This Week in THE SEEKER

It’s That Wonderful Time Of The Year ... From a small show back 2003 at the Ramada Inn featuring just over a dozen vendors (including Floral Expressions seen to the left) and a small fashion show runway, Cornwall & Area Bridal Show is now in its 12th successful year and has grown to feature more than 45 exhibitors. The Show is held yearly at the Cornwall Civic Complex and features products and services from local area companies who strive to help brides-to-be plan their dream wedding. This year's Show, being held from 12:30 to 4:30 on February 9th, boasts a wide variety of exhibitors showcasing services such as photography, flowers, music/DJ, decorations, wedding invitations, wedding gowns and limousine service, just to name a few. Future brides can attend for FREE by registering for their invitation. The Show will also open its doors to the general public this year for the first time hoping to attract a larger crowd. There will be many door prizes for both brides & guests and something to see for everyone. The exhibitors not only showcase their products/services to brides but many offer services for any occasion or event. Carol Grant (pictured above) has been the key organizer for the past 12 years. If you would like to register for your FREE invitation as a bride-to-be or if you would like more information, please visit the Facebook page or contact Carol by phone at 613-932-0935 or by email at carolgrantproductions@hotmail.com

THE SEEKER TEAM

From the Desk of the Editor

Location, Location, Location...

There is an old saying in the real estate world that says that most of how well you will do in business lies on exactly where you will do business. Over the years, I have met a lot of business people, some good, some bad, but this week, I met a clever young entrepreneur.

His business? Begging for money. His location? The local East End No Frills.

As you know, when you grab a basket at No Frills, you need to pay a deposit. This deposit used to be a reasonable $0.25, but now, it's gone up to a hefty looney, which doesn't really matter because in the end, you get your looney back. Or do you?

Our clever business man--let's name him Joe for the purpose of this article--can be found outside the No Frills, day in, day out, standing right besides the carts. After someone returns the said cart, he moves in and asks "Would you happen to have any change?" There is no point in lying. Joe knows you have a looney, he's done his research and from the looks of the bags you are carrying out, Joe also knows that you can most likely spare it. Joe banks on that. He also banks on the fact that it is darn cold outside.

The morale of the story? There is no stupid business. Anybody can achieve success! Find a location (no frills), find a need (in this case, feeling like you're doing good or at least not feeling like a jerk), target your market (people who have a looney to spare) and go for the jugular (get them to give it to you)! That is the basic of business.

Chamber Frustrated By Lack of Answers on Storage Tanks The Cornwall Chamber and its partners, the W a t e r f r o n t Committee, Groupe Renaissance, and Le Village BIA, are upset with the lack of government response to the storage tank issue. “Once alerted to the situation, the partners quickly took action,” reports Kevin Hargreaves, Chamber President who spoke on their behalf. “We began by staging a peaceful protest at the site on December 9th with well over 100 people taking part. Two days later, we held a public forum with a senior staff member from the Ministry of Transport, and other government officials in attendance.” On December 18th, the Chamber and its partners sent a letter to Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq with copies to Transport Minister Raitt, MP Guy Lauzon, and several other government Ministers and officials. During the December 11th forum, the partners circulated a petition that members of the public in attendance signed. Copies of the petition were delivered to MP Lauzon on January 13 and the partners are awaiting his response. January 14th saw a meeting held with a Ministry of Transport official and Mayor Kilger at which Chuck Charlebois who has taken a leadership role on the issue and is a spokesperson for the partners, attended. A second meeting was held January 18th with an additional one scheduled for January 24th. Cornwall Transit introduces new railway crossing policy for buses - Beginning on February 3rd, Cornwall Transit buses will be stopping at railway crossings while in service throughout the community. The new policy stems from a review of protocols following the September 2013 bus-train crash in Ottawa that claimed six lives. Many

public transit operators in Ontario h a v e decided to change t h e i r railway crossing policy as a result of the unfortunate incident. “This is an additional measure to ensure the safety of our passengers, our employees and the community at large,” said Len Tapp, Transit Division Manager. “We understand there will be an educational process for other users of the road, and we want to ask for the public’s patience and understanding while this new measure is rolled out.” White and red decals will be placed on the back of Cornwall Transit buses to warn other road users that the bus stops at railway crossings. “As always, the feedback from employees and the public will be assessed and we will review the policy if and when necessary,” said Mr. Tapp.

