LEFT: Sister Janet MacDonell (1849 - 1937) was one of the founding Sisters of Cornwall's first hospital, the Hotel Dieu when she arrived in town from Kingston with Mother Margaret Donelly, and Sisters Amabel McCarthy, Anne Hopkins, and Margaret Powers, on the four pm train with Bishop Alexander Macdonell on February 9, 1897.

Born in Alexandria, Sister MacDonell entered the Religious Hospitallers in Kingston at age 21. Despite severe illness, she stayed with the Order and came to Cornwall to help found the hospital. By 1907 she was on the only foundress still living in Cornwall. In 1926, she along with Sister Christine MacDonell deeded land on McConnell Ave. that would later become St. Joseph's Cemetery. The gift obtained from her father's estate eventually provided enough space for the new Hotel Dieu. The old hospital was now renamed after her. In 1989 this facility was replaced by the Janet MacDonell Memorial Pavillion chronic care unit attached to the Hotel Dieu.

ABOVE: Berenice Dickson, spring 1945, founded Dickson School of Dance. Born in Montreal, Miss Dickson moved to Cornwall with her parents. As the city lacked any classical dance or baton teachers, her mother founded the Cornwall Little Concert Dance Group. Berenice started to teach in her basement in the 1940s charging 25 cents per lesson to her students ages 3 to 17. When she retired in 1986 the fee had raised to 75 cents per session. Unable to withstand requests for her teaching abilities, Dickson taught tap dancing to the Seaway Seniors Club. In 1987 she received the Cornwall Arts Development Committee's Arts Achievement Award. She died in 2001.

LEFT: V.O.N. nurse, Miss Sybil Everitt, sitting centre. Miss Everitt came to Cornwall from New Brunswick to become nurse-in-charge of the local chapter of the Victorian Order of Nurses.

As head of the V.O.N., Miss Everitt constantly praised her staff for their work.

Her testimonial/retirement dinner was held in 1961.

BELOW LEFT: Milly Schnaufer Read flashing her famous smile, while holding a Coca-Cola Tray she modeled for in the 1940s. Milly Schnaufer may be one of the area's most famous women, as the redheaded girl featured on Coca-Cola's advertising trays throughout the 1940s. Milly was born in Montreal to Bertha Legault of Cornwall and George Schnaufer. Milly grew up in Montreal and summered in Lancaster. She started her modeling career at age 17 in Montreal for a pair of photographers she worked for. She appeared in ads for Coke, Pepsi, Gurd's ginger ale and Black Cat cigarettes. She said of her career that the photographers made the money while she received a small bonus. Milly was "discovered" by Warner Brothers in 1942, and was given acting lessons, but didn't take to the career. Her mother called her back to Montreal to be with her family, and eventually settled in B.C. to be with her family again where she modeled for department stores until her 70s.

LEFT: Ella MacLennan, athlete and volunteer, died 1975. Called "one of Cornwall's most colourful women," Miss MacLennan attended Ottawa Ladies College. Upon graduation she returned to Cornwall to contribute "...to the well-being of others." Along with working with founding the Family Service Bureau, she was a charter member of the local Red Cross, served on the local and national executive of the Victorian Orders of Nurses, and was a member of the St. Lawrence Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire.

RIGHT: Teacher Marie Tanguay from Alexandria, taught in Cornwall's Separate School system for nearly half a century.

Colleague Irene Lortie said "...she was a wonderful teacher...they (the students) went through the (high school entrance examinations) or else...there was no halfway mark. Miss Tanguay received awards from both the Franco-Ontarien education system, the Vatican and by Queen Elizabeth on her coronation for her work. L'Ecole Secondaire Ste. Croix was renamed in her honour in 1972. Unfortunately the files in the archives of the Cornwall Community Museum do not have any more information about Miss Tanguay. General Electryk Album Release! General Electryk will officially release their debut album "Petty Little Things" onto 12" vinyl!

After much anticipation, the General Electryk will officially release their debut album "Petty Little Things" onto 12" vinyl records at Cornwall Regional Art Gallery on Saturday February 11th at 7pm, (drinks at Schnitzels afterwards) thanks in part to a grant from Artpreneur 2010 and Cornwall Business Enterprise. The General Electryk held an artwork competition where residents of the S D & G area were encouraged to send in original artwork to grace the front and back covers of the album. The image chosen for the front of the album, (which you see here as the invite pic) was drawn by artist Jay Schwartz and the back cover image was painted by artist Daniel Archambault.

Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone The mere word ‘comfort’ makes me think of being warm and cozy, at peace, relaxed, surrounded by that which brings me joy. Sometimes it is right where I want to be, but to grow I know I have to push myself past my comfort zone, once in a while.

I was born in July which means in zodiac symbols I am “cancer” with the symbol of the crab. It is somewhat appropriate since when I am scared, nervous, or uncomfortable, I have the tendency to retreat to my shell, just like the crab. It is safe. I can have that outer shell protecting me. My guard is up and no one can hurt me, but it also means I’ll miss out on things.

When I was younger, I was shy. Business and my desire to succeed, helped me release some of that shyness. I had to.

How I overcame it, was by helping others. I’d go to events and help other people meet and network. I didn’t think about me or the thought of rejection or being self-conscious, I was more concerned about the ones I helped.

With all the changes that occurred last year in my life, I find myself in that place where I need to come out of my comfort zone again. I have to let down my guard, move in different directions and find new paths. I am on a journey to make the changes I want. There is nothing wrong with being comfortable, but there is with hiding.

I took some steps lately and made new friends, reconnected with old friends, tried new fitness regimes, changed some of my bad habits and started taking baby steps and sometimes strides towards my goals. I have a few people in my life that are adept at easing me out of my comfort zone. I don’t have to go back to being that shy person I once was. I have made so many accomplishments in my life, and yes, loss happens, but there are others that welcome you.

My phone contract was coming to an end, and my old flip phone had to go. I investigated the options and decided that the Iphone was the right choice for me. I already am an avid user of the Ipod and Itunes. Jeff at Telus in the Cornwall Square, was very helpful. He answered all my questions, set up my new phone and it was a great experience.

I spent most of Saturday setting up my new phone; transferring music, setting up apps and getting familiar with the new features available.

Many of my friends and family are avid texters. I am not. Now with the new phone it won’t be painstakingly slow to send a message. I am hoping I will be able to keep in touch more. One of my friends showed me what "Face Time" was.

Not a fan personally.

The idea that I have to make sure my hair looks okay to answer the phone takes away some of the appeal for me. Ah, isn’t technology fun.

This past weekend I heard from several friends and it was awesome. It doesn’t matter what age we are, it is good to stay in touch, share a laugh, vent a little and then laugh some more. I received compliments on my new photo taken with my new phone, made some plans for the next month and caught up with friends that have embarked on new adventures.

So yes, I still like to wear comfy pants on weekends, but every now and then, it is fun to dress up, indulge in a little luxury and try some cute new shoes. If I’m stepping out of my comfort zone, why not be a little stylish.

Hey, it is February, soon the ice will melt and the warmer weather will be upon us and the heavy boots we wear to trudge through the snow, slush and ice, will be replaced with lighter fare. So go ahead, step out of your comfort zone once in a while. Who knows that little extra step may lead to a whole new comfort level.

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination.

JennFit HEALTHY RECIPE: TURNIP FRIES AND ARTICHOKE DIP

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Peel turnips and cut into strips to resemble shoe string potatoes.

Spray a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil with organic olive oil. Lay the "fries" on the foil. Spray further with oil.

Season with spices of your choice. Organic garlic and onion powder, sea salt & pepper are my favourite.

You can also use chilli powder, cumin, cayenne pepper if you like.

Bake for about 20 minutes and turn. Bake another 10 minutes or so until crispy.

CREAMY CURRIED ARTICHOKE DIP Ingredients: 5 organic artichoke hearts 1 tablespoon fresh organic parsley 1 tsp organic curry powder 2 cloves organic garlic 1/4 tsp organic cayenne pepper Directions: In a food processor blend the artichoke hearts and the garlic cloves.

Add the spices and blend.

This sauce also tastes fabulous as a topping for grilled salmon.

To Retire Comfortably, Know Which Moves to Make — and When to Make Them We all want to enjoy living a comfortable retirement.

But to do so, we need to make different moves, and consider different issues, at different times of our lives.

To help illustrate this point, let’s look at three individuals:

• Alice, who is just starting her career • Bob, who is nearing retirement • Charlie, who recently retired

Let’s start with Alice. As a young worker, she most likely has 40 years ahead of her until she retires. Yet she realizes that it’s never too soon to start saving for retirement, so she has already started contributing to her Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and company-sponsored retirement plan.

