Mayor Bob Kilger to faceoff against Jamie Gilcig Article and photos by Jason Setnyk
Cornwall Ontario — Then there were two. Two-time Mayor Bob Kilger (photo top left) is planning to run for a third time. It has been a difficult few years for the Cornwall Mayor and former MP. On a personal level Kilger faced perhaps his most difficult challenge to date battling cancer. On a political level he faced perhaps his most difficult term with the 1.4 million dollar human resources boondoggle at City Hall. Now the former NHL referee and Cornwall Royals Coach is ready to face off with a former Video Statographer for the Montreal Canadiens. Bob Kilger’s only opponent thus far is Jamie Gilcig (photo top right). Mr. Gilcig, who is Editor of the Cornwall Free News, was the first to announce his run for Mayor.
A lot has changed since the 2010 election when Mr. Gilcig endorsed Bob Kilger for Mayor. The out spoken gonzo journalist has had a less than cordial relationship with City Hall since then. The climax of which was when Mayor Bob Kilger hit the panic button and had Mr. Gilcig removed from Council Chambers for a t-shirt he disapproved of (the shirt depicted the Mayor on a milk cartoon with the headline ‘missing’).
Mr. Gilcig has criticized the Mayor for being missing several times, including during the final budget session, and most recently at a public meeting concerning the waterfront storage tanks.
Born in Montreal Quebec, Gilcig is a screen writer, owner of Seaway Radio online, and former owner of Auctionpie.com. He is also a past director of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, and in 2011 he was nominated the Federal Green Party candidate for the SDSG riding.
The next Cornwall municipal election takes place October 27th 2014 election. Those wishing to run for Council have until 2pm on September 12th.

What you should know about Professional Organizing Part 3 of 4 Do You Believe You Cannot Afford To Hire A Professional Organizer?
15% O F F
You can also have your restaurant reviewed for extra exposure! Simply invite us to sample some of your dishes and we'll do the rest!
Do You Need To Throw Things Away? You will never be pressured by a professional organizer to discard items you are not ready to part with. The job of the organizer is to guide you through the process of determining what is most important to you and creating spaces for those things. In addition about knowing the locations of local charities if you elect to make donations, for which in some cases you can obtain an income tax receipt. The organizer must be aware of the proper disposal methods to be followed during the decluttering process with respect to the environment. This means adhering to the area’s recycling policy regarding garbage disposal regulations, toxin/chemical disposal, ewaste and metal recycling. Some People Cannot Make Decisions About What To Discard - A Professional Can Help! A professional organizer understands how difficult it can be for you to decide what things should stay close at hand, what should go in a bin to charity or to the dump. This is precisely why you need the help of an organizer! The attachment of a professional organizer is to you, the client, since he/she does not have an emotional attachment to your possessions. Without that attachment the organizer can be very practical and realistic. One of the things an organizer does best is to help you make the best decisions in a way that respects your feelings and values! A professional organizer is highly trained and it is these skills that make the experience and investment so worthwhile. Can You Just Give Clients Direction So They Can Get Organized On Their Own? Organizers will certainly be happy to give you guidance, directions and even a step by step plan. However, this rarely works, unless you are determined, committed and self-disciplined. How many times have you tried to do it on your own? It all comes down to time, knowledge and the support of a professional organizer to keep you focused. Read part 4 in the Seeker next week ...

• How much is your time worth to you? • How many hours, days or weeks would it take you to sort through all of your stuff? An organizer will takes less than a third of the time you would spend. • How much time have you wasted in the past searching for things you could not find? • How many times have you organized your home or business in the past only to have it return to chaos because your system did not actually work? • What is the value of peace and serenity in your life? • What has been the emotional cost? • What keeps you up at night? • Do you run through a list of things you have to do the next day, or that you did not get done today? • Do you feel overwhelmed and anxious when you look around you? • Has your relationship with your family or friends suffered because of the chaos? • Have you stopped inviting people into your home? • Do you feel shame or guilt and avoid having people over or circumvent hiring a professional to help you out. Eventually this shame leads to depression.

