LEFT: Silhouette of Mrs. Bruce. Peggy O'Sullivan Bruce (died 1819), operated the St. Patrick's and St. Andrew's Inn on 1st Street on the present site of Cornwall Square's parking lot with her Scottish Loyalist husband Alexander during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A first-hand sketch of Peggy was provided by British Army surgeon Dr. William "Tiger" Dunlop while in Cornwall during the War of 1812. He wrote in his book "Recollections of the War of 1812" that "I would do gross injustice to my reader... were to I quit Cornwall without mentioning a most worthy personage, though in a humble station, was one of the best and most original characters I ever met...This was...my worthy hostess, of the principal log hotel Peggy Bruce." "It was my luck...to be a prodigious favourite with the old lady; but even favour with the ladies has its drawbacks...and one of these was being dragged to the bedside of every man, woman and child who was taken ill...At first I remonstrated against my being appointed physician extraordinary to the whole parish...but Peggy found an argument which, as it seemed perfectly satisfactory to herself, had to content me. What the d__l does the king ay you for, if you are not to attend to her subjects when they require your assistance?" "At the head of her medical dicta was that it was essential 'to support the strength.' That was to cram the patient with every kind of food that...he could be prevailed upon to swallow...A hot bath with herbs infused in it was another favourite remedy...Her concluding act at the breaking of consultation was generally to dive into the recesses of a pair of pockets the size and shape of saddle bags, from which she would fish up a couple of bottles of wine of which she deemed might be useful to the patient." "Peggy...possessed a keen vein of sarcastic humour, which often mae her both feared and respected. A Colonel...as brave a soldier as ever drew a sword, but too much of a martinet to be a favourite with the militia...Peggy, who respected his military talents at least as much as she disliked his hauteur, meeting him the day before his departure, addressed him with - 'Och! Colonel dear, and are ye going to lave us - sure there will be many a dry eye in the day you quit it." LEFT: Grace McLeod Roberts at her easel in her Cornwall Studio. Grace McLeod Roberts (1899 - 1982), was a teacher by profession and an artist from childhood. Born in Glengarry, she started teaching in the 1920s in a one-room school house. She subsequently attended the Ontario College of Education and the Ontario College of Art where she studied under Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven. Roberts now moved to Cornwall and taught both English and Art at CCVS and St. Lawrence High Schools for over 40 years. Known for her ability to recite Shakespeare she told a reporter that "When I could make one of those boys like and appreciate literature, it was heaven's first order for me. In her time, Roberts was known as Cornwall's "First Lady of Art." A painter, Roberts told reporter Linda Gilmour that "I paint because there is some urge in me that make we want to express myself in this medium." Roberts shared her appreciation of art by teaching night classes, Saturday children's programmes, directing the Cornwall Art Association and arranging art exhibits. BELOW LEFT: Alda MacKinnon in costume in front of the United Counties Museum in the Wood House (aka Cornwall Community Museum), on its original 2nd Street West location across from Domtar in Canada's Centennial year, 1967. Alda Arbuthnot MacKinnon was known by Cornwall's school children as "the nice lady at the museum." As the curator for the WoodHouse Museum from 1968 to 1990, Alda always said she "loved museum work and the people you meet, especially the children." Born on a farm in Cornwall Township, Alda was related to hundreds of people throughout the United Counties. She attended local Townships schools and upon graduation attended Cornwall Commercial College, and then obtained a job with the Civil Service in Ottawa for a short time. Mrs. MacKinnon went to work for the Children's Aid Society after her husband's death, and then took a training course about antique identification and restoration at Upper Canada Village. For here it was a short step to the Wood House. An oral historian, and genealogist, Jim Brownell aptly summed meeting for the first time. "I first met Alda MacKinnon, when, I interviewed her for a history class assignment. I called the museum to arrange an interview and the first words I remember Alda saying were "And what Brownell family are your from?" Knowing Alda as I got to know her...I found that she was greatly interested in family relationships and roots in those she met. With notebook in hand I arrived at the Wood House and was greeted by a most charming woman, one who made this young high school student welcomed...My interview with her was most interesting and I left with a notebook full of facts and the understanding that this lady was "Mrs. Cornwall and Area."

