Partir de Bon Pas Honours Volunteer's with a Banquet! Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk Saturday April 21St was the Partir de Bon Pas' Annual Volunteer Banquet at the Civic Complex. The primary prevention agency is in its eighteenth year of existence. According to event organizer Lucie Hart, "We work with children, families, and the community. We have stuff like breakfast programs, and we make it so young children like school, and do not want to drop-out later. We even have programs for preschoolers." Last month FSE took groups of families to Wiggles and Giggles, and in July they are planning a group camping trip. Last year’s camping trip had over eighty participants! EYE ON SOCIETY
More Coffee Grinds Mike Bedard says Mayor Kilger should resign! Mike Bedard was quoted in the Cornwall Free News as saying Mayor Bob Kilger should resign from City Council, in part for his handling of a closed meeting where Andre Rivette got blind-sided for an interview he gave. Bedard also cited the Mayor's poor health, and compared him to an athlete past his prime. He calls this current City Council dysfunctional and disgraceful, but he says newcomers Dupelle and Murphy are not to blame. He finished his column with an announcement that he will be running in the 2014 Municipal Election. Apology issued to Rivette! City Councilor Andre Rivette was issued an apology to treatment he received during an in-camera meeting. Mayor Kilger and City Councilor Elaine MacDonald issued public apologies to Rivette during the Council Meeting. No other City Councilors gave an apology. Colts lose Game 7 heart-breaker in Finals! The Colts, who were up 32 in the series, lost game six at home in overtime, and lost 4-3 to the Nepean Raiders last Sunday afternoon in the Central Canada Hockey League playoff final. In my eyes, Goalie Lukas Hafner was the MVP of the series. He was outstanding game after game, and kept the Colts in the series and gave them an opportunity to win. Despite not winning the championship, the Colts have had another successful season, and I would like to say “kudos” to the entire organization! Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee! Jim Brownell reminds us: A great team from the Lost Villages Historical is working on Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee Tea being held at the Township of South Stormont Community Centre, Mille Roches Road, Long Sault, on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Mark your calendar, gather a group together, and plan to join the celebration from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Admission is $8.00.
McGuinty agrees to NDP demands to protect daycare spaces and help ODSP recipients! As the budget looms, Dalton McGuinty agrees to tax the rich an extra 2% to help pay off the deficit. He met NDP demands to protect daycare spaces, and to give more support to ODSP recipients. However, HST will not be removed from home heating, and McGuinty is not interested in creating incentives for job makers in the province. I would like to congratulate Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP for making the budget a bit more fair.

You know how the old saying goes “great things always happen in three’s”, well I just have to share all of my exciting news that has happened this week! One of my main goals with my business is to give back to the community, helping in areas that touch my life in a special way. First of all I met with J a c q u i e Richards, Executive Director of the local Boys and Girls Club. I am thrilled to announce that we will be teaming up for the Club’s summer camp program to offer “Cooking in the kitchen with The Health Nut!” geared towards kids grades 1 to 6. This will be a great opportunity to show the kids how easy it is to prepare and eat healthy food. It will do wonders for their selfconfidence, working as a team and participating in a great activity where they can have fun and be creative. They will learn interesting information about healthy eating as a result. I was also very proud to offer Jacquie a cheque for the amount of $50 towards their Anti-Bullying Pink Shirt Campaign. I donated $5 towards the cause for every cooking seminar participant that purchased a t-shirt. A big thank you to all who participated! It will definitely benefit the kids in our community!
Secondly, I was a guest speaker at the local celiac support group meeting. It was great to meet people who were willing to learn how to make good, quick and delicious raw desserts in a flash. Living with food intolerance is not easy, but learning healthy alternatives can make a positive difference in their lives. It also gave me a chance to launch my glutenfree homemade goods that will be available at my booth at the Farmers’ Market this summer.
SPINAL COLUMN with Dr. Paul Poirier
Naturally Delicious ... with the Health Nut
Hello everyone… hoping you had an amazing week!!!
WHAT’S LURKING IN PROCESSED FOODS Did you know that processed foods aren't limited to items typically considered "junk" foods? Processed foods line grocery store shelves, masquerading as healthful, convenient fare. But just how nutritional is this ready-to-eat cuisine? The truth is that most processed foods contain one or several chemical ingredients that are impossible to pronounce, ingredients that sound like they belong in paint - not food. Much data has been gathered on the research about what is in processed food and its effect on the body.
Wonderful Whole Foods We chiropractors teach patients that the foundation for health is rooted in preventive care. The "chiropractic lifestyle" is a mode of living that focuses on averting disease through making conscious, wellness-focused choices. This lifestyle includes daily exercise, stress reduction and a diet made up primarily of whole - not processed foods. Not only are processed meals infused with chemicals, they're often lacking or devoid of nutritional fundamentals. Processed foods are linked to cancer, obesity and heart disease. They may also fall prey to contamination. For example, recently several manufacturers recalled processed peanut butter snacks because of potential salmonella.
Pesky Preservatives Processed foods often contain preservatives. Some of these chemicals are linked to a bolstered risk of disease. For instance, the common preservatives nitrates and nitrites are found in a variety of processed foods; lunch meats, hot dogs and cured meats, such as ham, sausage and bacon. They're linked to asthma, nausea, vomiting and headaches. They are also linked to several forms of cancer (Int J Cancer 2006;15:119).