Just Dance
Marriage Can Be Hazardous to Your Your Health” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
When you are not feeling the best, or things are not going great, take a moment, listen to some good dance tunes and just dance. There is something therapeutic about listening to a song and just letting it move you.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATIONS S w w w. w e t h i n k i t . c a
broke the tension and cemented the plot moving forward. Recently, I was feeling a little melancholy baby, I set my IPad to shuffle through my songs, started doing housework and Pitbull and Christina Aguilera came on. In no time, I was singing along, and dancing to the infectious beat as I tackled a small load of dishes and laundry. In no time chores were getting done, I was feeling better and the mixture of my musical tastes wafted through my place. TV shows often use this as a bonding or plot movement device. I recently started binge watching Orphan Black with the phenomenal Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany. The season 2 finale aired this past weekend and one of the highlights is the dance sequence. In the midst of major danger and action, the sisters united and for a few moments, let their worries fade as they held an impromptu dance party. The sisters are all played by the same actress and each has their own unique style. It
Grey's Anatomy also frequently used dance as a release and bonding moment. With another great Canadian actress Sandra Oh leaving the show, they included a famous dance party between her character Christina Yang and Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey. It signified this best-friend relationship and was a memorable scene. One place I worked we would do this as well. If one of us or all of us were having a particular bad day, we would call a little meeting and dance for a minute or so. It helped us return refreshed and focused. Dancing is good for the soul, helps move friendships and relationships to new ground, and even if you are all alone and faced with some task, some haeartbreak or some major issue, take a few minutes and just dance. You may feel a lot better afterwards. So when the rain falls, dance in the rain.

by Sharyn Thompson A NEW OATMEAL RHUBARB DESSERT I have a few favourite cookbook authors which I trust implictly, knowing if I make one of their recipes, it will be perfect. Edna Staebler, a Mennonite lady from western Ontario is certainly one of them! For years, I would borrow her cookbooks from the Cornwall Public Library. Happily, I finally had a chance to purchase her three cookbooks recently. The oatmeal rhubarb dessert recipe comes from her book, 'Food that really schmecks'. She says you can use any fruit you wish, but rhubarb is her favourite one to use. This recipe is a bit similar to an oatmeal crisp, but the fruit is in the middle, not the bottom. It isn't a fancy dessert, but it sure tastes good! Try it!
EDNA'S FRUIT CRUNCH you can use any fruit you wish. you will need 4 cups of fruit total. Peaches are nice in August, as well, you can use raspberries, blueberries or strawberries. She says rhubarb is her favourite one to use. you can use a 9" square pyrex baking dish or use an 8" X 11" pyrex baking dish which I used.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE CRUMBLE:
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 cup brown sugar, packed 3/4 cup quick-cooking organic rolled oats (we sell this at my store, Sharyn's Pantry) 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup of melted butter
FOR THE FILLING:
1 cup of white sugar 2 heaping tbsp. cornstarch 1 tsp. pure vanilla 1 cup of cold water 4 cups of washed, 1/2" to 1" sliced rhubarb (add only after the filling is cooked and thickened)
METHOD: -Spray or grease your baking pan. Pyrex is preferred for even baking. You can use a 9" square pyrex baking dish OR an 8"X 11" pyrex baking dish. This is what I used because I couldn't find my 9" square pan. haha! Set your oven to 350 degrees F. -In a bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats and cinnamon. Pour the melted butter over this and mix with a fork until the mixture is evenly combined and crumbly in texture. -In a saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, cold water and vanilla. Stir to combine. -Cook this mixture over MED-HI heat until it thickens and bubbles. Stir constantly. It will take about 4 or 5 minutes. The mixture will become clear. Remove the saucepan from the heat. -Add the sliced rhubarb into the hot, clear sauce. -Spread half of the crumbly mixture into your prepared pyrex baking pan. Pour the rhubarb and sauce mixture evenly over the crumbly layer. Spread to cover evenly. Top with the remaining crumble mixture. -Bake the dessert in the 350 degree F. oven for 55 to 60 minutes. The top will be golden and the filling will start to bubble. Serve hot, warm or at room temperature. It's YUMMY! ENJOY!

PARADE OF NATIONS
Our WEEKLY LOOK at CHARITIES & ORGANIZATIONS in our COMMUNITY!
