about CORNWALL PEOPLE for CORNWALL PEOPLE by CORNWALL PEOPLE
By Artist Tracy-Lynn Chisholm Some may think I’m the Grinch who stole New Year’s resolution but that’s a-okay by me. After years of disappointments and beating myself up (over never ending, unrealistic, over ambitious and unfulfilled resolutions gone bad) I decided that my resolve is to forge a new way to kick start the new year. It’s time to forgo this silly new year’s notion and make way (which really means making time) for uplifting no-no’s instead!
Peter s
It’s really quite simple. The no-no resolution is about letting go of what’s unimportant and taking better care of what’s already there. It’s about fighting the temptation to follow the crowd and cram our new year full of unfulfilling stuff. For god’s sake, there’s enough stuff going on in our daily routines to fill up two more lifetimes, and the last thing we need is another ‘to do’ list. So here’s something different to chew on, how about a ‘things not to do’ list! ‘Not to do’s’ release us from the busy-as-a-bee syndrome and gives us all a little more time to cherish what’s already standing in front of us. Kid’s instinctively no-no it! Watch these wise little farts in action, they don’t make silly lists of resolutions because they take one thing, one task, one step at a time. Have you ever met a seven year old on New Year’s eve who said ‘I’ve got this amazing checklist, you gotta see it, it’s about a page long with all these nifty things that I’m gonna cram in to the new year, yup, when I grab hold of these big goals I’ll be the golden child alright, I’ll put a big fat checkmark beside each one, and when I get to that last goal...phew...that’s when I’ll be perfect, that’s when I’ll achieve true happiness...boy oh boy, what a year this is gonna be!’. Kinda ridiculous, isn’t it? So why do we, as adults, seem to repeat this self destructive act on the cusp of each and every new year? We seem to overdo our ‘to do’s’ all the time. It makes me wonder if we’re programmed to reach for unrealistic goals or if we’re simply trying to keep up with what we think is expected of us. I mean, if Oprah does it shouldn’t we? (we still love you Oprah). It’s always our quest to become something bigger, someone better, somewhat richer, somehow smarter, ....but really, when we really, really think about it, all we want is one thing: happiness. Now there’s a gazillion ways to get our fix, and everyone strives for happiness in a different way, yet we often complicate it to the point that we don’t even see the beauty of the simple things that make us most happy everyday. It’s rarely the big things and most often the most simple things - once again, refer to a kid and they’ll give you the skinny on that one. Here’s the big question to get your no-no’s kick started: Who and what are your happy makers? Now that’s a wonderful list to think about! It’s things like your kids reaching for goodnight kisses, cars starting like a charm in sub-zero weather, your dog doing the happy dance when you get home (wouldn’t it be wonderful if your partner did that too! ;)...the list goes on as the day is long. The no-no is really about saying yes-yes to your happy makers and giving them your full and undivided attention. I promise, if you give these things more of your time and more of your all important attention sheer happiness will blissfully ensue for all of you. Buddha said it best: ‘it is better to travel well than to arrive’....so travel well my friends, never you mind about arriving at the end of those big lofty goals, you’ll get there eventually (or not ;) either way it’s all good as long as you take care of what and who you love along the way. Be brave and make your way, Tracy-Lynn P.S. in case you’re wondering, one of my no-no’s is ‘Talk Less - See More’

Did City Council hold Secret Meetings? The question has arisen, did our City Council hold secret meetings? According to Mayor Bob Kilger, it was an oversight, and the media was suppose to get notification about an incamera meeting (presumably about embarrassing HR issues). Perception is nine-tenths of the truth, however it's the other one-tenth, reality, which is the most important part of that equation. Some may wonder, what are the laws concerning incamera meetings? In June of 2007 the Supreme Court of Canada issued a stern warning to municipal councils across the country against holding meetings in secret. There are specific laws in Ontario that say council meetings must take place in public, but the statue identifies seven categories in which closed meetings can be permitted including employee relations and litigation. All deliberations outside these seven areas must be held in public. Open meetings are important for transparency and accountability. Even if an entire meeting is in-camera, a notice of the meeting must be made public. The over-sight by the City is muddying the waters and creating the perception of a scandal. Could City Council and City Administration have dealt with this better? I suspect the answers is yes.
