Arts and Culture News for Cornwall and SD&G Spirit of a City artists feel a sense of accomplishment! Sara Murphy stood in front of the hospital earlier this week holding a copy of Spirit of a City, a compilation CD of local bands raising money for the hospital. She said, "Together, we did it! This morning the new MRI magnet was lowered into the Cornwall Community Hospital! Thank you to all the businesses, organizations and consumers who supported our Spirit of a City Compilation CD project! A HUGE thank you to all the musicians who donated your gift of music. Your efforts will help save lives, right here in our community!"

Cornwall Public Library launches 6th annual Writing Contest! The Cornwall Public Library is encouraging aspiring writers to put pen to paper with the launch of the 6th annual Writing Contest for the Developing Writer. The contest is open to anyone living in Cornwall or SD & G (regardless of Library membership), and prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finalists in all categories. There are Fiction and Poetry categories for writers 17 years of age and older, and a Fiction category for writers between the ages of 13 to 16. Deadline for submissions is Monday, December 31st at 12:00pm, and there is no entry fee. The winners will be announced during the Big Reveal event on Monday, January 28th. In just a few short years, the writing contest has already grown into one of the most highly-anticipated events on the Library’s event calendar. Last year, roughly 60 submissions were received for the contest. “The intent of the contest is to get people started and to help writers develop their skills,” said Dawn Kiddell, Chief Librarian of the Cornwall Public Library. “The deadline is an incentive for writers to put pen to paper.” The top entries will be posted on the Library’s website, providing another incentive for aspiring writers who wish to have their work viewed by others. Those entering the contest must submit a piece of non-published work, however the writer is free to do whatever they wish with their work once the contest is over. Additional contest information, including rules and entry forms, can be found on the Cornwall Public Library website, http://library.cornwall.on.ca/2012-writing-contest/ Comedian Steve Patterson at Aultsville Theatre November 4th! See Comedian Steve Patterson on Thursday, November 4th at Aultsvile Theatre. The show starts at 8:00pm. Arguably most recognizable as host of CBC Radio’s The Debaters, it is as an international headline stand-up comedian where Steve Patterson truly shines. His hallmark gift for capturing a funny turn of phrase and reputation for turning a crowd of strangers into a guffawing community has brought Patterson to stages around the world, but also to perform regularly with the Just For Laughs organization, both as a host of their most recent cross-Canada tour, and as a feature performer at their prestigious televised festival galas. Patterson’s 2010 performance prompted the legendary comedy icon and gala host, Steve Martin, to proclaim, "If I’d known he was going to be THAT good, I would have cancelled him." This fall Canada’s Stand-Up Comedian of the Year, Steve Patterson, hits the road with his 90-minute one-man show This Is Not Debatable! Test of a Man .....
Once again...local chiropractor Dr. Paul Poirier has managed to snag another celebrity to aid him in his quest of spreading the awareness about brain tumours. He has, to date, recruited the help of ex California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who's uncle, by marriage to Maria Shriver, was the younger brother of JFK...senator Ted Kennedy who passed away in 2009 of a brain tumour. Poirier has also recruited the help of the most successful bodybuilder in the history of the sport, Ronnie Coleman (the only bodybuilder to beat Arnold's record by winning a staggering 8 Mr. Olympia titles).
Fast forwarding to the present, Dr. Poirier's been conversing with and has since recruited the founder and lead singer of the legendary Scottish rock band Jethro Tull...none other than flautist extrodinaire Ian Anderson seen here with Dr. Poirier holding his team Cornwall business card two hours prior to his NY city Broadway show in early October of this year. You might remember Jethro Tull's monster hits from the 70s including Aqualung, Crossed Eyed Mary, Thick as a Brick and Locomotive Breath. Although he lives in the UK, Mr. Anderson has agreed to narrate Dr. Poirier's documentary film on brain tumours titled "The test of a Man" which you can visit at www.testofaman.com and view the trailer that's been completed. When asked why he chose Ian Anderson to narrate the film he humorously stated "because people with a heavy british accent just sound smarter than us when they speak....plus Sir Paul McCartney was busy". The film is expected to be completed by late spring of 2013 and will be submitted into multiple film festivals.
Cornwall Transit offering discounts FOR STUDENTS IN NOVEMBER For the third consecutive year, the City transit service is offering students a discount on monthly passes and 10-ride tickets during the month of November. During November, students can purchase a monthly pass for just $40 (as opposed to the regular price of $54), while 10-ride tickets will cost only $12 compared to the regular price of $19. Original monthly bus passes must be purchased at the Cornwall Transit office on Second Street West (where a photo of the passenger will be taken), however renewal passes and 10-ride tickets are available in a variety of locations around the City.

