Stepping out of your comfort zone Wednesday night, I attended our Focus Art meeting at Centre Charles-Emile-Claude. I have always been an artist at heart, but since I graduated from school, I never really had the opportunity to get in touch with the creative force in me until I joined the organization last year. Focus Art is about visual arts. All visual arts. Wednesday’s meeting was a hands-on workshop on how to carve a potato. A potato! I was curious. I was on uncharted grounds, but I didn't let it stop me. Not only had I never carved before, but the topic had to do with human anatomy, which I always had trouble with in art class. Nevertheless, I grabbed a sweet potato, started carving and you know what? It came out pretty well! I stepped out of my comfort zone and it paid off.
Taking chances, and sometimes making mistakes, allows us to grow. The same thing goes for politics. Rather than doing what you have always done just because you have always done it, I challenge you to explore new horizons this election. I'm not telling you to change your vote just for the sake of trying new things either, but I'm suggesting that you get out of your comfort zone and listen to what the “others” have to say. Go into it with an open mind. Take time to investigate what the alternative parties have to offer, hear what the smaller guys are all about. When I attended the debate last week, I was intrigued by some of the things the libertarian candidate came up with. It was interesting to hear new ideas, fresh perspectives, some never really explored before. Some things may sound unrealistic, but they have the potential to spark discussion, give new life to old dreams. So after hearing him, I informed myself on the party, read about what they stand for. Will I vote libertarian? Who knows! But at least, I know more about them and can make an informed decision.
Voting is a right best exercised by people who have taken time to learn about the issues. - Tony Snow Julia Lucio, Editor in chief

Shellshock Road trip to the TFC Game Being back in Cornwall means that I can reconnect with friends. A trip state side for dinner with my friend Sue, led to an opportunity to join her, her son Dylan and his friend Jason on a road trip to see the TFC game last Saturday. Although I am an avid sports fan, my knowledge of soccer is minimal, but I was game, so to speak.
We left early on Saturday, and after a brief stop for some shopping and lunch in Belleville, we made our way to Oshawa where we boarded the Go-Train direct to the Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. It was a warm sunny day, and although access to the field wasn’t until an hour before the game, the numerous booths and offers of swag made the wait time fly by.

The boys, although now young men, are soccer players and Sue has been the perennial Soccer Mom. Once we entered the stadium and made our way to the seats in the 5th row, we had a great view of the field and the action. I was given some back history on the team, and their guardian of the field.Perched high above the west side sits Toronto FC's guardian - Bitchy the hawk (as named by the fans). He made an appearance on the field and the crowd roared with excitement. They even have their die-hard fans named the Red Patch Boys, staunch supporters of their beloved team. They sing and cheer throughout the game in their designated area. They looked like they were having so much fun; I really wanted to join them. The first half was a bit slow, but in the second half, the team came alive and defeated their opponent the Columbus crew. As the 90 minute mark struck, they scored again and won by 3-2. It was an exciting game and an awesome day. We arrived home shortly after 1 am, and although I am not a soccer fan, I truly enjoyed my first professional soccer team game and the camaraderie of the day. Would I go again? Absolutely, especially if it is with these fans, thanks for the memories.