Wherever I may roam by April Lea Chaffee

A LABOR OF LOVE “Theatre is a family, because when you’re on stage it’s a lot of trust, everyone counts on each other just like a family does, so we have a special place in our hearts for our theatre family.” (Cathy Durham, director of upcoming play Moon over Buffalo) There is a special bond between the actors that flourish as they work together. Working on a project with family members, like a presentation or production, can only bring everyone closer together. In the cast and crew of Les Miserables. there are a number of family groupings. Some are husbands and wives, others are mothers and daughters. Two biological sisters actually have a fight scene together and their mother, Durham, said it reminded her of their childhood. But the whole cast and crew feel as though it’s a family in itself. The cast is made out of 56 performers, an even split between male and female who range from 10 to 70 years old. With only a handful of leading roles to fill, it was hard to chose amongst the many talents who are part of the choir. However, everyone seems happy with the role they landed. One of the female performers who place a factory worker said that she got exactly the part she wanted.

Some of the cast and crew are returning from previous shows and some are new. It takes about 150 volunteers to work on the show, on stage and behind

the scenes. Many of those people help behind the scenes; poster creator, and distribution, advertisement, interviews, lights, techies, and so many others that aren’t really noticed during presentation. There are also 13 musicians in the pit for this production. Cast and crew come from all over Cornwall and area, including talent from Bainville, Monkland, Martin town, Ingleside, and Embrun. They travel miles and miles to attend three meetings a week for rehearsal. Dave Barnes, The director of Les Miserables stated, “it’s been every bit as challenging as expected, I’m delighted with what’s come out, (we are) on track and looking good. Beautiful combination of really lovely melodies and lyrics, and stirring music, and comedy music. The theme is black and dark, we’ve worked really hard to bring in comedy moments and bright moments, to suit a larger audience,” following in the footsteps of others who have presented the show for today’s people. It’s sure to make you laugh, and put you in tears just as it’s meant to do.

Les Miserables will be showing

The original play was 3 and a half hours long, they’ve shortened it without losing any of the essence of the Les Miserables show. They’ve created some unique scenes, and utilised scenes from the original show. I was also informed that they’ve changed the end slightly, but Barnes refuses to tell anyone how it was changed, to keep it a surprise. “It’s very very exciting, in many shows you get excited through the middle, then it’s getting onto the show properly, you can’t lose that with this, (and) the excitement is definitely still there.” I also interviewed Christiane Taylor and Lise Richer who are the Co-Producers of Les Miserables. Their job is to take care of everything that is not on stage such as the production teams, costumes, props, sounds lights, costume director stage director.

from February 7, 2014 - February 15, 2014 at Aultsville Theatre Tickets available at:

• Cornwall Civic Complex Box Office Business hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30am-4:30pm 100 Water St. East Cornwall, ON (613) 938-9400

I wanted to further understand how such a big play comes to life. Christiane and Lise explained that first , you apply for the rights for the play which can be denied if another theater company nearby is doing the same production. You also have to buy the rights, which depends your ticket price, set price, where you’re presenting and how many seats there are available. Once this was cleared, Christiane and Lise approached Barnes to see if he would direct it. “It’s his style of production, we knew he would love this one when we found out the rights were available.”, the ladies told me during our interview together.

