Ethics and Politics There are unethical people everywhere in this world. People who lie, cheat and steal from the hardworking individuals they are surrounded with.
The Seeker still ranked Cornwall’s #1 Media website
Stealing can take many forms. It can be as blatant as stealing things or money, or it can also come in more subtle forms. Extortion, for example. Extortion is defined as the illegal use of one's official position or powers to obtain property, funds, or patronage. In the web world, it is an unfortunate common practice. This week alone, in three instances, I had to work with new clients who had issues with their previous web person hijacking their website, website content or domain name. Is that extortion? Yes. Is it legal? Totally. As an ethical person, it angers me greatly to see the scumbags of the earth feed on easy preys. Too many take kindness for weakness and the law is oftentimes not on the right side. For example, the line is very blurred in regards to who owns a website or a domain: in theory, the administrative contact listed on your domain registration is the only person who can release the said domain, not the person listed as the owner. This leads to extortion practices that are less than classy. A domain costs about $15. I've seen webmasters ask for up to $300 to release a domain name, name of which a client is supposedly the formal owner. Could the client take this to court? Certainly. But not without dishing out an enormous amount of money. Also, the burden would be on him to prove that he owns the domain. Without a proper written agreement, that may be difficult. He also would have to prove malicious intent, which is always hard to do. How do you quantify damages? You need concrete proof. And in the virtual word, nothing is concrete. Sounds like politics? It is. Everyday, everywhere in the world, politicians lie, cheat and steal from the outstanding citizens in their communities. This year is an election year in Cornwall. I urge you to do your homework. Don't take anybody's word for an answer; go deeper, seek the truth, find your own answers. Make informed decisions. But most of all, go vote! Our future depends on voters.

Cornwall’s waste diversion rate rises 12.7% The City of Cornwall has experienced an increase in its waste diversion rate as residents continue to make use of the expanded recycling and leaf and yard waste programs. The year 2013 was the first full year following a number of significant enhancements to the waste and recycling programs. These included a move to a singlestream weekly recycling collection and the delivery of larger blue boxes to all single family homes, the introduction of a multi-residential recycling program and the expansion of the curbside leaf and yard waste collection program. “These changes are having the positive effect that we anticipated,” said Nicole Robertson, Solid Waste Supervisor. “By diverting more waste, we are helping the environment and helping to extend the life of the City Landfill.” As of the end of 2013, the City’s overall diversion rate stood at 41.8 %, up from 29.1 % in 2011. The changes are included in the Solid Waste Management Master Plan, which was approved in principle by Council in 2011. The Plan contains a series of initiatives to increase the diversion rate over a 5-year period.

Letters & Opinions Mark A. MacDonald says Council has wasted time and money - Wrongful dismissals, huge payoffs, criminal charges and resignations, are just some of the issues that have plagued this Council. They have wasted their time and our money. Now their own Administration is not even listening to them and Council is talking about raising taxes, again! It’s no wonder that the public has lost confidence with this Council. The construction of the chemical storage tanks, the sale of the old General Hospital and any talk about demolishing historical buildings must be delayed so the public can have a say at the ballot box. We can’t trust this Council to negotiate for us, they got us in to this mess in the first place. -Mark A. MacDonald.

Misconceptions About Winter Grooming Needs
Petcetera with Susan Dalmer
Old Man Winter has settled in I cannot help to stress t h e importance of continued grooming of pet’s during these winter months as well as any other time of year. A pet’s coat (dog or cat) of any length needs to be clean, brushed and free of mats in order to insulate your pet from the cold weather. I have used the analogy for instance in comparison of ungroomed pet hair to Pink Insulation for example; which homebuilders use if it became compressed and contaminated with dirt the pink
Insulation would not be effective by keeping a home warm when explaining to clients.
Extended day light plays havoc with your pet’s body’s internal instinctual system causing on going shedding. Also, exposure to dry heated homes causes’ dry flaking and itchy skin while regular grooming helps prevent excessive dander and bathing remedies the buildup of dirt and oils. A groomed fur coat keeps pets warm and comfortable once shedding hair is removed which can become impacted causing painful matting or hair like tumble-weeds gathering on your floors. Pet parents need to understand just because winter is here and their pet is

indoors most of the time, does not mean the pet does not require regular grooming. In fact there are important aspects to consider such as: cleaning of ears, cleaning away eye tearing buildup, nail trims, proper brushing to prevent matting and the vital need to trim hair around the paws. Painful ice balls can build up on the hair left to grow from the pads of the pet’s feet. Also, road salt on the paws can burn and cause painful sore dry cracking pads. Another vital area for grooming maintenance is under the tail. Peter Warder DVM stated, “A fecal pack can cause skin infections around the rectum and in extreme cases prevent your pet from making a bowel movement. Also, hair left to grow between the pads of a pet’s foot can trap moisture which causes sores and

infections.” As a groomer I had found matted hair as hard as stone between the pads of the pet’s foot which I discovered a weeping sore.
Regardless if you choose to have a professional groomer or yourself to maintain pet’s comfort and hygiene, regular grooming is necessary to ensure your pet’s wellbeing during all seasons. This column is for you the pet owner and you are welcome to contact me with your questions or concerns pertaining to pet grooming care.