And because Alice has so much time ahead of her, she has decided to invest aggressively, putting much of her contributions in growth-oriented investments, such as equities and equity mutual funds. The market will certainly have its “dips” in the future, which can cause her account values to rise and fall from year to year. But the longer Alice holds her investments, the less of an impact market declines should have on her RRSP and other accounts.

Now let’s turn our attention to Bob. Because he's within a few years of retirement, he has some key decisions to make. For one, he must decide whether to change the investment mix in his RRSP and other accounts. Because Bob doesn’t have much time to overcome market volatility and wants to maintain the gains he has already achieved, he may decide to become more conservative with his investments. As a result, he may choose to move some of his stocks to bonds and other fixed-income securities. But he doesn’t abandon all his growth-oriented investments. Bob realizes that he may spend two or three decades in retirement and will need to stay ahead of inflation.

Our final investor is Charlie, who recently retired. His biggest concern is outliving his financial resources. As a result, he may need to consider a variety of moves. For starters, he should determine when to start taking his Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP) and when to begin taking withdrawals from his Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). Charlie, like all investors, must convert his RRSP to an RRIF no later than December 31 in the year he turns age 71. After deciding when to start taking withdrawals from his retirement plans, he’ll also need to decide the appropriate amount to withdraw from his portfolio to help cover expenses. When he does, he will also need to adjust for inflation. In addition, he'll need to consider whether income guarantee solutions, such as an immediate life annuity or a segregated fund with a Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit, would be beneficial to provide him with an income stream he can’t outlive.

Finally, Charlie might need to rebalance his overall investment portfolio to provide himself with more income.

For help in making the types of choices described above, work with a financial professional. But in any case, you need to be prepared to take the right steps, at the right times, so you can live in retirement on your terms.

We have had 2 days of below zero here in NEL. That is cause enough for people to get their skates sharpened and to develop a crazy level of skate frenzy stress that you’d have to see to believe.

There is no ice yet - ok - actually there is a very thin layer of ice developing over the canals and ponds in the countryside. A very thin layer right now. But it’s ice.

There is such a hope for skating that they have turned off some of the wind turbines that pump water through the canals to give it more chance of freezing and I read in the paper this morning that they have banned boats from cruising out on certain ponds. The “ice men” are frequently checking for new mm’s (millimeters, not m&m chocolate…), getting rid of any debris they see floating in the water.

The official amount of mm’s (see above…) for skating is 7cm ( I think). From a Canadian’s standpoint - that sure doesn’t sound like a lot - but I must admit I have been out there - and on occasion, as one of the first.

We go out with a rope and pick in case we go through the ice. The idea being that you can throw the rope out to someone and/or use the pick (looks like a screwdriver - in fact, my husband sometimes brings a screwdriver…) to give you grip to get out of the ice. I’ve never fallen through, though I have gotten a wet foot - but we have seen people fall through - and even offered one guy a hot shower once.

The water is cold after all…

The ice can be so thin that it moves when you are skating.

You can hear it cracking and re-adjusting. It rarely freezes under the many bridges, so the ice-men make smaller wooden bridges to get over the water.

I must also say that almost everywhere we are likely to skate, the water depth is no more than 2m and in many cases even less… So that helps put the 7cm in perspective, right?

People will not go to work in order to skate -- and it will be ok as the boss will also be skating. They will cancel vacations, meetings, find babysitters, let go of all other responsibilities. There will be impromptu hot chocolate stalls set up on the ice (we did that one year and made a killing!), and everyone, everywhere, will be happy. I mean, really really Happy.

I love to skate. Speed skating, that is. With the long blades and leather boots. Skating over the ponds, through the grassy swamplands, rosy cheeks and cold feet, huge smiles on everyone I see - it’s up there in my favorite things to do.

So. Let There Be Ice!!!

Skating Fever

So many people ask me, Sylvie how do you maintain your weight loss? Don’t you find it hard?

Don’t you find it boring to always eat the same thing? First of all, when I decided that this would be my new lifestyle, I never looked back….how can I ever get bored when all of the food that I make in my kitchen with fresh natural/organic produce , preservative and insecticide free, full of color and flavors (spices) be nothing but a symphony of taste and goodness?

