It’s that time again - leading up to the elections ... THE FIVE QUESTIONS SECTION Here are Five Questions with 2014 Cornwall Ontario City Council candidate MARK A MACDONALD

The city seems to bend over backwards to help big business and they should do the same for the arts community. For some unknown reason they are neglecting to help the Port Theatre and yes, I am very supportive of an Arts and Culture Centre in Cornwall.

Article and photo by Jason Setnyk.

4 – Do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? If you do not support freezing or lowering taxes explain why.

1 – Tell the voters a bit about yourself. What skills and experience would make you a good candidate for Council? I was born and raised in Cornwall and I am a retired Fire Inspector from the City of Cornwall Fire Department. I’m a community activist and if I fight for what I believe in. 2 – In what ways could we improve Economic Development and how can we make Cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses? We can improve our Economic Development by promoting a more regional approach to doing business. There is a tremendous amount of overlap between us and the Counties. We could save money by combining services with the region and we could use the savings to help small businesses. 3 – What is your vision for arts and culture? Would you support the building of an Arts and Culture Centre in Cornwall?

Five Questions with 2014 Cornwall Ontario City Council candidate JUSTIN TOWNDALE Article by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo. 1 – Tell the voters a bit about yourself. What skills and experience would make you a good candidate for Council? I’m 31, was raised in Cornwall, and attended the University of Toronto, graduating with an Honours Bachelor’s of Arts. I’m involved with the 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo, the Agapè Centre’s ‘Within These Walls’ campaign, and the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals. I spent five years working at Queen’s Park, getting to know the ins and outs of politics at the provincial level. I learned who to go to for specific requests and how to get things done. Living in Toronto for twelve years, accompanied with my work, exposed me to new concepts. I can bring fresh new ideas, and forward thinking.

I support lowering taxes. The “New Council” must set an example by cutting 20% from their own budgets. It should start by agreeing to reduce the number of Councillors from 10 to 8. We do not need 10 Councillors, especially considering the amount of money the “New Council” will be making. 5 – What has been the biggest accomplishment at City Hall over the past four years OR what has been the biggest issue of concern at City Hall over the past four years? The city has suffered some huge setbacks such as the chemical tanks on our waterfront and the sale of the General Hospital, it has been a disastrous 4 years. The biggest problem was that this Council was not a strong team and the “New Council” will have lots of work to do just to make up the time we lost.

3 – What is your vision for arts and culture? Would you support the building of an Arts and Culture Centre in Cornwall? I am a fan of the arts. I enjoyed attending Worldfest with my parents when I was younger. I absolutely support the building of an Arts and Culture Centre in Cornwall. While Aultsville Hall is an excellent facility, we would benefit greatly from having a stand alone Arts and Culture Centre. Having such a centre would also attract visitors to the area of the city in which it is located, which would have a positive economic impact in that neighborhood. I think we should find a suitable location in, or around, Le Village. 4 – Do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? If you do not support freezing or lowering taxes explain why.

2 – In what ways could we improve Economic Development and how can we make Cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses?

At this time, I do not support a tax increase. If we continue to push for growth and development across the city, tax revenues will increase without actually raising taxes. New businesses create thousands in tax revenue for the city. We need to encourage and support new businesses and developments. The recent decision by City Council to halt the development of the residential complex on the former Courtaulds lands has now cost the city tens of thousands in future tax revenue. We cannot risk making a mistake like this again.

We need to actively pursue companies to set up operations in Cornwall. We also need to partner closely with the provincial and federal levels of government to promote Cornwall as they attract new companies to Ontario.

5 – What has been the biggest accomplishment at City Hall over the past four years OR what has been the biggest issue of concern at City Hall over the past four years?

For small businesses, its all about giving local entrepreneurs the tools that they need to succeed. We need to ensure that they have financial assistance available for expansions, and other projects. We need to ensure that the city supports them, and factors in local companies when accepting tenders. While the lowest price is always attractive, sourcing services locally would improve the overall economy of the city. We also need to ensure that small business owners aren’t overburdened with red tape, which can affect productivity, and profit. Finally, we must ensure that our tax rates are fair and reasonable.

The city has been extremely successful as of late in attracting new businesses and industries to the area. We need to continue this success.

