launches Marketing Booster Program for small business owners in Cornwall The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) will launch the Marketing Booster Program to help Cornwall companies develop solid marketing strategies. The first session of this affordable results-oriented program starts Wednesday, March 21 and is designed to support local growing businesses with limited marketing resources. “Increasing top line sales ranks high on the small business agenda, so we developed the Marketing Booster Program to specifically address this need," says Angela Besner, Account Manager, at BDC. (pictured left) "Small businesses will initially grow using an ad-hoc marketing approach, but they eventually need a structured strategy to ensure long term profitability and access new markets." The Marketing Booster Program is a 12-week project that combines small group sessions and extensive one-on-one coaching. The group format is cost-effective and allows participants to effectively share their experiences and brainstorm with like-minded entrepreneurs. "Group dynamics is one of the most effective aspects of the Marketing Booster Program and we already have clients who rave about their increase in sales after having completed our program," adds Besner.

as we prepare for the I Am Woman show - March 4th - Cornwall Civic Complex

There are more than 10,000 images at the Cornwall Community Museum. If you are interested in learning more about our history, the museum has a wide selection old and modern local histories for sale, . LEFT: Dorothy Donihee reviewing her manuscript, "In My Mother's Footsteps." Dorothy (Tilton) Donihee (1928 - 88), was born in the Smitville (a Cornwall suburb replaced by Domtar"s Paper Machine No. 6, 1958 - 60). Mrs. Donihee was a pioneer builder of the Catholic Women's League. Revered Gary Ostler said, "When the League was in its infancy she was instrumental in giving it body and substance...she was the President of the St. Columban's League, the Diocesan president, Ontario President and National President. For her work she received the Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1956 and had an audience with Pope Paul VI in 1967 when she represented the World's Conference of Women's Organizations in Rome. A tireless volunteer Mrs. Donihee was involved with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Community Chest (United Way), the MacDonell Memorial Hospital and Cornwall Senior Citizen's Club. She served as director of the Chidren's Aid Society, the Cornwall Housing Authority, the Cornwall Planning Board and Advisory Board of Guaranty Trust. Mrs. Donihee worked in real estate, but most significantly for the historic record she wrote the book "In My Mother's Footsteps" posthumously published by the Wood House Museum (copies may still be purchased), about growing-up in the Cornwall suburb of Smithville and its eventual removal for Paper Machine No. 6. RIGHT: Teacher and politician Pat (Patterson) Armstrong (1922 - 2005) was known by her fellow Cornwall City Councillors as Council's "voice of reason." As Cornwall's second female elected official, she served three two year terms from 1977 to 1982 with Mayor Gerry Parisien. A teacher at CCVS, Pat was also president of the Cornwall Golf and Country Club, Cornwall Curling Club, Cornwall General Hospital Women's Auxiliary, a founding member of the Canadian Federation of University Women, Chair of the Cornwall Housing Authority, and volunteer for both the Children's Aid and Canadian Cancer Societies. BELOW: If we lived in the United States Mary "Granny" (Whitmore) Hoople, (1767 - 1858) would be the subject of numerous films and biographies. As it is she lived in the Lost Village of Dickinson's Landing. The stuff of frontier legends, Mary Whitmore was kidnapped and her younger brother by a Delaware war party during the American Revolution. During her seven years of captivity Mary was adopted by a medicine woman and learned the language and traditional native medicine, while her brother John disappeared. Facing starvation the Delawares journeyed to British held Fort Detroit to trade 18 year old Mary for food. She was now indentured for a year to a local French-Canadian family where she practiced traditional healing and learned French. Mary now heard about her mother's brother Jacob Sheets from a Lutheran Pastor who told her that her Loyalist uncle had settled on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River near the Long Sault Rapids and was trying to obtain information about her lost nieces and nephews. She was released from her indentureship and traveled with the Pastor and a group of voyageurs to her mother's family, Mary arrived in 1788. Known as the "Hungry Year," she showed the Loyalist settlers how to survive eating roots and bulbs. She also met Henry Hoople. The couple now married and Mary set about learning her native German and teaching the others about edible roots and foods and started practicing traditional medicine making her the settlement's only "doctor" until a trained doctor arrived in 1811. The couple lived on Hoople's Creek where they raised eleven of twelve children. During the Battle of Crysler's Farm, Mary tended to the wounds of an American soldier and years later was commended for "her compassion and bravery" by the American government and given a substantial cash reward. Active all of her life, in 1851 Mary and a son William traveled on business to Toronto and learned about a man kidnapped by the Delaware Indians and adopted by Captain Servos of the Butler's Rangers. Curious, William visited the man who turned out to be his long lost uncle. He now arranged for John to take a steamship to meet his sister and now blind 101 year old uncle Jacob Sheets for a family reunion 70 years in the making.