The little train that couldn't! First Greyhound/Voyager buses don't bother coming inside our City anymore, and now VIA trains want to cut some services to Cornwall too. This is bad for economic development, this is bad for tourism, and this is bad for Cornwall residents who rely on these services. It feels like Cornwall is becoming more and more isolated. Both Bob Kilger and the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce have wrote press releases about this issue, strongly urging VIA to continue frequent services that benefit our City and economic development. These train service cuts will put Cornwall at a serious disadvantage. I took a VIA train to Toronto over the Christmas holidays to visit family there Toronto, and I really like taking the train. I think it's unfortunate that Cornwall will be getting reduced services. Homelessness in the Winter! Being homeless and living on the streets is difficult and dangerous enough. But when winter is added to the equation, with temperatures dropping to life-threatening lows, the result is pure misery. I asked the question on Facebook, does Cornwall have any emergency shelters for the homeless on these frigid winter nights? According to Carilyne Hébert, “anyone that is Homeless can go into the Cornwall Community Hospital, check into Triage and once done and deemed "homeless" can be place at a few different emergency locations.” At least the homeless have that option, but I still strongly believe the City needs a permanent homeless shelter. Fuddle Duddle! Environment Minister Peter Kent belittled NDP critic Megan Leslie for not attending the Durban conference on climate change.

This infuriated Liberal MP Justin Trudeau, after all it was the Harper government that decided not to accredit any opposition members, making it impossible for them to attend. Trudeau leapt to his feet, and shouted out: “You piece of sh–” and stared down the Conservative benches. What's worst a politician who swears or a politician who lies? I think the media should focus more attention on the latter. My name is Jason Setnyk, and these are my coffee grinds. New Year, New Attitude and New Goals Recently I saw glimpses of the life I want, the changes I hope to make and the future I want to cultivate. It is going to take time, but I have set in motion the steps I need to take to make it happen. External factors can hinder progress and influence behaviours, but with persistence, drive, hard work and a positive attitude; it can happen. First step is to seriously look at everything. Take inventory of things, review time consumers and then create a list of what needs to change, reflect on desired outcome, voice it to close friends and family for their support and encouragement and then take action.
So 10 days into the new year, I have kept my personal challenges resolution. I have set a schedule and have committed to doing at least one hour of work at home every day. The results after only one week; 25 hours dedicated to home projects, several rooms starting to look the way I envision, less clutter, better organization, several boxes and bags packed for donation, and the encouragement needed to keep going. These marathon ‘trying to get everything done on the weekend’ days are over. I’m left feeling either stressed, or guilty over what wasn’t completed. It doesn’t matter what time the home projects are done, but at least one hour a day has to be spent on something home related, for both me and Brad. Not only do we have to do more, but we also have to maintain what we have done, so things have to be organized and kept up. To help keep me focused and energized, I have started practicing yoga again. I had my first “Hot Yoga” class, last Saturday at Spirit Tree Yoga Studio in Cornwall on Eleventh Street, and I intend to return again this week. It was invigorating and soothing workout. The room was filled with eager ladies. Hot Yoga was so popular, Lisa added a second class on Saturdays. This heat intensified yoga class is based on *Bikram Yoga’s twenty-six posture exercises. The session will systematically move fresh, oxygenated blood to one hundred percent of your body, to each organ and fiber, restoring all systems to healthy working order, just as Nature intended. The Hot Yoga, twenty-six asana series is designed to scientifically warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons, in the order in

which they should be stretched. For more info on all the different yoga classes and types available visit * http://www.spirittreeyoga.net/. I also returned to Zumba after a 6 month absence. Christal Huizinga and the Zumba ladies and men, make it a great experience. Her new larger location at Nativity Hall (Agora) means she can get the party started and really ring in the new year with ample room to move and embrace the ”shake your way into a new you”, motto. Approximately 300 people of all ages attended and participated in the ‘Hall Warming’ evening. The energy in the room was outstanding. I was a little worried that my long absence would affect things, but I’m happy to say that although I don’t know the routines yet, I was able to get back into it with ease. Newcomers are always welcome and it is a great way to exercise and have fun. I plan on attending twice a week; schedule permitting. *Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International musicdance themes creating a dynamic, exciting ,effective fitness system. The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. It targets areas such as glutes, legs, arms, abdominals and the most important muscle in the body, the heart. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps. For more info *http://www.zumbacornwall.ca/ Healthy eating is also on the menu both at home and at work. By not skipping meals, and eating sensible healthy food and drinking more water; we feel better. Even junk food doesn’t taste as good to us anymore. Sure we have the occasional treat, but by taking time, planning meals and working together, we will not only save money but feel better too. Through social media and general conversation; I notice that a lot of people are also working on personal goals. Stick with it, no matter what. Sure it can be discouraging and frustrating, especially during the early stages; but with time, you’ll start to see the difference. Whatever your goals may be; I wish you the best of luck. So what does 2012 hold? Well that is an unknown, but for me I am starting with a positive attitude, a fresh perspective, determination, strong-willed goals, a strong support system and a lot of belief with a big dose of hope! Leisure travel -- this scribble was on the
The Honky Tonk Man returning to Cornwall for live wrestling action
top pile of papers that Dawn set down on the middle shelf. Yes, at this time of year or just after the holidays, some people tend to think of taking trips. One such trip, if you like trains, is the trip across Canada. When I went it was called the --Silver and Blue . This trip takes four days and four nights. In the winter or summer the scenery is breathtaking, and the vastness of our country will amaze you. The train used to run from Montreal to Vancouver, but now it runs from Toronto to Vancouver. The good thing about this trip is that taking the service from Cornwall, you can still catch the train for the West in Toronto that evening. This service will look after your bags at the station while you wander around Toronto and shop or just go see touristy stuff.
