I have pretty much given business to all of them at one time or another. Some, I can be seen at fairly regularly, others not SO much, but I make a point of trying everything our beautiful city has to offer. The one week I do not spend locally per se--and I really shouldn’t say week, when in fact it’s more of a weekend--is that of Ribfest. On that weekend, I choose to support a local organization, The Cornwall Seaway Lions Club, and attend an awesome festival that took a year of hard work and tedious planning to put together. I choose to go to Lamoureux Park, which is transformed into a beautiful land of amusement for young and old, and listen to amazing musical acts, some local, some not, absolutely at no cost to me. And, YES, if I do get hungry, I spend my money on overpriced ribs from out-of- towners who brought award-winning BBQ right into my backyard. I don’t mind, because it’s not the food I pay for, it’s the experience. And it’s only once a year. On Monday morning, after the festival was all said and done, I was surprised to see a lot of negative comments on my facebook feed. People were expressing grievances with the fact that all the money that would have otherwise lined the pockets of our

local eateries, went to Ribfest. They forget that for every dollar that that was not spent in a restaurant, a dollar was probably spent at another local establishment. Campgrounds were packed, hotels were filled and local vendors looked like they were having a good week-end, sales wise. It is hard to quantify the ultimate impact an event such as Ribfest truly has on a community. Does it help? Does it hurt? Just in this week’s edition, you will see a few arguments for and against holding them. I, for one, think that festivals like these contribute greatly to putting Cornwall on the map. There is no telling how many people came across our wonderful city by way of attending such an shindig. Passersby may fall in love with our waterfront. It’s a gorgeous waterfront! They may think “Hey, what a charming little city! I’ll have to come back and try one of the restaurants sometime!” Some may even like it so much that they will think of relocating or starting a business here…. You think that scenario is far-fetched? Yours truly happened to stumble upon Cornwall some 7 years ago and saw the beauty of it all. I’m sure it can happen to others. Ribfest saw an audience of more than 60,000 again this year. Certainly, we’ve benefited from it in some way or another.

