Letters and Opinions MPP Jim McDonell critical of T h r o n e Speech - the w y n n e Government outlined t h e i r intended p o l i c y direction for the upcoming session during the Speech from the throne on thursday. “the liberals are planning to continue to spend way beyond their means” – MPP Jim Mcdonell commented. “increasing our debt puts frontline service funding at risk and will hurt families in every part of the province, including those having the hardest times – the young, the disabled, the poor and the seniors.” Moody’s credit rating agency changed ontario’s economic outlook from “stable” to “negative” on wednesday and are threatening a credit downgrade, if the budget is passed as originally presented. “with interest rates at a 20-year low, this can only lead to higher borrowing costs and further cuts to vital services” – MPP Mcdonell continued. “the liberals will have to cut their spending, and their record on this matter is dismal. we have already seen silent cuts to healthcare services such as eye surgeries and blood sugar test strips, and new taxes and fees imposed on businesses and residents. this throne Speech takes ontario in the wrong direction”. “if guaranteeing frontline services is your priority, you have to focus on making sure they will be there 20 years from now” – MPP Mcdonell concluded. “the downgrade is a warning that cannot be ignored. the ontario PC Caucus remains committed to getting ontario’s finances in order and making the Province competitive and attractive to job-creators. these are essential steps to ensuring ontarians can benefit from a dynamic job market and the high quality of public services they expect”. SUNDAY JULY 13th 2014 HoUSe Band - 4:30PM - BUSKerS dreaM the original focus for the three friends was to simply get together a couple nights a week and jam songs that they liked and share a few laughs. with Marie Morrell THE KEY TO IMPLEMENTING ANY ROUTINE IN YOUR LIFE Part 1 of 3 By definition routine is a set of customary and often mechanically performed procedures or activities. its purpose - to gain a sense of order in your life. Giving a structure to your day will make you feel in control and on top of things. a routine will not work if you're using the idea of "routine" to justify hours and hours spent, in the house, trying to keep everything perfect and spotless. Establishing A Routine all you need to establish a routine is something to get you up in the morning, somewhere to go, and something to look forward to in the day ahead. the routine must fit your life style, i.e., a household with young children, teens, elderly, single, married couple, developmentally challenged, retired business owner, etc. a routine must also take into consideration your energy level. a routine is a key part of everybody’s life and it is especially important for those suffering from depression. Start small and gradually build up your own expectations of what you feel you can do within your day; there is a big difference between difficult and impossible. However if a routine is making you feel stressed out, revise it until it becomes productive by giving yourself small daily tasks you feel you can do. Being flexible and adapting routines as your children get older can help alleviate stress. For example, changing routines for teenagers could be linked to milestones, such as getting their first part-time job.

GOOD EATS ...

one of the most important things you can do for all your children, as well as yourself, is establishing a bedtime routine (morning and evening). Maintaining a bedtime routine will ultimately help all of you reach your goals. Plan one hour each day to do your household chores by breaking them down into more manageable daily tasks. Setting aside a specific day each week to do the whole housework can be overwhelming. eat regularly by setting a specific time each day to plan and make your meals. Making sure to do things you enjoy will result in making your daily routine a bit easier and satisfying. it is important to fit your family and friends into your routine but it is very easy for someone to distract you from your routine. therefore, arrange a set day and time each week to see your family and friends, to ensure your other daily routines are not disrupted. organize the days and times around your favourite tV shows, which are part of your routine.

Positively Marlene

Hello again to all of my wonderful readers. this week i would like to talk about the temporary aspect of many things we come to love. this may be our children who grow up and leave the nest, or aged loved ones passing on. But i have two things i wish to specifically talk about, and especially how we can respond to these things in a positive way. one of these things is our bridge. the old bridge is coming down, and tuesday gave us one last opportunity to walk on the majestic old bridge for a final time. neither John or i had ever walked on this bridge, so it was a first for us. i, for one, made a point of going and taking plenty of photos, and so i will avoid the regret of wishing i had gone, but not making the time to. our memories tend to center around the special times, the trips to the beach, or a last walk on a very significant bridge. i hope everyone who grew to love Cornwall's old bridge, took advantage of the opportunity on tuesday to go and see her one last time. once it's gone, some of us will regretfully wish we had taken the chance while it was there.

