Last month the Cornwall & The Counties Arts and Culture Council held its first official board meeting and elected its Executive: Chair, Stephen Davies, Vice-Chair, Sandra Vander Veer, Secretary, Betty Healey and Treasurer, Chuck Leclair. “This initial step signals an important move forward for the Arts and Culture Council and its ability to serve the arts and culture sector,” said Bruce Davis, Culture Development Coordinator. “Electing an Executive has given them structure and methodology, and that’s important for any organization that hopes to advance in a positive and productive way.” The council can now begin to examine governance and bylaws required to keep them on course and moving forward. When asked about his new duties as Chair of the Cornwall & The Counties Arts and Culture, Stephen
THE LOCAL SEEKER (December 14 - pg. 3)
Davies had this to say, “My role as chair is to assist in providing a context for 13 voices to become 1, and along with the board, to galvanize the arts community in Cornwall, Akwesasne and the counties. We can converge as one group with various streams, such as visual arts, music, dance, digital media, in order to repair, strengthen and drive the dynamic, diverse, creative talent that we have in the area. If we can achieve that goal, then arts can become an economic driver for the community, and the community can in turn drive the arts. As a partner with SD&G CFDC we are excited about being able to open doors to the artists in order to provide them with services and or funding to help them grow their business. I believe that as a small part of the regional talent base, we can work in partnership with businesses at large to enhance the tapestry of the region.” Thank you Carolyn! I would like to take a moment to thank our editor, Carolyn Hersey, who has been a wonderful part of the Local Seeker team in 2012. She is stepping down, and I would like to wish her all the best with her future endeavours. MY NAME IS JASON SETNYK, AND THIS IS MY EYE ON SOCIETY! Naturally Delicious ... with the Health Nut
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” I love this Christmas season! I was out shopping this week and I couldn’t help but notice all of the happy faces. So many people humming and singing to the music in the stores. This is so nice to see, it seems like the last couple of weeks until the 25th really allow everyone to take a deep breath, be thankful and just truly appreciate what they have. A great time of the year….Merry Christmas to all!!! This week, I took part in the Sheconnex Studio Wine and Cheese event. I am so thrilled to be a part of this great local organization, geared for all women. I was happy to bring some great, wholesome, organic appetizers for all to enjoy. It makes me feel fantastic to be able to share healthy food with others. I am privileged and thrilled to attend The Biggest Loser final weigh-in extravaganza at Nav Can, Friday, December 14th, hosted by Dr. Marie-Josee Cardinal and Tom Irvine (Quest PTS gym). I can’t wait to see all of the incredible transformations of these amazing participants. In my opinion, they are all winners! Having taken the time to change their lives and learn about health from the inside/out is a great accomplishment. I’m sure that there are friendships that have been created for a lifetime as well. Congratulations to all of you! Best of luck to the ultimate winner….you are all so deserving! Just a reminder that my cooking seminars will be starting up again in February 2013. I have gift certificates available for loved ones for Christmas…the gift of health. The seminar consists of healthy recipe demos, taste-testing, information and tips. The participants receive all recipes, information and my own personal diet plan via e-mail after the seminar. It is a delicious afternoon that can easily be enjoyed with family, friends and coworkers. We will start up our juicing challenges again in February 2013 as well. A great way to learn the basics of juicing! Again, all recipes, demos and taste-testing are sent via e-mail after the seminar. Juicing allows your intestines to take a well-deserved break, allowing awesome, wholesome nutrients to enter your bloodstream and rejuvenate your body. Here are some great Christmas gifts that you can get loved ones wanting to learn juicing in the New Year, all available for great prices on Amazon.ca. (Breville juicer compact fountain)

I remember last year I wrote about how much difficulty I was experiencing at getting into the spirit; this year is different. First off, I am in a new city, my son will be home for the holidays after being away at college for the first time, and this is when I start new traditions.
