FOCUS ART ON LINE NEWS

A R T & E N T E R TA I N M E N T

IT’S HERE! WOW! After much anticipation, the Focus Art 10th Anniversary art calendar was launched at the Members’ Meeting November 5th at le Centre Charles-Émile Claude. The publication is a result of a People’s choice exhibition back in February 2014 at the Cornwall Square and showcases the works of 12 local artists, 3 pages of snapshots of past activities in the association, space for notes and recognition of our great sponsors. For the very first time Focus Art reached out to the community to fund its calendar, which in turn finances activities, art exhibitions, speakers and future initiatives in the arts. The association is very grateful to its Principal sponsors Dr. Michel Dubuc of Dubuc Eye Care and the Department of Economic Development Choose Cornwall who believe the arts and culture are necessary in a balanced community.

We also thank our Major monthly sponsors Carolyn H. Davis, Elaine’ Batiks, Louise Mignault, YAC, Truffles Burger Bar and Table 21, Caisse populaire Desjardins, Brock Frost Realtor, Studio Phase II, No Frills, DJ Shellshock & Invitations and more by MAI-LIIS, Harvest Garden Centres and the Local Seeker. Finally, individual supporters equally add to the success of our project and we are grateful for their contribution. Guy Lauzon MP, Kath-

When such an enterprise is a success it is thanks to a strong and organized team. A community thrives when talent and persistence come together. Our thanks to Louise Mignault (leader) Mai-Liis Renaud (designer) and Elaine Arkwright (finances); we appreciate Adèle Constantineau and Suzanne Villeneuve who pitched in their talent and time to find sponsors. I am proud to be part of this team. Members of Focus Art are fortunate that art is so important to some artists that they are willing to leave their studio and make art part of their community. Is this another kind of art? At this time you can purchase calendars from members of Focus Art or by calling Rose 613-931-1194, Elaine 613-938-8315 or Louise 613-932-9939. Locations where the calendar will be available will be in next week’s paper.

THERE HAS BEEN A MURDER!

So was the declaration of the President of Focus Art at the monthly meeting November 5th. Members were stunned. They looked at each other, puzzled.

A hush fell over the group as they waited for the more information to come. And it did...To find out what happened, who was murdered, members

were to come to the next meeting on December 3rd. All gave a sigh of relief.

The trick was played and they would remember to return next month for the Christmas potluck supper when for a change this year their talents of discovery “Who done it” would be challenged. Invitations are in the mail.

by Patrick Guindon It’s time we stop teaching our children, be quiet, and listen to them instead. So often we want to help them: “Colour inside of the lines!” “No, a head isn’t a square!” “Santa doesn’t wear purple, he wears red!” “You forgot the (fill in the blanks)!” But are we really helping? It is wonderful to be attentive to what your children are doing. Of course, we want them to develop appropriately, to be on par with their peers and to maybe even excel. But, children are naturally curious and creative when allowed to be, and creativity leads to creativity. “My child isn’t creative/doesn’t like art,” is often a blanket statement for, “My child doesn’t enjoy doing crafts that I want him to do.”

It is important to balance the “musts” with exploration. Play-based learning boasts this, and it’s time we, as parents, embrace it, too. In fact, it is so important that this week I invite you to let your kids teach you something. The next time that your child starts working on some art, be an observer (easier said than done). Watch how he holds his pencil. Notice the focus on her face. See how she chooses her colours or how he goes about drawing a picture of himself. Look at the shapes they use and then sit down and mimic it. What? Yes! Mimic their innocent style. You will be empathizing with them, showing them that they have something to teach even an adult, and boosting their con-

fidence intrinsically, instead of “boosting” it by having them fulfill your own biased expectations of how to draw a person, or a house, or a flower. When I give art lessons, both privately, or in my classroom, I watch closely to how they make their trees, portraits, and animals. I learn more there than I ever have from a book. Pablo Picasso has so often been quoted, saying, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Perhaps with this simple exercise every now and then, a few more children can remain artists. Maybe you will discover your own unique voice, too. Ryder Kelly drew this concert. I mimicked his approach to drawing trees and composition, changing very little but adding in some shading. When he saw what I was doing, he beamed for hours after!