So my point today is to remind everyone to enjoy what we have while we have it. Visit beautiful places often, and take many photos. etch beauty into your memories, by spending special times at special places, whether it be the beach, a favorite forest path, or kayaking down a favorite waterway. nothing lasts forever, but the memories can if we create them. when we do take the effort to watch a sunrise, or go somewhere special, it is especially satisfying to share that time with someone. this is often what makes memories special, the fact that we can remember the other person's reaction to whatever we were experiencing at the time. Beauty and amazement is all around us, and we only need to take the time to look for it, and bring along a family member or friend when we can. Tip of the Week: our mind can only process one thought at a time. if you catch yourself worrying, or thinking of negative things, try to pop a positive thought in its place. think of the positive thing and enjoy the thought, as the negative one can't return unless we allow it to. too often, it is easy to worry too much, or fear things, or go to the 'what if's'. Since we can't change anything with fear or worry, just focus on the positive events that we each have in our lives. if you can't think of anything, think of the fact that you woke up to enjoy another day, another chance to change things in your life for the better. Since nothing lasts forever, make each day count, and perhaps you will even inspire someone else to smile and see things from a better place. i try to do this each and every day, and often, people have told me that i have had an inspirational effect on improving their day. that only adds to my own happiness and positive outlook. we can all do this, once we choose to get into the habit of doing so.

event organizer alain lauzon is really enthused that the event is still a vital part of the community. “ManY local merchants and organizations such as the alexandria and district Chamber of Commerce help the event because they feel they want to contribute to youth culture and education” says lauzon. “You certainly don’t have to be a skateborder to enjoy this festival”, says lauzon, “the quality of the entertainment is phenomenal!”

Until next week, this is Marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca urging each of you to smile at someone this week. it's the only thing you can give to someone else, yet still keep for yourself. one thing i chose to give away last week, was a hat. i was at a store, and the cashier had commented on it, and remarked that she liked it a lot. after we left, i felt i had to go back and give her the hat. (i still have the other 99 and won't really miss that one) once again, the effect of innocently sharing something put a very big smile in my heart.

the other temporary thing we often take for granted is nature. John and i kayak along a very secluded stretch of untouched creek, with natural settings on both sides of the water, running along for many kilometers. at least, it used to be secluded. this is the sixth summer in which we've kakayed there. the shores are often filled with Great Blue Herons, egrets, Kingfishers, and many other birds, some living high in the trees that run along the banks of the creek. the water contains beavers, huge carp, and many other fish. along the shorelines, we see nesting birds, living just inches above the waterline, and many stunning dragonflies, including the huge white-tails. But just this week, when we visited there again, we were shocked to see huge machinery and pile upon pile of tree roots, preparing to be burned. the shoreline was missing its trees, and even the bushes near the water had been ripped out. there was a bit of an oil spill floating where the workers had been, and they had pushed debris right into the water. we hardly

recognized the area, as such drastic measures had been taken. there are solar generating fields behind this area, and it is apparent that they are adding more, right up to the water's edge. But they have disturbed and forever destroyed the natural beauty of the shoreline. in a nearby area, they built only as far as about forty or fifty feet from the water, but here, they have destroyed everything right to the water's edge.

He was apart of the Benson Group that hosted a Benson BBQ. Family and children enjoyed free hot dogs and hamburgers. there was also a long line up for face painting with Carilyn Hebert. From flowers, to bees, to their favourite super heroes, children had their faces decorated in an assortment of colours and designs. “the Board of directors of the United way of S. d. & G. are thrilled to host this family event as a symbol of our thanks , a day we can all come together to enjoy and celebrate”, said danny aikman, United way Board President. there was also plenty of games, prizes, and freezie treats. FROM MY PANTRY

A Wonderful Make-Ahead Recipe...

