Wynne Hudak and Horwath ignore riding of SDSG during 2014 election Op-Ed by Jason Setnyk (News Editor of the Seeker)

Cornwall Ontario — It’s ‘Indecision 2014′ for the province of Ontario. On Thursday June 12th the Province of Ontario goes to the polls. Around Cornwall there were a couple of debates, lawn signs were erected, and some rhetoric could be found in the editorial pages of local newspapers. However this was a very quiet and and uneventful election for Cornwall and SDSG.

In 2011, Premier and Liberal leader at the time Dalton McGuinty, Conservative leader Tim Hudak, and NDP leader Andrea Horwath all visited and made campaign stops in Cornwall. With the retirement of Jim Brownell, each party saw SDSG as prime real estate up for sale. Locally the Conservatives won by a large margin and Jim McDonell became the new MPP.

So why is it none of the party leaders visited Cornwall and SDSG this time around? Quite simple: Incumbent MPP Jim McDonell is expected to win this riding by a landslide. During a five week campaign, political parties have limited time and resources, so they prioritize on swing riding’s. Riding’s like SDSG who overwhelmingly support a single candidate become irrelevant.

It is not an absolute guarantee that Jim McDonell will win, stranger things have happened in politics, however in all probability the incumbent MPP will retain his seat.

According to CBC, advanced voting is down by about 6% compared to the last Provincial election, and we can expect voter turn out to decrease once again. Yes people should vote, however this has not been the election to inspire people to do so.

From Liberal scandals and wasted tax dollars, to Hudak and the Conservatives reckless plan to cut 100,000 jobs, to the NDP who were late releasing their platform and seem more interested in pandering to soft Liberal votes, it has been enough to make voters wish there was a ‘none of the above’ option on the ballot.

If we want more people to vote, the only way that is going to happen is if there is something worth voting for, otherwise voters will continue to be apathetic or feel disenfranchised. It truly is ‘Indecision 2014′. Good luck voters, you will probably need it.

IN MY OPINION 'BEST PRACTICE' KILLS INNOVATION.

!

by Denis Thibault

Were you hired to follow the crowd or does your corporation/board of directors pay you to think for yourself? Best Practices is defined as a set of guidelines or ideas that represent the most efficient or prudent course of action. Best practices are often set forth by management, depending on the circumstances. While best practices generally dictate a recommended course of action, some situations require that you think for yourself. For me the term ‘Best Practice’ strikes up a bunch of images of a whole group of people and organizations working hard to become uniform & mediocre, led by those who want you to follow the crowd. Regardless of how similar any two organizations seem to be—even ones which on the surface appear identical— they will be anything but, so for me, the idea of bench-marking your organization against another, or worse, implementing a solution at your business or company simply because it worked at another, makes no sense.

If you choose not to think for yourself and look deeply at your own organization, it's reality and its make-up to drive innovation, and instead copy what another organization, which has different staff, structure, clients, partners, and culture to name but a few of the many factors which make similar organizations very different. Then you are choosing to create an organization where people will stop thinking, lose their motivation and become unproductive.

I read an interesting article this week by Sahar Hashemi titled ‘Act like a "Big Kid": The Importance of Being Clueless’, which was a reflective story on the start-up of Coffee Republic in the UK. If interested, you will find it on Facebook. It dawned on me after reading it, that had Sahar and her brother simply aimed for ‘Best Practice’ they would likely have failed to reach their potential and would have started another mediocre coffee business, instead their inexperience and lack of preconceptions became their strength. Tim Horton’s is another good example where they did not do best practices but invented their own. Are they successful?

Many of us no longer use or accept the phrase 'Best Practice' as I don't think it serves creativity, productivity, or innovation. We gave up on best practices ten plus years ago and decided to do what we thought was right and kept our reason for being as our touch stone with the goals of the Corporation. It works for us! Am I wrong to think this way? Maybe or maybe not, but I'd love to hear your opinion.

hands high not to mention the wonderful weather and the exciting fun enjoyed by all. Soon a magnificent mural will evolve from the dozens of tiles painted by the eager artists of all ages who have donated $20.00 toward a centre for the arts in Cornwall. Watch for the schedule at the Martintown Mill. Several of our members will be exhibiting there this summer. So can you. At its last meeting of the season June 4th, members of Focus Art had a challenging yet hilarious time carving faces from potatoes under the instructions of local artist Michel Sonnel. The "potato heads" ranged from sad creatures to bearded gnomes. Their true appearance will be revealed when, after 10 days of drying out, they are submerged for 24 hours in varnish, after which time the carvings take on a character of their own. It was truly a new experience for many of the members and a skill easily transferred to other mediums such as soap or for the hardy, stone .