COFFEE GRINDS by Jason Setnyk
Kudos to Bowl for Kids Sake! The latest count says over $71,000 was raised last Saturday for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and area. The organizers of Bowl For Kids Sake did a fantastic job. Over 200 teams participated, and I was on the Rock N' Bowlers team with Sara Murphy and company. I had a fantastic time despite all those gutter-balls! New census shows full extent of Cornwall's growth! New census data released by Statistics Canada shows that the City of Cornwall grew by a grand total of 375 residents! With growth like that it could take decades before the City reaches the 50,000 mark. Unless of course City Council comes up with a good long term plan to attract new businesses and to diversify the economy. Decent jobs and quality of life are what attract people to move to a new City, and a larger tax base would mean lower taxes and/or increased services for everyone. I think one option worth considering is a Trades school right here in Cornwall, a skilled work force being trained in Cornwall could attract new jobs. Only Admins can post on City's Facebook page! The City of Cornwall's Facebook page is a diverse online community with over 5000 members. It was a great tool for communication, not just for posting City news, but people could post information about local events, and other important information such as bus cancellations. The page had a simple terms of use policy, to summarize, it said to talk respectfully and do not criticize people, businesses, and organizations in our community. It's not a soapbox, it's a tool for economic development. Simple and fair, but a small handful of people had difficulties respecting these guidelines. The logical course of action would have been to delete those few individuals who continuously broke the terms of use. Instead, City Administration over-reacted, and the decision was made that only administrators are allowed to post, and administrators are people who are employed by the City of Cornwall. The City of Cornwall has the right to do this with their Facebook page, however I strongly disagree with this decision. A lot of useful information and content will no longer be posted, and it's the 5000 members of this group that are losing out. Web poll caused a stir! Claude McIntosh wrote in the Standard Freeholder about a poll that appeared on the Cornwall Free News website that asked its readers this question: “Who do you think is the current or past most corrupt politician or city leader in the Cornwall, Ontario, area? The poll had names of some City Councillors, City Administration officials, politicians, business owners, and civic leaders. I think it was a loaded question. According to McIntosh some people in the City are now seeking legal advice. The web poll, which caused a stir, appears to have been taken down from the website. No International Art in the Park! Last summer Cornwall was offered sculptures in the park as a part of an international peace initiative stretching from our home town all the way to Chile. The $10,000 request to cover the cost of bases and plaques seems to be too high a price tag for the City budget. I hope money for arts and culture will be made available when a proposal for an arts and culture centre finally reaches the Council table.
Tombler not Anti-French! I don't think Dr. Tombler is anti-French when he criticizes the hospital's policy to only hire bilingual nurses. I believe his heart is in the right place, but I also believe bilingual candidates should be given preference. Notwithstanding that, qualified nurses should not be turned away simply because they are not proficient in French. I think there are some pragmatic solutions to meet the criteria of the French Language Services Act, and to still hire qualified nurses who may not speak perfect French. For instance, it could be made mandatory that English speaking nurses who are hired, must take French courses. Not every nurse has to be perfectly bilingual, but for French patients and clients, they should always be able to speak to a nurse who is fluently French. I think a more balanced approach needs to be established, that is fair to patients and also to nurses who have not mastered the French language. My name is Jason Setnyk, and these are my Coffee Grinds.

Hearts, Wheels and Paws The sun is shining brightly on this beautiful, albeit cool, crisp February day. It is the month with Valentine’s Day, Family Day, Winter Carnivals and plenty of activities; so get out there and enjoy. It is a great time to assess the beginning of the year as we soldier through the remainder of the winter and gleefully look forward to spring.