You broke up six months ago but you’re still sleeping with him and sneaking around thinking things are starting to get better? Well, sorry to burst your colourful bubble full of glitter and unicorn dust but you’re wasting your time. You’ve successfully managed to convince yourself that somewhere in his heart he still loves you and can’t live without you. Perhaps it’s true, maybe a section of his heart will always have your name on it but if he really couldn’t live without you then he would commit to you, again. If he’s not committing to you, and ONLY you, then stop making excuses for him and stop giving him what he wants. You see, he’s the real winner in this situation. He’s getting a piece whenever he wants, he knows you’d do anything for him, but he doesn’t have to call you his girlfriend. He can live the life of a single man while reaping the benefits of someone who actually puts in the time and effort. And whyyy is he doing this? It’s simple: You’re LETTING him!
By allowing him to come over anytime he wants and get his fill, you’re telling him that it’s okay to treat you this way. Ever notice how he doesn’t send you sweet Good Morning texts but rather keeps his messages for late evening (and sometimes midnight or later)? He’s doing it because he can, and don’t think he’s not doing it with other girls too. I get that you love him, you’d rather have him around half the time as a “friend” than not at all. Maybe he helps you with housework sometimes or gives you a ride when your car is in the shop, so you’re all like… Oh my God, this is going somewhere finally! Then you don’t hear from him for a week. Well, he clearly doesn’t love you because when you love someone you don’t wanna go a day without talking to them. You want to be with them as much as possible, and you certainly don’t want to take advantage of their vulnerabilities. It’s time to realize that your relationship took a sour turn for the worst and that’s why you broke up. You need to know that unless we’re talking about Warheads or Sour Patch Kids…. sour means BAD and you have to remember that there’s a reason why he’s your ex. By always going back to him, you’re not allowing other guys the opportunity to get to know you. Sure, you go on a few dates here and there but your mind always wanders back to him. You’re hindering yourself every single time you answer his call or text message and you will never meet “Mr. Right” if you don’t completely cut “Mr. Wrong” out of your life. You need to start believing that you’re worth more than a booty call and a half-ass cuddle. If you want to be wooed, if you want flowers, if you want LOVE, then you need to know that you are worthy of it. Sounds super cliché but it’s true. Let your ex go, remember the good times, but stop relying on him for those butterflies. If you meant that much to him he would commit so stop making excuses for him and cut him out cold-turkey today…. or answer his call and feel like shit for the next three days. The choice is yours, make the right one! Over all my exes and couldn’t be happier, The Love Hawk Shannon loves love. She has a passion for people and understanding the little things that make everyone unique and similar, all at the same time. She has degrees in Communication Studies, Psychology, and Broadcast Journalism but it’s the school of life that taught Shannon most of what she knows about love and relationships. Letter to the Editor Should Cornwall City Councillors make a living wage? Dear Readers,
In an editorial published last week, I argued that City Council pay raises should be based on the CPI. I will now play devil’s advocate and debate the merits of City Councillors earning a “living wage”.
The annual salary of a Cornwall Ontario City Councillor is about $14,500, which is well below the poverty line. In comparison, a full time minimum wage worker in Ontario is making about $21,000 annually, which is still below the poverty line.
Should elected City Councillors make a living wage? I think the visceral reaction of many people would be a resounding no! Especially if the public is unsatisfied with the performance of their current City Council, or the perception is those who are on City Council are already generally well off. However when the salary of a politician is not at a living wage it can deter some segments of society from running for political office. This could be detrimental to the very nature of our democracy which is suppose to allow the active participation of all people, as citizens, in politics and civic life. All people means everyone, not just those who are privileged or well off.
Of course politicians should not be in it for the money, however in a true democracy the person who utilizes a food bank or works a minimum wage job should have the same real opportunity to run for office as a business owner, professional, or retired person with a pension. A living wage for City Council would protect this key democratic principal. What are your thoughts on City Councillors earning a “living wage”? Resolve: City Councillors should earn a living wage. Will you take the affirmative or the negative in this debate?
Thank you for reading. -Jason Setnyk, Cornwall Ontario

