Neknomiwhat?
Recently, a somewhat silly movement has been spreading like a virus on social media sites: Neknominations.
What is a neknomination? It is a pointless random action which basically requires individuals to film themselves while "necking" (quickly ingesting) a rather large quantity of alcohol, then nominate another person to do the same within 24 hours. In other words, it's a dare.
The online drinking game which allegedly originated with a video Ross Samson, a London Rugby star, posted on Facebook, has been vastly criticized because of its possible lethal consequences. So far, 5 deaths have been attributed to the game. Like everything else, it has made its way to our town.
About 4 weeks ago, I started seeing the hashtag #Neknomination on my facebook stream. For about a week, notifications were popping everywhere. Curious, I got to see a few of my friends drinking bottles of beer in the snow or while doing cartwheels. I watched one or two videos, then stopped even paying attention because of how silly, not to mention dangerous, I thought it was. Then, something magical happened.
After the Bowl For Kids event held by Big Brothers and Big Sisters, something new started popping out on my stream: Donation Nominations. This version of the game turns drinking into random acts of kindness, a much better take on the whole concept if you ask me. The originator of the movement in the region was apparently Mr. Patrick Larose, who started it all with the Agape Centre and moved on from there. With the hashtag #donationnomination, the city of Cornwall has been swept by good deeds ranging from supporting a favourite charity financially to donating time to a valuable cause. We, the Seeker Chicks, were tagged in a nomination ourselves, and chose to support the Boys and Girls club by buying 10 pink shirts for pink shirt day, that we in turn donated to our readers. You can see the video on our website. I love it when people turn negative into positive. If more people were like that, can you imagine all the good that could be done? And that's my challenge for you this week. I nominate every living soul in Cornwall to do a random act of kindness. #DonationNominationCornwall.

SEEKER SNIPPETS / YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS
Presented by Jason Setnyk News & Politics 2010 Mayoral Candidate now running for City Council seat Congratulations and kudos to Cornwall and In 2014 Mark A MacDonald will not be running for Mayor, but instead the former City Councillor will be eyeing a seat on Council again. In 2010 Mark A MacDonald ran for Mayor of Cornwall against incumbent Bob Kilger and lost. In 2011 MacDonald ran for MPP, this time falling short against Jim McDonell. Since that time Mark A MacDonald has been vocal on several key issues, and he has become a grass roots leader in the community. Most notably with the closure of the Cornwall General Hospital, he was instrumental in organizing concerned citizens to try and save the hospital for future public benefit and use. Now Mark A MacDonald has been a strong voice in the movement to stop the building of tanks on the City’s water front. He has been writing a series of short and clear letters to the editor critical of Council on key issues that resonate well with voters.

Transport Canada received the documents during today’s meeting for their signature. Meetings will be established in the near future to initiate the formal divestiture talks. Meanwhile, City Council held a special in-camera meeting on Thursday, February 27th to receive an update on the situation surrounding the storage tanks development site in the harbour area of Cornwall. And for the second straight Saturday night, tickets are available for only $5. Children under the age of 12 (and accompanied by an adult) who wear any hockey jersey will get in for $3. The club is also organizing a Meet and Greet with its players after the LNAH game in Salon B at the Civic Complex. The cost for the party is $3. Season ticket holders will be admitted at no charge. Letters & Opinions Jason Setnyk asks should Le Village be reb r a n d e d Cornwall’s Art District? Jason Setnyk writes a reply to a message Todd Bennett posted on social media about reviving Le Village through Arts and Culture. Here is the response: In many ways Le Village and area is already the hub of arts and culture in Cornwall – from the Port Movie Theatre, to a photography studio, to La Maison, to a bilingual newspaper, to Aultsville Theatre, Strung Out Guitars, tattoo shops and more. It was also the home of Cafe Connectionz and some independently owned book stores too. Le Village Business Improvement Area had created a Strategic Plan in 2011. The plan outlined the need for beautification of the commercial district, improved parking, communications, and community partnerships. Heart of the City also has programs to help landowners in upgrading and renovating commercial properties. There have been a few improvements to the beautification of the district, however over the past few years more businesses have also had to close their doors. I don’t think businesses in Le Village receive the same support or get the same visibility as down town businesses. Perhaps the downtown Cornwall BIA is better organized, or perhaps there is a stigma that effects the east-end of Cornwall, or a mix of both. It is a complex issue. Moving forward one strategy to better improve Le Village could be to promote it as the ‘arts district of Cornwall’. With the building of condos the demographic is slowly changing. With a possible University coming to Nav Canada the demographic of the east end could drastically change. A re-branding exercise would be a sound marketing move at this time. This alone will not revitalize the area, but it would be an important step for a long term strategy. Thank you for reading.

