Presented by Jason Setnyk News & Politics CONSERVATIVES TO STAMP OUT HOME MAIL DELIVERY - The way people in Cornwall (and Canada) get their mail will soon change. Canada Post has announced that it will eliminate home mail delivery, and it will also cut 8000 jobs, including jobs here in Cornwall Ontario. Furthermore, the price of a stamp will raise to 85 cents come March 31st 2014. MP Guy Lauzon wrote:" Canada Post is at a pivotal moment in its history. The combination of fast internet and smart tablets has shaken the mail business at its very core. Letter mail began to slow down in 2007 and has declined steadily, accounting for only 51% of Canada Post’s revenue. Further, only 200 of Canada Post`s top customers account for 45% of its revenue. Canadians mailed almost one billion fewer letters in 2012 than they did in 2006. Almost half of Canadian households send only two pieces of mail or less each month. Although the number of pieces of mail delivered to each address is decreasing dramatically each year, the number of addresses to be serviced grows steadily each year. Canada Post is now responsible for 845,000 more addresses than it was in 2007. From 2006 to 2012 letter mail in Canada reduced from 5 billion pieces to 4 billion. Canadians mailed 255 million fewer pieces of mail in 2012 than they did in 2011. All these reductions have resulted in huge financial losses for Canada Post. In 2011, for the first time in 17 years, Canada Post failed to earn a profit and reported a loss of $327 million before taxes. They expect a substantial financial loss in fiscal year 2013.” Stephen Harper and the Conservatives were unable to come up with innovative solutions, so they opted to raise prices and cut services instead.
MAYOR BOB KILGER REQUESTS MEETING WITH FEDERAL TRANSPORT MINISTER RAITT The City of Cornwall has received numerous inquiries and concerns regarding a development project currently underway at the Cornwall Harbour on Transport Canada lands. The City has not issued any building permits or site plan approvals for this project. The Public Port of Cornwall is under the sole administration and control of Transport Canada. As such, the development is on federal land and thus exempt from Provincial Regulations like the Ontario Building Code and municipal site plan control. The federal government can proceed to
construction without any approval from the municipality, and has done so. In Fall 2013, Transport Canada entered into a lease agreement for this federally-owned property with a company that is licensed to distribute products for regional road safety including dust suppression and ice control for roadways. Activity currently taking place at the Public Port of Cornwall includes construction by the tenant of two storage tanks for the purpose of receiving, storing and distributing calcium chloride as part of the company’s operations. Transport Canada has dealt with its tenant exclusively with regards to lease negotiations, site plan issues and construction schedules. “The project is clearly inconsistent with the Waterfront Plan, with the Official Plan, with the long term vision of our community, with recent developments and efforts in the area, and we are very disappointed with this outcome,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “We are also very concerned about the lack of dialogue and public consultation.” As a result, Mayor Kilger has requested a meeting with Federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt.

Sports & Lifestyle RIVERKINGS PLAY LIKE ROYALTY LAST SATURDAY NIGHT – PierreLuc Faubert scored two goals and an assist to lead the River Kings to a 4-2 victory over the Sorel-Tracy Eperviers last Saturday night in front of 1,246 fans at the Civic Complex. With the win, Cornwall improves to 7-7-2 on the LNAH season and now sits only two points behind third-place Sorel (8-5-2). Faubert, the shifty sparkplug, opened the scoring at 9:15 of the first for the River Kings. He beat Sorel goaltender Francis Gourdeau high glove side, on a deflection from a
wrist shot by defenceman Dominic D’Amour. Sorel evened the score just 59 seconds into the second, converting on a power play. River King killer Grégory Dupré tapped in a perfect feed from Stéphane Roy that beat Kings goaltender Loic Lacasse through the legs. But the River Kings would respond with a pair of highlight reel goals. Forty-three seconds after the Dupré marker, Dominic Chiasson energized the crowd when he undressed an Eperviers defenceman and went in all alone on Gourdeau, beating him on the blocker side. Then, with the River Kings shorthanded, Ryan Jardine sprung loose on a long breakaway and he beat Gourdeau with a gorgeous deke to his forehand at 16:15 of the second. Faubert scored his second of the evening, converting on a cross-crease pass from Bobby Mazerolle at 4:12 of the third. Eric Perricone got Sorel to within two goals, beating Lacasse with 9:13 to play in the third. Lacasse had another solid outing for the River Kings and he was particularly sharp late in the second period, stopping Dupré on a shorthanded breakaway. Lacasse made 35 saves on the night to earn the victory. Sorel outshot Cornwall 37-35. The announced stars were Faubert (first), Chiasson (second) and Lacasse (third).