LEFT: Huguette Burroughs (1949 - 2005), author, journalist, community volunteer, politician, recipient of the Order of Ontario, l'Ordre des francophones d'Amerique, and Governor-General's Medal. Board member for Glen-Stor-Lodge, Cornwall NonProfit Housing, the Municipal Advisory Committee and the Cornwall Community Hospital Board. She worked with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Legal Clinic, the United Way, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and was instrumental in establishing Cornwall's French language CHOD-FM and helped those who couldn't, fill out government assistance forms. Author of the book "La Radio Lagre Tout." On learning of her death at age 55, from complications from diabetes in April 2005, longtime friend and Legal Aid lawyer Eitienne St. Aubin said" "We often think of greatness as something that is far away, not close to us. But we had greatness right under our eyes in this woman who taught us that life is to be celebrated." Marie Cadieux, with the National Film Board is seen talking with Huguette Burroughs, second from right and Mayor Phil Poirier, right, prior to filming a 30-minute documentary profiling Burroughs in 1990.

COFFEE GRINDS

This might be satire! I want to help my conservative friends who believe the Drummond Report or who want to have their municipal taxes cut. I have a very modest proposal to assist you in your endeavour. The only way you can evoke change and show these fat cats you are serious is to not be a hypocrite. If you do not believe in public services paid with taxes, you should not use them, and it is as simple as that! You need to show your contempt for the system, and that you strongly believe in your convictions. Therefore do you not leave your garbage at the curb, bring the garbage to the dump yourself! Also, disconnect your toilet from the municipal sewer system. If a snow plow goes down your street, chase it away with a pitch fork and a clenched fist. Do not send your children to publicly funded schools. If you need to go to the hospital, refuse to use your health card, and use your credit card instead. Last, but not least, refuse to pay your taxes! You might go to jail for this act of civil disobedience, but that is not an excuse to be a leech on the system. Demand to pay the full bill for your incarceration. If you follow these simple steps, it will be the greatest revolution since the tea party (or roll up the rim), and it will shake the very foundations of this great country!

My name is Jason Setnyk, and these are my coffee grinds.

Jason Setnyk is a local high school teacher, journalist, published and award winning author, photographer, arts and culture event coordinator, and a community volunteer sitting on numerous boards and committees. p.s. I would like to share a letter to the editor written by Brian Lynch concerning the Drummond Report. Warning: The following editorial is factual, analytical, and logical. Therefore it may be offensive to some people. Letter to the Editor on the Drummond Report by Brian Lynch: The Drummond Report on Ontario’s Public Services with its massive spending cuts to essential public services fails to provide a balanced approach to eliminate the province’s deficit by 2017-18. It ignores the revenue side of balancing the budget and makes no mention of creating a fairer tax system and a job creation strategy to grow the Ontario economy. At the present time, both the Ontario Government and the Federal Government spend billions of dollars a year on tax benefits for profitable corporations and the wealthiest one per cent who need help the least. If everyone is to tighten their belts, then the profitable corporations and the top one per cent should pay their fair share of taxes. In Ontario, if the corporate tax giveaways were restored to the 2010 level, $8 billion would be available over the next four years for much needed public services and programs such as healthcare and education, the creation of good jobs, the reduction of poverty, and deficit reduction. Study after study shows that the billions of dollars in corporate tax cuts to the large, profitable corporations are not creating new jobs. The best way to help create good jobs is to provide tax credits to businesses that create new jobs instead of handing money to companies that ship jobs out of the country.

Rock for Charity Two-Year Anniversary show is Friday March 9th at La Maison! Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk The two year anniversary show of Rock for Charity is Friday March 9th 2012 at La Maison in Cornwall. The 18th installment of Rock for Charity hosted by event organizer and founder Jason Setnyk will benefit the Canadian Children's Aid Society of SDG. Booked to play Friday November are Rodney Rivette, Kings Bishop (acoustic set with Marc and Adam), Brendan John Mason, and more TBA. About $8000 has been raised in grand total for various charities and non profit groups including the Agape, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Baldwin House, OSPCA, and Tri-County Literacy Council just to name a few. All are charities and non-profit groups that make Cornwall and SDSG a better community. Every month musicians, bands, and artists volunteer to perform and play. “We've had well established musicians like Graham Greer, Melanie and The General Electryk, and Sara Murphy and play these shows. Previous Rock for Charity shows have also been the stage for up and coming talent like Tracey Lalonde and Keegan Larose. It's amazing how much talent we have in the Cornwall area, and how many artists will volunteer to play for a worthy cause”, says Setnyk. Admission Friday March 9th at La Maison is a $5 donation, doors are at 9pm, and the show is 19+. All money collected is going to the Children's Aid Society of SDG. More info on the Children's Aid Society of SDG: http://www.cassdg.ca/ Also check out more show listings on the Cornwall Underground: http://www.cornwallunderground.com

There are also many ways that the McGuinty Government could spend taxpayers’ money better and smarter. For example, the Ontario Government should reduce its reliance on high-priced consultants and place a cap on public sector CEO salaries. By cutting consultants by half, the Ontario Government would save $500 million over the next four years and the cap on public sector CEO salaries would save $80 million over the same time period. In the healthcare sector, greater emphasis should be placed on investing in frontline care and on keeping people healthy and greater use should be made of nurse practitioners and midwives. By taking a balanced approach to balancing the budget, we can build a better, more equal Ontario that puts people first. -Brian Lynch