FOCUS ON THE GOOD with Carol Grant
This week's spotlight will be on
THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH SERVICES' DAY AWAY PROGRAMS AND TELEPHONE ASSURANCE PROGRAM.
Our WEEKLY LOOK at CHARITIES & ORGANIZATIONS in our COMMUNITY!
There are many long-time clients as well as volunteers who have been with the program since it first opened in 1988. The volunteers and clients look forward to their weekly "Day Away" and enjoy the socialization with the other clients. Many have stated they have established a personal relationship with the other clients or volunteers and could not imagine a week without their day away. The Telephone Assurance Program links a senior living alone with a volunteer who will make a friendly call to that isolated senior and determine that the individual is not in crisis or at risk of harm. This "checkup" greatly increases peace of mind and security and lessens the feeling of loneliness and isolation. This free program is offered Monday through Friday and hopes to reach out to other isolated seniors in need. For more information volunteering with or attending the Adult Day Program (either Senior or Special Day Away) or the Telephone Assurance Program (TAP), please contact 613-933-3384 ext 4234.
The Senior and Special Day Away Programs at the Glen Stor Dun Lodge exist to provide assistance to frail seniors and adults as well as those seniors and adults with physical disabilities. By attending the Day Away Programs, these individuals are able to live in their own home longer and prevent premature or inappropriate institutionalization.
Some of the volunteers at the program
Clients enjoying a St. Patrick's Day event
The staff and volunteers at the Day Away Programs assist in the care of a loved one by providing rest for caregivers. While at the program, the clients participate in social, intellectual and recreational activities such as crafts, an exercise program and games such as cards or bingo. Every week approximately 75 clients attend a weekly program which is offered from Monday to Friday. While there is a small cost associated with the program ($20 for those requiring transportation and $17 for those who provide their own transportation), the program itself is not-for-profit and not only offers the socialization, programming and transportation if needed but also a hot, nutritious meal and snacks.
Stay tuned for next weeks “Focus on the Good” feature!

Moving Week After a month of back and forth between Kingston and Cornwall with frequent stops in Brockville, my dual city life is coming to a conclusion; and I can’t wait. The slow move process that I employed to come back, worked, however now I am ready to fully migrate back to Cornwall. The first sign that this was over was that moment at midnight on Saturday when my Internet and cable came to a screeching halt as I cancelled my services for March 1st. In Cornwall, I have not connected any services yet, as TV’s and all supporting technology are still in Kingston. Being split between two cities has been taxing as things are not where they belong in Cornwall and are packed in Kingston. This Saturday when we pick up the UHaul and load it up, it will be a relief. Friends have stepped up to help on both sides and I owe a major thanks to the special person who has kept me fed when I am in town. I am not in one place long enough to have proper groceries, my cupboards are bare in Cornwall and in Kingston, most things had to be thrown out, so having home cooked delicious meals is a blessing. It is also a time where material things do not matter as much, although I truly am enjoying my new shower and bath at my Cornwall place. The little things are making this time that much better. A night of listening to music and living room dancing was a highlight for me this week. I am also proud of how much I purged for this move. I have too many purses and shoes; my walk-in closet was one of the final area to be packed, I sorted two piles and without delay delivered the give-away items to charity, so no last minute cold feet could occur. I look forward to settling in and making a fresh start in town. It won’t be long now…

City undertaking storm sewer improvements in Legion Park The City of Cornwall would like to advise residents that work is currently underway to improve a storm sewer drain in the area of Legion Park, near the baseball diamonds.
As part of the project, a storm sewer drain is being added to the ditch along Bergeron Drive. Improvements will also be made in the area of the parking lot south of the baseball diamonds. The work is being completed by Malyon Excavation. It was originally scheduled to be completed last fall. The work is being done now to ensure the improvements are complete by the spring and the start of the baseball season.
The present pipe installation work will be complete by the end of the week, and the contractor will then return in May to complete sod restoration. The work is not associated in any way to the nearby storage tanks site on the Cornwall Harbour.