“CHANGE,

At the same time however, the city needs improvement in the areas of accountability and transparency, especially at the council table. This is why I am calling for the posting of City Council expenses online as a first step. City Council is elected by the people to serve the people. It must act as the leaders of the community, and set the example. The people should know how City Council is spending tax dollars at all times.

www.carilynehebert.ca w ww.carilynehebert.ca Five Questions with 2014 Cornwall Ontario City Council candidate GUY ST-JEAN Article by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo. 1 – Tell the voters a bit about yourself. What skills and experience would make you a good candidate for Council? I was born in Cornwall’s east end in 1971 and grew up on Leitch Drive. My dad, Aurèle St-Jean, was founder of the still well-known Plumbing Company, which carries his name to this day. I am well educated and well travelled. I am a very creative person! I established my own business, Neo Vintage Furniture Inc., in the Cornwall area because I believe Cornwall is the perfect place for any business hoping to expand to neighboring cities such as Montreal, Ottawa, and Brockville. I am extremely passionate and confident that my many years of business, pedagogical and creative experience will prove to be just what this city needs. 2 – In what ways could we improve Economic Development and how can we make Cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses? I think that technology will be important to improve Economic Development. We need to invest in more tech infrastructures. We need to show the world, that Cornwall can be innovative as a city and we need to have incentives to attract young emerging companies and businesses. We also need to have programs that aggressive recruit companies that will provide good jobs for our citizens. Finally, we need to have the arts and culture community work more closely with Economic Development. Making Cornwall a friendlier city for small businesses is vital if we are to promote growth and sustainability. If we want to attract entrepreneurs and small businesses to invest and choose Cornwall, then we need to support them. As people choose Cornwall to make their home, we need to give that family or business the same support and respect as the person who was born and raised

here. We must change our perception and welcome diversity. I have been speaking with incumbents and candidates from South Stormont, North Dundas and South Glengarry and we all agree that we must work together and break down our borders. 3 – What is your vision for arts and culture? Would you support the building of an Arts and Culture Centre in Cornwall? I think that the new vision for arts and culture is on the right track. I believe that YAC (Yours Arts Council) will continue to grow and become the hub for all of our local artists. I do support an Arts and Culture Centre and would support an initiative to purchase an existing building such as the Aultsville Theatre as it offers most everything needed to develop a Cornwall Arts Center. 4 – Do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? If you do not support freezing or lowering taxes explain why. Freezing or lowering taxes isn’t part of my platform. I believe in cutting unnecessary spending and being more transparent when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. I will not make a promise that I know I will not be able to keep within the next 4 years. Cutting taxes is an ineffective way to stimulate the economy in the short term with costly long-term consequences. 5 – What has been the biggest accomplishment at City Hall over the past four years OR what has been the biggest issue of concern at City Hall over the past four years? By far, the biggest issue of concern at City Hall over the last four years has been the lack of accountability and transparency. We witnessed this first hand with the way things were dealt with regarding the harbour tanks. In addition, on several occasions, present councillors have shown their anger and discontent with lack of access to information when making important decisions. It all begins with communication and I see many needed improvements within our municipal government and administration.

Here are Five Questions with 2014 Cornwall Ontario City Council candidate ROLAND BESNER Article by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo. 1 – Tell the voters a bit about yourself. What skills and experience would make you a good candidate for Council? I was born and raised in Cornwall. I am married, and I am bilingual. I have the time, knowledge and experience to help bring us to a new level. I would like to share my experience earned in Management Accounting positions, in matters such as Financial Statements, Budgeting and my proven years in business, operating a successful wholesale distribution network throughout the three United Counties. My involvement over the years in many charitable organizations has granted me capabilities to have foresight and insight to fast track possibilities. 2 – In what ways could we improve Economic Development and how can we make Cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses? Economic development, is not only about finding jobs. It really is about recognizing your resources and using them to develop our city into being a positive, progressive, vibrant and profitable community for all. We all have ideas but the most important are to be able to recognize these resources and to capitalize on them with suggestions that will come to fruition profitably, and be of benefit to the business community all while creating revenues from tourism. I would love to see Cornwall as the envy of Eastern Ontario for recreation and sports. Now for small business - I have been told that Cornwall seems to be anti small business with its rules and regulations. With my business experience I would be willing to participate in a group to iron out any problems and perhaps eliminate or at least clarify the rules and regulations.