If you take the latest train from Cornwall, you have about five hours to kill, before you board the train for the west. This gives you plenty of time to browse in the stores, and have a leisurely dinner in one of the many restaurants in the city, or just go visit friends. When you board the train in the evening, your berth, roomette or drawingroom has been made ready, so that you can retire as soon as you board. Many passengers wait until the train is moving before they retire as they want to explore the train, and also there is coffee and tea, sweet rolls and muffins for you in the lounge /observation car at the back of the train. Now off you go through Toronto and head North then North West to Winnipeg, Manitoba. You snooze all night and wake to an endless forest of trees, lakes, and rocks. You wonder where you are, only to learn that you are still in Ontario. Yes, Northern Ontario. You have still a whole day before you leave this province, and enter the gateway to the west. Once awake and dressed, off to the dining room you go for a very delicious breakfast. Usually there are two sittings in the dining car for each meal and sometimes three when the train is full. It is at this first breakfast that you will receive your ticket for your next two meal times. You have several choices, from a very large breakfast to a tiny one. When I’m on long trips like this one, I tend to enjoy the larger meals as they are
Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk On Saturday January 21st 2012 The Honky Tonk Man returns to Cornwall after three years to battle against Tatanka. This is the main event of the Canadian Grand Prix W r e s t l i n g "SHOWDOWN IN THE BORDERTOWN II - 10th Anniversary Special". The event takes plays at Murphy's Inn in Cornwall Ontario. The Honky Tonk Man (aka Roy Wayne Farris) pictured above is the self proclaimed greatest WWE Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion of all time defeating Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat in 1987. so delicious and I love food. Looking out the window of the dining car you often see the winter animals roaming near the tracks. This may be fox, deer, moose, rabbit, wolf, mountain goat and mountain sheep, and several of our fine feathered friends from the bird kingdom. These are the species that you will see in the winter months. Now you can return to your room or berth, or go to the lounge and observation deck. Here you can read the various papers, such as Montreal, Toronto, and as you continue west, you will have the paper from the various Cities you pass by, or you can sit up in the observation deck and see the scenery and maybe catch some of the wild life. While in this car, you can help yourself to tea and coffee, and sweet rolls and fruit that is always there for your pleasure. Then if you like to have an alcoholic drink, the bar is underneath the observation deck, and someone will serve you. Also in this car is an area where you can play board games or cards. When traveling across our country, there is always times when the staff will explain over the speakers for all to hear some interesting aspect about our country. Such as how the early settlers settled in a certain area, how they were able to survive our cold winters, and how the train was built and some stories of how this country was opened up. The terrain of each province, and the way towns and cities were designed, are each unique to their area. Although the Prairie Provinces are considered flat, and it is true you can see forever, there are rolling hills, and clumps of trees, and the land is dotted with many homesteads, and the golden wheat fields covered in snow in the winter, and in summer a beauty to behold. Also in winter a stark beauty of whiteness on the land, that goes on and on, as far as the eye can see. Even if it is only once in a life time, this trip is worth every cent. The wonder of the train, and the experience of travel across our beautiful country, stopping at the various stations even if only for a few minutes, gives you the traveler a much better understanding of how vast is our land, and the determination of a people to survive in harsh conditions to live in freedom. We, who live in cities, tend to forget that it was the settlers who opened up this country and lived off the land, and broke ground for the development of our towns, and cities, were the early pioneers of our country. We are reminded of this in our area by Upper Canada Village. The train was instrumental in joining the east and the west of our country. The passenger of the train can begin to have a deeper understanding of the development of our country as the train chugs past the various landscapes to its destination, the west coast. The train slides into the Station. The morning is warm, sunny and clear, you have finished breakfast, your bags are packed, and you’re ready to disembark. This journey is over, and yet you have just begun another to Vancouver Island and the city of Victoria.