I control all of the fresh ingredients that go into my meal preparation. I can pronounce the ingredients, nothing finishes with “ose”(fructose, glucose,…) and my goodness I can even control the salt and sugar levels…imagine that?? No msg, no hydrogenated oils, no trans fats etc….just simple back to basics ingredients that were meant to be consumed by humans, the way Mother Nature intended it to be.

When I reached my goal and started eating “regular food” it was the scariest thing ever!! I now had to depend on myself and everything that I had read about over the last four months…the hours, the energy and the research spent on this was finally going to come together. I had a plan and had to put it into action….this was going to be quite the challenge for me.

Having lost so much weight in such a short period of time (55 lbs in 4 months), I had no idea how my body was going to react to the reintroducing of food. This was always the problem, when I would reach my goal with other diets…a couple of months later it would all come back on…then I would be so disappointed in myself and feel so sad and depressed. This time, I was very lucky to have the guidance and support of an amazing personal trainer, Adam Leroux at Physical Limits Fitness Club.

He was always so patient and would answer all of my questions (trust me I had lots). Thanks Adam, you are the best!

The first thing that I did to stay on the right track is purchase a plastic plate that had three divisions in it (Giant Tiger, Walmart). The larger section was for my raw or steamed vegetables, the other two would be for grains(usually organic brown rice or quinoa) and the third would be for protein ( 2 eggs = 1 protein, organic meat, nuts etc…)

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS her husband have decided to travel for the next three months before the time comes when she will not be able to do so. I asked myself, “what am I waiting for?”

Are YOU saying YES to YOU I have noticed that there are things I really want to attract in life that simply don’t happen and I find myself wondering why? As I pondered this question the other day, a roadSIGN appeared in the form of a question.

The question: Am I saying YES to me?

I had to take a step back as I considered my answer. Here I am a coach for others, reminding my clients to be clear on their boundaries, both personal and professional and the importance of saying NO when NO is the right answer. I often use my favorite Jack Canfield quote to facilitate this, “I am not saying NO to you, I am saying YES to me.” There it is, saying YES to me, but am I ?.

Here is what I have noticed. I don’t give myself permission to do lots of things, partly because I am a bit of a ‘doing’ addict and I like to keep busy and partly because, like everyone else, I still get caught up in what needs to be done. I also have an extraordinary sense of urgency meaning that things generally need to be done NOW. I get in my own way and my desire to go to the new Yoga classes, or to make time for a daily workout, or to simply go to the meditation room to relax or read, often goes by the way. I have not learned to say YES to the ‘being’ side of me nor have I learned to say NO to the ‘doing’ me. What a complicated paradox this poses!

What are you waiting for? What is it you really want? Are you ready to say YES to yourself and give yourself permission to do and be the things you most want in your life? If not now, when? Only YOU can make it happen. It is your life and whether you believe it or not, you are the boss of you.

Okay, I hear you, I am also guilty. Here is my pledge: I intend to start today by honoring my need for ME FIRST time. I am putting at least 2 yoga classes in my schedule for next week. I am reviewing my ‘bucket list’ this weekend and determining which of the items are my first priority. I am putting my trip to Baffin Island into the calendar. And I am dedicating at least fifteen minutes everyday to read. It may not be everything I want to say YES to and it is the first chewable chunk.

What are you saying YES to? Times a wastin’ as we say – no more hesitating.

I know I am not alone in this situation, that those of you who are reading this are probably nodding your heads as you share my conundrum. After considerable reflection, I have decided that this is what we need to learn. Not only do we need to be clear on our boundaries with others we need to also set some boundaries with ourselves. You can’t have work-life balance, which seems to be the catch phrase recently, without reigning ourselves in. Only then can we understand what we want to say YES to and then creating space for those important YES’s to actually happen.

For me this means stepping away from the office by 5:30 p.m. at the latest so I can head to my workout area or putting those Yoga classes right in my schedule so that the time is reserved. It means saying YES to the trips I want to make or dedicating time to the other items on my ‘bucket list’, knowing that without the YES it surely won’t happen. It means that when I simply want to sit down, catch my breath and read for a few minutes, I simply allow myself to do so.

Here was my other wake-up call and roadSIGN – a good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with ALS. This is a progressive illness commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, which slowly and insidiously steals your life from you. I am thinking, there but for the grace of God go I. SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS The Passionate Artist Since I have been spending time in the Southern United States I have had the opportunity to visit several of the Art Galleries both in North and South Carolina. Not major Galleries but important to the local artists and the Tourists visiting.