You will most likely need: save the dates (optional), wedding invitations (with envelopes), thank you cards, and possible other personal stationery - TIP: When it comes to planning your wedding there is nothing that makes more of a first impression than the invitations you mail out to your family and friends. What you say and how you say it on your invitations is for many couples, their first introduction as the bride and groom. Your invitations should reflect the personalities of the couple and the type of event that you want to have. It is also a good idea to incorporate the wedding location into the design of the cards. Whether your wedding is on a sandy beach in Hawaii or in the backyard of your childhood home, your invitations should represent where you and your soon-to-be-spouse will be tying the knot. You also want to give your guests an insight into what they can expect and even how formal they should dress. Think about the style of wedding you want to have and how formal it will be and this will help you decide how the invitations will look.

This One is for The Girls Friendships are an essential part of life, and some of the best friendships I have are with women. Yes, like the Martina McBride song, “This One is For the Girls.” The ladies and women of all ages that I count as my friends. I am still very close to some of my highschool friends and that long-term bond will never sever. We knew each other through the awkward years and have shared the laughter and the tears. We are there for each other, no matter what. Sometimes we are guilty of not reaching out as often as we should, but when one needs the other, we will talk as long as it takes, vent, celebrate the good news and triumphs, and laugh until our face hurts. Friendships can begin at any age. I also have formed some very close friendships in recent years and they are equally important to me. These ladies are supportive, nurturing, funny and absolute gems.

I recently enjoyed a lovely dinner with three other women. We are all at different stages and yet we found a way to connect and share in each other’s lives. We celebrate the accomplishments, discuss future opportunities and really converse about life and the journey. It started by casual conversation of ‘let’s go out to dinner sometime’ and then we set a date and made it happen. I need to arrange more of these outings. I left the restaurant feeling wonderful about the night and revelled in the discussions with these strong and smart ladies. These wise women have helped me see that I am on the right path. I also enjoyed “Girls’ Day” last weekend with one of my best friends. We relished a leisurely lunch at The Grind with copious amounts of coffee and then followed up with an afternoon of laughs, serious moments, shared concerns, discussions of aspirations and ended it with plans to have a getaway soon. I really needed that. We were a little silly at times, but it was fun.

Recently I had a beautiful symbolic dream which I mentioned to some of my closest friends. Within 20 minutes I had a full interpretation of the dream plus their own ideas of the meaning. That is friendship! We notice the little things and revel in the mutual ideas and thoughts. From suggesting makeup tips, to clothing recommendations, sharing recipes and relationship and child rearing tips; these friendships are essential. We send jokes, quotes, make suggestions, talk about movies, tv shows and music we like. From a simple message or an outing, these little connections nourish the soul. We compliment each other, and dole out advice. We are the sounding board, the voice of reason and the rowdy partners-in-crime. We bring out the best and remind each other that no matter what size, how many wrinkles or grey hairs or what our status is; we are beautiful. Friends can be the mirror to reflect upon. They will give their opinions, support your decisions (even if they don’t agree), be there when the pieces fall apart, when you lose a job or promotion you really want, when a marriage or relationship ends, when a parent is ill, suffer a death of a loved one, and battle illness. They have discussions about children and everything in between; these are just some examples when these female ties are so important. True some female relationships are rocked by jealousy, catty behaviour, backstabbing and vicious comments, but if you find those real true friends, they are the solid ground in the middle of an earthquake. Yes I have some wonderful male friends who I admire as much as my female friends, but the relationships and the dynamics are different. A good balance is to find some truly trustworthy male and female friends. Like Oprah Winfrey said: “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” I know who mine are, and I cherish every last one of them.

JennFit by Jennifer Christoff

JennFit HEALTHY TIP:

OUT OF FLOW Yes, most of us can admit we allow ourselves to get out of flow on occasion. What is out of FLOW you ask? I am referring to triggers; situations or conversations that take place that involve us, or maybe we make them about us. Sometimes we go into denial and play the blame game, pointing our finger at anyone but ourselves. These reactions or behaviors cause us to be in direct conflict with…you guessed it…YOU, and this is when we get out of flow. Triggers cause us to experience fear, anger or hurt, all connected and all play a very important role when we are out of flow. Take a few minutes and think about the last time something triggered you. What emotion did you feel? Did the initial emotion cause you to feel other emotions? When we are out of flow, we need to ask ourselves two very important questions, is this “the Truth “or is this “a story”. If we can determine quickly which place we are in, we will be in a better position to get back into the FLOW. What is a story? A story is simply what we have created in our mind, it may be based on our past or it may be a new story we create. This story takes over our rational thinking and we spin out of flow that is if we do not catch ourselves doing this. Let me give you an example of me being out of flow, in order to assist you when you see yourself heading in this direction. This example is somewhat fabricated to assist you with your story and truth.

