Helping local business owners develop solid marketing strategies
By Angela Besner Account Manager Cornwall Business Centre Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)
Earlier this year, the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) held a Marketing Booster Program that helped 12 growing local companies improve their marketing strategies. The program was organized with financial support from the Eastern Ontario Development Program— managed by S.D. & G. Community Futures Development Program. On behalf of BDC, I would like to thank S.D. & G. Community Futures Development Corporation for their generous support, covering 50% of the program’s costs. Our two organizations share the same mission—supporting entrepreneurs and helping businesses grow. That’s why we were so proud to offer this affordable, results-oriented program to Cornwall businesses. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all 21 marketing representatives and business owners who participated in the program’s three half-day interactive workshops. The workshops allowed participants to develop valuable skills and learn to use a variety of tools to improve their marketing and sales performance. The success of these businesses is vital to Cornwall’s prosperity. Small business owners are busy running their companies and often lack the marketing resources to find new opportunities and gain market share. That’s why BDC has designed the Marketing Booster Program with their needs in mind. BDC is Canada's business development bank and our motto is Entrepreneurs First. With 1,900 employees and more than 100 business centres across the country, BDC offers financing, venture capital and consulting services to 29,000 small and mediumsized companies. Their success is vital to Canada's prosperity. For more information, please visit www.bdc.ca or contact Angela Besner, Account Manager, BDC, at angela.besner@bdc.ca or at (613) 894–4904.

"On Saturday Aug 25 2012 the local 076 Cornwall chapter of the Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers held a ride to Ottawa for the Annual Motorcycle Appreciation Day put on by Bikers Church. 28 bikers left Cornwall led by Tony Pettinella and Leo Goulet. Once in Ottawa at Bikers Church the members enjoyed many vendors, great music and the motorcycle games that were held. Several members tried their skill at the rodeo games such as the slow race (last one across the finish line wins), the road kill toss, and a couple new games like the ball in the tube game, where you place a ball in a tube and u have to time your ride along side the tube and catch the ball when it comes out of the tube, not easy for the passenger to catch the ball or the bike driver to balance at slow speeds. The other new game was also a skill game where the passenger laid down across the bike and the driver rode the bike along side 5 bottles while the passenger tried to put sticks in each bottle without knocking the bottles over, again not easy for the driver or passenger but a lot of fun. Claire Poitras came home with a trophy for having the best Trike in the Show 'n Shine bike show, Clair's 2nd win with the trike in Ottawa. The day was capped off with a great pulled pork BBQ including corn on the cob and all the fixings hosted by Bikers Church. Fun day for all." All investments carry risk. But, as an investor, one of the biggest risks you face is that of not achieving your longterm goals, such as enjoying a comfortable retirement and remaining financially independent throughout your life. To help reach your objectives, you need to own a variety of investment vehicles — and each carries its own type of risk. If you spread your investment dollars among vehicles that carry different types of risk, you may increase your chances of owning some investments that do well, even if, at the same time, you own others that aren’t. As a result, you may be able to reduce the overall level of volatility in your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses.) To diversify your risk factors, you first need to recognize them. Here are some of the most common types of investment risk: Market risk —This is the type of risk that everyone thinks about — the risk that you could lose principal if the value of your investment drops and does not recover before you sell it. All investments are subject to market risk. You can help lessen this risk by owning a wide variety of investments from different industries and even different countries. Inflation (purchasing power) risk — If you own a fixed-rate investment, such as a Certificate of Deposit (CD), that pays an interest rate below the current rate of inflation, you are incurring purchasing power risk. Fixed-income investments can help provide reliable income streams, but you also need to consider investments with growth potential to help work toward your long-term goals. Interest-rate risk — Bonds and other fixed-income investments are subject to interest-rate risk. If you own a bond that pays 4% interest, and newly issued bonds pay 5%, it would be difficult to sell your bond for full price. So if you wanted to sell it prior to maturity, you might have to offer it at a discount to the original price. However, if you hold your bonds to maturity, you can expect to receive return of your principal provided the bond does not default. Default risk — Bonds, along with some more complex investments, such as options, are subject to default risk. If a company issues a bond that you’ve bought and that company runs into severe financial difficulties, or even goes bankrupt, it may default on its bonds, leaving you holding the bag. You can help protect against this risk by sticking with “investmentgrade” bonds — those that receive high ratings from independent rating agencies such as Standard & Poor’s or Moody’s. Liquidity risk — Some investments, like real estate, are harder to sell than others. Thus, real estate is considered more “illiquid” than many common investments. Make sure you understand what type of risk is associated with every investment you own. And try to avoid “overloading” your portfolio with too many investments with the same type of risks. Doing so will not result in a totally smooth journey through the investment world — but it may help eliminate some of the “bumps” along the way. The program was rather unique as usual. It was filled with live performances, and great activities. Performers such as; DJ Phatty Poirier, Sabrina Fallah (Ottawa), CMO, Big S, and Jano Feghali (via screen from Cairo-Egypt) gave the night a magical touch with their live performances, and humble participation. 3Angels Power will release a highlight reel, documenting this unforgettable night.
Our film production company did two events so far to help in funding our upcoming horror movie "Franceska Finger NailZ" (local movie project) , and had not much luck with attendance, maybe the third time around will be a charm!
Everyone who attended including performers, and volunteers had fun and enjoyed the show to the fullest. DJ Phatty Poirier was spinning hits from Music Then & Now for everyone. He started out the show with a trivia (Guess That Song) which got everyone involved in guessing songs from different eras. A winner was awarded with a mystery gift bag based on correct answers written by the participant.

