CELEBRATING 40 YEARS

Dressing in PURPLE to Support CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS

Numerous members of the Media kicked off their day by snapping a few pictures at CAS early that morning, showing that everybody can come together for a good cause. Pictured above are representatives of the Standard-Freeholder, Le Journal, The Seeker and The Seaway News.

even the SEEKER CHICKS switched from Red and Black to PURPLE Julia and Mai-Liis were wearing their purple shirts on Friday, October 18th in support of CAS’ campaign to raise Child Abuse Awareness.

“As we stand, 131 businesses and 58 schools in 9 communities participated that day” said Kimly Thivierge, Public Relations Manager at the Children’s Aid Society. “1400 t-shirts went out this year. This issue has been dormant in our community for years, but over the last last 2 years, the community has really awaken!”

At CAS headquarters, the entire staff proudly wore the color of the day, but the support went far beyond the office. “I love to see all the purple shirts today” said the window cashier at Tim Hortons on Second Street E. “Even the Seeker Chicks are in Purple!”

MORE WOMEN SHOULD SCREEN FOR BREAST CANCER Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian women and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) are encouraging women in the region to get screened regularly. Breast cancer affects 1 in 9 Canadian women in their lifetime. An estimated 9,300 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with it in 2013. Sadly, 1,950 will die from the disease. Yet only 61 per cent of Ontario women aged 50 to 74 were screened in 20102011. There are still many women who would benefit from regular breast screening. “We know that it often takes a loved one to remind those they care about to get screened,” says Dr. Derek Muradali, Radiologist in Chief for the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) with Cancer Care Ontario.

Your Options are Not Limited Dating in a smaller city isn’t as awful as everyone makes it seem. In fact, if you find yourself constantly complaining about your lack of suitors you might want to re-think your own attitude, ‘cause that might be why your dating life is so dismal. Maybe it’s because you’ve already hooked up with half of the people in town, or maybe it’s cause you’re just friends with most of the decent ones, but for some reason your outlook is bleak. You can’t seem to find a lasting relationship so you blame it on the city you’re living in. Duh. But instead of playing the blame game why don’t you look inside yourself. What do you really want from someone? What do you want from a relationship? If you want something that is gonna last, then stop throwing yourself at the first guy who gives you attention. When you do this, you’re giving off the impression that you’re only in it for the onenight stands. If you want a relationship built on respect then you need to respect yourself first, otherwise no one else is going to. Sure, there are not a million people to choose from in a smaller city, but you should look at this as a positive thing. You don’t have to sift through hundreds of guys to find your prince charming because there’s a chance you already know him, maybe you even went to high school together? There are plenty of great guys in every small city and they’re not all off the market. So stop hating on your location and start seeing the possibilities. The next great love of your life could be that acquaintance you run in to at the bar from time to time, or maybe the person you always see at your local coffee shop. The good thing about finding someone who shares your geography is that you’re bound to have stuff to talk about. Whether it’s friends-of-friends or your high schools’ rivalries, you’ll automatically be able to talk about stuff because you’ll share something in common right off the bat—your city!

There are plenty of perks that come with dating someone in your region, mostly the convenience and the shared roots. You won’t know this though, until you open your mind and start listening to your heart. Travel outside of your comfort zone; meet people outside of your main group of friends. Put yourself out there and you’ll realize you never needed to travel very far at all. Love is all around us, but if you’re too busy focusing on the negative; the good will pass you by. Find yourself, respect yourself, and open your eyes to what’s right in front of you.