After a long-term relationship ended in the fall, this romantic month is not something I was looking forward to. The hearts and flowers are nice, but when you are not the recipient; you can’t be bitter, and you can’t be sad. Yes, there was a year shortly after my divorce that I felt like watching the Scream trilogy, but I am not feeling the anti-Valentine vibe. So if my coworkers and friends are graced with beautiful arrangements, jewellery, candy etc. I will be very happy for them. I am not anti-romance. Yes, it is harder time when I don’t have a significant other, but it is not impossible. It makes me that more appreciative of the small gestures and kind words everyday. Everything happens for a reason and like they say, sometimes things have to fall apart for better things to come together… I have people in my life that make me laugh and smile and are there for me. They are the ones I hold close in my heart. This is the month I emerge from my cocoon and become a bit of a social butterfly. Less than a week into the month and I have scheduled some dinner with friends, a girls’ day, a couple of activities and a few other outings that we are firming up details. Yes, it is time to get out there and connect with friends and family again. We all have busy lives but we have to make the time. Even if it means scheduling it several weeks ahead of time, go ahead and do it. An event in town has me feeling a little nostalgic, and gets the wheels turning, so to speak. The Seaway Roller Derby Girls are presenting a Valentine’s Roller Disco where people can don either the quad skates or the roller blades. When I heard about this, I invited both of my sisters to go with me, and they agreed. We still have skates, so we won’t have to rent them and talk about a blast from the past. My sister Lisa used to take me with her to Disco Wheels on a regular basis when I was in my preteen, early teen years. This was my escape, my place to soar and I loved it. I was even in a roller skating group and really enjoyed it. When we weren’t at the roller rink, we would skate in our neighbourhood and in the nearby school yard. We’d go early and practice our spins, jumps, tricks and routines. It was awesome. Mel was significantly younger, but she’d skate too. I am really looking forward to lacing up again. No I don’t think I’ll be as adventurous as I once was, but it will be a great event, several people involved with Disco Wheels will be there and it is fun for the entire family. Although I have rollerblades, I prefer the quad skates and still have my skates from way back when. I was really pleased when Family Day was introduced several years ago. In honour of the first Family Day, we adopted two cats; two sisters that are like ying and yang. One is very active but doesn’t enjoy company, and the other loves company, but is not very active; together they are inseparable black and white cats. They will be 4 years old, this Family Day, and so we celebrate them being in our family each year. There are so many pets in need of a good home. Over the years, my family and friends have adopted pets. They are great companions and can enrich your lives. Our local OSPCA has many special promotions and events for the month of February. Visit www.sdg.ontariospca.ca to learn more about the Paws and Give program and the Auctions for the Animals on Feb. 12 at the Ramada Inn. There is so much to do in our area, get out there and enjoy. It is a leap year, so take a leap of faith, try something new, embrace your life and be grateful for all your blessings. Follow Kris Ward’s blog at www: kriscrossroads.wordpress.com

JennFit HEALTHY TIP: Get Enough Sleep~ Getting enough sleep is especially important when you exercise. Aim for 7-9 hours each night. Sufficient sleep is essential for muscle growth and repair. A lack of sleep can affect your mood and increase hormonal stress levels, which will have a negative effect on your body.
JennFit HEALTHY RECIPE:
Ingredients: 3 cups fresh organic cilantro leaves 1 organic garlic clove 1 large can of organic chickpeas, rinsed & drained 1 ripe organic avocado, roughly chopped 3 tablespoons organic olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh organic lemon juice sea salt & fresh ground pepper organic lemon wedges for serving
Directions: Combine garlic clove with cilantro leaves in the food processor and process until finely chopped. Add the chickpeas & avocado and continue processing. While the processor is running, slowly pour a steady stream of the olive oil into the mixture. Add lemon juice and continue until smooth. Season with sea salt & pepper and serve with a lemon wedge and a few cilantro leaves. Enjoy!