The tree is up but not decorated yet. I am waiting for my son Brad to return. Our tradition is to decorate the tree, while drinking eggnog and with Christmas movies playing. Wasn’t sure he wanted to, but received a text letting me know how much he is looking forward to it. My cat still thinks the tree is to climb up and I must say, even without decorations it looks beautiful standing in front of my patio door. This is also the first year I will be away from Cornwall for the holidays. I decided several weeks ago that with all of my traveling, taking another jaunt on the 401 during the busiest season was not a good idea. I’ll miss seeing my family but they understand. I will extend an invitation to my niece who is also in Kingston and will be working through the holidays since she is a nurse without time off, so hopefully she can join us. We will be in town shortly before the holidays to exchange gifts and of course we have extended phone calls shortly after we awake on Christmas morning. I will miss attending mass at my Church, St. Francis de Sales. I am not familiar with times and locations in Kingston, but will try and find out and hopefully be able to attend, but it won’t be the same as being crowded with my family listening to the beautiful voices of the Christmas choir and seeing so many familiar faces. With the move, I parted with some of my treasured Christmas decorations, so it when we open those boxes up, we will see what we still have. Of course I could not part with my Pommier Angels. They are the pride of my tree. I also kept those that were gifts and special collectibles that I gathered over the years.
Set for Thursday, December 20th at Galaxy Cinemas.
It is only 2 weeks until Christmas, and so the preparations have begun. I get in the spirit by overloading on Christmas movies. You could say it is my guilty pleasure. I also enjoy listening to Christmas music and I am pleased to see that several stations are turning into all holiday music during this festive time.
Annual Team Cornwall Year in Review Meeting

Getting Ready for Christmas
Mark Boileau and Gilles Latour hold tickets for this great event.
Article by Bob Peters
It's December, which means it's time once again for the ever-popular Team Cornwall annual Year-inReview meeting. For the 14th consecutive year, the highlight of the meeting will be a recap of the year's economic activity by Mark Boileau, Manager of Cornwall Economic Development.
Doors will be open at 7:00 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:30 a.m. sharp on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the Galaxy Cinemas on Second Street East. "It is always important to pause and recognize the hard work of so many of our corporate citizens," said Mark Boileau. "The local economy had a number of highlights in 2012, with significant activity across industrial, commercial and residential sectors." Mayor Bob Kilger is expected to welcome a number of out-of-town guests to the meeting.
"Cornwall's success is turning heads in boardrooms across Canada," said Mayor Kilger. "There are a number of people from other parts of Canada and the USA who will be visiting Cornwall and taking this opportunity to get a closer look at what is happening here."
Team Cornwall Achievements
Along with the presentation from Cornwall Economic Development, Team Cornwall will also be highlighting its members' efforts and accomplishments over the past year.
"Team Cornwall works to support Cornwall Economic Development and its efforts to attract new investment to Cornwall," said Gilles Latour, Chair of Team Cornwall. "We always look forward to this meeting as a way of seeing exactly how we are doing and to hopefully get a glimpse of what is down the road."
Open to All
The meeting is open to all - regardless of Team Cornwall membership. A light breakfast will be served at 7am, followed by the regular meeting.
Local Artist and Vendor Bazaar
A small bazaar, organized by the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre, will greet attendees as they enter and exit the theatre. Finish up your holiday shopping by finding unique gift ideas from over a dozen local artists and vendors. Let's support local business! This year the bazaar will feature 12 tables showcasing the wares of over 20 artisans. These include: • • • • • •
Sara Muir of Tasty Alternatives • Tracey Doogan of Red Wind Studio Josee Bailey of Steward Bags • Local Author Jennifer DeBruin Tony Lacroix of Love Love Food • Carrie Wattie Roy of Royal Carpets Tracey Lynn Chisholm of OBO Studio • Nicki Fontaine of Sweet Creation Chocolates Emily MacLeod of OBO Studio • Rose Desnoyers of the Centre Culturel Local musicians including Roxanne Delage, Robert Cote, The Shiners, Melanie Brulee, The Brigadoons, Winston Marley, Elly May and Switchgear

“ About The House”
Dear Joe, I had a “contractor” (and I use the term loosely) into my home to install some porcelain tile around the bathtub and on the floor. I did all the prep work: plywood, waterproofing etc, and did a pretty good job, a job any tile guy would find acceptable. All this guy had to do was come in and tile. I supplied all the material and would’ve supplied anything else he required to do a quality job. I left for work on the day he came to tile. Upon my return I was shocked to see the quality of work this man had done on my house. It is an understatement to say that he misrepresented himself, and now I’m stuck with this bathroom tiling job that I am truly embarrassed to show my family and friends. My wife is upset, I’m upset, is there any way to repair the damage done to my home and how? Or should I seek some sort of damages from this guy? Tiled Out
Seeker Spotlight -The Local Portrait-
These photos of Bailey were taken by Jason Setnyk Photography.
