CITY OF CORNWALL APPOINTS RICHARD MCCULLOUGH AS FIRE CHIEF - The City of C o r n w a l l announced that Mr. Richard McCullough has been named the new Fire Chief of the Cornwall Fire Department, e f f e c t i v e immediately. “I’m pleased to welcome Mr. McCullough as the new Fire Chief,” said CAO Norm Levac. “Mr. McCullough has been a member of the Cornwall Fire Department for over 30 years, and he brings an extensive amount of knowledge and leadership to this position.”Now in his 34th year of service with the Cornwall Fire Department, Mr. McCullough was appointed Deputy Chief in January 2009, and he has been serving as Acting Fire Chief since April 2012. “I’m very fortunate to have held every rank in the Suppression Division of the Cornwall Fire Department. This provides me with a unique perspective of the requirements and challenges of each position,” said Mr. McCullough. “I’m looking forward to working with the Firefighters, Administration and Council to give the citizens of Cornwall the best fire service possible.” BUSITECH RELEASES QWCOLLECTOR MOBILE APPLICATION TO HELP COMPANIES COLLECT DATA Busitech is a small Cornwall company with a big impact worldwide. The company produces a series of software products under the name Quality Window that are used by companies to manufacture a wide range of products from toothpaste to beer. Busitech’s niche is “finding and fixing problems”, helping manufacturers to consistently reach quality targets. The company has released a new tool to help manufacturers collect data using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. QWCollector is webenabled application that allows operators on the plant floor to collect critical process data and deliver it efficiently to managers across a company’s network. “In any typical operation, data can be collected in a variety of methods, but key data is often collected by human observation and reported by hand,” said Peter Gault, President of Busitech. “QWCollector removes the potential for reporting errors by shortening the distance from observation to reporting to one simple step.”

Arts & Culture LOCAL MUSIC TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT LIFT-OFF This year’s Lift-Off festival will be record setting: not only will it be the longest ever at four days, it will also feature more music than every before. “We have some amazing artists here in Cornwall, and its nice to see so many of them getting exposure on the big LiftOff stage,” says Graham Greer, frontman for the Barstool Prophets, who play Friday night. “Playing Lift-Off is a real treat for us” says Sean Harley, lead singer of the Trench Town Oddities. ”We play most of our shows south of the border and this is our first

time performing the event to our hometown crowd. All I can say, it is like coming full circle and it feels great!” Tickets to Lift-Off’s concerts are only $50 for all four days. Photo of Graham Greer courtesy of Jason Setnyk Photography. SKY PEOPLE LAUNCHING DEBUT CD AFTER LIFTOFF PERFORMANCE - Local dance music band Sky People will be doing double-duty on July 11th. The band will be performing their high-energy show at Lift-Off on Thursday, July 11th at 8:30 p.m. as the supporting act for Down with Webster. Later that evening, they will also be launching the release of their debut CD ‘Paralyzed’. “We decided that rather than hold our CD release on a separate night, we would

host an after-party for all of our fans after the Lift-Off show,” said Sky People’s Davey Bedard. The after-party CD launch begins at 11 p.m. at Vu Night Spot, 113 ½ Pitt Street in Cornwall. CD’s will be available for purchase for $10 and the cover charge is $2. Sky People members include Rye Vicious (Bedard), Hollywood (Guyanne Bedard), Yung Moses (Harley David), DJ SA, Soleil (Sara Murphy) and featured member Drew Edghill. Just when I thought being a woman couldn’t be plagued with any more “disillusioned” ideals that society deems appropriate. Do you know what a labia is? I had a vague idea but really got a close up look after watching a documentary called “The Perfect Vagina”. (It’s a free biopic through the wacky world of genital plastic surgery called labiaplasty). Labia are the structures that are part of the female genitalia; yes the outside portions covering of a woman’s most inner private part – her vagina! The more I read about the procedure, the more upset I became. This whole reshaping of a body part is crazy and when I read something like a large labia may prevent you from wearing tight pants, well gee it seems obvious doesn’t it, don’t wear TIGHT PANTS! Not take a 2 inch slice off to the right! This crap has got to stop. Where on earth do women start thinking that down there needs fixing? Basically, labiaplasty and vagina rejuvenation (yup, you read that right and I would think that rejuvenating anyone’s vagina would take just a little kiss from Gerard Butler, but hey what do I know) is being touted by NewWoman™ Canada, a leader in vaginal rejuvenation, as a way for women “to gain their self-confidence back and experience a healthy sexual lifestyle”.

