Return of the Boomers! by Bob Sloan I am happy to report that Good Friday’s annual pilgrimage survives in Cornwall where every year friends and family re-unite for a few hours to connect after a long winter and welcome back summer over a few laughs, and some tasty brews. Diehard fans will tell you about years ago, how they remember the ritual was to gather over at Sprague’s. Yet after many years it seemed to have faded away, perhaps due to all of us getting older. However, this year I believe we have confirmed we are back together once again with a newly defined location down at the Blue Anchor. You might ask what caused this revival to return, and I am thinking maybe it’s likely due to the scenic waterfront view, or you might argue it’s the cold beer served up, or just maybe it’s by a little help from a local DJ that might explain it! Whatever you think it might be this year was certainly “the place to be…unless you were a perch!” Just a short year ago we saluted the Golden Boomers (the first Boomers to turn age 65) where we flooded the room with great songs from the 60’s & 70’s. This year back by popular demand we echoed the same sentiments labeling the headliner - “Return of the Boomers!” We didn’t disappoint the boomers as we soaked them in a giant tsunami of music of their youth that relentlessly pounded them with wave after wave of incredible songs. For added fun during the afternoon, we mixed in a clever trivia contest that quizzed the gang on “The Legends of Rock & Roll”. To accent each artist mentioned we accompanied the answer with an appropriate song. The impact this had was almost like a spiritual “love-in” from the sixties, as we gasped at those memories evident when each time the room would break into song and never missing a lyric. The volume was cranked just loud enough where you heard the digitally remastered media at its best, which gave an almost “live-like” performance sound quality that seemed to work its magic among us. The trivia included some photos, with one being a cute little boy “Andy Gibb” was the answer, and then we played Bee Gees! Another answer was Duane Allman, nicknamed Skydog by Wilson Pickett, where a rare recording of the duo playing the Beatles, “Hey Jude” was spun – the sax was so amazzzzing! We couldn’t forget Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Freddy Mercury, Jerry Garcia, and Jimmy Hendrix, to name a few. The music was so rich that it triggered so many memories for us all, and only if we had more time, we could have played so much more. Undoubtedly boomers had the best music of the century, no question! Those two decades boasted hundreds of bands who delivered thousands of hits filled by pure raw talent that you just never tire of listening. The legacy continues as is evident when we see more and more remakes of our favourite songs appear on today’s billboards just proves its continued popularity. One tribute in our trivia was my personal favourite, was Janice Joplin…singing Kris Kristofferson’s, Me and Bobby McGee. No boomer party would be complete without this song. Locked together with our arms over each other’s shoulders all of us swayed to the music as we sang up every song we all knew … “Freedoms just another word for nothin’ left to lose, nothin’, don’t mean nothing’ hon if it ain’t free”. I get goose bumps every time I hear those lyrics, because no song better describes the way things were. Our final question was reserved for the most precious artist of all who was sadly taken away from the world by a lunatic fan - Mark David Chapman. John Lennon of the Beatles, left a profound legacy through his music, where it speaks to us even today, and gently reminds us what really matters the most through his lyrics– our closing trivia tune – “Imagine”. Another Good Friday has come and gone, and my songs are tucked away for another day, but never too far to be called upon, especially if there is a boomer in the house. Maybe I will be invited back next year, and I do hope to see you again where we can enjoy some more of those great tunes together…until then cheers to all the boomers!

EYE ON SOCIETY by Jason Setnyk
More Coffee Grinds City of Cornwall should bet against a Casino! Gambling is a dangerous and addictive vice. In moderation it can be fun, however it also causes serious harm such as bankruptcy, divorce, and even suicide. Now that McGuinty has recklessly opened the door for casinos, the Municipal Government here in Cornwall will explore the issue. Glen Grant and David Murphy both seem to be in favour of a casino. So why are casinos a bad idea? Here is a quote from Rob Simpson, head of the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre, as published in the Globe and Mail: “The bottom line is that gambling is the only government initiative that knowingly harms the people it is elected to serve”. The government of Ontario spends $36 million to address gambling addiction, but spends half a billion marketing gambling. In a City like Cornwall that has poverty and employment issues, a casino would be truly destructive. Some may argue that there is already a casino a car ride away from Cornwall, and that a casino here would generate revenue for the City. All valid points, however that does not trump the moral issue that casinos are addictive and harmful to many people. I hope Cornwall's City Government has the vision and sense to stop the spread of government sanctioned gambling in this province. Doctors live by the oath "Primum non nocere" (Do no harm), and politicians should live by that same creed.
When the going gets tough, Leslie O'Shaughnessy gets going! I am disappointed that Leslie O'Shaughnessy is stepping down. This has been a very frustrating term, however I believe Leslie O'Shaughnessy had the potential to do a lot of good and to speak up for the citizens of Cornwall. Now that is lost, because he quit. I wish Leslie the best of success in his future endeavours. The City of Cornwall has to fill the vacant seat, so they could have a by-election, or appoint someone. Traditionally they appoint the person who finished #11. There are some questions about Gerry Samson's place of residence, but if he does have a legitimate Cornwall address, he could very well be on City Council. If there was an outstanding issue concerning his residence, former City Councillor Mary Ann Hug who finished in twelfth might be another option. Arts, Culture, and Politics My Mother Nature Book Launch! Last week the Local Seeker published my interview with author Jaymie Thurler. Sandra Taylor-Hedges is offering art classes this Spring 2012! Some of you might be interested in arts classes, or read her column in the Local Seeker, but who is Sandra? She is a Graduate with Distinction from St. Lawrence College's Fine Arts Program and has studied watercolour application in the United States for many years from Artists such as Don Andrews and Alex Powers. Sandra has been teaching painting & sculpting to beginners and advanced artists for over 17 years in her Studio and for the WMCA of Canada. Sandra also teaches for St. Lawrence College in the Continuing Education program and Iohahi:io Adult Education Center in the Mohawk territory. Sandra serves on the board of Directors as President of the Focus Art Association and on the Board of Directors of the Cornwall Cultural Committee, a grass roots group working toward establishing a Center for the Arts in Cornwall. Studio One Cat Squared was named after a painting that she created in Art College that was done tongue in cheek when studying Abstract Art. Sandra shows her art in both Canada and the USA. To learn about what classes are being offered and prices checkout Sandra’s ad on page 14 . Cuts to CBC a huge disappointment! With all our tax dollars wasted for F35s, it is a huge disappointment that the Conservatives are cutting the CBC for ideological reasons. The CBC will have to find savings somewhere. It might come at the expense of Hockey Night in Canada. Don Cherry is a celebrity and a household name, but at $800,000 a year, his salary is going to have a huge bulls-eye on it.

