Heart for Art There is not doubt in my mind that Arts and Culture are at the heart of every community. Cornwall is no different. We have no lack of talent in this town. Just take, for example, the fabulous production of Les MisĂŠrables recently put on by the Seaway Valley Theater Company and you'll agree with me. We are blessed with proficient and accomplished talent all around.

We have an abundance of musicians, visual artists, writers that are simply fabulous. Yet each and every single one of them seem to struggle with making a living out of their art. Most work full time and can only devote their spare time to doing what they love to do. To make matters worse, artists in this community don't really have a place they can call home. Sure, there is the art gallery for the painters, Aultsville Hall for the actors and the library for the writers, but no such thing as a real Cultural hub where all the disciplines unite. Sports have the Benson Centre, why is it so difficult for artists to have an Art Centre?

I understand that there is a lot of infrastructure to be put in place, but part of the problem, in my opinion, is all the talking that is being done. My perception, as a citizen, is that groups come and go. Council this, committee that... They all come together, some funded, others not, and they talk. They talk and talk and talk. Then they pull back to analyze the results of all that talk and conclude that artists not only want a home, but more importantly NEED a home. And then, it's on to the next phase. Another group is borne from the previous one and they get together for more talks. Don't get me wrong, I love talking. Talking is good, communication is healthy, but at some point, all that talk has to turn to action. Todd Bennet, Chair of the Culture Plan Committee, told attendees of a YAC Let's Talk event last Wednesday that "we are closer now than we have ever been to getting an art centre". Could this be?

Citizens want to take matters into their own hands. A new movement, the "Centre for the Arts Collective" seem to be trying to achieve just that. This group--a group for all those looking to see a Center for the Arts become a reality in Cornwall-- is formally launching their platform this morning (Friday Feb 14). Heart for Art, the first of many planed fundraisers, aims to amass funds for a future Culture and Art Centre. It wants to show the city, by means of money, that artists are serious. Will council listen? I remember, four years ago, all those big promises council candidates made to the arts community. I remember hearing how everybody thought Arts and Culture deserved to have a prominent presence in chambers. It is true that arts have found a louder voice over the last term, but they are a long way from getting the attention they should get. Let's not talk anymore. Let's SHOUT!

No Tanks Update: City receives appeal to Interim Control Bylaw - The City of Cornwall has received an appeal of the Interim Control Bylaw that City Council adopted to prevent the construction of tanks on lands in the harbour area in Cornwall. The appeal has been lodged by Trillium Distribution Cornwall Inc. “It is unfortunate that we have an appeal against City Council’s decisive action in passing the Interim Control Bylaw,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “However, we will defend Council’s action and basis for passing the bylaw.” Business Owner Guy St-Jean joins the race for City Council - Local business owner Guy St-Jean has put his name forward to run for City Council. He is the owner of Neo

Samler makes a second bid for City Council seat - Gary W. Samler, who ran unsuccessfully in 2010, is running again for City Council. Samler is a military veteran, community volunteer, and poverty activist. Cornwall Community Police News - Jamie Gilcig, 49 of Cornwall was arrested on February 10, 2014 and charged with criminal harassment and threats to life. It is alleged that the man repeatedly contacted a 31-year-old man by way of phone calls and e-mails despite having been warned not to. On February 9th, 2014 the man also threatened to kill the 31-year-old man during one of the calls. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On February 10th, 2013 the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on March 20th, 2014.

It is a free admission festival for everyone young and old. From fireworks, to entertainment, skating, and much more. One of the many bands playing the festival are Cornwall's own Coldrift. CFN celebrates five years with arts extravaganza at the Port - It was all smiles for Jamie Gilcig on Sunday afternoon at the Port Theatre. Adorned in his iconic reporters hat and a River Kings jersey, he was the MC for the event, which celebrated CFN’s fifth anniversary. The extravaganza featured arts and culture, including performing arts (comedy), music, and film. There were also guest speakers and a door prize raffle for those who donated money to help the Port purchase a new digital projector.

Comedian Mark Vincent opened the show by roasting Jamie Gilcig. Mandee Woods was simply angelic playing a lovely acoustic set. The afternoon finished with a screening of the movie Blade Runner. Rodney Rivette and Brock Frost were among the many event sponsors.

Sports & Lifestyle

River Kings forward Dominic Chiasson reached a milestone last Saturday - River Kings forward Dominic Chiasson reached a milestone on Saturday night at the Civic Complex but the Laval Braves spoiled the party with a 6-5 road win in front of a boisterous crowd of 2,672. The veteran from Valleyfield scored twice, including his 300th LNAH goal. With the two-loss weekend, the River Kings fell to 12-15-4 on the season. Last Friday The first-place Trois-Rivières Vikings scored four unanswered goals in the second period en route to a 5-2 victory over the River Kings. Chiasson and Sarault scored for Cornwall. Marco Cousineau recorded the victory in goal for the Vikings with a 36-save performance.