Now, a 16 year analysis documents that nitrites also increase the risk for lung diseases, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The long term study included 71,531 individuals who had never had lung disease or asthma. The participants, who ranged in age from 38 to 63, completed a dietary questionnaire rating cured meat consumption from never to almost never, to four or more servings per week. During 16 weeks of follow up, researchers found that the amount of cured meats consumed each week directly increased the odds of lung disease among past smokers. They concluded, "cured meat consumption was positively associated with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) risk after adjustment for age, smoking and multiple cofounders"(Am J Clin Nutr 2008;87;1002-8). Other preservatives such as sulfites (sulfur dioxide, metabisulfites), which prevent peeled fruits and vegetables form browning, are also linked to allergic reactions. A general rule of thumb is: The longer the shelf life, the less healthy the food!
Ruinous Refining Processed baked goods generally contain refined, white flour. When flour is refined, the brown husk of the grain is stripped away, leaving white, refined starch. Refined starches are absorbed immediately into the bloodstream, amplifying the odds of developing obesity. Refining wheat also cleaves away most essential nutrients, such as riboflavin, magnesium, zinc, chromium, manganese and cobalt. Many processed foods tout "whole grains" in bold letters on the front of the package. But, in reality, they contain only minuscule amounts of whole grains. Look for products with the words "100% whole grain" on the front of the package. Next, investigate the ingredient list: whole wheat flour should be first on the list of ingredients and the only type of flour listed. Why all the fuss about whole grains? Whole grains retain the bran surrounding the starch, keeping essential vitamins in, and slowing the absorption into the bloodstream, dramatically slashing the risk for obesity! Dr. Paul Poirier: www.drpaulpoirier.com
Last but not least, I officially confirmed my space as a vendor at the Seaway Valley Growers’ Farmers’ Market, beginning Saturday June 2nd, at “The Brick” parking lot (Pitt St. North). It will be held every Saturday until Thanksgiving week-end from 7am to Noon, rain or shine! Come mid-July, their market will take place on Wednesday mornings as well. Come and purchase all of your great local produce and homemade natural/organic goods for the week!!! Hope to see many of you there on a regular basis….I will be waiting with a smile. On Thursday the 19th, I attended the Just Plain Pretty Trunk Sale in support of the MS Society - Cornwall Chapter. I picked up great items at a quite reasonable price. And for a good cause too! What better way to pamper yourself than with Jewelry? I purchased two pairs of earrings and a bracelet for $16. Tony Lacroix, Owner and Designer at Just Plain Pretty, creates some of the pieces and carefully selects the others. The sale boasted a wide variety of items, ranging from rings to necklaces, and earrings to bracelets. Tony also promoted some of the gourmet preserves he concocts at his second business: "Love Love Food". The event took place at Shnitzels European Flavors on Pitt Street so this was the perfect excuse --not that I need an excuse-- to stop and enjoy some of their delicacies. My hubby had a burger and I had the mussels. The food always meets and exceeds the expectations at Shnitzels. And the drinks do too! With fifteen beers on tap, vintage wines and a wide selection of vodkas, whiskies and liqueurs, one is certain to leave Shnitzels happy and satisfied. On Tuesday night, City Limits Bar and Grill was host to the Chamber of Commerce's Monthly Pub Nite. The food sampled there was simply amazing. HOT, but amazing. If you are looking for Southern fares, City Limits is the place to visit.
As usual, it was great to mix and mingle with all the entrepreneurs. I love picking other people's brains. It's good to exchange ideas and compare notes. To me, the event is not so much about pitching my business, but more about discovering people and their business. After all, I am a Seeker Chick... I need to give well deserved Kudos to Lezlie Strasser, Executive Manager, and everybody at the Chamber, for putting in place such great events every month, but even more so to Amy Malyon, Assistant Executive Manager, who has a very special gift. Amy's warmth and friendliness make every member feel utterly welcomed and valued. In a business world that can sometimes feel "cliquey" to the smaller business owner, Amy treats everybody as if they were the CEO of a fortune 500 company. That, my friends, is leadership. Have a great week! Julia, Out and About!
Answering Five Questions Can Help You Pursue Your Goals As you strive to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you may, at times, feel frustrated over events you can’t influence, such as the up-and-down movements of the financial markets. Yet there is much you can control — once you determine the answers to just five key questions.
Where am I today? Take stock of all your assets — your retirement savings and other accounts. Then do the same for your debts, such as your mortgage and any other financial obligations. On your financial journey through life, it’s essential that you know your starting point.
Where would I like to be? Once you’ve established where you are today, you’ll need to identify where you’d like to be tomorrow. How much will you need to pay for the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned? Will you be able to help pay for your children’s or grandchildren’s college education? Will you need to support any other family members? At this stage, you’ll want to write down all your goals and put a price tag on each one. Can I get there? After you’ve identified your goals, determine if they are, in fact, achievable. By considering a variety of factors — including your likely future income stream and your family situation — you should be able to determine if you can attain your goals or if you need to modify them in some way. How do I get there? Now it’s time to put a strategy into action. Specifically, you need to choose investments that can help you pursue the goals you’ve selected. Your ideal portfolio will depend on your risk tolerance and time horizon, but in general, you’ll want a diversified mix of quality investments. While diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility. As you put together your holdings, make sure you understand what you can expect from your investments. For example, growth stocks may offer the highest potential returns, but they also carry the greatest risk. On the other hand, investment-grade bonds can offer a steady income stream and, barring the default of the issuer, will repay your principal when they mature.