Dear Seeker Chicks Letter to the Editor: The Parade of Nations is proud to present Gerard Piette, kite master extraordinaire, on Sunday, April 22, at 2 pm at the Benson Centre. The presentation will be an appropriate event to celebrate Earth Day and hopefully, it will move Cornwall's burgeoning kite movement forward. A complete release follows and is attached. Please promote our event through publication. For more information, please contact me, Elaine MacDonald, Chair of the Parade of Nations annual Kite Festival 613-938-7763 COMPLETE RELEASE: Celebrate Earth Day 2012 at the Benson Centre, Cornwall, at 2 p.m., with Kite Master, Gerard Piette. Gerard’s flew his first kite, a used one, in 2009, while he was searching for an outdoor hobby. He was immediately hooked. He soon moved from repairing kites to building them and the challenges of getting and keeping them airborne have made him an expert on weather and wind as well as construction. Gerard has a range of kites, from simple to ultra-complex which he will display on April 22. He has twice won top honours at the Cornwall Kite Festival, first for the biggest kite and another for the most environmentally progressive kite. The latter was made entirely of found materials like spars from an old umbrella skeleton and a sail made from a dry cleaning bag. That kite drifted over the Bowl in Lamoureux Park, shooting video and photos all day. Gerard is always experimenting. Early on, he hung a small camera from a kite to make an airborne movie and excerpts will be incorporated into his talk at the Benson Centre. A resident of Casselman, Gerard is a craftsman, artist and kite enthusiast who will engage all ages with his presentation of kiting how-to’s, aerial movies, a kite display and, weather permitting, a demonstration. Gerard is an ambassador for kiting as a do-it-yourself hobby with limitless possibilities, like nature itself: “Being in the wind is being close to nature and brings me the freedom I last felt as a small boy. Understanding weather, identifying birds, watching the kite ride the waves, all of this is part of the fun of kiting.” Gerard’s presentation is sponsored by the Parade of Nations, which hosts the annual Cornwall Kite Festival and which is proud to present Gerard and his kites to Cornwall on Earth Day. Moon Thai and Japanese Cuisine People will drive a long way for a good meal, and increasingly, that means more out-of-town license plates parked outside Cornwall restaurants. In a review published in the Watertown Daily Times newspaper, food critic Walter Siebel and three friends recently traveled from Watertown NY to Cornwall to eat at Moon restaurant (Thai & Japanese Cuisine). The result was glowing praise from a person who obviously approaches food with a lot of passion. "We’re over the moon for Moon," wrote Mr. Siebel. Underwater Hockey Nationals to be held in Cornwall! Jason Setnyk: Tressia, what does this upcoming competition mean to you? Tressia Murphy: If I win my divisions at the Canadian Naturals I am able to recieve my pro card. Which means that I am no longer able to compete at the amateur level, but that I am able to win cash awards, and start making money as a professional athlete. Team Canada will also be choosing their team members at this show. So there is a possiblitly that I may be chosen for that. When I say divisions, it is because I qualified for two. I placed first in Bikini Masters (over 35), and 5th in Bikini Tall (over 5'6). I'm 5'9 and about 135lbs of season and 120-125 for showtime. My modelling weight was between 104-110lbs max! Jason Setnyk: You have had a diverse and interesting career. What was it like to travel and work abroad?
Tressia Murphy: Overseas work was incredible, but very difficult. The world of modelling is very competitive and it's hard for young women to hold a standard of what is a realistic body image. We would show up at a "cattle call" better known as a casting and there would be hundreds of girls sizing each other up. All would be talking about who's done what and worked for who. Trying to psychologically damage the others. The designers would make a standard size 2, so if you didn't fit...they didn't CARE! Your only choice was to find a way to fit into that size 2 or go home. I remember flying into Italy overnight, and we hadn't slept. They drove us straight to the agency where they didn't even say hello...they just pulled out the measuring tape before we even filled out our paperwork. It wasn't all bad though. I did work in Milan, Athens, Asian markets and got paid to travel the world. All before I turned 20! Jason Setnyk: What are your opinions on body image in women fashion and fitness and being role models to young girls?
Tressia Murphy: I think there have been alot more attempts over the last couple of years to portray "healthier" looking women as role models, but there is still alot of work to be done. There are almost as many fitness magazines on a newsstand as there are glamour and fashion. But it's so hard for young women to find their place. I think as long as there is fashion there will be waifs. But it is "our" responsibility as a society to teach our young girls at an early age about proper nutrition and healthier living. Educate them early on, and it will stick with them forever. Jason Setnyk: Can you share some of your experiences working on movies and television? Tressia Murphy: I've worked on quite a few cool sets over the years too! Snake Eyes was great! I got to work with Nicholas Cage and Gary Sinease. That's the kind of acting that can't be taught in drama class. I also got to work on the set of Fox's Prison Break. That was a totally different experience from film. Most of the cast was like family. They had been working together for so long, and everybody was very warm and welcoming. I also had the opportunity of modeling on live tv for a few years, which was an incredible experience. You never knew who would be walking the halls at 3am. I've been half asleep and walked into the dressing room to find Dr Ray 90210 ironing his shirt, and bumped into Tony Little and Wolfgang Puck in the make-up room. Jason Setnyk: How have these experiences impacted your life?