BEREAVED FAMILIES OF ONTARIO
Our WEEKLY LOOK at CHARITIES & ORGANIZATIONS in our COMMUNITY!
It's one of those services you don't look forward to using but when you lose a loved one, you're happy there's someone there to lean on. And that's what Bereaved Families of Ontario is there for, to provide empathy, education and a source of comfort and support during the loss of a loved one. Not everyone is fortunate to have a strong support system in time of grievance and Bereaved Families offers a wide range of counselling, support and outreach to those in need.
Operating in Cornwall since 1985, the local office features 1 full-time staff, 2 part-time staff and nearly 25 volunteers who help make sure the support is in place. I spoke with Traci Trottier (photo right) from the office and she explained the type of services the centre offers such as personal or group support sessions, one-on-one counselling, telephone support, a lending library and resources, programming specific to type of loss, workshops and services are available for people as young as 4 years old. The group relies on their Annual Gala for much of their fundraising dollars. This annual, formal event is being held at the Best Western on Saturday, September 20th and will feature a 4-course dinner, lots of prizes and entertainment by Glengarry's own Kelli Trottier. ``With three nominations for fiddle player of the year by the Canadian Country Music Association, Kelli continues to perform and promote her music across the Country and beyond with her angelic voice and crisp fiddling, enhanced by her own songs and fiery stepdance!`` All money raised will support the Children and Youth Bereavement Services which has helped over 700 children and youth to date. Cash and cheque donations are always welcome as the group is non-profit. You can find them online at http://bfocornwall.ca/ or through their Facebook page.

OPERATION KIDSAFE Operation Kidsafe, a FREE digital fingerprint and photo safety program is here in Cornwall for the next year!
Over 2,000 children are reported missing in North America everyday and Founder Mark Bott wants to make sure every parent gets their Child Safety Kit. Says Bott, "This service will always be FREE, private and confidential. " He went on to specify that the information is not kept in any database and that the identifying fields are kept blank on the printout. Parents can return home with this document and fill out the fields themselves, preferably in pencil for any changing stats such as height and weight. Parents are encouraged to update the document's info with an updated photo each year. Bott also mentioned that "Abuse is much easier with online access to lists, clubs and information. 80% of these crimes are committed by people children already know which makes the "Stranger Danger" statement a thing of the past." Mayor Bob Kilger was on-hand and praised the local sponsor, Cornwall Honda, for their "good corporate citizenship" in taking the initiative to help the C o r n w a l l community benefit from this service. Local children and their families will be able to visit the Brookdale Avenue location within the next year to receive their own "Bio document", a quality 8.5x11" printout which can be used to provide to law enforcement anywhere in the world to aid in an investigation in the unfortunate event of a missing child. The system was tested out by several
children from A Child's Secret Garden Day Care and proved to be a pleasant experience for all on-hand.

The Ontario Health Coalition was recently in Cornwall with their "It's Time to Care" campaign. A large wooden rocking chair stood in front of City Hall as the public gathered around to hear how this coalition hopes to set a Minimum Care Staffing Standard of 4 hours of hands-on care per day, improve access to care & reduce wait times in long-term care homes. This is a way to ensure that there is enough care given to meet the needs of residents in long-term care homes. Access to LTC facilities is poor and has been declining over the last half-decade with more than 20,000 people waitlisted. The group will be at Queen's Park in the coming weeks.
If you are involved with a local charity, non-profit organization or an agency that can be of help to someone in need, please contact me to be featured in an upcoming article. I will arrange to take photos and do an article on your organization.

But, the weather is perfect for it. It’s time for a Jackson Pollock paint throwing afternoon. But, rather than just throwing paint, add something special to it. Start with a colour background. You can use just about anything to throw paint on. The dollar store sells canvasses for very little, but I actually prefer to do this type of art on MDF board from Home Depot. You can get a fairly large piece for less than $10, and you can cut it to size, or use the entire thing. This is ideal for a shared-painting session. Roll or spraypaint on some colour (black is my favourite), and then use 3-4 bright colours to throw at the board. Use paint brushes, sticks, straws, whatever – as long as your tool doesn’t touch the actual artpiece. Try out different heights, swirls or straight-throws, dance over it, dump a cup of paint on it. Have fun!

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
If after this is finished, you want to make it even more special, try adding a silhouette. If your piece is brightly coloured over black, use a contrasting tone like white or yellow. Cut this out of paper, cardboard, fabric (you could use a cool fabric instead of painting it) … the options are (as I always say) endless. Your image could be a face, or some people standing, or a cityscape, or a truck, anything you want. When the paint is dry, glue these together. You now have an incredible piece of fine art!