OR

I'll spare you the rest of the details, but after a lot of paperwork, the auditions finally took place. 120 people came to audition. Auditions were opened to the general public which is why sometimes, they find new talent. Plus, it's fair and it’s not always the same people on stage. Even the production team changes. High school students are welcome to take part and come to learn before they move on to college or university. Seaway Valley Theater Company has been in existence for 8 years now. Because they don't have a formal theater, they book facilities for rehearsing. I met them at CCVS cafeteria where they were rehearsing for this particular venture. However, the group also works with Dream Builder Studios for smaller shows. April Lea Chaffee-Wall , First Year Journalism Student at St. Lawrence College, Cornwall Campus

OFF THE MAT with Lisa Blanchard

News from Spirit Tree Yoga I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season with their friends and family. I just love Christmas. It is one of my favorite holidays. But Christmas has passed and we are now firmly in the New Year of 2014. I am manifesting a wonderful year this year and I hope you are focusing on all the important things in your life and manifesting your dreams to come true. My first goal is to lose some weight and detox my body. I must admit that I fell of the proverbial “health wagon” through the holidays (and maybe some time before that too). So I have embarked on a 30-day detox challenge. I have given up bread, grains and alcohol. I will primarily be eating protein like chicken and fish , vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. I will be creating juices and smoothies daily with one to two small meals and snacks. Of course, I will be doing lots of yoga as well as running and small weights (like the YogaFit class). In addition, I will be drinking lots of water, and tea. I am very excited to begin this as I have been feeling very sluggish and lacking energy. I also have been sick a lot lately and I know that I haven’t put my health first. We all have fallen off the “health wagon” at some time or other, but now is the time for some of us to get back on. The New Year is a perfect time to reconnect to what matters most in our life. This time of year we are motivated to accomplish these goals, so let’s take advantage of it!! I challenge you to also think of either starting a detox (it does not need to be 30 days, it could be 5 or 10 days), beginning a fitness routine (like yoga!!), and making your health and vitality a priority.

NEWS THIS WEEK from www.theseeker.ca CCH Dealing with High Patient Volumes

With an increase in Emergency Department (ED) visits, physicians’ offices being closed over the holidays and strains of gastroenteritis, influenza and pneumonia circulating in the community, Cornwall Community Hospital is at its busiest with an occupancy rate of 126 per cent.

CCH is the largest community hospital within the Champlain LHIN, outside of Ottawa. As an integral partner in maintaining access to acute care across the region CCH not only provides acute care services to the community, but also accepts referrals from hospitals such as Glengarry Memorial Hospital (GMH) and Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH). As there are tertiary patient services that cannot be provided in Cornwall, the patients requiring tertiary care are transferred to another facility – typically The Ottawa Hospital – and CCH is expected to repatriate when the level of care can be appropriately managed in our facility. This becomes more difficult when our capacity is high, and transferring back to CCH may be delayed until an appropriate bed can be free. Strategies to mitigate this overflow of patients include accommodating some in the hallway, transferring others, and cancelling some surgeries as a last resort, to free up the surgical beds. Once acute care services are no longer required, discharge plans are made to free up the bed as quickly as possible. The acute care occupancy rate at CCH is well over 100%, with a daily average of 14 admitted patients in the Emergency Department, waiting for a bed. Since the beginning of January, there have been 18 unfunded beds opened. “The strain on our resources, both financial and human, is significant,” declares Jeanette Despatie Chief Executive Officer. “We are fortunate to have staff across the entire organization who work extra shifts and hours to ensure patient needs are met.”

THE BEST CROCKPOT BBQ CHICKEN!