Letters & Opinions MARK A MACDONALD SAYS COUNCIL ASLEEP AT THE SWITCH - Dear Seeker, With all due respect, this Council has been asleep at the switch. First, they waste millions of dollars on payoffs for top executives. Second, the old hospital slips through their fingers when it could have been used for the social needs of the community. Next we hear about storage tanks being built on the waterfront and they knew nothing about it. Are you kidding me. Talk about being asleep at the switch. This is terrible news for our community. ANDREA HORWATH EXPLAINS HOW ONTARIO LIBERALS ARE SPENDING YOUR HYDRO BILL - The Auditor General released her report — and it's worse than expected. While Ontario Power Generation has cut staff by 8.5%, executive pay spiked 74% since 2005. While some Ontarians are struggling to keep their homes, OPG gave one executive over $390,000 to help buy a $1.3 million house. It is clear whose bills the Liberals are paying. While your rates rise, Liberals inflate executive salaries. But what about the ratepayers?

Wherever I may roam
About the Tanks On Monday, I went down by the water front to speak to the protesters and to learn why they were standing out in such a cold, snowy day. I had a lovely conversation with Denis Thibault, a city councillor when he explained to me plainly that the construction company wasn’t doing the right thing for our city; that the city wants to put a park there, much like the one closer to the bridge, with a nice scenic bike path. I spoke with the councillor after a short attempt at a conversation with a rather closed-off construction worker who refused to answer any of my questions and stated misleadingly that the City Mayor was aware of the situation. Oh, yes, the Mayor was aware of the situation, and as Councillor Thibault stated to me, the Mayor was unhappy with said circumstances.
NEWS THIS WEEK from www.theseeker.ca WATERFRONT STORAGE TANKS: PUBLIC FORUM OFFERS NO ANSWERS. Article by Julia Lucio Photos by Jason Setnyk A sizable crowd of concerned citizens showed up at the Civic Complex on Wednesday night to attend a public forum about the installation of storage tanks on Cornwall’s waterfront.
The event was put in place as a combined effort by the Chamber of Commerce, City Council, Groupe Renaissance amongst others, to take the pulse of the population on the topic.
MP Guy Lauzon
Moderator Nicole Mills introduced the panel of officials, which was comprised of Chuck Charlebois from Groupe Renaissance, MP Guy Lauzon, Doug Smith from the Transport Ministry and David Murphy representing the Mayor and City Council.
After a brief welcome and thank you from Chuck Charlebois, Guy Lauzon took the floor, first stating that he knew nothing about the situation when it first was brought up to his attention on Friday. Monday Morning, he placed a call to Transport Minister Lisa Raitt to express his concerns. Mrs Raitt allegedly told him that she was very concerned about the circumstances as well. Doug Smith, Chief of Staff for the Minister, followed. “I don’t have answers”, he said, “but I’m here to listen”, setting the tone for the entire evening.
The dutiful councillor informed me that the city council would be meeting to discuss the situation of the chemical tank construction on federal waterfront lands, later that
evening. I looked into this whole affair at the Cornwall.ca website to see what else I could learn. The handy web page stated that, “The federal government can proceed to construction without any approval from the municipality, and has done so.” To my understanding, that basically means we have no say over what happens to that land, because it is not technically owned by Cornwall. I was also informed that originally the funds had come from Cornwall taxpayer’s to remove large tanks of chemicals- that had been there before, and now we will have that ghastly sight once again on our beautiful waterfront. Hopefully this situation can be resolved for Cornwall’s best interest. “The project is clearly inconsistent with the Waterfront Plan, with the Official Plan, with the long term vision of our community, with recent developments and efforts in the area, and we are very disappointed with this outcome,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “We are also very concerned about the lack of dialogue and public consultation.” –direct quote taken from http://www.cornwall.ca/en/newslist/index.aspx?deptId=I82X5exjK422 E8HPlUsqZdAJgeQuAleQuAl April Lea Chaffee-Wall First Year Journalism Student at St. Lawrence College, Cornwall Campus
Transport Minister’s Chief of Staff, Doug Smith
A question period where residents were encouraged to speak up followed. Unfortunately, the answer to most questions was a resounding “WE DON’T KNOW” and although everybody seemed to agree that a solution pleasing all parties should be sought after, many felt this to be unrealistic at this point.