FROM MY P ANTRY
AN EVEN BETTER BLUEBERRY MUFFIN
over the past six weeks, I have had two minor surgeries, just enough to slow me down a bit. to keep my sanity, I have been baking a little to pass the time. this last recipe I tried, for yet another blueberry muffin. they were delicious with a very tasty crumble topping. We enjoyed them reheated in the microwave and spread honey butter over the warm, tender muffins. the recipe makes about 24 large muffins. I baked them before my knee surgery and they lasted us for 2 weeks, by keeping them cold. they certainly would freeze well with no problem. I hope you try them. this recipe is my new favourite blueberry muffin recipe.
NEWS FROM www.theseeker.ca Slyde celebrates five years of music with a Cornwall show Article and Photos by Jason Setnyk
Slyde (photo left) is a Toronto based rockband, that has Cornwall Ontario roots. Lead singer and guitarist Nathan Da Silva who is from the area spoke with the Seeker about the band celebrating its five year anniversary this past weekend.
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled to room temperature 2 cups buttermilk, shake the litre of buttermilk to mix it thoroughly before you pour it 2 tsp. grated lemon zest 2 extra large eggs 3- 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour 1- 1/2 cups white sugar 4- 1/2 rounded tsp. baking powder 1 level tsp. baking soda 1 level tsp. Kosher salt 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 2 cups fresh blueberries (If you have frozen blueberries, place them in a colander or sieve and run hot tap water over them to thaw them. Then pat them dry in some paper towels.)
THE MUFFINS:
“Even though we’ve been a band for five years, we feel like we’re just getting started. After playing 150+ shows and releasing 4 EPs, we still have a lot of ground to cover in the big picture, and we have some big plans for 2014-2015″, says Da Silva. He and the band traveled from Toronto to Cornwall and faced winter stormy weather on the highway just to play the 5th Anniversary gig on Saturday night. It was well worth the trip, as the band played to a full house at La Maison Tavern. “It’s always a great time at La Maison for Slyde. We have some dedicated fans and hometown friends who know how to have a good time in Cornwall, so it’s always a pleasure for us to come back and rock”, explains Da Silva. Also playing the concert was Coldrift. (photo top left) Their high energy set pumped up the crowd Saturday night at La Maison, much the same way their high energy excited music fans at Lift-Off 2013.
1/4 cup cold butter cut into 1/4 inch cubes 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp Kosher salt
THE STRUESEL TOPPING:
METHOD: -Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2- 12 cup regular sized muffin tins with 24 muffin paper liners. Set aside. -Melt the 1/2 cup of butter and allow it to come to room temperature. -In a bowl, combine the shaken buttermilk, eggs and lemon zest. Stir in the cooled melted butter. Mix well to combine. -In another bowl, sift together the flour, white sugar, baking powder and baking soda , salt and ground nutmeg. -Add the wet ingredients into the bowl of sifted dry ingredients. Stir only to combine. -Lastly, stir in the blueberries. Don't overmix of your muffins will be tough! -Using a scoop for ease and same-sized muffins, drop the muffin batter from the scoop into the paper lined muffin tins. The scoop will ensure a nicely rounded muffin top. -Prepare the streusel topping. Combine the flour, brown sugar, salt and cinnamon. Using a pastry blender or your fingers, cut or rub in the cold cubes of butter. You want the topping to look crumbley and the butter to be in very small pieces. -Spoon a generous tablespoonful of the topping over each muffin in the tins. -Bake the muffins in the pre-heated 375 degree oven for about 20 to 25 minutes. Check after about 19 minutes. In my oven, they were perfectly baked in 24 minutes. Test with a cake tester, when inserted in the centre of the muffin and it comes out clean, with no batter or crumbs, the muffins are baked. -I placed my oven rack to second from the bottom. Just combine equal amounts of liquid honey and room temperature butter until nice and creamy. This will keep for a week or so nicely. When needed, split open a nice warm muffin and spread this over the muffin. eNJoy!
Opening the show was another band with Cornwall area roots, the popular rock band Elly May (photo bottom left) once again hit the infamous local stage, rocking out crowd pleasing melodies.

Seeing family and friends really reinforced my decision to return home. I missed them. They are such an integral part of my life, and apparently it was pretty evident that I was missing my hometown and the people in it. I appreciate the beautiful view of a vibrant neighbourhood and the reduced traffic. There are definite advantages to living in a smaller city for instance, I can make it from one part of the city to the next in roughly 10-15 minutes, not so much in a bigger city. I look forward to reconnecting with more friends and getting to know this town again. And so the dual city life begins again. At this time, I am stranded in town due to inclement weather, which let’s face it, has been the case for so long. The thought of 6 more weeks of winter is daunting, but hey we’re Canadian. Moving back and transitioning into a new role is something I am enjoying. I have to get used to packing for anything and often going without something I forgot. Between the two places and the packed boxes, it can be a little dicey at times, but the end results are worth it. Being back in Cornwall after almost 2 years living in Kingston, I am aware of the changes that have occurred in our fair city. New bridge is only one of the more startling differences. Sitting in the passenger seat I was able to look around and see the developments and updates, some new businesses, and sadly the end of a few. Everywhere I went I was greeted by friendly faces. It's good to be home! February is here and as the snow covers the ground yet again and we brace for more inclement weather, remember Spring is around the corner. Go ahead and enjoy the fun outdoor activities, or curl up by a fireplace. Olympics are coming soon...Go Canada Go!