The Galleries were both large and small; artist run or full service Galleries with framing and art classes as well as a large selection of art. For the most part the south boasts of watercolour artists that follow the traditional style that has been around since I have been hanging out down here and before that for sure. There are a few oil painters and some experimental work but I am sad to report that although the art is beautiful and well executed I am having a hard time getting excited about it. My mentor felt the same as I did, wall after wall of ho hum art. So we asked ourselves why?

Then we walked into the Burrows & Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach and had our socks knocked off.

After we managed to pick our chins up off the floor we sat for a very long time in front of a large painting that just exploded with raw passion, colour and texture but mostly passion.

This was the work of a local Artist, Brian Rutenberg, who moved to the Big Apple to pursue creating his art. His work would be described as abstract expressionism using nature and landscapes as his subject but the excitement is in what he does with that subject. This is what will make art better no matter how good you really are; no matter how experienced; no matter what your education level. Passion is the great equalizer. Actually I miss spoke, it is what will raise you above the others.

Think about the passion of the work of Van Gogh; the singing of Janis Joplin; the guitar playing of Jimi Hendrix and I will never forget the on stage presence of Christopher Plummer in Oedipus Rex. They made their art with passion! Even recently I saw Chris Plummer in a movie and the man still has it, raw and unmistakable he loves what he does. Do you?

If you do great! If you don’t, you have a problem, one that you must fix as soon as possible. First try to identify what it is that has taken the passion out of your art, is it life’s obligations, too many disappointments or maybe it is just that you are in a rut. Whatever the reason you must accept this one important fact, without it you will lose your edge.

So what do you do to get the passion back? Without over simplifying it, remember why you wanted to do this art in the first place. Most of you won’t come up with an easily defined answer and it will distill down to a simple “Because it is who I am” or “What I always wanted to do”. If you think about it at some point in your childhood you saw or heard something that struck a note deep into your core being and knew that no matter what this was what you wanted to do. So go back to that place, go to a concert, watch a theatre performance, look at the work of some of the great ones and feel the need to make your art.

It just might be the spark you need to reignite the fire of passion in your Artistic Soul.

Did you know that most kids today don’t know how to relax? They go from being awake and living a very structured life (school, after-school activities, sports, dinner, homework, TV time, bed) to being asleep.

They experience this fast-paced world we all live in, the same way we do as adults. They feel the daily stress and pressures as well, however most children have not been taught coping strategies. As a matter of fact, most parents have not been taught coping strategies as well. Our state of wakefulness is a continuum that starts on the left at being fully awake to the right, being fully asleep. On this continuum, is the “relaxed state” and this is a skill/state that can be taught and learned. Baby and Kids Yoga accomplish many things but very importantly, yoga teaches coping skills and relaxation techniques.

Gordon Stokes, an educator and researcher stated that “80% of learning difficulties are related to stress. Remove the stress and you remove the difficulties”. Since kids and babies cannot clearly communicate that they are under stress, as caregivers we should assume they do in fact suffer from stress and then provide them with a method to cope and relax. The practice of Yoga has been proven to help babies and children in three different facets of their lives:

Benefits of Yoga through movement: 1) Physically: the yoga positions can help a child’s body by improving flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness. Modern Technology can put a child’s posture at risk. Yoga can help combat the risk by developing a strong structural foundation in the body. With improved strength and coordination comes increased self-esteem and self-confidence.

2) Mentally: Yoga can help a child relax and deal with stress. The breathing techniques can help the children concentrate better in school. A 2003 study

by California State University, Los Angeles, found that yoga improved children's behavior, physical health and academic performance, as well as attitudes toward themselves (Wall Street Journal).

3) Emotionally: Mastering yoga poses helps improve self-esteem and self-confidence in children. Paired-Yoga activities foster cooperation and compassion. Kids learn to help each other in difficult situations.

Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori schools states: “The development of the mind comes through movement”.

Babies and kids are meant to move. In the Kids Yoga class, we sing songs, play games, read and tell stories and act out the animals. We do yoga poses, learn relaxation and meditation techniques. In the Baby Yoga class, we do Mom Yoga and then focus on baby; singing songs and doing baby yoga moves to sooth the digestion system and to build the brain. All the skills and techniques can be taken “Off the Mat” giving Mom’s tools to use at home. Sydney - Part 1 Clare came in the other day and said: “Now remember to write on trip, trip“. I said, “What are you talking about?” Clare looked at me with surprise; “you know that trip that you were forced to take this summer. The one that cost and arm and a leg, as you put it.”