JennFit Exercise: Position your hands shoulder width apart on a secured bench. Move your feet out as far out in front of you as possible and place on another bench. Place a weight plate over your hips and quads (I use 45 lbs). Straighten out your arms and keep a little bend in your elbows in order to always keep tension on your triceps and off your elbow joints. Slowly lower your upper body down towards the floor and keep your elbows tucked into your sides. Once you reach the bottom of the movement, slowly press off with your hands and push yourself back up to the starting position with your triceps. Try 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

Naturally Delicious ... with the Health Nut
Movie and TV show characters to love on Valentine's Day With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s worth taking a look at the television shows and movies where the couples depicted are actually believable in their relationships. It’s all about chemistry, whatever role you’re playing and that successful chemistry isn’t as common as you’d think. In that light, here are some couples I think mesh perfectly together. This week I’ve chosen to talk to you about natural alternatives to personal products and why I use them. Most of the following products can be purchased at Baxtrom’s in the health and beauty aisle in the organic section. The first product that I wish to talk about is the anti-perspirant or deodorant. I always purchase Tom’s aluminum-free deodorant. Why aluminum free you ask?? Because women shave their arm pits regularly (more of a chance of cutting the skin) the aluminum has a better chance of being penetrated into the blood stream. There have been studies done to compare the rate of breast cancer in other countries where they live in a more “natural way” (Italy, Germany, France etc…) where women often do not shave…they have a lower rate of breast cancer. When you have a mammogram, you are asked not to wear deodorant right?? When x-rays of breast cancer are seen…often times there is also aluminum found in that area?? One very important thing to remember is that everything that you put on your skin is automatically taken into your blood stream…it’s all connected…the following link is very interesting. http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/aluminumand-breast-cancer/ I use Tom’s fluoride-free natural toothpaste. . They are all great tasting; peppermint, spearmint, fennel is my personal favorite (black licorice). My son uses it as well, when asked if he wants the fluoride treatment at a dental appointment…he tells them “why would I do that??I use fluoride-free toothpaste. Now how can you argue with that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSKToTFitd0 I haven’t worn perfume in 4 years, I am now at the point that if I smell perfume or after shave on others it really bothers me…I like using the Avalon organic brand shampoo and conditioner, just smells so fresh. I use organic, coconut based shaving gel for my legs, I especially love the one at Natural Food Pantry (Billings Bridge Mall, corner of Riverside and Bank St in Ottawa). I love to use the organic natural olive oil based soap bars “Neolia” that I purchase at Costco…so worth it…really gives you nice soft skin….http://www.neolia.com/

Leonard and Penny in The Big Bang Theory: He’s the genius science nerd; she’s the pretty barely educated girl next door. They started out as friends, then became lovers, broke up and this season have gotten back together again – sort of. As acted by Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, the pair is, perhaps, the most convincing of all TV screen couples, a seemingly mismatched pair who may have more in common with each other than they thought. Long married, Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) from Modern Family are probably the most authentic married couple on television. They get on each other’s nerves, tweak each other and squabble often but you just know they’ll be together through thick and thin. Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca. The hard-bitten expatiate American nightclub owner and his Norwegian ex-lover makes beautiful music together during the chaos and terror of the Second World War. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman’s pairing, in a movie that was largely made up as it went along and was originally to star Ronald Reagan (!) and Ann Sheridan in the leads, is a miracle movie that still resonates today. Possibly the greatest tragic love story of them all. For sheer, sizzling sexual chemistry, the on again, off again relationship between lawyer Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and her boss Will Gardner (Josh Charles) on The Good Wife can’t be beat. Their sexual attraction took two whole TV seasons to be consummated only to fall asunder when Alicia, out of guilt at neglecting her family, ended it. But their feelings for each other are still there so who knows what will still happen between them? Theirs is one of the best elements of a consistently terrific series. Condemned to live his life backwards, from old age to infancy, Benjamin (Brad Pitt) falls in love with Daisy (Cate Blanchett) but, once undergone, their relationship inevitably can’t last as Benjamin becomes younger and younger while Daisy ages. The epic scope and dazzling special effects of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button can’t obscure the deeply touching love story at its core. It’s unforgettable. Happy Valentine’s Day! A graduate of Ryerson University’s School of Journalism, former West End Montrealer Shlomo Schwartzberg is a veteran film critichas regularly reviewed films for various publications and lectures on film and TV studies. He was the director of programming for the Toronto Jewish Film Festival for eight years.