I hope that you all had an amazing Easter week-end. What beautiful weather that came along with it…just awesome!!! I recently had the pleasure of visiting, an amazing, local, organic produce farm. I actually got to sample some winter spinach fresh from the ground and mustard greens…so delicious…nothing like I’ve ever tasted. They also run a “Community Supported Agriculture Program” (CSA), which consists of a box of freshly picked vegetables, herbs and specialty salad greens (June to October). This service is available to residents of Morrisburg, Ingleside, Long Sault and Cornwall. We have to support our local organic growers…freshly delivered to our community …Does it get any better than this??? Speaking of fresh greens, here is an amazing kale chip recipe. DIRECTIONS -Heat your oven to 300 degrees -Remove the kale leaves from the middle stem -Place all the leaves into a large mixing bowl -Melt the 2 Tbsp. of coconut oil, until liquefied -Pour the oil over the kale leaves and mix until well combined -Lay the kale leaves flat on a baking sheet -Salt to taste -Bake for 35 minutes! Some of the recipes were a lot easier than I thought they would be, and the food was really fresh and tasted good. I like knowing that I am feeding my family fresh food that tastes good! Getting my friends and family involved was great, because we can support each other on our quest for healthy eating. Cheers!” Monique **Don’t forget that I will be a guest speaker at the local “Celiac Support Group” on Wednesday, April 18th from 7 to 9 pm. FREE OF CHARGE. Tressia Murphy: Overall my life has been filled with an abundance of adventures, and a million learning experiences from it all. I am happy to have done a complete lifestyle transformation, and I can only hope that my change can inspire at least one person to say if she can do it, then so can I. I am proud that I am turning 37 years old this year. At one point in my life I never told anyone my age. I don't believe in trying to fight it anymore...I am embracing it, and by my actions, I am hoping to set an example for others to do so as well. "Healthy" doesn't mean just eating right, or working out 7 days a week. It is a lifestyle, and it begins from the inside and works it way out! Jason Setnyk: Thank you Tressia for this interview, and I and the Local Seeker Staff wish you the best of success at the Winnipeg Competition!!!

Here are some ideas you may want to put to work: Get rid of clutter. You probably don’t have to look too far around your home to find things that are broken or simply no longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio, you might make similar discoveries: an investment that has chronically underperformed, duplicates another investment or met your needs in the past but is less relevant to your current situation and goals. Once you identify these types of investments, you may decide to sell them and use the proceeds to take advantage of opportunities that may prove more valuable to you.
Consolidate. Over the years, you may have accumulated multiple versions of common household items — brooms, mops, hammers — which pop up mysteriously in various parts of your home. You might find it more efficient, and even less expensive, if you consolidated all these things in one centralized location. As an investor, you also might find that consolidation can offer you some benefits. Do you have one Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) with one financial services provider and a second RRSP with another? Have you scattered investments here, there and everywhere? By consolidating all these accounts in one place, you can cut down on paperwork, reduce fees and, most importantly, unite your investment dollars so that it’s easier for you to see what you have and then follow a single, coherent investment strategy. Prepare for turbulent weather. As you know, springtime can bring heavy rains, hail, strong winds and other threats to your home. As part of your overall spring cleaning, you may want to check the condition of your roof, clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters and downspouts, and take other steps to protect your property from the ravages of Mother Nature. And just as you need to safeguard your home, you’ll want to protect the lifestyles of those who live in that home — namely, your family. You can help accomplish this by reviewing your life and disability insurance to make sure it’s still sufficient for your needs. Get professional help. You may find that you can’t do all your spring cleaning by yourself. For example, if your carpets and rugs are heavily soiled, you may need to call in a professional cleaner. Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might need to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to “tidy up” your portfolio, you’ll need some assistance from a financial professional — someone who can study your current mix of investments and recommend changes, as needed, to help ensure your holdings are suitable for your risk tolerance, time horizon and short- and long-term goals. Spring cleaning can reinvigorate your home and your overall outlook. And by tidying up your investment portfolio, you can help gain some of that same optimism — for your future.

THE LOCAL SEEKER (April 13 - pg. 6)
“ About The House”
Springtime is almost here. If you’re like many people, the arrival of spring means it’s time to spruce up your home. But why stop there? This year, consider applying some of those same spring-cleaning techniques to your investment portfolio.
Dear Joe, I want to replace my out of style ‘90s green countertop with something a bit more stylish. I was hoping to upgrade to something more durable than laminate but cost is an issue. Also my backsplash is tiled and was wondering the best/cheapest way to renew that too without the cost of tearing out the whole back wall and redoing it from scratch. Any suggestions would be great. Thank You. Liz. Well Liz. Thank you for the great question. Just replacing your countertop can give the entire kitchen a new lease on life. I would also suggest freshening up your paint colour while you’re at it, with a colour that complements your new counter. Well, if you’re budget conscious, you won’t beat laminates for style, and affordability. There are some gorgeous patterns being put out now which look like the most expensive natural stone tops at a fraction of the cost. I would definitely suggest going that way. You can liven up a plain laminate countertop with a solid wood or corian edge colored to compliment the rest of your kitchen. As far as cost goes, expect to spend a minimum of five times the cost of laminate for any natural stone, engineered stone, quartz, concrete, and solid hardwood. These are premium finishes which, and there’s no getting around it, carry a premium price, But having said that, there are deals to be had for the most careful shoppers. One way you can have the benefits of real stone is to install a stone tile in the place of your current counter. Simply remove the old counter, install a sheet of ¾ “ plywood and glue down your granite marble or slate tile. A nice small grout line works best, and now you have a real stone countertop at about a quarter of the cost. It won’t fool anyone into believing you dropped a fortune on the real thing, but you will get the look and all the benefits of working on a real stone work surface.
On your backsplash you have a couple of choices to hide the dated tile without the costly ripout. You can tile over any previously tiled surface provided it is sound and clean. Make sure you install the appropriate tile edge to finish it off. You can also paint the tile if you use a bonding primer which will adhere to the glaze and allow you cover it with the paint of your choice. Embossed tin, steel, or plastic panels can be glued right over top to add some old world charm on a shoe string budget. Good luck freshening up your kitchen for spring. What a great project.Joe And thank you to everyone who contributed this week. If I didn't answer your question, keep on thank you to everyone who contributed this week . A pretty big event came to Cornwall last week: the 2012 Women's Continental Boxing Championships at the NAV CENTRE. I was fortunate enough to win 2 weekly passes to the event, courtesy of the City of Cornwall, in a contest they ran on their facebook page. I wish I could have attended in person, but since it was short notice and I had to work, I sent extensions of me, my husband John and my son Khyle, to cover the event. They enjoyed fights between Argentina and USA, Canada and Mexico and Dominican Republic and Brazil among others.
AUCTION For me, Good Friday is synonym of Auction Day. Every year, on Good Friday, Theresa Taylor Auctioneering puts on a heck of a sale for antiques and collectibles. I run the online part of the auction where people can bid from the comfort of their own home as if they were right there, on site. Every year, I see amazing deals go by, deals that are sometimes too much for me to pass on. A couple of years ago, I purchased an amazing 1843 dining room set that belonged to the Purcell family for a mere $100. This year, I purchased a 1960's complete bedroom set for $20. You never know what bargains await you at the auction. You should try it sometime! The next auction will take place on labour day week-end. Visit http:///theresataylor.com for info.
MARKETING BOOSTER PROGRAM Wednesday, I attended the last of three interactive workshops offering full coverage of marketing topics specially focused for the small business entrepreneur. The "Marketing Booster Program", offered by the BDC was filled with relevant information and resources to help individuals take their business to the next level. It touched subjects such as Competition, E-Business and Managing your Sales Team. The message was well delivered, allowed ample time for discussion, questions and comments and an extensive binder was provided for future reference. A must for any small business to attend. How Losing Everything Gave Me All I Ever Needed Part 1
BOXING
The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open. Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters Ten years ago, if you had told me one day I would be a freelance journalist and musician, I would have told you that you were out of your mind. If you had traveled through time and predicted all I was about to endure, I would not have believed you, not for an instant. Yet, here I am. In six years of my fairly short existence, I managed to pack in infertility, infidelity, post-traumatic stress, separation and divorce, job change, job loss, moving- twice, and cancer- twice. Apparently, I like to do things in twos. My therapist said I experienced five of the seven most stressful life experiences in a five-year period and that it was a wonder I hadn’t experienced a breakdown. I did an online quiz and it told me I should be dead. Maybe I did have a breakdown and I don’t remember. Maybe my family was kind enough to whisk me away to one of those remote sanitarium places you see in the old black and white movies and had them do some weird procedure involving flashing lights and barking dogs to have my memory made a blank slate. What I do remember, however, is wondering how I was ever going to make it out alive. I remember wondering what on earth I had done in a previous life to tick off the universe so much that I deserved this unrelenting punishment.
It wasn’t so much all that I went through, but the pace at which I was thrown into each challenge. It felt that as soon as I managed to pick myself up, something else would beat me to the ground. I found myself begging for mercy, day after day. Why? I would cry. Why is all this happening to me? What have I done to deserve this? Someone please give me a break!
Then one day after a doctor’s appointment, while strolling through my favourite bookstore, I found it. There it was, sitting so unassumingly on the shelf in the self-help section. I picked it up and skimmed right over the title. It was the subtitle that caught my eye. ‘Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life.’ Promise? I flipped it over, looking for a money-back guarantee. I needed change. Fast. I had been feeling like a victim of some bad cosmic joke, and I wanted it all to just stop. The spiritual side of me knew that there had to be something more to all of this. There had to be a reason that all of this was happening to me. to be continued….. Sara Murphy is a freelance journalist, musician, cancer survivor, community cheerleader and mom.