Here are Five Questions with 2014 Cornwall Ontario City Council candidate ALYSSA BLAIS Article by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo.

3 – What is your vision for arts and culture? Would you support the building of an Arts and Culture Centre in Cornwall? This encompasses music, visual arts, stage and film. I don’t know all the facts, but I do know that we have Aultsville Hall a facility currently leased by the city being used and managed by a group of dedicated volunteers. Perhaps, Aultsville Hall would consider sharing its facility with the arts council and this would benefit both financially. 4 – Do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? If you do not support freezing or lowering taxes explain why. As much as I am in favor, I cannot promise freezing or lowering taxes. I need to be elected and sitting on Council to see what this current sitting council has left behind for the new members to deal with in the way of unnecessary spending and waste. I can promise the citizens that with my accounting and business successes I will work diligently to recognize possible troubled areas cut them out and possibly use these savings towards tax levels. 5 – What has been the biggest accomplishment at City Hall over the past four years OR what has been the biggest issue of concern at City Hall over the past four years? The biggest accomplishment is one not to be very proud of. The integrity Commissioner has been called in on several occasions either because of items that went on at meetings behind closed, and the motion at the public waterfront committee meeting to illegally go into a closed session, whereby spectators were ask to leave the meeting. And, let us not forget we have the tanks issue on the waterfront, the whistleblowers cases, the questionable payoffs and the extreme extravagant pay raise I was so vocal against. I believe that the current Council have truly failed in accomplishing is transparency, integrity and accountability.

in Cornwall? My vision for arts and culture is one where our arts community is instrumental in creating an economically and socially vibrant city. Cornwall needs to look at specific public art policies through which the City allocates one percent of development project budgets to public art as well as developing municipal policies on culture to describe its’ role in its development. Cornwall does need an identifiable public place to become the hub for arts and culture in our community. This place would act as a centre for training, production and experience of all cultural activities. Whether it’s a new build or a retrofit of an existing facility needs careful analysis.

Article by Julia Lucio, Photos by Mai-Liis Renaud Cornwall, Ontario – It was nice to see a good crowd show up at the Library’s candidate meet and greet held on Monday September 29. Despite the fact that the library had selected 10 different questions to ask individuals running for council, it was made clear early on that candidates were there to mainly promote their platform and push their agendas. Some, such as Alyssa Blais, Maurice Dupelle and Bernadette Clement clearly had prepared and attempted to answer questions directly. Others spent no more than 10 seconds on topic. Not many answered the question they were asked, one even politely declined to answer their given question because they preferred to answer someone else’s. Even though politicians were being, well, politicians, the evening turned out to be very informative and led the public to know more about each individual asking for their vote. Each candidate had 3 minutes to talk. Newcomers Carilyne Hebert, Claude McIntosh and Greg Kielec certainly stood out and seemed to be well liked by the crowd. But there was a clear disconnect between the speech of veteran city councilors and that of those seeking a seat on council for the first time. The mayoral candidates had 5 minutes each to answer their given question. Jamie Gilcig led the way and was the only one who seemed to be disenchanted with the progress of Arts and Culture in our community over the last term. Kilger simply said he was proud of what was accomplished, O’Shaughnessy sort of echoed the sentiment stating that everyone should go home knowing that things are being done and will continue to be done.

