News & Politics Cornwall has a new Mayor Leslie O'Shaughnessy (6277 votes) defeated incumbent Mayor Bob Kilger (5396 votes). Jamie Gilcig finished last with 687 votes. Elected as Cornwall City Councillor's were: Bernadette Clement, Claude E. McIntosh, Elaine MacDonald, Justin Towndale, Maurice Dupelle, David Murphy, Carilyne Hebert, Brock Frost, Mark A MacDonald, and Andre Rivette.

TOP STORIES FROM THE ELECTION:

There is change in the air - In addition to former Mayor Bob Kilger not getting reelected, four incumbent Councillors did not get re-elected in the Cornwall Municipal Election of 2014. Denis Carr, Glen Grant, Syd Gardiner, and Gerald Samson were not reelected. 11th place does not mean you are out - Guy St-Jean finished in 11th place in the 2014 Cornwall Municipal Election. Finishing in 11th place however does not necessarily mean you're off Council. The last few candidates who finished in 11th place found seats on Council eventually including Gerry Samson and Mary Ann Hug. Youth rocked the vote in the 2014 Cornwall Municipal Election - With the election of Justin Towndale, Carilyne Hebert, and Brock Frost, City Council has just got a lot younger.

More women on Council City Council in Cornwall Ontario not only got younger last night, but now there are more women on City Council too. There is a 10% increase of women City Councillors with the election of Carilyne Hebert, who joins incumbents Bernadette Clement and Elaine MacDonald. The last time there were three women on Council was from 2008 to 2010 when Mary Ann Hug found a seat half way through the term.

Candidate who dropped out of the race did well - Stephanie White who withdrew from the election, but who's name still appeared on the ballot, finished ahead of six other Council Candidates (she finished with about 1900 votes). A bizarre and stunning result from someone who did not campaign, advertise, knock on doors, have signs up, or participate in the debates. New Mayor in South Stormont - Just like Cornwall, South Stormont has a new Mayor. Jim Bancroft finished with 2813 votes to incumbent Mayor Bryan McGillis' 2219 votes. Tammy Hart finished first in the race for Deputy Mayor. Hospice Pumpkin Fest 2014 raises $3,080 - The winning masterpiece was carved by Raoul Johnson, but the real winners were Hospice and those in the community who have had family members and friends use their services. Hospice Pumpkin Fest 2014 raised $3,080 at the Cornwall Square Shopping Mall.

Arts & Culture 54 photos chosen - 54 Photos have been selected for the 2014 Annual Juried Photography Exhibition. The jurors were Greg Peerenboom of the Standard Freeholder and Cheryl Hazelton from Cheryl Anne Photography. There were 72 entries and 54 pieces were chosen for display. The Awards Ceremony takes place Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 2:00 pm. The Fifth Annual Juried Photo Show runs from November 5 to November 28, 2014.

Sports & Lifestyle Moment of Silence at River Kings game for fallen soldiers There have been tributes and moments of silence all across Canada this week including at the Cornwall River Kings game on Saturday night. MP Guy Lauzon, MPP Jim McDonell, and Mayor Bob Kilger, joined veterans, and team owner Brock Frost at centre ice for a moment of silence to pay respect to the fallen soldiers. "With the meeting just underway, things changed instantly when the sound of gunshots rang through the Hall of Honour and our adjacent meeting room." Ontario Hockey Academy students meet Mario Lemieux - Some of Cornwall’s Ontario Hockey Academy teams are on the road this weekend including the OHA Boys Gold team and the OHA Boys White team. Both teams are playing in a tournament in New Hampshire. It was a super experience for the boys, including Stefan Quinz and Tyler Planetta pictured here, as they had the opportunity to hang out with NHL legend Mario Lemieux. Inducted immediately to the Hockey Hall of Fame after retirement, Mario Lemieux is ranked seventh all-time in NHL scoring with 690 goals and 1,033 assists. He is a two time Stanley Cup champion as a player and captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a one time Stanley Cup champion as owner of the team in 2009. Lemieux won numerous awards including the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and Conn Smythe Trophy, and he also lead Team Canada to gold in the 2002 Olympics. SLC Sharks Men’s Hockey Team take Gold at Invitational In dramatic fashion, the Sharks knocked off the defending Champions 3-1, winning the first tournament of the year. Matt Gregoire scored all three goals for the Sharks, including an empty net goal with just two seconds remaining. “This was a great start to the season” said co-head coach Sean Boulerice. Because the Sharks are hosting this year’s championship, they automatically qualify for the year-end tournament. But the team wants to ensure they earn their spot at the Challenge Cup. “We told the boys that this should be a special year culminating with hosting the provincial championships. But we don’t want to back into it. We want to put together a solid season and hopefully generate some good points along the way.” The next tournament for SLC-Cornwall is the Sheridan College Invitational on November 11th, in Oakville. Zac Tierney nets game winner The Nepean Raiders tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Cornwall Colts would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3. A goal by Peter Angelopoulos put Cornwall up 3-1 in the second period, but Nepean pulled to within one on Josh Zizek’s tally 3:27 into the third period. The Colts’ offense rang up 38 shots on the Raiders’ net. Cornwall was led by Zac Tierney, who tallied one goal and one assist. SHARYN'S EASY BAKED CHICKEN BREASTS

