FANTASIA and the City: A better success story could not be scripted
Growing up in Quebec during the 1960s, there were plenty of opportunities to develop a love for genre films (horror and science-fiction prime among them). TV, especially French TV, offered quite a bit of that and back in the day when you had four basic channels, 12 and 6 on the English side and 2 and 10 on the French (we didn’t have cable at home till much later, being a working class family), we were fortunate to be able to catch some great horror flicks late night on CBC. And if you were prepared to sneak into the living room at 1:00 a.m., turning on your family’s Dumont TV set and find a channel that didn’t have the longdefunct Indian head test pattern, you would often stumble upon risqué fare like Vampire Circus, the stunning Hammer Film classic. Yup, for an adolescent boy, the nudity approved by liberal Quebec censors was enough motivation to sleep a bit less at night.
As an adult who can watch what I want when I want, I think times are indeed pretty exciting for movie buffs. Videos, followed by DVDs and the Internet, provide a lifetime’s worth of cinematic gems, but sometimes what’s available commercially just isn’t enough. Like any addict, you may crave something stronger for the next fix. That’s where Fantasia comes in. My all-time favourite annual festival is in its 15th year now (go to www.fantasiafestival.com to learn of the scheduling riches proffered for this year’s fest, which started July 14 and goes till August 7). And we were indeed fortunate to grab some time with the festival’s insanely busy Director of International Programming, Cote Saint-Luc-raised Mitch Davis, still and always a West End resident, to learn Ins ide - More on the F antas ia film fes tival - good s tretc hes for long movie s c reenings - Sol s ounds a bit more about the mother of all off on the U2 c onc ert genre film festivals.

Fantasia THE choice pick for genre film fans...
Briefly Bram * Briefly Bram *
Since the mid-1990s, summer for me has meant one very exciting thing: the Fantasia film festival. Starting in the mid-1990s on the heels of a brilliant but very badly abused Festival de Cinema Fantastique, run just prior to Halloween by a local entrepreneur named Sylvain Krief, it opened many doors. Despite the latter’s rapid demise, the organizers of Fantasia already knew that fan support for genre films was here in abundance. I covered the Festival de Cinema Fantastique for The Gazette during its two year run, the start of a beautiful freelance relationship (and a chance to meet film personalities like a young, rather unknown Peter Jackson, whose insane puppet movie Meet the Feebles screened here over a decade before he would attain fame with Lord of the Rings and King Kong) and when I heard that a new festival was starting up a few years later, I was champing at the bit. Fantasia started as just an Asian film festival, with screenings at the vaunted Imperial Theatre, but quickly branched out into all things genre-related from around the world, including Canada and the U.S: sci-fi, fantasy and, of course, horror, with animation and short films added to the mix. Its roots remained, however, giving fans a chance to view the craft of Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Filipino filmmakers whose work was little known outside Asia.
palpable, the applause deafening. Note, however, that conservative types are likely to be a bit taken aback, as the mean demographic here is younger and generally quite alternative. You’ll see more body art, piercings and unusual or colourful attire than you may be used to in your traditional neighborhood movie theatre – and, yeah, the screamo music leading up to the rolling credits can be somewhat off-putting and obnoxious. That is really MY sole criticism as a rabid film buff, so taken as context, that’s a terrific compliment. But because many of the films are international and invariably subtitled (though many are English-language films and are not), I suppose you could bring ear plugs, sit back (read Chantalle’s Yoga U. column this issue to learn how to do so for many hours without feeling any pain) and enjoy some spectacular, often disturbing filmmaking. Go to www.fantasiafestival.com to see this year’s schedule, though you really should buy a program book for just $5. It’s well worth the money, comes with a DVD and is filled with material and terrific art that will keep you busy for hours. Just don’t read it so thoroughly that you miss too many great flicks! Fantasia 2011 runs from July 14 – August 7… still plenty of time to catch it… U2 concert another example of municipality’s lack of conscience