This is so completely and utterly messed up. I did a little research as I was stunned by some of their claims and found that this surgery has no social or psychological benefits and plastic surgeons do not even explain the risks involved like infection, lingering pain and the loss of the very sensations women are sometimes seeking to enhance. Plus it’s permanent! Ok. So, are we all jumping on the bandwagon to get this relatively new, new in the plastic surgery world, procedure? Yes, yes we are. This thing called labiaplasty has skyrocketed in the past few years! What is more disturbing; a doctor in the United States has a procedure called “The Barbie” which is becoming quite popular. What is the “Barbie”? I am sure we can all imagine what the end result of this surgery would look like. I know, I know, it seems like perhaps only the rich and weird would get this type of extreme work done. No, actually, because the procedure isn’t quite as expensive as other procedures, surgeons are seeing females as young as 16 to as old as 70 in their office. You know, we can blame Brazilian bikini waxes, mainstream media and perhaps the surge of online porn. But in reality, we really have to address this issue big time because although the world keeps trying to tell us there is something pathologically wrong with our body parts, we are the ones, females, who are getting the surgeries done. No one is forcing our hand to do this extreme cutting off. I am saddened by this thought and am concerned with the loathing of labias and vaginas at large in society and this new formation of “designer vaginas”, on top of everything else. This is not sexually liberating, and I feel we have just changed one type of oppression for another. This article may have pushed the boundaries somewhat however I will not apologize for that. My hope is that this will provide a springboard for further debate amongst us and remind us that there is no such thing as a perfect “anything”. We are all unique.

REEL FISH STORIES By John Earle

KNOW YOUR PLACE by Alyssa Blais

Not for the Faint of Heart

Look out for that giant demon penis! Now that I have your attention, yes I went and saw the rated R comedy This is The End, written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and starring Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, etc. Can I stop here? Please? No one acts in the film. They all play themselves. The opening scene is Seth Rogen waiting at the airport in Hollywood for Jay Baruchel (fellow Canadian), and someone in the crowd of people says “Hey! You’re Seth Rogen. Do something funny. Do the laugh”. What follows next is a brief discussion about what gluten is and why it’s bad, 2 massive burgers at Carl’s Jr, a coffee table full of drugs, and video game time lapse. Do I smell Oscar? Oh sorry that’s Mary Jane. Then we take a short cab ride to the house warming party at James Franco’s. More drugs, awkward sex scene with Michael Cera in the washroom, and a giant penis statue. (See Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange: 1971 for reference)

Rogen and Baruchel then take a walk over to the local convenience store for cigarettes and food to satisfy their munchies, and the apocalypse hits. Ground opens, swallows almost everyone, Hollywood is in flames, and the awkward bunch hold up in Franco’s modern style home. Sitting in the theater with a group of teens behind me who texted their way through the movie, I couldn’t help but think to myself “do they think this is cool?” It’s like a 107 minute version of Entourage, where nobody does anything but get loaded or high, and act like a total ass. Emma Watson gets props for best axe swinging in a stupid movie by a young Brit. Now where was I, oh yeah, Jonah Hill gets possessed, after a brief intimate moment with a male demon. Once this is uncovered the others try and exorcise him by acting out the famous scene from the exorcist. Wait I guess they did act a little. The funniest moments might just be the movies they make - video confessionals and “Pineapple Express 2”. Yes, the world may be ending but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good time and get high! Right? I’m going to ruin it for you. EVERYONE DIES AT THE END! It’s the apocalypse! Oh and if giant demon penis’ offend you, then this is not the film for you. The 50 foot devil at the end walks through Hollywood with his Johnson swaying in the breeze. Come to think of it there’s lots of male reproductive organs in this movie and there all really large. Bottom line is if you’re looking for a film that is a massive apocalyptic drug-fest with giant demon penises, Michael Cera’s naked butt, and the life and times of a Milky Way bar, then this is your movie! Otherwise save your cash for The Lone Ranger Kemosabe! (I think I deserve an award for this review! Oh wait Dave Murphy got mine!)