I am slowly making my way back to Cornwall. Last Friday, I made the countless trips to my car filling it with boxes and then hit the road Cornwall bound. I picked up my key to my new place and as I walked around my new home, I could envision where everything will go and making those final decisions of what stays and what goes. I brought mainly kitchen supplies as I know I can fit them in cupboards. Seasonal clothes have also started to populate my closets, after a serious purging, I pared it down to what I actually wear or hope to wear within the year. A few family members and friends stopped by to see it, and as we sat on the only furniture I have, the comfy stools my parents gave me that match my kitchen island perfectly. I could picture a day in the near future where I could actually show them I can cook, and catch up on all I missed.
FROG AND TOAD
KRISCROSSROADS by Kris Ward
Cornwall Part Deux
It was a relatively cold that day when the three of us set out from the barn, three teenaged girls, each on a horse. I was riding my friend’s horse Prince. My friend was on Cheyenne, and my sister on Scout. It was a bright snowy January day and not extremely cold. We started out along a forest trail after having crossed the dirt road between the barn and our friend’s house. A trail led us down the hill to the valley through a forest of hemlocks and then cedar trees. We came to the edge of the river which was about 5 meters across and not too deep. There was an open section of fast water with rocks and pebbles on the bottom. The rest of the river was frozen over. It must have been a relatively mild day since we never went out when it was icy as this would mean the horses could slip and fall, causing injury to themselves or us. We let the horses have a loose rein to pick their way across the rocky river bed themselves. Scout and Cheyenne did this carefully and without incident. Prince started out across and hesitated half way along. The water was about 2 feet deep. At this point let me tell you that I was a horse lover, and still am, but was somewhat inexperienced. I was not exactly a horse whisperer! Prince being given loose reins, put his head down, and I thought he wanted a drink. He started pawing at the water and sniffing and snorting with his nose. To my dismay, and before I could pull up his head, I could feel his knees sink down and he suddenly rolled onto his back to have a little refreshing dip. I was tossed into the water. Of course no harm was done. Prince did a few rolls looking gleeful and ready to go again. I had to drag myself to the shore, winter coat, boots, gloves and hat soaking wet. What a shock to the body! But we were close to home, and after a brief discussion, we took the horses back to the barn and I was soon at home in dry clothes.