FROM MY P ANTRY

I am always on the lookout for a new recipe to try and share with you. This, so far, is my favourite recipe for a very tasty BBQ chicken. The chicken is full of wonderful flavour and 'fall off the bone tender'. I hope you try it! INGREDIENTS: any combination of chicken pieces, weighing up to 5 pounds 1- 12 oz. bottle of Heinz chili sauce 1/3 cup lemon juice, fresh or bottled, either works fine 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp. fancy molasses 1 tsp. Kosher salt 1 tbsp. Mexican chili powder 1/2 tsp. granulated garlic powder 1 tsp. of so of Frank's hot sauce

METHOD: -Rinse and pat dry all of the chicken pieces. -Place the chicken in your slow cooker. -In a bowl, combine all remaining ingredients and pour this over the chicken. -Place the lid on your crockpot and cook on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours OR on LOW for 6 to 8 hours. -No stirring necessary during this time. -Once the chicken is fork tender, serve it along with the great BBQ sauce over rice, noodles or mashed potatoes. -I like to choose chicken with the bone in as it has more flavour than boneless chicken. -Extras freeze beautifully. ENJOY!!!

We’re living in a world of fastpaced technology. We are dating in a time where everything changes around us more often than we change our own underwear (which I hope is at least daily). We’ve grown up during a hyper-active generation and, unfortunately, our love lives are taking a toll. Yes, true love still exists but many people are so blinded by the unlimited options thrown at them daily that they can’t see the benefits of settling down. Never before has it been so easy to meet new people, reconnect with old friends, and stay in touch with exes. We are constantly bombarded with people between Facebook, Twitter, Online Dating Sites (some made specifically for married men to cheat on their wives), and all the other forms of digital communication available to us. It really is no wonder some people don’t see being with just one person as an option. There has always been temptation. There will always be temptation. The difference is that now it’s at our fingertips, waiting for us to succumb to it. We can meet people a world away or in our own backyard and if ‘taken’ people are bored with their relationships or not as attracted to their partner, well it’s all too easy to find “someone better”. What is someone better? Well, the fact of the matter is that the replacement is probably no better than the person you were with originally, but you just had to upgrade. You forgot about the things that attracted you to your partner in the first place and at the first out, you jumped ship after staying up all night chatting with a new “friend” on Facebook.

We’re greedy. And non-committal. Not all of us but most. We want the best of the best and we want it now. When we have something that’s not as shiny as the next person’s we simply dump what we have and move on to what’s better. Our cell phones are the perfect example. With new models and upgrades coming out monthly a lot of people have a hard time deciding what to “settle” on. Three year phone plans are becoming obsolete because things change so quickly and GASP “That’s much too long; my phone won’t be up to par with the rest in a couple of years!” If we can’t stay committed to a phone for three years, how can we start to comprehend spending forever with someone? It’s really not as hard as it seems. It’s called appreciation. If you find real love, appreciate it. If you buy a phone that makes calls and sends texts, appreciate it. Know that what you have is a privilege and know that you’re one of the lucky ones if you find true love. When you start dating someone you really like, stop looking for more, for better. When you commit yourself to one person, know that other options may start to come out of the woodwork. You need to see past the shiny glare that other people bring to the table because their shininess will also fade one day too. Instead of being intrigued by the rest of the fish in the sea, when you already have yourself a great Halibut, get off the water and enjoy what you’re already blessed with. Instead of spending endless time on the internet talking to people you barely know, take time to get to know your partner that much better. If, starting tomorrow, electricity was no more and cell phones didn’t exist would you be able to settle down with someone? Would you be able to communicate in person with your partner? Would you even know who you are? We may be dependent on technology but there’s no guarantee it will always be at our fingertips. True love on the other hand, can be. In a world where nothing stays the same, let love be your constant. Don’t let it pass you by because you can’t sit still. You’ll have plenty of time to sit-still in old age…with the person whose dullness looks shiny to you. Love can survive technology, but only if we start understanding that the only things we need to upgrade are ourselves.

The Love Hawk

Can True Love Survive Technology?