I admit I am a U2 fan and I was really bummed that I didn’t get a ticket for The biggest problem with Fantasia, outside of the pains common to the recently-held concert at the old Hippodrome. But as far as I am the growth of any child, is that respect has been hard-won. Funding concerned, whether you enjoyed it or were victimized by this scandalous from the various levels of government was virtually non-existent, event as I was, it’s one more example of how the municipal business while other local festivals had the benefit of an annual cash cow… in enterprise of WME (worst mayor ever) Gerald Tremblay simply doesn’t many cases wildly undeserved. But festival founder and president give a damn about any of us, no matter how much we fork out in tax Pierre Corbeil (one of the nicest, most humble and media-shy men as revenue. I work in the area near the concert site and from Wednesday till you will find in this business – incalculably distant in mannerism from Friday, the day of the first concert, the entire area was a zoo of traffic the flamboyant, gregarious and quite egotistical Serge Losique of the congestion as the city sealed off the concert site, as if President Obama World Film Festival) persevered and Fantasia has finally been granted or the Queen of England was visiting. I was SO fed up with this nonsense funding in its 15th season. It’s not a lot yet, but take it from me, it’s that I took Friday off work and headed to Vermont for a long weekend, well-deserved. If you love movies, Fantasia is offjust to get away from the mess. And the-charts-spectacular. from what I heard (and this issue’s Last Call with Sol aptly backs this up), If you have never been to a Fantasia screening, the concert really did take over the you are missing something very special. First-off, town. Fan or not, just about everyone the 150 or so feature films screened (more this for many miles around was affected, year, because the fest has been extended one way or another. Renovations of any kind?
What was great entertainment for many two weeks ago (when the rock group U2 seized control of the area formerly held by horses and gamblers) was a nightmare for many others. For the record, the sell-out crowd of more than 80, 000 that filled the specially- created outdoor showplace Friday and then again Saturday night was treated to almost four hours of music each night. I had the opportunity, want it or not, to hear the show on Friday, from my friend George’s balcony in Ville St. Laurent and Saturday on Marc Chagall Avenue in Cote St. Luc… where several hundred people parked their cars and lawn chairs to listen to the music. But more importantly, what about the thousands of sick people in nearby hospitals and senior’s residences who had to endure the continuous loud music? What about the paralysis of traffic in and around the area of Decarie and Jean Talon? What about the loss of revenue to businesses in Decarie Square and notably to Union Electric, Snowdon Deli, Dollar Cinema and others. I have it on good authority that Walmart, and the owner of Decarie Square, were compensated for their losses - but what about the rest of the businesses? Some restaurants gouged the public to benefit from the captive audience and everyone who owned a piece of land in the area rented space at $40 a day. Hopefully, some of the merchants who suffered a loss of revenue will join forces and sue either Evenko, the organizer of the event, or the City of Montreal (Gerald Tremblay) and whomever was responsible for granting the required permit. By the way, the Mayor said policing the event cost one million dollars: this is the same guy who said Bixi bikes cost $1,000 dollars each, which turned out to be $3,000. It keeps getting better for Montreal’s taxpayers, doesn’t it? Speaking of Mayor Tremblay, that legendary lover of Bixis, beaches and tramways, he has announced plans to host the 2014 World Masters Aquatics Championship. Although he is quoted as saying, “We’ve learned a lot from the past,” he apparently has learned nothing since once again his business plan is to “hope there will be no taxpayer investment.” He goes on to say “we’ve just got to make sure” that the federal and provincial governments say yes to funding. Well, if he fails to cover the costs and/or doesn’t get funding from the governments, he can always do what he did in 2005, which was to renege on his promise that the taxpayers would not have to cover any losses. It cost the taxpayers $4.7 million. Where does the Mayor think federal and provincial dollars for funding come from? Does he expect money to fall from the sky? All government revenue comes from tax payers. The Mayor’s plan is not a plan at all. A first year business course student could teach Mayor Tremblay that he ought to be more involved in repairing the infrastructure and less in dealing with finances. This journalist is investigating the possibility of impeaching the mayor and if that is possible in our political system I will be the first signature on a petition. Nothing personal, just common sense. It is definitely closing time. For more, please visit www.lastcallwithsol.com

Davis wasn’t the typical Wagar grad who excelled at a time when the school was still a PSBGM bastion of reach for the Top-winning genius. “I went to – and was expelled from – Wagar,” Davis admitted. “The absolutely skull-smashing boredom that is Cote Saint-Luc probably pushed me to devoting even more time towards exploring my bizarro fascinations than I may have done had I lived somewhere a bit more… exciting.”