ART SEEKERS by Sandra Taylor Hedges
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS Artist to yourself, above all be true!
Annual Juried Exhibition Results 2012
Today an artist friend of mine, who is new to the business of Art, asked me an important question. This is a question that all artists face sooner or later in their careers, the question of copying another artist’s work.
This year we received approximately 100 submissions from almost 40 different artists from both the local community and out reaching areas as well. The awards ceremony was bustling with many artists, supporting friends and family, general public and press.
If a potential customer comes to you and asks you to paint a Picasso or a Rembrandt painting for them to hang over their bed; perform a part in a stage play exactly like Lawrence Olivier with no room for other interpretation; sing like Michael Jackson or Alanis Morrissette, which you may sound a little like, and to dress and perform like them for their event. Do you do it?
The first prize went to Carole Jeghers for her work, "Spectators #1" in the medium of Oil Mix.
The Cornwall Regional Art Gallery is pleased to announce the winners of the Annual Juried Exhibition 2012.
First of all I would like to say that my answer to that question is my opinion only as I am not your conscience. In the end you are the only one that will live with the future outcome of this for or against. What I will say, however, is why would you want to? Artists are often, until they reach some level of fame, the most underpaid for their talents of any profession in the world today and to add insult to that there is a line-up of people out there ready to exploit us because they know we want to be moving up the ladder of success to live by our art.
My husband has often remarked to me that at art festivals and events everyone but the artists are making money and sometimes he is not wrong. We can be seduced by the lure of painting or performing just for the money, after all no one will see this if they only hang it in their home. There is big business in tribute artists in the music business, for example here in Myrtle Beach there is a theatre dedicated to the look and sound alike Cher, Michael and Elvis impersonators and they are packed. My question to them would be this, “If you sing that well, why not sell yourself, your way, your style?” If you paint well enough to copy the best, why not sell your painting; your acting ability; your way?
Second prize went to Erica Taylor for her sculpture, "City."
The short answer is simple, confidence. It all goes back to feeling that you just as you are is not good enough, that you have to be like someone else to be recognized. Don’t fall into that trap. Believe in yourself and your dreams. Give you a chance to shine. It’s OK to learn from the masters of your craft. This may mean to wear the persona of a famous person in your art for a little while, try them on like a coat and wear it to see how it fits, but try several and then squish them down, swirl them around and shake it out. Now it is you, and you are the best of them all and a lot of yourself which is in my opinion better! So when someone comes to me with a picture of another artists work, saying paint me a Picasso I say, no! If you would like a painting done in the cubist style, I will paint you a S. Taylor Hedges. It will definitely be better after all Picasso taught me everything he knows, as did Braque, Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Danby, Bigelow, Powers, Sargent, Odjig, Morrisseau……...whew I could go on for days. COMFORT IN CONVERSATION WITH V.
....The Little Black Dress I’ve always been the type of girl that likes to dress up, actually, I’m always the one who dresses up when everybody else doesn’t and my friends love tease me about it. In all honesty, I have a problem leaving my house without heels on. Yes, I know, in the dead of winter this is not a very ‘practical’ (I will admit that I have slipped and fallen this year, in about 5 inch heels down my driveway and no I have not learned my lesson... I KNOW I KNOW, I’m asking for it!) I just can’t help myself! They make that outfit you’re not sure about look THAT much better and let’s face it, they just make us feel oh so pretty (beside the killer feet at the end of that night out!) they add just the right amount of ‘magic’ to that little black dress.