Well, Tiled Out, That is quite a fix that you find yourself in. My deepest condolences go out to you because I know the frustration, anger and disappointment that go along with a job not so well-done. I have been on two ends of this unhappy triad; I’ve been the guy who’s paid for work that I am completely unsatisfied with, and also been the contractor who’s been asked into someone’s home to repair the damage done by a careless, heartless contractor.
At a time like this it’s terrible of me to say I told you so, so I won’t. I’ll just take this opportunity to tell everyone reading this that this is why I preach: never hire a contractor out of the blue. Get referrals. Talk to your dad, your boss, your bowling buddies, even your garbage collector. Find out who’s doing the best work around, and which contractors are making people happy. A satisfied customer is all the advertising a good contractor needs, but in order for that advertising to work, the consumer has to do his or her due diligence when hiring someone to work on their home. That’s how trust is built. You wouldn’t let a doctor you didn’t trust cut you open, so why would you let a contractor who hasn’t earned your trust to do the same thing to your second most valuable asset? But I digress… Back to your question. First, there’s not much you can do to fix it. If it’s that bad that you can’t live with it, the only remedy for a bad tile job is to rip it out and begin again. Problem with that is in ripping it off, you will also ruin all the careful prep work that you did before this all happened. More mess, more money, more time… As far as seeking reparations from this guy, all I can say to that is good luck. What you see as a waste of time and money, this guy sees as a hard day’s work and a well-earned paycheck. Giving you any money back is essentially taking food out of his kids’ mouths and clothes off his back; sorry to say, I doubt it’s going to happen. Yes, he screwed up. Yes, he took your money, but he - like you - has bills to pay and mouths to feed. He probably shouldn’t be in this line of work, but the best thing you can do is warn him that you are not satisfied. Take your complaints to a place that you can use them to protect other consumers: local retailers, the better business bureau, chamber of commerce. If you really need to see some money back, your last recourse will be to take him to small claims court. But be warned this is an arena that, if you are not familiar with, will prove to be a frustrating fruitless exercise in law 101. Yes, you’ll learn a lot, but you’ll probably not get much of your money back, and will end up spending more in the process. The hours spent preparing, copies, days off work - and all that even if you don’t hire a lawyer. If you hire a lawyer then it’s strictly about principal, but there’s a lot to be said for principal. Then again, principals never paid the bills…
Bailey, who adores animals, plans to become a zoologist. She loves fashion, makeup artistry, and volunteering at a nursing home. Her goal is to travel the world helping with the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned animals.
If you prepare yourself and handle everything on your own, you could hope to recoup about 50% of what you’ve lost. The courts are fair and will probably penalize you to some extent for not exercising your due diligence. Going forward, let this be a valuable lesson to us all that a little bit of leg work before starting a project will pay dividends in the long run. Thanks for your letter, all the best. HEADING For HAPPY with Sara Murphy
The light at the end of the trauma Unfortunately, one single experience can traumatize us to the point that we feel we are damaged goods and scarred forever. We see no way of getting past the pain of the experience and become entangled in our suffering. We are changed. The upside is that in an instant, all of that can change too. The Universe, or God, in their infinite wisdom, can bring a new circumstance into our lives that completely overhauls our outlook and in a totally unexpected way, heals the wounds of the past. The Universe always gives us what we need. Sometimes the delivery isn’t always pleasant. Years ago, I experienced a traumatic medical situation following the birth of my daughter that left me emotionally scarred and devastated. Our delivery physician put his own ego ahead of our well-being. His decisions resulted in unnecessary pain, humiliation, risk and post-op difficulties. I had no strength to speak up and my support system was nowhere to be found.