NOTE: A better editor and friend cannot be found anywhere)… Davis ranted on enthusiastically about another dozen or so key talents involved with programming, but space precluded their appearance. Come to the festival and you will meet many of them eventually.
What can one expect at a Fantasia festival? “We’re incredibly open-minded with what we program,” Davis hinted. “And our audience is every bit as open-minded as we are. We program films we love, so it’s a very unusual mix of action, horror, comedy, documentary, drama, experimental, animation… even the odd children’s film. Of all the festivals, we probably have the most eclectic combination of titles in any lineup, a reflection of our gonzo personalities as film lovers and programmers.” Davis is most impressed by the morphing demographic. “I’ve been here since the second year and while I have seen our audience get older, I am gratified to witness the arrival of a new, younger crowd that reacts the same way they once did. We’ve got one of THE best informed audiences around and they support our unconventional lineup with love and thunder. It’s rare to hear a cell phone go off…. Whole Grain Roll by Caryn Roll
Disclaimer: You are totally NOT allowed to sneak food into the cinema… …But if you do, bring the good stuff and remember snacks packed in little containers are always fun and less messy than those shoved into plastic wrap and baggies. Throw everything into a large bag or knapsack with a shmata (any old rag) covering it and some reading material as a decoy. Here are some movie nosh ideas: Make your own trail mix with 1/4 cup of dried fruit, 1/4 cup of unsalted mixed nuts, 1/4 cup of high fibre cereal like All Bran and a tablespoon of coconut flakes or dark chocolate slivers. This is a high calorie snack but it is filling and packed with fibre. If it’s a matinee you are heading out to see, why not pack a sandwich? Get creative and use fancy whole grain bread with a spread like hummus instead of mayonnaise. For the protein, use leftover meat, chicken or a hard cheese like cheddar. I caution you against a healthy tuna or egg salad sandwich since that would surely give you away. I can smell tuna from at least half a kilometre away. For the side, baby carrots work well so keep your crunching quiet. If you prefer traditional movie fare like popcorn, make your own (NOTE: The popcorn at Fantasia is excellent and inexpensive, compared to the atrocious prices most cinemas charge). Ditch the convenient microwave bags for an air popper, which you can pick up for about $20, or try popping the corn in a paper bag in the microwave. Season it with homemade garlic butter. Use two teaspoons for three cups of popped popcorn. That is just two servings of fat plus one serving of grains! Drink water, as it is the preferred beverage. Don’t go with juice or pop. Who needs the extra calories? If you are a mindless eater maybe munching during a movie is not a good move. Chew sugarless gum instead. Finally, this may seem pretty obvious but you can’t beat a fruit or some cut up vegetables for a healthy snack. Add some dairy, like a yogurt or a piece of cheese, and you’ve got the perfect snack. Who’s going to kick you out of your seat for eating something healthy? ED. NOTE I am consistently battling Montreal movie theatres regarding their policy not to permit patrons to bring in their own food…. within reason. It’s not so much the money, although the rip off prices of just about every concession product really irks me, but rather the garbage available. If healthy food was available, like wraps, tofu hot-dogs on whole wheat buns and such, I would not mind spending the money. But invariably you are forced to buy food jammed with nitrites and trans-fats. Perhaps we can revisit this in the future?

A runaway hit at FantasticFest, Tribeca, Karlovy Vary and Sundance, this wildly entertaining mockumentary sees a pack of student filmmakers uncovering an actual government-employed troll hunter (trolls are apparently a big problem in the region that the powers that be are trying to keep quiet)! Letters From L a L a L and - Wedding Steven Goldmann Bells Wedding Bells
Festival was a unique coming home experience. Not just because the film slayed - but because of the memories. No one quite knew how special the event was for me. Along with hundreds of friends, I naturally invited Carol Singman to come - but she could not attend for reasons I have since forgotten, but she was still there with me in my heart... along with my late mom and dad. Steven Goldmann is a Hollywood director born and raised in Montreal’s West End. His very personal insights into La La Land are found exclusively in The Local Seeker.