Indie Showcase was an extraordinary night of Music Article by Sheila Dennison. Photo by Jason Setnyk. Cornwall Ontario — It was a great time for music lovers in Cornwall last Friday. Locals had the chance to attend an indie showcase that was taking place at Lola’s Pub and Grub. The venue was packed with familiar faces. The event began at 8:30 PM and featured 5 local bands plus acoustic performances by Jeff Stein which entertained the crowd during set changes.

Focus Art will be at the TAG for three weeks in July...The group plans to make their mark. Julia Lucio and Linda Geisel, Focus Art's two new vice-presidents, met an enthusiastic group of fourteen members on Tuesday, June 10th concerning the upcoming exhibition at the TAG in July. The two vice-presidents invited members to welcome this opportunity to show their art. They explained that it is also a time to sponsor activities that will invite citizens to know their Gallery better while they experiment in making art. To be part of the exhibition artists will need to be a member of Focus Art however all activities will be open to

the public. Because July is a festive month and thousands of people pass through the downtown area, it is hoped that this is an excellent occasion to promote our association along with TAG. The proposed schedule will soon be on our facebook page. Be a volunteer and make the visual arts part of our friendly city.

What some members are up to: Focus Art partnered up with le Centre culturel de Cornwall and offered face painting by three artists at "Les petits francos Saturday, June 7. Annually three artists paint faces during this morning of festivities, theatre, games and prizes which is spear-headed by Le Centre de resources familiales de l'estrie. Congratulations to the organizers and all the groups who participated. Kudos to members of Focus Art for leading the way in the mural activity on June 7th at Pommier Square for the A Centre for the Arts Collective. High Five for the Arts was a great success thanks to the leadership and volunteer work of TracyLynn Chisholm, Emily MacLeod, Heather Smith, Caryline Hébert, Elaine MacDonald and Suzanne Villeneuve. There were many other helpers during the day and the arts have raised their

The first act to perform was Farewell Davidson, a four-piece band based out of Wakefield, Quebec. The band has released a 6 track EP by the name of ”Hometown Lights”, which features all original songs. Following them was a local Cornwall cover band called Rock Bottom. They played some wellknown rock classics that really got the crowd moving. The lead singer had an amazing set of pipes and blew us all away with her magnificent voice. They really rocked the place.

The third act to hit the stage was another local band from Cornwall called Mad Summer. They are an alternative rock band compromised of 4 members. They have played around town at several other local venues such as La Maison, Vu Nightspot, etc.

The next band to perform was the Joel Sauve Band. It was an extraordinary night of hits performed by the trio. They rocked the venue with classic tunes as well as some original songs. Joel Sauve’s strong vocals and catchy guitar riffs make for an engaging performance. These guys know how to entertain a crowd. The evening finished with a high-energy set by Trailer Five. The local four-piece ”Trailer Rock” band are well-known in the area. They will be playing at this year’s Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off.

Ritual celebrates 20 Years of Music Article and photos by Jason Setnyk

Cornwall Ontario — It was a sold out concert Saturday night at Lola’s Pub in Cornwall for Ritual’s 20th Anniversary reunion show. But why have a reunion?

“Someone had mentioned to us that it was our 20th anniversary and that we should do a show. I mulled it around for a bit and approached the guys about it. We got together and talked it over at lolas over a beer. And we decided to do at least one show”, explains lead singer Sean Harley.

Ritual played a tight set, and there was little evidence that the band was reuniting after a long sympatico. The crowd danced and sung along to their favourite Ritual songs.

“Last night was amazing! It was great to see all our old friends and family together for one night again. There was so much love. People came from all over the place to see it”, says Mr. Harley.

Can we expect to see more of Ritual in the near future? “There are no more shows on the horizon, but I learnt from last night to never say never”, says Mr. Harley.

Saving for the Future Was the First Step.

Let Us Help You Make Those Savings Last. The weather is slowly warming up for all of us to enjoy, finally starting to feel like summer is here for a while. With this comes the addition of a few, light and delicious menu items at the Health Nut Shop… Many of my clients enjoyed a variety of great Health Nut salads last week-end at the shop. You can choose from the following: quinoa, couscous, tabbouleh, broccoli, riced cauliflower and 3 bean salads…all delicious and made fresh for your enjoyment. Come on in and treat your taste buds, great way to boost your energy and give great nutrition to your cells. You can even choose to have a delicious, organic iced tea…. have a seat on the patio and enjoy some natural vitamin D while chatting with family and friends. My friend, Julia Beshara also helps to prepare amazing, organic salad dressings, they literally flew off the shelf last week-end in one hour, so delicious!! She offers a maple syrup/garlic dressing and will introduce a balsamic vinaigrette this week-end.