NATURALLY DELICIOUS ... with the Health Nut

Well I am happy to report that my new sign is up at my shop. I love the fact that it really highlights what goes on there on a regular basis:

“Naturally Delicious with the Health Nut -A place to be nourished, a place to share, a place to laugh, a place to learn”. *My new shop is located at: 812 Pitt Street, unit 40 (just past Earthway Chiropractic Clinic, on the left side. Small restaurant with the black railing). I feel very blessed to meet such amazing individuals on a weekly basis. I love seeing their reaction before they try something new and out of the ordinary. For example they have recently tried my gluten/egg/dairy free chickpea chocolate chip cookies and my raw pumpkin/oatmeal cookies. They are always pleasantly surprised….how amazingly tasty these are… I want people to live and experience how easy it truly is to live their best lives ever! I offer many raw desserts (which are not cooked and easier to digest) such as raw apple pie, raw love crumble, energy bars, raw quinoa/goji berry bars, raw chia seed/honey fruit jams… etc. Once someone sees another trying it or raving about it, they automatically want it to…it’s a great healthy domino effect. A great group of 20 participants came to my “Introduction to juicing” workshop last Friday evening. With the help of many demos, taste testing and the viewing of an amazing juicing documentary they were really able to put everything into perspective. Many are now incorporating this into their lives in baby steps. Good for you ladies for putting your health first…like our good friend Joe would say “JUICE ON MATES”!

"Are you suffering from seasonal depression or anxiety? Has the weather change affected or worsen your arthritis or fibromyalgia? Do you suffer from low back pain, hip pain or leg cramps? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, perhaps you should considered Yoga and Meditation.

Yoga has been found to calm the restless anxious mind through the yoga postures and controlled breathing. People release their stress, fears, worries and problems by focusing on their breathing and the yoga poses. Research has also found that yoga is extremely beneficial to those suffering from arthritis and fibromyalgia. Yoga opens, stretches and strengthens the joints and muscles of the body. It also helps the body to release the feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain, allowing us to feel more centered, calm and happier. Cornwall's Spirit Tree Yoga Studio offers a myriad of yoga classes that will fit everyone's work and lifestyle schedules. Classes range from Gentle Yoga, Yoga for Weight Loss to YogaFlow and Dynamic Yoga. There is a class for everyone! Take advantage of the Introductory Special: 30 days of unlimited yoga for only $50 + tax ($56.50). This is a great way to start to experience the many benefits of yoga for your mind and body! Drop-in to any class to start your yoga experience. If you would like more details, please call or email Lisa Blanchard at 613-330-4494,or at blanchard.lisa@yahoo.ca. find, and have to make it back to their colony without the horror following them. Of course in the midst of all of this they learn that there is another colony north of them that has discovered a way of revering the frozen wasteland effects but have no seeds to plant, which Sam’s colony has plenty! That’s convenient!

I know winter is around the corner and I am dreading it already. I’m not looking forward to putting on boots and extra layers for the next 5 months. I think we should invent weather towers that alter the weather of the world…wait come to think of it that’s what they did in the Colony, and they screwed it up royally.

There’s a love story as well that is present between Sam and Kai (Charlotte Sullivan – yes she’s from Toronto too) which I’m not entirely sure was needed, however she’s lovely in her post-apocalyptical hairdo…so I guess it makes sense.

Imagine a world covered in snow where pockets of survivors live underground in giant industrial complexes and mines. Our story takes place in a post-apocalyptic frozen future. For Laurence Fishburne, who plays Briggs the colonies leader, it’s also post-elyptical as well…for people who are starving to death eating veggies and protein Fishburne has certainly packed on the beef. [sidebar – he talks about this in the behind the scenes footage on the DVD which is amazing] The film follows Sam (Kevin Zegers – Canadian actor born in Woodstock ON) as he and Briggs and Graydon (Atticus Mitchell – Yup another young Canuck) head to a neighboring colony that sent out a distress signal and then went off-line. When they arrive they are astounded and horrified by what they

Then we get to Bill Paxton who plays Mason, and as his name suggests is an ex-jar head who is now the law. You get a cold. You go into isolation. Then he kills you. Pretty much the crux of his character. I enjoyed this movie. It’s Canadian, filmed in Canada, and the special effects are really quite amazing. I would have tweaked the story a little, but all in all, it’s a good, cold Hollywood of the North production! As far a premise, this movie’s post-apocalyptical. Don’t expect it to be anything else. Before buying I read a review of the “over realistic” gun fire. Really? What because every time they fire a shot it sounds like they are shooting in a basement? The snow crunches below the actors’ feet because it was real snow. They shot the underground scenes miles underground. Can’t get any more realism than that! Next week I’ll have my review of the Hunt. Until then my filmsies (sorry for the typo last week) don’t chew that gum under your seat! Unless of course you left it there…

SOUP SEASON HAS BEGUN

How quickly our weather seems to change. Last week I was out in my yard picking my raspberries in a short-sleeved teeshirt. This morning is cold and rainy. It's is time to enjoy a lovely steaming bowl or mug of homemade soup. Last week, after roasting one of my store's locally raised, plump juicy chickens, I saved the carcass and made a big pot of delicious and nutritious soup.

