WORK, RETREAT, REPEAT…
It’s been a well deserved twoweek break.
It is important to wind down and fully recharge your batteries once in a while. Yes, it is somewhat unusual for a newspaper to shut down for summer vacation--after all, the news don’t stop--but we feel that this down time is important for many reasons, health and sanity being two major ones. Being in paper mode is like being caught in a huge whirlwind where the weeks simply overlap one another and can’t be differentiated. The minute an issue is put to rest, we start on the next one. We feel events are taking us where we need to be, without much control on our part. We go with the flow. However, stopping lets us take a step back and observe what is going on around us. It allows us to be more of a spectator and less of a player. It helps us analyze objectively what the next step should be. When you look at things from the sidelines rather than from within, major revelations can sometimes occur. Such revelations happened with the Seeker, hence our two major news.
The first BIG NEWS is that for the first three weeks of September, we will be doing door to door trial runs. If you are in Cornwall, you should be receiving a Complimentary Seeker a least once during that time frame. We will target different areas each week in order to cover the entire city. We also will deliver to strategic pick up locations as far East as Lancaster, North to Moose Creek and West to Cardinal. We will double our production and extend our reach. Isn’t that great? Depending on the results, we may make this a permanent venture, so let us know what you think when you do get it... The second BIG NEWS is that the Seeker is taking on Brockville. We have already launched the online version of the paper and are looking at October for the print version. We already have a good team in place and are looking forward to serving the Brockville Community with their Monthly dose of positive news... All that in two weeks! And now, the loop starts over again. I can hardly wait to see what ideas will sprout out of the next vacation time…

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT •
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
By Heather A. Robertson photos by Jason Setnyk Photography
More Arts in the Park, that’s what! July 30 (I think), Seaway Winds, led by Barb
Hunter performed for the last time this season for Arts in the Park to a small but enthusiastic and appreciative audience. Live entertainment is such a treasure and I enjoyed it even more than I had anticipated.
I am certainly no music expert but I know what I like. Amazing how many pieces I recognized and could hum or sing along with. Music for all ages. Barb Hunter advised us that we were in for a treat…a preview of their upcoming October concert. Must go. See how many of these you recognize:
-When the Saints Go Marching In ( we clapped and stomped to that, but stomping on grass isn’t very effective)
-The Colonel Bogie March (how well some folks whistled to that one)
-Some marches from Mozart (accompanied by a triangle…you know, 3 sides, equilateral, silver, goes Ting, Ting, Ting). I think this is where we also had “auxiliary percussion” with audience participation on different instruments.
-Some Henri Mancini works: Moon River (haunting) then one of my favourites, The Baby Elephant Walk. Tail, trunk, tail, trunk, etc.
-Several pieces from 50 years of Disney: Lion King, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins,( you should have heard us proudly singing “ Superfragilistickexpialidocious “ as though we did it every day, twice! ) Zippiddee Do Dah!
-Themes from several movies: Zorro, Titanic, Raiders of the Lost Arc, Mission Impossible, Star Wars, and some I forgot.
My favourite, close behind those Baby Elephants was Neil Diamond’s Song Sung Blue. We sang and swayed and became downright mellow. Even got a little education on that Diamond fellow: did you know he went to university on a fencing scholarship??!! Imagine earning your tuition painting a …never mind.
Watch for this group and their October concert. You won’t want to miss it.
August 6, the parking lot was full, lots of families in the park, folks hunkered down with blankets, munchies, bikes, cameras, all ready to cheer on the entertainers. The performers are students of Studio C, a Cornwall dance studio, owned and operated by Candy Pollard and assisted by her daughter Alanna Pollard.
They have been providing this wonderful entertainment for 23 years and their students have been winning awards recently at competitions.
The air was electrified with excitement! Delightful costumes, talented dancers, great music and the performers and audience were all loving it! My favourite was probably the group of youngsters ( foxes, I believe) in satiny short jumpsuits with luxurious tails attached to their little derrieres. Wiggle,Wiggle, Wiggle.
The more advanced students danced with beach balls and other props and were awesome. Great choreography and attention to detail. Very entertaining. Cameras and cel phones were working overtime and everyone left the bandshell smiling and proud. Lots of hugs! The second group of performers that Wednesday evening were The Flowdroidz (two of the singers are pictured to the right) along with the BCDC dancers. So up-beat and talented with music all the young folks recognized and sang along with. Their music was like a big party, energetic and happy (“Happy” was one of
my favourite songs.) The dancers were like a great show, thrilling then gone too soon! I would definitely go to see this group again. It was a terrific night of local entertainment.