How can I stay on track? Once you’ve built your investment portfolio, you’ll need to review it regularly — at least once a year — to help ensure it’s still meeting your needs. After all, many things can and will change in your life, such as your family situation, your goals, your employment and your risk tolerance. To address these changes, you’ll need to adjust your portfolio over time. As you can see, answering all these questions will take both work and expertise. That’s why you may want to work with a professional advisor to help you identify your goals and create a strategy for pursuing them. In any case, though, start asking — and answering — these five key questions as soon as you can. It’s easier to reach your financial goals if you put time on your side. TRY THIS LEMON PUDDING CAKE
INGREDIENTS; 3 cups skim milk 1/2 cup butter 6 egg yolks 2 cups of white sugar, divided 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 2 lemons, using the zest and the juice of both 1/4 tsp. fine salt 6 egg whites, at room temperature (Make sure there is no yolk in them or they will not whip up into a meringue.) METHOD;
-Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. -Butter a large, deep casserole dish approximately 12" X 10 " oval baking dish. Anything close is size will do fine. This must fit into a roasting pan which you will make into a "Bain- Marie" or water bath to
bake the pudding cake in. -Whisk together the egg yolks, 1- 1/2 cups of the white sugar, the flour, salt, lemon juice and zest from the 2 lemons. -In a saucepan, scald the milk and butter. This means it is nearly at a boil with small bubbles forming around the edge of the milk in the saucepan. -Cool this slightly, then whisk it into the sugar and egg yolk mixture. -Using an electric mixer, whip the bowl of egg whites until foamy, then gradually beat in the remaining 1/2 cup of white sugar, beating until the meringue is slightly stiff and looking glossy. Don't over-whip it. -Whisk 1/3 of the meringue into the lemon pudding mixture. You want to completely incorporate this into the batter. -Now, very gently, fold in 1/3 of the
Dear Joe,I was doing the dishes this morning , like a good husband, and the faucet started to leak on me. It is a considerable leak which I don’t think was there yesterday. It’s one of the one-handle jobs and I don’t know how old it is, it was here when we bought the house. Just wondering what the best thing to do would be, fix or replace? Really appreciate your help. Sincerely, Phil Dear Phil, Thank you for the great question. Changing a faucet is one of those jobs that every homeowner should know how to do, or at least be confident enough to attempt on their own. Getting the old one off is definitely the worst part of the job.
If the faucet is more than five or six years old and sees a lot of use, chances are it will be cheaper to replace the unit with a similar new one. Things tend to be corroded and seized up after that period of time so it doesn’t really behoove you to pay a plumber two hours labour plus parts to repair what was probably a $100 faucet in the first place. A quality faucet made of cast brass will have a service life of 30-40 years, with parts that are readily serviceable when need be. The el-cheapo is disposable, just like everything else in our society, and though parts are available, the amount of effort required to change them doesn’t warrant your energy. A simple replacement of the unit, and recycling of the old one is probably the most rewarding decision. If you are fortunate enough to have a classic piece that has been in service for several decades and wish to keep it in service, it is almost certainly as simple as replacing a little rubber washer at the base of the valve. Replacing this 25 cent piece will keep you going for another ten years. Do both sides at the same time, as it’s usually the hot that goes first, and it will keep both sides operating freely. A little petroleum jelly as you reassemble will make putting it back together much easier as
meringue mixture into the pudding mixture, gently continuing folding in the remaining meringue until all is very light and fluffy. Be gentle and don't overmix. -Pour the mixture into the prepared, buttered casserole dish. Place this in the suitable sized roasting pan. -Using a kettle, pour hot water into the roasting pan so that it reaches halfway up the casserole baking dish. You are creating a very gentle way to allow the pudding to bake. The hot water will keep the cake very tender. This form of baking is called a "Bain-Marie" or water bath. -Carefully place the roast pan and casserole of pudding cake in the pre-heated oven. Allow this to bake
for about 35 to 45 minutes, of until the top is lightly browned and the top is springy when lightly touched with your fingertip. -To serve, allow to cool slightly. -If you wish to serve individual ramekins, butter each one and nearly fill with the batter. Place each into a "Bain-Marie" with hot water coming halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake them in the 350 degree F. oven for about 20 minutes. Serve indivually right in the ramekin. This is one of my absolute favourite desserts! It is also very tasty served cold and will keep for several days in your fridge. ENJOY!
well as stave off the inevitable oxidation for a while longer. When you decide to replace a fixture like this, do some research, invest in high quality units with robust parts which are preferably made of common materials. For instance, if it’s stainless steel, make sure all the components are stainless. If it’s brass, make it all brass. It’s the dielectric reaction between dissimilar metals in the presence of water that make the cheaper faucets oxidize; wear out their seals prematurely as well as making them impossible to repair when it comes time. If the faucet you’re looking at purchasing has any parts made of aluminum, cast or otherwise, put it down and choose another, better quality piece. Best of luck with your project, Joe And thank you to everyone who contributed this week. If I didn't answer your question, keep on thank you to everyone who contributed this week . Produced by Rod Robillard and Steve Rombough of TKT Studios, 'NOW PLAYING' is a CD that takes advantage of just what this city has to offer. From the cover shot, to the photography, production, printing, and duplication, this CD is done completely ' in house'.

Art and Censorship There is one threat to an Artist that can stop freedom of speech - considering that art is a form of free speech that speaks both verbally and visually and that threat is censorship. You may want to argue that some form of censorship is necessary to protect certain individuals within our society, but be careful, this is a slippery slope. For the most part artists are story tellers. It doesn’t matter whether you are a writer, actor, musician or visual artist. For the most part we tell stories about the world around us. Sometimes the stories are happy and beautiful, but there are times when the story is ugly and sad. The problem with censorship is that it decides the how and sometimes even the when of the story you are telling based on their own set of criteria, or the criteria of the government in general. This doesn’t mean I think that anything we call art should be viewed by the general public. There are after all some so-called art forms that involve the violation of another human being’s rights - whether they are children or adults - that need to be scrutinized, but these are extreme situations. I am talking about my right as an artist to show the way the world is according to my personal and political views; the right to show my art where the message is relevant, depending on the sensitivity of the subject and the audience, which sometimes may not be pretty.