Hi there to all of you Cornwallites who are reading the Seeker, the most informative paper in Cornwall this week. I hope you are all healthy and happy thus far into this New Year. If you're not, I hope you get to feeling better and happier, sooner than later. I have been very fortunate not to have been caught by any of the "flu bugs" going around at this time of year. For those who believe in getting their "flu shots" every year and it works for you, then go do so. There's nothing worse than "sick people" who are continuing to go to work sick, and then giving it to those around them. That's not fair to them or right to do that to their fellow workers. The best thing to do is to stay at home, rest and get yourselves better before returning to work. When you "Nip it (the sickness) in the Bud" you'll get to feeling better sooner. Please, if you know of a family member, a friend or someone that you may know that is "sick" at home - why not go over to help them in any way that you can? They certainly will appreciate your kindness and will remember you the next time you may be sick or down. A little "kindness" goes along way.

Speaking of "kindness," I have a "true story" to share with you all. Last Saturday evening I decided to go out to the Glengarrian Pub with my girl friend, Annie Bouchard to enjoy some music to dance along to with some refreshing drinks and a whole lot of wonderfully fun company. During the course of the evening I had to use the Ladies Room Why I am mentioning this is because I accidentally left one of my rings in there. At the end of the evening I went back to see if it was still there- not to my surprise, it wasn't. But, I thought - I'm just going to go and ask the girls at the bar, if, that's if, anyone may have been honest and or nice enough to give it to them. I was very hesitant to even ask because I was quite skeptical and didn't think anyone would have. Lo and behold I asked and Yes, some kind and honest lady turned it in. I want to say, "Thank you (to whomever you are) so very much for doing such a "Kind Act," such as this. It makes me so very happy knowing that there still are such wonderful and honest people in this world that we share. I also believe that "One good turn deserves another." I have always tried my very best to be honest and trustworthy when it comes to finding things and returning them, such as purses that were left in change rooms, or jewelry lost at the bottom of the pool or clothing items left behind in a doctor's office or on a bus, etc. It makes a person feel really good inside when we do Acts of Kindness and for being Honest. Tip of the Week: Please do your part in showing a little "Kindness," to someone who may need it today. If we all did a little something, a little "Act of Kindness" to help some sick or poor soul to feel better or happier on this place we call Earth, it would be a Better, Brighter and much more Healthier and Happier place to live. You never know when you may be called upon to help someone in need - but when you do. Please Listen and Do your "Kind" part. Do not forget to show Hospitality to strangers for in doing so some have entertained "Angels" without knowing. KINDNESS in words creates Confidence. KINDNESS in thinking creates Profoundness KINDNESS in giving creates LOVE. Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echos are truly endless. ~Mother Theresa~ Until next week... Keep Sharing a Smile or Doing someone a "kind gesture" or two. Why? Why Not???

A Tattered Box of Memories As I prepare for my move back to Cornwall, I am faced once again with the daunting task of moving and packing my belongings. Every day I collect empty boxes that I rapidly fill with the things that will come back. I am a seasoned pro at this and learn to rid myself of unnecessary things; but it is also a time where I find those long-forgotten treasures. Blessed with an incredible memory for people and events, I can vividly remember the details behind them. Who gave them, what was the occasion and often what they were wearing.

I decided with all this travelling and seeing the wear and tear they are enduring, maybe I should safeguard some of these precious items and photos. I set up my wireless printer and connected it to my IPad so I could scan and save some of my favourite photos. My nostalgia at these peeks from my past led me to post some of them on my Facebook page and in no time people were liking them and commenting. I let my family and friends know and they were delighted to see them again. I also heard comments from my sister's family who were pleased to see them. At four and a half years old I had to wear glasses to correct a lazy eye and so I often disliked my photos. Now looking back, it wasn't so bad and my blonde locks were quite adorable. I had to laugh at the outfits and the hairstyles and remarked at how beautiful my older sister Lisa was and my perky cute younger sister Melanie with her majorette outfits and devilish smile. The incredible love story of my parents are clear from the photos. For my niece Monika in Texas it gave her a little taste of her crazy family in Canada and reminds her of what attractive parents she has. Seeing them in their carefree days was a nice treat when she is so far away. Just wish I could have sent her a cup of Tim Hortons' to go along with her viewing as she is clearly missing this now that she is in Houston. Some of the photos are fading and there was a point where I stopped storing them in albums and kept them in photo boxes, but they are true treasures to me. Someday I would like to scan them all as a back-up. A major flood occurred in the building where I currently live, and although I was unaffected, this is the kind of things that can happen, so it will be a labour of love but worth it in the end and I can share them with my siblings and their children. It also reminds me to take more photos, of family, friends, pets, special moments and all that matter. In these pictures I can see relatives who are no longer with us, pets we said goodbye to and places I once lived. So if you ask me which boxes are most important in the move, it is the ones that carry those precious memories. The cards, the special tokens, the ornaments and keepsakes and most important, the photos that captured those special moments in my life.