Here are some quotes from the evening: Mark A. MacDonald “It starts with the money. If you are not prepared as a candidate to tackle the big ticket items, I’m talking police, fire, paramedic and yes, the 40% raise… The library asks for 2% and they get nickle and dime.” Syd Gardiner ” We have to start putting arts in our strategic planning” Carilyne Hebert ” I owe a lot of what and who I am today to arts and culture. it taught me the importance of team work, confidence, creativity, individuality, problem solving and hard work.” Heather Megill “Libraries and other centers of culture are the soul of any community” Dave Murphy “Arts and Culture play an important role in making the community more attractive to various age groups including families (young and old) and small businesses. Just as previous Councils focused on the much needed recreation facilities we now enjoy and showcase to other communities, this next Council should build on the process that has already started with the end result being an Arts and Culture Centre.” Gerald Samson “I do believe that council should support the art, I do believe in a new art center… It develop strong minds, it focuses youth. Maurice Dupelle ” I have been engaged over the past 4 years as your councillor and not only at election time” Roland Besner ” We need transparency and accountability” Elaine MacDonald “I am absolutely committed to the arts. If arts flourish, Cornwall will flourish” Claude McIntosh “I will work so that each dollar spent is accounted for” Denis Sabourin ” I want to use my experience to help make things happen on your behalf” André Rivette “It is important that we take ACTION” Glen Grant ” Our community is moving forward. These are exciting times. Our track record will show that we’ve been extremely supportive” Greg Kielec “I have never been a politician, I’m not a member of any political party, but I don’t need to be a politician to know that the current council has lost its way. My faith has been shattered” Pat Clarke ” I would fully support an Art Centre in the Aultsville Theater or Renaissance Harbour.” Davey Bedard “I belive in economic development, developing our waterfront, concentrate on the positive, focus on the future instead of the past” Mike O’Neil “I’m not afraid of hard work, I do my homework, I come prepared. We need to grow our tax base, but also diversify” Bernadette Clement “Arts help us better understand one another. Cornwall is in transition, we are redefining ourselves, we express who we art through art and culture. People will want to move here if we have a strong arts community. We need to make this more than words. Guy St-Jean “I know that arts are important and need to be at the forefront of the community. We need to revitalize, we need to clean up this city.” Rony Macarone “When the Boomers are gone, we will turn to the Millennials and if we don’t bring out arts and culture, we will lose the Millennials. They will stay if they feel they can get everything they need close by.” Mary Ann Hug “I don’t have an agenda that limits me to one ideology. I belong to one group: Cornwall” Gary Samler ” We need to do better. Arts & culture increases tourism, brings in new businesses, gives outsiders a better image of our city.” Alyssa Blais “Our city has great potential and we need a group of people who are willing to work together to move it forward.” Todd Bennett “An art center is clearly something the community wants.” Denis Carr “This is what we need, this is where we want to be… Stop talking, start acting” AS FOR THE MAYORAL CANDIDATES: Jamie Gilcig “You can’t live your life on Xanax… You have to admit there is a problem, look in the mirror and move forward.” Bob Kilger “The time is getting nearer and I want to be part of the next step.” Leslie O’Shaughnessy “Any project that comes from the community up will work. Politicians down, well… It took 8 years to get the Benson Centre… Things are being done and will continue to be done.”

Library debate brings arts and culture to the forefront

Hi there to all of you beautiful and intelligent people reading the ~Seeker~ this week. Well, Mother Nature has been ever so kind to us this Autumn. She has given us some of the "summer-like weather" back for us to enjoy before the cold Northern winds start blowing in to whip the leaves and branches off of the trees. John and I have enjoyed many hours out and about kayaking and witnessing the "Changing of the Leaves." We certainly are liking the nice, warm sunshine on our faces these days. Be sure to get yourselves out to take in the rainbowic colours of this year's Fall Fashion Show. Please bring along a friend or a family member that way you both will enjoy it together.

Sadly the last of the ~Sauve Tiki Lounge Parties~ for 2014 was held a couple of Saturdays ago. There was another record crowd who showed up throughout the evening to have some drinks, to listen and dance to some Great Tunes and to chit and chat of this and that. It was time to say, "Farewell" until next year's Tiki festivities. Thank you so much Todd & Josee for having John & I, and the rest of the fabulous people who attended over the many months this year. We really had a wonderful time with you both and had the pleasure of meeting new people. John and I look forward to joining you and everyone else next year... Tiki On Bro's & Sisters. TIP OF THE WEEK: START WALKING...Walking can improve your "Heart Health" by increasing your heart rate and circulation. It boosts your endorphins and it limits sickness. Walking can and will improve your blood pressure and even your balance. It strengthens your legs, arms and shoulder muscles as well. Walking burns more fat than jogging does and builds more bone mass. Walking is even good for your eyes as it reduces glaucoma risk. with The Health Nut So many positive things have happened in my personal life this last week, helping me really put things into perspective. I now feel that I have found that positive spark and focus again to help keep me on the right track. It is amazing how things happen for a reason, just when I needed all of this in my life ...Key people and events have been placed on my life path...feeling blessed!! Even though I realize that I am going through normal life changes....Kathy Smart`s brilliant and informative workshop “Ignite your metabolism” in Ottawa last Saturday could not have had better timing for me. “Scales are for fish” is a statement that I will always remember. Sure checking in with a scale once in a while is ok...but it does not define us as a person. We have become obssessed with numbers instead of trying to figure out what is really going on inside of us.I have learned that my body type and blood type are both very important tools and most crucial pieces of information that can help me live my best life ever!!