Gerald Samson running for second term on City Council 5 QUESTIONS ...
What was Councils biggest challenge?
Prior to my arrival it was personal issues, which have been ironed out. We had to hire a top investigator. But the biggest challenge is rumours, personal problems, and lawsuits. A great deal of money was spent on that.
Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk
Gerald E. Samson who finished 11th place in the last municipal election, and became a member of City Council when Leslie O Shaughnessy resigned, is seeking re-election in 2014.
We need to treat every employee fairly, making them feel important and a part of the team. We need to listen to experienced City employees, because they are the people who know their jobs. For example if they are telling us we are putting too much salt out on the roads, we should listen on them.
Samson sits on the following committees: Cornwall & Area Housing Corporation, Cornwall Community Woodhouse Museum, Municipal Tax Registration, Parking Committee, and the Service Manager Joint Liaison Committee.
What lessons did you learn during your first stay on council?
Why are you running for re-election?
I am passionate about my hometown. I really enjoy helping the people out. I am in favour of bringing a University here. A casino in Cornwall that pays taxes could help fund a University. In turn a University can help maintain and grow our population.
I support reducing taxes, and one way to do that is to avoid consultant fees. We have an educated staff that can do the job consultants do. $85,000 in consultant fees is a waste of money for the Recreation Department, when the Recreation Director could have done that work. I served 21 years on the school board, and I am very experienced with the budget process.
What was Councils biggest accomplishment?
Cornwall is on the move! With the new bridge, the realignment is set to bring people down town. However the east end needs to be developed. Montreal Road needs to be developed further, to make it more friendly and business friendly. I am optimistic with the influx of new shopping centres coming in, giving people more variety to shop locally instead of in the US. This creates jobs.
We are going to need to continue developing our industrial park, and service them. Economic Development is doing a fantastic job, and Cornwall Tourism is too.
It is very political, many areas want different allocations of goods. Municipalities take care of the poorer people, people in need. A Municipality is measured on how it takes care of its needy.
What do you think are going to be the biggest issue(s) in the 2014 election?
We are working on the water tanks issue. Our waterfront is sacred, people have a right to enjoy it. With no more Domtar or Courtaulds, we have an opportunity to revitalize it. Government should not be allowed to put tanks on river, tanks that may leak. The tanks would be better suited in an industrial park and nowhere near a river. We need to keep developing the waterfront and keep it clear. Green space is important, more recreation, more people in the parks, skateboard parks, and so on.
The biggest issue though is downloading from the province. I see that sitting on the Housing Committee. We have an older population. We’re trying to keep taxes low, but the province keeps downloading services. We’ll have to watch every dollar carefully. By avoiding consultant fees, we’ll have more money for services.
In conclusion, I support creating obs, hospital funding, bringing in a University, and keeping taxes low. Its an exciting time to be here. With twenty-one years on the school board, twenty years as a police officer, and two and a half years on Council. That is the experience I bring to the table.
A TASTE OF HOME Article and photos by John lucio No offence to all you wonderful Canadians out here, and I mean that whole-heartedly (Canadians are a truly
wonderful people!), but sometimes I sure do miss Texas. I’ll tell you what. Especially in the winter! Not just for the warmer climate, the sunshine, all the ruckus and loudmouth bravado with their know-it-all brashness, but especially for the spicy barbecue. Mmmmnnnnnnn Especially when remembering the experience of the smoky flavor and the melting texture of BBQ meat in my mouth. Mmm! Goodness gracious, how one can long for something so far away. So distant in so many ways. Here, we are worlds apart from all that. Well, there is Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse, NY (http://dinosaurbarbque.com). And it is awesome. Just perfect. But that’s a three and a half to four hour drive. Real, exceptional Southern BBQ is hard to come by out here in the North Country, in either Massena or Cornwall. So when great friend, Bob Sloan and his wife, Ayda, invited my wife and I to dinner at a BBQ Restaurant, I wasn‘t expecting to eat real Southern
BBQ, to be honest with you. It’s like Mexican food--when you’re picking up Taco Bell and bringing it home to your children as "real Mexican food", that’s when you know you’ve learned to adapt and assimilate into the culture. Woo Hoo…Taco Bell. Riva Riva! Ándale Niños! Yeah right. Woo Hoo. I can be a sport about it. Yee Haw! See? Hell yeah, I’m up for BBQ. Let’s go, Bob! I was Not really expecting to eat what I consider real BBQ. Bob was certain that it was. Me?--not so much. Crazy cold weather out. Brrrrgggg! Bob drove. Nice SUV--even the seats heated up. That was good, because it took about an hour to get there. Oh my goodness…all this smoking BBQ Meat smelled so dang good! We ordered the Good Luck Platter, which consisted of every meat item they sell on one platter: 1 Armadillo egg, 2 wings, 1 chicken leg, 2 St. Louis ribs, 1 beef rib, brisket, pulled pork, and 1 of their signature sausages. We also got additional plates of brisket of pulled pork. And as for the taste…Here’s where I let out a long Halleluya! Seriously, there are no complaints. None. Zero! This is heaven here on earth. If I may borrow a quote from one of my favorite shows, Seinfeld, I’d sum up their BBQ like this: “It is real and it is spectacular.” Or, in a more southern tone, ‘It is the real McCoy.’ The food AND the service met and exceeded my every expectation, at par with Texas standards of excellence. They didn’t have to tell me--I can tell that the owner and waiter had spent a lot of time in Texas. Enough to know and bring back the very essence of Southern barbecue right here to Ontario. The service was as impeccable as one would get in Texas, very professional, very amicable, very prompt, and in the paradox of being humble while proud.