stewing beef which is just wonderful. Support a local farmer, buy locally!
REALLY GOOD BEEF STEW 4 lb. of my store's locally raised, lean stewing beef 1 cup of flour seasoned with 1 tsp. Kosher salt and 1 tsp. ground black pepper 2 tbsp. canola oil and 2 tbsp. butter, add more if necessary 2 large Spanish onions, diced 4 ribs of celery, sliced or diced 2- 1/2 lb. of carrots, peeled and sliced 1 lb. of parsnips, peeled and sliced 1 turnip or rutabaga, peeled and diced 4 potatoes, peeled, and cut into 1- 1/2 " pieces 1/2 cup of Sharyn's Pantry, No salt or MSG French onion soup base to taste: 1 tsp. Kosher salt and 1 tsp. ground black pepper METHOD;
-Heat the oil and butter in a large, heavy bottomed, Dutch oven or large stock pot. -Shake the stewing beef into the seasoned flour, and begin to saute until brown on all sides, small batches of the stewing beef. Remove the cooked beef to a bowl and add more seasoned, floured beef into the hot oil and butter. I probably cooked about 6 batches of the stewing beef, not over-crowding it as it browned. Don't rush a stew, slow down and
enjoy the process. -As the beef is browned, continue to saute and brown all the remaining beef, cooking it in small batches to enable the meat to get a sear on all sides. If you don't do this, the meat will get tough as it cooks in the stew. Scrape up any brown bits that stick on the bottom of the pot, this is FLAVOUR, and you don't want to waste a bit of it. -You may need to add a bit more oil and butter as needed. -Once all of the meat has been browned on all sides, return all of the beef to the pot. -As the batches of beef are browning, peel and slice or chop all of the veggies. -Add all of the vegetables, no salt or MSG French onion soup base and the salt and pepper. -Add enough water to just cover the veggies and meat in the pot. -I allowed the stew to slowly simmer for about 4 hours, stirring every now and then to prevent any sticking on the bottom of the pot. -Thicken the stew with 4 tbsp. of flour mixed to a smooth paste with about 1/4 cup of cold water,. Cook the stew for several minutes longer until the gravy is thickened to your liking.
-Now at this point, you could simply serve this tasty beef stew, as is with a nice helping or fluffy mashed potatoes, for a lovely meal. But, if you want to make a flaky pie crust to place over top of the stew, here's my fool-proof recipe for the best pastry ever:
THE BEST PASTRY EVER; Extra pastry can be wrapped in plastic wrap and placed into ziploc bags and frozen for later use, or you can roll out the pastry, line pie plates with it for a bottom crust, wrap well and freeze for later use. This saves a great deal of work later on when you need some pastry. Plan ahead for far less work later on. HINT: For the most tender and flaky pastry, use pastry flour, which is low in gluten and far more tender than all purpose flour. We sell this at my store, Sharyn's Pantry, either bleached or unbleached, both are good. Try some and see the difference in your pastry. I also use a pastry cloth and rolling pin cover to roll out my pastry on. Less flour will go into the pastry, keeping the pastry way more flaky and tender. We carry these re-usable, washable items. 6 cups pastry flour (this is not cake

and pastry flour, it is only pastry flour, there is a difference) 2 tbsp. white sugar 1 tsp. fine salt 1 level tsp. baking powder 1 lb. Tenderflake lard 1/3 cup cold butter in a liquid measuring cup: 1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp. white vinegar add enough cold water to measure a total of 1 cup in volume
METHOD; -Place the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. -I use a whisk to mix and blend these ingredients together. -Use a pastry blender to cut in the lard and butter, until they resemble small and large peas in size. you can have a few pieces a bit larger, that's OK. -Slowly, mix in the water, vinegar and beaten egg mixture into the flour and lard mixture. You may need to add just a bit more cold water. You must be able to squeeze a piece of dough together and have it stick together and not crumble. On the other hand, you don't want it to be too wet either, just enough to hold together. -Unroll the pastry cloth, flour it lightly and take enough pastry to roll out and fit the top of the casserole you will be using for your beef stew. -Cover your rolling pin with the cover, flour it lightly and begin to roll out the pastry to fit over the beef stew casserole. Roll the pastry to a bit less than 1/4 " thick. -Place the pastry over top of the casserole. You can brush the top of it with an egg wash; a mixture of 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp. of water beaten in to it. -Place this in a pre-heated 425 degree F. oven and bake on the second rack from the bottom of your oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until the pastry is browned to your liking. -Remove the casserole from the oven and serve. Serves 6 easily. ENJOY!