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS "TeenZ" the movie ...
On Saturday, January 7th 2012, Seeker Chick Mai-Liis was invited to a private screening of the movie TeenZ which has been a project that 3 Angels Power Film Production INC has worked on with a group of local people, some with acting experience and some without - all of who gained a lot from this filming experience, including the importance of “Old Fashioned Values”. I interviewed Gladys Karam, one of the producers, asking her a few important questions regarding the production. What is your movie about? "TeenZ" is about the story of a teenager who turns her birthday party into a last minute wedding with the help of her friends while her parents are away visiting the grandparents. Nowadays, with TeenZ nothing like it seems, and nothing like it means. It is a reality fiction, family movie with the touch of comedy that brings generations closer in a digital world filled with technology, and no time to spare or even share. The story behind "TeenZ" simply unfolds gradually over the time line of a long weekend, and teaches the viewer many important lessons indirectly. Why did you do this movie? To simply interact with the community of Cornwall. Our sincere intention was to offer all ages a chance, and give an opportunity to those who are talented enough and might have the potential to pursue a career in the TV/Film industry. Who made this movie, who is in the movie? "TeenZ" is written, filmed, directed, edited, and produced by 3Angels Power Film Production INC (owned by 3 sisters, I, Gladys Karam, and my two younger sisters Jeanne D'arc Karam, and Mona Lisa Karam). - pictured to the right. Volunteer photography by our mother Mona Karam. Imagine Locals were turned into superstars instantly.... With the help of our direction, and on set prompters our characters were portrayed by locals, most of them had no previous experience in acting. Other talents were given an equal chance to participate in "TeenZ", talents such as; indy wrestlers, upcoming musicians/bands, and singers to shine forever in our reality fic family movie. Where can people see this movie or buy this movie? "TeenZ" is out straight on DVD. Trailer is found on youtube, and Facebook. People can place orders by email: threeangelspower@yahoo.com, Buy it online at our web store: http://www.freewebs.com/3angelspowerfilmproductioninc/apps/webstore/ On location at Friktion Night Club, 113 1/2 Pitt Street, or simply by calling 3Angels 613 930 9867 NB. Financially Speaking with Brian Seguin
When Choosing a Financial Advisor, Ask the Right Questions How do you choose a financial advisor? Like most people, you probably are busy with your work and family, and may not have the time or expertise needed to thoroughly understand the investment world. So how do you choose the right financial advisor? You can start by asking the right questions. Here are a few to consider: • Have you worked with people in my situation? As an investor, you have your own special set of characteristics: level of assets, stage of life, long-term goals, etc. Before you sign up to work with a financial advisor, you need to make sure he or she is comfortable working with someone like you.
Christmas Kettle Campaign Surpasses Goal
• What are your credentials? Inquire about a prospective advisor's qualifications. Make sure anyone you might work with has all the necessary securities licenses. • Are you or the firm you represent affiliated with regulatory organizations? Ask whether the advisor or the firm he or she represents is regulated. For example, any firm or advisor who is a member of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) would need to comply with rules that protect client assets if a firm becomes insolvent. • What is your investment philosophy? Just like investors, financial advisors have different investment philosophies. Some might be naturally more aggressive, while others are more conservative. But the ideal advisor can provide you with guidance based on your risk tolerance and investment preferences. • How will you communicate with me? Make sure your financial advisor will communicate regularly with you. Find out when you'll receive statements and how often you'll meet in person to review your portfolio. Will your financial advisor call with suggestions and recommendations? Are you free to contact him or her at any time? Remember, you're entrusting this person with your financial future – so you have a right to always expect open, honest and frequent communications.