There are many different ways to barter that can be effective ways for small business owners to expand your businesses and/or reduce your costs. Bartering has many benefits and there are a number of reasons why you may want to explore bartering. • • •

Before agreeing to a barter arrangement, measure what you will be giving and what you will be receiving in return - the two should be of relatively equal value. You should also verify that the other person is qualified to provide the product or service that they will be providing and that they have the authority to make the agreement. It is normally better to work out the particulars of a barter arrangement through the business owner or manager. A written agreement should outline the terms of the bartering arrangement, and it can be the most important part of the relationship. Be sure to clearly outline what each party is providing as well as a timeline or deadline. You should also plan to communicate with the other party on a regular basis in order to continue to build the relationship. Bartering is not always in the cards - do your homework and choose reputable businesses that you want to be associated with. Bartering is a give-and-take proposition that can be very valuable to both parties involved, but only if both parties understand the concept. Contact the Centre by calling 613-933-0074 ext. #2276 or email entrepreneurship@cornwall.ca
Typically, bartering begins when one business owner approaches another Candy Pollard, Business Consultant, business owner who offers something they require. Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off, proudly celebrating its 20th Year Anniversary in 2014, is a not-for-profit organization that is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of 18 community leaders who work 11 months of the year to bring this festival to life. I made this delicious supper in my crockpot a couple of weeks ago. Ken Shaver gave me several recipes last fall, this being one of them. It is layers of ground beef, onions, potatoes, pinto and romano beans and seasoned tomatoes. Simply delicious and easy to get going before you head o to work. Your supper wil be ready and waiting for you when you get in after a long day. I love this- at work all day and no stress wondering what you will make for supper. I hope you try this, I know your family will love it too! This would be a perfect meal to have after a day out on the ski slopes. Thanks again Ken for sharing and caring. I'm looking forward to trying the other recipes you gave me. Enjoy a great week!
You probably will get 6 to 8 servings from this recipe. Ken travels stateside to get the Mexican stewed tomatoes at the Aldi Store on your way into Massena. This is the kind of customer I have at my store, Sharyn's Pantry, Ken even went so far as to give me a can of the tomatoes he uses in his recipe. In anticipation of making this recipe, I picked up a few cans of these spicy stewed tomatoes. The brand is 'Casa Mamita diced tomatoes and green chillies - a 10 oz. can.' You could use regular canned stewed tomatoes and add a bit of green chili pepper or dehydrated jalopeno pepper which we sell at Sharyn's Pantry. Either will work fine. The nice thing is, you have all needed ingredients in your pantry. You just need the ground beef. I changed the recipe slightly, here is what I did:
KEN'S CROCKPOT SUPPER
INGREDIENTS: 2 or 3 onions, coarsely chopped (I used 3 large onions) 1- 1/2 to 2 lb. lean ground beef (use Sharyn's Pantry locally-raised lean ground beef - I used 2 lbs.) 5 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced about 1/4" thick 1- 19 oz. can of pinto beans, rinsed and drained (You can use any 2 - 19 oz. cans of beans you like: kidney, pinto, romano, cannelini, whatever.)(I used what I had in my pantry.) 1- 19 oz. can of romano beans, rinsed and drained 2- 10 oz. cans of the Casa Mamita stewed tomatoes from the Aldi Store OR use 1 - 19 oz. can of stewed or diced tomatoes with a little added kick of dried jalapeno peppers- use about 1 tsp. 1- 10 oz. can of Heinz or Aylmer tomato soup (Not Campbell's - it's not a sharp enough tomato flavour.) 2 heaping tsp. minced garlic in oil 1 tsp. dried rubbed basil 1 tsp. granulated sugar 1 tsp. dried rubbed Greek oregano
METHOD: -Chop up the onions and brown them along with the lean ground beef in a skillet. Cook until no pink colour remains in the beef. Season the meat with a little salt and pepper. Drain off any fat. Place this mixture in your crockpot. -Peel and slice up the potatoes. Cut them about 1/4" in thickness. Place a layer of them over the ground beef and onions. You can add a bit extra if necessary. You want a single layer of sliced potatoes to completely cover the meat layer. -Next, drain the both cans of beans in a colander. Rinse off the beans and drain well. Sprinkle them over the layer of potatoes in your crockpot. -Now, in a small saucepan, combine the stewed tomatoes and tomato soup. Use a whisk to mix thoroughly. Add the rubbed basil and oregano and the minced garlic in oil and sugar. Mix well. Just heat up the mixture. -Pour this in an even layer over the beans. -Place the lid on your crockpot and set the heat to LOW. Cook this casserole undisturbed for 7 or 8 hours. No stirring during this time. It's not necessary. I found 7 hours was perfect. Don't worry if you go 8 hours of so, nothing will overcook , there is lots of liquid. ENJoY!