I come home from grocery shopping, which I did by myself, some of the items I really wanted were not available, so I drove around to get these items, I was feeling frustrated that I had to go by myself and get the groceries, not to mention having to go to more than one store, and on top of all this, I over spent. When I arrived home, arms full of shopping bags, I struggle to open the door, when I finally get the door open, my son (he is the example) is stretched out on the coach watching TV.

Are you getting where I am going? Yes, OUT OF FLOW, I was already allowing myself to be out of flow as I did my shopping, the story was playing in my head. So what happens next? I make my son very much aware of all I went through to bring home groceries, and then I continue the story, by pointing out the dirty dishes and the socks on the floor. That’s” the story”! Now what is “the truth”? Did I ask my son to come with me grocery shopping? NO, did I ask him to make sure to pick up the dishes and socks before I got home from groceries? NO, did he create the chain of events while shopping? NO. So, before we start to go out of flow, it is important to step back and ask ourselves is this a story or truth? One thing that was very important during my journey to a better life was to get rid of all the negativity in my life. When I was at my worst shape ever, I was going to the casino regularly, drinking 5 double/doubles each day, drinking wine and coolers etc…. I am living proof that you can turn your life around and show everyone that matters to you that you can and will do it. Nothing like reaching your goal, feeling great about yourself and really showing people that you are serious about living your best life ever!!

OFF THE MAT with Lisa Blanchard

Naturally Delicious ... with the Health Nut

Once in a while I will meet people and they say “Hey Sylvie, you are still maintaining your weight?. This makes me realize that people think that one day I will go back to my old unhealthy habits. I tell them that I have made a lifetime commitment to myself and my family to maintain this healthy lifestyle and try to help others change their ways as well…I am not ever going back to the way I was…sick and uncomfortable in my skin…I have come too far, for too long to ever go back. This is who I am, I feel great, happy and I finally like “ME” for all that I am. Thanks to the amazing encouragement of my husband, son, family and friends, I was able to make this goal become reality.

I Choose To Be That! I know two people. One person has been separated a year from her husband. Every time you talk to her, she is complaining about how he left her, how she has to work now, and how he’ll never get the kids. She is the “classic” victim; everything was his fault. She takes no responsibility in her marriage falling apart. This woman is always gossiping about something or someone, and hardly has a smile on her face. The other woman I know went through the same situation, yet she is the complete opposite. She always has a smile on her face and always something nice to say. She regrets the mistakes that both her and her husband have made in the past and is working on “bettering herself”. She accepts responsibility for her marriage falling apart and is looking at the future as a new adventure for herself. Looking at both situations, where do you belong? We can all play the “victim” in life; everyone has gone through difficult times. We can blame others for our situations and our lives. But the reality is, we all have a choice. We have the choice to react to every situation either negatively or positively. We can choose to laugh or cry, get angry or get over it. No one can make you feel anything without your permission! So someone doesn’t make you angry; you choose to get angry. Just like, no one can make you happy. You must choose to be happy.

I’m often asked; “Isn’t a weight loss program expensive?. I always reply ;“This was my last chance to change my life, once the pounds started melting away ,there was no turning back for me..”.….for me it was cheaper to invest in this program than to end up taking medication the rest of my life, being un-fit, feeling sick all the time, missing work, becoming dependent on the health care system, not being able to enjoy life with my family to the fullest etc…..there is no price for happiness. It is honestly the best thing that I ever did for myself, I had tried every other diet without success…. I highly recommend the “Revolution Weight Loss Clinic”. The staff is awesome, you receive regular educational newsletters (learn about health from the inside/out), health seminars, support, daycare service etc. You can even invest in your own qualified physical trainer…everything that you need is there, you just have to make the first step. I wish to thank Jason and Jennifer Christoff that have always made me feel very special and comfortable at their club. They placed a lot of confidence in my success, giving me the opportunity to do a few radio commercials for their program as well as take part in their “Revolution Movie”. They were always there to boost my confidence along the way. Thanks to them, I found enough confidence to take my weight loss success a step further….I now give healthy eating cooking seminars , part 1 (cellulite reducing and weight maintenance recipes) and part 2 (snacks, main meals and desserts). I make homemade natural/organic goods and I am presently working on perfecting a few gluten-free items as well….all very exciting things happening and coming my way and I am so ready for it…

Yoga teaches us how to be real with ourselves and to look within ourselves. You can’t play the “victim” on the yoga mat, it is no one else’s fault that you can’t do downward dog. When we come to the mat, we really see ourselves; our strengths and our weaknesses. And yoga shows us how to move beyond and get stronger. We can change; we just must be willing to do so. Yoga teaches us that with consistency and compassion, we can transform our lives. Practicing yoga on a daily basis brings genuine happiness and love to your heart because you are taking care of yourself both physically, mentally and spiritually! So “choose to be that” person and spread some yogalove! Love and Blessings, Lisa Blanchard, Spirit Tree Yoga www.spirittreeyoga.net

If you want to change your life and learn how to prepare natural/organic recipes come to one of my seminars, you will not regret it. For more information call Sylvie at 613-931-3119 or email me at thehealthnut@cogeco.ca . Please visit my official website at www.thehealthnut.ca

*My next part 1 cooking seminar will be on Saturday March 10th from 1 to 4 pm. Spots fill up quickly, book yours as soon as possible….