• What sort of resources can you draw upon? Find out if a prospective investment professional has access to quality research and technical expertise in key areas, such as investments, insurance and estate planning. In some cases, a financial advisor may be able to bring in added expertise through a relationship with another professional, such as a lawyer or accountant. • How are you paid? Investment professionals can be paid through fees, commissions, percentage of assets under management or even a combination of these. You need to know, right from the start, how your financial advisor is being compensated. • Can you provide me with references? A lot of people are too shy to ask for references. However, a reputable financial advisor will be happy to give you some names of people you can call. Of course, you shouldn't expect a financial professional to provide you with the specifics of other clients' financial transactions. But you should be free to ask about a financial advisor's style, responsiveness, etc. Your association with a financial advisor is one of the most important business relationships you'll ever have. Making the right choice today can pay off into the future. Edward Jones, Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

The spirit of giving is alive and well in Cornwall. On behalf of The Salvation Army I would like to express thanks and gratefulness to the many residents and businesses of Cornwall and the SD&G area for the generosity shown during this year’s Kettle Campaign. We surpassed the $75,000 goal and that will help us meet the increased demand for our services and provide the funds needed to address the dehumanizing blight of poverty throughout 2012. We owe the success of this year's campaign to everyone who donated to the Kettles either in person, on line or by direct mail. The Joy of Being Brilliant Generally we look at the challenges with being a Creative Soul but all the negative stuff aside we should take time to revel in the sheer joy of being in the top percentile of those who are considered brilliant. Brilliant! Not me, I hear all your collective thoughts at the idea that you may be just that. So why is this so hard to accept? I know that from the time we were children we were taught not to be to self-absorbed. We were taught that humility was the way to go; pride comes before a fall and all the other cliché phrases to keep us humble. It is a strange world that tells us it is bad to acknowledge your abilities but fine to talk about your problems and short comings. So starting today I want you to add to your list of things that you are grateful for one more critical item. Your Brilliance! Thank your Mother, Father, Aunt Mabel or whatever higher power you believe in and say it, I am Brilliant.
How do I know you are brilliant? If you create anything and feel the calling of the muses, you are Brilliant. What is more important is that you know you are brilliant. Once you do you will start to shine brighter and brighter and your creative self will become boundless. If you need more than that as an example just do the following: Think about a time when you created something, a song, a poem, you painted effortlessly, danced with wings on your feet or wrote passages that flowed so easily you were convinced you were channeling Hemmingway. How did you feel? Excited, light, joyful, exhausted and happy, definitely happy; you were alive with every nerve tingling. This is brilliance. We all have experienced it and have the power to feel it daily, but often we don’t, why? I think that all this humility training as children that sabotages our brilliance, so starting today; I give you all permission to accept your brilliance and to start every day saying “I am a brilliant, creative, artistic soul, thank you (insert name) I shall not waist it!” Once you accept that this is the truth about you amazing things will happen. You will find that the brilliant ideas will flow and brilliant ideas are a little like rabbits once you have a couple of them the next thing you know you have a million of them. Will you have down days? Sure, we all do but getting back on track will be much easier if you are accepting of how great you really are. Will some of your ideas or creative expressions be not so brilliant? Yes, of course. The important thing is to not mistake arrogance with knowing and appreciating your creative brilliance. Arrogant people never accept that they make mistakes or are not perfect. We know we make mistakes but when we don’t – Get out the sun glasses and watch out!! OFF THE MAT with Lisa Blanchard
ART SEEKERS by Sandra Taylor Hedges
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS I am so happy and excited to be able to share with you the wisdom and benefits of Yoga. This column will focus on lessons learned during a Yoga class and how we can take them “off the mat” and into our everyday lives. Before we begin, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lisa Blanchard and I was born and raised in Cornwall. I am a typical Cornwallite in that I was raised in both our beautiful languages of French and English. I attended Ecole La Citadelle and thoroughly enjoyed my youth in Cornwall. I did, however, have a Gypsy Spiri, in that I wanted to explore what this world and country had to offer. So I left Cornwall at the age of 18 to go to the University of Ottawa. After spending time in Ottawa, I moved to Vancouver, then to Calgary and then finally to Dallas, Texas. In my travels, I met wonderful people and learned so much. What I realized is that we have a lot more in common than we have differences. And, that all of us just want to be happy and make our children happy. I decided to return to Cornwall after being away for more than 20 years because my mother is ill, and I missed my family, friends and this wonderful part of the country. Now that I am back in Cornwall, I am truly amazed how this city has changed and grown. I am excited that we have more arts and cultural events, great restaurants and entertainment, and two great athletic facilities; the Aquatic Centre and the Benson Centre. Cornwall is truly a great city to live in and raise our children!