Melanie Brulée moved to the big city less than a year ago. Now she has made her first solo recording — a five-song EP — which she is launching at The Social in Cornwall on November 15.

A HEARTY WHITE BEAN AND KALE MINESTRONE SOUP
My friend Lynn told me about this recipe. I am growing her kale plants in my garden this year. They have grown to be small kale trees, absolutely huge! The beauty of growing kale yourself, you can keep cutting off kale leaves all summer and fall and they just keep re-growing. Kale is a leafy green vegetable, rich in anti-oxidants, minerals and 613-936-1998 812 Pitt Street, Unit 6 vitamins. You can easily buy it at any green grocer, bag it up and refrigerate it. Add the leaves into your soups, stews, scrambled eggs, even dehydrate the leaves into kale chips. This minestrone soup is quickly prepared For %$". 1 tbsp. tomato paste 5 or 6 fresh sage leaves (if you plant a sage plant in your herb garden, it will just keep growing from year to year.) 1 tsp. sea salt black pepper to taste 1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice freshly grated Parmesan cheese
METHOD: Preparation time 30 minutes. Serves 3 to 4 nicely. -Rinse the kale leaves under cold water. Cut off the tough stems and save them for your compost or vegetable stock pot. Roll up the leaves and cut them in a chiffonade (thin ribbons). Set them aside. -In a 4 quart soup pot, heat the olive oil and saute the garlic for just a minute over medium heat. Add half of the cooked beans and half of the stock. -With the remaining beans and stock, puree them in a blender or food processor along with the tomato paste and the fresh sage leaves. -Stir this pureed mixture back into the soup pot. Season the soup with the salt and pepper to taste. -Now add the chopped kale leaves into the soup and simmer for about 10 minutes or until the kale has wilted. -Add the lemon juice and enough water to thin the soup down to your desired consistency. -Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. -Serve the soup piping hot and garnish with a little freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Pass the crusty bread and ENJOY!