Michelle Gauthier (Natural Balance Fitness) of Cornwall, is one amazing lady and friend as well. She is very knowledgeable as a personal trainer (private fitness studio), an amazing health coach, holistic nutritionist...specializing in hormones, candida, fungus etc....She has set up an individualized routine for me that touches all aspect of my health. I love it!! For the first time in a long time I feel good!! Michelle will be starting a small group Boot Camp most probably mid-October...I will keep you posted....great one on one service...you will love her!! Call here for more info at 613-360-9331. As well this Saturday, October 4th....9am to 1:30pm at my shop, you will all have the chance to meet Caitlyn and Jenn. They will be sharing with you all that they know and services they offer concerning meditation, yoga, crystals, chakras, raindrop massages etc....come in and hear all that they have to share and offer you...two great local gals! It was a true privilege to have Cornerstone Organics be a part of my patio during the summer months. Their incredibly delicious, fresh and local produce , meats, eggs etc....were out of this world!! They are now done for the season but will be back next summer with all of their amazing products. You can order organic meat, chicken, lamb from them anytime throughout the year....just go to their website ..http://cornerstoneorganics.com/cornerstone/ Raw Turtles and Sweet E`s bars will be available again this Saturday.... (when I have extra time I love spoiling all of you with these two favorites)..Come early for best selection. *My shop is located at 812 Pitt Street, unit 40 (between 8th and 9th Street) at the back of the parking (small restaurant on the left side with new patio). **OPEN SATURDAYS ONLY... 8AM TO 4PM....CASH ONLY BASIS...THANKS IN ADANCE......

FROM MY PANTRY

MAKE YOUR OWN ENGLISH-STYLE FISH AND CHIPS Keep in mind, deep frying is not done often at my house. It is considered a treat when I make homemade fish and chips. I rarely eat out at any restaurant, homemade is my way to go, so I have no guilt here cooking our supper. This is really a delicious meal. I will share with you my secret for restaurant style French fries and beer battered fish. I even used newspaper to drain off any fat from the fried fish and chips, just like the Brits do, which I am proud to say I am.

You will cook the French fries first, and the fish last. You will use the wire basket in the deep fryer to hold the fries.

THE BEST HOMEMADE FRENCH FRIES

Peel and cut into fries, the amount of fries you want to have for your supper. Place the cut up fries in a bowl of cold water. Drain and rinse and drain again with cold water. Use a colander to do this. Now place the well drained fries in a large clean dry tea towel. Wrap them up tightly and pat off any moisture. If you were to add the fries into the hot oil with any water clinging to the fries, they would EXPLODE and you would be badly burned. Keep the kids and pets away while you are frying. You are going to fry the potatoes twice. This is the secret to tender inside but crispy outside French fries.

For the first frying: Place the patted dry potatoes into the wire basket of the fryer, to nearly filling the basket. The fat will be at 350 degrees F. for this first frying time. Cook the potatoes until they just begin to colour slightly. Lift the wire basket from the fryer and flip out the partially cooked fries onto a newspaper lined baking sheet. Proceed until all of the fries have been cooked in this way.

Now jack up the heat of the oil to 375 degrees F. Once this has been reached, fill the wire basket of the fryer with the partially cooked fries and fry them until a nice golden brown has been reached. Flip them onto the newspaper and continue to fry until all of the French fries are browned and cooked.

As soon as you take the fries from the hot oil, sprinkle them with some Kosher salt. The salt will only adhere to the fries when they are piping hot. Now fry your fish......