Dear Seeker Chicks ... Letter to the Editor Neil Young, unethical activist?

The famous, aging Neil Young is back in the headlines again but not for his thin tenor voice. He is the opening act for the First Nations court challenges against Shell Oil in the Fort McMurray region. Young has slated a four-date cross-Canada concert tour to raise $75, 000 for the First Nations’ legal environmental battle.

Publicly criticized for recently supporting non-ethical oil, Young’s album After the Gold Rush with the lyrics ‘Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 1970’s’ is a statement against oil production in its entirety. The record was the best selling North American album of 1972.

NO CATCH - NO GIMMICKS! You can place your coupon on this page for 3 months for FREE.

If you are happy with the results, you can continue by paying $35 / week *3 month max, must offer something of value to our readers, some restrictions may apply

Young is being publicly hounded for comparing the Fort McMurray oil sands to a Hiroshima wasteland. The comment is drawing all kinds of media attention which in turn translates to free publicity for the native protest of broken environmental treaty promises. Labelled in the current news as a disreputable ‘60’s era washout, Young has been honoured with the Order of Manitoba, the Order of Canada, owns five Canadian Juno music awards and is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, twice. His first tour stop was Massey Hall, Toronto, to a sell-out crowd. The last stop will be Calgary, which should prove interesting to say the least.

Realty Check

What am I signing? – Working With A REALTOR If you are buying or selling a house be prepared… you will be signing a lot of paperwork. Now you can either trust everything you are being told and just sign or you can be informed and know what your signature is committing you to. This article will focus on the “Working With a REALTOR: The Agency Relationship” form which you will be required to sign if you are using a professional to trade in real estate whether you are on the buying or the selling side. The working with a Realtor form is used by agents to ensure they explain the 4 different types of representation you will find in a real estate transaction. 1) Seller Representation Your agent is representing you to sell your property. They are working for you by promoting your home and doing their best to ensure you maximize your sale price all while protecting your best interest. Your agent is working for you, you can inform them the lowest your willing to go in your price as well as conditions you would be willing to budge on and they are legal obligated to keep everything 100% confidential. 2) Buyer Representation This is the exact same thing as #1 but this time the agent is representing the buyer with the purchase of the property. All the same principles and legalities apply. 3) Multiple Representation In this case the agent is representing both the buyer and the seller in the transaction. Things get a little tricky because obviously the agent has duties to both sides and is expected to work in an ethical manner by looking after both parties interest. Even though your agent has access to information on both sides at no time can they disclose to you the price, conditions and motivation acceptable to either party. Your professional agent will make sure you are clear on what their responsibility is when it comes to multiple representation.

4) Customer Service Customer service is when the agent does not have a representation agreement with you but are either assisting you with the transaction or are representing a buyer or seller on the other side of the transaction. For instance if you are a buyer working with an agent and are interested in a house that is for sale by owner the agent has full representation responsibilities to you and not to the seller. The agent is still responsible to be fair and honest to the seller but has full duty to the buyer. The working with a Realtor form is a great tool for agents to explain what their responsibility will be to you during the real estate trade. Ask questions and be in the know…. Knowledge is power. The STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) Program workshop offers eligible participants in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) region five weeks of cost-free nicotine replacement therapy and smoking cessation information to help them in their quit attempt.