FROM MY P ANTRY
A GREAT CROCKPOT SUPPER
Tax return choices -spend or invest? Many Canadians look forward to an annual tax refund from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It's a miniwindfall-and it's tempting to spend the money on something frivolous. But there are other uses for your refund. When you use the money you receive wisely, it can pay big dividends over time. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of your refund. Invest in an RRSP. Use your tax refund to get an early start on your annual Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution. The sooner you get money into your RRSP, the sooner you take advantage of tax-deferred growth. Make up for missed RRSP contributions. You're allowed to make up for missed contributions going back to 1991. Using your refund will increase your pool of tax-sheltered assets, potentially boost retirement wealth and create a larger tax deduction this year or in future years. Pay down or eliminate high-interest debt. Use your refund to pay down credit card balances, personal loans or other expensive debt. You'll reduce interest costs. Pay down your RRSP loan. If you borrowed money to make an RRSP contribution, pay down the loan as soon as your refund arrives. Pay down the mortgage. Every dollar you put toward your mortgage principal is a dollar on which you won't pay interest for the next 5, 10 or even 25 years. Contribute to an RESP. Put money into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children or grandchildren. An RESP is an excellent tax-deferred vehicle to save for post-secondary education. Spend a bit on yourself. It won't hurt to spend a little of your refund on yourself. After all, you have to have some fun in your financial life. But try to limit it to 10% to 20%. Now here's the bad news. You don't really want a refund. That money you get back from the CRA every year is like an interestfree loan to the government. By paying more in taxes throughout the year than you should, you've let Ottawa use your money. Plus, you loose out on potential investment returns until your overpaid taxes are returned.
If you regularly receive a refund, consider having the income tax deducted from your regular pay cheque reduced. Obtain a copy of Canada Revenue Agency Form T1213 (Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source) at your local tax office or on the CRA's Internet site. Submit the form to the CRA, which will send you a letter of authority allowing your employer to reduce deductions during the year. Edward Jones, Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

ONCE UPON A PAINTBRUSH by Patrick Guindon
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS This month, I want to throw some creative project ideas your way. They don’t have that much detail, because artists don’t follow steps anyway. In fact, that is the single contributing factor to loss of creativity (according to my own thoughts on the matter) – too many steps means that creativity is not at work, because everything has already been decided. So, this March Break if you are looking for art projects to do with your kids, stay off Pinterest and don’t waste money on “Craft Kits” – you aren’t doing your kids any favours. Instead, hit the Open Shelf (a phrase used by Early Childhood Educators, the unsung heroes of the kindergarten world, for art times where there are no rules – just materials and time). Idea No. 1: Musically Driven – Some rules with this one. You need to set out some supplies, and have music. The goal is to create a piece of art in one song. Put on something amazing and let them go! But when the song is over, the art piece is done. HANG IT UP! It’s a creative celebration. You can dig into this in different ways – limit the supplies to certain colours, or only paint, or only glue and “stuff”; create an entire album of artwork by listening to an entire CD, start to finish. Or, use different styles of music, different emotional levels of music, and so on, to create different pieces.
Idea No. 2: Stamping – Open the shelf with a variety of things from around the house, and a few trays of paints. You can use a cleaned up Styrofoam meat dish (the thing that your hamburg comes in) or a plate. Using the classic potato stamp to get started, see what else you can use. I’ve walked into kindergarten classes where the kids are rolling their toy cars through paint and onto paper (it is so cool). You can use cups, hands, beads, toy jewelery … it goes on and on. Try limiting the paint at first to one or two complementary colours, otherwise it may turn into a brown piece, but that’s what exploration is about. This is fun for anyone. You can create simple patterns (bam – that’s math, folks!), detailed compositions, or simply fun prints. This is so much fun to do and there are no mistakes. Idea No. 3: All the Wrong Colours – Trace a photograph of yourself, and then colour or paint it. Use all the wrong colours. Try a pattern – stripes, polka dots, etc. Do four of these (or more!) and frame it like a classic Andy Warhol Marilyn print. Idea No. 4: Monsters – This is my favourite, and is the single most successful Arty Party I am asked to run. I am giving away my secret today so that you can have some fun. Monsters are rarely seen and never properly photographed, so we can use our imaginations to make monster compositions. Anything goes. Use a basic shape, add one, two, or more eyes (even more interesting if they are different sizes), add a horn or two. No rules. Just have fun! If this goes well, try making a sculpture of your monster!