• A general store to display more of Marie and Rudy' collections; • An Art Centre (composed of a performing theatre featuring myths and legends of the world, an area featuring international music and fashions and an area to teach international dying arts); • An international Tea and Coffee Parlour; • A picnic area for families; • Collectors' cabins for people wanting to network, house and display their personal collections; • An administration building, a large parking lot, and a warehouse located on another property for the museum. On April 22nd, 2007, the Parade of Nations was born to promote our area’s culture and multiculturalism. The first year, 65 country flags were displayed in addition to many floats. In 2009, the Parade of Nations’ organization proposed to help and promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion of developmentally challenged individuals and those with special needs living in Akwesasne, Cornwall and SD&G, for the purpose of being understood and accepted within the community, through a program called “A Light in the Tunnel”. As of March 22nd, 2013, Parade of Nations for the Developmentally Challenged
Léandre Robichaud, a man born more than a century ago, would be very proud today. Léandre's mother suffered a nervous breakdown when he was just 10 years old. He went on to be given away to a farmer who beat him, was sold as a slave on a sailing vessel and then finally found freedom with the Barnum and Bailey circus at age 12 as an artist, followed by a 20 year career as a trapeze artist. The Barnum and Bailey people became Léandre's family, and he accepted each and every one of them, regardless of their physical challenges, deformities or differences - he loved them all and always did everything he could to protect them. Léandre went on to marry and pass on his life lessons to his daughter, Marie Morrell who hopes to carry on his legacy by passing on these life lessons that he taught to her:
• love everyone equally, including those developmentally challenged; • develop a passion and learn to appreciate all art forms and history; • never judge anyone as you will never be able to fully understand what he/she was exposed to or what he/she has been through; • embrace everyone you meet as your new family no matter where they come from, no matter the color of their skin • protect nature; • learn through the wisdom of the elders, feel and imagine your dreams as they have already happened; • and above all, never be afraid to tell people you love them, they eventually will say it back to you.
Because she cared and loved her father so much, Marie promised her father when she was only twelve years old that she would build a museum to display his art along with all the art forms of the people she would encounter, including a representation of their personal passions. She promised to let people know about our world through everyone’s ancestral origins. In 2004, after retiring from a career in the Government and as a private consultant, Marie finally found the right piece of land, in the Cornwall area, to fulfill her promise. The land is located at 3301 Vincent Massey Drive, across from Guindon Park on Highway #2 just before entering Long Sault. The museum will be built as soon as all the permits are obtained. Three quarters of the land is in South Stormont allowing for fireworks activities. Despite the delays, Marie Morrell is still very determined to fulfill her dream and promise. Together with Rudy Tabak, the master mind behind the construction of the project, they will hopefully soon be able to store the more than 30,000 items to be showcased in 12 buildings of their 8 to 10 year project, The Collector's Museum Multicultural and Art Centre - International. When Marie passes away, she is donating the museum to the people of Akwesasne, Cornwall and SD&G. The museum (a small village) will consist of the following: • The Léandre Robichaud building; • A collection of seven miniature villages of Department 56; • A collection of "O Gauge" trains showcasing layout displays and related trains memorabilia and die cast vehicles; • An international art and collectibles gift shop; • A multicultural building representing the 350 + nations and groups composing our ancestral origins; • A high class International market where only people of the area can sell their products and local businesses will be able to advertise permanently by erecting a vendor's cabin; •A bandshell where our area performers can perform and promote themselves free or charge, pass the hat and do fundraising; • A large piazza to celebrate the cultural holidays of the world; • An international garden featuring various landmarks of the world; • A convention centre for exhibitions and to feature the world's cuisines;