Okay, Okay, I will talk about it. Yes, that expensive trip to down under to Australia.

The plane ride was long, about fifteen hours from Vancouver British Columbia to Sydney Australia. Now if that wasn’t enough, when we landed they left us out on the tarmac so they could inspect the plane, or so they said. What a joke! These inspectors all covered in orange suits from head to toe, carrying a hose attached to some sort of can, came into the plane and opened up all the overhead bins and proceeded to spray some chemical over all of us and in the bins. While this was going on, the passengers just sat very quietly. You could hear a pin drop. After that we could leave the plane for the terminal.

Cornwall’s only Yoga Studio, offers a multitude of yoga classes daily, ranging from Hot Yoga, Kids Yoga, Baby Yoga, Senior Yoga and Hatha Yoga.

Now the Australians tell me, that this is to protect them from bugs, or insects coming into the country. What about the passengers who are subject to this spraying of the chemical? Does anyone care about them? Certainly not the Australian officials when you are entering that Country.

There is quite a maze to complete the inspection these officials want to give you when entering the country. You just had to be patient, and if you were not, then you waited a very long time. Even small items such as chocolate bars, or gum, had to be looked at, before they would give you the thumbs up or down. Luggage was then X-rayed, you could go on your way if everything was to their satisfaction. to be continued...

Operation Red Nose Cornwall a success!

In it's first year, Operation Red Nose Cornwall gave out 165 free rides. The operation was launched by the Kinsmen Club, and during the holiday season, it offered to bring people and their vehicles home from a Christmas party, bar, restaurant, or club. This operation represents the work of 67 volunteers and over 1300 hours of volunteering! Although the rides were free, Operation Red Nose Cornwall accepted donations. A grand total of $4150.00 was given to the Boys and Girls Club After school program. Congratulations on a successful program and getting people home safely over the holidays!

Helix are a Canadian hard rock/heavy metal band. They formed in 1974, and are best known for their 1984 single "Rock You", and the video for that song was played frequently on MTV. They were on A&M records and Capitol. Helix have toured with bands such as KISS, Aerosmith, Rush, Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, Heart, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P., Ian Gillan, and Motörhead among others. Their most recent studio album is 2009's Vagabond Bones.

Cornwall Police Chief Visits Gladstone PS for Family Literacy Day Cornwall’s Chief of Police Dan Parkinson visited Gladstone Public School today to help the school celebrate Family Literacy Day. Vice-Principal Joe Harty said Parkinson shared his thoughts on literacy, provided facts about the topic, and shared a quote from former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan.

“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope,” Parkinson shared.

He explained to the students that literacy is a very important part of his job, and the job that many police officers do to keep our city safe day and night.

He went on to explain that literacy allows us to deal with information in many ways. No matter what students choose to do later in life, there are certain literacy skills that they will need to have.

Harty said that although the ice rain made for a much smaller audience, it also provided students with the opportunity to speak with Parkinson, and ask any questions they had.

Students were impressed with one answer when Parkinson explained that visiting children in schools and the community was his favourite part of his job.

“We really need to get to know you younger people so that we can better serve you in your community,” said Parkinson.

Harty thanked Parkinson for coming and commented on how much the entire Gladstone community values this ongoing community partnership.

“We have always felt very lucky to have this positive partnership with Chief Parkinson and his staff, and we’re very thankful that they continue to support our literacy initiatives,” said Harty.

A NASPA RATED SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT IN CORNWALL Ottawa Scrabble Club versus Montreal Scrabble Club On Saturday, January 28th, competitive Scrabble players from Montreal, Ottawa and Cornwall swarmed the Cornwall Public Library. A prestigious tournament, a NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association) rated tournament took place, a battle between members of the greater part of Ottawa (Ottawa Scrabble Club) and members of the greater part of Montreal (Montreal Scrabble Club). Cornwall Scrabble members also eagerly joined in.

Forty-two players played in various divisions, according to their rating. As posted on www.crosstables.com, there were three rated divisions. Cross-tables.com is a site devoted to the world of competitive Scrabble.

Collins Event.

Players in this division consisted of no other than the Gretzkys and Richards of the Scrabble world, four elite Canadian players, champions on the Canadian, North American and World scene.These were Adam Logan, Joel Wapnick, David Boys and Jeremy Hildebrand.