He leans over and asks his neighbor if someone will be sitting there. "No," says the neighbor. "The seat is empty." "This is incredible", said the man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs and not use it?" The neighbor says "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Stanley Cup we haven't been to together since we got married in 1967." "Oh ... I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?" The man shakes his head "No, they're all at the funeral."

ART SEEKERS by Sandra Taylor Hedges
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS Through the Artist Eyes Ever since I have been teaching people the ins and outs of painting or making art in general I have noticed a phenomenon that happens to each new painter, they grow new eyes! Oh you can’t see it happening in a literal sense but deep inside the brain the eyes learn to look at the world in a new and exciting way. It starts with their first class where they sit with the paint colours on one side and their photo they want to paint on the other staring ahead at a blank white canvas. With all the equipment sorted out they begin to paint. Trees are green, so is grass and the sky is blue and so they begin until I walk up to them and gently take them over to the window and show them that trees are not just green but they are yellow, red and a touch of dark purple even in the middle of summer. The grass is blue green, yellow green and brown. The sky is never the same for very long and it’s moods are as changeable as the weather; is it light blue or grey blue or brilliant deep blue? Clouds are never white at least completely there are many colours in clouds as well as unique shapes. They squint and tilt their head and say I don’t see it, but that is on day one. Over the next few weeks they will come into the studio so excited about how they know what I mean about clouds and the sky; yes they can see all the colours in the trees and grass and did I know there is just as many different colours of tree trucks? Their world as they knew it has changed they have learned to see with an Artist’s Eyes.
The same thing happens when someone starts to learn about music, they grow new ears as they learn to notice the difference in tempo and rhythm. Soon it is no longer just sound but a rich melody. A person learning to act becomes a student of body language and develops a new face and voice. They learn that through the movement of their face and the tone of the voice the viewer knows if they are happy, sad or mad.

It is said that the average person only uses 10% of their brain. Perhaps the Creator of all things gave us the other 90% to be able to see, hear, sing, speak and write about the wondrous world around us and the Universe it is tucked away in.
York, Pennsylvania in 1958. Leo and Jack, who are two down on their luck Shakespearean actors playing the Moose Lodge circuit. Leo reads in the paper that a wealthy old lady is on her death bed. She is going to leave her fortune to her two long lost nephews. Jack and Leo decide to pass themselves off as her nephews, only to discover that the nephews are really nieces. Complications begin when Leo falls in love with Meg, who is engaged to the local minister. Pandemonium begins, and hilarity ensues.
As a Visual Artist I sometimes take for granted that everyone sees they way I do, the way I always have but when I hear the excitement in a new artist’s voice I am reminded how unfortunate it is that our Society and Education system is geared only to tell us things we need to remember about the world around us but fails to teach us how to see it, feel it and sing about it!

celebration of sacred and popular music based on The Book of Psalms This year’s CHORUS NOVUS spring concert will celebrate choral music inspired by the Book of Psalms. The concert program was designed to move and delight audiences, as well as to enlighten them about the use of psalms throughout history. The concert will take place on Sunday April 22nd, 7pm, at Trinity Anglican Church in Cornwall. Everyone welcome! The Psalms are a collection of 150 very early hymns and prayers, written over a thousand-year period and common to many faith traditions. They are included in Hebrew and Christian bibles as well as the Islamic Book of David. The Psalms were originally intended to teach, explain, encourage and communicate. CHORUS NOVUS director Brian Hubelit explains why he planned an entire concert around the Psalms, “I believe that the Psalms represent one of our planet's greatest artistic and spiritual heritages. There is a psalm about almost every situation in our human lives-psalms that rejoice, celebrate, praise god, lament, threaten, commiserate-the Psalms are a remarkable collection of human stories, some sad, others bursting with joy.” Psalms have served as inspiration to composers throughout the ages, resulting in a large and very diverse repertoire of choral music. Hubelit wants the audience to experience as many of these musical and poetic settings as possible during the spring concert. The program includes a wide variety of sacred and popular music inspired by the Psalms, in several languages. Choir members Felicity Brown, Éliette Campeau and Colleen Fitzpatrick will perform soprano solos. Rosemary Brown and special guest Miguel Young will accompany the choir. The audience is invited to join CHORUS NOVUS for a reception in Trinity church hall following the concert. Tickets, $15 (free for age 16 and under), are available at Seaway Valley Tourism, 11 Water Street West, Cornwall. Tickets are also available at the door and from choir members. CHORUS NOVUS is a Cornwall-based ecumenical choir that performs traditional and modern sacred music, under the direction of Brian Hubelit.