Hi there to all of you Beautiful People here in Cornwall this week. I hope you are enjoying the lovely sunshine that has been peeking through the gloominess of these past Winter weeks. The days are getting longer and I've heard that the "Weather Groundhog," tells us that Spring will be here in six, short weeks...YAAAAAAY!!! This week I would love to talk about ME Being ME, and YOU Being YOU!! YOU are the ONLY one who can make yourself happy, sad, depressed, excited or any emotion. You are the master at the controls, You are the one in control and if you aren't, then make it so. Time flies, but you're the pilot. Life is way too short to be worried about what others may say or do to you. If you aren't liking what is happening in your Life...then CHANGE IT!!! There are three(3) C's in Life...CHOICE, CHANCE & CHANGE. YOU must make the CHOICE, to take the CHANCE, if YOU want anything in Life to CHANGE!!! It's Your Life... LIVE it to the FULLEST, LOVE like you've never loved before & LAUGH every single day. As I get older, and I am... over a half a century old, I find myself being more ME, than ever before. I have blossomed from a little shy violet, into this outspoken, confident red rose. (thorns included.) Age gives one experiences that help one along their Life's Journey. Each day that passes by, I get this wonderful feeling inside, that Life has so much to offer me. All I have to do is go after whatever it is that I want or need in this life. I want to be the one at the end of my days, to say, "I Did It!" instead of saying, "I should have, or could have, or would have, but..." No BUTS for this lady. I have come a long way from being the shy, teenage girl, who couldn't stand in front of a class or talk to anyone that I didn't know. Now, Look at ME...Here I am writing in a local paper, the "~Seeker~," I've modeled in many fashion shows over the past 3 years for the ~Welcome Wagon~. I am happily a part of ~Cornwall's Business Network's~(CBN) board members. I can now go in and around town meeting and greeting new and old acquaintances and friends who I have come to know in the past 5 years, since moving to Cornwall. Cornwall has given me the life I had always wanted. Thank you so very much to the city of Cornwall and it's wonderful citizens. I came across this perfect poem for todays column, and wanted to share it with you all.
BE YOURSELF... The world would like to change YOU, There are pressures all around. You must decide just who YOU are, Then firmly hold your ground. YOU have an image of yourself, An ideal sense of YOU; And to this vision you must always Struggle to be true.

YOU know what YOU are good at, And YOU know where talents lie; But if you're ruled by others Your "Uniqueness" could pass by. Remember, there is much to learn; But all new things aren't good. Wisdom lies in what we learned, And what we have withstood. So, be YOUrself and don't allow The world to take control. Preserving "YOUR IDENTITY", Is Life's Most Precious Goal. author unknown
Tip of the week: BE YOUrself this week. For example: Go out to lunch or supper with an old or new friend. Go to the movies with your significant other or try Bowling or a game of Bingo or two for something new to do. Why not go out and buy something frivolous for yourself??? Something that makes YOU SMILE!!! Do something just for YOU this week because YOU Deserve to. ReMeMBeR the three(3) C's in lIfe...ChoICe, ChANCe & ChANge. Until next time, Please Pass on Your SMILES... They Could and Will Change Someone's Life, Today. Perhaps, even your own.

Realty Check with
What am I signing? – The Buyer Representation Agreement If you are using a real estate representative to buy a property then you will more than likely see one of these baby’s. The BRA is used to establish how your agent will represent you and once signed the agent has full duty and responsibility to you during the transaction. Let’s have a look at some of the more important parts of this agreement. COMMENCEMENT DATE & EXPIRY There is always a specific time line that the agreement will follow. This should be established prior to beginning to view properties but is not always the case. This is completely up to the discretion of the buyer and the agent. You can work together for one month or one year. This section goes on to set out which type of property this particular agent will help you find and in what area. Some agents are more qualified in certain areas then others so you may not want to use the same agent that is helping you find a home as you would to buy commercial property. You also may not want to use an agent specializing in the Cornwall market to buy in Toronto. COMMISSION As a buyer you are generally not responsible to pay commission but there are exceptions at times depending on what you have arranged with your agent. I will give two examples of when you might be responsible as a buyer to pay commission: 1) The agent is representing you with a “for sale by owner” transaction. Sometimes the agent is able to negotiate the seller to pay the commission but if the seller does not agree then the buyer could be on the hook. 2) The listing brokerage is not paying out an adequate commission. Generally, as a hard working real estate professional, we receive 2.5% as commission on the buyer’s side. Sometimes more and sometimes less. If the listing agent is not paying out the agents full fee then the buyer could be held accountable to come up with the balance. As I said 90%of the time as a buyer you will not be responsible for commission but it is important to establish with your agent what you “might” have to pay on closing.
an offer on a property that is listed with your agents office. Ask your agent about multiple representation. REFERRAL OF PROPERTIES Once you sign you are agreeing to work exclusively with your agent. If you see a property that interests you, you are expected to act in good faith and contact your Realtor for details and to set up viewings. Remember you chose this agent for a reason so don’t go calling other realtors for info. USE AND DISTRIBUTION OF INFORMATION During the transaction you will be working with mortgage brokers, home inspectors, other contractors and possibly many others to ensure your deal goes through. This section simply states that we have your permission to represent you to these third parties and provide information or documentation that may be needed. I’ve stated before that as a buyer you should interview agents to represent you just as you would interview agents to list your home. Go through this agreement with your agent so you understand exactly what is expected. Problems arise when confusion sets in so by being prepared you will have the information you need for a successful purchase. Best,
REPRESENTATION By signing this agreement you verify that your agent has informed you about multiple representation (see my last article) and you understand that you could be put in a multiple representation situation during the length on this agreement. I won’t dive in too far to this again but the two ways to enter multiple representation would be either if you decide to put an offer on a listing that your agent has or if you put