The very people who were supposed to be protecting me and caring for me failed. Years later, I found myself fighting to be heard in an emergency room in the Big Apple. As I wafted in and out of consciousness, I tried to state my case to the oncall physician and my boyfriend at the time. Neither LISTENED. My body had been out of whack for months. I had been experiencing insomnia, extreme fatigue, night sweats and now - blacking out. I was diagnosed with alcohol poisoning (after 2 mixed drinks) by the doc, and a “loser” by the boyfriend (who threatened to leave me in New York and return home) and was sent on my way. If a head and neck exam or more bloodwork had been ordered, they would have found my thyroglobulin tumour markers were off the charts. I had undiagnosed papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland and lymph nodes. My body had been going haywire because my thyroid was full of tumours. Again, the people who were supposed to be protecting me and looking out for me failed. BIG TIME. Then, I was lucky enough to get treatment. I say lucky because my hospital/doctor cancer experience was incredible. My doctors were kind, caring and gifted. They LISTENED. My nurses were compassionate and gentle. The technicians (who I came to know very well) always put me at ease. My cancer therapy program started me on a wonderful, new life journey. My family and my best friend (not boyfriend), became my new infallible circle of support. I also learned to speak up for myself and now always bring a family member in case I can’t. My cancer experience was emotionally healing. The medical community was no longer my nightmare. Hospitals, doctors, nurses, and techs became one massive, positive moving force in restoring not only my physical health but my faith in caregivers as healers and protectors. Now, about that faith in boyfriends….hmmm….that may need some more work. Sara Murphy is a freelance journalist, musician, cancer survivor, community cheerleader and mom. SOME CHRISTMAS GOODIES
I look forward all year to my special baking for Christmas. Some of my treasured recipes are passed to me by my beloved Mum, others I have collected from my friends and customers. The following recipes have been given to me years ago. I first made the cookies in 1993. Both are easy and good. The fudge can be made in just a few minutes and makes a great little hostess gift. Have fun baking and enjoy a great week! "

1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 3/4 cup chopped pecans 1 cup mixed red and green glace cherries 1 cup chopped dates (use a pair of kitchen scissors to snip the dates, it's faster and safer this way)
METHOD: -Cream the butter and brown sugar, add the egg and mix well. Stir in the buttermilk. -Sift the flour, baking soda and salt together. Stir this into the creamed mixture. -Chop the cherries, pecans and dates. Add them into the cookie batter. -Chill the batter for at least one hour. -Line cookies sheets with parchment paper and drop the cookie batter by cookie scoop or spoonfuls onto the cookie sheets. -Bake the cookies in a 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes or until they are lightly golden in colour. -Lift the baked cookies from the baking sheets and cool on wire cooling racks. Makes about 5 dozen cookies. The amount will depend on the size of the cookies. ENJOY!

POSTCARDS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BRAIN by Sandra Taylor Hedges
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS Finding your Creative Touchstone The amazing thing about the Human mind is the ability for it to find importance in simple objects. Look around your room at home and you will find little things that you have saved to remind you, when you see them, about a trip you took, a special day you had or even a gift that a friend or child gave you that has more emotional than monetary value. It is our nature it seems to give importance to things that will help us relive memories or events. Often in therapy a patient is asked to find an object that, when they hold it, will calm them down or help to focus their otherwise chaotic thoughts into some semblance of order. This method can also work with creative people who are frequently victim to their own jumbled thoughts. We creative people are filled with ideas. Ideas that often overwhelm our thoughts to the point we become paralyzed and unable to focus on anything. We start writing down something then while working on that an idea hits us and we start working on it until yet another idea comes along. We wander around never completing any one thing before starting to work on something else. I have found that a Touchstone will help me to relax and focus my thoughts long enough to complete everything I started. Understanding how this works is much easier than finding the Touchstone that will be able to do the trick. It is therefore important to take time to find this thing or things that will help to calm and focus the hundreds of creative ideas all crammed up trying to be heard.
So what does this Touchstone look like? It can look like whatever you want. If possible find something that can be carried in your pocket with you so it is available all the time like a small object or photo. It could be as simple as a plastic toy dancer, a photo of your favorite singer/song writer or a rock you picked up outside near the place you feel connected to. It could be an object of faith or something you made yourself to represent who you really are. You can even have more than one, perhaps one for your pocket and one for the studio that would be too big to carry around. I have a small amethyst rock that I carry in my pocket, this serves to remind me that I am grateful for being able to do the thing I love and this focuses me to keep on task. Another much larger Touchstone that I have is the Beach here in Myrtle Beach. Standing next to the ocean brings me back to the time in my life when I knew that no matter what, someday I would make my Art more than a hobby but what I do and who I am. Now it’s hard to carry that around in your pocket so I keep several favorite photos and a few beautiful sea shells I found around my home to touch when I am feeling insecure about my choices. Whatever the object is, whatever you decide will work for you, once you have it, use it. Hold it in your hand, touch it and reconnect with who you are and why you do what you do. Now that you are calmer and centered go make some Art!!