I want to thank each and every one of you, not only for accepting "Shannon Champagne's A Lil'Pole Fitness" with open arms, but mostly for believing in me and yourselves!!! It was a great opportunity for me and I feel so fortunate to be able to work so closely with each of you. I feel as though I was able to learn & grow from all of you, not just professionally but also personally. The programs and workshops are designed to improve your movements, flexibility, strength, health, as well as your confidence and I feel that I am the lucky one to get to see you feel confident in your skin! I am extremely honored to have received this award, but really this award goes out to all of the members, supporters, and Caveman Strong, as I could not have done it without you !! I really appreciate all the hard work and team effort that everyone contributes weekly!! I honestly have the most amazing members and supporters anyone could ever ask for!! For that, I thank you!! Shannon Champagne

Please accept my thanks for selecting King Street Percussion as the recipient of the Seekers Choice award for the Home Based Business of the Year for 2013. I further wish to thank all of my generous supporters who turned well wishes into deeds. This recognition will serve to inspire me in the year ahead and to encourage my peers that any goal is possible. I have worked hard to prove myself in the business community, yet my pride is tempered with humility as I know full well that I could not have done it alone, and the list is far too long to thank each person individually. Thank you again for honouring King Street Percussion with this award. Rene Martin

MRS. SMELT'S '5 MINUTE SQUARES'

(We carry everything you will need at my store, Sharyn's Pantry.)

1 cup natural smooth or crunchy peanut butter (OR almond butter) 1 cup corn syrup 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup butter 1 tsp. vanilla 5 to 6 cups Rice Krispies 1 to 2 cups Corn Flakes

OPTIONAL: 1/2 cup pure semi-sweet chocolate chips for the topping

METHOD:

-Place the peanut butter, corn syrup, brown sugar and vanilla in a large saucepan. -Over medium heat, stirring constantly, bring this to a boil. Once the sugar is dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat.

the cereal to thicken the peanut butter mixture. Don't add too much cereal, you still want to see some of the peanut butter mixture or it will become too firm, once it cools. -Pour this mixture into a 9" X 13" buttered pan. Press the mixture firmly in the pan and evenly flatten the top by pressing down with your fingers. -If you want to have a bit of a chocolate topping, just sprinkle some chocolate chips right over top of the hot squares and spread them as they melt with a knife blade or spatula. The chocolate will melt as soon as it touches the hot mixture. -I just had a very thin layer and they were delicious. Just like a granola bar. -These travel well as they are very firm once they cool and set. They would be a great addition as a snack to take along on a bike ride or a summer picnic. -When I made these squares last Friday, I didn't measure a blessed ingredient. It won't matter if you put a bit more or less of any ingredient as the amount of cereal you add will pull it all together. -These are a 'Never Fail Square' and I thank Rosemary Smelt for sharing her recipe with my Mum when Mrs. Smelt volunteered at the old MacDonell Memorial Hospital back in the 1970's. A sweeter lady you will never meet! Try these squares, you will love them too!

Waking Up in Vegas I am someone who rarely ventured from my own backyard. I gave new meaning to staycations, in fact I made an art of it. When I took the rare vacation it didn't extend further than an hour or so and mainly was just a break from work. Sure it gave me a chance to appreciate local events and areas, but when I'd hear of friends trips I always felt this tinge of wonder. Work, responsibilities and other delays stopped me from pursuing any real plans; but that all changed with a text. One of my best friends in Cornwall texted me about taking a vacation, and at first I thought she was joking but when she suggested a Vegas getaway, I suddenly looked at the mounds of paper on my desk, the emails that were in my inbox, and checked my calendar; with the days off I had coming, I could do it, so I agreed. We arranged everything through texts and phone calls. I went online and booked tickets to "Le Reve" a must see water acrobatics extravaganza show, and reservations at Gordon Ramsay's "Steak" Restaurant. As the day grew nearer, I worried about the trip and all the work I had left to do, but this time I was determined. It was a whirlwind trip, with connector flights, time-changes and for me, the fear of the unknown. It was nineteen years since I had flown to Newfoundland and I never flew to the US before. I had a passport that I had never used. I left Kingston late Tuesday to meet my friend Janice in Cornwall and after about two hours sleep, we made our way to Montreal to start our Vegas vacation venture. The WestJet flight was a great experience, but once I was on the plane, my contact with my regular world faded, Internet was gone and texts and calls would be rare. I realized I couldn't submit my column either. As the plane took off I looked out the window and saw the beautiful landscape disappear, and as the online map showed our various destinations and our increasing altitude, I was excited, the nerves disappeared, and I embraced the journey.