COME AND SAY “HI” ON SUNDAY MARCH 4TH, AT THE “I AM WOMAN CONFERENCE/ TRADE SHOW”, it will be an awesome day to celebrate women…I will be demonstrating a few healthy recipes that you will be able to taste test. I will have samples of my homemade goods there for you to sample as well…maybe even a few gluten free surprises… In health….Sylvie Thibert

Rule No. 1 – There are no Rules. (Just really good advice!) Rule number one is more than just words - it should be your mantra. If you have ever taken any classes on any subject or watched a talk show on television, you know that each person who says they are an expert on a subject will gladly tell you that you should do it this way, or that way and that is the only way because – they truly believe that if it works for them, it will work for you. If you have taken a class on the same subject by two or more instructors you know that they will rarely agree on any of the more subjective topics and often do not agree on some of the basics. It’s all so confusing. Who is right and who is wrong? The truth is that they are all right, because it is a method that works for them. The problem arises when what works for them doesn’t work for you. So now what do you do. You take comfort from rule number one. There are no rules, just really good advice. How does this apply to you the Artist? There will be hundreds of Artists who will stick to a repertoire of do’s and don’ts to do with the application of their Art. They will insist that you must perform a variety of rituals in order for your work to improve or even measure up and you just can’t seem to get the method down. You become so frustrated that you may lose your confidence or even your drive to make your art.

Then there are another set who will insist that everything that the first group says is wrong and that they alone know the truth. Their way is the only way to go. The problem is that you can’t get yourself around that method either, now what. There may even be a third set that embrace some of the first group and some of the second group’s philosophy of how to Master the process. The problem isn’t that any of them are right or wrong it’s just that when we decide in absolutes around anything then the creative process starts to stagnate or sometimes even stop flowing. This may have happened to you. I remember one day my daughter came home from third grade all teary eyed and depressed because some well-meaning art teacher had told her that the sky had to be blue, and not purple (the colour she had decided to use). I had told her many times when we were painting together that when she painted, she could make things in her painting any colour that she wanted to, after all it was her painting. Now the visiting Art teacher was telling her that the sky must be blue, and not purple, or green or any other colour. I wiped away her tears and told her that we should be glad that we have the freedom in this world to take or leave this nice lady’s advice and paint the sky any colour we like. How many of you out there have had the unfortunate experience of wanting to paint the sky green and were told it should be blue.

ART SEEKERS by Sandra Taylor Hedges

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS

..........Shine On. I’ve always been the kind of person to always think the best in people and I’ve always trusted and believed that most people are good, unless proven otherwise. I try not to judge people nor their decisions because most of the time my hands are NOT clean, and I’m certainly in no position to be judging someone nor their choices. This past week, I’ve come to the realization that some people – even complete strangers – will “throw rock at things that shine.” What I mean is that, out of pure jealousy, spite or envy, some people will try to bring you down. They will do or say just something to make you second guess your judgment or decisions, which can turn your life upside down in a split second. (Yeah, it’s not fun and I really don’t wish this terrible feeling or situation upon anyone!). My mom has always told me “Vanessa, you can be anything you want to be, never give up and don’t let anyone stand in your way when you really want something and always strive to be the best that you can be. These words of wisdom have stuck with me since I can remember, and the people closest to me know that when I put my mind to something there’s nothing that can stand in my way and if you push me down with words or actions, well, you’ve just fueled my fire ever more.

People will always have something have an opinion whether it’s positive or negative and it’s important to trust your inner judgments and your gut feeling, it will always steer you in the right direction. It’s not secret that I’m a really open person but there are definitely times when even I have to be guarded and keep certain things to myself. It’s a harsh lesson, and one I’ve learned recently. Ladies, the point it, don’t let anyone try and turn your world upside down with cruel words or actions; I know that you are all fabulous and always remember that no one nor women is not perfect. We all have faults but there is difference between having a moment of weakness and just simply being mean. The weak and jealous type will always try and bring you down, because you’re FABULOUS where it counts the most... inside. Keeping shining YOUR light and if people throw rocks, don’t dodge them, acknowledge them and move on, life is just to short to waist your energy and time on people who try and bring you down. Stay fabulous, V.

If we start to look at the overall process and take a little of this and a bit of that, we will start to discover the way that works best for us. Until we look at all the knowledge that is presented to us as simply advice for the taking we will never unlock our true potential. Allow yourself to look at workshops and painting classes as a wonderful buffet of ideas and challenges. Take a little from this method and some of this idea mash it all up in your right brain and see what your Universal translator of creativity comes up with. “ About The House”

Dear Joe, I have a fiberglass shower stall in my basement bathroom. My house isn’t all that old but the drywall around the shower is mouldy and crumbling. Why is this happening, what do I need to do to fix it and how can I prevent this from happening again? We have pretty well stopped using this shower so it doesn’t get any worse. But when we have guests we would like to have a bathroom for them to use that I am not so ashamed of. Thank you for your advice, love your column.

