Editorial...
“Know everything you can about what you’re doing”— Fred Trump (Donald’s father) said. “The more you learn, the more you realize how much you don’t know.”— Donald Trump said. Great people share their wisdom so that others may learn, be happy, and be prosperous. I believe that America will continue to be the great prosperous nation that our forefathers have designed it to be. It’s not that we are no longer a great nation. It’s that many other nations have learned economics 101 from us, and have learned from our wisdom, and applied it to their own business ethics; hence, the financial strengths of those nations have come up to par with our own. Now, many nations—America included—are on the same level in the race. Who’s going to take the lead is yet to be seen. (My thoughts and prayers go out to Japan right now! May God help them back up!) Business models all across the globe continue to change drastically at the helm of the internet, and since the advent of eCommerce, the playing field is wide open. Anyone can get in the race. And, I mean anyone! There is a free flow of commerce spanning not just across our nation but across the entire globe. So, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, I thought it would be a good idea to interview the Chamber. Why?—Well, I already knew they were doing a great job, but I wanted to write about it, because the Chamber of Commerce has a moral obligation to their community to be the best that they possibly can. Right? Absolutely. With so many of our brave men & women serving in the Armed Forces, it is incumbent upon us all to do the MISCELLANEOUS absolute best we can with what we have—for each other, for our community, for America—for our troops, who are serving gallantly, for the sacrifices they have made. It’s important. Many men & women in uniform have paid the ultimate price. We must do everything in our power to keep our nation strong. Work smart. Work Hard. Market. Network. Buy. Sell. Trade. Keep the faith, and keep it going. “Semper Fi”, as the Marines say—which is Semper Fidelis (Latin): always faithful. Back in the day, as a member of the elite 1st Ranger Battalion, I’ve always enjoyed the times I spent working with Marines. The Ranger motto “Sua Sponte” (Latin): of their own accord, means that Rangers serve because they want to—that they are enduring more than others because they want to, out of their own free will—not because they have to! Every unit in our Armed Forces has a meaningful and significant motto to live by. So, yeah, the ethics of leaders and others in positions of influence & power back here in the States are decisively important. So, yeah, the Massena News wanted to know—for you, the Reader (who may or may not have already known)—about the leadership in the Massena Chamber of Commerce. And, I am happy to report that it is as morally strong as it should be. Our troops would be proud!

Local Business Profile by Seeker Dude John Lucio
Introducing the Massena Chamber of Commerce It is with great honor that the Massena News is introducing the Massena Chamber of Commerce and the board of Directors thereof (not all of whom were present at the photo shoot). “The Chamber is working tirelessly to support its members and to support the community of Massena to make it a better place to live,” said Michael Gleason, the Executive Director. He, along with the President (Susan Flynn) and the 1st Vice President (Eric Gustafson) of the Chamber had much to say when interviewed on March 17 for this article that you’re reading, of which was an honor to conduct and report upon. During the interview, they exuded the pride of the Chamber’s past, enthusiasm towards its future, and loyalty to its community. They mirror the ideals of their long lineage of predecessors that traces back almost 80 years. (This May will be the Chamber’s 80th anniversary). It is in the optimism, energy, motivation, and vigor of this spirit that these three spearhead the Chamber in helping businesses embrace problems and turn those problems into challenge, and challenge into success. Even today, when one can only wonder how many communities across our nation are collapsing and are on the brink of insolvency, Massena remains strong. Massena’s viability, it goes without saying, should be partially (if not mostly) attributed to the leadership of the Chamber, and the
times, no doubt. Still, we should count our blessings and be thankful— especially thankful for the persistency through which the Chamber leadership and board of directors have managed to promote business & tourism in our area. Recognize what the Chamber has done for this town—that they represent
hard work of the board members. Recognize, Massena! While the Chamber has been continually attributing praise & recognition to local entities achieving success, let’s recognize that the leadership of the Chamber has done so much for our community–for it is only when we acknowledge the positive in our lives that we can take focus off the negative and place it where it belongs. The Chamber has done much, and has much more to offer. If you don’t already know your Chamber, then get to know them! They’ve got a wonderful, interactive, and informative website. Giving you the address is too easy and says nothing; instead, search for (just about) anything Massena NY and you’ll see their listing at the top of the page. That alone speaks volumes. The Chamber leadership has paved the way for revenue to find its way into Massena, to come into our businesses, and to foster the creation of jobs and opportunity in our community. These have been hard
the interest of our community. The Chamber continually promotes Massena through advertisements and numerous events throughout the year, reaching out to neighboring communities around Massena and across the border, and providing entertainment for those people coming into town. And with the strong Canadian dollar that it is, eager to part hands for a product or service well worth the exchange, there is an increasing amount of commerce coming into Massena. If you’re a business owner, you should know that there are so many benefits available to you through the Chamber—too many to list here. Get to know your Chamber.
Join the Chamber today and unleash a world of possibilities!