THE SEEKER (July 12 - pg. 12)

We arrived after two flights and over eight hours with the time zone change, and the heat during our trip, made national news as Vegas experienced recordbreaking temperatures for June. As hot as it was reaching 116 F, the heat was dry and did wonders for our hair and skin. We stayed at the Paris Hotel and settled in quickly. The trip only lasted 3 nights and 4 days and much of that time was spent in airports or on planes, but we packed a lot into this trip. We visited the various hotels, since the experience of the themed hotels was like visiting an amusement park. We walked for hours stopping in at buildings to avoid the heat. They have safe walking passages throughout Vegas so crossing busy streets was not an issue. The sound of slot machines fills the air, there are people everywhere and it is sensory overload, but I would go back again. The shopping, the sites, the food were all phenomenal. The dining experience at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant was unbelievable. We ascended to our table in an elevator accompanied by the Maitre D. We made our selections and they brought us various breads to sample, sparkling water, an array of food and beverages. The coffee and dessert included stir spoons covered with flavoured Bailey's, Amaretto and other options which capped off the exquisite culinary adventure. The food was delicious and the dining experience was surreal. On our last night we were mesmerized by "Le Reve" a magical water experience. For an hour and a half we were delighted with acrobatics, synchronized swimming, and riveting performances. It was like a dream and a great way to celebrate our final evening in the city that never sleeps. The memories will always be with us. I now understand why so many people make repeat visits to the Sin City, it is much more than casinos and showgirls, it is a land of fantasy where you can see pyramids, pirate ships, castles and the Eiffel Tower all on the same strip. Cab drivers are your friends and can help you navigate the landscape. It is a glamorous town and as I glance down while I type, my Vegas nails in all their glitter still shines.

What will I be when I grow up?

It was all very clear to me at the tender age of 5 what it was I would be when I grew up, a rich and famous Artist. I remember telling people that even before I knew about any names of famous artists from the past. Looking back I chalk it up to a spillover from past life memories but whatever the case I had decided a famous Artist I would be.

by Sandra Taylor Hedges

POSTCARDS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BRAIN

SEEKING THE ARTS • SEEKING THE ARTS

Now you notice I said famous, not obscure or struggling but famous. This was because in my child’s mind I knew I wouldn’t be able to do much about my career until I finished school and moved out of the house. The matter of whether or not I was an artist was already a given as I already discovered that I could draw and paint better than any other 5 year old in Kindergarten and from what was posted up in the other class rooms most of the primary school in general. Please don’t misunderstand this was not ego, in my five year old mind it was just pure observation. Because of this observation I came to realize that not all children shared the same abilities. Some of my school mates were excellent singers, others caught on to math or spelling faster than others. At this point I decided that it was alright that we are different and that we should be grateful for the gifts we had. The problem was the school system wasn’t geared for children who were different or gifted in the arts and both myself and the children like me were often chastised for doodling, daydreaming and singing instead of paying attention. Primary school taught me that being different meant not fitting in and unless I was

PLANNING A PERSONAL BUDGET - Part 1 of 3 What you need to gather first To prepare a personal budget, you must first gather all, invoices, receipts and information for the lists below, as applicable. Be thorough; do not forget anything to ensure the accuracy of your budget planning. Ask for and keep every receipt for six months. This will give you a good idea of how much you spend monthly on a particular item, and better still, you’ll have the habit of thinking about how you spend. Listed below are samples of expense and income sources you may encounter. Expenses may occur daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, every six months or once a year. Plan ahead and divide the full amount as if you were making monthly payments. Ensure you are always one month ahead of schedule, money-wise, to pay your bills on time. Put the money away and as soon as you receive an invoice, pay it; never touch the money put away for your bills, otherwise you will be paying interest, or worse, getting collection calls.

LIST OF EXPENSES

By the time I reached High School the guidance councilor made it very clear to me that I would be best served to learn typing and shorthand so that I could find a good job and maybe a husband with earning potential. My teachers tried to convince me to go to University and become a teacher. My science teacher explained that although I was intelligent enough to pursue a University degree as a scientist or doctor, this was not a welcoming field for women so being a medical secretary might be a better option. One thing they all agreed on was if I decided to be an artist I would starve. Well stupid me I listened to them thinking I would work by day and paint by night; but I was young and worked by day and partied by night. I did get married and divorced and married and divorced and had a child so my career as an artist became all but a distant memory. Finally at the ripe old age of 50 I said “Screw this!” and moved in with my boyfriend, quit my job and started to paint again. Eight years later I’m not famous yet, but I am well known; my artwork hangs in many homes in North America and I teach and share what I have learned about being an Artist; about being different and about being true to who you really are with those that are willing to listen. No, I’m not a rich and famous Artist yet but then again I’m only 58 and haven’t grown up yet, but someday soon I will.