We the artists of the world have a greater responsibility to tell the truth, certainly the truth in our opinion, but that in itself is the reason we make our art: to invoke dialogue on issues that others are too afraid to look at. These subjects may be political, religious or speaking on human rights or the rights of our planet. They could even be of the individual’s personal struggles with the world around them. Whatever the topic, it is not for the government or an individual to decide whether it should be shown or heard; this is the right of the people. If we the people of the world find that something is not to our personal taste, we can walk away from what we see, hear or read. But if we the people find that there is truth no matter how ugly the truth may be to us, we have the right to see, hear or read it. This is our one true freedom. When someone else makes that decision for you, we may as well start burning books and goose-stepping down the main street. OK, I may be over exaggerating, but know this: it wasn’t too long ago that art which did not glorify the church and the religion of the people was considered selfindulgence and sinful. Political satire art is still being banned in some Middle Eastern countries, and women in some of the third world countries are still not allowed to make art. Books on freedom, liberty, and the rights of the individual were burned in Germany and Russia, as are books in some of the Southern United States; books that the Baptist Churches feel are encouraging the people to turn away from God. Why are these things still happening? It is because art is truth, and there are those who don’t want you to know the truth because it may upset the status quo. I say, let’s go upset a few people.

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS Taking Action as the CO of Your Destiny An incident occurred this week where I found myself in a downward spiral conversation with a grumbler. You may have been one at one time, have met one, or have one in your life right now. We all know the grumbler. The grumbler opts to complain, rather than do. It is obvious to others that they have the resources, the skills and the brains to be successful, yet they choose to reside in Unhappyland. My experience with grumblers is that these are not the folks you see out networking, cold-calling, emailing, and hitting the streets with their demo tapes. They prefer to sit behind the scenes, envious of those who are included. They are not willing to put in the effort required to become involved. Getting known takes effort. Influencing change takes effort. Getting involved in your community takes effort. A grumbler has discovered that much less energy is required to sit back and find fault in individuals and society rather than to try to affect some sort of change. Then, there are the doers. The doers are easy to spot. They are the ones out there promoting themselves and their art. They show up at a gig armed with a demo and contact info. They introduce themselves and are professional. They understand that, as uncomfortable as it can sometimes be, they need to advertise themselves. They call it the music business for a reason! If you are not networking, then get out there! Meet people, introduce yourself and make them aware of what you are capable of! Give people your contact info and let them know where they may go to hear or see your art. Do not let them leave a conversation without knowing what it is you are all about and how to find you!
I know that for more introverted people, this takes practice. It can be uncomfortable at first. It does get easier with time. If you identify a weakness in a system, try to find a solution. Doers don’t complain. They see a problem and work with others to find solutions. If you are not on a social network or emailing contact list, unfortunately, you will miss out. You can fight the trends, or you can try to use them to your advantage. If you find you are being forgotten, remind people. Cards, letters and small tokens of appreciation are not digital and will help keep you on people’s minds. Opportunities will not come knocking on your front door. People who know nothing about you or your craft will not be able to support and help you. Remember, you are the CO of your destiny. Get out there and start doing! JOB TIPS with John
EMPLOYMENT SEEKER Keep it Current There is a truism in the world of academia that one needs to publish or perish. Graduate and specifically post-graduate students are expected to get their name out there and not only tell the world that they are subject matter experts, but add to the general body of knowledge they are concerned with. This is accomplished through contributing to journals and periodicals and either teaching or speaking engagements.
What does this have to do with job hunting? Are there any lessons we can take from this? Most definitely. It’s all about keeping ourselves current and our skill sets and experience relevant to the job market today. A lot of us have been in the same position for the same employer for a number of years. We may have taken a lot of in-house job-specific courses, but how much of that training is transferable to other employers? We all know people who were laid off or down-sized after a lengthy career with one employer - various local examples we can point to - and suddenly forced into a position where they had to write résumés and start a job search after being out of the ‘game’ for a number of years. Hiring managers will look at résumés and in the back of their mind keep asking themselves if there is anything in them that is relevant to the job they are hiring for, even if they offer full training to learn the basics of the position. Relevancy does not necessarily mean related skills and experience, but can point to an ability to learn and take on new challenges. It is easy to become somewhat complacent in a secure job that offers a steady and reliable pay cheque. We are all guilty of this. The worst position to then find oneself in is having to scramble and upgrade and become ready for change when change suddenly hits us one Monday morning. How can we keep it current and show we can take on new challenges? Stay involved and keep up-grading skills. Be honest about skills and experiences you have and whether or not they would be transferable to another field or employer. Technology and business processes are changing with increasing rapidity. Our five, ten and or twenty-year old résumés are expected to compete in this landscape. There is an abundance of courses and training programs we can look at taking, available both on-line and in person. Many of these are free and a large number of them are offered within our own community at various government-funded agencies. There are a number of associations we can look at joining, I mentioned LinkedIn recently. LinkedIn offers dozens of associations and groups you can join and participate in. Such involvement can definitely be included in a résumé. Keep current by taking training. Join groups and associations that allow you to constantly refresh your résumés and yourselves as candidates. If we look at our résumé as a weapon in the fight for a job we really want, we need to be better armed than our opponents; i.e. other candidates. Stay current. Think of your résumé as a work in progress; something you are constantly polishing and upgrading. Don’t let it gather dust. Not only are you investing in yourself, but you are also nurturing the one thing that will get your foot in the door.