I am proud to offer another great facility, Spirit Tree Yoga Studio. We are located at 117 Eleventh St. W (entrance on side of building, 2nd door). We offer all kinds of different Yoga classes, including Hot Yoga, Kids Yoga, Baby Yoga, Senior Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Gentle Yoga. Not only will we be offering Yoga classes, we will also be featuring workshops and events that support a Yoga lifestyle; workshops on essential oils, healthy foods, couples massage, baby massage, gardening, and a whole bunch more. Spirit Tree Yoga is a place of community where like-minded people can meet and grow to support our community in a healthy way! I hope you will come join us! Now for our “Off The Mat” wisdom: Yoga literally means “Union”. Yoga unites body, mind and spirit. It is a holistic practice/technology for life. During yoga postures that focus on strengthening and balancing the body, we breathe in and out continuously, even during the difficult poses. We learn to breathe through difficulty knowing that the pose will soon come to an end. To bring this tidbit of wisdom into everyday life, breath through the good times and breath through the bad times, knowing that it too will soon end. Love and Blessings, Lisa Blanchard, Spirit Tree Yoga www.spirittreeyoga.net

roadSIGNS by Betty Healey
SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS
Creative Destruction I received an e-mail just the other day from a former coaching client where she shared that she was engaged in creative destruction. This conjured up all sorts of images for me as I imagined what creative destruction might actually mean. And there was a part of me that said, YES, I get it! I have been in the process of moving from floor to floor in our house, ripping things apart, purging the accumulated stuff of years gone by, decluttering everything I can in preparation for a move to our new office. I unleashed my inner dragon – just ask my poor husband who for the most part simply stayed out of my way. This is not the first time he has witnessed my creative destruction as this has occurred with every significant move we have had.
In the notion of space management (December roadSIGNS column), I have learned that despite my best efforts, paper, books, files, binders, office materials, you name it, simply accumulate. And, I have learned that once I begin the process in one part of my house, a domino effect occurs. Example: Move old office, furniture and contents to new office. Re-paint and clean old office and move coaching/meditation room to that location. Clean old coaching/meditation room and convert to third bedroom. Build ‘murphy bed’ in new coaching room to allow for conversion into forth bedroom. Whew! Now bear in mind that at each step of the way the creative destruction part involves assessing just how much you are going to move and what needs to be purged first. All in all I have released seven large recycle bins of paper and eight boxes of books. This plus all the things that were simply thrown away has created a much lighter household. Now all I have to do is apply these same lessons to the rest of my life. Care to join me? If you do here are the questions I have been asking myself:

1. What are you prepared to discard that really doesn’t fit with your current picture of you? Consider any limiting beliefs you have about yourself, any fears that are old and dusty, any messages from parents, teachers or others which are out of date and simply need to be purged. 2. What stories have you filed away that feels like a ball and chain around your ankle? Consider people and /or situations you have not forgiven and where forgiveness is long overdue or situations which you feel you did not handle well and need to forgive yourself. 3. What relationships need to be ended? Consider those people in your life who criticize you or do not support you or people you simply don’t connect with as they have different values than you have. Let them go. 4. What is it you want to engage in that really fuels your passion? Whether this is work or play, begin to assess how and where you spend your time and decide whether this is time well spent. Consider how the activity makes you feel. If it doesn’t light you up, find something that does. Be curious and experiment. I can see that in examining these questions I have a few critical decisions to make myself, and with the beginning of another new year - what perfect timing. Here we are in 2012 where the spiritual gurus are predicting the end of the world as we know it (a pretty heavy thought I admit). Without understanding fully what that means, I have decided, like my client, that a little creative destruction will do the trick and force me to simply be more conscious of the choices I am making today and in my tomorrows. I invite each of you to do the same and to wonder what is up for you to change or shift in your life, to release anything that no longer serves you and to make space for all that is in your highest good. Watch out world, here we come! Until next time…Betty Betty Healey is the roadSIGNS Coach, coaching people back to life!. Article - Jason Setnyk (Submitted Photo) Cornwall ON -- Roller skates, helmets, knee pads, wrist guards, elbow pads, mouth guards, it's all a part of the collision sport known as Roller Derby which is coming to the Seaway Valley. Cornwall is now home to a new roller derby league. The Seaway Roller Derby Girls League received approval from the Canadian Women's Roller Derby Association, and now they are going to hold their first fundraiser. To celebrate, there will be a 70’s themed Roller Disco Fundraiser held at Agora Catholic Centre (previously known as Nativity Hall) on February 10th, 2012 from 7pm-10pm. The Roller Disco is open to the public and is a family friendly event. Advanced tickets will be available for sale at Scotiabank, located at the Brookdale Centre or you can buy tickets at the door. Retro quad skates will be available to rent, for an additional fee. People are encouraged to bring their own quad or inline skates from home, because supply will be limited. The Seaway Roller Derby Girls League is serious about Roller Derby in Cornwall and SD&G. Their hope is to get people excited about Roller Derby again and it’s new and improved team approach. Please support your local Roller Derby and attend their first annual Roller Disco Fundraiser. “About The House”