GOOD CHICKEN SOUP

I no longer keep my ‘pages’, I am more prone to simply record random thoughts and ideas as they show up in my day. There are no rules in my world although serious journal writers would disagree with me.

Writing and Self Discovery

Writing, if you choose this path, is there to serve you, no one else. Writing for self-discovery is designed to feed your soul, lift your spirit, help you to see yourself through the lens of your inner world rather than through the eyes of others. It is designed for appreciation rather than a place for your self-critic to put you down.

I never saw myself as a writer nor did I set out to become an author. Pulling my thoughts together in what has now become a total of five books seems more like a happy accident than a specific goal.

That said, I suggest that if you decide to take up your pen, you begin by recording everything you know about yourself, your gifts, strengths and values. As you place these attributes on the pages of your journal, you create an amazing foundation for moving forward and directing your personal journey.

Writing really happened when I began to understand that when I wrote things down, I shifted. Journals became a place to ‘dump’ my hurts and vent my anger; a place where emotions which are sometimes difficult to express verbally could be placed and not judged by others. Recording my ideas has allowed me to expand them.

Thanksgiving Day I picked up a book at a friend’s place and found the following poem by author Dawna Markova, which describes my relationship with writing:

If your brain works at all like mine, ideas appear in rapid succession and unless written down, disappear. As a result I always have a journal with me to simply capture what is in my head, imbed it on the pages and move on. These are the ideas that spawn my work and also feed my own sense of self-discovery. In her book The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron writes that “the pages are a pathway to a strong and clear sense of self”. It was her book that started my writer’s journey. One of the exercises within the twelve week program outlined within the book are something called Morning Pages, which Cameron refers to as the primary tool for creative recovery.

What are Morning Pages: three pages of handwritten, stream-of-consciousness writing. Yes I am aware that most of you now write with a computer and I have to share that writing longhand is different. Somehow the physical connection of pen in hand is different than pecking at keys. Stream-of-consciousness means that once you begin writing, you do not stop until all three pages are filled. At first it may be nonsense, like ‘good morning world, I have no idea what I am writing about this morning, blah, blah…’. That’s okay for at a certain point something switches and your hand starts writing things that seemingly come from out of nowhere and now you are in the ‘juicy zone’. As I began my own writer’s journey, I kept to the habit of morning pages for over a year. Poems emerged, feelings were exposed, truths realized. I came to know me. Because I could record anything, free of the judgment of others, I had a sense of freedom rarely experienced in my outer world. In this type of writing, grammar doesn’t matter nor does punctuation. There is no English teacher staring over your shoulder assessing these things. You write only for yourself. Morning pages is only one of many writing tools however.