Top bodybuilding magazine connected to Cornwall Article by Sara Murphy Pictured in the front row is Domenic Mauro, VP of Operations for Muscle Insider Magazine with the Cornwall-Ottawa-Quebec Muscle Insider crew. From left to right are Jeff Lavictoire, Matt Bergeron, Kim Bergeron, Seven Zeran, Kyley Stevenson and Julius Toltesi.
“I told him I would help him anyway I could,” said Lavictoire. Muscle Insider Magazine owner Scott Welch noticed that Quebec amateur bodybuilding events and athletes were not getting the media coverage they needed. He wanted to see his rapidly-growing, young magazine expand into the untapped Quebec bodybuilding market. “We want to make sure we get photos of all of the athletes at the amateur level. We want to help amateurs get the exposure that they need…a ramp up to the big show,” said Welch. Personal trainer and second-degree black belt Julius Toltesi was one of several recruited by Welch to help promote the magazine in eastern Canada. Locals Jeff Lavictoire, Seven Zeran, as well as Matt and Kim Bergeron, are now all members of the Muscle Insider promotional team.
Today, Lavictoire is the Director of Social Affairs for Muscle Insider Magazine, “Canada’s #1 Bodybuilding Magazine.” The magazine has kept Lavictoire busy. He has attended tradeshows, competitions and events throughout Canada, representing the magazine. His responsibilities include event media coverage, interviewing and photographing the athletes, and uploading the information online. Muscle Insider Magazine is a bi-monthly glossy distributed by fitness clubs, supplement companies and health stores. It provides information on nutrition, training, supplements and events in the bodybuilding industry. The magazine features articles and advice from over 40 nutrition and bodybuilding experts from across Canada, the U.S and Great Britain. Owner Welch, who has a degree in nutrition, also writes for the magazine.
The magazine tries to be present at all of the 38 or more bodybuilding shows per year in Canada. With 17 IFBB-sanctioned shows in Ontario alone each year, keeping up with Canadian bodybuilding industry events can be challenging.
With the growing demand for instant competition results and photos, Lavictoire works hard to get information out to the magazine’s website and its 31, 725 Facebook fans.
Having some French-speaking representatives turned out to be an added bonus.
The benefits the job brings are numerous. Lavictoire credits the magazine for giving him the chance to meet many new people and develop new friendships, as well as the opportunity to travel to many different places.
“When dealing with promoters, photographers, stage marshals and athletes, it has been a huge asset having bilingual staff,” said Welch. “It has gained us a certain level of respect in Quebec.”
Lavictoire has met many competitors and celebrities alike, but he sees the highlight of his time with the magazine as the Arnold Classic in 2010.
The Canadian magazine, based out of Toronto, is run by Welch, Janet Lok and Domenic Mauro.
“We had a huge booth at the largest fitness expo in the world,” said Lavictoire. “We had two professional DJ’s spinning music all weekend long. We handed out close to 40,000 magazines that weekend.”
Cornwall resident Toltesi can now be seen at industry events, handing out magazines, as well as photographing and meeting athletes. He enjoys being surrounded by the positive people involved with the magazine. Working with Welch and the others has helped him on a personal and professional level. “I run my own personal training studio, JTFitness. Scott has helped me grow into a better personal trainer by giving me lots of pointers. I owe a huge thanks to Scott, Janet and Dominic for their help in my success,” said Toltesi. When Welch first called Jeff Lavictoire three years ago asking him to get involved with his new bodybuilding magazine venture, Cornwall native Lavictoire did not hesitate.
Welch acknowledged that having an energetic and positive younger staff that is so passionate about the fitness lifestyle has given the magazine a progressive vibe. “They really reach out to the athletes,” said Welch. “They are fun and it’s contagious.” The next major Ontario event for the Muscle Insider crew will be the Toronto Pro SuperShow in June. Canada’s premier fitness show will feature seminars and competitions, including pro and amateur bodybuilding, Crossfit and martial arts. The Muscle Insider booth will be there, staffed with some familiar Cornwall faces.

SEEKING SPORTS NEWS WRESTLING UNCENSORED with Jeremy Barnoff
Welcome everyone to yet another installment of the most controversial and entertaining piece of writing in Cornwall history; Wrestling Uncensored. For those of you who missed last week's issue, allow me to reintroduce myself. I am the single greatest professional wrestler on the Canadian independent wrestling scene today, and the current Canadian Wrestling Action Heavyweight Champion; ''The Prophet'' Jeremy Barnoff. Some of you may be scratching your heads wondering just what Canadian Wrestling Action must be, well allow me to explain. Canadian Wrestling Action or CWA is a wrestling promotion which started back in 2007, and is based out of Cornwall, Ontario. CWA has (and continues to) put on the most exciting and dynamic shows in all of eastern Ontario. I have been proud to represent this company as its champion, and plan on doing so indefinitely. However, there are those who would gain great pleasure from seeing the championship escape my grasp. This past Sunday, I saw a man who I consider one of my best friends, Sexxxy Eddy, give in to pure unadulterated greed and lust, as he threw our friendship aside in order to gain an opportunity at my championship. Eddy lost sight of the fact that there is a conspiracy brewing in the CWA locker room, which may result in both of us being excommunicated. Nevertheless, he only saw championship gold and would not listen to me until the match was over.