became a registered Canadian charitable organization. The Parade of Nations for the Developmentally Challenged has always been and will continue to be a volunteer run organization. Now that it is a registered charity, they are proud to be able to offer an income tax receipt for cash donations and gifts-in-kind of $10.00 or more. Says Marie, "Historically, as individuals we all share a common ancestry since we are all ultimately descending from people who lived thousands of years ago. We do not all look or act alike because our ancestors evolved and adapted to various geographical environments and human genetics. Our vision is “oneness, acceptance, inclusion and harmony” between all individuals no matter who they are or where they come from, including those with specials needs afflicted by disabilities (physical and mental.) It includes people of all ages and backgrounds with a cognitive, emotional, or physical impairment, especially one related to abnormal sensory or motor development, appearing in infancy or childhood and involves a failure or delay in progressing through the normal developmental stages of childhood; and individuals affected physically by a disease, an accident or by a disorder of the mind as a result of trauma." It also seeks to make the community aware of the difficulty of families and institutions to care for and continuously stimulate and develop the abilities of a challenged person. Through various activities, workshops and education, their objectives are to:
• Provide people with disabilities with a facility with athletic, recreational and educational activities to maintain good physical, mental and emotional ability; • Provide counseling on how to master life skills and other support services to enable people with disabilities to become more independent in the community; • Provide training and support for people with disabilities to help them obtain gainful employment; • Provide financial assistance to young people with physical or mental disabilities to enable them to participate in camps with programs tailored to their needs. In 2009, the parade evolved into a festival to allow food vendors, artists, artisans, small businesses and all types of organizations to set up for more than one day. In 2010, Elaine MacDonald, City of Cornwall Councillor added the Sunday Kite Festival to the celebration. The Sunday Kite Festival will take place once again this year in September. Trophies are awarded in many different categories of flyers and it is sponsored by UPI Snack Shop Brookdale. Please contact Elaine MacDonald for more information at 613-938-7763. Continued on page 17

Saying Goodbye As a native of Cornwall, I am sometimes reminded that it is not easy to integrate our little city ``groups``. I don’t know about that and find it frustrating when it is used as an excuse to claim there is nothing going on in this city. I would like to tell you about an artist who arrived here a little over 10 years ago from Ottawa. Patricia Lessard Fish and her companion Jacques Descoteaux decided to make Cornwall their home. For them, there was the beautiful river, a reasonable real estate and a healthy bilingual art community. Patricia had just won a prestigious award at the National Art Gallery for one of her paintings and was still an active member of Art East, an art group in Ottawa. She served mainly as their volunteer translator for documents sent to members. Patricia wanted to find some of the familiar activities she had enjoyed in Ottawa here in Cornwall and discovered a rich but scattered art community. She reached out to the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery, to different groups, to the Centre Culturel de Cornwall in early 2000 with little success. After her persistent networking, Patricia along with several enthusiastic artists establish what is known today as l’association Focus
Determined to offer area and new artists a space to present their art, Patricia worked with the Centre Culturel de Cornwall (124 Anthony) to use their great hall and named it “la Galerie le Corrid’ART. Since its inception in 2010 over 40 artists have enjoyed the opportunity of an exhibition, vernissage and secure presentation of their work for a month at a time. These are but a few examples of Patricia’s legacy to Cornwall. She has helped so many people, befriended artists and art lovers. Her impact on our community is profound and must not go unnoticed. Patricia and Jacques are moving to Ottawa to be closer to their family. Merci Patricia. Aurevoir à toi et à Jacques. We wish you well.
Merci...Bravo....Kudos...to the Ladies at the Seeker. In the name of the members of Focus Art, I wish to congratulate Julia Lucio and Mai-Liis Renaud for their generous contribution to this community. I was privileged to represent Focus Art and award photographer Jason McNamara with the Visual Art Award and was very impressed by the entire evening. Benefits went to the collective for the Arts Centre. Hats off to all the winners, to the entertainment and Cornwall Golf. The arts and business played well together. Well done.
REMINDER The exhibition at the TAG is coming up very quickly. Don't let the theme "Summer in the City - L'été en ville" stump you. Think colour; all your work that might bring forth the joy of play, relaxing, summer...Perhaps the word city is baffling you...think out of the box and make sure you are part of this exhibition. Visit: focusartonline.org for more information.
Above is a painting of Patricia that artist Rose Desnoyers painted of her when we they went to North Carolina together and right is Patricia painting at her easel.