Fire Victims need YOUR help
As many of you know, there have been a few fires in the city lately, with two of the main ones being on Carleton and Louisa Streets in the East end of Cornwall. There were many families affected as the fires consumed multiple homes leaving a handful of families affected. Luckily, only one man sustained fire injuries to his left and police and firefighters were quick to respond and brought all people and pets to safety.
A special thank you already goes out to many generous members of our great city, in Maxville and outlying areas as donations have been pouring in. However, donations are still greatly needed. If you would like to donate items, anything would be appreciated. Here is a small list of the people affected:
• Pregnant mother needing clothes (size Large) as well as clothes for her husband (medium-large) • Mother of 3 children needing Diapers immediately (size 4) as well as clothes for the children (an 18-month old girl and a 6 year old girl, sizes 2 and size 5-6 and one 4 year-old boy, size 5) Their mother needs clothing (size Large) and their father needs size medium with size 32 • Another couple needs size Ladies medium-large clothing and size X-Large men's clothing • Furniture, pots and pans and household items would also be greatly appreciated.
Please contact Vicki at 613-935-7153 for donations or contact Karen at 613861-9229 to arrange a drop-off or pick-up of large items. Thank you also to these two local women for being the leads on getting donations to the families.

Mocktails Cornwall celebrated its launch party this past weekend! For those of you not familiar with Mocktails, this is an outside patio restaurant located at the back of the Civic Complex. They feature wonderful nonalcoholic drinks, ice cream and a few menu items and have many family-friendly events planned for this Summer. Check out their Facebook page to learn more about them (Mocktails Cornwall) and plan to join in on the Summer fun. The volleyball court will be opening soon and entertainment will be offered all Summer long. Launch night featured "Strait Country" and a fabulous time was had by all as you can see by the photos. Great drinks, great food, great friends and a great outdoor patio atmosphere overlooking the beautiful Lamoureux Park and St. Lawrence River - what more can you ask for?!

Congrats to all of the participants for taking part! Tim Horton's held their annual Camp Day fundraiser this week to help send kids to camp. Shown here is staff at the Marleau Avenue location with their "Punch Game" for $2, customers could punch a hole and win an instant prize. This week I mourn the death of my dear Uncle, Rejean Boyer who lost his battle with cancer on June 4th. "Reg" was a sweet, positive, caring, talented and loving man that many Cornwall residents were fortunate to know. Father to six, husband to Diane, brother to 6 siblings and family or friend to countless others, he was well-known in the music scene having grown up in a musical family. He played in local bands such as "The Original's" among others and people remember him for his voice that sounded uncannily like one of his idols, Merle Haggard. Some knew him from his hard work at places like Canadian Tire and Ridgewood where he worked for more than two decades. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Love you and R.I.P. "mon oncle"...

Over 6,000 rides provided by Cornwall Transit on Clean Air Day Cornwall Transit’s eighth annual Clean Air Day promotion was a huge success, with thousands of residents taking advantage of the day-long offer of free rides on Wednesday, June 4th. The City-run transit service recorded 6,472 passenger boardings throughout the day, making it the most successful Clean Air Day event yet. The turnout surpassed the 2012 Clean Air Day record of 6,045 passenger boardings. By comparison, the average daily boarding count is 3,191. “We are thrilled with the response, said Transit Division Manager Len Tapp. “Passengers have been contacting our office to express their appreciation for the free rides and great service.
X
In addition to regular Cornwall Transit users, officials also saw a large number of Kashechewan evacuees (currently staying at the Nav Centre) and new riders on the buses on Wednesday. “The goal of the promotion is to get more people on our buses to experience the benefits of using public transit, and we think we achieved that, said Mr. Tapp. “We hope the high ridership on Clean Air Day will translate into more people using our transit service on a regular basis. As part of the promotion, a series of ‘mystery riders’ handed out prizes to random riders on the buses throughout the day.

