The Library Director
“Yes, I am retiring at the end of May after serving as Library Director for 27 years. I was hired as Library Director and began working in May 1984” said Mr. Schaffer. “I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve in this position. This community deserves credit for supporting this library, both financially and in other ways, with the result that this library has developed into a dynamic institution. Not only does the Massena Public Library offer great resources, but it has developed into an active cultural center. As Director, I have enjoyed the great variety of duties from selecting new books and DVDs to organizing concerts, art shows and other cultural events. I suppose what I have liked most about my job is the great variety of responsibilities: from creating budgets to helping individuals find information to writing grants. Of course, I have enjoyed working with very nice people who work on the staff and who serve on the board. It is with mixed feelings that I am leaving.” MORE ABOUT PAUL AND THE LIBRARY INSIDE...

Wireless internet access just keeps spreading and evolving. 3G, Wi-Fi, 4G, it just keeps getting better! Why?—because people want it! I know I definitely do. I don’t want to be in the stone ages anymore then the next guy. If some old guy in a cave in Afghanistan is enjoying a cup of coffee and keeping abreast of world news via high-speed internet access, I’d like to be able to do the same here in my own country. It’s not about keeping up with the Jones’s—it’s about keeping up with the times, and living! It’s about connecting with others and re-connecting with long lost friends and family wherever they are. At McDonald’s they’ve been running a special for $1 any size cup of coffee. Sweet. And there’s always free Wi-Fi available, for those enjoying their food & beverage inside. Don’t you just love America?! We are living the dream, people… because others have realized that if they build it, we will come. Mark Zuckerberg realized that when he was creating Facebook. In almost every corner of the globe, this is common knowledge: people want wireless internet access. And here in America, we don’t want it just at McDonalds. We want it everywhere—even while on the interstate, hence the 3G, 4G. Whenever I drive to Texas, I setup a wireless network in our minivan for the passenger and children to all be connected, watching the news, studying, streaming videos, playing games, surfing the web. Bush said America is addicted to oil. Now that was just ridiculous. It’s not like the drugs being smuggled into our country to meet the demand of the addicted and the afflicted. Or like all the mass quantities of alcohol consumed by MISCELLANEOUS Bush in his unruly youth. This culture is nothing like that! It’s about getting where we want to go. We use oil to get to work, school, go visit friends & family, etc., and to have food & products delivered to our stores! And we use the internet to get information into our minds quickly, and to network & communicate. What I don’t get is why there aren’t more restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops in Massena providing Wi-Fi access. It’s not like developing an electrical infrastructure for the Amish. If there is free Wi-Fi access in an establishment, wouldn’t it attract more business? The Massena News would like to have a list of every establishment in town providing Free Wi-Fi access. Visit massenanews.thelocalseeker.com and place your comment as to where one can get free Wi-Fi access. While you’re there, comment if you think a more interactive website for the Massena News would be more beneficial to the community. Mention which features you would like available on the website. Development is underway for a more interactive and engaging website. If I build it, will you come? The Massena News wants to know.

Local Business Profile by Seeker Dude John Lucio
Escape to the Massena Public Library We all choose the life we lead. Moreover, we all also choose whether to be bad, mediocre, good, or great at what we do with that life. Anyone can be good at anything--take their lemons and turn ‘em into lemonade—and that’s…well…good. But to be great takes an entirely different breed of person to want to go all that extra distance. Unique. Driven.
( Very) Special. Especially in these difficult times!—why bend over backwards to contribute, when producing lemonade will be sufficient? (Especially in a collapsing economy when being sufficient can pass as more than just sufficient!) The hassles never seem worth the effort to achieve greatness to an ordinary person. But an extraordinary person cannot settle for anything less. He confronts challenge head-on, is not afraid of defeat, and never gets dissuaded from his moral fortitude and sense of obligation to society. And that is why we have a great library—because of great leadership, from the dedicated board of trustees and staff members, and from all the support of the town board, but especially from whom this article and interview is the focus on: library director Paul L. Schaffer. Here is a great leader who spent 27 years of his life making a great and lasting contribution to
our community. The library is awesome! It is the 2nd largest library in Northern NY, meeting and exceeding expectations. Massena should be proud—and, most of all, thankful! Mr. Schaffer’s work will continue to have, for many years after his retirement, a positive impact on the lives of many citizens, because of his 27 years of dedication, devotion, and service to community. Infrastructures & services l i k e that of o u r library do not just happen. These are made by the hard work of many, and materialized by the persistent vision and determination of great leaders. Massena is very fortunate to have a library that’s designed to crush negative thought patterns attempting to defeat a person in life. Since we all need to just ‘Get away’ once in a while, this is a great environment to do it in— especially for our youths. One can escape at the Library, and free their spirit. The Massena Public library opens the mind, stimulates the intellect, frees the attitude, and ultimately gives hope by making it possible for one to find one’s own way. The attention to detail and spotless cleanliness is evidence of the organizational methods and interest taken in
them. It is a sign of perfection. Visit…and be amazed at all that’s available. Literature, art, music, v i d e o, business, technology (old and new), and much more. Read their calendar of events. There is so much in which to participate, enjoy and explore! Sit at a computer and surf the web, or take your own laptop, Droid, etc. to connect. Utilize their many services—copying, faxing, etc. This library is modern and elegant. There are too many people afraid of technology in our brave new world. It’s good to have a library e m b r a c i n g technology-preparing our children for their future. Much is expected from those who have been blessed with the capacity and the power to achieve greatness.Mr. Schaffer has spent a lifetime delivering what has been bestowed upon him.
Thank you, Mr. Schaffer!