HAPPENING: This Saturday, December 15th Upcoming Exhibition:
Without Exception December 11th, 2012 to January 25th, 2013 Opening reception:
December 15th 2-4 pm
Exceptional Art From Beautiful Minds The Art Gallery (TAG) Cornwall is proud to present “Without Exceptions” from December 11th, 2012 to January 25th, 2013.
Without Exception: Exceptional Art from Beautiful Minds is an ongoing arts initiative for special needs students in the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.
Inspired by three special needs artists in her classroom at Notre Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place, art teacher Sarah Jaynes founded Without Exception in 2008 in order to highlight and share the talents of special needs artists within the CDSBEO. Today, in it’s fifth year, the program celebrates the artistic efforts of 37 artists from all over Eastern Ontario. Yearly themes keep them focused. This year they are proud to unveil 37, unique artworks of birds at The Art Gallery (TAG) Cornwall at 168 Pitt Street Cornwall, Ontario on December 15th from 2 to 4 pm.
Although similar, all of these artworks speak to the individuality of their creators. High quality acid free prints on paper and canvas as well as postcards, note cards, mugs and t-shirts are a few examples of merchandise available to purchase by contacting their website at www.withoutexception.ca . One hundred percent of the profit from the sale of these items will be donated to The Good Samartian Trust Fund which provides financial assistance to students and families within CDSBEO that have exhausted all other avenues of assistance. It addresses needs beyond what organizations such as food banks, snow suit funds and breakfast clubs can offer. Without Exception: Exceptional Art from Beautiful Minds seeks to increase the visibility of artists with special needs. Their name was chosen to highlight the fact that individuals with special needs are not exceptions, they are exceptional ! The Art Gallery (TAG) Cornwall invites you all to meet the Exceptional artists on December 15th from 2-4pm. The Art Gallery (TAG) Cornwall 168 Pitt Street, Cornwall ON Tel.: 613-938-7387 www.tagcornwall.ca

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS
The Gift Certificate It came wrapped in a beautiful ribbon, jewel tones of ruby and amber and emerald threads woven into the fabric.
The box was beautifully adorned with a tissue paper so delicate that I hesitated to touch it for fear of tearing the translucent skin. A hint of lavender tugged at my nose as I gently examined this beautiful package left for me deep inside my mother’s cedar chest. Someone had taken care and pleasure in wrapping this gift for me. I pulled at the ribbon, releasing the box from its grip; the ribbons fell gently to the side, cascading around the corners of the box. Eagerly I scratched at the paper and then, remembering its beauty, slowed myself down. I unfolded the paper carefully so as not to tear it, preserving every special touch that had been taken as it was wrapped.
As I gently peeled back the paper, the treasure held within was revealed. I reached inside and pulled from the wrapping a deep blue velvet box, you know, the type that jeweler’s use for something very fine and precious. I held it with reverence, feeling the texture on the palm of my hand, hesitating for a moment, anticipation rising in my chest. What could this be? As I pulled back the lid, I closed my eyes, not wanting the moment to end, and then opening them, I gazed with disappointment at the contents held within. The box was empty except for a single piece of paper. Tears welled up in my eyes. I placed the box on the table in front of me and lifted the paper from its velvet nest, examining it more carefully. It was not ordinary paper but an ivory colour and textured. Across the top of the paper, embossed in beautiful gold lettering were the words Gift Certificate. This was followed by a message penned in my mother’s familiar hand.
GIFT CERTIFICATE My Darling Daughter;
I have wrapped this gift for you with great care for it is the legacy I leave behind and wish to offer you.