I tried a new recipe for stuffed peppers this week with great results. I like the idea of cutting the peppers into quarters instead of the basic halves. I find using sweet red, orange or yellow are more flavourful instead of the basic green peppers more commonly asked for. my quick almond treats are completely finished in less than 15 minutes....and they are delicious! I hope you try both recipes, I know you will enjoy them! Have a great week!
EASY STUFFED PEPPERS This recipe serves 4 nicely with 2 peppers per serving. Double the recipe if you need more servings. I made jasmine rice and steamed broccoli to go along with the peppers. Adding a box of stuffing mix intrigued me. I had to try it! Gary and I enjoyed them.
INGREDIENTS:
1 box of Stove Top Stuffing mix (any flavour, I had 'turkey flavour' in my pantry) 1 tbsp. of butter, melted 1 lb. of lean ground beef (Of course, use Sharyn's Pantry local good Stormont ground beef! See the difference in flavour and quality! Support your local farmers!) 1 large onion, diced 1- 14 oz can of diced tomatoes, include the juice (I used 1/2 of a 28 oz can) 1 tbsp. of minced garlic in oil 1- 12 oz. can of niblet corn 1- 1/2 cups grated mozzarella cheese (or you could use a medium cheddar cheese ) 2 sweet red peppers
METHOD: -Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. -Cut the peppers lengthwise from the bottom to the stem end into 4 pieces. Remove the stem and cut away any of the core and seeds. -In a skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over MEDIUM-HIGH heat, until the beef is cooked and no pink remains. Use a wooden spoon to loosen the meat as it cooks. Drain off any fat. -Melt the butter and mix it with 1/4 cup of the stuffing mix in a small bowl. Set aside for now. -Add the tomatoes, corn niblets, minced garlic in oil and remaining stuffing mix into the ground beef in the skillet. Stir in the grated cheese. Mix gently but thoroughly. -Arrange the peppers in a casserole dish, cut side up. Fill each pepper as full as possible with the meat filling. Mound this up as high as you can fit it in to the pepper. There should be about 1 cup or so of the filling per pepper quarter. -Sprinkle the stuffing mix and melted butter over top of each stuffed pepper. Press down gently to have it adhere to the mixture. -Cover the casserole dish loosely with a sheet of aluminum foil. Place it in your pre-heated oven. -Bake this for 25 minutes covered. Then remove the foil and bake for another 5 minutes or so until the tops brown slightly. Serve.
QUICK ALMOND TREATS These are simply delicious and a snap to make! One of the fastest and tastiest treats to keep in your recipe file. You will love them!
INGREDIENTS: 1 sleeve of graham crackers (about 30 - 2" square crackers, I use no name brand) 1 - 1/2 cups of sliced almonds with the skin on 1 cup of butter 3/4 cup of tightly packed brown sugar
METHOD: -Line a baking pan with sides with parchment paper. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. -Lay the graham crackers in a single layer with the sides touching each other over the parchment. -Sprinkle the sliced almonds over top of the crackers. See how simple this is? -In a saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring this to a boil and boil for exactly 4 minutes, stirring often. -Pour the hot mixture evenly over all of the crackers. You will have enough to cover them all. -Place the pan in your oven and bake for exactly 6 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow the squares to cool. -Use a knife to break apart the graham squares when serving. -To store, and prevent sticking together, I separate the layers of crackers with a sheet of parchment paper in my cookie tin. ENJOY!

Tip of the Week: There are BUGS, BUGS, and more BUGS everywhere we humans congregate to, or live - like in our backyards, cottages, at the camp grounds and at all of the beaches. They want and need our blood to survive. So, we have to do something about these blood sucking BUGS!!! One way to do this is to use your paper tray that you get when you buy multiple coffees or teas. All you have to do is light up one end of it and place it on the ground near to where you are staying, laying or sashaying. The rest is up to the pesky, flying BUGS that will sniff in or absorb some smoke fumes. They won't like it and then they will fly away from your "Area of Fun," to BUG someone else. Please use caution and wisdom when setting any fire outdoors, whether small or large, especially if drinking is involved.