ENGLISH-STYLE BEER BATTER FISH I got this recipe from an old Joy of Cooking Cookbook. This book is a must have when you need a cooking question answered or a particular recipe. If you see it at a bookstore, buy one as you would certainly get lots of recipes and ideas from it. I can always get a cooking question answered from it.

INGREDIENTS: (This batter will be enough to coat 2 lb. of fish.)

1- 1/3 cup of unbleached all-purpose flour 1 tsp. fine salt 1/4 tsp. finely ground black pepper 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 4/5 cup of beer--- Any kind will do. 2 stiffly beaten egg whites (you fold these in last, don't add them right away) 4 large haddock fillets (or sole or cod fish)

METHOD: -The recipe said to make the batter several hours ahead of frying the fish- I didn't have this option, as it was suppertime and I used it immediately. It turned out just fine. The batter coating the fish was nice and light and crispy. -Heat your oil in your deep fryer to 375 degrees F. Don't use the wire basket in the fryer to fry the fish, the batter will stick into the wire mesh of the basket.Guess what I did my first time frying battered fish? I do things the hard way to make it easier for you! haha. Just fry the fish directly into the hot oil in the fryer. -In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, vegetable oil and beer. Use a whisk to mix ingredients together. -In a separate bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the 2 egg whites until they form very stiff peaks. Gently fold them into the batter, using a rubber spatula. This will give your batter a lovely light fluffy texture. -Pat the fish fillets dry. Then one at a time, dip them into the beer batter, carefully covering both sides of the fish with the batter. -Fry 2 or 3 fish fillets in the hot oil at a time. They will take about 4 or 5 minutes. I turn them once during the frying time to cook and brown both sides evenly. You want the batter to be a

nice golden brown, but not too dark. Once this is completed, using a wire spatula, lift the fish from the fryer and place them on layers of newspapers on a baking sheet. -Now serve your fish and chips. Pass the vinegar and ketchup. EnJoy!

Batman & robin... Guardians of the Galaxy... The avengers... Justice League... Teenage mutant ninja Turtles... These are just some of the well-known teams that have come together over the years in the comic book industry to fight crime and bring order to society. So it only made sense that another "Dynamic Duo" right here in cornwall will be teaming up to do some good in our own community. I am happy to announce that along with my fiance, randy Sauve, owner of Fantasy realm, we will be hosting the 1st Annual cornwall & Area Pop expo (cAPe) on Saturday, April 18th, 2015 at the Benson centre. With almost three years in the making, what started out as an idea is finally seeing its launch. We have both spent the past couple of years attending the various comiccons held every year and due to our extensive research, networking and preparation we are finally ready to launch this event in cornwall. Similar to larger comiccons in cities in canada and the US such as Ottawa, Montreal, Boston and Toronto, just to name a few, the event promises something for fans of all ages. A comiccon or Pop expo for those not familiar with the terms is a convention held for the purpose of educating and creating awareness and appreciation for comics and related artforms. It features a variety of invited guests, exhibitors, artists and displays which could pertain to sci-fi, comic books, pop culture, television and movies, anime, art, literature, horror and many more categories.

Sports & Lifestyle River Kings Sasha Pokulok files lawsuit against NHL - river Kings player Sasha Pokulok, who was drafted 14th overall by the Washington capitals in 2005, is one of two players who has filed a lawsuit against the national Hockey League according to TSn. The allegation states three out of ten former nHL players have or will have brain damage. Sasha Pokulok re-signed with The cornwall river Kings earlier this month.

We are urging all local artists, novelists and any retailers or businesses that pertain to any of the above-mentioned platforms to contact us to reserve your space now as floor space is very limited. Although the date and location have been secured for April 18th, 2015 at the Benson centre, the final details on pricing, location, show time and confirmed guests have yet to be announced. Tickets will be available for pre-sell beginning in January. Please visit our website at www.cornwallpopexpo.com for more information, to find out about guests and exhibitors or to contact us.