Cinderella Homes ... a Moth in a Cocoon, transforming into a Butterfly! Article and photos by Mary-Rose Hilgers & Associates
removing the floors and walls, some treasures were found. A sap tap made of wood, an unidentified wooden tool, an assortment of bottles, including an apothecary bottle from Morrisburg druggist Levi F. Selleck and a monthly magazine dated 1882 titled ''The Voice''.
BEFORE & AFTER PICS Appointment made - excited. I seem to get excited more and more these days working with the Seeker Newspaper. Up at 4:30 am and it’s already 9 am on Tuesday, July 22. Address 22 Laurier Drive, Morrisburg. Wow, I arrive on time, quite nervous with this new assignment! What a metamorphosis! I saw this home a few months earlier. It’s like a moth in a cocoon, transforming into a butterfly. Who would have thought it possible? Gerry Zeran of Cinderella Homes is a true visionary, with a full crew on the job - everyone working. Zeran is amazing. I can hear the passion in his words as he talks about this home and it’s former owners, the late Fred and Yvonne Veley, having researched the history that neighbours and others have provided to him. Here starts my interview with Gerry. Where did and how did this love affair with reconstructing old homes start? “This is the sixth Cinderella makeover for Zeran Homes since 1991; the first being in Cornwall. It all started with my Dad” he answers without hesitation. “He was always doing construction. Dad had a saw mill which is still operational.” Why reconstruct these old homes? Can’t they be a money pit? This is a Seaway home, moved in the 1950’s from its original location in Morrisburg, now located across from the Morrisburg Golf Course. There is due diligence involved checking the structure, basement, plumbing and electricity; basically the bare bones of the house. These bones were in pretty good condition. A new furnace, a fairly new roof and a new hot water tank made this a worthwhile project. The condition of electrical system dictates whether it is viable or not. There are many details to consider when scouting a house destined to be completely restored. One key consideration is: Location, Location. Location. This setting is beautiful with the Morrisburg Golf Course in front and behind, with a backyard that came straight out of a magazine, neighbours George (Jr.) and Helen Beaupré. Why this area? I played Junior B Hockey here for many years and grew up in this vicinity. In fact one of my hockey teammates, Billy Veley, (son of the late Fred and Yvonne Veley) has come to see the transformation and was definitely impressed. How has it been to get permits? This can be expensive and difficult but the building inspector and the folks from the township have been super. No hang ups or hiccups; the have worked with us extensively. They have guided us all the way and I could not be more pleased. How has it been to get permits? This project will be completed any day now. Do you have another Cinderella house in the works? With a smile Gerry tells me that he has found another but won’t give any details just yet. This present “labour of love” has been about four months in the works. These makeovers are Seaway houses that have been moved from their original locations during the 1950’s when the Seaway was expanded. The stairs have been relocated, both those going up and the ones going to the basement as well. While transforming this quaint two-story home which included
In April of this year all the walls were exposed showing a total of six doors which had been used in the past. When Zeran purchased the home only two doors were being used and the others had been covered over. Zeran has reinsulated (walls and attic) so even Cinderella would approve.
BASEMENT: Zeran leads the way to the basement. Even here everything has been met to code. The site and building inspectors all have assessed the property throughout the restorations. KITCHEN: The kitchen and dining room have been completely restored and revamped in an open concept. This is absolutely beautiful. Located at the back of the house, Zeran has opened up the kitchen even more with patio doors that allow so much light to pour in and also give access to the wrap around porch. POWDER ROOM: A two piece powder room that is so picture perfect when you enter the back door, is a splendid surprise. Knowing that this house was originally constructed around 1880 these features are a welcome addition. Zeran pinpoints the age of the house from the history that has been compiled. LIVING ROOM: A new corner fireplace is the focal point in this charming living room with a beautiful mantle which was milled at Zeran's sawmill. There are new windows, new doors and beautiful floors but to me the bonus of this home is the front wraparound porch. The entire two storeys of this simple home are totally restored to make this into a true Cinderella story. Upstairs there are three bedrooms. Once upon a time you would have had to walk through each bedroom to get from one to the other and to the bathroom but Zeran has changed this, giving each room its own access from a newly made hallway. MASTER BEDROOM: Spectacular! Overlooking the Golf Course. BATHROOM: Beautiful with a new dormer window. A must see! BEDROOMS 2 AND 3: At the back of the house, mirroring each other, these bedrooms have built-in drawers and closet, making the bedrooms more space-efficient. This Cinderella house has been transformed from top to bottom, both inside and out. This almost completes the house tour and story. I asked Zeran '' What is the “Wow” factor for this project?" He stated, “The Wow factor is the location and the wraparound porch”. Zeran is spot on and I can't agree more. The landscaping is to be completed shortly. The garage as well will be restored. My hat goes off to Zeran for his insight and vision, and to his crew for making this transformation. This takes a team who is onboard with the same goal of wanting this home to be the best it can be! Kudos to all who took part in this project.
THERE WILL BE AN OPEN HOUSE THIS WEEKEND, Sunday, August 3rd at 22 Laurier Drive, Morrisburg • 1 - 3 pm. I’m sure this Cinderella home will not be on the market for long - BUT Don't take my word for it go and see it for yourself! For more info on this amazing contractor visit www.handyfolkz.com or call him at 613-930-3819.

By Heather A. Robertson photos by Jason Setnyk Photography What’s Up? ARTS IN THE PARK…That’s what! Tuesday evening, despite clouds and a stiff breeze, I went to the riverfront to enjoy the live entertainment at the Bandshell. What a great way to spend a few hours! Restful, peaceful, communing with nature, and appreciating what this community has to offer: terrific music (local and visitors), kids on bikes, folks with dogs, individuals, couples, and whole families, all very casual and comfy. It really merits bigger crowds…and all for free. I have gone often, was never disappointed. Warm-up music was provided by Grace Willison, accompanied on guitar by her father, Eric, also a wellknown singer from the local band, The Shiners. Their music is