2.

Division 1 (Players with a rating of 1300+) 14 players qualified to play in this division.

3.

Division 2 (Players with a rating of 1300-) 14 players qualified to play in this division.

Unrated Division For most Cornwall players and some Montreal and Ottawa players as well, this was a first time tournament adventure; consequently, an unrated category was formed. This was done with the intention of allowing players to decide whether they would like to join a more competitive organization like NASPA or remain as Casual Club players under the profile of the National Scrabble Association, where Cornwall Scrabble is presently registered.

All divisions played eight 25 min. games so this was an all day event where ”every word counted”. By 6: 30 p.m. computers had tallied up the results and the winners were announced.

As it is, the Ottawa Club won the trophy. The overall combined team result was 69.5 – 58.5 for Ottawa. Divisions A and B are represented in the ”total team statistics” file.

The Collins Division went 9 – 7 for Montreal.

In the Unrated Division, Cornwall players made their mark as the results show.

Norma O’Collin was acclaimed for the High Loss Norma Forsyth- High Win Carol Murdock came third.

Vivianne Panizzon, second and Roderick McDonald came first.

This Scrabble tournament was a first for Cornwall. Communications between Sue Tremblay, a certified Scrabble director and organizer of this major tournament, and Cornwall Scrabble director, Vivianne Panizzon had been ongoing since the Fall. A proposal was made to have this Scrabble tournament in Cornwall. Pierre Dufour, Cornwall Public Library Program Coordinator and Daphne Morris, Head of Adult Services, responded immediately to the possibility of having it staged at the Cornwall Public Library. And so it was.

All the groups look forward to having this as a regular annual event.

Nothing short of fabulous for the new SheConnex brand Last Tuesday, Cornwall witnessed the birth of what seems to be a very promising and much needed organization. SheConnex, a group promoting not only networking, but educating and empowering women via social, lifestyle and professional events, definitely will fill a need in the community. Whereas Women Entrepreneurs serves the female business community, SheConnex will unite women of all walks of life.

Karine Parthenais came up with the idea of SheConnex "in her living room, over a bottle of wine". She contacted her friend, Vanessa Regnier, to share the idea and discuss possibilities.

Vanessa wondered what it would entail to be involved and Karine stipulated that the only requirements were to be "Female and Fabulous". The seed was sowed.

The girls have a big vision. Zealous about their new venture, they want to bring the SheConnex brand everywhere in the area. "Our mission is to grow a culture of confident women, who have the ambition to pursue their life’s passion. Through social events and useful online tools, we are able to offer our members a welcoming environment to achieve their personal goals. Passionate about contribution to non-profit organizations, we pride ourselves on building strong connections within our operating regions."

And to say that they are passionate about contribution to non-profit organization would be an understatement. At their launch, the girls donated $1,000 to the Baldwin House, their Charity of choice.

What lies beneath

So it is pretty. But is it functional?

Very few people have an idea of the work that lies behind a website. Did you know that what is merely a visual stimuli to hundreds of people is actually the front-end of thousands of lines of code? Did you know that the little picture posted on your blog moments back, when saved, translates into a fairly long line of code that somewhat looks like this: "<img alt="valuevillage" src="/images/stories/advertisers/valuevillage.jpg" width="271" height="281" />". And that's in its simplest possible form too.

I bet you did not.

Why is this important, you will ask, now that anybody can "easily" make a site via content management systems such as WordPress, eliminating the need of a professional web designer? Because no matter how simplified, the fact of the matter is: programming code is behind it. And to work code, you need a coder.

In 2007, WordPress contained 80,000 lines of code. Joomla: 275,000. I can only imagine how many they bear today. If you build a website by yourself and play in the back-end configuration of it, you can pretty much mess up everything with the click of a button.

Newbies oftentimes delete necessary components of a program by mistake, and end up having to either start from scratch, or call a coder such as myself, to help them get the site back online. This ends up costing them a lot of time of money that they would not have had to spend had they hired a professional. Website design nowadays does not cost nearly as much as one would think and Content Management Systems can be setup by professionals in a manner to allow edits without risking havoc.