LE COIN de la FRANCOPHONIE
Well, it’s been quite the winter! There still is no let up from the snow and cold. Some of us like this weather. It’s been a wonderful year for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Soon we will be planning our first hike of the season to the Adirondacks. I know lots of people in Cornwall who have never seen Adirondack Park. You don’t have to climb a mountain. You can go there and enjoy a swim on a hot day, or just relax on a shore. In about 1 ½ hours you can be in a beautiful location with a picnic, bathing suits, towels and sun screen. We took our kids to Meacham Lake many times and it remains one of my favourite places to visit today. Of course the best places became that way due to memories of various events and adventures that happened there. I remember our kids and their cousins making a fort out of ferns in the forest near the tent. I remember our dog running off as we were halfway up a mountain and we found her waiting in the parking lot by our car after the hike. I remember eating delicious food cooked on the bar-b-que after a day of sailing and swimming. Most of all I remember an evening hike on a trail around the lake. Picture this: A trail going through a mature hemlock forest with a mirror- like lake on your right. On the left there is a hill sloping up and up. The hemlocks are huge, with the undergrowth being sparse so that the light from the setting sun casts a glow on the trunks and ground cover of juniper, stunted deciduous trees and mosses. It was magical! With no wind, no human voices, and no sounds of motor boats, the forest was transformed into a cathedral. It did not last! As soon as the sun set a few minutes later, the effect was gone. Years later, I still have a vivid picture in my mind of that feat of nature . It’s no wonder that I love to return to this place every summer , and no wonder that I’m thinking about it right now.

Online learning is becoming a far more popular option in recent years. For residents in the Cornwall area having the flexibility to save money and study at a distance means an educational goal can be achieved. Doug Callaghan was able to take the Internet Applications and Web Development Fundamentals certificate from Loyalist College, over 250 km away, at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Cornwall.
“The centre provides me with a quiet space to study with up-to-date computers and fast connections. I can work at home but I like being able to come into the centre because I find that it improves my concentration,” says Callaghan.

Winners included: Mitchell Ferguson, gold, culinary, Gananoque Secondary School; Megan Moreau, gold, job interview, Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute; Abigail Graves, gold, prepared speech, Russell High School; Rebecca Anderson, gold, hairstyling, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School; Tiffany Roskell and Ashley Smith, bronze, twoperson carpentry, Seaway District High School; Cody Edgley, silver, cabinet making, Athens District High School; Cole Tessier, gold, auto service technology, Glengarry District High School; and Will Freeland, silver, auto service technology, Tagwi Secondary School.
Greetings;
Alex MacDougall, the board’s Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Facilitator, said the competition offered several benefits for participants.
Mark A. MacDonald
“We’re introducing secondary students to the trades through these competitions,” said MacDougall. “We also feel it’s a good team-building exercise for these students as a lot of these competitions are done with partners. “It also gives students an opportunity to meet kids from other schools.” It’s important to expose students to the trades because there will be a growing number of jobs available in future as current tradespeople retire, he said. Four out of ten new jobs over the next twenty years will be in the trades. By the year 2020, Canada will be short one million tradespeople. In Ontario alone, 26 per cent of skilled workers will be retiring over the next 10 years. Students said the competition provides a good snapshot of life in the trades, allowing them to decide if a trade is right for their future.
The colossal mistake of building chemical storage tanks on our waterfront is a prime example of a city council lacking clear direction, which I must take some responsibility for. We desperately need a city council that can focus on an agenda that will bring some meaningful progress to our city. Resignations, criminal charges, huge payoffs and secret meetings were just some of the issues that distracted this council from doing their job, and the tank farm is our result. It's very encouraging to see some new, energetic people taking an interest in the municipal election. All of the community groups in Cornwall are opposed to these chemical tanks because they know that the image of our city is taking a huge hit. Let's not make the same mistake again, we need a big change and Cornwall needs a council that will work together as a team. 613-551-4351
Last week our News Editor Jason Setnyk asked: Should Cornwall’s landmark historic bridge be saved? we received these comments What a brilliant idea. Probably a lot less costly than tearing it down and it would cause less disruption to traffic. Wish we could add some valuable suggestions but you do have our support. A garden, pedestrian walkway with some kiosks and picture ops would be a nice atttraction. Kathleen & Peter McArthur Peter McArthur