Mr. Lauzon suggested that the municipal government should consider buying the land as a potential resolution. But when asked what the cost of such a purchase would be, citizens were once again told “WE DON’T KNOW”. Former City Councillor Leslie O’Shaughnessy raised the very valid point that in order to complete such a purchase, Akwasasne would have to be included in the talks and approve the purchase–which is unlikely to happen. Mark McDonald, who ran against Bob Kilger in the last municipal elections, alluded that Cornwall, and Mr. Smith, should play hardball and return to Ottawa with only one option on the table: break the lease. What do you think? Is there a potential resolution to this problem? Should Cornwall have the final say on its waterfront or should the Federal Government have Carte Blanche to develop this land however it sees fit? The Love Hawk
Date Your Best Friend there’s a key ingredient missing from so many relationships these days. People keep wondering how to improve their relationships, how to get along with their significant others better, how to become one of those couples that just has ‘it’. the answer is simple people: the ‘it’ that those annoyingly cute couples have is friendship. we have become so obsessed with creating perfect relationships that we often look past the necessary ingredient that really generates staying power. Being friends with the person you’re dating is essential; being best friends with that person should be what you strive for. think about it, you’re probably dating someone with hopes of creating a life together, right? this is a person you spend most of your time with and someone who will see you on your most god awful days if you end up getting married or staying together for the long haul. why on earth would you not be best friends with this person? You don't need to be best friends beforehand, but you should definitely build that friendship as your relationship grows. Unfortunately, if you take a look around, you’ll see tons of couples who are missing this key element. we have all become so obsessed with being in a relationship that we think: if the sex is good then it must be true love. we rush into love thinking chemistry is more about how our bodies work together than how compatible our minds are. we blindly believe that our soul mates are found is good conversations over dinner and fireworks that fly when you kiss. Sure, good dinner convos and high intensity sparks are great indicators that you’re on the right path to something real, but there needs to be more. there needs to be depth. You need to be able to be yourself with this person. You need to be comfortable enough to let them see who you are when no one else is around. After all, this is how the best friendships work, right? throughout our lives we are always presented with opportunities for friendship. we learn early on that best friends are in a class all their own. these are the friends who see us cry, they learn our secrets at slumber parties, they see us at our worst and they love us anyway. when we’re younger, most of us define our friendships by gender. Girls are friends with girls and boys with boys (the rare occasion sees these lines blurred). we share our secret crushes about the other gender with our best friends and we trust that no one will find out. And as we get older, people believe that men and women can’t simply be “just friends” anyway. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t? But if you wanna find love, why not with your best friend? You need to be with a person who makes you feel at ease; someone you can be totally open with and have confidence that they won’t judge you or love you any less. You need to date someone you can be silly with and laugh with, someone you can dance and sing with, even if you’re not at all talented in those departments. Develop a relationship with someone who lets you be you and who allows you to speak your mind. If you’re ever scared to be yourself or say how you feel with the person you’re dating then you might want to start re-evaluating things. why subject yourself to a life of insecurity, worried that you’ll be judged for every move you make? Sorry, but that’s not what lasting relationships are made of.