Fantasia and Ms. Singman: Always a special place in my heart For me, the FANTASIA Film Festival occupies a very special place in my heart. It will forever represent the convergence of an emotionally charged event with very personal, heartfelt memories. In my last column I wrote a bit about my father planting the seeds of love for cinema in me at a very early age. He was not alone in this endeavour. He had a little help in the form of my fourth grade teacher, Ms. Carol Singman of Edinburgh Elementary School in Montreal West. She was but 24-years old and it was her first year as a teacher. My mother had passed away half way through my third year of school and upon entering fourth grade I can only assume that Ms. Singman was informed she had a sad young boy to help coax out of his shell. She took a special interest in me and she did a lot of coaxing. She learned that I had a vivid fantasy life, that I loved to write, sing, draw and act. Most importantly she learned how much I loved the movies. I learned a lot about Ms. Singman much later in life. After I had had some real success in my chosen occupation as a Director, I searched her out and found her. I needed to tell her how profoundly she touched my life and how I don’t believe I would be doing what I am doing without her having been part of my life. It was one of those weepy moments you’d expect in a chick flick. But it was special to me, nonetheless. Later, Ms. Singman would meet my family and was there for me when I put my father to rest. Back in fourth grade I would learn Ms. Singman was taking evening classes at Sir George Williams University, in FILM APPrECIATION. When she learned that her evening class was going to be screening FrITZ LANG’S METROPOLIS, she sent me home with a note asking my father if she could take me to the screening. My dad said yes. To this very day, I remember being this little kid going to this cool university theatre downtown and seeing this incredible black and white film. The whole experience is etched forever in my memory… Even going to the bathroom and getting lost! Flash forward to just three short years ago. I had the Canadian premier of my second feature film, TRAILER PARK OF TERROR, in that very theatre. A sold out show at the FANTASIA Film

The festival screening season made comfortable
Yoga U - Chantalle Kudsi
As a film major, I spent many hours and a few years viewing films and taking notes in dark theatres:Thrilling, but not necessarily physically comfortable. How can we enjoy the film festival season without compromising the state of our backs, necks and shoulders?
6710 St Jacques, Montreal, Qc, H4B 1V8
If possible, walk or bike to the cinema, to loosen up your whole body, including hips. Once in the theatre, choose a centre seat that is neither too far away from the screen nor too close, to avoid straining your neck, chin or eyes unnecessarily. Most importantly, take a few minutes to stretch before taking your seat, in-between screenings and after. Here is a sample of what you can try. Film Fest Stretch (A standing stretch that can be modified into a seated stretch by focusing on the upper body movements of arms, shoulders and neck) 1. Ensure there is sufficient clear space around you and the ground is level. Stand with feet parallel and pointing forward, hip-width apart. 2. Inhale, sweep arms up overhead. Exhale, fold forward at the hips, sweeping arms down and dropping your chest toward your thighs. Let the crown of your head drop toward the floor, neck loose, head hanging. 3. After a few breaths, take your weight into your heels and slightly bend both knees. Inhale, begin to roll up slowly like a rag doll. Take as many breaths as needed to roll up completely into a standing position. Chin and head come up last. 4. Make a few shoulder rolls, inhaling shoulders forward and up and exhaling them back and down. 5. With head centre, inhale once, then exhale and turn your head to look right; inhale head back to centre. Exhale and turn your head to look left; inhale head back to centre. repeat an even number of times right and left. 6. With head centre, inhale once, then exhale and drop your right ear toward your right shoulder; inhale head back up. Exhale and drop your left ear toward your left shoulder; inhale head back up. repeat an even number of times right and left. 7. Find your seat in the theatre and settle in with popcorn. Ask yourself: Can I keep some of my awareness inward while still participating in the viewing experience? Can I watch the landscape unfold on screen and still pay attention to my breath unfolding?