Merry Christmas! No matter how we try to say it differently or try to be “politically correct”, it’s Christmas. There, I said it. This is not saying that I do not respect others’ beliefs or traditions either. Far from it. Regardless of what mall or large store you go in to today, you will see signs of Christmas coming. Yes, Christmas has become more “commercialized” but having been in retail for over 30 years I have seen a gradual shift to less about gift giving (we all have cut back) to more about who is really important to share Christmas with. Larger families have adopted picking names or just giving gifts to the little ones. Gift cards are relatively new to the gifting industry but are an excellent way of allowing the receiver to purchase something for themselves guilt free!

Cover Story Continued ...

Agapè fruit forest continues to grow The funding from Tree Canada finally took root, as volunteers and staff planted 40 more trees on Thursday, October 30.

The initiative is supported by a grant from the Edible Trees program, which provides grants of up to $4,000 to municipalities, schools, and community gardens to purchase, plant, and maintain fruit and nut trees. “The trees planted will become valuable sources of healthy food for these communities,” said Michael Rosen, Tree Canada President.

The Agapè Centre added more variety to their young fruit forest with two more kinds of apples and plums on the property of Fountaingate Christian Assembly, and they’re not stopping there. They’ll be planting over 100 more fruit trees in the spring, believing that good food has the power to build healthy communities. A team of six volunteers from Canada World Youth, a group of 17 young adults from across Vietnam and Canada who are spending two months volunteering in Cornwall, joined two Agapè Centre staff members to help with the planting process.

I have noticed people embracing new traditions at this time of year or reinventing old ones. Last Christmas in particular, we were asked do you have an elf? More specifically, Elf On The Shelf. For those of you who have never heard of Elf On The Shelf (like me), it is a little “magical” elf (created in a children’s book) that you place in different areas of your house each day and your elf flies to the North Pole each night to report to Santa all about the day’s adventures. Each morning the children race around the house to spot the elf. Another tradition that is quite entertaining for the whole family is find the Christmas Pickle in the tree. This is a Christmas ornament in the shape of a pickle and because it is green, it is usually hard to find. The first to find it usually receives a special gift or good fortune for the year.

Ha Luong, a 21 year-old Vietnamese youth in Canada with the exchange program, has been involved with similar projects in his home country, and sees the importance of an organization like a food bank or soup kitchen growing their own food. “With other volunteers, we had great time there digging and planting several kinds of trees,” he said. “But besides fun, it is not only about some more trees appearing in this area, but also about raising public awareness about the food supply, and later get involved in Agape's activities to help local residents.” The low-maintenance trees, grown specifically to thrive pesticide-free in the Canadian climate, will bear fruit within the next three to five years, and will provide fresh, local and organically grown food for those in our community who are living on low incomes and rely on the Agapè Centre.

“We greatly appreciate the support from Tree Canada and the young people who volunteered in the garden,” said Alyssa Blais, executive director for the Agapè Centre. “Without their help, we would not be able to have planted all these trees.” Last fall, the charity that feeds over 200 people a day planted 100 dwarf apple and pear trees, as well as 100 seedless grape vines, with the generous donation from Medical Arts Pharmacy.

Perhaps you have your own Christmas traditions when you put up the tree or set up the family Nativity Scene. Whatever your beliefs or traditions are, take some time to just enjoy each other’s company and reflect on what is important to you. Bee safe and Bee happy! DELICIOUS LEEK & POTATO SOUP nothing tastes better on a cold day like a bowl of delicious homemade soup. I made this soup recipe just two weeks after my knee replacement surgery and felt very proud of myself. I froze extras without any milk added for another day. WHy? Because, I am having a total shoulder replacement surgery on nov. 7th. Talk about getting over one surgery to face another one! I will be almost a bionic woman, with all new parts! I just can't wait! This recipe came from Blanche many years ago. But I made it in Canadian army style increasing the ingredient amounts 12 times. This way, you have extras to freeze. Thanks Blanche for caring and sharing! This soup is one of my very favourite ones to make and eat. leeks are at their best this time of year. Be sure to rinse in between each layer of the leek to rinse off any sandy particles which hide between each layer. you don't want any gritty bits in your soup.