Marie has seen many clients who have waited to hire her because they are too embarrassed or ashamed or simply feel they do not have time. You must understand this is what organizers do for a living, meaning help people declutter. Organizers are honoured when clients in this situation hire them, because they know the difficult decision these clients have made to reclaim their life and space. Organizers greatly respect their clients for this important step forward and never come into someone’s home, or business, with judgment. They come with a clear vision of what it will look like when the task is completed. Organized sometimes means: • letting go of items with sentimental value when downsizing, • staging your home for a sale, • organizing your business for working more efficiently(business transformation), which will save you money, and • organizing any room in you home and much more. All organizers must have a policy in respect with confidentiality. All information seen, heard or discussed, as well as, all business transactions and personal information acquired will be held in the strictest confidence.
Book an appointment with Marie now and she will pay the HST until October 1st. For additional information call 613-936-6873, send an e-mail: office @workeasysolution.com or visit www.workeasysolution.com

INGREDIENTS: (We carry all the dry ingredients needed at my store Sharyn's Pantry.) 8 large fresh juicy ripe peaches, peeled and sliced 1- 1/2 cups fresh raspberries 1- 1/4 cups blueberries ( I used frozen wild blueberries. I just placed them in a colander, ran hot water over them to thaw them, then I drained them well and patted them dry with a piece of paper towelling.) 4 tbsp. white sugar 3 heaping tsp. of minute tapioca 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. ascorbic acid (This stops the fruit, namely the peaches, from darkening- especially good if you plan to freeze one of the crisps.)
6:00 PM ² 8:00PM
FOOD
I made 2 fruit crisps with this recipe. You can eat both or freeze one. The topping can be used for any crisp. I just love using oat flour instead of all-purpose flour for the topping in any fruit crisp. It has a much nicer flavour, sort of nutty and oatty. We carry the oat flour at my store, Sharyn's Pantry.

METHOD: -Rinse off the chicken pieces. Remove the skin or buy skinless chicken breasts or thighs. -Right in the roasting pan, combine the can of Campbell's Golden Mushroom Soup with the empty soup can filled with white wine of your choice. Use a whisk to mix the soup and wine thoroughly with no lumps. -Place the chicken pieces in the sauce . Turn to coat. -Place the lid on your roasting pan. Cook in a 350 degree F. oven for 1 to 11/2 hours. Turn the chicken pieces over part way. Spoon the sauce over the chicken a few times. Cook until the chicken is very tender when pierced with a fork. In the last 5 minutes, remove the lid and allow the chicken to brown slightly.
-Peel and slice the peaches right into the pie plates. -Add the raspberries and blueberries. -Sprinkle the sugar, minute tapioca and cinnamon and nutmeg over the fruit. Stir gently. -Prepare the topping. Combine the oat flour and brown sugar in a bowl. Using a pastry blender, cut in the butter until it resembles a very coarse crumb. Stir in the rolled oats. -Sprinkle handfuls of the topping over the fruit in the 2 pie plates to completely cover the fruit. Press down slightly. -Bake the crisps in a 350 degree F. oven for about 35 to 40 minutes. Bake them until the fruit is bubbling and the topping has browned nicely. These are just YUMMY! ENJOY!!!
FOOD
INGREDIENTS: 6 chicken thighs or breasts, skin removed (You will have enough sauce in the roasting pan to easily cover 2 or three pounds of chicken.) 1 - 10 oz. can of Campbell's Golden Mushroom Soup fill the empty soup can with white wine e.g. Chardonnay, Reisling, Chablis
METHOD: NOTE: YOU CAN USE THIS TOPPING OVER A FRUIT PIE WITH A BOTTOM PASTRY CRUST. I DO THIS FOR A FRESH RASPBERRY PIE WITH AMAZING RESULTS.
•
This recipe is so easy and uses only 3 ingredients. You must use Campbell's Golden Mushroom Soup for proper flavour and results. You can use chicken breasts or thighs. Remove the skin from the chicken before cooking. Any white wine will do. Just use a wine you like to drink.
1 cup of butter 3/4 cup of quick-cooking rolled oats