Art Association. She drew on her experience with Art East to help draft the first edition of our constitution and hold our initial meeting at Sue’s art Gallery (today known as the Social). Patricia and Jacques, who was enjoying photography, multiplied their efforts to build this solid base of artist. We remember The War Bride project that took F.A. members to Parliament in Toronto, workshops on building a portfolio, the many pleine-air sessions (Thousand Islands, South Carolina, Grey’s Creek, l’Echo d’un Peuple and many more).

BIG IN EUROPE BUT NEW TO CORNWALL Dinner Light and Laser Shows COVER STORY Article written by Sheldon Grant (DJ Shell shock) Cornwall is the birthplace for 3D Creations to bring a very popular event from Europe here. For people who are not sure what to expect at an event like the one coming up on July 4th and 5th, this will leave a lasting impression which you will want to attend future events.
The event consists of a great tasting dinner, small discussion on the history, and then the experience of watching lights and lasers move to a defined sequence that follows the rhythms and feelings created by the music selected. We usually cover many music styles like Celtic, Rock, Classical, Pop, Instrumental, Movie Themes, Dance etc.
•
From previous events held, the spectators end up wanting to watch the 30 minute sequence again to absorb everything happing with the lights. When you show up to the event, you get a chance to see the two thousand pound contraption up close and personal. This 20 foot long and 12 foot high hi-tech wall of over fifty different light fixtures will impress people from all ages. State of the art computer software controls all of the lights which require numerous hours to program and in turn will create a wonderful piece of art for everyone to enjoy. We have all ready started work on a Fall and Christmas show which we hope will take place in one of the local churches in Cornwall.
show (starting at 8pm) are on sale now and can be picked up at Vieux Duluth Restaurant (Brookdale Location) or reserved by calling 613-932 4812 (Sheldon or Mai-Liis).
Art is very important to the community and as a symbol of our commitment we will be making a donation from the sales of the event to The Centre for the Arts Collective. We appreciate you taking the time to inform yourselves on what is happening in Cornwall and hope that you can participate in this event.
Continued from page 14 The Seaway Train Show is another fundraiser which helps the Parade of Nations' fundraising efforts. The Seaway Lighthouse Modular Train Club was created in 2012, as a non-for-profit organization, to promote the hobby, help local charities with fundraising and as entertainment during local fairs or other local events. The club is working in partnership with Via Rail Canada and distributes a Via Rail activity bag during a show. Membership is by invitation only. The club is an extension of the Collector's Museum Multicultural and Art Centre - International. This year's Seaway Train Show will be held on July 19th and 20th from 10:00 to 4:00 at the Long Sault Arena. Visit www.seawaytrainclub.com for more information. Every year, the Parade/Festival counts on the donations, free services and generosity of various local citizens, businesses, local media, groups and volunteers and the many sponsors listed on the Parade of nations website. More than 300 volunteers are required for its events and social activities. These volunteers are willing to share their various artistic backgrounds and administrative skills as well as to carry the country flags constituting the historical ancestral genetic make up (including the flags of countries that no longer exist). Parade of Nations invites the community to get behind their initiative and grant them their support by donating money, volunteering, becoming a sponsor or attending their events. They are asking for your monetary assistance to continue the progress they've made through their fundraising events. Remembering that every penny counts, please make a donation, whether it is a dollar or more by sending a cheque to Parade of Nations, 1621 Joyce Street, Cornwall Ontario, K6J 1Y8 or by calling 613-936-6873 for donations to be picked up. You can also email info@paradeofnations.com or visit the website online at www.paradeofnations.com for more information.

Hi there to everyone who is reading Cornwall's most Positive and Informative paper this week. WOW! What about this summery weather we have been experiencing of late??? It's been amazingly ~hot~, sunny and so beautiful to finally be outside enjoying the lush flora and fauna. I love to go around town to see and enjoy all of the multitude of different flowers, bushes and trees in people's gardens and front yards. It is such a delight for me to behold and to take in and smell the exotic perfumes of Mother Nature, herself. Sometimes they make me sneeze, Achoo!!! Bless me...but that is the price I am willing to pay in order to enjoy what nature has out there for me. What a BLAST John & I and everyone else that attended the ~Seeker Choice Awards~ had at the ~Cornwall Golf & Country Club~ last Sat. June 21st.