Small Business tips and tricks
Is it Time to Work for Yourself? (Family Features) The tight job market has a growing number of people looking to become their own boss. In a September 2010 Citibank small business survey, 81 percent of small business owners still like or love what they do, and 75 percent said they would start their businesses again, even knowing about the challenges they would face. But starting a business in a recession isn't always easy. Getting a bank loan is tough and credit card companies are reducing lines of credit. One way to feed your entrepreneurial drive in this economy is to consider a career in direct selling. Direct sales is a dynamic industry - one that many entrepreneurs and stay-at-home parents are diving into. According to the Direct Selling Association, more than 15 million people sold about $30 billion in products and services in the US in 2008. Nearly one-third of those sales were for personal items such as cosmetics, jewelry, and skin care. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Direct Selling Association Education Foundation (DSAEF) have partnered to help educate those interested in pursuing direct sales for themselves. Here are three questions the BBB recommends asking if you're thinking about a career in direct sales: • Do I have what it takes to be a good salesman? Most natural sales people are outgoing, comfortable speaking in public, and selfmotivated. But those are skills that can also be acquired. Before diving in, make arrangements to shadow several direct sellers so you can see what it takes to be successful. • Is this a product I can believe in? Genuine excitement is catching, so if you really believe in the product, a lot of the work is already done for you. And the opposite is true, too - if you wouldn't buy the product for yourself, you'll have a very hard time selling it to anyone else. • Do I risk financial loss by joining the company? Legitimate companies generally have low start-up costs - typically less than $100. It's also very important to understand the company's buy-back policy so that you will know your rights should you choose to quit the business. Direct selling can be very rewarding. Denise Pagano from New York did her homework and decided to become an Independent Beauty Advisor for L'Bel, a premium skin care and cosmetics company. "Once I tried the products, I couldn't wait to start sharing them with my friends," she said. "I felt good about working for a company that's had over 40 years of success, and it's turned out to be a great fit for me. I get to set my own hours, I can sell online, one on one, or at L'Bel Beauty Parties - whatever works best for me."

Denise has also benefited from the coaching and education provided by L'Bel, as well as the online support offered. "In my Beauty Advisor Office Suite, I can communicate with people, manage my business and access more training and resources." You're engaged! Now what? The top five wedding planning questions to answer first (ARA) - Holiday season is engagement season. But after he pops the question and she says "yes," the reality of wedding planning sets in and that feeling of joyful romance can fade as quickly as Christmas lights on an overloaded circuit. Here are the top five questions you will need to answer to make your wedding planning journey a pleasant experience. " A f t e r Valentine's Day, the holidays are the most popular time of year for couples to become engaged," s a y s wedding planning e x p e r t Raymond Miller of My We d d i n g Reception Ideas.com, a leading o n l i n e resource for brides seeking unique wedding favors, decorations, and gifts. "Many brides-to-be who get engaged over the holidays will begin their planning efforts in the first months of the new year. Knowing where to start can be overwhelming."
says. "Many couples only spend more on buying a house or car, or funding their children's college educations." Setting - and sticking to - a budget for your wedding is an essential step toward starting your married life on a sound financial footing. Determine where your funding will come from - if your parents can help or if you'll be paying on your own - and decide how much you can afford to spend without going into debt. 2. What season works? Virtually as soon as you announce you're engaged, people start asking what the wedding date will be.To make answering that question as simple as possible, start by considering in what season you would like to be married. Would you prefer a spring ceremony? Or do you dream of a holiday wedding? By narrowing down the season, and selecting it well in advance, you'll be able to secure a date that will work for everyone.
3. Where do we want to get married and have our reception? Will you have a destination wedding? Or do you want to keep it local? While wedding planning is usually most successful when done well in advance, if you're interested in a destination wedding, planning far ahead is essential. Popular destinations book quickly in prime wedding seasons and you may find venues in the destination of your choice are booked a year or more in advance. 4. What kind of venue do you want? Do you dream of a big church wedding? Or saying your "I do's" in a beautiful natural setting? Perhaps you want your reception to be in a grand hotel. Knowing the type of venue you desire will help you refine your options and choose a specific location down the road.
Brides should begin their planning by answering five basic questions, Miller advises. 1. What is our budget? "Funding your wedding can be one of the most expensive undertakings you'll tackle in your life together as a couple," Miller