JASON SETNYK REFLECTS ON HOW NELSON MANDELA TAUGHT US THE POWER OF EDUCATION Some on social media are lamenting that youth are mourning the death of a celebrity more than that of a prolific Civic Rights Activist. However mourning the death of a movie celebrity more than that of Nelson Mandela is not a reflection on today’s youth. It is actually a reflection on us adults. There are some great parents and great teachers out there, but perhaps we are not doing enough to teach our children what really matters. Before we point our fingers at what is wrong with society, and before we start blaming children, we should take a good long look in the mirror first. Education starts at home, it continues at school, and it keeps on happening for the rest of our lives. We as adults must build the foundations for our children. Nelson Mandela evoked change through hard work, and we must do the same. If young people do not know who Nelson Mandela is, don’t judge them, teach them.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. -Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)
Sometimes it’s not even that the person makes you feel insecure, it’s just that your friendship chemistry is off. think about someone you’ve known for years but could never develop that real bond with. that happens with relationships too. You might get along with someone fine but if that friendship bond never forms you really aren’t left with much besides the physical attraction (which by all means is great if that’s all you’re looking for). Jeremy taylor wrote “Love is friendship set on fire” and there is nothing truer than his words. If you want a relationship that will last and bring out the best in you, find a friend within the fireworks that happen during the great sex you have. when we’re kids, we talk about how cool it would be if we could live with our best friends and spend all our time together. well, now you have the chance. find a friend within your lover; these are the relationships that lead to happily ever after because they are rooted in true friendship. It’s the main ingredient you need to make it work, it’s the flour in your cake of life.

Chamber Warns of Questionable Hot Water Sales Tactics
The Cornwall Chamber has an urgent message for area consumers. Salespeople, representing a heating services firm, are going door to door throughout the Cornwall area.
“The Chamber has received a report from one of its members, reports Executive Manager, Lezlie Strasser. “These door-to-door salespeople are telling householders that Reliance Home Comfort is no longer in business and their hot water tank must be replaced. That is definitely not the case and consumers need to be aware.
“Any consumer taken in by these misleading tactics have a cooling off period of 10 days within which to cancel the contract, continues Strasser. “They do so by contacting the firm, telling them they want to cancel the contract and have the newly installed tank removed. On its web site, it reports that National Home Services has a pattern of complaints concerning misleading sales practices. Consumer complaints allege that door to door sales persons are misleading consumers, providing false information and using high pressure sales tactics. Strasser advises any householder visited by one of these salespeople not to let them in to their home and not to sign any documents. “If you are visited, tell them, no, and contact Reliance Home Comfort at 1-888-837-1451 and report the incident to them. Strasser recommends that consumers encountering these salespeople contact the Ontario Consumer Protection Office at 1800-889-9768 and lodge a complaint. She also advises that recent legislation, to come into force in early 2014, extends the cooling off period from 10 to 20 days.

Year in Review Meeting Set for December 18 By Bob Peters The date has been set for the annual Year in Review meeting, hosted by Team Cornwall. The meeting on December 18th will be the fifteenth consecutive year that a recap of the year's economic activity has been compiled by the City's Economic Development Department.
Doors will be open at 7:00 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:30 a.m. sharp at the Galaxy Cinemas on Second Street East. "Throughout the year companies and individuals invest in our City leading to new jobs and new assessment," said Mark Boileau, Manager of Cornwall Economic Development. "Some development projects are well known, while other investments are less visible. All of the economic activity is important and every dollar invested goes towards helping Cornwall grow and prosper."
Gilles Latour and Mark Boileau are gearing up for the YEAR IN REVIEW
The meeting always attracts a full house of community and business leaders, and Mayor Bob Kilger is expected to welcome a number of out-of-town guests as well. "Cornwall has increasingly been a topic of interest in corporate boardrooms across Canada," said Mayor Kilger. "That interest leads to investment which generates more interest and investment." Team Cornwall Achievements Along with the presentation from Cornwall Economic Development, Team Cornwall will also be highlighting its members' efforts and accomplishments to promote Cornwall over the past year.
"Team Cornwall works to support Cornwall Economic Development and its efforts to attract new investment to Cornwall," said Gilles Latour, Chair of Team Cornwall. "We always look forward to this meeting as a way of seeing exactly how we are doing and to hopefully get a glimpse of what is down the road."
Open to All
The meeting is open to all - regardless of Team Cornwall membership. A light breakfast will be served at 7am, followed by the regular meeting.

How do the Local Seeker Gals welcome in the holiday season? It's by enjoying a pot luck supper with members of the focus Art Association of which Julia Lucio (left) and Mai-Liis Renaud are Directors. Also in the photo is Betty Rerrie.