SPORTS SEEKER Warrior Fans at Cornwall Civic Complex Treated to 25 Goal Performance

The Akwesasne Warriors hosted the Delaware Federals in action tonight at the Ed Lumley Arena in the Cornwall Civic Complex. The Warriors moved across the St. Lawrence River to build their fan base for the remainder of the season. Delaware opened the scoring at the 3:55 mark on a goal by Alexander Tessier. Kris McCarthy tied the game up at the 6:06 mark of the period. Pierre Dagenais got onto the scoresheet two minutes later taking a cross checking minor and a fighting major after a battle with Robert Marion. Samuel Sanford Roy gave the Warriors their first lead of the night at the 11:00 mark. Delaware would not go away easily getting the equalizer from Tim Thomas, 27 seconds later.

MIguel Delisle gave the home team the lead to take to the dressing room scoring a goal at the 14:44 mark of the period. Ahmed Mahfouz, battled Robert Marion at the 15:50 mark of the first taking the instigator penalty and a game misconduct.

There is another issue I come across all the time: websites built in a static HTML template. Clients would have hired a student or a self proclaimed web designer (often a family member) who grab a static template to make the site look "purrrrty". The internet is dynamic, your website should be too. HTML is a thing of the past. Very few sites are done uniquely in plain HTML anymore. If you go with an HTML solution, you site will look decent, but do very little to attract customers, as no interaction will take place. It won't allow for you to edit it easily either.

When deciding to make a website, functionality should always be a top priority.

Hey! It's there, it's pretty, it's functional but nobody can find it!

Another extremely important reason to go with a pro is SEO. Search Engine Optimization is an art and very few people understand it fully.

NOBODY can guarantee you a top 10 search ranking. I don't care how much you pay, it's something that just can't be promised. There are too many variables involved. But what a professional can do is help crunch those variables and greatly improve your rank by optimizing your pages and making them search engine friendly. They will help you find the right terms and set realistic goals as well.

Whatever your passion is, don't spend your time away from it. Leave the task of creating a well balanced website to people whose passion is just that: building websites.

Akwesasne stormed out of the dressing room scoring four goals in the first nine minutes.

Johnathon St. Lousi started the four goal stretch at the 2:4 4 mark. Pierre Dagenais scored at the 4:01 and 8:27 mark to give the Warriors a four goal lead. Nicholas Corbeil scored his first of the game at the 9:04 mark before Anthony Mezzano responded for the Federals 1:05 later. Pierre followed up with a shorthanded goal to complete his hat trick at the 12:57 mark. Delaware cut back into the lead with a power play goal by Michael Guerra at 13:04 of the period. Nicholas Corbeil scored his second a short handed goal at 14:56 and Tim Thomas of the Federals responded with his second of the night at the 17:45 mark. Pierre Dagenais closed out the scoring in the period one minute later notching his 50 goal of his season in just 32 games.The Warriors took a 10-5 lead into the dressing room.

The Warriors opened the third period with a goaltender change, putting Jacob Lazore in nets, replacing David Plouffe. They continued their dominance on the scoresheet by scoring two goals in 10 seconds to open up the third. Nicholas

Corbeil completed his hat trick with a power play marker at the 0:41 mark and newcomer Dwayne Vacheco scored his first as a Warrior. Tim Thomas completed his hat trick at the 2:02 mark before Dwayne Vacheco scored his second in the period at 5:07 Sylvain Deschatelets scored a short handed goal at 6:29. The Feds got their power play marked back at 7:29 on a Simon Lauzon goal. Carter Trevasani scored at 8;14 and Samuel Sanford-Roy at the 16:17 mark. Pierre Dagenais had a 9 point night, he lit up the light for a fifth time, adding to his four assists, at 16:53 to complete the Akwesasne scoring. Simon Lauzon scored at the 19:02 mark for the Federals to close out the night's goal barrage. The Warriors top line of Dagenais, Corbeil and Dechatelets treated the Cornwall fans to a 19 point performance in the game. The Warriors next play a home and home series against the second place 1000 Island Privateers. The series opens at the Anowarako:wa Arena on Friday February 3 with the puck dropping at 7:35 and moves to Bonnie Castle in Alexandria Bay on Saturday Feb 4 with a 7:05 start.

CCVS to Host 9th Annual Super Bowl Party - Sunday, February 5 - 3:00 p.m.

The event, taking place at the Ramada Inn & Conference Centre, will feature a hot and cold “Surf & Turf” buffet with all of the trimmings.

Tickets are $50 per person, and must be purchased before February 1.

Proceeds from the event will help sponsor the CCVS football program.