I made this tasty oven-meal this past Sunday. Anyone using Ontario Hydro can appreciate this thought. When my oven is on, I try to cook as many things as possible at the same time to save $$$$. This past Sunday I made my sister-in-law Kathy's Chicken Recipe and baked a bunch of potatoes to have for more than one meal and then I also made two lovely fruit crisps. The crisps were a mixture of fresh peaches, raspberries from my garden and frozen wild blueberries. It was a delicious supper and I had enough leftovers to feed us Monday evening as well. I just added more vegetables. I hope you try these recipes, I know you will love them too!

WHAT’S UP? A hundred wet, pruney thumbs, that’s what! Kudos and gratitude to the local Tim Horton’s group who have sponsored the Friday “Tim Swims” so many Friday afternoons this summer at the Aquatic Centre. There is no charge for the 90 minute swim sessions.
There were close to 200 swimmers already there on one of the several occasions I participated. The staff are pleasant, helpful, and attentive, with lifeguards switching positions every few minutes. Divers, sliders, waders, watchers, lappers, swimmers, SPLASHERS. We all had a grand time and the hour and a half is always over too soon. Keeping my pruney fingers crossed that you will carry on next year as well, Tim Horton’s. It truly is appreciated.

Have you met the Taco Man?
Shortly after Tampicos had opened in Cornwall, my wife and I tried their food and were very happy. Ecstatic. We've been eating their food religiously ever since. This far from Mexico, finding exceptional Mexican food is not easy. I know. I'm from Texas, where delicious Mexican food is everywhere. But here, before discovering Tampicos, trying to find cuisine like this was like trying to find poutine in Texas. It is extremely unlikely that you will find poutine in Texas, let alone delicious poutine, the kind you savour. I'm just putting that out there to help convey how fortunate Cornwall is to be home to Tampicos. So, a few weeks ago, at the onset of Tampicos' First Year Anniversary, I met with chef/owner, Ivan Contreras for an interview over his first year's success.
He's delighted with his success! All has been going very well. From Tampico Mexico, the "Taco Man", as his customers call him, has been a resident of Canada for 6 years. Ivan, who has a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, saw instead an opportunity here for authentic homemade Mexican food. "Canadians travel to Mexico and have experienced authentic Mexican food" he said, illustrating for me the opportunity he'd eagerly embraced to put on his plate.

Against all odds, he quit his job at SCM (Walmart's warehouse) to launch Tampicos. The "Taco Man" followed his dreams, and exudes the passion for it. As Dylan Jones would say: “Recipes don’t work unless you use your heart!"
His heart & soul is probably the secret ingredient to his success, I would say. But importing ingredients straight from Mexico makes it all possible, he informed me. Ahhhhh! Like the salsa de guajillo in his chicken and steak enchilladas--it comes from Mexico! Mmmmnnnn.... The ingredients are impeccably fresh, the cuisine made to order, and the prices are more than reasonable. Deliciously decadent, every meal is fresh and homemade. Even the flour tortillas are homemade! Service is very friendly, accommodating, polite and efficient.Tampicos is mainly for Take-out Delivery and/or Pick-up, but there is some seating usually available.
This past Tuesday, Ivan's wife gave birth to a baby girl. Daddy of 2 girls and 2 boys, family man, successful restaurateur, the "Taco Man" has goals, and the vision to add more Tampicos locations to the city of Cornwall. Wow! Tampicos is located at 1404 Pitt Street, Cornwall. Call 613-870-2202 to order.