Used 1 can of chickpeas, a couple table spoons of olive oil enough to cover lightly, herbs from the garden, paprika, cayenne, ground black pepper and a pinch of brown sugar so they are spicy and a little sweet. Bake at 400 for about 45 minutes on parchment paper on a cookie sheet stirring occasionally. These are high in protein and an great snack! Enjoy!

BMO Nesbitt Burns Study: Investors Are Seeking Honest Advisors Who Can Put Their Investments Into Perspective
• Eighty-nine per cent of Canadian investors cite trustworthiness
and honesty as very important characteristics of an investment advisor • Advisors who provide a detailed financial plan and are able to explain the markets in easy-to-understand terms are well positioned to succeed • Investors place higher priority on getting returns that meet their specific plan targets than on getting returns that outperform the market • BMO Nesbitt Burns’ 100 years of success has been based on a commitment to the client-advisor relationship and helping Canadians reach their financial goals TORONTO, August 9, 2012 – BMO Nesbitt Burns today released a study which found that Canadians are opting for investment advisors who are honest, able to explain things in easy-to-understand terms and who will take the time to work with them to develop a detailed financial plan. Interestingly, the study also found that investors are less interested in returns that outperform the markets than returns that meet their financial plan’s targets. The study, conducted by Pollara, showed that more than two-thirds (69 per cent) of Canadian investors have used the services of a financial or investment advisor within the past 12 months. When selecting an investment advisor, Canadians chose the following key attributes as topping their wish list:
• Trustworthiness and honesty (89 per cent cited as most • • • •
important) Level of knowledge (88 per cent) Experience (83 per cent) Track record and availability (tied at 76 per cent) Reputation and advisor confidence level (tied at 75 per cent)
“There is tremendous value in working with a trusted investment advisor given the sideways movement we’ve seen in the markets and the myriad of financial options available to Canadian investors today,” said Bill Brown, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, BMO Nesbitt Burns. “Working closely with a professional who understands your financial goals and can identify a suitable investing strategy can greatly enhance your ability to succeed when it comes to managing your investments.”
with your advisor of the fees you will be paying and the services you will receive to avoid any surprises. Soft skills matter: Look for an advisor who listens to you and takes an interest in your specific life situation. That means extending the wealth management conversation beyond investments to include things that matter to you such as insurance, estate planning, tax planning, business succession planning and/or education savings. Contact is key: A good advisor will work with you to define and manage your service level expectations when it comes to contact. Regular contact such as portfolio reviews, phone calls and face-to-face meetings to discuss information related to your overall financial plan is essential.
The study also revealed: • Eighty-two per cent of Canadians want their investment advisor to explain their investments in easy-to-understand terms. • It is more important for investors to get returns that meet their financial plan’s targets (84 per cent) than returns that outperform the market (71 per cent). • Sixty-nine per cent think it is very important that their investment advisor engages in meaningful communication on a regular basis.
Consider credentials: Choose an advisor who possesses well-known industry designations such as Personal Financial Planner (PFP)®, Chartered Investment Manager (CIM)®.or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)® and is committed to ongoing continuing education.
“It’s encouraging that Canadians appreciate the importance of having the performance of their investments track to their overall financial plan,” said Mr. Brown. “However, they are also seeking to play a more active role in managing their portfolios by better understanding the markets. Advisors can set themselves up for success by engaging their clients in meaningful conversation and taking the time to explain the market forces at play and how they affect investing.”

BMO Nesbitt Burns offers the following advice to Canadians investors looking for an investment advisor: Get the lowdown: Does ‘client service’ imply no more than a financial statement or is it followed up with meaningful conversations, either by phone or face-to-face? Also, ensure you have a clear understanding

He’s not my dog explained Haley who happened to be helping out a friend who was away, and was making sure this friendly giant named Trailer, a Brindle Great Dane, was getting in some much needed exercise and a chance to cool off down at the boat launch in Lamoureux Park. Last week I spoke about “Be a Tree Program” that teaches dog safety with kids. I must say that if ever there was an ambassador needed for this program, I would think Haley would be a great choice! Undaunted, and dwarfed by Trailer’s size, Haley knew exactly how to handle her canine friend, and was easily approachable to anyone who ventured close in to have a visit. Incidentally, I believe the two of them are quite used to the attention they draw as they appear rather unusual when you see them walking together. Of course her dad is always nearby so help is never too far away, but you immediately relate to how Haley has learned much about dogs, and there is no need to fear, or worry about Trailer if you ever encounter them walking about in Cornwall. Not only did I enjoy a chance to capture them in this photo together, but it was a real treat for me to meet them, and have a chance to say hello to this gentle giant. Parents why not learn more about Be A Tree Program www.bea-tree.com, and invite your children to become more dog savvy.

celebrate unions and the gains in wages, working conditions and benefits that they brought to the workplace.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH, 2012 or read the paper online
www.thelocalseeker.com
DEADLINES FOR ALL ISSUES Tuesdays at 5pm
The 2012 celebration brings back Trevor Walsh who will perform and provide backup for local musician groups. Participation is a key element in Labour Day fun and the hoola hoop and twist contests provide ample opportunity for everyone to get involved. Little John and his popular clown act will return and the ever popular electric train will be running nonstop. There will be face-painting and games for kids too. Festivities get underway at 10 and run till 3 pm.
As we celebrate and as we march we will be very conscious of the fact that the struggle for rights and working conditions is never finished. Collective bargaining is the heart of the union movement and is chief among the many rights workers hold dear. At the moment, in Ontario, the provincial government is attacking the collective bargaining rights of teachers, so this year’s Labour Day celebration has a distinctly political edge. All workers, those within and those outside the education sector are conscious that while we are celebrating the gains made in past struggles, the government is ramming through a piece of anti-worker legislation that attacks the most fundamental right that workers exercise. This piece of anti-worker legislation will be the focus of our traditional Labour Day March that is an essential part off our activity in the park.