downright athletic when Lauren’s hubby started throwing tambourines out into the audience. Little children on bikes were acknowledged as they pedaled past the stage. They were musicians and they were entertainers! We were encouraged to stick around after the performance so they could meet new friends. They sounded sincerely grateful for the opportunity to perform in Cornwall, and commented that this was the first time a community had given them a giftbag of goodies with a “T-shirt, soap, and other good stuff”. Check out the schedule for upcoming performances. Pack a bottle of water, a lawn chair (in case there’s a crowd), some munchies, a warm sweater or jacket (mine has a hood) and perhaps a blanket. This is a marvelous opportunity to hear different types of music. Arrive when you can, leave when you like. Win/win.

In the second set she continued to perform most of the songs with help from the other 4 members of the band, one being her husband. This group had also written many of the pieces they performed, and they delighted the audience by playing each other’s instruments, dancing around while playing, clapping, even trying(rather unsuccessfully) to encourage us to snap our fingers to the music. We did draw closer to the stage to sing along and got

Eric’s introduction of the next group was warm, complimentary, and welcoming. Lauren Mann and The Fairly Odd Folk were talented, fun, and folksy. country, soft and soulful, with very down-to-earth lyrics. They have both written songs, and explained the background and meaning behind some of them. I found myself singing or humming along, thoroughly entertained. The family devotion is obvious, right down to their sharing one pair of sunglasses. Song’s over, your turn! I was sure I’d remember the names of the songs, but my favourite was “Let’s Do Nothing Together”.

with Marlene Baker Hello there to everyone of you wonderful people sitting, standing, or even lying down reading Cornwall's most Positive and Informative paper this week. That means we still have almost two months of summer left to enjoy. SO GO & Enjoy!!! I enjoyed my 54th birthday this week and you know, I feel really happy about turning another number on the "Age Clock". A lot has happened to me, and for me in 2013/14. I was on the Board of Directors for a business group the ~Cornwall Business Network~ that John & I, and nearly 50 other businesses are involved with. I was nominated for an award for ~Contributor of the Year~ for my column, ~Positively Marlene~. I didn't WIN the award (this year), but, I felt like a WINNER nonetheless for being nominated and for being in the Top 5. I got to enjoy a lovely evening of dining, drinking, gambling and dancing with John and all of the other nominees and their families at ~Cornwall's Golf & Country Club~ for the ~Seeker Choice Awards~. I was also involved in a ~Retro Pinup Contest~ put on by one of my lovely daughters, Ella Rose of ~Modella Media~ in June. I didn't win here either, but, I had a really fun evening nonetheless for being among several pretty, young ladies that were half my age. I started doing Pole Fitness classes with Shannon Champagne, in December and Meditation Classes with Omsatya Yoga in March. I also had been nominated for ~Fan of the Week~ by ~Cornwall's Pay It Forward & Random Acts of Kindness~ over a half a dozen times this year. I was their Top Fan of the week, in the month of July. Of this I am very proud of myself. I have had the utmost joy of meeting more wonderful and positive people that have become business associates or close friends. But, my Greatest Joy this past year was that I became a grandmother for the fifth and sixth time, to two handsome little boys, Odin and Blake. I am one very proud and beaming Grandmother of five grandsons now. The other grandsons names are Lincoln, Sampson and William. Of course I can't forget my One & Only beautiful and precious granddaughter, Abigail. Thank you kindly to all of you very Special Individuals that have made my 53rd year so Grand & Complete!!! As this 53rd year of mine fades away into the past... I can honestly look back at this year and SMILE...from earring to earring. I do look forward to the NEW Adventures and all of the exciting things that lay in store for me in my 54th year. Continuing to talk about my Birthday Week... "When one gets to be over a half century years old (like me)... One day, just isn't enough!" said Me, Myself & I. So... My Birthday Celebrations started last Saturday when John brought me to ~Uncle Brian's Tattoos~ located right here in Cornwall, Ontario at 319 Montreal Rd. I had asked for a tattoo for my birthday... So there we were in a beautifully decorated and very clean place that looked more like a hair salon, than a Tattoo Shop. I now had to get myself "Psyched up" to endure