MORE CHICKEN RECIPES FOR YOU According to chef Michael Smith this morning on his cooking show, on average, each Canadian eats 90 lb. of chicken each year. I would agree with him. I love chicken cooked in any way, shape or form. A while back, my friend and fellow foodie, Stephen McMenamen gave me a recipe for a crockpot chicken. This chicken is seasoned with garlic, basil, soy sauce, ketchup and honey. Everything in one pot, ready for your supper. I think you will enjoy it too. Last week, I made one of my favourite easy oven baked chicken recipes and I am giving the recipe to you. Only 4 ingredients are needed to make a very tasty, tender and juicy baked chicken breast. It was one of the first recipes I made following my knee replacement surgery. I just baked some potatoes in the microwave and steamed some vegetables for a quick and easy and nutritious supper for Gary and I. Thanks Stephen for caring and sharing. (And thank you for the get well card!) Enjoy a great week!

STEPHEN'S HONEY GARLIC CROCKPOT CHICKEN INGREDIENTS: 1- 1/2 to 2 pounds of boneless skinless chicken thighs (allow 1 thigh per serving) 3 garlic cloves, smashed and chopped 1 tsp. dried rubbed basil 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup liquid honey (use Sharyn's Pantry local unpasteurized honey)

METHOD: -Use a small, 4 quart crockpot. If you use a 6 quart crockpot, the recipe will cook faster. -Place the chicken thighs in your crockpot. -In a small bowl, combine the chopped garlic, rubbed dried basil, soy sauce, ketchup and liquid honey. -Pour this evenly over the chicken thighs. -Place the lid on the crockpot and cook on LOW for 6 hours or if you wish, on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours. Stephen does it on LOW for the 6 hours. -Check for doneness in 3 hours if cooking on HIGH OR for 5 hours if cooking on LOW. -Serve the chicken alongside cooked basmati rice and steamed vegetables of your choice.

Cornwall Ontario -- It was a night of nostalgia and laughs for about 150 wrestling fans who saw a legend on stage Wednesday night at the Ramada Inn in Cornwall. WWE Hall of Famer and New York Times Best Selling Author Mick Foley was in town for some spoken word and comedy as a part of his Hardcore Legend Tour. His "Tales From Wrestling Past" brought fans closer to the wrestling world.

INGREDIENTS: 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts olive oil (you must use Sharyn's Pantry wonderful Sicilian extra virgin olive oil for 'the very best flavour ever' in cooking and in homemade salad dressings) Montreal style chicken spice (get this at Sharyn's Pantry) fresh rosemary, a few sprigs will do a little unpasteurized local liquid honey

METHOD: -Choose a suitable sized baking dish to hold the chicken breasts. Spray it with non-stick cooking spray. -Rinse off and pat dry the chicken breasts. Place them in the baking dish. -Season the chicken with a generous sprinkling of Montreal style chicken spice. -Chop the fresh rosemary very finely. Sprinkle this over the chicken. -Generously drizzle the olive oil over the chicken. Next, drizzle the chicken with a little liquid honey. -Place the chicken (uncovered) in a 350 degree F. oven for 30 minutes, then raise the oven temperature to 375 degrees F. and allow the chicken to brown for about 10 to 15 minutes. I baste the chicken with the pan juices once during baking time. ENJOY!!!