Nicotine replacement therapy has been shown to effectively help people quit smoking by easing withdrawal symptoms. Workshop participants also receive educational material with quit smoking and relapse prevention strategies, along with information to address other unhealthy lifestyle factors that are known to accompany smoking. STOP workshop(s) will be held in Cornwall and the five eastern counties throughout the year. For more information, to see if you are eligible to participate, and to register for the workshop(s) call the EOHU at 1 800 267-7120 and ask for Health Line.

Cornwall Colts

There’s been a plethora of talk and speculation about Team Canada’s Olympic Men’s Hockey Team. Who’s going to play with who and which choices were wrong and which players would’ve been a better fit. Is PK Subban (last year’s choice for the Norris Trophy) really going to be the 8th defenceman? Would Claude Giroux be a better fit than Rick Nash? How does the snubbing of Martin St. Louis affect his relationship with Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning brass? Those seem to be the most popular questions.

The Seeker’s Player of the Week

This column isn’t about to solve those questions. Instead, I’d like to focus on the Cornwall connection to the team that could bring home another gold medal. Matt Duchene was (rightfully) chosen as one of the forwards. The 23 year old star for the Colorado Avalanche has deep roots in Cornwall – his mother was born here and his grandparents still call this area home. Duchene, who was drafted 3rd overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft (behind John Tavares and Victor Hedman) has picked up more than 230 points in just over 300 games. He provides speed to an already quick skating line up. He also provides team management with a player who can and will adapt to whatever role is thrust upon him. And this being his first Olympic games, this will allow him to gain experience so he’ll be one of the team leaders in future international events.

With all the accolades Duchene has so far, he’s not even the most decorated family member when it comes to hockey hardware. His uncle Newell Brown Jr hoisted the Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. Duchene was at the ensuing celebration at the Brown family farm that summer when several hundred people welcomed Brown home with the most prized possession in all of hockey. Winning the Stanley Cup is usually the pinnacle for any hockey player but the feeling of being a part of a team that wins Olympic gold is pretty euphoric too. While Brown can show off a Stanley Cup ring, here’s hoping Cornwall can get the chance to celebrate with the rest of the Brown family when Duchene happens to wear the gold medal during his next summer visit to Cornwall.

Bourret dealt to Thetford-Mines

Alex Bourret is no longer a member of the Cornwall River Kings. The forward was dealt today to the Thetford-Mines Isothermic in exchange for centre Jean-Francois Laplante.

In 7 games with the Isothermic this season, Laplante has 4 goals and 5 assists. He also has 14 penalty minutes. The 31-year-old veteran from StConstant has 278 career points in the LNAH in 243 games.

“Laplante is a competitor, he is a leader and a winner,” said player/coach Steve Simoes. “He is the only player in this league to win three championships in a row with three different teams,” added Simoes. “(Laplante) is the guy that you absolutely want on your team and not against you.” Both Laplante and the newly acquired Jean-Rene Forget are expected to be in the lineup this weekend for the River Kings. “Forget is another piece of the puzzle we needed to accomplish our goal,” said Simoes. “He brings good skill but above all, he is a true team warrior.” Cornwall, winners of three games in a row, hosts Saint-Georges on Saturday night at the Civic Complex.