spoke with the chef, as well. And you can really tell that he--and his crew--takes great pride in the food they cook and the generous plates they prepare. Pride…you know, that one ingredient that makes all the difference in the world. Matter-a-fact, they use an enormous Southern Pride smoker which can hold and cook up to 2,000 lbs of meat! Their kitchen is very clean, organized, and the crew is very professional. Thorough. I know real BBQ. Born & Bred Texan, I grew up on all that. I have very fond memories of my carnivorous childhood, helping my father grill some BBQ in the backyard, or running down to a Bill Miller Bar-B-Q nearby (http://billmillerbbq.com) when he didn’t feel like cooking any, to pickup an order for the whole family. The kind of meal that inspires laughter and conviviality, the ruckus--yeah, yeah, you know!--that Texas bravado. Lawdy Lawdy…sitting at the table, with so much meat it looks like a meal the Flintstones would eat--an enormous plate of brontosaurus ribs--talking loud and licking our fingers, without a worry in the world. To experience all that and feel right at home like that, it’s well worth the hour drive there to D&S Southern Comfort BBQ, in Carlsbad Springs, Ontario. d&S Southern Comfort BBQ 6501 Russell Rd., Carlsbad Springs, ontario http://dsbbq.ca

KNOW YOUR PLACE
Magic happens when you step out of your comfort zone.
out ANd ARouNd CoRNWAll with Carol grant MASQUER-AID 2014
Masquer-Aid 2014 was held on Friday, January 31st at the Ramada Inn. The masquerade ball, hosted by Dr. Raji Menon, Cathy Heenan and Helen DawkesBrown was a beautiful tribute to all those whose families have been affected by childhood cancer and to raise funds for Candlelighters.
Several times a week, I workout with the infamous Jillian Michaels online and
Candlelighters is an Ottawa not-forprofit organization that provides critical support in a variety of ways to children with cancer and their families and fosters development of better understanding of the many challenges and impacts that childhood cancer has on these families' lives.
dread every second of it as she pushes me into a sweaty painful mess. With every challenging movement, I hear her yell “I want you to get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” which helps me realize that if I don’t do this, not only will my arms turn into flabby bingo wings, my life would seem somewhat blasé as my workouts provide me the needed transition from work to home and gives me a boost of creativity and accomplishment!
The Masquer-Aid team would like to thank each and every person that made this night possible. From the major sponsors to those who were at the event, without each and every one this night would not have been possible. Once again Cornwall and Area has risen to the challenge to support this very important charity. And in doing so, they should know they have played a role in enriching the life of a child coping with cancer.
What does this really mean? Be uncomfortable? Everyone tends to get comfortable with the familiar and their routines. It is in our routines that we become under stressed and succumb to safety. Really, when you think about it, we turn into mush, emotionally and physically. We lose out because we are going through life moving forward until we reach the end of the road, as opposed to moving up and out, expanding our horizons and seeing different possibilities.
No one likes to move beyond his or her comfort zone, as it gives an initial feeling of anxiety and it can be terrifying! But when you think about it, that’s where the magic happens. It’s where we grow, learn and develop in a way that increases our landscape beyond what we thought was possible.
Guests mingled in beautiful masks and were able to commemorate the night with a souvenir photo. The evening featured a beautiful full course dinner, speeches, silent auction, live auction, cheque presentation and a dance featuring the local band Spare Partz. It is also noteworthy to mention that it was Dr. Menon's birthday on the night of the event. A beautiful cake was created in her honour as she chose to selflessly give up her special day to host this event.
What makes you uncomfortable enough to step out of your comfort zone? This year, I decided to change it up a little bit in terms of my “exercise” routine. I now go to badminton on Tuesdays nights. This is a BIG deal for me as I don’t play at all, I don’t like getting sweaty with a large group of people and don’t like looking silly and sometimes at badminton you do! It was hard for me to get the courage to go so I also enrolled my husband to come with me. There is a risk to being exposed, to stepping out of your comfort zone however it never ceases to amaze me the people who do venture into unknown territories and change their lives for the better. I have met people who went back to school at age 48 to get a PHD; traveled to India to learn from Master Yogis; trained for a triathlon to combat their fear of swimming; and who ate their lunch at a different location one day and found their soul mate. I am not going to conclude with the “5 easy steps to get out of your comfort zone”. Stepping out is difficult, and it’s totally a personal experience. Some people choose to take GIANT leaps while others take small steps. It doesn’t matter though because when you break free from your comfort zone, in any capacity, you will surely encounter new and exciting experiences that will make your heart beat just a little bit faster and you may even discover a whole new you! “The danger of venturing into uncharted waters is not nearly as dangerous as staying on shore, waiting for your boat to come in.” Charles F. Glassman