Mick Foley reminisced about famous matches, wrestlers, the origins of Mankind, and some very interesting road trips with Al Snow and Jake 'The Snake' Roberts. From the Undertaker and Hell in the Cell, to the night Bret 'the Hitman' Hart got screwed by Vince McMahon in Montreal, to his appearance in Cornwall Ontario for Monday Night Raw the very next day - each story had the audience roaring with laughter and excitement. It was an intimate show in Cornwall, a huge contrast to a few nights ago when Mick Foley was on Monday Night RAW, live from Kansas City. But whether he is on national television in a sold out arena, or at a spoken word event in a small town, the Hardcore Legend always brings his 'A' game and his best performance. The audience gave Foley a standing ovation at the end of the show. After the show Mick Foley met with and had his picture taken with wrestling fans.

Mick Foley has had many wrestling persona's over his career including Mankind, Dude Love, and Cactus Jack. Foley even brought out Mr. Socko much to the delight of the audience. He told many stories last night, including being in a movie with Riley Keough, who is Elvis Presley's grand daughter, and how she wore the red zip up hoodie he was wearing

Money, party politics and the municipal vote

The campaign leading up the the municipal election Monday in Cornwall was a bit of an experiment for me. It was my first foray into politics at any level and I wanted to see how well one could do without big money and without the backing of a major political party. I ran my campaign on a budget of $300, which basically covered the cost of cards so I at least had something to hand out at candidate events and during door-to-door campaigning. I decided at the outset to forego lawn signs newspaper advertising. I told supporters that if I had to buy a campaign with big money than I would rather not win at all. It turned out to be prophetic, and that is not an indictment of voters nor is it a criticism those elected to the new council -- some excellent choices were made. But it is, to some degree, a reflection of the system.

What was eye-opening, and somewhat disheartening for me, were that a number of councillors got elected not necessarily because they were the most sincere or had the best platforms, but because they had vast sums of money to spend and/or had the backing of a major provincial political party.

These two factors -- big money and party politics -- create an incredibly uneven playing field for first-time candidates who may have had great ideas and a sincere desire to improve our city but didn't have thousands of dollars nor the backing of a major political party. This in no way would have affected my showing in the election (I finished way too low in the polls), nor does not necessarily mean the end result would have changed with a level playing field. It is quite possible the 10 council members elected are the people the voting public wanted all along.

But unless provincial politics and big money is taken out the system, we will never know if we are truly seeing the real people's choices every four years when the election results roll in.

- I heard throughout the campaign that voters wanted change and the results show that they indeed got their wish, especially at the top with the election of mayor-elect Leslie O'Shaughnessy. - One of my favourite new candidates received a huge vote of confidence from the electorate. Carilyne Hebert is a bright, vibrant bundle of energy and should serve the new council well. - Another one of my favourite candidates, Mike O'Neill, did not make the cut despite running an outstanding campaign for a rookie. He is a man who had all the ingredients needed for this council to transition the disastrous past four years.

He most recently worked for The/Le Journal, where he covered Cornwall City Hall extensively. Prior to that he spent more than 10 years at the Standard-Freeholder in Cornwall as reporter, wire editor and assistant city editor.

One of the most important things you can do to add value to your home is to ensure you have a dry basement and solid foundation. Buyers shy away from homes with moisture issues so before listing your home for sale, take the time to inspect and repair any cracks you find. Concrete and block foundations usually have at least a few cracks. The trick is recognizing which are insignificant and which are serious.

If you find small cracks (less than 1/16-inch wide), you could paint over them with a concrete waterproofing paint and then check periodically to see whether the paint has cracked, which means the gap is opening up under pressure and requires further attention.

OHA Trick or Treat for Agape on November 3rd FRONT PAGE STORy Cornwall Ontario — Hockey players wearing the colours maroon, gold, and white will be knocking door to door canvasing several neighbourhoods on Monday November 3rd.

Students from the Ontario Hockey Academy, including Kennedy Dirk and Robyn Foley pictured above, will be collecting food for the Agape Food Bank this Halloween season for a fourth year in a row. This year the canvassing will take place after Halloween due to hockey schedules.