Listen to The Psalms - A CHORUS NOVUS
View from the Passenger Side Sometimes you just have to be impulsive and go with it. I was all settled to spend the majority of the Easter weekend break working on the house and continue my decluttering and new page plans; until I got a phone call. It was my older sister Lisa asking me if I wanted to go with her to pick up my niece in North Bay for Easter. We’d leave the next morning on Good Friday and return later Saturday night. Roadtrip with my sister! Brad was invited to join us, but he already had plans, besides, this is something I have never done. Sure, I’ve taken trips with my sister before, but not just the two of us. It gave her company, and me a chance to travel to a location I have never been. We headed out the next morning, knowing we would spend the majority of the time in her van. I climbed in with minimal items, just what was needed for the next 36 hours. It was a cool crisp morning and the sun was shining brightly, so I donned my sunglasses, settled comfortably in my seat, and looked forward to enjoying the view from the passenger side, for once.
I am typically the driver, and don’t often get the freedom that comes from being seated in the passenger side. On those rare occasions when I am not the driver, I soak up the atmosphere and notice things I don’t usually see. As the driver you are focused so much on the road and avoiding any possible distractions, but when you are not the driver, you can gaze around and discover the beauty of your surroundings. As we made our way, we talked about everything and anything. We communicate frequently, but she was my captive audience, and so I was able to chat freely. We felt bad that our younger sister couldn’t join us, but she has two young children at home so it was not feasible this time. We took frequent brakes, and for the first time I activated 4squares so that people could see where we are. I “checked in”, to capture our trip. It was fairly uneventful, we left at 10am and arrived around 5pm. My niece was working as part of her practical work in college, so we checked into the motel and waited for her call. A few hours later, we picked her up at the college residence. With Brad going away in the fall, I got a few ideas for his residence. Lisa and Emily had some smart storage and organization ideas. We chatted throughout the trip, went back to the Hilton, and rested up for the drive back. After a hearty breakfast, we were back on the road. Emily took over as the driver part way back and I moved to the backseat, but still enjoyed the passenger side. We listened to Em’s Ipod on the way back, and she was probably shocked that I knew most of the music on her player. Some were remixes I hadn’t heard, but knew all the words to. As the last few hours of the trip drew upon us, I was glad I took the trip. No I didn’t get much done last weekend, came home to the vacuum cleaner visible in the living room, since Brad made an effort in my absence; but it was a refreshing change and a great way to spend Easter weekend. We got together at my parents’ place on Easter Sunday and had a pleasant time recounting our roadtrip. My older sister said the highlight of my trip was meeting the Australian who’s accent was enchanting. We only spoke to him on our way to the car, but having incredible powers of observation and excellent memory skills, I could describe him perfectly. My sister is convinced that if I could draw like my son, I could be a police sketch artist, how did I get that description in under a minute? The trip was memorable, it will stand out as a time I spent with my big sis Lisa. I always looked up to her and as the years slide away, I am glad we had this time to spend together, reflect on times past and look forward to the future. As for my time in the passenger side, I hope to do this more. Sure it is fun to be in the driver’s seat, but sometimes life in the passenger seat gives you more clarity.

JOB TIPS with John
EMPLOYMENT SEEKER Social Media and the Job Hunt When it comes to Social Media we immediately think of more entertainment focused sites like Facebook and Pinterest. What a lot of job hunters don’t know is how relevant various Social Media platforms can be in the employment hunting process. Indeed, a well rounded job search needs to incorporate a concerted and dedicated social media strategy.
LinkedIn (www.LinkedIn.com) is fast becoming not only a necessary job search tool but it is the perfect online networking platform. Think Facebook for business. Perhaps the easiest way to describe LinkedIn is as an online résumé with a built in capability allowing users to join industry and interest specific groups. Members can then post messages to other group followers and receive regular summaries of recent posts. Where hard or soft copy résumés are suggested to be no longer than 2 to 3 pages, you can fill your LinkedIn profile with a plethora of added details about past experience and education, interests and even books you are reading. Colleagues, business associates or clients can even add recommendations to your profile. Recruiters have long seen the value of LinkedIn as a search tool and I doubt that many candidate searches begin without looking at LinkedIn as a primary step. Joining LinkedIn is free and while there is an option to pay a monthly fee for expanded access to various services, the basic membership can serve you well. Once you have joined and created your profile, be sure to add your LinkedIn address to the contact details section of your hard and soft copy résumé. This morning I received my weekly update from ‘Ex Canadian Forces,’ one of the LinkedIn groups I’m a member of. Another member posted a message yesterday indicating that he just retired from the Forces as a Logistics Officer and is seeking civilian employment in the same field in or near the Ottawa region. I immediately contacted him, asked for his résumé and told him a colleague in Ottawa is frequently looking for Logistics and Distribution professionals for clients she works for. Within minutes we were communicating via email and shortly thereafter I forwarded his résumé on for him. We’ll have to see what happens but very quickly, through the networking capabilities of LinkedIn, his résumé was in the hands of a recruitment specialist working within the industry and city he is interested in. It’s hard to watch television today and not see a presenter’s caption include a Twitter handle. Normally it is their name preceded by the @ sign. Most people tend to think, and with good reason, that Twitter.com is an online micro-blog allowing users to promote themselves in 140 characters or less or to tell the world where they are eating lunch! In many instances this is true. Recent experience however is showing that Twitter is fast becoming a popular job and candidate search resource. From a job seeker’s perspective what is interesting is both the Profile users create and the use of hashtags (#) placed before certain key words in Twitter updates. Recruiters are becoming increasingly proficient in searching for candidates within Twitter and will sift through Profiles and launch searches for various keywords relevant to the position they are hiring for. If you hashtag #Engineer in a tweet for example there is a possibility it will show up in the results of a recruiter’s search for an #Engineer. Like LinkedIn, Twitter is completely free and affords you not only the opportunity to promote yourself but it gives you the ability to follow a number of other users including corporate and agency recruiters posting openings they have. Clearly job hunting today poses unique challenges and is not what it used to be. There is still a lot to be said for pounding the pavement and dropping résumés off but there is most definitely a shift occurring. Becoming familiar with how Social Media can enhance our job seeking efforts does take a little time but it is time well spent. Recruiters are spending more and more time in this ‘space’ and meeting them here can save a lot of pavement time. View my LinkedIn profile at http://ca.LinkedIn.com/pub/john-parsonsma/11/a00/760 and be sure to follow my Twitter account at @johnaparsons to get an idea of what these two platforms are all about. I look forward to connecting with you there.