Is it important to you to be married by your own church's minister? Or are you OK with a justice of the peace? Do you fantasize about being joined in marriage by a ship's captain? Or does your mother have her heart set on seeing you married by the rabbi who was there at your bat mitzvah? Just as popular venues book quickly, favorite officiants also have their dance cards fill fast for popular wedding seasons. As soon as you know who you would like to officiate at your wedding, it might pay to approach him or her and find out about future availability. "Of course there are many, many things to consider when planning a wedding," Miller says. "But these five points are the basics you must address and everything else about your wedding will be planned around your answers to these questions. Once you've made these initial decisions, it will be easier to refine your options and decide exactly what will make your wedding wonderful, memorable and perfect for you."

Eight tax tips that will save you time and money (ARA) - When all the holiday dust settles, tax time begins for millions of Americans. Regardless of when you file, follow these tips to make preparing your 2010 taxes easier. 1. Good record keeping cuts down time spent doing your taxes and may be required if you receive an Internal Revenue Service notice or are audited. Records should include information that impacts your federal tax return, including a copy of last year's return. 2. Don't procrastinate. Rushing encourages errors that can result in lost time and money, and ultimately a rejected return. If you haven't kept good tax records, you'll likely need extra time to find documents. 3. Hundreds of changes are made to federal tax law every year. Dedicating a few minutes to learning about major changes can save you money and time. At minimum, learn about the tax breaks still available in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, including credits for energy improvements to your home and "green" cars. Start with the IRS' website at www.irs.gov and click on "Individuals." You don't have to be an accountant to understand the information. Do-it-yourself tax preparation solutions also offer helpful information; the "Tax Information" tab at www.taxact.com summarizes key changes for 2010 returns. 4. File and pay on time, or pay late fees and interest. While state deadlines vary, 2010 federal returns are due April 18, 2011, (April 15 is a federal holiday). Can't file by then? File Form 4868 for a six-month filing extension and pay as much as of your taxes as possible by April 18 to minimize interest and penalties. If you can't pay all of your tax bill totaling $25,000 or less, apply for a monthly payment agreement via Form 9465.
THE MASSENA NEWS (I-5, pg. 8)
5. Do your taxes online or download tax preparation software, even if you have a complicated return or have never prepared your taxes. "Tax law can be complicated, but doing your own taxes doesn't have to be," says TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. "The best solutions go well beyond completing tax forms and doing the math for you. They're affordable, easy, identify potential tax-saving opportunities, alert you of possible errors and missing data, and provide answers if you have questions. They even help you strategize for next year." 6. Do comparison shopping before choosing a tax preparation solution. Check out the free products. Are there fees for certain forms or to e-file? What help is free and what do you have to pay for? Will it walk you through tax implications of life changes? Can you import data? Are you guaranteed accuracy and a maximum refund? Can you try it risk-free? If you're using a paid product, at what point in the process do you have to pay? 7. Electronically file. Nearly 70 percent of all federal returns were efiled last year. Unlike paper filers, you'll receive e-mail confirmation when the IRS receives and accepts or rejects your return, usually within 48 hours of efiling. You'll need last year's adjusted gross income or your five-digit self-select e-file PIN used last year to e-file. If you're claiming the First-time Homebuyer or Adoption Credit, the IRS requires you to mail certain documentation with your return. 8. Want your federal refund in as few as eight days? E-file and select direct deposit. You can track your refund status and receive your refund at least one week earlier than those requesting checks.
More tax tips and information can be found at www.irs.gov. TaxACT Free Federal Edition allows all taxpayers to prepare, print and e-file an IRS return free and offers free tax help via e-mail at www.taxact.com.