Help Joe, While I was gone over christmas my furnace quit and my pipes froze. My toilet broke and water sprayed all over my basement. My neighbour who was looking after my place noticed it and shut off the water with little damage, fortunately! So I had a plumber come and make the repairs and install a new toilet but the next day I sprung another leak in the basement. I shut off the water again and have had it off for a couple days now. The plumber is coming back but I am afraid to turn the water back on. I don't want to ruin my house. What should I do? Helen. Well Helen, Your plumber should be more thorough when doing his repairs. In a frozen plumbing situation, there is rarely just one broken pipe. Frozen water will split pipes , break fixtures, separate fittings and pop off valves. Sometimes it will partially separate a connection and it will hold water for a while until it is disturbed for some reason (this is likely what happened to you). I recommend that after the new repairs are made, you have your plumber pressure test the entire water supply system. It should be tested to no less than 100 psi and this pressure should hold for at least two hours. Any drops in pressure indicate further leaks in the system and will have to be identified before water is turned back on. All in all what a terrible way to ring in the new year. I hope the rest of 2012 is better for you. Joe I would like to wish a happy new year to all my customers and readers. All the best to you, your family and friends in 2012.

Nia or Burlesque? Which one is for me? Well, I have a hard time answering this question as I teach both techniques! But, rather I thought I’d throw the question out to you my readers. For me both are amazing avenues to explore movement and increase my health and well-being. Nia gives me balance, vitality and dynamic strength. Burlesque excites me to perform and interact with others and gives that extra kick in my step. The choice is yours! Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up just like me! A radical living and creating in both realms... Nia is a physical, mental and spiritual practice combining martial arts, dance and healing arts to promote self-healing, fitness and well-being in a body. The form of Nia takes on its own presence in each person as the class develops and is nurtured by making choices through the Sensation of Pleasure and joy, not pain and exertion. By ‘listening’ to what your body needs, wants and desires you guide it to move in its own natural timing and way. A key principle in the technique is finding, “The Body’s Way.” Everyone is different. Everybody is different. Therefore, modifying the movement given is only natural and encouraged in order to make the work efficient and enjoyable. These choices are made individually as the class is taught and in turn makes a very unique experience for each person as they are empowered to be the master of their own movement. No matter what your age or fitness level is, anyone can take a Nia class and be amazed. It is also a great introductory class to other disciplines. If the martial arts intrigue you there is Tai Chi, Tae Kwando, and Aikido! If dance is of interest, there is Modern, Jazz and Duncan dance! And, finally if the healing arts tweak your senses there is Yoga, Alexander Technique and The Work of Moshe Feldenkreis. The class is a low impact workout, done barefoot or in soft shoes if preferred. Benefits include relaxation and stress-reduction, better circulation and heart health, it supports weight loss, increases energy, strength, flexibility, mobility and agility. You walk away with a better understanding of the science of the body, a more refined and dynamic nervous system and you have better posture, balance and stability. There are many other positive outcomes as well. Check out my profile on the Nia website at www.nianow.com/amanda-marini-rohde for more information on me and the practice itself. Now, as for Burlesque I see it more as a dance or performance based practice as it in essence is a combination of both. Definition of BURLESQUE according to www.merriam-webster.com 1 a literary or dramatic work that seeks to ridicule by means of grotesque exaggeration or comic imitation 2 mockery usually by caricature 3 theatrical entertainment of a broadly humorous often earthy character consisting of short turns, comic skits, and sometimes striptease acts
As for a burlesque dance class the last definition seems to fit the best, except for the “striptease acts” component. Yes, there is a certain level of sass, and sexiness incorporated into the technique, but no removal of clothing is involved. In fact, the work fosters a sense of pride and confidence in the students as they strut their stuff across the room. Facial expression and playfulness is encouraged also. The overall experience is generally a hoot and makes for a very fun time. You may have heard of the term burlesque before, but you just don’t know until you have taken a burlesque class to truly understand the many layers that are involved in such an art. The choice is yours! Thanks for reading this week folks! I thought I would leave you with this quote to chew on. Enjoy! “It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” Mark Twain I welcome your comments and feedback. Call to Artists: Annual Juried Exhibition By Jason Setnyk Photo credit: cornwallregionalartgallery.ca
The Cornwall Regional Art Galley is accepting entries for their Annual Juried Exhibition.