Being the mother of 5 children, Julia’s specialty is creating gourmet baby food. This week-end there will be sweet potato medley and butternut squash/pear medley available for your young babies to enjoy. These will be frozen in individual cubes, all you need to do is take one out as needed, leave it thaw and there you have it, ready to be enjoyed by your little bundle of joy. Nothing beats the freshness of food , the fact that it is not canned and sitting on a store shelf for a long time is very important. There have been so many recalls by companies in this industry lately, why not play it safe and try this out. You will love its convenience, always remember that your baby’s health and nutrition is priceless!! Recognizing the ingredients is priority always….. I am very proud to have an on-going fundraiser at my shop “BEADS of LOVE”. This is in honor of Gail Prieur that lost her battle to brain cancer a few short months ago. Her family and friends have been working very hard for countless hours to create these beautiful bracelets, rings, key chains and wine stoppers in order to raise awareness for this very important cause so close to their hearts. As life would have it, there is another amazing individual in our community, Dr. Paul Poirier (Earthway Chiropractic Clinic owner) that will be hosting a “Bikers against Brain Cancer” on June 28th . I would love to help his cause as well….

How much can I withdraw to do everything I’ve planned? How much spending is too much spending? Will all the years of saving be enough? If these are the questions you’re asking yourself these days, let’s schedule a time when we can sit down and answer them together. We’ll take a look at all your investments — regardless of where you hold them — to determine if your savings match your plans, or if we can adjust your plans to meet your savings. A lot went into getting you to this stage in your life. Let us help you make sure you get the most out of it.

chosen other things to occupy their time with. We are all given the same amount of time, and it's only ever up to us to decide how to use it, or to quote Gandolf from Lord of the Rings, "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." We can work too much, shop too much, or watch television too much. Or we can choose when to break free of the monotony and do something different, even if it is only a trip to the park. It doesn't need to cost anything. I think of these outings like mini-vacations. No, they are not as big as a week in Mexico, but they are memorable none the less, AND I have read that little getaways are very healthy as far as emotional health and stress are concerned. So John and I will continue to break out of the routine of life and do things, and go places, such as my trip this week to Ottawa. It causes people to live longer, and have fun while doing so.

by Marlene Baker Another week has gone by and I want to wish you all the start of a happy summer season. Our winter was far too long, and so far, late spring has brought us sunny and warm weekends! I remember summers where it seemed that every weekend brought rain, and even the Cornwall Speedway was shutting down a lot of the Sunday evening races on account of rain. But so far, this has been a great spring for good weather on the weekends. I hope it continues that way!

I was fortunate indeed to be at the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa on the weekend to take part in their annual 'Retro Pin-Up Party' contest. I was probably twice the age of most of the participants, but I had a wonderful time, and fit right in. None of the other participants treated me any differently than anyone else, and my age seemed to disappear in the excitement of the event. In the photo, I second am from the left, and my daughter Ella is at the top to the right of the guitar player. What a lovely group of young ladies, and a very fun event to participate in. I also have had the pleasure, while here in Ottawa this week, to visit with some of my other children. The only person who says we are ever too old to participate in life is usually ourself. Instead of asking, 'why?', why not ask, 'why not?'. This is part of the secret of staying young - not being afraid to keep trying new things, and acting a little younger than our actual age. (and sometimes even acting a lot younger! LOL)

I mentioned shopping, which reminds me to remind you to please continue to support our thrift shops, as you are indirectly helping many people who are in need of help. I try to shop locally whenever possible, buying glue-on nails at the dollar store, and inexpensive jewelry, clothing and shoes at Ardene's. Most of what clothing you see me wearing has come from the local thrift shops. Check my photos, perhaps I'm wearing one of your old items! (but not if you don't donate) Sometimes when I can't find what I'm looking for, I'll shop on eBay and get fun things from China and other exotic places. So please shop locally and support your local merchants. This year, we bought (locally) a new patio set for the back deck, and have started having breakfast out there amongst the chirping birds, aromatic flowers, and the large trees in the back yards. I don't know why we hadn't thought of this before, as it's such a mini-escape just to be out of the house and in the fresh air. We hope to continue enjoying the outdoors as much as possible this year, and even take our bikes to Bicycle World for tune-ups and start cycling again. Any physical exercise will reduce stress and prolong life! It's human nature to dislike the idea of starting, but once we're active, it cheers us up, and even our thinking improves, due to the flow of oxygen through our blood and rejuvenating our brain cells. Moderate exercise is a cure for just about every disease out there, from heart disease, blood pressure, senility, bone loss, and many more! Our bodies were meant to move, not to be seated for long times at a desk or on a sofa. So get out there, enjoy the nicer weather, and keep moving! We know of an older gentleman who still rides a bike. He is close to 90 years of age. He said to us once, 'The Grim Reaper doesn't move fast. To keep away from him, all you need to do is keep moving.' No truer words were ever spoken, as medical research backs it up.