Tech Seeker, by John Lucio
Isn't Technology great, Massena? I love technology!--and I love how quickly it's evolving. But many people fear technology--because it’s evolving so quickly! The purpose of this column is not only to help educate and entertain but also to help dispel the myths driven by technology and to help discern the difference in the drive between hype and authenticity. We'll focus on technology not as the concept of evil that many fear it represents, but as an object that can be used for good in our world, and ultimately for what it is hoped to achieve in our lives. Technology is here to help us, not to conquer us. The remote control spares us time. Touch-tone phone takes less time than rotary. Sending email is faster than postal. The Blogosphere delivers news almost as fast as it’s occurring. The more technology evolves, the more free time we have; and, the more free time we have, the more we do; and the more we do, the more the reason for more things invented to free up more time. That could be a n o t h e r reason why many fear te c h n o l o g y. That and, of course, the potential for abuse. Because of human nature, the potential for abuse with technology is huge. Think of the Rutgers University student who had committed suicide after discovering that his sexual encounters were allegedly secretly taped by two other students and broadcast live over the Internet last Sept. 19. I wonder how many other similar incidents have occurred in the 6 months since. Camera-phones have ruined many lives. On the other hand, police brutality is down. I own a Looxcie (it’s an innovative hands-free Bluetooth earphone/camcorder that is used for phone conversations and continuously recording video, and at the push of a button on the device, I can upload 30 second video clips straight to YouTube via 3G from almost anywhere). Visit Looxcie.com. It’s amazing. Moreover, with a wealth of information at our fingertips, we can get statistics on just about anything. Yet, the legitimacy of many sources of information is often called into question. We don't know what/who to believe anymore, especially in terms of political news! People tend to put stories on the Blogosphere and send out chain email that are often wrong. The comments people leave on forums everywhere oftentimes spread myths,

create confusion, and incite animosity-even hatred. Remember all those ridiculous conspiracy theories about the Swine Flu shot? Goodness gracious, supposedly, this shot was part of a sinister plan by our Government to eradicate the lives of millions of our own people. Yeah right. Those theories were just silly--but myriad people believed them! Thank goodness that Flu didn't escalate, for without the shot, millions would have perished. Hence, the enemy of our nation isn’t always who we think it is. That being said, people, today’s lesson involves three things to consider before going online: 1. DON'T BE GULLIBLE. There are evil people in this world whose sole purpose for existing is to poison your mind. Don't take anything you read, see, or hear for granted. Pictures, video, audio, and literature can all be altered to purport something entirely different than what was originally recorded. Just because you see a photo or video of people carrying signs does not mean that the words in those signs were there during the actual recording. Fabrications like that are sometimes used to stir up hatred and/or to lure people into joining their cause. Look closely at what you see, but also notice what you do not see. The truth is often in what is not being shown, or in what is not being said, or in what is not being spelled out for you. Omitting certain pieces of fact is a tactic utilized in most successful deception campaigns deployed through modern day technology the world over. 2. BE CAREFUL. There are myriad scams. Some are to steal your money; others, to involve your participation. Something's just not right if you're going to be paid a lot for little effort--like receiving product and then shipping it elsewhere. Watch out when someone from another country
appears g e n u i n e l y interested in your services/products but tells you that—for whatever sob story reason--the only way he can pay you is if you receive
the money someone owes him into your account, then keep a portion of it for yourself and send the rest to his bank account in his country. Next thing you know, every detail about your life, and every move you make, is being recorded onto audio & video, and then, nevertheless, you are arrested for money laundering and assisting terrorists—just for doing something stupid. There are myriad laws, which you have no idea about, involving technology, and if you break one, you will be arrested and severely punished or fined! Ignorance of the law is no excuse. So, be extra careful of the things in which you participate. Do not participate in cyber-harassment or spreading hatred. Before going on a date with that hottie you met online, check her ID for date of birth. Be especially careful what you say online—it could easily be taken out of context! Keep your criticisms to yourself, because anything you put on the internet sticks around forever. If you damage someone's name or reputation online, you will not be able to deny it. Do not be intoxicated when going online. 3. TRUST NO ONE. Just because your mother sends you email doesn't mean the information is legit. She might be forwarding email that was forwarded to her. She might even be sending you a virus! Moreover, just because an email indicates it's coming from someone you know doesn't mean it is. Put your mouse over (or double-click) the name of who the email is From to see the address of who it's really from, to see who it’s really coming from. Before responding to emails coming from PayPal, or your bank, etc., carefully examine the source of the email address, and the hyperlinks therein. Just because you see www.paypal.com doesn't mean that when you click it, it's going to open at that location. (No cyber criminal is going to tell you to login to your paypal account at www.IamGoingToRobYou.com for instance!) The intent of this article is not to make you paranoid but to remind you to be vigilant at all times. Not only is Big Brother always watching but also many others. So if your actions in public might appear questionable, just stop; else, your spouse, family & friends will see it on YouTube. Lastly, there’s a scripture that says it best: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”-- Matthew 10:16