• As of March 22nd, 2013, Parade of Nations for the Developmentally Challenged is now a registered Canadian charitable organization.

• But why the name change? When Parade of Nations was created in May 2007, its sole purpose was to organize an annual parade and a festival that would promote and celebrate the artistic and cultural heritage of the over 350 nations and communities composing the areas of Akwesasne, Cornwall, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. Thanks to suggestions from members of the community, in 2009, the Parade of Nations' Board of Directors resolved to make fundraising a part of this festival to help our community's developmentally disabled. As required by the province of Ontario, our name had to include the community our charity would serve.

• In collaboration with other organizations, we will concentrate our efforts toward serving the developmentally challenged by helping to teach life skills and encouraging those artistically inclined to showcase their talent.

Realty Check PASSION for FASHION by Marlene Baker

The Nitty Gritty on Credit Scores Most of us don’t pay attention to our credit scores until we are ready to start making our first ‘big’ purchase such as our first car or our first home. First off, we all have a credit report which determines our credit scores. What’s a credit report? Simply put, it’s a history of your payment habits that’s been recorded by a credit reporting agency. In Canada there are 3 credit agencies but the main 2 are Equifax Canada Inc. and TransUnion of Canada, Inc. Their Job - They store, maintain and report credit information that is relevant to your credit history. This information is supplied and accessed by their members who include mortgage companies, credit unions, banks, finance companies, auto leasing companies, credit card companies, property managers, collection agencies, retailers, etc. These members update your individual credit file regularly to make sure that your information is up-todate and as complete as possible. Your Credit Score - A number of specific factors go into determining a credit score and most companies will use this to see if you’re a good credit risk or not. Typically, your credit score can fluctuate between 300 and 900. Good scores are considered to be over 680 and in the worst case scenario, rated “R” for “Rejected”. Basically, the higher your score the more likely you will be approved for a mortgage and the more likely you’ll be offered lower rates. Remember, credit score ranges don’t necessarily correspond to any particular mortgage lender’s policies for extending credit. How Is Your Credit Score Calculated - The precise formula used to get this number isn’t exactly made public but what we do know is it’s calculation is broken into five major categories. These categories are: • Payment history (35%) -This percentage category reviews how well you’ve met your obligations on making payments on prior purchases. It also looks for previous problems in your payment history such as bankruptcy and collections. If there was a problem found, it takes into consideration the size of this problem, the time it took to resolve it, and how long it’s been since the problem appeared. The more problems you have in your credit history, the weaker your credit score will be. • Amount owed (30%) -This is next largest component, how much do you currently owe to lenders. This category focuses on your current amount of debt but it can also look at the number of different accounts and the specific types of accounts that you have. Basically it describes your present financial situation and the more debt you have from many sources, the lower your score will be. • Length of credit history (15%), new credit (10%) and type of credit used (10%)-These categories are usually pretty straightforward. The longer you have a good credit history, the better. A person who’s never made a late payment in over 10 years is in a much safer position than someone who’s

Hi everyone, Marlene here for another week of tips and ideas of how to dress yourselves to look like a million and only costing you mere dollars. How has your summer been thus far? Mother Nature has sure been messing with the weather this year, but, Hey! What can we do? Enjoy or Complain? Whatever you decide to do, it's not going to change anything, so just gGrin and bear it and enjoy whatever ever comes our way. I had a wonderful time this past weekend. My partner, John & I had the opportunity to be wedding photographers at a wedding which had a leather and lace theme and then a 80's style reception, where not only the "bridal couple" changed from their wedding attire into their 80's outfits, but so did all of the guests. What a day we had! I had to change into three different outfits. I know, someone has to do it, so why not me? One outfit was for the bride and her brides maids photos at her home for noon. Then off for a quick change into another dress, new shoes and hair style, for the wedding at 2 p.m. and then after all the post wedding photos were taken of the bride, groom and their families, we had until 5 p.m, to get home change into our 80's outfits. The newlyweds then came over to our home studio to have a few photos taken with our "green screen," in their 80's look. (With the "green screen," we can place the couple anywhere or any place