ENTREPRENEURS in action
To make matters worse, our match now had a special secondary enforcer whose job was to ensure that neither Eddy or I leave Cornwall in good health. That enforcer was none other than ''The Rage'' Randy Berry. Berry has been a longtime rival of mine and is clearly either blinded by the conspiracy or at the head of it. What is the conspiracy? Well, I cannot say just yet, as there are certain pieces in play that could easily cover their tracks if they know for certain that I am on to them. Randy Berry, however, is an essential piece on the metaphorical chessboard, but it remains to be seen whether he is the kingpin or merely a pawn. Now, those of you who know Berry on a personal level may think he's too much of a knuckle-headed simpleton to put together a complex conspiracy, but the real Randy Berry is a cunning and vengeful little
man capable of more than meets the eye. Berry even managed to get fans to buy into his personal line of propaganda, and has them believing that I'm the bad guy in all this. What have I done to warrant being the bad guy? I support those who support me. I fight with all my heart, to inspire those who see me to want to do this great sport of professional wrestling, and I just keep winning. This fact infuriates Randy Berry because he knows that I have a lock on the company's top spot. So what did Randy do Sunday? After attempting to cost me my title, he savagely attacked me from behind, and left not only me, but Sexxxy Eddy beaten as well. Are these the actions of a just human being...or of a jealous little Napoleon? In any event, on June 2nd, at the next CWA event, I will defend my championship against both Eddy and Randy in a triple threat match. I encourage you all to come and see me give both of my opponents a taste of the cold hard truth. I also would like to invite you back here next week for more of the same.
At half time the kids are always invited in the ring to meet the wrestlers.
New Play Service For Children Got a little bean? Does it bounce? Bouncing Beans Play Services For Children is the brainchild of Amy Alguire who recognized a need for non-competitive play classes for children aged 30 months to 7 years. Having 2 little beans of her own, a background as a Social Services worker and experience in school settings, Mrs. Alguire is well aware of the energy youngsters possess. “The idea started during a conversation with my husband as we were dining out, and I guess it just bounced from there,” she explained. “Life is so hectic that sometimes you just need an outlet that will keep your children active while you take a few moments for yourself. I felt that a non-competitive environment where they could just have fun, play and move would offer a choice for parents of youngsters.” Bouncing Beans offers just that – a 45 minute, non-competitive play class featuring different activities each week. Activities will range from sports like soccer to games like parachute play, bowling, fun with hula hoops, silly dance and even Holiday theme activities. The goal is to keep the children active for the entire 45 minutes, and ensure that they use up their energy. Sessions will run for 8 weeks beginning in June and will be held in the Pommier Room at the Benson Centre. “Mrs. Alguire is a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit”, commented Candy Pollard, Business Consultant at the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. “She has recognized the need for a service and created a business to address that need, while doing something she enjoys – being active with children. Bouncing Beans will, no doubt, become a valued service for many parents”.
For additional information, or to register your little bean, contact Amy@BouncingBeans.ca visit their Facebook Page www.Facebook.com/BouncingBeansCanada or talk to Mrs. Alguire herself at the Benson Centre May 1st or May 8th between 9am and 11am or between 6pm and 8pm.
ENTREPRENEURS IN ACTION is a new initiative by the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre to profile small to medium-sized businesses that have recently opened in Cornwall, S.D. & G. and Akwesasne. Bye Bye Bobby Lou?
Pipers Point with Rodney Wilson
PICS from last Sunday’s CWA Show ... Retribution, held at Murphy’s Inn
Roberto Luongo has possibly played his last game for the Vancouver Canucks. He's been the whipping boy in Van city for the past few years. His inconsistency and massive contract don’t jive well together. With the steady emergence of backup Corey Schneider, it seemed like only a matter of time before Bobby Lou was dealt. The Canucks losing in the first round of the playoffs will only speed up that process. Meanwhile, Rick Nash will be on his way out of Columbus this summer, as early as at the draft in June. You don’t see blockbuster 1-for-1 deals too often, but doesn't a Luongo for Nash deal make sense for both teams? The opportunity to land a sniper like Nash doesn't come around too often and the Blue Jackets could use an upgrade in goal. Steve Mason won the Calder as NHL rookie of the year in 2008-2009, after posting 33 wins and a 2.29 GAA. In the three years since, he's averaged 20 wins and a 3.16 GAA. Mason has one year left on his contract ($3.2 million) before becoming a restricted free agent. The deal makes sense financially: Luongo has $47.3 million owed to him over the next 10 years, while Nash has $47.4 million owed to him over the next 6 years. Luongo has said he would waive his no-trade clause in order to do what is best for the team. What remains to be seen is if he would do so if a fair offer came along from a lowly team like Columbus. Then, we’ll see how desperate he is to get out of Vancouver – and be a team player.
Meanwhile, there are rumours that Bobby Lou might end up in Toronto. Then again, any athlete that is available - whether it’s an NHL, MLB or NBA star is usually rumoured to be on his way to Toronto.
HEY BIG SPENDER: : It’s interesting to see how many big spending teams failed to make it into the second round of the NHL playoffs. Of the teams with the top 10 payrolls, only Philadelphia (1), Washington (2) and Los Angeles (7) remain in the hunt for Lord Stanley. On the other hand, some of the lowest spending organizations are off to Round 2, including Phoenix (22), St. Louis (23) and Nashville (24).