INGREDIENTS: 12 cups of sliced leeks, cut off the stem end and cut only about 3 or 4" into the light green end (I used 3 very large leeks to get 12 cups) 1/2 cup butter 24 cups of peeled and diced potatoes 2 - 900 ml. cartons of low sodium chicken broth (or use 3 cartons of chicken broth- I did it this way as that is what I had on hand) 2- 10 oz. cans of chicken bouillon (Campbell's brand) + 2 - 10 oz. cans of water 2 cubes of chicken bouillon (we sell this at Sharyn's Pantry) 1 or 2 cans of Carnation evaporated milk (the 370 ml. size) ground white pepper to taste Kosher salt to taste chopped fresh flat leaf parsley and chives to taste (I used about 1/2 cup of each herb right out of my garden)

METHOD: -In a very large stock pot, melt the butter. -Prepare the vegetables, being careful to rinse the leeks to remove any bit of grit or sand which seem to hide in between each layer of the leeks. -The peeling and dicing will take the longest here. Just be patient, it is worth every bit of trouble. -Add the leeks to the melted butter, allow them to saute for 20 minutes while you peel and dice the potatoes. I sat down on my kitchen stool to do this! -Add the potatoes to the leeks. -Add the chicken broth, and bouillon and water and chicken bouillon cubes. -Cook the soup for 30 to 40 minutes, until the veggies are nice and tender. -Add the chopped parsley and chives and season with the Kosher salt and ground white pepper. -Now, you will ladle in small batches, the hot soup into a food processor. Once blended smooth, place the pureed soup into a clean soup pot. -Continue until all of the soup has been pureed smooth. At this point, you can cool the soup and place some of it in ziploc bags or plastic container to freeze for future use. When you want some, just stir in some milk or canned evaporated milk to thin it out to your taste. -To eat the soup now, add into it, 1 or 2 cans of Carnation evaporated milk to the creaminess you prefer. -This recipe will make a full 4 litre ice cream container of soup ready to eat as well as 4- 4 cup portions of the concentrate with no milk added to freeze for future use. I use freezer ziploc bags to do this. Flatten them out and they hardly take up any space in your freezer. Label and date and you are ready to go! ENJOY!!!

Hello to all of you who are sitting, standing, or even lying down reading the most positive and informative newspaper in Cornwall, Ontario. Hello to November and all that this eleventh month brings. Colder weather, earlier nights, and to chillier mornings. The leaves are just about all gone, but you can still go out and see many of the leftover coloured leaves that are still dangling off of the many branches. Lest I forget ~Rememberance Day~ November 11th... the day that we are to remember all of the "Poor Souls" that died for us, Canadians to have a FREE COUNTRY. My thanks and gratitude goes out to all of those who died for me, my children, my grandchildren, and for all of the Future Generations of upcoming Canadians. Please don't forget to buy a poppy to help support this memory and the many veterans that are still alive today. Please Stop and Thank a Veteran today.

Well, what a week I had...First of all my internet and phone went down last Wednesday morning. I only received these services back late Monday night. I was in a dilemma...No Phone! No Internet! What to do? What to do? Well, this is what I did do. I read a lot of interesting facts and fun things in magazines and some cool books that my children had given me. I watched some interesting documentaries and some fun movies that I hadn't seen in a long time. As well as I got to spend lots of "Quality Time" with my John doing a lot of fun things together. Chitting and chatting, laughing and joking around with each other. It wasn't so bad after all. Now, I have decided that I will NOT be spending so much time on face book any longer. I will be spending more "FACE TIME" with the ones that I love, cherish and enjoy being with.

won for her original hand- made (bubble wrap) Wood Fairy outfit. Isabelle really surprised me with her costume this year. She was a witch wearing a leopard print dress, along with a witch's long, crooked nose and nobbly chin. When I first was told that it was her sitting in the chair beside me I didn't recognize her at all. I literally LOL for several minutes taking in her witchyness. I enjoyed the company of sweet friends, listened to great tunes that I danced to all night long. There were many awesome costumes there that night. Sadly, I didn't win this year, but I was really happy for the people that did win for Best Costume. There's always next year... It's time for me to start planning for next year's costume ideas. TIP OF THE WEEK: Time to get OUT all of the "WINTER STUFF"!!! Mother Nature has been very kind to us thus far, this Fall, but the colder days are upon us... so Get Ready & Be Prepared. The many thrift stores here in Cornwall, like the Salvation Army, the Agape Center and Value Village are all stocked up to help you and all of your family members with affordable Winter clothing and footwear. By purchasing your Winter items here realize that you are helping these non-profit organizatons raise money to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves in our own community. Thank you for your continued support. JAMMING FOR HOSPICE~ IS COMING UP ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH AT 2:00 P.M. TO 10:00 P.M. AT THE ~AGORA CENTER~, 301 McConnell Ave. The Funds donated go to ~Carefor Hospice Cornwall~. There will be LIVE Entertainment, along with a Live and Silent Auction, a 50/50 Draw and a delicous meal that is all included in the $20.00 advance ticket price, (by November 8/14) or $25.00 at the door. Please Come Out and Enjoy Yourselves to Help and Support a Great Cause. I look forward to seeing you there.