True Art is in the eye of the Cheque Holder!
I’m often asked what kind of music I write. That’s always a very loaded question with no simple answer. “It’s not really country,” I say. In fact, it’s not country at all. There are hints of it, as well as hints of rhythm and blues and jazz, and a couple of the songs verge on rock.
I love a good debate, not an argument but a true defending of ideas and principles. There is nothing more fun than to discuss with your friends and fellow artists the merit of this style or that. What I have a problem with is intolerance! You know what I am referring to the person who no matter what you say believes you are wrong not for any other reason than they don’t happen to agree. Not agreeing is not even the real problem it’s the intolerant attitude toward anyone who opposes them, often to the level of discrediting the person who opposes them. This is where I have difficulties. I am of the opinion that everyone is entitled to their opinion, good, bad or indifferent. If you don’t like mine that is just fine with me, we can agree to disagree but let’s keep an open mind about the grey area between. Politicians love to practice intolerance. They often make up reasons why their opponent is wrong even if their logic is flawed just to discredit them and we have come to expect it from them. When it happens between artists then it is sad; this is because the nature of art is one of self expression and to simply dismiss that art on grounds of style, subject or not suppose to be done that way, strikes at the Artist’s very core. An example of this is my daughter is studying English Literature at University and although her professors for the most part are eager to hear the opinions of their students with regard to story writing she does have one professor that is not. She believes that modern literature such as “The Hunger Games” and “Harry Potter” are written by untalented writers serving an unsophisticated story line to uneducated morons or something like that. Her level of intolerance to the modern storyteller not only affects the moral of her students but their grade average if they dare to challenge her. I say that true art is in the eye of the cheque holder. Although the authors of modern literature may find her attitude offensive, it certainly isn’t hurting their bank accounts. Modern visual art is often the target of the intolerant. They have the opinion that unless it looks almost photographic in technical skill it is inferior art. I used to feel this way until I tried to paint in the Abstract Expressionist style and quickly realized that actually more painting skill was required to work with the abstract design than realism as the design will fail quickly and absolutely if not handled correctly. There will be those that will argue that and would accept a challenge but there are also those that would rather just bad mouth the abstract artists to anyone who would listen. “They paint that way because they can’t really paint” or my favorite “Gorilla’s and two year olds could do better”.
This is a disease that flourishes in every art form but when it comes from your peers it can be difficult to fight. When this happens what you need to remember is this; if you enjoy the art you are making, who cares what they think; if you are challenged and move forward, so what if they don’t like it; if what you are doing is unique and not yet accepted into the main stream, fantastic! Art is a business of the different, the unique and the ground breaking and if you are doing what everyone does just because they say you should, well then I would be worried. In closing keep this in mind: Beauty is in the eye of the cheque holder; storytelling writers make the most money; unique voices are sought after; safe little plays and films don’t become blockbusters and dancers who just tap dance are a dime a dozen. Now go forth and upset the intolerant!

Probably the greatest influence in my writing - and more than likely for any girl who has ever picked up a guitar - is folk. But I certainly wouldn’t call my music folk either. Some of my songs have even been described as having a European flavour. If it’s all of those things, but neither in particular, what is it then?
If you ask anyone who knows my music, their reaction usually is quite the same. They don’t know, and truth be told, neither do I. I grew up in a country-music-loving household, in the 60s and 70s, and I can’t really remember a time when there wasn’t a “hurtin’ tune” echoing through the house. You know, Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard among others of that ilk. There’s no denying its influence in some of my songs, but I would certainly not be called a country artist.
My taste in music and artist influence, has changed and evolved over my life and remains as diversified as music genres get: Elvis, Carly Simon, Fleetwood Mac, k.d. Lang, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Heart, Sting, Carol King, Bonnie Raitt, Amy Winehouse ... If you can possibly find a genre in that, then that’s me. I’ve been trying to give my music a name - folk-rock fusion/mockcountry/adult contemporary alternative - but nothing really fits. Does it need a name? Maybe not, and that’s ok too, unless I’m asked to tick a music genre box on Reverb Nation. What I can tell you is that I write about life and love and hope and all that’s good in the world. Sometimes I write about pain, and sadness, but plenty of happiness too. I write from the heart and feel eternally grateful to be able to do so, and to share it with anyone who’ll listen. My new CD, The Way I Am, took about three years and the help of a group of wonderful musicians/friends, who have generously gone the distance with me. My heart is full of them.
A couple of the guys and I will be previewing the CD at the Winter Windup Merchant Market on November 18, at the Civic Complex and then, I’m putting the band back together for a one-night-only CD release Concert. The band (featuring some of the best musicians in town - Rod Robillard on lead guitar, Greg Deruchie on guitar, Jim Sharp on drums, Bobby Tessier on bass, and Marc Carrière on flute and percussion) and I will be performing The Way I Am in its entirety at the St Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre (at the Power Dam) on Saturday, November 24, at 7:30pm (doors open at 7:00), on the bank of the beautiful river. Invite in the WIND! Just as the wind from Sandy blew into our region last evening, catapulting me forward as I drove down the 401, new opportunities have been blowing into my life and business. It is a great time in life, especially when you are open to what is possible rather than planning all the details. Of course I set the scene when Jim and I sat down mid-September and created our Strategic Attraction Plan (SAP) for the upcoming year. Strategic Attraction For years clients and colleagues have asked me about running a business and what makes a business successful. I simply say, Strategic Attraction Planning. I know you have all heard of a Strategic Plan, something that is considered an essential ingredient for any successful business. A secret, I’ve never had one ! What I have instead is my SAP. So what’s the difference? Strategic Attraction as the name suggests, is about engaging the Law of Attraction strategically in your business. It has four sections to it: 1. 2. 3. 4.
The qualities and characteristics of your perfect customer/client What makes you, as a business person/entrepreneur ‘tick’ – why you do what you do What you want – we call this clarity, setting your business intentions Who do you BE – understanding that everything you want from life begins within you and your energy
That’s different than a regular Strategic Plan! Intentions and Goals Intentions and goals are frequently confused. A simple explanation is that an intention is open ended. It states what you want yet is not fixed on a specific outcome. Example: I am attracting my perfect healthy body. Notice that you have not specified how this will happen or what you specifically mean by that. You are leaving the solution open ended and as a result, give yourself permission to attract something you may not have considered otherwise. Goals on the other hand specify an outcome. For example: I plan to lose 10 pounds, begin the new diet and go to the gym 3 nights a week. You have already decided on the solutions and fix your attention to the scales, what you eat and working out. Boring ! In business I have found that intentionality is far more powerful than goals. That’s not to say I don’t have any goals as most of the projects I work on have deadlines and deliverables. At the same time my intentions have opened up possibilities for me I never would have considered. You have to love that. Who You BE We all have a slightly skewed view of who we are. I have long been a believer of taking every opportunity to learn more about ME and to understand my strengths and what makes m unique. Knowing these things about yourself helps you to engage those strengths and focus on what you do well. Too often you do the opposite – you focus on improving your weaknesses. Trust me this does not work. Whatever you focus on grows! Don’t you want to grow your strengths?