Need a little help coming up with ideas for decorating that “Man Cave”? Want to give your guy a place in the house that he can call his own? Does he still want to put that big light organ he made in high school in your living room? With Father’s Day coming up, some of you are scrambling to find Dad/hubby that one thing that says he’s important. Men usually have a harder time coming up with gift ideas for themselves, too. Even they don’t know what they want! The few times a year that they do go “shopping”, they end up buying it for themselves. I’m not saying that men are selfish; they just don’t seem to like to window shop as much as women. Check
June is finally here. Tis the month that is filled with lots of Celebrations, like Graduations, Weddings & Special Events & Awards, (like the Seeker Choice Awards at the Cornwall Golf & Country Club on June 21st.) June is the month where there is a lot of moving and traveling going on to new homes, new cities and towns - new adventures. Perhaps to make a "Fresh Start" to a new way of life somewhere else in the world. Also, June 21st is the official, first day of SUMMER!!! YAAAY!!! I absolutely love the summertime where there is lots of relaxing and resting going on. A lot of eating (BBQing), drinking (of all types), the playing of games of all kinds, swimming, dancing etc. The season where you can let your hair down (literally) and have yourselves a whole lot of SUMMERTIME FUN with Family & Friends!!!

Summer is a great time for entertaining. Gettogethers almost always involve food and now there are some great products available that can make you look like a “foodie,” too! With a little help from Orange Crate Food Co., you can spice up your meals a bit and refine your culinary talent. Spices can be added to make hot or cold party dips, cracker seasonings, cheese balls, and main and side dishes. Your family will want to enter you into one of those reality cooking shows! The beauty of Orange Crate is that it’s very inexpensive and it’s a Canadian company, too!!! Mrs. B’s Gifts & Home Decor has a wide selection of Orange Crate products. The store favorite is the party cracker seasonings: just take a large Ziploc bag and mix one tablespoon of seasoning with a third cup of canola oil. Then, add two sleeves of unsalted soda crackers and shake it up! Voila! A great snack available in six different flavours that even picky Aunt Bea would enjoy!
Hello there to all of you wonderful and beautiful people reading the Seeker this week. I really hope you all are enjoying this beautiful SUMMERlike weather we have been experiencing over the last few days. It's so HOT and very enjoyable to be able to just go out with as little on as possible. (All in "Good Taste" of course. Right?) Don't forget to wear a hat, or use a sun-umbrella or some sun screen to protect yourselves from over exposure to the harmful sunrays. Please don't forget about your pets. They need some shade and lots of water to help them keep hydrated, just like we humans have do. PLEASE DON'T LEAVE YOUR PETS IN CARS!!!

The Pursuit of Hoppyness Article by Sheila Dennison. Submitted Photo. Cornwall Ontario -- Many people gathered at the Nav Centre in Cornwall over the last weekend (Saturday, May 31st) for the first ever Eastern Ontario Festival of Beers. The soon to be annual event featured over 50 varieties of different craft beer to sample.
There were several brewers from different parts of Eastern Ontario, as well as from Calgary and Montreal. There was also a cider company from Picton, Ontario. Representatives from each brand were present to interact and chat with the public while serving their product.
CORNWALL SCRABBLE RESULTS May 2014 By Vivianne Panizzon, Club Director
----------------------------------------------
The venue was packed with over a hundred people circulating and visiting the different booths. Everyone was also encouraged to vote for their favourite brewery.
The deli bar also had non-alcoholic refreshments, sandwiches and assortments of cookies available for the guests. In addition to delicious tasting beer and food, there was also the sounds of music to stimulate the senses.
Acoustic performances by local musicians Chuck Leclair, Joe Hehir and Keegan Larose set the tone of the event and caught the ear of the festivalgoers. They performed some of their original songs as well as some classic covers that the audience knew very well.