There were casino games provided by ~Party Time Entertainment~ which everyone loved to play. Even if you had never played before, their awesome staff were so friendly and helpful that it didn't matter. would They explain to each of us, "Non poker players" on how to play. Thank you so much to the staff for providing a great evening of FUN!!! Oh, did we Play and have ourselves some FUN!!! It was nonstop fun all evening long, beginning with the dancing talents of a bunch of lovely girls from the ~Powell School of Dance~. Thank you girls. Our dancing music for the evening was provided by ~DJ ShellShock~. Great Times! Great Tunes! Oh, Yes... the food (baby potatoes & carrots along with a
piece of succulent chicken, bathed in a mushroom gravy) was most DEEELICIOUS!!! The smooth red and white wines we had the pleasure to sip on were sponsored by local businesses and were provided by ~Wine Kitz~. I also want to thank the serving & bar staff who were so friendly, very efficient and did a most wonderful job that night. John and I were both nominated for an award for the first time this year and we were in the top five of our categories. I was nominated for ~Contributor of the Year~ and John was for ~Visual Artist of the Year~. We didn't win, but we certainly felt like Winners being among so many talented and forthright business owners that night. For example, Mike Pliss and his lovely wife, Natalie of ~ Mobile Gamerz~ WON for Home-Based Business. Larry Sylvain and his sweet wife, Nancy of ~The Port Theatre~ won for Existing Business of the year. I just want to commend and congratulate all of the other winners and nominees this year. I almost forgot to mention and thank Angela Freeland of ~Above & Beyond~ so much for doing such a marvelous job on colouring and doing my Fabulous Up-Do for this wonderful evening. I looked and felt like the "Belle of the Ball." I would definitely recommend Angela for all of your hair needs and wants. She's the "hair lady" every girl wants to have to be able to feel and look their very best. Thank you... Thank you... Thank you. Perhaps I will, and can be, one of the ~Seeker Choice Award~ winners next year...Right??? Tip of the Week: BE HAPPY!!! SMILE, LAUGH, GIGGLE, GAFFAW!!! Tell some jokes or funny stories... Share some "Happy News" with your family or friends or with someone who needs a Pick Me Up. Life Is Too Short, Not To Be Happy In It. It's not healthy to be mad, sad or upset. STRESS will be the end of us, if we let it. So when you wake up in the morning.. YOU DECIDE WHAT KIND OF DAY YOU WILL BE HAVING. It's all up to YOU to make it so!!! Until next time... Acts of KINDNESS are the Blossoms of the SOUL. Please do your part and Be KIND this week...If only in a small way. Give away your SMILE and it will come back to you tenfold. I Promise. Scouts Honor. Thank you for reading ~Positively Marlene~ this week. Marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca
Sun Life Financial’s Epic Cycle for Diabetes Article and photos by Scott Beck
Sun Life Financial Canada 'Epic Cycle for Diabetes' will make a difference in the lives of over 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. The tour stopped in Cornwall last Tuesday afternoon at the Sun Life office on Second near Cumberland.
This is the second year Sun Life Financial cyclists have joined Team Diabetes to cycle and raise funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association. This year’s team of nine will cover a total of 900 kilometres, starting in in Peterborough and ending in Chicoutimi, Quebec.
Team members raised $20,000 for the Association.
The ride is the undertaking of almost 30 Sun Life employees from all over the country who have banded with the Canadian Diabetes Association. The riders will be making the 900-kilometre trek from Peterborough to Quebec City this week to raise awareness and fund-raising for the charity. The Epic Cycle initiative set a goal of raising $20,000 for the cause -- which has been already reached as riders look to garner even more backing throughout the campaign. These funds will be used to provide programs for the diagnosed, fund additional research, expand support networks and foster summer camps for diabetic youth.
down and catch their breath with cold water, fruit and snacks waiting for them when they arrived. “We had an amazing ride along the St. Lawrence River and were escorted by the local police force, who made sure that we arrived in Cornwall safely”, said Matt, the spokesperson of the group.
The cycling team includes managers, advisors, and family who have taken time out of their busy schedule to support this worthy cause. Cyclists appreciated the opportunity to cool