There isn’t much racing news to report this week, as the off-season is beginning to set in for most race teams. The Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series will head south for their final race of the 2012 season at the World Finals at the DIRT Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina this coming weekend. Just a couple of tracks were in operation this past weekend, as Five Mile Point Speedway near Binghamton, New York hosted their season finale RoC event. Danny Johnson was the race winner and series champion finishing ahead of Jimmy Phelps, Stewart Friesen, Rick Laubach and Pat Ward. The only other track in action was Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland, and after a day of qualifying on Saturday, their features were rained out on Sunday and postponed until November 11th.

As mentioned earlier, there will be people traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina this week for the World Finals. This three-day event hosts the final points races for the Big Block Modifieds, World of Outlaw Late Models and World of Outlaw Sprint Cars. With the big storm approaching, I wish everyone safe travels, and the best of luck once they reach their destination. I was able to attend this event back in 2010, and wish I was going again this year. I may attend Black Rock Speedway on Saturday for their final race of 2012. They host the annual Empire Finale $6000 to win event for the Modifieds. I haven’t been to Black Rock in quite a few years, so if the weather co-operates I may make the four-hour trip to the Finger Lakes area of New York State. The final racing event of my season will take place on November 16th to 18th in Syracuse for the 33rd annual National Parts Peddler Trade Show and Auction at the New York State Fairgrounds. Although this show marks the end of a season for some, it also begins a brand new season for many of the vendors as they display their 2013 cars and equipment. The event will kick off on Friday, November 16th as they open the show to the public at noon. Friday night, everyone will be treated to the sounds of Johnny Cash as Terry Lee Goffey performs live on stage. Goffey is nationally-known and is the ultimate Johnny Cash tribute artist. The show will resume at 10:00am on Saturday morning for another day of buying and selling, and will close out on

It’s a great cause, and having worked with autistic children for over 8 years, this one is close to my heart. These individuals are awesome, we just need to give them the time and respect required in order to understand their needs. You can eat healthy on a budget and make it yourself with minimal effort. Food can taste awesome, when it is made in your kitchen with love.