Johnny Radar and I were kayaking the other day, when it was 28 degrees out, and as I often do, I brought my bubble maker with me. The bubbles drift away in the wind, and when they touch the water, they bounce and keep on going. It's great fun, and adds a crazy little extra something to enjoying being out on the open water. Anyhow, I was moving the bubble wand around, and John got this photo of an extended bubble before it divided into individual spheres. One newly-formed bubble just happened to be right in front of my face as he took the photo. It's the little fun moments that we tend to remember in life, and especially if we have photos to keep the memory fresh. Nobody remembers what they did at work last autumn, but we might remember that walk in the woods amongst the colored leaves. All of us ought to take the time to enjoy life and put a bit of priority on having fun. Many people say they have no time to go to the park, or ride a bike, or get into a canoe, but that is only because they have

So until next week, keep smiling, keep anticipating miracles and pay it forward whenever you can. Be grateful for the things you might not even have yet, and you will attract all sorts of wonderfulness into your life, and those around you will be inspired to do the same! TR Leger School Graduation Ceremony

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to attend Niagara Falls ComicCon with local comic book store Fantasy Realm's owner, Randy Sauve. It was great to escape daily living into the world of comic books, fiction and fantasy once again. Yes, we did get to visit the local sights of Niagara Falls but also had the chance to represent "Team

The graduation ceremony for the Eastern Region campuses of TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education, took place on the evening of June 10th, at the former General Vanier School building, on 1500 Cumberland Street.

In terms of numbers of graduates, the class of 2013-14 counted a total of 131 graduates from our Eastern Regions. The Eastern campuses of Cornwall, Cornwall Foundations, Akwesasne-IO HA HI: IO, Alexandria, Alexandria Foundations, Akwesasne Foundations, Williamsburg and Williamsburg Foundations, celebrated 85 of those grads who were in attendance for the ceremony in Cornwall.

The event was a huge success as was demonstrated by the full house in the General Vanier auditorium. School board trustees, special guests and presenters, staff from TR Leger, as well as a staggering number of friends and family were all in attendance to cheer on this year’s graduates. Pictured above is Yves L’Ecuyer, this year’s proud valedictorian standing with TR Leger’s principal, Geoff Trasuk. Yves delivered the valedictory address with sincerity and heart. He will be heading off to the world of work while looking into apprenticeship opportunities. We congratulate all of the graduates and wish them success and happiness!

business." Shown here are Randy & I with three of the Comic Book Men which many of you may know from the weekly television series. This past week I had the unfortunate opportunity to attend my uncle's funeral. However, though funerals are indeed a very solemn time of your life, I would like to focus on the positive aspects of this experience and take this opportunity to thank everyone that offered messages of condolences and who took the time to attend and pay their respects. It is obvious what a wonderful, loved, respected and adored man my uncle Rejean Boyer was and I have never seen such a funeral that was such well-attended, beautifully adorned or such an outpouring of love and support. Special thanks as well to Hospice Cornwall, Cornwall Community Hospital and Janet McDonell Pavilion, Roy Florist and Boulerice Funeral Home for all of their support, empathy, caring and help in this time of need for The Boyer Family.

How do you define lucky? For Kevin Rivette it is being able to give back to an organization that helped him at the age of 15 and his family, including his son and his daughter. “My baby girl is now 16, the CHEO family helped her in her medical challenges and still does today”. It was a humbling experience for Mr. Rivette, to see young children there who needed CHEO’s services, watching him perform at the CTV studio. “As I walked on set, I looked at the eyes of the young kids who were sitting in front of me! One family holding their young one and realizing for me to be up on this stage singing for them, how truly lucky I really am!” Proceeds from the telethon will help CHEO with renovations and buying new equipment.