Dear anonymous, You are not alone in your battle against mouldy bathroom drywall. Especially around tubs and showers. The root of the problem is this: Contractors who don’t care enough to do things right the first time. It comes down to dollars and sense. If a contractor can save a buck and it lasts long enough that the owner can’t come back with a warranty claim then he’s done his job. Problem is after a two or three years things start to fall apart and the homeowner is left to foot the bill for repairs or live in a house that’s falling apart. This shouldn’t have to happen. But I digress; The reason this is happening is water or moisture has broken the protective layer of paint, which in an installation like this is all that separates the drywall from the water. Once the moisture is in it is a matter of days before the drywall is soaking it up like a sponge and it loses all integrity, this moist environment is the perfect breeding ground for mould which, as it grows, further deteriorates the crumbling mess. The only remedy is replacement. We must cut out all the offending material, like a cancer, so it cannot continue to deteriorate, and we have something sound to build upon. The area behind will have to be allowed to dry if it is significantly damp or else mould will continue to flourish. Once we have the area clean and dry, we can replace the drywall and fix the wall. But we cannot replace it with just regular drywall. We have to install something that will be impervious to water in the future so that it doesn’t happen again, perhaps the way it should have been done in the first place. At very least we need to install a moisture resistant drywall, which incidentally should be installed everywhere in the bathroom, though it almost never is in new construction .that’s right, because of cost. That being said we cannot leave drywall, even moisture resistant drywall, exposed to water in the bathroom with only a layer of paint to protect it. It will need an impervious layer installed over it, so whether that’s panelling or waterproofing membrane over which to tile, the drywall will never be in contact with water again. And that’s the only way you will prevent this from recurring. Hopefully your condition hasn’t advanced too far and it is as simply as replacing some sheetrock . While you’re doing it make sure you do the entire are surrounding the shower: all around the top up to the ceiling and down the walls along both sides of the front. This way you will be sure you have a water tight installation that you will not need to revisit in a couple years. St. Lawrence Secondary School Students Host Art Showcase at Cornwall Public Library Students from the grades 10-11 art classes at St. Lawrence Secondary School (SLSS) have been showcasing their talents by hosting a public art display at the Cornwall Public Library. From January 25 – February 29, student art from last semester is being showcased at the entrance of the library. Art teacher Gisele Paquette said she wanted to find an additional venue to display student work. This is the first year that SLSS student art has been showcased at the library, and Paquette looks forward to more opportunities in the future.

“Now we can use the area on a more regular basis,” she said. Art displayed includes transformation portraits, glasswork, paintings, and drawings, as well as an “out-of-the-box” transformation project, where students were given the challenge to morph a simple box into something else. “We focused a lot on art history,” Paquette said. Grade 11 student Melissa McHarg said she’s actually been recognized on the street for her artwork at the library. “I did get stopped on the street,” she said. “Someone said they liked my art.” The person recognized McHarg because of a digital portrait that was displayed. “Most of my art involves throwing a canvas on the floor, and then throwing paint at it,” she said. “If people like my art, that’s pretty cool.” Grade 11 student Yun Joung said she’s never had a chance to showcase her art in such a large public space before. “It’s a great opportunity for me,” she said. “Every piece I have has a theme. I hope people who see our art understand the theme that we were trying to portray.”

SEEKERS FINDS or FLOPS

by Julia Lucio Carrots, potatoes, apples, eggs -- whatever needs peeling, I despise. Yes, I'm one of these people who would stoop so low as to serving my family synthetic boxed mashed potatoes just to save myself the trouble of peeling. So when Safe TV Shop promised me to never have to peel an egg again, I was in. However, the Eggies are not at all what they are cracked up to be.

excessively difficult and requires a lot of scrubbing. Furthermore, the egg does not cook evenly, gets a funny rubbery texture and a plastic taste that really isn't enjoyable. All in all, not worth the money in our opinion. Great idea, but seriously needs to be reworked. If you want to give them a try, Eggies are available for $8.97 at Giant Tiger. Don't forget to let us know what YOU think! email us at: info@thelocalseeker.com

Although it's a novel concept, it's not as simple as the ad, or the box, makes it look. Each Eggie comes in four parts that you have to put together. That alone takes more time than peeling an egg would! Once assembled, you have to oil the Eggie, (no, you can't use cooking spray!) then crack your egg in it and boil it in water as you would do a regular egg. Simple, right? Wrong. What they do not tell you is that the threads on the plastic parts do not fit right making the top and bottom parts hard to screw together. When cooking, the cups do not float in a leveled position, so your nicely shaped egg, with the yolk in the middle, perfect to make your devilled eggs, is not so nicely shaped anymore. Some, if not most, of your egg white will seep through and leak into the boiling water, leaving you with a useless clump of a yolk. Cleaning is