(Family Features) As much fun as it is to make fancy treats, sometimes simple really is better. This Easter I've decided to keep things sweet and simple when it comes to making desserts. These Easter Egg Treats are a fun twist on marshmallow crispy bars - the kids can help shape the eggs and sprinkle them with pretty toppings. It will be a little messy, but what a fun memory to make together! Bark candies are traditional around other holidays, so why not Easter, too? They couldn't be simpler to make, and the creamy white morsels and colorful jelly beans taste - and look - great together. To get more sweet inspiration for your Easter celebrations, visit www.tollhouse.com.

(ARA) - In today's tight economy, freshening outdated home interiors can seem like a daunting, budgetbreaking task. The good news is that you don't have to spend a lot to remove eyesores such as unattractive paneling, too-dark cabinets or that not-so-charming "retro" fireplace mantel and surround. Instead of living with these design disasters from another era, there's an easy and inexpensive fix paint. Quality interior coatings, applied with the proper applicators, can go a long way in giving those design debacles a quick and easy facelift for hundreds of dollars less than a full-scale renovation. But before you start your paint project, it's important to know the key to success is selecting not only a quality coating, but applying it with a quality painting applicator. If an inferior applicator is used, even the most outstanding paint may not provide the smooth finish you
desire. Using superior applicators can streamline a variety of interior painting projects, saving you time and money, and ultimately helping you achieve a fabulous end result. "Paint has long been considered one of the great budget boosters for decorating projects," says Andrew Marsden, product manager for Purdy applicators. "When you combine a first-rate paint with a quality painting applicator, you can transform a variety of surfaces - from outdated cabinetry to knotty pine paneling - giving any room in the house a fresh look." When to use a mini roller Premium applicators come in a number of shapes and sizes; however one of today's most popular choices is the mini roller. Purdy has a variety of innovative mini roller choices that are versatile, lightweight, can quickly and easily deliver a perfect finish with smooth rolling action and have the ability to reach tight spaces. These combined features make them the ideal applicator for an endless number of projects, from painting walls, doors and cabinets, to freshening up tables, chairs and even bedroom furniture. When to use a brush Even with all the advantages the mini roller offers, a paint brush is still the hero for most projects especially when trim work is needed. A quality brush is a must when you're aiming to end up with a professional-looking appearance. Most consumers might not know it's also important to use a brush

that's the appropriate size for your painting project. So, be certain to keep these tips in mind: * Use 1- and 2-inch brushes for trim work, touch-ups and smaller projects such as window frames and moldings. Angular 1and 2-inch brushes are great for painting around windows. * Choose brushes measuring 2 1/2 and 3 inches for medium-size surfaces such as cabinets, baseboards, doors or steps. * Paint larger surfaces, like walls, ceilings, and floors with brushes ranging in size from 3 1/2 inches to 6 inches. "Whether you're using a brush or mini roller, the right applicator can make or break any painting project," Marsden says. "By paying as much attention to the size and quality of applicator used, in addition to the paint, you're guaranteed to end up with a fantastic finished project that you'll be able to admire and enjoy for years to come."
