiting... I had the privilege to go to a two hour dance recital last Wednesday evening at General Vanier H.S. It was a compilation of the work from many different dance schools, who were putting together their year end recital. There were many young women and a few young men showcasing their dance moves and choregraphy skills. It was a delight to see them shining throughout their performances. Well Done Everyone! And a special thank you to the talented teachers and staff that made this evening possible. This week I want to chat about my favorite things: SHOES! Shoes are what gets us ladies around, in style or not...They are what keep our feet comfortable or not, your choice! You must get the shoes that fit your life style, or not! To some of us women/girls, shoes can mean everything. They

make us feel good and look good! When we look good, we can be walking on Cloud 9 all day. One of my photography clients just purchased shoes for her wedding. She paid $200 for them. She tells me that her husband might not understand, but, I do! We women do!!! A bride must feel at her very best to walk down that aisle. She's even taking my advice of breaking them in pre-wearing them before her BIG DAY. You can go and purchase your affordable shoes/sandals right now at the thrift stores here in Cornwall. The Agape Center, the Salvation Army, and Value Village are are all stocked up and waiting for you to choose your "footywear" for this year's Spring/Summer season. By doing so, you are helping them help others in our community that are less fortunate. Thank you from me in advance. This is the Seeker's last week before the Make Over Contest ends. You still have a Chance to send in your reason for wanting this make over for yourselves. Good Luck to Everyone. Stay tuned next week when we the "Seeker Chicks" & I reveal the name of the BIG WINNER!!! A Smile is a curve that sets everything straight. Pass One On...:D

My son had a sore throat upon awakening last Sunday morning….with this crazy weather many people are not feeling that great! Using my Nutribullet, I whipped up a quick and easy, soothing drink. I placed 1 large orange (skin removed), ½ a lemon (rind removed), small piece of ginger (skin removed), 1 TBSP honey and 1 tsp cinnamon, water to the line. It is so delicious, just like they used to make at Orange Julius. Funny thing I have not heard him cough since. Nature is thy medicine, give it a try, you will feel better in no time!!
Here is one of my favorite ,quick raw recipe for you, no bake, now you have to like that?? RAW CARROT CAKE CUPCAKE 1 TBSP cinnamon 2 ½ cups carrots ½ tsp. Sea salt 1 cup walnuts 1 tsp. vanilla 12-15 Medjool dates (pitted) ½ inch ginger Instructions -In food processor grate carrots to equal 2 ½ cups. Add in remaining ingredients. Pulse/blend until mixed together and somewhat “sticky”. Once finished mold and pat into cupcake liners to create their shape. Place in refrigerator for 2 hours for the cupcakes to take shape. I often choose to eat it with a spoon…so delicious!! I prefer to use small cupcake liners (it gives me more). You may choose to spread this amazing frosting on top of your cupcakes (once they have set in the refrigerator) for an extra special occasion.