Kathy Smart - Local girl gone BIG! Kathy Smart, born and raised in Cornwall, is the chef,
nutritionist and host of North America's first gluten-free cooking show, "Live the Smart Way", which can be seen on Rogers Ottawa Daytime TV and A channel, where she teaches, motivates and inspires others with healthy recipes and healthy living tips. Kathy has written and published four cookbooks with a special emphasis on gluten free and dairy free choices.
When I think of the ‘Little Black Dress’ I think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's, looking so elegant, classy with a little twist of sexy. Audrey Hepburn set a tone for all women with that movie that I like to call fresh and fabulous! Women from all over the world were sporting the hairstyle, the big round black sunglasses and of course the perfectly fit little black dress. In a women’s closet there are always some must have’s that are not only a necessity but are also the base of a wardrobe that can get you out of any “I have nothing to wear” situation... Which is what I like to call “I’m Having a fight with my closet” day/night! My top 5 items are simple, classy with flair of sexy of course! They are:
1. The Little Black Dress (that wasn’t obvious was it?) either a little above the knee or right on the knee, which can allow you to wear it during the day or for the evening. With a little accessorizing such as bangles, sunglasses, or even some feminine earrings, and a fabulous pair of heels, you’ve got yourself a killer outfit! 2. The Black Blazer. I’m not talking with shoulder pads, I’m talking the boyfriend style type blazer that is feminine, flattering to all body types that can be worn on top of a dress, with a skirt, denim and heel... The list could go on. A black blazer can add that business flair to your outfit or can be sweet and sexy with some skinny jeans and a pump or stiletto. 3. Black Pumps/Stilettos. SO important! New Project to Assist Break & Enter Victims No one expects to be a Break and Enter (B&E) crime statistic. It is very common for a victim of Break and Enter to experience many emotions, fears and stress as a result of this type of offence. In partnership with Justice Canada, Victim Services of SDG&A with the support of local police services have developed a Break & Enter pilot project to better assist victims of B & E. This project consists of ensuring that B&E victims receive support and information to help ease their concerns, answer any questions they may have and provide security recommendations. Victims of a B&E can be sent an information package by mail as a first step. A comprehensive B&E booklet has also been developed with information which includes: common reactions to a B&E, things that you can do that may help, common reactions in children, helping children cope, as well as home security and helpful local resources/business listings (i.e. police services, locksmiths, alarm companies, glass companies etc.). B&E victims receiving the information will also be called for a follow-up by Victim Services and offered support, referrals as well as the opportunity to receive a free Home or Business Security Audit performed by trained members of the Police Services or Victim Services. Members of Victim Services have been formally trained in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The purpose of this project is to support and assist victims of a B&E as well as offer recommendations on how to better protect their home and property. Recommendations are done based on the concepts used through CPTED, the process whereby one manipulates the physical environment to produce the desired behavioural effects. By providing some basic target hardening recommendations, it is anticipated that homeowners/business owners can take some easy, economical steps to protect themselves from further incidents. “This is a wonderful new initiative funded by Justice Canada and we hope to be able to provide the support and assistance that victims of B&E need and deserve” states Diane Plourde, Executive Director of Victim Services. “People often don’t realize the traumatic effect a B&E can have on individuals, including children. It is a violation of one’s private space. We want to be able to assist victims in dealing with what has happened and help them feel more secure”.