Open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10am to 4pm Thursday 10am to 4pm Info : 613-932-9106 ABOUT THE ARTIST: Born in North Lancaster in 1942, Claudette Pilon, a graduate in psychology and psychotherapy from Ottawa U and St. Paul’s University, develops an interest in arts in the nineties. She sees her retirement approaching and she searches for a venue where she can continue developing her creative potential. What better than art! Through different medium she plunges in her soul and contacts her deeper self. In 2000 she participates in a creativity week-end in Montreal and she discovers her passion for art. Her projects are mostly inspired by photos of nature that she and her spouse, Gilles Routhier, have taken during their trips across Canada. Even though she inspires herself from pictures, she hates being tied down to copying for she considers this as inhibiting her expression of self. For her, mistakes are a great source of learning and making mistakes is more important than limiting self-expression. She loves the philosophy of an artist who says “Mistakes are happy accidents!”
CORNWALL’S PAST by Ian Bowering, g.g.g.
Timidly she proceeds by painting all occasion cards and then she attends shows at the Arts and Craft, Massena Library, Thousand Island, Alexandria and Centre Culturel de Cornwall. It is only in 2012 that she dares present her art work to the public in a solo venture. This represents an exciting step in her artist career!
The Award Ceremony takes plays Saturday January 28th at 2pm, and the display runs from January 25th to March 2nd 2012. This event is open to all artists (local, national, and international), in any medium, except photography (as there will be a separate Juried event for photography later in the year). Professional jurors will be selecting the work for the show and awarding the top 3 cash prizes to recognize our most talented and creative artists. CORNWALL'S ELEPHANTS Any town with a history that spans four centuries is bound to have numerous humourous stories. Two of of my favourites revelove around elephants and circuses. In Victorian 19th century Ontario elephants and circuses were synonymous. A visit by the circus was an event to savour and extend if possible. To keep the circus in town a little longer, a future lawyer, A.P. Macdonald thought it would be good sport to see how well an elephant could swim the St. Lawrence. To carry-out his plan he raised the considerable sum of $100 from his friends to entice the circus manager to test the elephant's swimming abilities. Money passed hands and the elephant was taken to the riverbank for the show to begin. Prodded into the river, the elephant took the on-lookers by surprise by heading straight for Cornwall Island. This sent everyone to all available boats "to turn the huge beast back," Macdonald regaled "they might as well have attempted to stop an iceberg. Mr. Elephant was bound for the south shore and he pushed the obstructing boats away as though they were many straws." Once safely on the island, it took the combined efforts of evryone involved to get the elephant back to Cornwall.
Edwardian Pitt Street decked out for a parade.
Having suffered once at the hands of Cornwall's youth, the circus struck Cornwall off the tour the next time it visited Eastern Ontario. Not be deprived of their circus, A.P. Macdonald and his mates learned that elephants loved potatoes. Discovering that the circus was planning to pass through Cornwall under the cover of night, the boys scattered several bushels of spuds along the route, and hid and waited. Around 2 a.m. the circus arrived. Suddenly Mr. Elephant stopped to feel about the road with his trunk. Finding a potato, the elephant ignored the prodding of his keeper while he slowly zig-zagged along the streets to find all the treats left for him. This hunt slowed the circus cavalcade to a snailspace and, when the sun finally rose, Cornwallites were treated to a free parade until the elephant found every last potato.