Longing for Home Last week, the emotions that had been brewing for months, finally made their way to the surface. Not sure what triggered it; could be the holidays, may be a few unfortunate turns of events and disappointments, might be too many Christmas movies, but whatever it is; the floodgates opened and released all that was weighing me down. My first reaction; I was missing my hometown. It took everything in me not to hit the highway and return to the people I love and miss so much in Cornwall. Yes, I was homesick. I was longing for a calming cup of tea with Mom and Dad, while Carlo, their little chihuahua curls up on my lap. I was missing my sisters, nieces and nephew. I wanted to see my friends; laugh with them and take in every detail of what is going on in their lives. I wished to walk downtown, browse through the decorated and inviting stores and run into twenty or thirty people I knew and catch up. I craved to sit in a café or local restaurant and listen to what was happening in my community. I wanted to be home! So I did the next best thing; I caught up online. I read every post, I looked at the photos of Christmas trees, pets getting into mischief, children visiting Santa, parades. I reveled in the holiday plans, seethed over the tanks on the waterfront; I reconnected with what was missing.
I am still such a Cornwall girl, that I have not given up my Cornwall cell number, and this week; it got a workout. to say I was on the phone all night was not an understatement. I spent all night Monday talking to eight Cornwallites, and messaged with even more. who needs food? I got the soul replenishment I needed. One thing that is not known by many is I have an incredible memory, and can recollect minute details about conversations and people, even to what they were wearing and where we were. talking to them, I felt like they were right there with me. I reached out to them and they reached out to me. My mornings were brightened by the many texts and instant messages I have received from my loved ones and sweet dreams were achieved as they wished me good night. At the holidays, it is even more apparent on what is missing, and for me; it is my hometown and the friendly and caring people at the heart of it. So to all of you who reached out to me; I thank you. I will miss my very first team Cornwall/City of Cornwall Year in Review, but I will be thinking of you and there in spirit. I will never forget the kindness and support I felt there. It is a wonderful city, and I am proud to say it is my hometown. xo.

BORDER PATROL with Craig Revelle
A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands with the holiday season now upon us, I would like to take a moment to wish everyone a safe and prosperous Holiday Season, and a very Happy New Year. A new season will be here before we know it, and local race teams, tracks and everyone are working hard behind the scenes in hopes of a successful season in 2014. the biggest off-season news so far was just announced this past week that Matt Sheppard and car owner Jeff Brownell will not be together when the season starts in 2014. Sheppard will now be part of the HBR team, and will become a teammate to Jimmy Phelps next year. the news was shocking to the racing community, as Sheppard and Brownell had been a very potent combination for several years. while Sheppard will still compete several times a week, Brownell has decided to scale back his operation to just one night a week with his son Jeff Brownell Jr. at the wheel at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park.

More locally, it has been recently announced that Jenna David will make the move to the 358 Modified division after completing a successful season in Sportsman in 2013 that included her first feature win, and finishing eighth overall in the DIRtcar Sportsman Series.
Mohawk International Raceway has already announced their opening dates for 2014. they will start the season early next year in conjunction with the Go Nuclear Late Model Series and their ‘Atomic Spring Clash’. this event will be a weekend doubleheader, with friday, April 26th consisting of the Go Nuclear Late Models, a $2000 to win Empire Super Sprints event, and Sportsman. Saturday April 27th will see the return of the Go Nuclear Late Models, as well as a DIRtcar Sportsman Series race and an Enduro. Adult ticket prices for the entire weekend will only be $30. In unprecedented fastion, all fans purchasing the weekend pass will be entered into a drawing for over $10000 worth of cash and prizes courtesy of Shayne tenace and the Go Nuclear Late Model Series. I have been a fan of the Late Models since they returned several years ago, and I really have to credit Shayne tenace for taking his idea of the Go Nuclear Late Model Series, and growing it year after year. It has become a big deal to area Late Model racers and is well supported. Including the race fans and giving them the potential to win cash and prizes just by attending races. Brockville Speedway has announced that the Ogilvie’s Auto triple Crown Series will return for another year in 2014. It also appears that there will be some schedule changes during the 1000 Islands RV DIRt car Northeast fall Nationals weekend. It is not yet been determined just what those changes are, but it could see the Small Blocks or Big Blocks moving to the friday night portion of the weekend, with the other being held later in the day on Saturday. the idea is to provide more ideal track conditions by getting away from the daytime racing. More details on this will be announced at a later date. there is plenty of big news happening with Evans Mills Motorsports Park as they are under new management for 2014. they have been hard at work over the offseason, and have some big events coming in 2014. they are also building a kart racing track within the infield of the big track. Brewerton and fulton Speedway have also had some big news over the past few weeks, as they announced that they will be back in the DIRtcar fold for 2014. fulton will host a Big Block Modified Super DIRtcar Series race on Saturday, April 26th, while Brewerton will have the Hurricane 100 358 Modified DIRtcar Series race once again in October. Brewerton will run DIRtcar Big Block Modifieds, while fulton Speedway will be a mixed group of DIRtcar Big Blocks and DIRtcar Small Blocks, with separate points tallied for each class.