SEEKING SPORTS NEWS
This past weekend finally marked the end of the off-season, as Brockville Speedway put their 2011 season to rest with their annual awards banquet. 358 Modified champion Danny O’Brien, Sportsman champion Chris Herbison, Street Stock champ Kevin Fetterly Jr. Rookie champion Jean Marc Larose and Vintage champion Wayne Riddell were the top the class in their respective division and were honored for their great seasons along with the rest of the top finishers in each division. I always enjoy the banquets for the local tracks, but I am ready get on with the 2012 racing season. Other tracks in New York State just opened this past weekend, and with more tracks in Northern and Central New York opening this weekend or next weekend, I am ready to get going.
The first on track action of 2012 will take place this weekend at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park as they host an open practice session for all divisions on both Saturday and Sunday. While it is not the same as an actual race, practice is a great opportunity to check out the new cars and new drivers for the coming season. Can Am is set to open on Saturday, April 21st for their season opener.
Brockville Speedway also has their first annual Brockville Speedway Fan Fair this coming Saturday at Home Hardware in Brockville. Most of the top five drivers in the Modified and Sportsman division will be on hand to sign autographs, visit with the race fans, and show off their 2012 cars. Danny, O’Brien, Stephane Lafrance, Matt Billings, Tim O’Brien and Bobby Herrington have all confirmed that they will be there, as well as Chris Herbison, Dylan Evoy and Dana Aikins. Brockville Speedway Fan Fair goes from 10am to 2pm. As mentioned, some tracks have already opened, as Glen Ridge Speedway, Fonda Speedway and Canandaigua Speedway all opened this past weekend. Glen Ridge is located just a couple miles from Fonda Speedway, just off the New York State Thruway just west of Albany, New York. Stewart Friesen, from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario Canada won the Modified feature over Billy Decker and Bobby Varin. Mike Mahaney won the main event at Fonda Speedway, as he outlasted Fonda regulars Matt Delorenzo and Jimmy Davis.
While I was at the Brockville Speedway banquet, I followed along with the twitter updates from Canandaigua Speedway, as several Finish Line Web Design clients were participating in their season opening festivities, which also happened to be the first race in the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series. Alan Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Billy Dunn were all competing in the series race, while Jessica Power was making her first ever appearance at Canandaigua in the Sportsman division. It was Danny Johnson taking the series opening win over Brett Hearn, Justin Haers, Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps. Alan Johnson finished 10th, Billy Dunn had a flat tire midway through the race and finished 15th while Gary Tomkins has some issues with his brand new car in hot laps, and was a scratch for the night. Jessica Power got off to a great start, finishing 3rd in her heat race. She started the feature from 10th, and finished 17th. Finish Line Web Design is proud to announce the unveiling of a brand new website for Joyceville, Ontario racer April Wilson. Check out www.aprilwilsonracing.com for updated stats, information, news, results and other pertinent information regarding April Wilson and her Sprint Car racing team. I am happy to report that from now until November, my weekends will be spent at the racetrack. It has been a long winter, and I can’t wait to get back to the track this coming weekend. For live raceday reports from the track, follow Finish Line Web Design on twitter @finishlineweb17, Facebook at facebook.com/finishlinewwb17 or at our website, finishlinewebdesign.ca. I look forward to seeing everyone at the track in just another week. I hope you continue to enjoy my weekly column, as always, any comments or suggestions can be sent to crevelle@ripnet.com
The Seeker Chicks welcome Rodney Wilson and his Sports Column to our Team of writers - you wanted more sports - here it is ... NHL PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS It’s my favourite time of the year – the NHL playoffs. Many die-hard hockey fans will spend more time with the CBC’s Ron MacLean and TSN’s James Duthie over the next two months than they will with their own family! Sixteen teams will battle it out over the next eight gruelling weeks and in June; one team will be crowned Stanley Cup champions. Unlike recent seasons, the East is just as strong as the West – with powerhouses such as the defending champion Boston Bruins, Crosby and Malkin’s Pittsburgh Penguins and the top-seeded New York Rangers. There isn’t much to cheer for if you are a Canadian team. But, the Vancouver Canucks could be poised to get back to the final and avenge their Game 7 loss a year ago to the Bruins. The Ottawa Senators are the only other Canadian club in the playoffs and they’ll be in tough against Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers in Round 1. Still, the Sens are confident having won 3-of-4 regular season contests against New York. Here are my predictions:
EASTERN CONFERENCE: New York Rangers (1) vs. Ottawa Senators (8): Even with the addition of Brad Richards this year, the Rangers continue to struggle offensively. But, with Henrik Lundqvist having an MVP-type season in goal, the blue shirts won a league-best 51 games. Ottawa, which actually won the season series 3-1, wasn’t even supposed to be in the post-season but they’ll get a few bonus games for their fans. RANGERS IN SIX Boston Bruins (2) vs. Washington Capitals (7): The defending champs have had their ups and downs this season, but finished strong, going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Caps survived a coaching change and horrible seasons by snipers Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin. Zdeno Chara will be able to shut down the Caps snipers and Boston has too much depth up front. BRUINS IN SIX Florida Panthers (3) vs. New Jersey Devils (6): Florida and New Jersey finished 15th and 11th in the East last year, respectively. Both had surprising seasons. The Devils won their last six regular season games to finish with 102 points. Not bad for a No. 6 seed. The Panthers, meanwhile, had the worst goals for/goals against differential among the 16 playoff teams this season (-24). DEVILS IN SIX
Pittsburgh Penguins (4) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (5): The marquee matchup in the first round. It’s a shame that one of these two teams won’t be around for Round 2. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will have to be out of this world to slow down the high-flying Pens offence. This series could get nasty. The Flyers are one of the leagues most penalized teams, while the Pens have some of the dirtiest players in the league, according to the Flyers coaching staff. PENGUINS IN SEVEN WESTERN CONFERENCE: Vancouver Canucks (1) vs. Los Angeles Kings (8): The Canucks had their scoring problems in their last playoff series vs. Boston in the final. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick won’t make Vancouver’s life any easier. Quick was among the best in goal this season with a 1.95 GAA. But, Los Angeles does struggle themselves at putting the puck in the net – even with the talent that they have up front. But, this post-season is all about redemption for Roberto Luongo and this could be best matchup possible for him. CANUCKS IN SIX St. Louis Blues (2) vs. San Jose Sharks (7): This should be a great series. The Sharks got close last year but could have easily been on the outside looking in this season in the West. Anti Niemi has been inconsistent this season, but this is the time of year that he shines. Still, San Jose is up against Ken Hitchcock’s well-coached Blues; Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott combined for 15 shutouts this season. BLUES IN SEVEN Phoenix Coyotes (3) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (6): Two red-hot teams collide here. The Coyotes and Blackhawks each lost only one regulation game in their final 10 contests. Phoenix got great goaltending from Mike Smith (2.21 GAA), while Corey Crawford (2.70 GAA) has struggled with his play in the Chicago crease. Still, the Blackhawks have so much fire power with Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane. Jonathan Toews is also expected to be healthy for Chicago. BLACKHAWKS IN SIX Nashville Predators (4) vs. Detroit Red Wings (5): Like in the East, the 4 vs. 5 matchup could be the best series in the West. The Central Division rivals finished only two points apart and split the season series 3-3. Nashville was one of the more aggressive teams at the Trade Deadline acquiring Hal Gill, Paul Gaustad and Andrei Kostitsyn. They of course added Alexander Radulov from the KHL a couple of weeks ago. But, their best player continues to be big goaltender Pekka Rinne, who will have to be at his best to stop Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and the ageless Red Wings. PREDATORS IN SEVEN STANLEY CUP FINAL: Vancouver will defeat Pittsburgh in the Cup final; Luongo will get the last laugh and win the Conn Smythe (MVP).