perhaps two or more hours to get my beautiful, Peacock feather tattooed on my back. The owner and main tattooist, Brian, was friendly and very professional the whole time I was being tattooed. He made sure I was comfortable at all times and that made me feel so calm and at ease. From time to time Brian encouraged me by telling me that I was doing good and that I was sitting so well for the tattoo. It actually took less time to do it because I was so relaxed. Brian had apprenticed at ~Planet Ink~ in Ottawa, under several top tattooists for 11 years and has been doing his "Tattoo Art" here in Cornwall, for three years now. If You or anyone else you know wants an exceptionally well done tattoo, then please give ~Uncle Brian's Tattoos~ a call. P.S. The shop's name was inspired by Brian's nieces. For my last Sunday of being "fifty three," (My Gosh! I'm getting old!) John brought me for breakfast at ~Kassy's Pub~. (the old Remington's location on Montreal Rd. across from the Port Theatre.) It is a very clean and beautifully decorated place with wooden paneling and flooring. The food is delicious and the service is always fast. Kassy's waitresses have lovely smiles on their pretty faces and are always friendly and courteous to their customers. Kassy's had their ~GRAND OPENING~ on Thursday (July 31st) and will be extending this FUNSHIP into the weekend. There will be all kinds of fun activities going on with LIVE MUSIC and Delicious Food to be had. P.S. ~Kassy's Pub~ was named after the owner, Mike Labelle’s daughter, who by the way, works at her namesake Pub. My Birthday Week doesn't end just yet... I am to be getting myself readied for a whole weekend of "BIRTHDAY FUN" with many of my lovely and sweet friends like Jamie (Tyo Cruz), Melissa Dawn, Natalie Harvey etc.. to name, but a few. Oh Yes, I almost forgot..last Tuesday my good friends Natalie & Mike Pliss of ~Mobile Gamerz~ had John & I over for a delicious pasta dinner and some yummy goodies. It's so lovely having friends like this that feed you and make you feel so good from the inside out. It's Vacation Time... So the next issue won't be out until August 22nd. There certainly will be a lot of catching up for me to do. You've ONLY got three (3) Choices in Life... GIVE UP, GIVE IN, OR GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE GOT!!! (I've chosen the latter... How About You???) Ta Ta for now everyone have yourselves a most delightful few weeks playing, singing, dancing, swimming, biking, drawing, shopping, painting and or - try this...talking to one another "face to face." (NOT on your cell phones, smart phones, Ipads, Ipods, Tablets or face book.) Please Pay It Forward in some small way, today. Smile & the Whole World Will Smile Along With You.

The idea of a burger joint serving over 41 burgers came to Dominique Gilgen when she was pregnant with her daughter. The whole 9 months, she was craving burgers. Any kind of burger! Chicken burgers, beef burgers, lamb burger… exotic ones too! She couldn’t get enough! Nine months sure is a long time eating the same thing over and over again, so her husband, Ahmad, had to get creative and the Truffles lineup was born.