Can you believe that we have welcomed November already? OMG! How time flies when you are having fun. What a great week-end this will be; time for all of us to get involved in our community one more time!
Joe, The kitchen in my house is about twenty years old. It has nice oak cabinets but they are rather dark and dated. I would like to refinish them in a more contemporary colour but I don’t know how to go about stripping them. I have contacted local cabinet refacers, they say they don’t do that and then they sent me to you. What is the easiest way to maintain my existing kitchen but modernize it with a more contemporary colour and make it look like new? Thanks for your help, Jeff Thanks for the question Jeff. This is a good one that has crossed the minds of many people. I have been asked numerous times by customers and the answer is always the same: it comes down to time or money. If you don’t have one you best have a lot of the other. Stripping wooden furnishings of any kind is a time consuming and delicate process and cabinetry is no different. Any intricate millwork will invariably require hours and hours of painstaking solvent and scraper work. One avenue that I might suggest you try (and I haven’t actually tried this myself so I can’t vouch for the success of it - but I know it will work) is abrasive blasting. Using a compressed air device, sand or other natural abrasives are blown at an object at high speeds to blast off paint and finishes. Now since most or all abrasives are harder than wood you will have to exercise a great deal of caution when attacking your cabinets with this method. I recommend a few trial runs on the backs of the doors to get the feel for the stripping ability of your particular abrasive. Besides sand - which is the traditional and least expensive abrasive available - there are a variety to choose from ranging in coarseness and hardness. Other available abrasives include soda, aluminum oxide, glass beads, walnut shells, and salt; basically anything that is fine enough to spray out a nozzle with air. Oak is about as hard as domestic woods get so you will have a fairly good shot at stripping them down without damaging them. You will still have to invest a fair bit of time sanding them smooth afterwards and then staining and refinishing them, but the blasting will save you a lot of time with the details. So this is a happy medium between time and money. I wish you the best in your endeavour. If you stick to it, it will be complete before you know it and you’ll have the pride of a project you completed that you get to admire every day. Cornwall's Benson Centre Wins International Excellence in Design Award Cornwall's new multi-sport facility has been recognized with an Excellence in Design Award by American Buildings Company. The $32 million facility was named the Green Building of the Year and was profiled in a 24 page glossy publication distributed around the world. The Benson Centre also took Runner Up honours in the overall 'Building of the Year' category, beating out Auburn University's impressive indoor practice facility and placing second only to the White River Valley Electric Cooperative Building in Branson Missouri. The Benson Centre was nominated for the award by Chris Markell of Bourgon Construction Ltd., who worked on the project with general contractor Pomerleau. The Benson Centre was designed by Barry • Bryan Associates (1991) Limited, Architects, Engineers.

The Ontario Early Years Centre of SD&G, the Centre de Santé Communautaire de l’Estrie and Hip Kids presented the 5th Annual Family Expo at the Cornwall Civic complex on October 19 and 20th. This show brought together products, services and resources for parents and their children in the Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne

area. Exhibitors presented parents with the latest in toys, clothes, baby and toddler supplies as well as child care options, RESP’s and so much more!
The group which consists of 70 members (many of them seen in the photo above) started in Cornwall in 2002 with founding members Joan Bray, Diane Daoust and Kelly Picket. They meet on the last Wednesday of each month at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Cornwall and gather to make quilts. Since 2002 they have made and donated 24,011 quilts to cancer patients and this past October alone they made a total of 28 quilts. Pictured in the second photo above is the Executive. A bit of history: Victoria Quilts was established in memory of Victoria Ann Morrison, a cancer patient and quilt maker. She made over 100 “Love Quilts” in her short lifetime. She spoke of being cold during her chemotherapy treatments and with her in mind, Victoria Quilts Canada was founded in 1998.

Two full buses rolled out of their yard and headed to Lac Leamy for their annual Charity Casino Run for CHEO. $2600.00 was raised that evening everyone had a great time all for a worthy cause. First Student would like to thank everyone who came out to support their fundraiser. We look forward to do it again! The dust hasn’t even settled from one fundraiser they are already getting their hands dirty planning another.