Teams will be visiting several different neighbourhoods including Riverdale, center-town, around Home Depot, Sunrise Acres, and around Vincent Massey.

“It’s for a good cause, and it is the least we can do,” says Kennedy Dirk who is a member of the Social Committee at the Ontario Hockey Academy.

Student Athletes engaged in this food collecting activity will have the opportunity to volunteer and learn more about civic responsibility. The Agape Centre relies 100% on the donations of time, food, money, clothing, and other household items from the community to help families that access the services.

“The Agape Centre plays such an important role in providing support in the Cornwall community. We are truly happy that we can play a role in ensuring the center is able to continue to meet our city’s needs”, says Principal Craig Thanasse. The Ontario Hockey Academy is pleased to go door to door this Halloween season to collect food for such an important charity in our community.

Puddles and other signs of moisture in the basement indicate poor drainage around the perimeter foundation. Be sure that the evesthroughs aren’t plugged, and that soil slopes away from the foundation at the rate of 6 inches for every 10 horizontal feet. Does your driveway slope towards the house? Do you have proper window wells? One thing we know for sure is that water always follows the path of least resistance! Recurring water issues may require that you call in a professional to excavate the perimeter of the house and install a proper drainage system to alleviate the water penetration. Cracks can be sealed at the same time and the foundation retarred. There are many local foundation specialists in our area who are able to properly determine the source of the water entry and give you the best solution to rectify the problem.

TIP OF THE WEEK As Mike Holmes Advises “When it comes to basement cracks, don’t be an ostrich and stick your head in the ground. If you’ve got a foundation crack, check it out. Call in a structural engineer or foundation specialist for an opinion.” It will be more than worth it in the long run!

Different types of cracks indicate different problems and they may give clues as to what the cause might be. The most common foundation cracks are caused by concrete shrinkage. Another reason could be that your home is settling into the soil. This could happen if the house’s footings weren’t adequate or the soil was saturated with water at the time of the pour.

Should you notice that the foundation is flaking or crumbling, take a screwdriver and see if the concrete can be penetrated easily. It should be hard and resist your probing.

Finding a horizontal crack however, could indicate that your wall’s structural integrity has been undermined. Horizontal cracking higher up on the wall is usually from frost damage and the freeze-thaw cycle or it could be that water from your downspouts or sump pump have saturated the ground which then freezes and exerts pressure on the basement wall. It might be caused by improper backfill around your foundation.

There are other ways to tell if your house foundation is moving or sinking. For instance, a door begins to jam or fails to close; cracks appear in walls, over doorways or windows or where walls meet ceilings; cracks open up in ceramic tile over a concrete floor. Windows that fail to budge or to close completely could also be a sign of foundation problems.

Lots of Rain, some spots of sunshine and some hail thrown in for good measure. Whatever the weather... make sure to get out and about to enjoy all of the rainbowic colours before they are all GONE!!! Don't forget to bring a friend or two along for the outing.

Last Friday afternoon I had lots of fun and the pure joy of helping with decorating a side and backyard for Halloween with a couple of my good friends, K a r e n Richardson and Vicki Carter of ~Paying It Forward & Doing Good Deeds~. It was a warm and sunny afternoon to be outside decorating and sharing some good times and tunes with two sweet friends of mine. Karen and her husband, Bob put on an "Adult Party" for her family and friends each year. So, I volunteered to help her and Vickie decorate for the upcoming event that was held last Saturday night.

snacks, along with drinking some yummy tasting "homemade punch" that had quite the PUNCH to it. John dressed up like a Pharoah and I was his Lady Pirate for the evening. I really loved everyone's costumes, especially the other two pirates that showed up to join in with all of this Halloween FUN!!! Thank you kindly Bob & Karen for inviting John and I to your home and making us feel so welcomed and loved. I am also looking forward to going to two other Halloween parties... One is tonight at another friend's home, Lise Cooper and her husband, and the other is going to be held at the Glengarrian Pub tomorrow evening. Now, my BIG Challenge is...What To Wear Tonight & What To Wear Tomorrow Night??? I love these kinds of challenges!!! Don't you???