HEART STRINGS February always seems to stir up the love feeling and possibly the lack of love we feel. Everywhere we go, Valentine’s Day is a reminder to share our love with those near and dear to us. So many decisions, for the perfect card that expresses how you feel about your loved one and how much that person means to you, deciding on chocolate or flowers, maybe both. Do you go out for a romantic dinner or cook a romantic dinner at home? For those in a relationship, the choices are endless and the cost of expressing our love can also seem endless. Don’t get me wrong, I celebrate Valentine’s Day, even when I didn’t have a significant other in my life, I celebrated. It is one day a year that is marked on the calendar that gives us open rein to express our love, be creative and maybe even be a little extravagant. I wish everyday was marked on the calendar with a heart, as a reminder for us to say and show love, not just to our significant other, but to everyone in our life, yes, that includes YOU. It would not be about spending money and giving gifts, it would be about three powerful words “I Love You”, acts of kindness, being compassionate, understanding and supportive, each and everyday. Let’s not wait for one day a year…to make love a big deal…How about a Valentine’s resolution to share your love each and everyday, no matter how busy or rushed you are, take time to show your love. Until next time, I wish you a very Happy Valentine Day(s) ahead filled with love and kindness! Follow my blogs http://thesizzlecoach.wordpress.com

Sydney - Part 2 Clare came in the other day and said: “Now remember to write on trip, trip“. I said, “What are you talking about?” Clare looked at me with surprise; “you know that trip that you were forced to take this summer. The one that cost and arm and a leg, as you put it.”
Cornwall Lift-Off Seeking Submissions for Musical Acts
Okay, Okay, I will talk about it. Yes, that expensive trip to down under to Australia. (Continued from last week) Apart from entering the Country, Australia is a great place to see although it is VERY EXPENSIVE. Don’t think you can live on 35.00 dollars a day, because you cannot.
Oh, I forgot to tell you why it was so expensive to take the trip in the first place. My friend decided to marry a fellow from Australia she met on the Internet. She asked me to give her away in marriage. I was thrilled, and started saving, and also knew that I would probably have to take a loan in order to pay for such a long trip. This I did. Just before going, she calls and tells me the wedding is off. To say the least, I was shocked! What to do! Do I continue or cancel the plans. Some of the arrangements where made on the Internet, and you have to pay in advance, and since everyone was sure the wedding was on, as we had all seen the fellow, none bothered to buy cancellation protection for rooms and trips within trips in the country. If I stayed home, all that would go down the drain, so I just decided I might as well go and see the country. Now back to Australia. The city of Sydney is huge, larger in population than any city in Canada. Yes, the Opera house is down by sea/harbour and is worth seeing, not so much for it, as for all the action that takes place around it. People playing ancient instruments and selling C.D’s and others selling ice cream, tourist stuff, and then you can sit by the bay and enjoy a coffee and something to eat. Also near this area is a street of many old buildings from past years selling articles that one could pack to take home. I just bought postcards as I had only carry-on luggage due to restrictions on airlines within the country. I also saw a Baha’i temple up in the hills which overlooks the city. This nine sided building is made of, I think, cement with intricate patterns on it and is set in the woods just off a highway. It allowed some time for an reflection and quiet solitude in otherwise very busy day. My time was short in Sydney, and one picked and chose what people suggested I should see. This way I was able to see some hilly countryside and sights around the main part of the city, as well as some of the inner city and ocean view. Food was not cheap, although it was tasty. Just to give you an idea of the expense, coffee was four dollars and no refills. If you wanted more you paid for it and in some areas coffee was five dollars. A scone could be five, six dollars. It was good, but not cheap. It might have been more acceptable if their money was on par with ours, but their money was worth more, and at the time I went our money was worth 104.00. So you can see how everything cost. When in these cities the best way to get around is to get a day pass on trams or buses, otherwise you will break your pocket book. I forgot to tell you about the hotels. Some are very expensive and others that are large hostels, are cheaper. The small hotels are very good. If you wanted to be close to the Chinese market it would be wise to locate there in a hotel. The city is spread over a large area with many bays between, so that travelling to each area can take time. One could go on and on, but this gives you a little idea what it was like, so till next time “ Melbourne a city for tourists”.