Thanks to all of you for showing us that this is a great part of your week-end!!! I love seeing all the young families that are coming with their children, I always have samples and the kids really enjoy that, their smiles make my day!!!!
Watch out for the Blitz! I know, I know. You are expecting a review of Star Trek, or Gatsby, or Pain & Gain. It’s been a busy week, and I haven’t had a chance to see all or write the reviews. It’s not often I write a review about an actor, however I saw 3 different films in the last week and was shocked by the level of acting of one of the actors. His name is Aiden Gillen. (Remember Queer as Folk?) I watched Batman: Dark Knight Rises (2012) the other night and I love the cocky CIA agent at the beginning of the film, and I wondered where I had seen the actor before. A few nights later I watched Blitz (2011) starring Jason Statham as a hard hitting, chauvinistic London inspector, who works a case of cop killer played by Aiden Gillen. Really enjoyed his character (not a kid friendly movie obviously) and the persona that Gillen brings to the screen.
For you Game of Thrones lovers, he’s Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish as well. Then I was looking for a movie that my kids might enjoy, and they liked Shanghai Noon so much I thought they might enjoy Shanghai Knights. And low and behold Gillen plays Lord Rathbone, the main villain, and England’s greatest swordsman! The triple play was enough for me to write about it. Talented, versatile, non-A-list actor. Blitz was a smart British film. I love British movies that show us life in the UK, and we westerners watch and say “what the heck is that thing on the wall – water heaters?” or “why are these tough cops having tea and toast?” [sidebar – I am a huge tea drinker…come to think of it I like toast too!] If you like Statham in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) or Snatch (2000) then you’ll enjoy Blitz. Of course if you liked those movies, you’re probably a Guy Ritchie fan as well. Gillen also played Mayor Carcetti in TV’s the Wire. He plays a fantastic American for a Irish born actor. I’m not one who usually watches something because of an actor, however I found myself searching for anything with Aidan Gillen in it, and will probably go back a watch the wire…in my spare time! I promise to give you my review of Star Trek Darkness Falls for issue 18 of Reel Fish Stories. Until then, go rent Blitz. (Or watch it online) Dust off Shanghai Knights and give Aidan Gillen some time. You won’t be disappointed!
Cashew vanilla orange frosting 1 ½ cups raw cashews (soaked 1 to 3 hours) 6-8 Medjool dates (pitted) 6-8 oz fresh orange juice (2 – 3 oranges in juicer) ¼ tsp. Sea salt Instructions -Place all ingredients in blender, blend on high until creamy. Spread generously on top of your cupcakes. *Next week I will give you different raw ice cream recipes…easy and delicious…impress your guests* Enjoy!!! In health…. In a coaching session recently with one of my clients, we discussed her future. After retiring three years ago and taking time to consider her options for the rest of her life, she was now prepared to look at what’s next. As with many of my clients, when the conversation begins, there is a lot of spinning, considering the endless possibilities. Clarity can be elusive. This is where coaching comes in, the opportunity to narrow the field and to identify what it is that really ‘lights’ you up. Following our conversation, my client left for another meeting. I reminded her to watch for the SIGNS. Later that day I received an e-mail from her with the following, “I left your place remembering what you said. When I walked I to my next appointment, I saw this sign, “The Beginning is Near”. Now isn’t that a roadSIGN!” I loved it. That is how it works. The Universe is always on your side, feeding you information constantly. The question is, are you paying attention. My client that day was on high alert, swimming in the conversation of what she wants to attract and create in her life. The message The Beginning is Near seemed so appropriate.
SIGN Spotting SIGNS for me have always represented those Significant Insightful Gold Nuggets informing my Spirit. SIGNS may not be actual signs as my client experienced; they show up in many forms from an interview on the radio, a morning horoscope, a message from a friend, a posting of Facebook, something or someone crossing your path. Life is full of meaning; we are unfortunately, for the most part, oblivious to what is there. SIGN spotting requires living consciously, getting away from living life on autopilot which most of us do, and becoming more mindful and aware of what is going on around us. This is a challenge in the fast paced world we live is so yes, it does mean slowing down a bit, noticing more, asking more questions, reflection and sometimes, simply breathing. Look at it this way. Your life and manifesting what it is you want, is the most significant project you will ever take on. As with any project, it needs to be planned. You need to determine what it is that you desire as you look down the road. We call these intentions, naming what you want. Again, as with any project, you require data. This is where SIGNS come in – the angel whispers offered to you by Source, or the Universe, whatever you call you higher power, telling you whether or not you are on the right path, giving you support and encouragement, confirming the path you have chosen, and occasionally challenging you to change directions. Heavenly Faxes My friend Larry Snow in Colorado calls his SIGNS heavenly faxes and because Colorado has a lot of personalized license plates, cars are his typical SIGN spotting opportunity. After divorcing his wife of seventeen years, and then through therapy giving himself time to heal, Larry found himself attracted to another woman. He was however, reticent to get involved even though he knew that Margie was special and potentially the one. As he considered the past, he found himself behind a green mustang with the license plate LET GO. As Larry said, this caused him to chuckle. A few days later as he was considering his nest steps with Largie, he pulls up behind a Nebraska car with the plate 1 TO GO 4.

There was no turning back, the SIGNS in his life were definitely feeding him data. The final SIGN happened a few weeks later, when Larry again hesitated. In his words, “As I looked left before merging into the morning rush-hour traffic, I noticed a blue Volvo cresting the hill on South Wadsworth Boulevard — beneath the snowcapped mountain backdrop its green vanity plate stated simply and succinctly: MARGIE.”
I recently heard on CBC Radio that we can expect to have a bumper crop of strawberries this year, due to the amount of rain we have had recently. I would presume that there will be lots of wild berries out there as well, ready for picking. In the past, our not so affluent ancestors knew how to survive, and knew how to add variety to their diets by picking wild fruits. This reminds me of my father-in-law, now deceased. I could refer to him as the “mad picker”. He developed an obsession every year, starting out in the month of June. He knew where the best spots were. He knew the best time of day when the black flies, mosquitos and deer flies were at a minimum. For picking, he dressed in long pants and a long shirt, with a bug hat, and rubber boots or old shoes. He brought home buckets of berries, to the delight of his wife, my mother-in-law, who, raised north of Lake Superior, was adept at creating mouth-watering preserves, jams and jellies, even after moving to the city. His specialties were raspberries picked along the cottage road, cranberries picked on lowland bogs and rocky islands near the Key River, and blueberries wherever he could find them.
Raspberries grow in abundance in our area, but when picking, be prepared for the very sharp thorns on the stalks. Did you know that the Hawthorn tree, with it’s “haws” make delicious jelly? I did not, until a friend brought over a jar for me. And don’t forget currants, blackberries, gooseberries, wild cherries, chokecherries, mulberries and dewberries. Just look in a basic cookbook such as the “Fanny Farmer Cookbook” and you will see recipes for all kinds of jams, jellies, chutneys, and sauces using these fruits. Or, eat the berries on cereal or in fruit salad. What a welcoming change this can be from our over processed supermarket foods! There is something very satisfying about picking the food ourselves, and then seeing newly preserved jars of jam or jelly on your kitchen counter. Then, finally, comes the popping sound of the jars sealing themselves!