Affordable Southern Cooking, with Northern Hospitality The Ponderosa Steakhouse is our family favorite. That’s our kind of eating and atmosphere right there—I tell you what. We just love it! We love the food, we love the staff, we love the sheer volume of selections, and we especially love the price. Looking at the number of cars in the parking lot with Canadian license plates, guess even across the river, word gets around where to go for some great Southern cooking and Southern hospitality. Well, last Tuesday our son Josh turned 10. And where did he want his birthday meal? Yup, sure enough: The Ponderosa. Wow…the children were all so happy. We get there, and it turns out that children 12 and under eat free that day. More happiness. Me & wife Julia each took on the ‘The Great Steak vs Shrimp Showdown’ with buffet. Our teenage son, his girlfriend, and our other 4 children all had the buffet. There were 8 of us. Me & Julia drank water; everyone else, soft drinks and milk. The price for this enormous, all-you-can-eat meal for the whole family: just $45. Half of us were eating for free. The steak was juicy, sizzling, and delicious; the garlic butter grilled shrimp, mouthwatering. Very satisfying. And the buffet, oh my goodness—so much to choose from. I always tell my children “Don’t take it just because it’s there. You take it, you eat it!” And that they do. I practice what I preach. And I do that gladly. From the buffet I got meatballs, chicken wings, baked beans, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, rolls, nachos and hot melted cheese. Julia, an entirely different wild assortment to suit her own taste buds. The whole meal for me was like a desert, so at this point I gotta try to resist the desert buffet and get some fruit instead. Mmmmnnnnn… peaches, strawberry dipped bananas, pineapple. Yummy. I’m in heaven, ya’ll. The children are creating a ruckus. They’re in heaven too, making joyful noises. The staff, spearheaded by Shift Coordinator Sandy Douglas (5 in all), brought Josh a huge piece of chocolate cake with a MOUNTAIN of ice cream, singing happy birthday. Josh was very happy. Thank you, Ponderosa! Massena, the Ponderosa, on 341 Main Street, is a great family restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious; price is fabulous; the service, super friendly. Leave a nice tip. They earn it.

Slam Dunk Favorites (Family Features) When March Madness tips off, I know it’s time for some fun foods that will be slamdunk favorites at game-watching parties. Chips and other munchies are always good, but I thought I’d spice things up a bit with these two recipes – they’re easy to hold and eat while cheering on our favorite underdogs. Tex-Mex seasonings liven up these mini meatballs, which are great for dipping in salsa and sour cream. Putting them on skewers makes them fun for guests of all ages. Smoked almonds team up with creamy Carnation to make a great blue cheese dip for wings, veggies or crackers. Be sure to have plenty of napkins! For more ways to enjoy the hoopla of March Madness, including recipes, nutritional information and tips, visit www.TheCookingMilk.com.

Female Fix-ItYo u r s e l f Revolution Solve Five C o m m o n Household Problems As March 8th was the International women’s day, we thought it was appropriate to give women empowering tips about common household problems to commemorate the occation. (Family Features) From pink screwdrivers and mini toolboxes to a surge of female-targeted home improvement sites and guidebooks, the fix-it-yourself revolution has come for women in the U.S. More empowered females are taking on household problems themselves instead of spending the money to hire a plumber, electrician or contractor. In fact, a recent study by the Medelia Monitor showed that more than 60 percent of women are more likely to tackle the work on their own. The majority of these women (63 percent) are being more resourceful to avoid the high costs

of hiring a professional. And 71 percent of women say the desire to "fix-it-myself" stems from the empowering feeling of having the knowledge to improve their home. Sound familiar? If you'd like to empower yourself and join the fix-it-yourself revolution, start by picking up a few affordable tools and products to tackle quick fixes. Here are easy tips for solving five common household problems: * Unstick sticky windows by opening them and rubbing wax or spraying silicone into the tracks on both sides. Move the window up and down several times to work the wax or silicone lubricant into the frame. * Fix squeaky wood or tile floors by sprinkling baby powder on the surface of the floor that's squeaking. Then place a chisel between the boards and gently hammer the top to pry up the tile or floorboard. Sprinkle more baby powder underneath the board to seal the excess space causing the squeaking. * If your drains are draining slowly or clogged completely, try a de-clogging gel that clears the toughest clogs at a fraction of the cost of a plumber house call. Liquid-Plumr's new Penetrex Gel is a fastacting, powerful formula that can clear the toughest clogs in just seven minutes.
THE LOCAL SEEkER (I-5, pg. 6)
* Mend unsightly holes or tears in your window screens by using a screwdriver to straighten the bends in the mesh and dabbing clear nail polish to seal the hole. Allow it to dry. Then repeat the polish application until the hole is completely sealed. * A wobbly table leg may seem hard, but it's a surprisingly easy repair. Just figure out how it's attached to the seat. Then either screw the leg back into its socket or glue it back into place. Fix-it resources abound online and at your local bookstore. But here's a few to get you started: * Facebook.com/LiquidPlumr: Most clogged drains are caused by hair. Get tips on how to keep all drains clear and while you're there, enter the Big Locks Rock! Contest before December 15th for a chance to win a trip for four to L.A. to get haircuts by a celebrity stylist. * BeJane.com: A site where women of all ages and skill levels can find answers to home improvement questions and connect with others for inspiration and advice. * "Dare to Repair" by Julie Sussman: This book offers a "do-it-herself" guide to fixing almost anything in the home.