I give to you the Gift of Courage – an invitation to lead your life without fear; an invitation to pursue your dreams and live the life you choose free of the opinions and demands of others. It is an invitation to believe in yourself, never doubting that what you can conceive and believe, you can achieve. Lastly it is an invitation to grab the brass ring of life and never let it go. Secondly I give you the Gift of Love – of love you will always have from me even though our journey together in this lifetime has come to an end; of love for yourself – perhaps the most important gift of all; of love for others which I encourage you to give often and freely; and of love for life and all that you touch during your time here on earth.
Daughter, I also give you the Gift of Grace – the joy of living full out, free of the burden of guilt, or blame or shame; an invitation to live your life forgiving yourself of all the sins you believe you have committed against others while also releasing the sins you believe others have committed against you. See and celebrate the abundance in your life and express gratitude for all of life’s magnificence. And finally my darling daughter, I give you the Gift of YOU – of recognizing your own beauty, your great gifts, and, perhaps most importantly, your flame, the spirit that burns deep within you. Show this light to the world – this is the Gift of Authenticity. Betty, will you do one thing for me? (And this is my last request of you). Live this gift as I ask and as you travel through life, give this gift freely to others; for you see my daughter, it is in the living and the giving that the true meaning of life resides. Love Mom
I placed the paper, now my most treasured possession, back in the velvet box, gently closed the lid, and hands resting on the top of the case, remembered my mother and the numerous other gifts she had given to me over a lifetime – patience, encouragement, a listening ear, the warmth of her arms around me, conversations over dinner, her laughter and sly sense of humor, and so much more. These I knew were the important gifts, more important than all the material things, the toys and clothes she had also provided. And I also knew that these were the gifts that I wanted to be remembered for, to be my legacy. What do you want yours to be?
Until next time, Betty Betty Healey is an award-winning author, coach and inspiring speaker. Betty and Jim Healey will be starting a weekly coaching circle, late January, in Cornwall. NEWS FROM by Rose Desnoyers
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS FOCUS ART ON LINE
What is FOCUS ART about? In 2004, FOCUS ART was founded by five artists eager to form a circle of support and expertise in Cornwall and SD&G for the visual artists. There was a need that had previously been met by different art councils, college programs and devoted art leaders in the community but at this time artists felt isolated and without a voice. The group elected its first board of directors and voted in the design of its logo. Sue’s Art Gallery on Sydney was its first home. The next step was to design a website www.focusartonlin.org. It wasn’t long that the group grew to over 100 members. Today, eight years later, FOCUS ART has about 80 members; some members are professional artists, others are beginners or artists who need just that nudge to go public with their work while several members are patrons of the arts.
In 2010 L'Association Focus Art Association , a bilingual group, became an official Corporation with a constitution and terms of reference.
What does FOCUS ART do? FOCUS ART promotes the visual arts, especially painting, photography, pottery, and sculpture. Whenever possible the group is an organized voice of visual artists in defining needs and possibilities. FOCUS ART is instrumental in discovering works of the many talented artists in our area by means of activities such as exhibitions: Juried Art Show, Theme exhibitions at the Public Library, Centre Culturel de Cornwall, Mayor’s Gala, GlenStorDun Lodge, Château Gardens.... FOCUS ART is open to partner with organizations in the actualizing opportunities to promote the visual arts; it already has done so with le Centre Culturel de Cornwall in Le Corrid’ART, Kinsmen Art Festival, Cornwall Square Art Workshops, Salon des Arts du St-Laurent... The "Kings of Vegas: A Tribute to the Rat Pack" Article and photos by Jacqueline Milner, RTA of Image-ine Photography http://www.image-inephotography.com The Port is seeing many new and long time visitors to The Port Theatre these days since they have begun featuring live entertainment to the delight of Cornwall and area visitors. Regional Veteran performers The Moe Lemieux Band, opened the evening with some cooool jazz accompanied by the "larger than life" vocals of Candy Provost. I have seen Candy perform on a number of formal occasions and was pleasantly delighted as Candy "scatted" out a toe tapping melody with The Band. It was awesome! One of the wonderful aspects of this local venue is its accessibility to our talented, regional Artist pool. A range of talent has been featured at The Port over the last few months, catering to a range of discerning tastes from 1 to 101. Last weeks performance featured the "Kings of Vegas: A Tribute to the Rat Pack", featuring Christopher Jay (as Sammy Davis Jr.), David Iannandrea (as Dean Martin), and Michael Mirand (as Frank Sinatra). The three gave a real sense of the sounds and camaraderie that existed between The Rat Pack. The three stepped off stage and to the delight of the visitors danced, sang to, and danced with the audience.