been on time for two. Also, someone with only one credit card is less risky than a person with 10, so the more types of credit accounts you have, the lower your score will be. Each time you apply for credit, your score gets dinged a little. All of these categories are taken into account when calculating your overall score and no one area or incident determines your full score. *Note-Your credit score only looks at the information that’s on your credit report and doesn’t include other additional information that your lender may and can consider. For example, your credit report doesn’t include your current income and length of employment. With that being said, because your credit score is a key tool used by lending agencies, it is important that you maintain and improve it periodically. Tips on Maintaining a Good Credit Score

• Make you payments on time; pay all of your bills on time. Paying late, or having your account sent to a collection agency has a negative impact on your credit score. • Know your limits. Try not to run your balances up to your credit limit. Keeping your account balances below 75% of your available credit can also help your score. • Avoid opening new accounts and avoid applying for credit unless you really have a need for a new account. When applying for a mortgage it’s a good idea to know your credit score but it’s even more important to understand what the key factors are that can affect your score. Have you looked into your credit score? How important is your credit score to you? Share with me below!

they want to be.) Something really fun and creative to do for any occasion or just for fun. The reception was a ~Blast from the Past~ literally. There were so many creative looks that the guests had put together. I would have to say that it was the funnest wedding reception that I had ever been to. The food was delicious, the wine so fine and there was 80's music being played all night long. So many of the guests were up and dancing the night away. Even John, who rarely dances got up for a few slow dances with me. My first outfit cost me less $15. My second outfit was less then $20 and my 80's outfit was about $25. All the dresses, shoes and flowers for my hair, my accessories, including the headband were from either Value Village, Knox Church in Lancaster or from the Agape Center. So you see Ladies, if you were in my high heeled shoes, you would have had to do some creative thinking to pull this day off. Our ~Make Over Contest~ is still running... so you know what to do to enter. Until next week... Dance like no one is looking... Keep Smiling. Marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca

FINALLY! That’s the sentiment of local DIRT race fans, drivers and especially Cornwall Motor Speedway management after being able to pull off two wonderful days (back to back) over the Canada Day weekend. That collective sigh of relief came after Mother Nature finally cooperated enough in 2013 to allow fans to get their fix in.

Let’s hope this is the just the beginning of a string of great, entertaining Sunday evenings at the quarter mile DIRT oval that is called Cornwall Motor Speedway. (See pages 16 and 17 for full Speedway results.)

An obvious sign that we’ve been waiting long enough was the 56 Modifieds in the pits to kick start the Big Block show (won by Carrey Terrance) Sunday night. A packed house appreciated the ensuing show. Same thing the next day when the Speedway ran their first ever non Sunday, July 1st event.

And another thing…have you caught Blue Jays fever yet? If you’re a fan of either football or lacrosse, there’s always great local action and all you have to do is check out the local arenas (Benson Centre & Turtledome on Cornwall Island) and local fields (including Joe St. Denis). Will the Colts make another run this upcoming season? How will fans respond to the new look River Kings? Stay tuned for answers to those questions and more.

Fans showed their loyalty by simply taking in the great racing.

Cheers!

A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands After getting rained out last week at Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway and the remainder of the Canada Day long weekend spent at Cornwall Speedway for their weekend doubleheader, I was unable to get a column together for last week. Last weekend was a great weekend in Cornwall though, with a record turnout on Sunday afternoon for the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series. The pit area was overflowing with racecars, and the grandstands were absolutely packed. After all the early season rainouts it was great to see such a good turnout for Ron Morin and his Cornwall Speedway staff.

Once again Mother Nature takes over the track ... Article and photos by Rick Young www.rickattheraces.com

Once again Mother Nature put a stop to the Sunday night action at the Cornwall Motor Speedway when torrential afternoon rain caused the races to be canceled. By Tuesday the rain had stopped, and allowed the evenings races at the Cornwall Dirt Raceway Park to take place. A good field of Karts, Lawn Tractors and the brand new V Twin Dirt Demons took to the track.