AND THE WINNERS WERE...
It was a great honor to be a BBQ judge for the Ribfest. Being a born & bred Texan, I do enjoy a good BBQ, I tell you what. Hence, the Ribfest weekend is by far my favorite weekend in Cornwall. This is when I feel here as I felt growing up there in Texas, eating finger-licking good BBQ, under the umbrella of sunshine and the sounds of live music, in a conviviality that gives individuals a sense of belonging. There I was, bbq sauce all over myself, in the midst of countless others tasting life through a barbecue extravaganza made possible by a group of outstanding ‘Ribbers’—as barbecue chefs like to be called—and I realized these were not going to be easy judgements to reach.
First off, they were all excellent Ribbers, but if everyone was rated a 10, how could one emerge above the rest as the clear winner? If every judge rated only 10s, there would be no winner! So, my score card went into a decimal level on each category, 9.7, 9.8, 9.9, etc. That was the only way for me to make a decision. This was tough. Moreover, making this even tougher to judge, was a Northern delicious taste added to some sauces, and inasmuch that this is Canada, presented me the dilemma as to whether I should judge from what I thought might appeal locally or would I judge objectively. Of course, since it’s impossible to judge objectively, I was back to the original dilemma.Adding to this dilemma is the fact that on the subject of barbecue, there is actually very little that barbecue aficionados can agree upon. We can’t even agree on how to spell our obsession (Barbecue? Barbeque? BBQ?), let alone the paragon of barbecue. Probably, because in the Barbecue Belt—Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas—it is a little different from state to state, and what may appeal most to an individual is derived from lifelong experience of having been raised in the culture of bbq.
That’s what I brought to the table with me, a long history of having eaten barbecue in every state of the bbq belt at some point or another in my life, as I spread all that delicious meat out before me in a smorgasbord of bbq delight, to taste, smell, feel, devour, and, ultimately, to judge upon, decisively and without reservation. Oh my goodness gracious, it was all just exceptionally wonderful! I rated each as I personally thought was the best barbecue of all. Having seen the final results, apparently I wasn't the only one making these judgements.

Making the meat delicious isn’t everything about being a great barbecue experience. It’s also about the culture driving the festival. The enthusiasm and high spirits. The charm & charisma. This was a visibly prevalent attitude of the Ribfest, from everyone involved in creating the experience—Ribbers, Volunteers, Musicians, Beer tent, Carnival workers, EVERYONE. Great job, Cornwall Seaway Lions Club, for having put together such an awesome event.

Ribfest serves up a good time ...
Article and Photos by Jason Setnyk Cornwall Ontario -- A reported 60,000 were in attendance last weekend for Ribfest 2014 at Lamoureux Park in Cornwall. People enjoyed ribs, the midway, and live music entertainment. Members of the Cornwall River Kings Booster Club were also in attendance this past weekend. Some of the bands that played included Glory Days (A Bruce Springsteen cover band), Frontrow, and Shake the Tree as pictured here.

by Tish Gibbs Earlier this summer we decided to go to the Upper Canada Bird Sanctuary. The leaves were just starting to give some shade as we made our way through the forest, then onto the bike path with water on both sides. There we were met by a beautiful unspoiled scene: hummocks of tall grass in the water, floating logs, swamp bordered by scrub ascending into more mature trees. I was delighted to see a turtle sunning itself on a log. Then, I saw another, and another, and then a large log with eleven turtles on it! We made our way to the hunting blind after a walk through a mature pine forest. There, in front of us, was a porcupine climbing up the trunk of a white pine tree. It was close enough that we could see its yellow teeth. We did not stay there long, for fear of causing the creature any anxiety. At that point, I thought ”What’s next?”. There, stepping through the trees was a large deer who took off quickly as soon as it sighted us.
We sat in an open clearing bordered by Hawthorn trees and I heard the familiar sound of the Bobolinks, whose bubbling song reminds me of a bird with verbal diarrhea! Loss of habitat has made these beauties less common now. That day, they gave us a spectacular performance of swooping and landing (catching bugs no doubt),while burbling out their song, as if energized by the sun and warm air. What a display of nature we had that day! I was encouraged also by the people we encountered along the way – lots of parents with children enjoying the simplest of pleasures. And, by the end of the day I had counted 35 turtles! Did anyone hear the interview on CBC radio with Farley Mowat, made the week before his death? His desperate plea was that we need to set aside reserves of land where animals and plants can live freely and where people should not be allowed. These reserves are, according to him, needed for the survival of not only the natural world, but of ourselves since we are a part of it. I share his views completely.