LUCK OF THE OIL: The poor Columbus Blue Jackets have had such a rough season, they can’t even win the NHL Lottery. Instead, the Edmonton Oilers won the right to select first at this summer’s entry draft, despite only 18.8% odds. The Oilers may go ahead and use the pick, but to me, they’re better off moving this pick for a solid young defencemen and/or a goaltender, which they need badly. They should make a pitch at a young goaltender like Jonathan Bernier, who is buried behind Jonathan Quick as the Los Angeles Kings backup. Bernier, 23, was the 11th overall pick in 2006 and he has one more year on his deal at only $1.5 million. JUST CAN’T CLOSE: Newly acquired Blue Jays closer Sergio Santos is off to a rough start in Toronto. He has given up four runs in two innings of work, blowing two save opportunities already. OZZIE’S BIG MOUTH: I’ve always found the outspoken Ozzie Guillen to be quite entertaining with his rants. But this week, the Miami Marlins manager took it too far, saying he admired Fidel Castro. Guillen was suspended for five games for the comments and he has since called it the biggest mistake of his life. Guillen can continue to be opinionated and controversial, but he should stick to what he knows best – baseball. THOMAS BACK IN DC: Speaking of outspoken sports figures, Boston goaltender Tim Thomas will return to Washington as the Bruins and Capitals faceoff in the NHL playoffs. Thomas made headlines in January when he refused to visit the White House with his teammates. If Thomas can concentrate on his duties in the crease, Boston should have little trouble with the Caps. But you can bet Washington fans will be on Thomas’ case. PIPERS’S POINTS: Thankfully, we’ve had a lot of rain here locally this past week. Unless the soggy weather continues, the 40th edition of the Raisin River Canoe Race, which is to be held Sunday, April 22, might become a 35 kilometer portage race. rodwilson@gmail.com Follow me on Twitter @piperspoints or visit my website: www.piperspoints.com

LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN!
613-937-0120
Article and Photos by Jordan Filion Yet another victory for our hometown hero, Lightning Luis, who swung his fists of fury to his new victory. His strikes resulted in his opponent's thunderous falls on the ring floor. Luis shook the crowd as the growls and screams of victory echoed within the building. The fight took place at the Claude-Robillard Centre in Montreal, Quebec on April 7th. Ferenc Szabo, former UBC youth super featherweight champion, from Kiskunfelegyhaza, Hungary walked into the fight with a 14-16-2 streak, including 7 KO's. While Luis strutted into the fight with an outstanding track record, of now, 14-0, with 5 KO's, including his most recent victory in October against Alejandro Barerra. The fight proved to be promising even before it had begun.
The stands were packed and every filled seat was gleaming down at the ring. The lights pulsed as Luis ran down the walkway, throwing his Lightning fists out as a sample for his fans. From the sound of the first bell, Luis was in the fight, throwing blowing body shots backing his opponent up and causing immediate damage. Lightning Luis took a few hits in the first round, but it didn't seem to stop him. He rebounded from his opponent's strikes and struck back with blows to the body. After a quick pep talk from his father, Jorge Luis, the bell rang for the second round. "I noticed very early that my punches were hurting him so it wasn't long before I decided to start walking him down and coming forward," Luis mentioned. . Quickly noticing the pattern of Szabo's foot positioning, he took charge and swung his opponent back. Not wasting anytime, Luis took advantage of this opportunity and dropped his opponent for the first time in the second round. Lightning Luis had stolen all the momentum in the fight and his lightning fists knocked Szabo down for the final time 1:07s in the third round, after two knockdowns prior to his final drop. There was no arguing with the ref when he called the fight off due to the 3 knockdown rule. Jorge Luis (seen with his son Tony in the photo above and to the right) was quick to comment after the fight, "I'm really proud of Tony's performance. At times, he was holding his hands a little lower than I'd like to see. But he stayed calm and focused like a pro's pro". Lightning Luis is now world champion in two titles, including his new belt, and awaits his next challenge. He will never back down, and with the endless support of his reliable fan base, he is climbing the ladder to his ultimate victory.

! $ NEWS with NADA Lets start our first week off with a common question, “Why is my house not selling?” Now, this is always a difficult question to answer. The answers can vary from the decor to the location of the home.
You also, need to think about this fact, if 90% of comparable homes for sale on the market are not selling, you need your home to fit into the category of the 10% of the homes which are. How do you do that? Make your home stand out. Ways of doing this include: • Adding updates (Especially kitchens and bathrooms, this is the first place a women looks at in a home and we know women are the boss) • Doing last minute repairs which you've always planned to do, probably since you purchased the house. • Paint neutral colours • Remove bulky furniture, it makes your rooms look smaller. • Get rid of family photos. Potential buyers want to picture themselves in the home, not you. • Remove your wood moldings and replace them with new white ones. (Definitely worth it) • Have great photos and lots of them. (Buyers overlook MLS listings with only one photo, thinking there must be something wrong with the property.) • Always close your toilet lids. (Sounds silly, but true, no one likes to see inside your toilet.) • Kitchen and bathroom photos are the most important. (They are the most expensive to renovate) The most important thing you can do is ask yourself one simple question, “Why would a buyer choose my home over the comparable homes on the market?” If you can't think of 5 good reasons then your homes is most likely overpriced. If so, the best thing you can do is REDUCE THE PRICE. As simple as this may sound, it is very difficult for many people to do. You have to remember when selling your home, it is not what YOU think your home is worth, but what potential buyers believe your home to be worth. For all you Sellers out there, here is a quote by Anderson Cooper, “Everyone says buying your first home makes you feel like an adult. What no one mentions is that selling it turns you right back into a child.” Keep that in mind.