Thinking Ourselves Home I write to fuse inside with out, to salve wounds and broken dreams. I write to understand the many things no one has told me, to stroke my moments clean, to squeeze them into tiny mirror fragments shining with mind light. I write to turn my bold to ink, to fertilizer, to sap. I write so that my yes can feel, so that my heart can lick, so that my soul can crawl from its hiding place and gaze upon a mystery which can be neither solved nor explained. I write to breathe my spirit live. FINAL THOUGHTSI write to breathe my spirit live. Even though you may not see yourself as a writer, I encourage you to pick up the pen. Do it for YOU, no one else. Do it to serve the journey, not to write a book. Do it to find yourself and to discover who you are today and who you are choosing to become, not to live in the past. Do it to celebrate yourself. I invite you to join me at the Cornwall Public Library, Sunday October 27th at 2:15 p.m. I will be speaking about writing as a practice for self-discovery as part of the Writer’s Fest. Betty Healey Betty Healey is an award winning author, coach and inspiring speaker. Join Betty and Jim for a one-day Living Your Strengths Coaching Circle, Saturday, November 23rd, 2013. I saw flashbacks to sleepovers and old chats and couldn’t help but reflect on all the past dreams, ideas and thoughts of where we would be by this age. I don’t think any of us thought this is where we would be in life, but we give each other support, suggestions and best of all a sounding board. We visited a local pub with another friend in tow and in no time the three of us were in a time travel kind of feel where at times it felt like the 80’s and then we were back in the present. We shared stories about our kids, about our current life and where we want to be. After some time at the pub we headed back to my place where we dipped into the Sangria my sister provided and it was the perfect drink for the kind of evening we wanted. We laughed, at times felt at the brink of tears and it didn’t matter how long it had been since we last saw each other, we still have that connection.

My friend Sue did stay for the entire weekend, which did not please my anti-social cat who kept peeking around the corner and giving the evil eye, but she did eventually try and come around though never fully engaged. After checking out the malls on Saturday and a nice brunch, we decided that the weather was questionable so an afternoon of movies was not a bad idea. The Heat was a perfect selection as we laughed at this female buddy movie. My friend is one of the best cooks I know and when she showed up with muffins and her famous fudge, it was a welcome gift. I did make spaghetti for us on Saturday and although I am not the best cook it was good, although better the next day. Overall it was a great weekend, and it was a nice break for her and I enjoyed the company. After a busy week, it was nice to take it down a couple of notches and enjoy some time with one of the people who knows me best. We vowed not to wait so long for another visit and as the tail lights disappeared and the eventual highway drive was in sight, I was a little homesick and definitely felt that pull. That old feeling gets me everytime.

Last weekend was a great opportunity to catch up with friends, as one of my best friends visited me at my new place in Kingston. When you get together with the people who have known you since you were a young teenager, it does mean some reminiscing is going to happen and you discover how much you have changed and what never will.

That Old Feeling

Organizing A Bedroom - All Ages Part 6 of 6 - TEENAGER'S ROOM - 3 (in 3 parts)

Girls' Beauty Products

• Group your makeup by categories, for example, makeup, manicure supplies, perfumes, other personal things, etc. • Items you don't use very often can be stored on a shelf in the closet. If there’s a lack of shelf space and there’s a convenient dresser nearby, store them in the bottom drawer, or in a less convenient but still accessible space. • Use a hanging shoe rack over the closet door to hold scarves, hair brushes, blow dryer, curling or straightening irons, and other styling accessories.

Desk Use the same techniques as for the dresser drawers. •

Pens, Pencils And Miscellaneous Items Get rid of all but 10 pens and pencils. Only keep the ones you really like. It doesn't matter that it’s a good pen if you don't use it. • Put interlocking containers in the drawers to hold pens, paper, glue, note pads, tape, computer disks, pushpins for a cork board, notes from friends, whatever you need. • If you don't have enough drawers in your desk for everything you need to put away, use containers on top of the desk. Use magazine holders for school papers or a desk top file sorter. If you can afford it, find a lateral filing cabinet (legal size is best) for filing school papers properly.

Bed Your teen should make their bed every morning. It only takes a couple of minutes, and the sight of a made bed is a great source of energy.

School Backpack Once homework is completed, it should go in the backpack right away, ready for the next day. The backpack itself should be hung on the desk chair or put on the desk itself, ready for snatching on the way out the door for school. ‘Self discipline is the key to success for anything anyone wants to achieve in life.’

Hi there to all of you beautiful people reading the most informative and positive paper in town, this week. I am so glad to be able to write in this local paper and I am Proud to be an Ambassador for the Seeker and this lovely city of Cornwall. I have been continuing to enjoy this gorgeous Fall weather. The leaves are leaving us for another year... So you had better get out to enjoy them while they last.