i think i was born to bake bread! there is that special something when you are up to your elbows in flour, kneading a soft yielding yeast dough. it is a happy place for me to be! i tried a new recipe to make 'butterhorns', similar to a croissant without all of the trouble and work. You allow the dough to rise in the bowl until double, then divide it into 4 equal pieces. roll each piece of dough out into a circle, spread it with butter, slice it into 8 wedges and roll each piece of dough up into a croissant shape. at this point, freeze the rolls for future use or allow to rise and bake the same day. these rolls are simply deliCioUS! it will be on my to do list when we have a family get together. if you bake bread, you have to try this recipe! MAKE AHEAD BUTTERHORNS the recipe will make 32 large croissant shaped rolls. INGREDIENTS: • 2 tbsp. dry active yeast (Buy Sharyn's Pantry bulk yeast, always refrigerated and a great price!) • 1/3 cup warm water • 2 cups of warmed 2% milk about 115 degrees F. (i didn't have 2% milk, so i used 1- 3/4 cup skim milk with 1/4 cup half and half cream.) • 1/2 cup butter (at room temperature) • 1/2 cup shortening (at room temperature) • 6 eggs (at room temperature) • 2 level tsp. fine salt • 9 cups of unbleached bread flour (our bread flour at Sharyn's Pantry has none to compare! Just ask my customers who bake their bread from scratch or in their bread machines. it is sold only to bakeries and my store! the best!) 4 tbsp. butter melted (used to spread over the rolled out circles of dough after the first rising)

METHOD: • Using a 2 cup pyrex measuring cup, add the yeast to the 1/3 cup of warm water, stir to dissolve and set aside for about 8 minutes. • in a large bowl, add the yeast and water, the warm milk, butter, shortening, eggs. salt and 4 cups of the unbleached bread flour. with an electric mixer, beat this batter for 3 minutes on MediUM until smooth. • now, slowly add in the remaining 5 cups of flour, using a dough scraper and a wooden spoon. once you have a soft dough, turn out the dough on to your floured work surface.

• rinse out the large mixing bowl and dry it well. Smear butter all over it and place the kneaded bread dough into the greased bowl. turn the dough once to coat the surface of the dough. Cover the dough with a sheet of plastic wrap. allow the dough to rise to double in size.this will take about 2 hours. • now, divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. i just eye-balled the dough in the mixing bowl and cut it into 1/4's. • take one piece of dough at a time. Form it into a ball. roll it out on a lightly floured work surface to about 10" or 11" circle. Brush the surface with the melted butter. Cut the circle into 1/4's, then each 1/4 in 1/2 to make 8 equal triangles of dough. • roll up the triangles of dough from the wide end to the tip. this will form a croissant shaped bun. Continue on with the other 3 remaining balls of dough. You will end up with 32 buns. • f you are freezing these buns for another day, place all of the buns on a baking sheet, place the tip end of the bun underneath, so it won't unroll. Freeze them for a few hours. then remove the frozen buns from the tray and bag up in ziploc freezer bags. when you want to bake the frozen rolls, just remove the quantity you need and thaw and rise to double in size. Bake the buns in a 375 degree F. oven 12 to 14 minutes until golden. it will take about 5 hours for the thawing, rising, then baking process. • if you want some for the same day: Place the buns on a parchment lined baking sheet. allow the buns to rise in a warm place until doubled in volume. then bake them in a 375 degree F. oven for about 12 to 14 minutes. enJoY!

thanks to all of you that came in to the shop last Saturday, dollars in hand…wanting to help raise funds for a sweet little 9 month old baby girl… eleanor. Her parents are originally from Cornwall, ann Marie (annie) wheeler and Justin dore. they have many family members and friends that still live right here in our community. this little girl is going through quite the medical ordeal, even has the medical professionals scratching their heads. She is one of only 250 cases living with this condition. She had 85% of a benign tumour (20 cm) removed from her tiny abdomen area only a short while ago and it has since started to grow at an incredibly rapid rate again. She is in CHeo at the moment waiting to stabilize to be moved to toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital, she will most probably be air lifted there. i am hoping to bring some financial support to the parents as expenses add up (gas, food, parking etc…). thanks to all that came forth last week, the response was overwhelming. we raised close to $800 in a very short time and i truly hope to do the same this Saturday. Many great donations from local businesses and individuals have allowed me to create themed draw baskets to be won. with the minimum of $2 for one coupon, you have a chance to win one of these great gifts. So please come to my shop at 812 Pitt Street, unit 40 (same complex as Sharyn’s Pantry and wilson’s Funeral Home) at the back of the p a r k i n g… . t h i s Saturday, July 12th…8am to 4pm and give from the heart. The draws will take place at 3:30pm.

next week, i will make sure to highlight all of the amazing individuals and businesses that gave from the heart to make this fundraiser a huge success in such a short time.. this is for sure a group effort and collectively as a community we have all pulled together once again, to help a family needing our support. i will be also give you the final total of funds raised for this little champion. thanks again!!