with The Health Nut I can’t believe that I will be celebrating my 1 year anniversary at the shop this weekend...how fast time flies when you are living out your passion!! I am so very excited and happy !! I want to thank each and every one of you that have walked through my door in the last year...you are all part of this health journey and I learn from all of you every Saturday. To see you come in every week, is just such a heartwarming feeling. I sometimes have to pinch myself to make sure it is not a dream… I feel very blessed to have met the most loving, caring and amazing individuals in our community…what a beautiful place we live in.
When I first had the idea to find a little space of my own, my main goal was to offer to all of you a healthier option that would be delicious and make you feel satisfied. Something different that would help you make the small steps towards better choices. My main goal is to have you sample and enjoy recipes that will make your taste buds recognize the ingredients and want to explore and discover more. When I offer my Healthy Eating Cooking Seminars, Juicing/smoothie seminars, Reboot your life seminars etc…this is to show you that it does not have to be complicated, we really just need to go back to basics, as our ancestors lived and find the simple life and way that we were meant to live. On my shop walls, I share some of my favorite health mottos…. “You are what you eat” says it all…it is my favorite saying on my shop wall. Having had the opportunity to meet David Wolfe last year in Montreal was a highlight of my health journey. He is a true raw foodist and just such a smart, down to earth model of clean eating…felt so blessed to live that seminar with my husband. “Celebrate your greatness” is a special one as well… for the simple reason that when I battled with weight issues for many years I never felt worthy or allowed to feel good about myself. It took me a very long time to look in the mirror, feel comfortable with who I am and realize that I matter. “Food is thy medicine” is one of the most important ones, it took me a long time to realize this. I was always the one quick to grab any medication instead of letting nature do what needed to be done to make me better. I was toxic and really needed to take a good look at what I was becoming, I needed to make changes for the better. I am so happy that my space has also become a place to meet, learn, share and laugh. There is often a local charity or fundraiser event going on at my shop. Helping those in need is a big part of my life. A community becomes stronger when it is working together towards the same goal. Cornwall rocks when it comes to this!! Due to the request of many….and to mark my 1 year anniversary in a special way, I will have my Raw Turtles available for purchase this Saturday, August 2nd…come early so you are not disappointed. My shop is located at 812 Pitt Street, unit 40…only open Saturdays, 8am to 4pm….cash only basis please..thanks!! Please make sure to check out my newly updated website at www.thehealthnut.ca and you will also be able to view my new virtual tour of my shop….I am very proud of this… Thanks again Cornwall for an amazing first year, love living out my passion!! Thanks for your constant support!! In health… Sylvie Thibert (The Health Nut) 613-662-3834 thehealthnut@cogeco.ca

FOCUS ART ON LINE NEWS
WORKSHOP AT THE TAG GRAFFITI is writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface, often in a public place. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and it has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire.[ In modern times, paint (particularly spray paint) and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner's consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime.(Wikipedia)
WHEN IS GRAFFITI OK? When Erryn Blackadder, artist, Member of the Board of TAG, Apples and Art and Focus Art, offered a workshop at the TAG on July 25. Erryn taught participants the skills of melting shapes and lettering into colorful messages that can illustrate books, albums, even wall space. The popular art expression is a way of using modern materials to create eyecatching images very popular with the young and not so young.
EXHIBITION Tracy-Lynn Davies, member of Focus Art, invites members and the public to her exhibition at the Grind during the months of August and September.
AT THE TAG The TAG continues to support local artists. Members of Focus Art, Emily MacLeod , Tracy-Lynn Chisholm, Heather Smith, Margot Boucher and 16 other artists are hosting an exhibition, “Small Wonders” during the month of August. OBO Studio is the name of the group and is a gem in the visual art scene; it is owned and operated by local artists and contributes greatly to the visual art movement in Cornwall and area.. Visitors will not be disappointed. Vernissage is August 9 (2-4) See you at the TAG.
PLANNING FOR 2014-2015 August is planning time for Focus Art. For an entire day, August 1, the Board members meet at Nav-Can to review the activities of the past year and plan for the coming season. We have listened to your wants and needs. We want to meet your expectations and at the same time keep Focus Art progressive in the art world of today. Focus Art has an increased membership and is attracting younger members so something is going well. We must remain faithful to our mission and be alert to the needs of artists in 2014-2015. Send us your positive energy so that next year, our tenth, is the best year yet.