Cornwall Colts ranked 12th in Canada – The cornwall colts are ranked 12th in canada. The canadian Junior Hockey League rankings were announced this week. The colts have jumped out a 9-1-0-1 start (.864 winning percentage) to the 2014-15 ccHL season. cornwall’s 19 points are second only to the carleton Place canadians (12-2 for 24 points) who have played three more games than colts. “It’s good to be recognized for the hard work the players have put in so far,” said colts coach Ian MacInnis. “There’s still a lot of hockey left but this is definitely something to be proud of right now.” carleton Place (8th) is the only other ccHL team in the top 20 rankings. The colts host the Fred Page cup eastern canadian championship (April 29-May 2, 2015).

Guest announcements will be made in the coming months as they are secured. However, we are happy to announce that the Doctor Who Society of canada - Ottawa chapter will be one of our confirmed guests. Whovians can get a glimpse of anything Doctor Who with this exhibit and you can expect to get a glimpse of the Daleks as they invade cAPe, perhaps "exterminating" a few in their path.

SEEKER SNIPPETS

Overall attendance in the larger cities can run into tens of thousands. cornwall cannot reasonably expect to draw such a large attendance in its first year so we therefore expect a few thousand people. And lastly, in the larger comiccon events, there are up to 300-400 exhibitors and dozens of celebrities, guests and artists. For our first year, we plan to have up to 50 exhibitors and guests/artists. every show has its roots and has to start somewhere but we do strongly believe that this will be an impressive first show that we can grow each year.

LIFESTYLE

OUT & ABOUT

POP EXPO coming to Cornwall

cornwall's Pop expo will only differ from those held in the larger cities in the fact that the admission prices, overall attendance and exhibitor counts will be lower. In larger cities, admission costs can run into hundreds of dollars for a family of four. cAPe plans to allow Free admission to children 10 and under and to make things affordable for the entire family. This is something we felt was important to offer cornwall as some people have never been to a comiccon, nor can they afford to travel all over the country doing so, especially with a family.

ONCE UPON A PAINTBRUSH

ART & ENTERTAINMENT •

ART & ENTERTAINMENT

by Rose Desnoyers

by Patrick Guindon Art, much like life, does not always go according to plan. If nothing else, that is the beauty in it all. Take for example, my latest (and greatest) creation – my son. Kingsley Otis Guindon was born five weeks ahead of schedule, to a couple of quite shellshocked parents, on the first day of school. As a teacher, I thrive on consistent routines and plans. This is a huge juxtaposition to my approach with art. I always have just gone with the flow, and let the paintbrush lead the way. It seems to have been training for life’s little curveballs, the wonderful and magnificent ones, and the wild, not so fantastic ones. We were extremely fortunate, and Kingsley came out just fine. Art is not always so lucky.

As a parent, letting things go by dropping the cookie-cutter crafts, Pinterest projects (the perfect, contrived ones that are just oh so cute) and control of where the paint lands can be rough. I urge you to consider all of the paint splatters that life has shot straight into your eyeballs when creating with a little one. consider the careful balance of exploration and technique. In very little ones, technique shouldn’t even be a concern! How do you go about all of this anyway? How do you create with a little one, let alone a newborn who can’t even hold his head up? exposure. It’s all about exposure, and the culture that you are creating with your words, actions, tongue-bites and facial expressions. It’s all about the time you give it. It’s not about creating an identity for your child. So many parents mean well, but force an identity: my child loves hockey … my child is smart … my child is a dancer. These (and a million others) are all fantastic experiences and beliefs to expose a child to – but we must be careful to not determine who they are before they’ve even had a chance to try. My goal in my new role as “daddy” is to expose Kingsley to art. It is crucial that all people in today’s 21st century world have some capacity to be creative. This doesn’t