The world is changing and I’m on the transition team By: Caitlyn Richer Essential Oil Mentor

For years i suffered medical conditions just like everyone else. right from an early age, i was highly sensitive to anything synthetic. i had recurring throat infections, constant skin irritations, allergies, mouth sores, stomach aches, headaches, daily heartburn and hyper-activity. as a teen i developed debilitating headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome and zero energy. i spent 6 years meeting with specialists who couldn’t give me answers, tried new drugs with no results, and had multiple surgeries. a very special woman came into my life, right when i felt like giving up. She reminded me that we are living in a world full of synthetic products and chemicals. this is when i started to self educate. She motivated me to take control of my health and empowered me to share what i’ve learnt with others. on January 1st 2013, i made a choice that not only would improve my own physical, emotional, spiritual and financial health but i would dedicate myself to a career in which i could empower others who have experienced the same ill health and want guidance. i chose Young living because of their promise to always produce the best quality of essential oils, even if that means a product goes off the market for a while. dr. Gary Young is the worlds most knowledgeable man in essential oil production and Young living is the only company in the world that has the Seed to Seal promise. Gary has spent the last 30 plus years sharing God’s gift with others and transforming lives globally. this June i attended our 20th anniversary international Convention with 9000 others from all over the world. this experience confirms to me that i am part of a global movement towards natUral healing and that there are thousands of lives improved but millions more suffering and waiting for a solution. i am so proud of our 20 year growth and look forward to another 20 year celebration! “Young living is committed to quality and authenticity and tHat is what makes us different. “ Caitlyn richer essential oil Mentor 613-362-9747 https://www.facebook.com/YleoCaitlyn

Mocktails Cornwall is proving that they are "pulling together for a stronger community". one year ago, Cornwall's City Council voted unanimously to support their new business proposal and this local company is providing the citizens of Cornwall with a great place to hang out and spend the beautiful Summer days. Just recently, they began hosting "Mocktails Summer Movie nights" on Sunday evenings with previews at 8:30 and movie beginning at dusk (8:45 p.m.) the movie is Free but there are associated costs for Mocktails to cover regarding license fees that they hope to be able to cover by donations from those in attendance. Mocktails assumes all cost associated with making this possible and has purchased all the equipment necessary to make it a great night. their goal is that every family in Cornwall can enjoy a movie night as a family or with friends. However, we all know that it would cost a small fortune for a family of 4 or more to attend a movie with treats nowadays (especially in my case if we bring all 5 younger children, 3 of which are teenagers!) therefore, it is truly up to you what you want to put into the pot to offset the associated costs. the experience alone is priceless and i'm sure every family can manage even a small donation, however little. For those of you who cannot afford to donate at all, showing your SUPPort for Movie nights can be a simple thank you which goes a long way, even without a donation. a Pre lift-off Movie Party is planned for wednesday, July 9th and more movies are yet to come on Sundays. Epic Quest!!!

When a community pulls together...

On April 11th 2014, AnnMarie Wheeler and her family went to CHEO anticipating a normal ultrasound for their daughter, Eleanor (also known as Epic E). They anticipated a clean bill of health and wanted to get home in time for their older daughter, Ruby’s, 4th birthday party. Unfortunately, the ultrasound was abnormal and little Eleaonor was admitted immediately. The Doré/Wheeler’s world was turned upside down.

After numerous xrays, ultrasounds, an MRI, a CT scan, two needle biopsies and an open biopsy, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists and surgeons from Ottawa, Toronto and Texas diagnosed Eleanor with a mesenchymal hamartoma, a very rare benign tumour that affects only 250 people worldwide.

Eleanor’s first surgery on May 16th removed 85% of the 20cm tumour along with a small part of her liver. It was considered a success. Doctors were not able to remove the whole tumour because Eleanor would not have been left with enough liver to survive, but they were confident that they got enough. After two days in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and four days on the surgical floor, the family was able to finally go back home and begin enjoying life together again.

Eleanor's

However, on June 17th, the parents had to take Eleanor back to CHEO. Her belly seemed to be growing again. After more ultrasounds, xrays and CT scans, doctors found out that the tumour was already back to 13cm. The growth was happening at an alarming rate and doctors decided to send Epic E for evaluation in Toronto. The family was discharged and instructed to await further instructions.