COYOTES UGLY DROUGHT OVER: The Coyotes won their first playoff series since moving to Phoenix in 1996, ousting the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. It took them 16 years, and they did it ironically in the first season that Winnipeg welcomed the NHL back to Manitoba. Good for their fans in Arizona, who may not have an NHL team next fall. Sexxxy Eddy
PAIR OF UFA’S PAYING OFF: Brian Elliott and Mike Smith are sure making the teams they were let go by last year look silly. Both Ottawa and Colorado didn’t want Elliott, but the St. Louis Blues signed the unrestricted free agent on July 1. He posted a 1.56 GAA this year in 38 games and will be the man in between the pipes when the Blues face Los Angeles in the second round. Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning chose not to resign Smith, who was snagged by the Phoenix Coyotes on July 1. He posted 38 wins and a 2.21 GAA in the regular season and has led the Coyotes into Round 2 vs. the Nashville Predators. While Elliott and Smith obviously have the ability, a lot of their success has to be credited to Ken Hitchcock and Dave Tippett, respectively. Their defensive systems make it a lot easier to put up those kinds of numbers. SID TAKES A PASS: Sidney Crosby’s frustrating season is officially over after he turned down an invitation to play for Canada at the World Championships. He will now focus on training for next season. It’s maddening for me to see guys like Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Toews and now Crosby turn down the opportunity to play for their country. Crosby isn’t hurt – perhaps mentally drained – so he should be there for Canada. Obviously the Worlds don’t mean as much to Canadians as they do to other countries across the pond. Meanwhile, Evgeni Malkin has been added to Russia’s roster. LUPUL BACK WITH CAREER YEAR: Max Pacioretty and Daniel Alfredsson had great comeback seasons, but Joffrey Lupul should win the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Lupul’s career almost came to an end in 2010 after two back surgeries. He also overcame a blood infection and was a point-per-game player for the Maple Leafs this season before separating his shoulder in April. COLTS COULDN’T CLOSE: The Cornwall Colts can hold their heads high, despite falling in the CCHL final for the second straight year. That was one speedy and talented Nepean squad they lost to. Raiders defencemen Ben Hutton and Ryan Johnston were the difference in the series; it seemed like they played 30 minutes each per game. Couldn't help but think that Youssef Kabbaj (who left earlier in the season for the QMJHL) would have been a difference maker for Cornwall. LNAH FINAL SET: Windsor will take on Thetford in the LNAH final, which begins Friday night. Windsor is looking to repeat as champs; it’s also their third straight final. Local hockey fans might want to keep an eye on this series, as the LNAH will be coming to Cornwall next season. PIPER’S POINTS: The 40th annual Raisin River Canoe Race was cut short by 10 km, but still went on as scheduled last weekend. Water levels were low and only 98 canoes registered for the event. It was a bumpy ride, but my partner and I were able to once again shoot the dam successfully! Planning a race around Mother Nature has to be difficult, but perhaps it shouldn’t be scheduled so far in advance. This year, all the snow melted in late March and water levels would have been ideal then. I’ve been in 4 of the last 5 events and like most participants, I wouldn’t need more than a couple weeks’ notice in order to register for the race.

It’s Playoff Time! You know it’s springtime when the hub of conversation is about the playoffs. The roar of the crowd, the nonstop action of the players on the ice, the spills, the fights, the close call, the ping as the puck hits the goal post; these are just some of the sights and sounds of hockey. Never is it more intense than during the NHL playoffs.
As I write this, the Western conference teams have determined their next dance partners, while the Eastern conference is still being determined. The excitement of the pivotal 7th game, will determine if the last Canadian team standing, The Ottawa Senators, will be in the semi-finals and eventual Stanley Cup final. This season has seen many of the games wind up in OT excitement. For the fans, this is the payoff for their dedication. The intensity mounts as they give it all they’ve got to achieve the win. As you can tell, I am a fan. Sadly, I did miss most of the regular season games this year, but that is now over and I have returned to my love of hockey. For me it started at a young age. Although I never played, I was fascinated with the game; the fastpaced excitement and the enthusiasm generated for it. I root for the Canadian teams, and although the Sens are my team, certain players resonate with me, and as they undoubtedly change teams over the course of their careers, I still cheer for them. Of the American teams, Philly is my favourite. They didn’t disappoint, offering some of the most exciting hockey playoff action this season. They are now poised for round two as they anxiously await their chance to face their next opponent. I grew up watching hockey with my dad, a true Canadiens fan. My younger sister Mel is also a fan, as are her two children, who have their own little rivalry over their favourite teams. Hockey is a very social game. While writing this, there is a long thread of comments on Facebook about best teams, and the very recent elimination of another team after an OT Game 7 win. The banter and friendly smack-talk between friends as they steadfastly support their team is part of the appeal. You can tell who the die-hard fans are; they are the ones with the bags under their eyes who can recount the action in vivid details, maybe with a hoarse voice since they were screaming and shouting as the puck passed the goal line; the unfair penalties were called and the near misses and saves that left them on the edge of their seats. Even if someone doesn’t watch in the regular season, they often gravitate toward the playoffs. There is something so Canadian about it. Look at the teams; each has several talented Canadians on their roster. This is a time where teamwork and pure desire to win, coupled with skill and speed, can be the difference between winning the game or facing defeat. It is a time when the seasoned vets are needed, as are some skillful new players. Good coaching, effective leadership and supportive fans are key ingredients to success too. This is not a time to lose their cool and take unnecessary penalties, and if they do, their remaining teammates have to step up and prevent the goal. With every game there is always disappointment in the calls made. It can tip the