I have been made Cornwall's Pay It Forward's Fan of the Week, for the fifth time this week. I am so very Proud and Honored to be so. I truly believe in Paying it Forward. Whether you pay for someone's coffee, or meal or just by opening a door or by giving away a friendly smile. Smiles are Free, so Freely give them away. Make someone else's life a little more happier today, tomorrow or at some time. It not only makes you feel good, it certainly makes that other person feel Special.

Last week I had a most lovely and fun time shopping with John for some new Fall items at Value Village. I found myself a "treasure" that I had always wanted. It is a black, woolen, cape-like, poncho, coat thingy that is trimmed with faux-leopard fur. It is fabulously warm, stylish and looks so fine. I do have some matching leopard- print items to go along with my new purchase of course. A couple of hats, a purse, some boots, a scarf and even some earrings and a bracelet. All accessories are fun to have for any kind of outfit you are planning to wear. Exercise??? I thought you said Accessorize. Hehehe :D

Tip of the Week: Matching is a good thing!!! When you are wearing all black or brown, add a animal print by matching it up with a scarf, hat or a pair of boots or gloves. Or you can add a bold red or orange item, as these colours go well with black and or brown. When you are going to be wearing any "monotone colours" be sure to add a Splash of colour to your outfit. It just makes life a little bit more FUN and Colourful!!! That's what we all want?..Right??? :D Life is only travelled once...Today's Moments becomes Tomorrow's Memories. Enjoy every moment, GOOD or BAD because the Gift of Life is Life Itself!!! Please Pay it Forward. Marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca

Photography: Focus and Depth of Field How does focus affect the mood or 'purpose' of the picture? Can changing which part of the picture is in focus change the mood or feeling of the picture? Come and learn about depth of field and focus. Bring your camera; after a very short talk, (15-20 minutes) we'll try to spend an hour putting these notions into practice. DON'T FORGET YOUR OWNER’S MANUAL - every camera is different. Don Mitchell will lead this activity.

Exploring Oils Pastels Definition: Oil pastel (also called wax oil crayon) is a painting and drawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons. Unlike "soft" or "French" pastel sticks, which are made with a gum or methylcellulose binder, oil pastels consist of pigment mixed with a nondrying oil and wax binder. The surface of an oil pastel painting is therefore less powdery; blending can be challenging, results amazing…

SPOOKTACULAR EXPERIENCE OZZY IN CORNWALL

Hailing from Toronto is Canada’s ultimate tribute to the madman himself, the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne. Anyone who listens to rock and roll today has heard of Ozzy Osbourne, the contribution he has made to music is undeniable. From his early days with Black Sabbath, where it all began, to his immense solo career, Ozzy has continued to produce music of high quality and intensity. Blizzard Of Ozz continues in that same tradition as exemplified by Ozzy, featuring musicians with over a century worth of professional experience amongst the four members. Blizzard Of Ozz plays a wide range of Osbourne material, from the first album with Black Sabbath, right up to his latest as a solo artist.

TOMORROW - SATURDAY OCTOBER 26

Lead vocalist is Steve Grzybala, (right) an OZZY look-alike and sound-a-like. His on stage persona leaves you wondering if you are watching OZZY OSBOURNE himself. Steve has been doing OZZY on stage for the past 7 years with tribute bands Nativity In Black and Strictly Sabbath. Guitarist Roland ‘Wylde’ aka Blakk Zakk has toured and recorded two albums with signed international recording act Inner Thought of Dwell/Witchhunt Records. He has also played for tribute bands to Iron Maiden (Ruskin Arms), Metallica (Blackened) and cover band, That ‘70s Band. Drummer Niall ‘Aldridge’ has previously played drums for Just Alice and numerous other bands. Always in high demand, Niall has recorded several albums and a live DVD with popular indie act, Smeer. He continues to make original music today with SFD and can be seen playing live with Canada’s sensational vocalist Patrizia. Bass player Jennifer ‘Butler’, a.k.a. Lady Evil, has cut her teeth with Black Sabbath tribute acts, Paranoid, and Sun of Sabbath. She has played and recorded with several original acts, including Visions of the Night, Bound Ether, and the Sabbath-like Keef