SEEKING SPORTS Cover Story
Deprived of Hockey No More Articles and Photos by Grant Reso In the brightly lit depths of the Cornwall Civic Complex, I asked the head of catering, “May I have one of these bread rolls?” I hadn’t had a chance to eat before arriving, and making a trip to the concession stand didn’t appeal to me all that much. “Help yourself,” he replied, as he looked at my press pass. I was there to cover the Cornwall River
Kings’s hockey game. This wasn’t your average game coverage with goals, points, major penalties—why those things were mere fluff for this story. No sir, I was here to see what the rave was all about.
orchestrating the reaction. It’s the solid hockey action that has been missed by this city since The Cornwall Aces folded in 1995. It’s not that the Cornwall Colts are a bad team—they’re in a different league. As their name suggests, the Colts are young, they’re just kids still learning to be professional and learning how to take Ian MacInnis’ coaching efforts at value. Most of the River Kings players are in their mid to late-twenties with a different skills and experiences. (another sentence here? Some of these boys have played for the minors, the majors, or just grew up hacking the puck across the asphalt in Pitt Street parking lots. Back to the story: Here we are late in the third period. The crowd I’m sitting with is cheering loudly! They were like a pack of caged yet well-trained animals let loose for the evening. Banging on the glass with beverages in hand, they are enjoying every moment of this game as much as I am. When this period started, it was tied at five. The game ended with The River Kings winning Eight to Five. The first two periods were tight with back and forth scoring, first the Kings, their opponents, then the Kings would answer. This tense style is what the fans came for. They also came for how the Kings know how to finish… At fifteen dollars a ticket, you really can’t go wrong taking in a game. The Cornwall River Kings truly deliver what we all enjoy most about hockey: Passion and Excitement.
From the arena speakers, I hear: “Twenty-two hundred in attendance,.” The voice behind the microphone was retired sergeant Thom Racine. Good man. I thought of just asking him to write this story, but that wouldn’t be professional. However, his insight on the sport is second to none. It’s no wonder he’s in demand all over the area to either call the game for television, radio, or some other media. Oh right, the game. That’s why I’m here. I had never been to a River Kings game. I’ve mostly attended Cornwall Colts games. Not because I’m a fan—although I support just about everything local in our fair city—no, I’m usually there as a member of the crew for televised productions. I had heard a lot about the River Kings. There’s constant buzz about the action and near sold out games. Why so much buzz, I wondered. By the time I took my position, fans were pouring into the arena. Some die-hard fans had already been there thirty minutes prior to the warm up. When I say fans were pouring in, there’s no exaggeration. How could this team garner this much craze and this many fans? It’s well into the third period and the action has been nonstop. During intermission Rodney Rivette expressed his opinion as to why people enjoy watching the River Kings. “It’s the action,” he said. He was right. No, indeed it’s not the NHL lockout that’s

PIPERS POINT with Rodney Wilson
SEEKING SPORTS Way to stay classy Lacasse One of my favourite moments of this young hockey season happened last Saturday night at the Civic Complex.
DRIVE THE NET: The River Kings’ line of captain Steve Simoes, Kurt McSweyn and Steve McJannett continues to drive hard to the net. And despite a goaltender interference call on the captain early in the third period, they continued to do what they do best all night long. McSweyn did just that and was rewarded with a garbage goal, so to speak, which turned out to be the game winner.
Backup goaltender Fred Piche had just backstopped the Cornwall River Kings to a thrilling 8-6 come-from-behind win over Riviere-du-Loup. All Star goaltender Loic Lacasse, who was pulled early in the second period, handed his backup the game puck at the exact time the 21-year-old was being named the game’s third star by public address announcer Thom Racine.
HOWE: In his first few games as a River King, enforcer Tyler Howe showed he could land a solid punch. Last Saturday, he proved he could take one, too. Howe had a lengthy second-period battle with Alexandre Vachon, a veteran enforcer in the LNAH who is a handful at 6’4” 230 lbs. Vachon landed some good shots early on but Howe stayed on his feet and hung in tough. That seemed to help spark the River Kings, who trailed 4-2 at the time.