Cornwall's Mikaela Beaudette vying for Miss Teen Canada crown Article by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo. Mikaela Amber Beaudette is 15 years old, a student at Holy Trinity, and she plays rugby and participates in dance. She was born in Cornwall Ontario where she grew up her entire life. Beaudette, who has some modelling experience, has become a participant at a national pageant! Mikaela Amber Beaudette has been accepted to compete at the National Level in the Miss Canada Globe Pageants 2012. As a National Finalist, Beaudette will be representing her community, for a chance to win the title of Miss Teen Canada Globe 2012. During her journey, Beaudette will be doing appearances in different special events and charity fundraisers, throughout her community. Beaudette is scheduled to compete for the National Title of Miss Teen Canada Globe 2012, this August 2012. in Toronto Ontario. Beaudette will be fund-raising money to pay for the expenses during the week of the pageant, and any extra money raised will be donated to CHEO! Here is Local Seeker journalist Jason Setnyk's interview with Miss Teen Canada contestant Mikaela Amber Beaudette. 1. Jason Setnyk: Have you participated in pageants before? What got you interested in participating in these events? Mikaela Beaudette: I have not participated in any other pageants before, but I did do some modelling for Profile Modelling and auditioned for a commercial. The reason I wanted to go into this pageant was because I saw it as a good opportunity for scholarships, to meet and experience new people and this pageant is very community and charity oriented and that interested me. I would like to gain new experiences, meet new people and help the community by competing in this pageant. 2. Jason Setnyk: What does representing Cornwall Ontario at the Miss Teen Canada pageant mean to you? Mikaela Beaudette: I believe Cornwall is a great place to live and it has a lot of positives. For instance; we are a small community but we still have great schools that provide a fantastic education. Our housing costs are less expensive than in a bigger city, we are equally involved in sports and the arts and we have a lot to offer in terms of the St. Lawrence river is close by and we have great camping and boating activities. All of this makes me proud to represent Cornwall. 3. Jason Setnyk: What kind of training and preparation is required? Mikaela Beaudette: The training will be held the week before the pageant and they will teach us how to present ourselves, walk properly, choreographers will be teaching us dances and makeup specialist will be guiding us on our hair and makeup. They will also be teaching us how to speak in public settings and we will be attending charity events and helping out. 4. Jason Setnyk: What do you want the judges of the pageant to see in you? What sets you apart from the other contestants? Mikaela Beaudette: I hope the judges see me as an intelligent, fun loving and outgoing girl who doesn't take herself too seriously and that I like to laugh and make the best of any situation. I hope they see that I am in this to be a good role model and spokesperson for Cornwall and Canada. 5. Jason Setnyk: Tell us about why you are fund-raising? Mikaela Beaudette: The fund-raising goal is for each delegate to raise $3,000 for her expenses during the week of the pageant, but I would also like to go further and raise more so I can donate most of it to Cheo. I would also like to let people know that I would love to use this opportunity to participate in various functions in the city and help them with their causes as well. I'm going to ask for sponsorships and pledges and we're also thinking about a draw for a large basket of goodies and we're trying to come up with other ideas, like perhaps a car wash, large community garage sale, Krispy Kreme donuts and things like that. I am going to talk to businesses and see if they can help out with donations for the basket and I am hoping I can raise a lot more than the required $3,000 so I can donate a lot to CHEO. If you would like to donate, and help Beaudette with this goal, send an email to: dbeaudette@cogeco.ca The website for the pageant is misscanada.tv Thank you Mikaela Beaudette for this interview. The Local Seeker and all of Cornwall Ontario are cheering you on!
scales for one team over another, especially if they don’t regroup and focus on the game. The goaltender has the tough job of ensuring that they stop the goals and the rebound shots. Good goaltending can save the game, but poor goaltending can lose the game. The intensity of the games, the rivalry among the players, the dedication of the fans, all make for an exciting time. Playoffs are time to go hard or go home. Think about how much action happens in 60 minutes. Every second counts. We should live our lives like that. Make every second count; work as a team, and keep focused on our goals. To my hockey friends, thanks for making playoff time memorable. Bring on round two! MORTGAGE MATTERS with Derrick Cracknell
Spring clean your debt! That first fresh breath of spring always sets us in motion: we can’t wait to sweep away the clutter. Sure it’s a bit of work, but it feels great when the lawn is raked, the windows and curtains are washed, and the closets are cleared. Just like the clutter that sneaks up in your closets, you can also accumulate debt clutter: credit cards, car payments, tax bills and other obligations. If you’re concerned about your debt clutter, then this may be the year to spring clean your debt. With mortgage rates still at historic lows, this spring you have an incredible window of opportunity. By using your home equity, you can consolidate your high interest debt into a new or existing mortgage, giving you interest savings and a new, lower monthly payment. In almost every case, you’re better off holding your debt in a mortgage than in any other lending vehicle. Why? Because we continue to benefit from mortgage rates that are still among the lowest in decades. Worried about penalties to break your current mortgage? We can assess your situation; there’s a good chance that the savings each month will far outweigh any penalties. As an example, consider the following situation: •
your current mortgage is $155,000 at 5.5% with a monthly payment of $946
•
you also have a car loan of $20,000 and credit cards maxed out at $20,000, both of which cost you $920 a month
•
your total monthly payment is $1,866
Your mortgage planner presents the following scenario: •
you get a new mortgage for $202,000 to cover the original $155,000, the $40,000 in credit cards and car loan, and $7,000 to break your mortgage
•
your new mortgage is at 4.10% and you now have a much lower overall monthly payment of $1,074.
With this new scenario, monthly payments are $792 less each month; a great improvement in cash flow! And if you put $425 of that cash flow into your mortgage payment, you reduce your amortization from 25 years to 15.
We’re a fortunate generation of homeowners. We can benefit from low mortgage rates to enjoy our lives and our homes – and to manage our debt wisely. Independent mortgage planners – who have access to more than 50 different lenders, including most of the major banks – have become specialists in helping Canadians re-structure debt. In addition to offering access to a broad range of mortgage options, these experienced planners provide credit advice and debt management tips that can help save thousands of dollars. Consider whether or not you need a clear and simple look at what you’ve got to gain from spring cleaning your debt. We don’t know how long these great rates will last, but right now, it is a historic opportunity.