mean that I want, or expect, him to be a painter, a cartoonist, an illustrator, or anything 613-931-1194 else like that.Cornwall What I DO want is him to be able to solve problems, communicate and express himself, and find his own path to pride and happiness. Art exploration aids in all of those areas. By watching daddy and mommy create regularly, by trying out his own projects (when he does more than sleep, eat and poop), and by living in a culture of creativity, he will certainly learn to problem solve, communicate, express and find his own voice. Isn’t this what we all want for our children? And so, I aim to expose Kingsley. His first art project? Painting a hand print onto mommy’s birthday card. It was a huge failure, resulting in green paint in his hair, on his face and under his nails. I was able to clean it up and hide the evidence, still giving the card from Kingsley to his mom, even though it was a blob. A perfect blob, mind you! Then, he slept in my arms as I worked on a custom order. As I write this, he is draped happily (and well supported, don’t worry!) across my arms, too – because writing is yet another expression outlet. We sing, we dance, we read and we look at the paintings in the house. Only time will tell what his outlet will be – painting, drawing, sculpting, a sport, dance, who knows? But I will be happy knowing that he was exposed to it all. If you’re looking for a project this month, why not try this? Just give them paint. See what happens. It may be nothing more than a blob, but they’ll have expressed something, and it will probably feel fantastic.

“I saw a lot of my friends there.

Inside, my favourite was the racing cars. I came first 5 times with Lucky 39. ( a great little orange car)

Outside, my favourite was the big red play structure. Wow, it was so fast. The light show was awesome…it looked like a super-heroes video game.

Lots of people gave us a souvenir, like candy, apples, suckers, and even COMIC BOOKS! My favourite snack was the pizza. It was hot and good.”

This was definitely well- planned event. hope to make it again next year, and will certainly allow more time then. Kudos to the organizers mai-Liis renaud of Invitations and more by mai-Liis. CHAD’S COMMENTS:

Barbara Leduc

Outside were food booths with free samples (never did make it to the curds, nor the donuts, darn!), inflated structures with reasonable lineups and everyone being friendly and patient ( even when a toddler jumped into a structure and stayed in an area his mommy couldn’t fit into to retrieve him. The older kids waited patiently, no complaining, until he emerged 10 minutes later smiling like he had conquered Everest). I love the sight of all the discarded shoes off to the side, while barefoot or socked kids await the 1 minute adventure, then right back in line! Again, so much more outside!

I must admit that I was quite a bit skeptical about the validity of this product when first asked about it, but several devoted customers have convinced me that there is some merit to it. Just studying the shapes and following the crevices within each rock is an interesting means of meditation. We may be far from the coastline here but you can bring some balance and a little bit of the sea right into your home to enjoy for many years to come.

Some of my favourite booths: the library exhibit; the specimens and lab stuff, including magnifying glasses , at the Cooper Marsh table ( how clever when people know that kids have to touch, lift, smell, and rearrange your whole display while getting wonderful answers to their questions…I was so impressed), the drumming circle with all those enticing drums..(thanks, Jody); puppets; toys; martial arts with a large inflated guy kicking almost to the ceiling; a laser light show; a well-supervised remote-control car race track (2, actually) where we spent a lot of time; and so much more that’s almost a blur (remember, I was being guided by an energetic 9-year old).

regardless of what you believe about salt lamps, the light itself is soothing and creates a beautiful warm ambiance. Also being a natural product, no two lamps are exactly the same. Salt lamps absorb moisture and you should protect your furniture wherever you place them. When not in use, store the lamp in a plastic bag or dry place and to clean them just wipe with a damp cloth.

My grandson Chad and I spent 3 hours loving everything at KIDS’ EXPO, before we reluctantly left because of other commitments. There was a terrific crowd with kids of all ages, so friendly, strolling around the salons and roaming in and out to enjoy activities spread everywhere. We started by receiving a sharp cloth bag/backpack from Ontario Power Generation so we could collect flyers and goodies along the way.

The lamps are recommended for smelly and smoky areas, pet areas, bedrooms, around computers, televisions and electronic equipment. Meditation areas, yoga centers, spas and massage centers are all great places to use these salt lamps as well.

natural salt products can freshen and improve air quality and many see them as a great antidote for improving the atmosphere of a home by reducing the proportion of positively charged ions.

I’ll tell you what’s up…spirits, energy, smiley

People suffering from allergies, asthma or respiratory complaints have been known to gain relief. Many sleep best by the ocean and appreciate the freshness and ionisation of air that a small level of salt can bring.

Today I would like to introduce you to salt lamps. If you are just a little curious as to how these lamps work, I am afraid that I have no scientific proof that they do indeed work. Having said that, just ask a few of our regular customers that have purchased them and they will tell you how much better they feel with these visually charming lamps in their homes.