Warriors new Goalie Alexandre Vincent saves the day ... Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk Akwesasne - February 18, 2012 -The Akwesasne Warriors came back from a 3-1 deficit against Brooklyn going into the third period and won the game 4-3. The former New Jersey Devil and current FHL league leading scorer Pierre Dagenais had an assist on each of the Warriors first two goals. Dagenais scored the tying goal at 11:50 of the third period. Jean Rene Forget gave the Warriors the lead and scored what would turn out to be the game winner with 4:03 left in regulation. The 225 people in attendance were ecstatic to watch this exciting come-back win! Alexandre Vincent played his first ever game as a Warrior and got the win making a whopping 47 saves. Vincent, who was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 4th round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, has experience playing in the QMJHL and the CHL. Brooklyn out-shot Akwesasne 50 to 43, and the Warriors defense seemed to be standing around the entire game. Despite that, Vincent kept the Warriors in the game, and he made the comeback possible. In other hockey action last Friday, The Jr. A Cornwall Colts beat Kemptville 10-1 and Tylor Spink scored the hat trick including a pair of power-play goals, and he also had an assist. Roman Ammirato also had a pair of power play goals and an assist. Lukas Hafner stopped 14 of 15 shots for the win. Kemptville's only goal was by Kurt Gowdy on the power play.

Faiths Find Common Cause in Environmental Concerns So, what do the Messiah, the Day of Judgment and the environment have in common? Well, it seems that a Jewish contemporary of Jesus advised: “If you are planting a tree and you hear that Messiah has come, finish planting the tree, then go and inquire.” Then, some 600 years later, Muhammad reportedly said: “If the Day of Judgment erupts while you are planting a new tree, go ahead and plant it.” These were just two of the “pearls” of wisdom shared by participants at the Greening Sacred Spaces event held in the beautiful library space at Cornwall’s Central Public School last Sunday. Organized by Transition Cornwall+, the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership and the national Greening Sacred Spaces initiative, the event attracted close to 50 people to explore the question: What does it mean to care for the earth within the context of our spiritual beliefs.” This discussion was facilitated by Kathryn Guindon, Greening Sacred Space’s program officer for Eastern Ontario. She guided participants through four themes in either plenary session or small group workshops:

· Is climate change a moral issue? · Is there a part of the natural world that you feel strongly connected to? · How does your concern for nature interact with your faith?” · How 'green' is your faith community right now?” Guindon said that she was very impressed by the turnout in Cornwall, which was larger than what she usually receives in Ottawa. John Towndrow, one of the event organizers, said he found the cooperation and collaboration between the three organizing groups “very rich” and was struck by the age and religious diversity of those attending (Hindu, Christian, Muslim and Bahá’í), particularly many Muslim youth and children. He has subsequently learned that one of his friends who could not attend Sunday’s event has set up a meeting with her pastor ”to talk about establishing a Green Team” at her church, which was precisely one of the event’s objectives. Travelling to far away places may be exciting, but for some it can seem unattainable. With the economy in a downturn and the government poised to cut tens of thousands of jobs, finding the money to travel is harder than ever. But, with a few simple tips, you can be on your way. 1. Shift Your Priorities In order to save for your next vacation, you need to penny pinch and follow a budget. You might be thinking, “How do I save money? I am already stretched to the limit with my paycheque.” Well, you can bring a bagged lunch to work, make your own coffee from home, and take out a DVD from the library for free instead of renting one or going to the cinema. Just by making these changes, you can save over $50 a week. Think of it this way: the savings from bringing your own lunch and coffee to work each day for a year would equal two return flights to Europe with spending money. It is all a matter of priorities. 2. Go With the Deals People ask me all the time, “Where are you planning to take your next vacation?” Without fail, my response is, “Wherever the deals are.” I want to see the world, one country at a time. My philosophy is to be open to multiple destinations, and be flexible as to when to go. Good times to find the cheapest flights are usually the last weekend in January, and the first few weeks after Labour Day. But, be forewarned - sales can happen any time, so be prepared and plan ahead.