by Patrick Guindon I’ve talked a lot about the importance of making stuff to encourage creativity, but what about experiences? August is a great month for festivals, and any sort of festival will excite and inspire not only your child, but yourself as well. Take in as many free events as you can. The Martintown Mill showcases local artists every Sunday. TAG is waiting for your visit. The Grind features beautiful artwork and you can sit back with a coffee while your kid sketches the art on the walls. Check out the local murals that you might rush by on normal days. Visit the Cornwall Library to explore the books with a focus on art. Keep your sketchbook on hand all month! Artfest is a fabulous opportunity to not only SEE art, but to meet the folks who make it and live it every day. I never walk away from an Art event without some new idea or inspiration. The butterflies of excitement in my gut are always fluttering after these events.
This month, take in some local art. Drive up to Ottawa to visit the National Gallery (check their website for info
on free evenings and events!). Stop by the water to sketch something simple.
Patrick Guindon is a local Creative. He is a primary school teacher, and has made lots of creative things. You can follow him on Facebook (www.facebook.com/patrickguindonart) and on Twitter @123patrickg

July has shaped up to be a very busy month here in the city and the entire Seaway Valley! Most of you have had the privilege of enjoying the many activities offered in and around Cornwall on a regular basis such as Cornwall Motor Speedway, Arts in the Park and the Cornwall Public Library and then others have enjoyed the special events such as Lobstermania, Lift-Off and Ribfest to name a few. And then, there are plenty more events happening in the next few weeks before Summer wraps up such as the Glengarry Highland Games (this weekend), Williamstown Fair (Aug 8th weekend) and Cornwall Cornfest (Aug 16th weekend), just to name a few. Cornwall residents are so lucky to have such a wide variety of events happening right here in our own backyard, and some offered FREE of charge! I was able to attend Cornwall Seaway Lions Club Ribfest again this year and was very happy to be able to take in the festivities. While I do fully support the many great restaurants and businesses here in Cornwall, I also am happy that our city makes the effort of bringing festivals such as this one to our City as many people visit from out of the area to bring their dollars here into our community for the weekend. Some fantastic local entertainment was featured as well as the tribute bands and yes, I did indulge in some of the ribs. Here are a few photos taken from other various events this month - I have personally been having a wonderful Summer so far taking in all that the community has to offer as well as spending time with friends and my children. Take time for yourself and take time out to spend with friends if you can. All too often our lives get busy and we can't always make the time for friends and family - make it a challenge to see how many of your friends you can see for the rest of the Summer. It feels so good to reconnect with old friends and I am so blessed to be able to do that this year by having the pleasure of being invited to and attending so many get-togethers such as friends' houses, backyard parties, events and festivals, my "sister and brother-inlaw's" amazing Tiki Lounge, the beach, our local splash pad and more. In particular, I have tried to spend more time with my friend Jody who will be leaving for China in the next week or so to teach English. I would like to wish her every happiness on this new adventure! Lastly, my daughter has had to visit the dentist this month on a few occasions and I would like to thank the staff at Seaway Valley Dental. All of the staff, hygienists, assistants and Dr. Andi Bajraktari and Dr. George Limantzakis have been great with my six-year old and have made sure she is well taken care of and comfortable. The Seeker will be on holidays for the next two weeks but I do hope to see all of you "Out & About" during that time enjoying all that this great community has to offer!