SEEKING SPORTS A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands The recent bout of heavy rain that has caused havoc throughout the previous week, made for some wild racing on the weekend at area tracks. My plans were to attend Can Am Motorsports Park on Friday night and on to Brockville Speedway night for the rescheduled Ogilvie’s Auto Triple Crown Modified and Sportsman Series races on Saturday night and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday as they made their fourth attempt to get the 2013 season underway.

SEEKING SPORTS Last Sunday, on its fourth attempt, the Cornwall Motor Speedway finally got it's 2013 racing season underway. Article and photos by Rick Young www.rickattheraces.com
Following the rain out cancellations of the past few weeks, starved fans and race teams were hungry for some action. The speedway was packed to overflowing, as a record breaking 156 race cars booked in to race. It made parking in the pits a challenge, but after a slightly later start, the races began. Extra cars meant extra races, and the show turned into a great spectacle of auto racing. Big winners were Stephane Lafrance (Modifieds) Chris Herbison (Sportsman) Dave Bissonnette (Pro Stock) Paul Klager (Mod Lites). Nicolas Geuvreau (Semi Pro) and Joel Pilon (Minstocks)
With heavy rain falling on Thursday night, and continuing into Friday, it was clear that there would be no racing anywhere in the region. Brewerton Speedway had cancelled Friday’s program on Thursday evening, and Mohawk Raceway, Can Am and several other soon followed suit. Mohawk Raceway had the Empire Super Sprints scheduled, and a make up date is expected to be announced later this week.
Saturday was a much better day, but the rain from the previous couple days was still a big problem for the tracks. Brockville Speedway continued on though after a lot of hard work getting the track ready to race on. To make matters worse, another rain shower crept into the area as race teams began to arrive, but the show continued on. Lee Gill was the Modified feature winner for the second consecutive week as he held off a late race charge from Bobby Herrington. Danny O’Brien, Luke Whitteker and Mario Clair rounded out the top five. Several cars were involved in a lap six red flag that ended the night for many drivers. In the Sportsman main event, Chris Herbison finally put his early season bad luck behind him with his first win of the season over Steve Bernier, Jonathan Ferguson, Jon Mills and Shane Pecore. Other winners on the night included Paul Klager in the visiting Mod Lite Series, Tristan Draper in the Rookie Sportsman, Nicholas Gauvreau in the Street Stocks and Quincy Roberts in the Rookie division. Cornwall Speedway was the next stop on my weekly schedule. After getting rained out the first three weeks, many teams were antsy to get the season started. Despite the over saturated track from all the rain over the past few weeks, the show went on. A new record for cars in the pits was set with 156 different racing machines filling the pit area, and overflowing onto the infield of the track. It was a wild night to say the least as several cars had heavy damage in many classes. Stephane Lafrance was the Modified feature winner, with Luke Whitteker, Laurent Ladouceur, Mario Clair and Chris Raabe rounded out the top five. Chris Herbison completed the weekend sweep of the Sportsman division at Cornwall with an impressive performance. He crossed the finish line ahead of Corey Wheeler, Mathieu Boisvert, Joey Ladouceur and Jason Shipclark. Other winners on the night included Paul Klager in the Mod Lites, Dave Bissonnette in the Pro Stock class, Nicholas Gauvreau once again in the Semi Pro Division and Joel Pilon in the Mini Stocks. In other action around the area, Evans Mills Speedway hosted their first ever Asphalt Assault on Saturday night with the invasion of the Empire Super Sprints. Kevin Ward Jr. was the inaugural race winner, ahead of Doug Emery, Matt Tanner, Corey Sparks and Jeff Cook. Bill Gill won the Modified feature over Jordan McCreadie and Lance Willix.