Candlelighters CEO Jocelyn Lamont was onhand to give a speech on behalf of the organization. A very poignant and moving speech was also delivered by Paige Dillabough, a survivor of childhood cancer. Diagnosed at the early age of 8 with a brain tumour and now 19 years old, Paige had the crowd in tears as she told the story of her journey to where she is now. This beautiful, spirited young lady has been through so much and although I do not know her personally, I want to thank her for sharing her experiences with us and for being so brave, so strong and for persevering through all that she has gone through. I have learned that approximately $25,000 was raised at the event which makes me so proud to be a part of this wonderful community!! Dr. Raji Menon and her entire committee of organizers, volunteers and the generous sponsors should be commended on their wonderful edeavour of putting together this amazing event which will give hope to future children with childhood cancer and their families. If you’re a parent – or a grandparent – you might want to take the opportunity to share some important financial lessons with your young ones. After all, you’ve probably learned many lessons and have valuable wisdom to share about the basics of saving and investing. Passing all that knowledge along might make a big difference to your kids’ financial well-being in the future. Here are a few tips for getting your youngster off to a good financial start in life. Teach them how to save – Many parents give children an allowance, but that should also come with an understanding of the difference between saving and spending. You might want to show them how to divide their money into two pools – one for spending and the other to be put into a bank account. If children earn extra cash by babysitting, mowing lawns or doing other chores, you could offer to match whatever funds they keep out of the spending pile and in the savings account. That’ll motivate them to save more.
Introduce them to the fun of picking stocks – Children are often fascinated by the idea of owning shares of a company. And the more they understand about stocks, the more interested they become. Consider playing a family “stock-picking” game. Everyone in the family could choose a diverse basket of 10 stocks to follow for a year. Then award a prize to the person whose stock portfolio has performed best. This is a good opportunity to teach the basics of stock analysis, by examining the factors that caused some investments to perform better than others. And don’t underestimate your children’s ability to grasp fairly sophisticated concepts. Children love to learn. You might even take the stock market game a step further and give shares – but make sure they’re quality businesses with good prospects. You also need to be aware that there could be potential tax implications to this.* Lead by example – Show your children how you save and invest. Explain how you saved to make a big purchase, like your car or house. And explain to them how you’re investing in their futures, such as for their post-secondary education. Stress key concepts such as setting objectives and making regular investments. These kinds of lessons can last a lifetime, equipping your children or grandchildren with the tools they need to become smart savers and investors. ART EXHIBITIONS are collections of art displayed in public places. They are often, but not always, displayed in art galleries. An art exhibition is traditionally the space in which art objects meet an audience. (Wikipedia) Exhibitions of new or recent art can be juried, invitational, or open. It is through exhibitions that the artists become known, receive reviews by the public, in the press and on the internet and thus establish themselves in their art practice. For these reasons we work very hard to bring to the public occasions to meet the artists and see their work. Cornwall and area is slowly being exposed to a series of exhibitions. The audience is invited to appreciate the work of local artists. Sometimes the caliber is professional while at other times it is the rendering of an aspiring beginner. Some exhibitions are juried as is the TAG Juried Show or the Focus Art Juried Show in the fall. Other displays are by invitation. At times, all are invited to participate as at the Williamstown Art Fair. However, once in a while an opportunity comes along and a special occasion allows artists and the audience to be thrown together in a very public space. A place where every day (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) passing trade is in the hundreds 8 to 10 thousands. Yes, that is opportunity ANd the CoRNWAll SQuARe IS oPeNINg ItS dooRS to ARt thIS feBRuARy. When opportunity knocks you must be ready. You can never tell when you will be invited to partake in an impromptu exhibition, a group showing or a chance to have your work appreciated, critiqued and maybe even sold. This February members of Focus Art have the great opportunity to exhibit at the Cornwall Square in a wonderful 2700 foot store next to Sears on the Second floor. Thanks to this great partnership with the Square, Focus Art members will enjoy the exposure during two weekends. The doors will be open to the public on Thursday February 20, Friday 21, and Saturday 22 and the following weekend February 27 and 28 and March 1.
Artists will pay to be part of this exhibition and will need to put in some volunteer time but with everyone doing their share the results will be eye candy to the visitors at the Square. This exhibition will have a special purpose. Visitors will be invited to vote for their 12 favourite art works. These pieces will be featured in the 10th Anniversary calendar of Focus Art. In 2015, the Focus Art Association will be 10 years old and we want to share this event with our public. Our sincere thanks to the Cornwall Square for this wonderful opportunity, le Centre culturel de Cornwall for their support and the public who take the time during their busy day to enjoy art.