Part 1 of 4 Part of being organized is knowing what to do when two people move in the same space. It can be a roommate status or moving in with your soul mate. In any case, it means blending two households and there are golden rules to be applied. ROOMMATES 1. Box up and store duplicate things. 2. Write a simple but precise signed agreement covering financial responsibility for: • the rent or mortgage, • utilities, • insurance, and • other monthly expenses. 3. • •
Include: what happens if one party becomes unable to provide his or her share, and the conditions under which the agreement can be dissolved.
Make a schedule for kitchen and bathroom cleanups; take turns.
6. As per your agreement, organize cupboards and drawers, refrigerator and freezer and label your own things. 7. • • • • • • • • • •
Have a frank discussion about: house keys, cleanliness, music, children, pets, smoking, alcohol, drugs, overnight guests (including lovers and relatives), and any other area of potential friction.
8.
Agree on ground rules and stick to them.
9. Come to a signed agreement and make compromises when decorating common areas e.g., decorate one room and the other person gets to decorate another.

After a summer pause, The Cornwall Scrabble Club, which is a Recreational Club registered with NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association), will be resuming play at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4th, at the Cornwall Public Library. This fifth year promises the same recreational, lightly competitive level as it has in the past. New members and members of all levels are welcome; however, they are encouraged to attend a one-on-one introductory session with Club Director, Vivianne Panizzon so as to familiarize themselves with the same “fine points” of the game that all members follow in various NASPA associated clubs throughout North America. Getting from good to great on the Scrabble board is only a matter of time and practice; no matter what your beginning
concentration and memory with minimal investment!
Keeping your brain sharp and functioning optimally are even more important as you age; without enough stimulation and activity, the human brain can degenerate rapidly and become less inclined to learning and assimilating new information. In addition to these benefits, the game is a great social outlet for people who club together to play Scrabble. A lot of friendships have been forged by people who have met while playing Scrabble at the Cornwall Scrabble Club.
All this to say, that you are invited to join the Cornwall Scrabble Club. Just communicate with Club Director, Vivianne Panizzon. 613-931-1792 vpanizzon@cogeco.ca