3. Research on the Cheap (i.e., Use Your Library) If you do it right, you can plan your trip without spending a lot. Many people rush out to a book store like Chapters to pick up some travel books. But don’t be foolish. Travel books are pricey and it all adds up, taking a bite out of your savings. The more you spend on books, the less money you have for travel, and the longer you have to wait to go. In fact, researching your trip can even be a little staycation if you visit the libraries in your area. Your local library has areas dedicated to travel books, magazines, and even DVDs on many destinations. The United Counties of SD&G (www.sdglibrary.ca) has 18 branches spread out in the counties, and Cornwall (www.library.cornwall.on.ca) has an amazing facility on Second Street. If you don’t have a library card, you can sign up for one free of charge, depending on where you live. All of the libraries have public computers with high speed internet. You can use the computers for initial research, and when you have narrowed the field down, you can take out resources on your chosen destinations. The library clerks are an incredible resource on their own, and if they don’t have what you are looking for, they can order it from another library or put in a request for purchase. Libraries offer lots of programs, so your kids will often be occupied while you do your research. March break in particular is a great time to head to your local library. So, sign up for a card and not only will you save by not purchasing expensive travel books, but you can also take out newly released DVDs, magazines, and use the internet for free. Savings add up and you will be travelling to your chosen destination in no time. 4. Harness the Internet Besides the library, I like to search for trip information and travel deals on the internet. I check these websites regularly for good deals: www.flightcentre.ca www.airtransat.ca www.klm.com and www.tripcentral.ca Then, I will Google the destinations online. If you have selected a destination, try looking at the official website of that county’s main airport for a wealth of information. You can also look at their airlines, as sometimes it is cheaper to fly to other countries on their planes than on our Canadian airlines. These are just a few of the websites I use. There are tons of travel sites out there, but you should be cautious if the deal seems too good to be true. Sometimes, it’s worth it to get travel insurance. But, doing your research, partaking in some local freebies, and having a mini-break at your local library, all for free is...priceless. And you will be on your way to a great vacation sooner than you think. Bio: Jeannie Gagnon is a former National Parks Warden who traded in her gun for a pen and plane ticket. WHEN YOU’ VE GOT TO GO... by Jeannie Gagnon

SEEKERS TRAVEL SECTION Travelling with Carson to Melbourne, Australia Melbourne in August is cool. You must remember that this is the winter season down under. You make sure you bring a good warm sweater and gloves, scarf, and windbreaker or some such coat to ward off the damp cold climate. Coming from this country you will notice the change in the weather. Its good to have some warm night wear like flannel PJ’s for the bedrooms can be cold. There’s no heat in the rooms and they are not insulated, and most windows have only single pane glass. The temperature in the evening can drop to a chilly 37 degrees or 2 or 1 C. You can get an electric heater for your room, and it does throw off some heat, but it isn’t central heating.

Melbourne was made for tourists. It’s laid out in squares, and so is very easy to wander around even though there is a river that cuts by the downtown part of the city. I believe it is the Yarra river that meanders by the city. This is a place to relax and play on its broad grassy banks. Although in the winter months you might only walk along its banks or relax on the benches. Melbourne is a centre for the arts, culture, cuisine, rich in galleries, theatres and great restaurants and cafes. If you’re into sports you will not be disappointed. It has fine facilities in which to enjoy them. Federation Square is Melbourne’s meeting place across from the Flinders street train station, which is the hub of the local train service coming in to the city. The clocks above the entrance from the street show departure times for trains on different lines. At the square you can explore Australia’s artistic and cultural history by visiting three unique galleries and museums. The Ian Potter Centre is dedicated to Australian art. You can explore the world of film, television and digital culture at ACMI--- short for Australian centre for the moving image.

There where many exhibitions such as the ABBAWORLD, plus the No Vacancy Gallery. The square also offers you a range of cafes, restaurants and bars, and you can walk through the Atrium with its specialty shopping, high art and pop culture. This is also where the Visitors Centre is located and your first stop when you come to town. At the centre you can have a walking tour with your own guide to show you the sights in the city. This is a must, and gives you understanding of when, where, why and how to see and do and play in the city of Melbourne. There is so much to do and see in Melbourne. If you like to shop, the arcades are the place to be, for the restored interiors housing boutiques in which the variety and quality of merchandise is unequalled. The market on Saturday is fascinating. You can walk about for hours looking at stalls and making purchases from various items. When you are tired go to the free bus stop. You look for the circle with a red slash and written on it – “tourist shuttle”. This bus travels around the city stopping at various interesting places. You can visit the Docklands, where you can watch sports, shop and enjoy a stop at one of the cafes or restaurants. If you want a more restful place, ride the bus to the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is still beautiful at this time of year. Remember it is still winter in Australia. You can go to Chinatown and taste a smorgasboard of Asian cuisines. The evening you can go to the theatre, such as Her Majesty’s Princess and Comedy Theatres. They are a treat to see for the stunning architecture and colour when you enter. Do stop at Lygon St. for a taste of the Italian cuisine in small cafes. There are so many places to see. The last one, which I liked, was South bank and Yarra River stop. Here you had the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as the glitz and glamour of Crown Entertainment Complex where you can dance at a nightclub, catch a movie, and eat at a waterside restaurant. Southgate is a popular shopping and restaurant complex on the banks of the Yarra River. Melbourne is the birthplace of Aussie Rules Football and the “race that stops a nation”, the Melbourne Cup. On the lighter side, Melbourne has become Australia’s comedy capital, with an annual festival that draws comedians from around the world and if that is not enough, this city is noted for its parks, and gardens. This is a city, if you are going to Australia, is a “ MUST SEE” if you have to choose one. Late spring, summer and early fall are the choice seasons to visit this city, and if I go again those are the times I will pick. So if you have in mind to go somewhere new –Melbourne, Australia ----is the place for you.