Swiffer and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser products are excellent and easy to dispose of. they may be a little more expensive, but are worth every penny. No one needs four different kinds of cleaner that do the same job. If you do not like the product, return it to the store and get your money back as long as you have a receipt. You should know the first time you use a product if you like it or not.
Note: In a house with multiple levels (basement, main floor, second level), you should have a hand vacuum stationed at each level. If you have a large bungalow, install one at each end. If there is mess to be picked up, a handy hand-vac makes cleanup much easier and saves you time. If it’s handy, you’ll be much more inclined to clean the mess right away.
Sports Equipment Move off-season gear to an area of the basement specifically designated for that purpose. Clean the equipment before putting it away to make it last longer and to remove bad odours. Donate, sell, or trade what the kids have outgrown or no longer use or care for.
Disposal Of Large Items If you need to dispose of large amounts of construction material as a result of house renovations, or any other items for that matter, contact businesses such as A work Easy Solution, who are equipped with special vehicles to take larger loads to the dump or scrap yard.
Grocery Bags Plastic bags tend to take up most of the kitchen, or any other space in the house. take them to a grocery store for recycling. Invest in a couple of cloth grocery bags. take them with you when grocery shopping and you’ll save money.

GETTING RID OF CLUTTER - WHAT TO DISCARD
Hi there to all of you wonderful people here in Cornwall. I do hope you all are in a happy place today. Another week has come and gone and we are getting closer and closer to that very "Special time of Year," CHRIStMAS. this is my most favorite time of year, when all of our loving families and awesome friends get together to share good times with one another. A time to give thanks, a time to reflect on what we have done and or accomplished throughout 2013. It is a special time to be able to see those of whom we haven't seen in a while or perhaps all year long. Please make sure to check in on or visit those who aren't able to get out and about, because they need and would really appreciate your visits the very most. Perhaps when you are visiting your loved ones in an Old Age Home or Hospital this year, could you perhaps say "Hello" and wish a Merry Christmas to the others who may not have family members or aren't able to have their families visiting them. thank you kindly.
Tip of the Week: Here's another wonderful way of giving without it costing you an arm and or a leg. If you are able to bake or cook something this year, do so. the "gift of giving," is so special and more appreciated when you have done it yourself. Get out some of your Grandma's, Aunt's and or Mother's recipe books and find some simple Christmas recipes to follow. Please make sure the person that you are baking for doesn't have any allergies before you start cooking or baking for them. Along with this idea why don't you use your creative skills and make up some handmade Christmas cards this year. twill be a labour of love for you and for those receiving them. the many thrift stores here in Cornwall, such as the Agape Center, Value Village and the Salvation Army are all stocked up for all of your winter and Christmas needs and wants. Please make sure to give a little something extra to the Salvation Army's kettles when you see them in and around town. those dollars you are donating go towards helping the many families who are less fortunate than yourselves, especially at this time of year when the family's income has to go to heating and other major bills. Christmas is truly the time of year to think of others like your families, your friends and the many others who may not have anyone. Could you please give some of your valuable time to go and visit someone who may be sad and lonely this Christmas. time is free, it's worth nothing to some, but everything to someone, when all they have is time. A "Meaningful Life" is not being rich, being popular or being highly educated, or perfect. It is about being real, being humble, being strong and being able to share ourselves and touch others along our life's journey. It is only then, that we (You and I) can have a full, happy and contented Life!!!