with Craig Revelle A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands
As hard as it is for many people, racing continued on despite the tragic circumstances. My own plans for this past weekend were to take in the action at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, Brockville Speedway on Saturday night and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday. Mohawk International Raceway is a track that I have always enjoyed going to. The racing is always very entertaining in both the Modified and Sportsman divisions. This past week was no exception. Carey Terrance won the Modified main event, dedicating the win to a crew member that lost his life just a couple days earlier. Brian McDonald finished second, Billy Dunn was third followed by Lance Willix and Gage Morin. The Sportsman division was won by Ricky Thompson, earning his first career win after a dominating performance. Bryan Green finished second, Corey Wheeler was third followed by Dylan Evoy and Mike Maresca. Other winners on the night included Stephane Lebrun in Pro Stocks, Jesse Hudson in Mod Lites and Matt Zira in the Bandits.
This coming weekend will feature the Mohawk International Raceway “NO EXCUSES” event for the Modifieds as well as a Frenchie’s Sportsman Series race plus Bandits. On Saturday night at Brockville Speedway, the Patriot Sprints make their final visit of the season. It will also be Hall of Fame night at the BOS as they induct three new members. Cornwall Speedway will be the final stop on the weekend schedule as the Patriot Sprints visit Cornwall along with a 35 lap Sportsman Summer Championship event and full show for Semi Pro and Pro Stocks as well as the Vintage Modifieds and the SpeedSTRs. As always, any comments or suggestions can be sent to crevelle@ripnet.com. You can also visit me online at www.finishlinewebdesign.ca, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/crevelle, and on twitter at www.twitter.com/finishlineweb17.
Ontario SPCA SD&G Branch invites you to find your new companion by participating in “ iAdopt for Fall”
Cornwall, ON (August 1st, 2014) - The Ontario SPCA SD&G Branch invites you to drop in to the Branch to take part in their exciting new adoption campaign “iAdopt for Fall.”
iAdopt for Fall will run from August 1st to September 30th at Ontario SPCA Branches across the province with a goal of getting as many animals as possible placed into loving forever homes during the Fall season. The SD&G Branch encourages you to take the Meet Your Match™ adopter survey before coming into the shelter. The survey will give you a color based on your preferences and lifestyle. On your visit to the Ontario SPCA SD&G Branch, you’re given a purple, orange or green guest pass to match the pets who might suit you best. You don’t always have to go with your own color, but at least you’ll know who you’re mixing with!
Brockville Speedway was up next on my weekend schedule, but for the second time this season, Mother Nature stepped in and left the track with no other choice but to cancel their program.
“The Fall is a great time to bring a new companion and forever friend into your home,” says Carol Link. “Visit the SD&G Branch to take part in iAdopt for Fall!”
On Sunday night, Cornwall Speedway staff worked diligently to get the track back into shape after the rain finally ended overnight on Saturday night. Much the same as Friday night at Mohawk, Carey Terrance and Ricky Thompson were the big winners. Terrance took the lead with a very impressive move on the last corner of the last lap, finishing ahead of Laurent Ladouceur, Kyle Dingwall, Chris Raabe and Joel Doiron. Thompson was his second career feature and completed the sweep in the Sportsman division, finishing ahead of Corey Wheeler, Joey

COMMUNITY & LIFESTYLE
The last week was tough on everyone in the racing community. From NASCAR to the local weekend short track, the talk of conversation was the Kevin Ward Jr./Tony Stewart incident and the tragic death of the 20 year old driver. It was great to see so many from our tight-knit racing community get together to honor Ward and his family last weekend, including a heart-felt tribute as the Empire Super Sprints returned to the track at Brewerton Speedway last Friday night. Canandaigua Motorsports Park also held a great tribute to Ward on Saturday night.

It#is obvious that with all of the new and enhanced technology '1" surrounding us, it means that we are working in a new, more +* -.*5 & flexible, more knowledge-focused workplace. The fact that most of us will live longer lives also ensures that we should reasonably expect to be able to continue making meaningful contribution, 6 through6.7 paid and unpaid work, well beyond traditional 0 retirement age. When you evaluate these two statements I can’t 8 help but think that experienced employees who have kept up with technology changes will continue to be comfortable in productive & fulfilling employment or in second and third careers. 9 It is becoming quite clear to employers that workers over 55 are in many cases quite technology savvy. Some employees in their 50s, 60s and 70s for instance use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Many 20-year-old employees do not have workforce essential skills coming8 out of school and don’t 8 know how to use the :; < tools in ways that are appropriate for business but, older employees have those skills # : = & ; & as well as experience that are important to businesses. It's so great to be back from a small hiatus! I have been extremely busy in the past two weeks and am happy to report that I am now the District Sales Manager for Avon Canada! If any Avon Representatives read my weekly column, please reach out to say hi and introduce yourself to me! So just because The Seeker was on holidays, doesn't mean the City of Cornwall has been! There have been so many events in the past two weeks! I hope you have been able to take part in many of them despite the sometimes inclimate weather we have been experiencing.
The Centennial Choir of Cornwall is welcoming potential new members to their Fall rehearsals. I was a member of The Centennial Choir for a few years and very much enjoyed being a part of this great group and have become friends with many of the members. I will always remember the annual Spring and Christmas concerts they put on every year and being a part of those was such a wonderful opportunity. Experience and enjoyment singing in other choirs are the best criteria and all sections are available (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). The ability to read music would be a valuable asset with an informal audition held after a few weeks to determine voice placement. The group meets every Monday night and the first choir practice will be held at 6:45 on Monday, Sept. 8th at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 28 Second St., Cornwall.
The annual MS Society's Crusin' For A Cause was held at A&W restaurants here in the city on T h u r s d a y August 21st. Proceeds went towards The MS Society with $1.00 from each Teen Burger sold that day donated to the cause. I know several people afflicted with MS and it was great to see so many of the great people here in Cornwall supporting this very worthy organization. Thank you to all of the organizers that I did not get to see, to some of the behind-the-scenes helpers that I saw while I was there including Karen Torrie-Racine and Guy St-Jean and also to all those who came out to support it.