with Craig Revelle A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands Where has the season gone? It is hard to believe we are sitting here at the end of July, with just over a month remaining in the regular season at our weekly Speedways. That is just five more events on the schedule for most tracks before either ending the season, or turning toward special events to conclude the season. All tracks end their points battles as of Labor Day Weekend and crown champions in each division.
This past weekend I visited Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night as they hosted the Seaway Sportsman Series/Frenchie’s Ford “Go Further” Series. 39 Sportsman were on hand with Shane Pecore coming out on top. Dylan Evoy had a great night with his second place finish while sophomore sensation Mike Maresca drove to a third place result with Joey Ladouceur and Corey Wheeler rounded out the top five. In the Modified division, it was Tom Conklin picking up his first career 358 Modified win. I had a chance to speak with Conklin after the race, and he was quick to praise Billy Dunn for working with his shock package, and he also noted a switch to a Bicknell Chassis to start the season as part of the reason for the consistency this year, and now a feature win. Brian McDonald finished second, while Dunn himself brought home a third place result. John Mulder had a terrific run in fourth place and Carey Terrance rounded out the top five. Jesse Hudson picked up the Mod Lite win and Randy Whitting captured the Bandit division main event.
Brockville Speedway was my destination of choice on Saturday night and we almost seen another first time winner. Jordan McCreadie had a great run, leading most of the event before Danny O’Brien came on strong to make a late race charge in lapped traffic to get past the familiar looking McCreadie #9 car. For anyone that has been around the sport for the past 10-15 years or longer, a win by Jordan McCreadie in a car very similar to the one that his father made famous would be a great story. O’Brien picked up his fourth feature win in a row at the BOS, sweeping the entire month of July as McCreadie, Kyle Dingwall, Stephane Lafrance and Ryan Arbuthnot rounded out the top five. Dylan Evoy won the Sportsman main event over Shane Pecore as they reversed positions from the previous night. Brian Comeau had a fantastic fun in third place ahead of Jessica Power and Jeremy LaSalle. Nick Gauvreau was the Street Stock feature winner, Tyson Slinger won the 4 cylinder Rookie main event and Brianna Ladouceur topped the field in the Rookie Sportsman class. The World of Outlaw Sprint Cars invaded Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night for their second every appearance at the ¼ mile bullring. Donny Schatz was once again the race winner as Kerry Madsen and Logan Schuchart rounded out the podium. Carey Terrance got the best of Chris Raabe in lapped traffic to get his third Cornwall win of 2014. Raabe got second with Chris Herbison, Kyle Dingwall and Stephane Lafrance in the top five. Shane Pecore got past Louis Jackson Jr. late in the race to secure the win in the Sportsman division. Corey Wheeler, Dillon Sallows and Mike Stacey completed the top five. This coming weekend I will follow the same routine with Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, Brockville Speedway on Saturday night, and a 100 lap Canadian Nationals event for the 358 Modifieds on Sunday night. As always, any comments or suggestions can be sent to crevelle@ripnet.com. from Mrs. B
Do you believe in angels? I don’t know if I believe that people get their wings like in the movie It’s A Wonderful Life but I do believe we have real live angels among us. They take care of us and watch over us. Usually we are unaware of them around us. Have you ever met someone — a complete stranger — and they seem so familiar? Someone who stopped to help you? Or perhaps it’s someone you know that seems to always be there for you? These people are your real, live angels. They could be a nurse who has taken care of you or a loved one, a special teacher that you or your children have had in school, or the crossing guard on the corner that always seems to be there — even on those very cold snowy days in winter. Ever hear the saying “If you don’t believe in angels, you haven’t met my grandma”?
Mrs. B’s Gifts & Home Decor angels! has No, the staff don’t have wings, but we do have angel figurines. Willow Tree
angels by a r t i s t S u s a n Lordi are originally h a n d carved by the artist and then the pieces are cast in resin and hand painted. The faces are left blank in order “to keep the interpretation of Willow Tree open”. When we first started selling these figures, I must admit, I was a little skeptical of the “look”. Very simplistic lines, soft washed colours AND I had a hard time to get past “no painted faces”, but after a short period of time I stopped noticing that this feature was “missing”. Often when I go to the display, I see faces! Each piece has a familiar look and I can identify many of them with someone I know or have known! Our customers often share their stories about what each Willow Tree figure means to them and we often laugh or cry with them. Emotions run high in the angel department! Our collection of Willow Tree angels can be seen on our website and we can ship these almost anywhere in Canada or you can pick them up at the store. Take a moment to check out the collection and I swear you will see a familiar face among them to.! Bee safe and bee happy.