It’s simple to reinvest dividends — you just need to sign up for a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP). Once you do, you won’t receive dividends directly as cash; instead, your dividends will be directly reinvested in the underlying equity. Be aware, though, that you may incur a fee when reinvesting dividends. By doing some research, you can find companies that have not only consistently paid dividends year after year but also increased those dividend payments regularly. (Keep in mind that companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.) By reinvesting dividends, you may be able to realize some key benefits. first, you’ll be building your share ownership, which can help you build wealth. No matter what the market is doing, adding shares can be beneficial — but may be especially valuable when the market is down. when share prices are low, reinvesting dividends — which don’t typically fluctuate with share price — can help boost your investment reach further, simply because each reinvested dividend can buy more shares than at the previous higher share price.
Consider this: It took investors 25 years to recover from the Crash of 1929 if they did not reinvest their dividends — but it only took them 15 years to recover from the crash if they did reinvest dividends, according to Ned Davis Research. And we’ve seen the same phenomenon in more recent years, too. Since 1987, according to Ned Davis Research, we’ve had three major market corrections: Black Monday in 1987; the bursting of the dot-com bubble from 2000 to 2002; and the bursting of the subprime and credit bubbles in 2008. the S&P 500 rose following those market corrections. Investors who stayed invested during those corrections had the opportunity to participate in rising markets. those investors participating in a dividend reinvestment plan may have been able to buy more shares at a lower price. Of course, past performance doesn’t guarantee future results and the value of your stock shares can fluctuate. Performance is not guaranteed and you may lose principal. while reinvesting your dividends clearly can be beneficial, you do have to be aware that, even if you aren’t receiving the dividends as cash, you will be taxed on them. But the dividend tax rate remains quite favorable compared to general income tax rates. while taxes are a consideration when investing, they should never be the driving factor. Consider also that investing in dividend-paying stocks does carry some risk. You may be able to reduce the impact of this possible volatility by sticking with quality stocks as part of a diversified portfolio. As we’ve seen, reinvesting dividends can help you build your investment portfolio — so consider putting this technique to work in your investment strategy. this article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones financial Advisor.
As an investor, you’ll eventually need to make all sorts of decisions — and some will be difficult. But there’s one choice you can make that can be relatively easy: reinvesting stock dividends.

Reinvesting Dividends Can Be a Smart Move
One day many years ago Dad got the idea of going to the cottage in winter. that does not seem too strange until you know that the cottage did not have a road going to it. A 15 minute boat ride in Canadian Shield country is not easily accomplished by going cross country, but we wanted to try. we set out from home early on a bright cold day and reached the area of the lake shortly before noon. we were equipped with lunch and fire-making supplies, snowshoes, and mukluks, the kind that were all leather with no rubber soles on them. we were all 6 of us , well dressed for cold temperatures, and excited to get to the cottage. Some of you might be able to picture the landscape. for a few minutes you can walk on smooth, road like ridges that can fool you into thinking the going will be easy. what lies between are low lying swamps, beaver ponds, and streams. Growing on these ridges, are wind swept pines, scrubby oak trees, blueberry bushes, crunchy dry mosses, and very scratchy juniper bushes. the low areas are full of swamp maple, sphagnum moss, and bog myrtle. On that day in winter we were well aware of the landscape, and with the blanket of snow, the going was easier than in summer. we just walked right over all the low areas! After several hours, there we were, looking across the lake at our cottage, beautifully blanketed in snow. Dad started across, with a large stick, poking the ice ahead to make sure it was solid. Halfway across we heard him shout, ”It’s getting soft!”. we shouted in reply “Come on back!.” Dad kept on. He took a few more steps, then a few more. I remember the feeling of dread, the vision of him going straight down. to our relief, he turned back, saved by his common sense. we all gave him a hug when he made it to the shore, and with a feeling of light-heartedness we lit a fire , enjoyed our lunch in the fresh cold air, and then made the trek home.