Funding your grandchildren's education One of the best gifts a grandparent can give a grandchild is helping to pay for a university or college education. If you're a grandparent considering helping out with education expenses, make sure you choose the right vehicle for your contribution. This will help the money you put toward education grow faster, as well as minimize taxation. Contributing to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your grandchild is the best approach. But depending on the circumstances, there may be other options worth exploring.
When it comes to an RESP, a grandparent can open up a plan with the child as a beneficiary. However, because the parents may already have an RESP for their child, it may make more sense to contribute to an existing plan. If parents don't make full contributions each year, there is an opportunity for grandparents to make up the difference. Not only will this help maximize the level of annual contributions, it will ensure the RESP is eligible for the maximum Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) of up to $500 a year. A grandparent can gift money to the child's parents, who can then make the contribution on their behalf. And doing it this way can eliminate the confusion that having more than one RESP for a child can create. If grandparents do open a separate RESP for a child, they need to exercise caution. If parents and grandparents have plans, total contributions need to be carefully monitored to ensure the allowed maximums are not exceeded. Another concern for grandparents opening an RESP is the possibility that the child will not further his or her education. Under certain circumstances the growth of the funds in the RESP can be transferred back to the contributor's Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) if a child doesn't go to college or university. But a grandparent may be beyond RRSP age, and funds cannot be transferred to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). This means returned amounts could be heavily taxed.
M r H ’ H e lp fu l H o u s e h o ld H in ttss
Grandparents can also open a family RESP, through which they can name their grandchildren as beneficiaries. If one or more children choose not to attend a postsecondary institution, other grandchildren can use the money, up to certain maximums. If there is no available contribution room in a child's RESP, grandparents may want to consider an in-trust account. This is a type of informal trust set up to allow an adult to manage funds on behalf of a child. When the child reaches the age of majority, he or she takes control of the funds in the trust.
Welcome to a brand new segment of the Seeker, where you can ask about anything and ever ything you wonder about. Wonder how to get rid of fruit flies? Can’t figure out how to get rid of blood stains on clothes? Cr y no more! Mr H will give you all the answers in this new nifty column. Have a question? Send it to MrH@theseeker.ca
An in-trust account, which can be set up at a financial institution, is a good way to contribute amounts beyond those allowed by an RESP. There are no contribution limits, although unlike an RESP there is no tax deferral. However, if set up correctly, taxes can be managed by having capital gains taxed in the hands of a child-whose tax liabilities will be non-existent or small.
Q
There are some potential disadvantages. The donor is taxed on interest and dividends earned in the plan. Once the child has control of the money it can be used for any purpose-not just education. And an in-trust account does not qualify for the CESG.
Dear Mr H, Every time I come back from vacation, I find that there is a peculiar smell in my house. Is there any way to avoid this?
A
One of the main reason a house smells when vacant for a while is the kitchen drain. Not running water for a long period of time in these other wise ver y active pipes can cause odors.