BOOK YOUR CHRISTMAS PARTY TODAY!

John and I were invited to a Halloween Party, last Friday night at a friends of ours home, Lise & Greg Cooper. We had a little trouble finding their place, but with the help of the GPS we finally arrived to enjoy a wonderful evening with old and new friends. John was dressed up like an Egyptian Pharoah and I was his sexy, golden witchypoo, Witchalicious. Lise was a country girl, along with her husband, Greg, a bad toothed country bumpkin. There were a couple of inmates (wearing real handcuffs.) along with a really scary looking Dracula with air- filled wings, (Kim Dolan) There was a cute "Boobee Girl", dressed as a bee (Melissa Sauve) and her aunt (Josee Sauve) dressed up like "Fat Tony" and was HILARIOUS throughout the whole evening. Needless to say she was the BIG WINNER at the end of the evening for Best Costume. Funny thing is, is that she has lost over 30 pounds and then she decides to dress up and go out as "Fat Tony." KUDOS to you, Josee and to you, Lise & Greg for inviting John and I to your FUNTASTIC HALLOWEEN PARTY!!!

ASK JAZ, THE ORACLE

Jacynthe (Jaz) Villemaire

I am thrilled to be contributing to The Seeker! My intention is to create a space for us to share on life’s ups and downs, and where we can look at issues from a different perspective. Often, when we feel stuck, we need a fresh set of eyes to look at the situation; and that can be just what we need to hear or understand, so we can place one more piece of the puzzle together and keep on rolling. I propose to use my Oracle skills to be that set of eyes for you. But what is an Oracle? It’s someone who uses intuitive skills to show you what lies just out of your line of physical sight. It’s about asking the right questions and being open to receiving information through all our senses. That’s how I was able to help one of my clients with an issue she had with a daughter-in-law: my client wanted to know how to guide her daughter-in-law to the best outcome with one specific money issue. The cards revealed character strengths and flaws in both of them, from which we created a strategy for them to talk on the same level. This insight helped her detach from the emotionally-charged situation and move to a place of clarity and understanding. She left my office feeling more peaceful and wise.

For this column, I invite you to send me one of your life’s questions or issues by email at waytothewell@gmail.com I will meditate with your question and pull a card to provide you with insight as well as questions to consider. The card may highlight patterns that need to be shifted; influences that have brought you to where you are now; or insights that will guide you in your next step. I will provide insight on the next best action and on the possible outcome if this action is taken. I may also provide guidance on the spiritual helpers, energy and affirmations that can best serve.

OUT & ABOUT

with Carol Grant It was beautiful to see the downtown come alive again at night during the 2nd Annual Rock the Block Event held this past Wednesday. Many Cornwall downtown merchants opened until 9:00 p.m. to offer special discounts, sales and offers to city residents. It was a very enjoyable evening where customers could see the newest collections, current trends and demonstrations on display and also participate in draws, giveaways and much more. Although I did not get a chance to visit all of the participating stores, I would like to commend Chris Munro from Life's Little Pleasures who was once again mainly responsible for initiating this event. I hope you all had a chance to enjoy the night's festivities. We3Girls & Co. 5th Annual Trunk Sale & Pamper Me Party was held was held last Sunday at Marlins Orchards. The greenhouses were filled with more than 90 fabulous vendors offering you the best kick-start to your Christmas shopping season. Shown here are a few of the vendors, including one of the youngest in attendance, 12-year old artist Millie Burelle and author of newly published book "Never My Dream" Thom Racine with his book's inspiration, his father "Moe The Toe" Racine.