It was a great moment and well deserved for Piche, who stopped 28-of-30 shots en route to his first LNAH victory. The night didn’t go quite as planned for Lacasse, who was playing against his older brother Chad. To make matters worse, it was his brother who scored the fourth goal, which was the last shot he’d face on this night. Yet, there Lacasse was on the ice after the final buzzer sounded, all smiles and sincerely happy to see the kid get the win. Sure says a lot about what kind of team the River Kings are. ON TAP: The River Kings (9-4-0-1) pay Sorel-Tracy (7-6-3-0) a visit Friday night. The team has a coach bus making the trip. Then, Jonquiere (11-4-0-0) pays a visit to the Civic Complex in a matchup of the top two teams in the LNAH standings. In their last matchup, Cornwall beat Jonquiere 5-4 on Nov. 24 at the Complex.
CORBEIL: Cornwall’s Nicolas Corbeil was unavailable for last Saturday’s game vs. Riviere-du-Loup, and it cost him the team scoring lead. Corbeil had a two-point lead over Sasha Pokulok, who went out and had a four-point night.
Border Patrol with Craig Revelle
COLLYMORE: With Corbeil out, the River Kings were also playing without the services of Alex Bourret, who has moved on (for now) to the KHL. Shawn Collymore, all of a sudden, had lost both his linemates, but he turned in his best performance of the season, scoring two almost identical goals that were highlight-reel material. He beat Riviere-du-Loup goaltender Pierre-Olivier Lemieux high glove side with laser wrist shots to the top shelf. Collymore also added three assists for a five-point night.
A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands Although the 2012 racing season is now just a memory, there is still plenty of off-season news and information trickling in from area race tracks. We will discuss that throughout this column, as well as the sudden surge in the Sportsman division that will have car counts on the rise when the green flag waves to start the 2013 racing season.
ATTENDANCE: Cornwall has surpassed the 20,000 mark in attendance through only seven home dates. The River Kings are averaging 2,955 fans per game. And, they’ve rewarded local hockey enthusiasts with an impressive 5-1-0-1 record at the Ed Lumley Arena. Last Saturday, the Kings drew 2,556 spectators; a very solid number considering it’s Christmas-party season. Cornwall’s next home game (after this weekend) is Sunday, Dec. 23 when Saint-Georges comes to town for a matinee. WORLD JRS: It’s the most wonderful time of the year… the World Junior Hockey Championships. It’s always been a great holiday tradition for me, gathering around the tube with family and watching the Under-20 tourney. It’ll be that much more special for Canadian fans this year, since we’ve been without the NHL all season. It’s too bad the tournament is being held in Russia; most of Canada’s games will be at 4:30 a.m. I might just need that wakeup call from TSN’s Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole. You could always catch the game on repeat later in the day, but with social media, it’ll be hard not to hear the score somehow. SPENGLER CUP: I’ve never found enough time to fit the Spengler Cup into my schedule during the holidays, but this year, there will be some star power on Team Canada and it might be worth watching. With NHL games cancelled through the end of December, it’s very likely that John Tavares, Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza and Patrice Bergeron could all be wearing the Maple Leaf at the tournament. Canada hasn’t won the event since 2007. The final is set for Dec. 31. Email Rodney at rodwilson@gmail.com or follow him on Twitter @piperspoints Throughout the years I have been a big proponent of the Sportsman division. The GM Crate Engine program may have some issues abroad, but since they have made that motor mandatory, the car counts have been on the rise. In 2013, the class will continue to have strong support with several new drivers coming into the division. Joey Ladouceur will move up from the Pro Stock division to Sportsman, and Bill “Moon” Mulling will come out of racing retirement to compete with the newly formed Merpaw-Mullin Motorsports team. There are a couple graduates from the Brockville Karting that will move to Sportsman as well, plus several other racers from the area who will all be competing in this popular class.
This will be my last column for the 2012 season. I hope you have all enjoyed Let’s start off with Cornwall Motor Speedway, who just announced this past reading it, and I look forward to writing again in the New Year. Brockville Speedway has announced their date for the annual 1000 Islands RV DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals for 2013. It will take place on October 18th – 20th.