On June 25th, little Eleanor was found having breathing difficulties. Finding themselves once more at the CHEO emergency department, the family was yet again admitted. After an ultrasound and an xray, it was determined that Epic E’s right lung had collapsed! This meant another small operation to insert a chest tube that would drain the fluid accumulating around her lung. After 6 days with the chest tube in, it came out unintentionally, and they were sent back home but are now back at CHEO: her lung collapsed again. The family is currently waiting for their consult at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. This will happen on July 16th. They most likely will be transported from CHEO by helicopter to meet with Canada’s top pediatric surgeon. It will be followed by surgery on July 18th to remove three out of the four lobes of Eleanor’s liver and hopefully rid her body of the tumour. Needless to say that all this traveling and time spent away from work has taken a toll on the parents and this community is pulling together to try and make their life a little easier.

On facebook, people started posting encouraging messages such as “Epic E is my Hero” in to the family’s facebook group.

Business owners, touched by the story, started fundraisers. Sylvie Thibert, “The Health Nut”, collected over $750 at her store last Saturday and many other business owners are also following suit.

“With the love and support, thoughts and prayers and positive vibes from so many wonderful people we have made it this far!”, said AnnMarie, “We appreciate everything that everyone is doing to help out Epic E and our family! Words cannot express how thankful we are to everyone for all their support.”

The Seeker would like to help Epic E by donating 25% of sales made through our website to the family. Go to www.theseeker.ca/newsite/epic_e for details

An online fundraiser is simultaneously taking place and has accumulated over $4,000 to date. You can donate by visiting https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/1oG71/tw/c3ftM0

the U15 Blazers Boys took a page out of a FiFa playbook and trounced their opponents through 4 games and came in 1st in their division in Quebec City on July 5 & 6. every player contributed to the team’s success. Coach denis Fournier and trainer John Baxtrom commented that, “ the boys just keep getting better and faster with every game they play. they play as a team and support each other on and off the field.” in fact, in the regular season, the boys started off with a loss, but haven’t lost a game since. while there are still 10 more games left in the season, the boys have their sights set on a first place finish.

Residents Walked the Bridge on July 8, 2014

THE SEEKER Vol. 5 Issue 27 - July 11- pg. 18

Article & photos by Carol Grant

The Seaway International Bridge Corporation held a Final Bridge Walk on Tuesday, July 8th. The bridge, a staple in the City of Cornwall since it officially opened on July 3rd, 1962, was opened to the public for one last walk across it. Approximately 6,000 people walked across the bridge on Tuesday and many made the trip to Cornwall from outside the city. Young and old alike were seen reminiscing, chatting with old friends, hugging, signing the bridge with chalk and posing for pictures atop this wonderful landmark that has stood as a link between Three Nations for more than 50 years. Many also were seen taking small keepsakes from the bridge such as pieces of asphalt, screws and rusted screws that were found lying here and there.

I met up with a few families and had a chance to hear some stories and share my own stories with a few of the participants. Linda Lauzon (shown here) stopped at the summit of the bridge to pose for a picture beside her chalk inscription "For Sara Lauzon, Cornwall's "Little Historian", We made it to the top! Her daughter could not make it for the walk as she was away at University and so this mother took it upon herself despite her extreme fear of heights to walk to the very top and make sure she did this for her daughter. Another crowd was overhead singing "Oh Canada" as they made their way across. Former General Manager of SIBC Rik Saaltink was also seen with friends & family among the crowd. Shown here are a few families who participated in the walk as well as some of my favourite photos. And lastly, here are some interesting facts, courtesy of SIBC:

• This bridge has 3,000 tons of rebar inside the deck which is the same amount that would be required to build 3 Skydomes. • This bridge is made of 41,000 tons of concrete which is equivalent to the concrete in 3 CN Towers. • To paint this bridge, it took 32,000 gallons of paint which is enough to fill an Olympic size swimming pool. • This bridge contains 5,700 tons of steel girders and rivets. You could build 600 school buses with that amount of steel. • In the past 52 years, more than 78.2 million cars and 3.9 million transports have crossed the bridge • 78% of the bridge is over land! • The North Channel bridge built in 1962 is 1.6KM and cost $8.5 million. The new bridge built in 2014 is only 0.4KM and cost $43 million.