This past weekend my plans were to attend Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night as they were hosting the second round of the Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep” 358 Modified Series featuring a 50 lap main event as well as a regular show for the remaining classes. On Saturday night it was Brockville Speedway hosting an Ogilvie’s Auto Triple Crown Series event with a 50 lap Modified feature and 40 lap Sportsman feature on the card as well as regular action for the Street Stocks, Rookies and Rookie Sportsman. The final stop on my weekend schedule was Cornwall Motor Speedway with a full schedule lined up, including the make up Sportsman feature from a couple weeks ago.

Friday night’s event at Mohawk Raceway could very well be labeled the most exciting night of the season. When the green flag dropped to start the 50 lap Modified feature, Billy Dunn checked out on the field and had built up a half track lead. However, a caution came out and the field was regrouped and Brian McDonald used the outside lane to rocket past Dunn on a restart and he held the top spot until they hit lapped traffic and Dunn resumed the lead on lap 34. Over the final laps the first four cars put on a great battle. At the checkered flag, Dunn crossed the line in first place ahead of McDonald, Chris Raabe, Carey Terrance and Joel Doiron. The Sportsman main event was equally as exciting as Jenna David passed for the lead on lap four and drove a fantastic race, holding off a last lap charge from Corey Wheeler to capture her first career Sportsman feature win in front of her hometown crowd. Wheeler crossed the line in second, with Louie Jackson, Robert Delormier and Darryl Nutting rounding out the top five. Stephane Lebrun was the Pro Stock feature winner, Jean Marc Larose was the bandit feature winner and Dan Ferguson captured the Mod Lite main event.

at Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night and hopefully Mother Nature will finally cooperate.

Brockville Speedway was my destination of choice on Saturday night as they hosted the Ogilvie’s Auto Triple Crown Series for the Modifieds and Sportsman. Danny O’Brien took the lead on lap seven of the 50 lap feature and never looked back, taking his third win of the 2013 season. O’Brien finished ahead of Lee Gill, Kyle Dingwall, Pat O’Brien and Bobby Herrington. Shane Pecore continued his domination of the Sportsman division at Brockville, claiming yet another win in the 40 lap feature race. Steve Barber finished in second, with Dylan Evoy, Jessica Power and Chris Herbison completing the top five. Other winners included Joe McNichols in the Rookie class, Kevin Fetterly Jr. in the Street Stocks and Tristan Draper in the Rookie Sportsman. The final stop on the weekend schedule was Cornwall Speedway. After getting halfway to the track the rain had started and not much longer I received the phone call that the races had been cancelled. It really has been a tough year at the track, and hopefully the final couple months of the year will be better than what we have seen so far. This coming week I plan to return to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night as they host a full program. The Sportsman division will not be on the schedule as they participate in the Seaway Sportsman Series at Autodrome Granby. I will be at Brockville Speedway on Saturday night and again the Sportsman division will be off as they travel to Autodrome Drummond for the same Seaway Series. I will be back

I have just lost a dear old friend. She was a dog of many qualities, and will not be forgotten. She took us to many different outdoor places, and had a joy of living that was truly amazing. Passersby called her “the incredible yodelling dog” and “the jet propelled dog”. As she became old and ill, these qualities diminished, but even this week, her last week of living, she insisted on trying to get into the water to swim.

I asked my mother a long time ago where dogs go when they die. She said “the Happy Hunting Grounds”. That’s where Java is now.

Java took us, this summer, to hot sunny pathways where we were treated to a feast of the eyes, with the full bloom of summer flowers around us, the tall blue Viper’s Bugloss, waving Daisy’s, Purple Vetch, Butter and Eggs, Buttercups, and Mallow. Do you find that without a dog’s prompting, we go about life staying within walls or trapped in cars, on sidewalks, or too busy to notice these beauties? My friend Java loved the water, and when young, she would launch herself off of rocks into the cool river, to fetch sticks, over and over again. I like to watch the water and see how the clouds, wind and water are all connected. Over the dog walking years, we have been outside in heat, cold, freezing rain, snow and even pitch darkness. I remember one particular very dark night, being on a pathway in a dense forest with two dogs and younger person. I heard an animal breathing and stepping through the forest almost within reach. I thought that this animal was one of the dogs, but then the dogs approached from another direction. In spite of the tingle of fear that went up my spine, the dogs seemed oblivious of my fright and of the other animal. I was very glad to get out of there! Dogs are part of that other world, the world of nature we only have a glimpse into. They remind us constantly that they would love to spend their days roaming, and smelling, and being free.