The Legendary Gordon Lightfoot in Concert Friday, November 21st, 2014 - 8:00PM - LIVE at Aultsville Theatre Tickets go ON SALE Friday January 30, 2014 at 10:00 am At the Cornwall Civic Complex Box Office 613-938-9400 Or ONLINE at www.admission.com (search ‘Aultsville’) The staff and volunteers at Aultsville Theatre are thrilled to announce that the Legendary Gordon Lightfoot will be gracing the stage at Cornwall’s 680-seat, non-profit Aultsville Theatre on a fall-2014 tour that includes stops at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, Montreal’s Place des Arts and 4 nights at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall. Aultsville Theatre General Manager, Janet Martel, can hardly hide her enthusiasm. “I’m a huge fan of Mr. Lightfoot’s music and I was incredibly excited when we received word that he wanted to bring his tour here to our community theatre. I believe this show will be a real feather in our cap and will showcase the fantastic technical upgrades we’ve been making.” “Plus, we’ll be offering a special presale opportunity to people who’ve signed up via our website to receive our e-newsletter.” added Aultsville

Theatre Communications Coordinator Graham Greer, “Access to an icon like Gordon Lightfoot is a great way to reward our supporters.”

In the music world, Gordon Lightfoot may very well be the idol of icons. When listening to a Lightfoot recording, Bob Dylan "doesn't want the song to end", and can't think of any of his songs he doesn't like. Daniel Lanois loves everything about him. Jimmy Buffet admits he always tries to write songs like him. But rather than bask in the adulation he so clearly inspires, the musical legend continues to work harder than ever. Currently marking five decades of touring and counting, Gordon Lightfoot will once again invite fans to be a part of his legacy when he embarks on his 2014 Canadian Tour. Mr. Lightfoot has won 15 Juno Awards and been nominated for 5 Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2001. In May 2003 was made a Companion of the Order of Canada and is also a member of the Order of Ontario. In 2004 was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and, in 2012, the U.S. Songwriters Hall of Fame. Ticket prices start at $49.50* (* plus service charges and taxes). VIP Fan Xperience packages including a pre-show reception AND a chance to meet Gordon Lightfoot are available in most cities, including Cornwall. Hughena is mother of three wonderful children who live all around the world with whom she keeps in touch through facebook and Skype. On her website, Hughena explains how she came up with the idea of JustFriendsConnecting. “It was a Saturday night and one of my daughters had called me and she was really upset about her job. I sat there after our phone call and started to think about businesses she might start. Let’s see now – She loves to go out, she loves to meet people, and she loves to party – in fact, the only time she is at home is when she has nowhere to go or no one to go with. Ahhh, nowhere to go and no one to go with. Well actually, there are lots of places to go but who wants to go alone? Anyway, somewhere after that last thought, I had the idea. I researched it and voila! here it is! For the third consecutive year, the Cornwall Scrabble Club will be hosting the Ottawa-Montreal Scrabble challenge. Thirty-two Scrabble players will be putting “their best words forward” in an attempt at having their team win the ULU trophy, which was claimed by the Ottawa Scrabble Club last year. Two Cornwall players were invited to join in so as to balance the teams. I will be playing on the Montreal team while Roderick McDonald will be playing on the Ottawa team. Out of the 32 players, 4 are at a most professional level... some of which represented Canada, at the World Scrabble Championship in Prague in the Czech Republic last Dec. 2013, as well as at the Canadian National Championship in June 2013, and the 2013 Can-Am Scrabble Championship.

Webinista, Socialista and Visual dazzler, Julia is also an Entrepreneur who owns and operates the Webdesign and Marketing firm VersaCore Tech designs, and coowns the Seeker Newspaper in Cornwall Ontario. Wife of Political Writer John Lucio and mother of 5, Julia's main background is in Arts, Literature and programing. Julia is the president of the Cornwall Business Network and sits on the board of directors of Focus Art. She is a member of the Lions club, Team Cornwall and the Chamber of Commerce. This is a NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association) rated tournament, therefore every player must be a registered member with this prestigious Scrabble association. See the entrants list on the link below. http://www.cross-tables.com/entrants.php?u=12461 Eight games will be played. Games will start at 10 a.m. and will run to late afternoon... after a break for lunch. It will be interesting to see what the outcome of this tournament will be. One thing is certain; win or lose… everyone will have had a most fun and interesting day.