Letters & Opinions Brian Lynch responds to Federal Budget - Dear Seeker, The Harper Government’s fourth austerity budget continues to move the country in the wrong direction. The stand-pat budget fails to address the needs and concerns of the residents of Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry who are having a hard time making ends meet in these uncertain economic times. Everyday people are concerned about jobs, their stagnant income and rising household costs, growing income inequality, and their healthcare and pensions. The Harper Government continues to fight the deficit on the backs of everyday Canadians and the public services that we all rely on. The Harper Government should do more to stimulate the economy, create and protect good jobs, and assist the 1.3 million Canadians who are looking for work. To create jobs, the Federal NDP proposes that corporate tax cuts be tied directly to job creation and that spending on infrastructure be increased this year and next year. The Federal NDP, under Tom Mulcair’s strong, experienced leadership, continues to work to make life better, fairer, and more affordable for all Canadians.

February Flash February is the shortest month in the year, but also one of the most active. This year, for me personally, it is actionpacked. As I continue my slow migration back to Cornwall, I spend frequent time on the 401. Each trip back means another car load, as my time as a Kingston resident comes to an end. I have great tunes to listen to as I journey to and fro, and each destination is a welcome stop. The blistering cold weather can't slow me down. In my second week of my new role as Communications Officer in Marketing and Communications, I have been actively on each campus. When I am not working, I am busy packing or unpacking. So life is a bit hectic, but I wouldn't change a thing. When I do get a chance to pause, it is an awesome feeling to spend time with my loved ones. I relish each moment. Brief calls, and quick texts let them know I arrived back and forth safely. This is the first Olympic year that I have not been riveted to my TV, or checking the Internet on stats. Though I am glad to hear that Canada is medalling and performing well. I do hope to catch some of the action during one of my breaks. February is also time to celebrate Family Day and Valentine's Day. Due to my crazy schedule and self-imposed deadlines, they may be blips on my radar, but my move back home will mean plenty of celebrating with my loved ones. Make the most of this brief yet important month. There are plenty of activities both indoor and outdoor. Bundle up and enjoy. Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Family Day!

Fill this special day with lots of love. Our second eldest grandson, Jacob, was born right on this day, 23 years ago. I have two nice recipes for you to start OR end your day with. I have made both in the past couple of weeks. Have a LOVEly Saint Valentine's Day with your special loved ones.

LIGHT AS A CLOUD - BLUEBERRY PANCAKES

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup butter, melted and cool to room temperature 2 extra large eggs 1 cup milk 1 cup dairy sour cream 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla the zest of one lemon 1- 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. fine salt 1 rounded tsp. baking powder 1/2 level tsp. bkaing soda 1 cup blueberries - fresh or, if frozen, first thaw, then place the berries on several layers of paper towels and blot off all of the moisture. Otherwise, you will end up with purple pancakes.

METHOD: -First, melt the butter and allow it to cool to room temperature. -In a bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sour cream and vanilla. Zest the lemon right into the mixture. -Stir in the cooled melted butter. -Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and soda and salt. -Gently stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Mix only to combine. Stir in the blueberries. -Heat your fry pan or griddle. Generously butter the hot surface. -Using a 1/4 cup measure, drop the batter to form pancakes on the hot surface. -Once the edges of the pancakes appear dry and begin to brown slightly and bubbles form on the surface, flip the pancakes and allow to brown on the

other side. -Continue until all the batter is used. I made 16 lovely pancakes. If you have extras, allow to cool completely on a wire cooling rack. Then, place waxed paper or parchment paper between each pancake. Place them in ziploc bags and refrigerate for several days or freeze. To use, just pop them down in your toaster.

BUTTERY PECAN PIE We carry all of the ingredients needed for the pie filling, as well as the frozen, ready to bake pie shell at Sharyn's Pantry. You can have this pie into your oven in less than 10 minutes. Only you will know how easy it was! I won't tell!

This recipe makes one pie. Here is a little hint for you: If you double all of the filling ingredients, you have enough filling to make 3 - 9" pies. A pecan pie freezes beautifully. You can use a homemade unbaked pastry crust or a store bought crust. Just have a 9" pastry shell. 3 extra large eggs, at room temperature 2/3 cup white sugar 1 cup corn syrup, at room temperature (Just golden corn syrup is fine here.) 1/3 cup melted butter 1 cup pecan halves or pieces

FROM MY P ANTRY

HAPPY SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY!

An Open Letter to my Husband on Valentine’s Day Sometimes, you really piss me off. Sometimes, it annoys me when you obsess over every little thing that could go wrong and stress us both out. Sometimes, I wish you would be more into Reality TV and watch my shows with me instead of watching sports 24/7. Sometimes, I wish you would grumble less when I ask you to bring up the many boxes of Christmas decorations when I know you’re ultimately going to do it anyway. Sometimes, I wish you were more artsy and liked photography and scrapbooking as much as I do. Sometimes, I get discouraged and wish we were just more alike. But most of the time, no, all of the time, you make me happy. I am always happy that you can make me laugh even after our worst fights and I am always grateful that you apologize when you know you have hurt my feelings. I always appreciate the tiny details you pay attention to and mull over with a fine tooth comb, because these are the things that help to give us the life we have. I always think it’s sexy how much you love sports and how your athleticism is something we will pass on to our children to keep them healthy instead of sitting them in front of Reality TV and turning their brains to mush. I am always aware that you help me out even when you don’t feel like it and that means so much to me because I know you’re doing it out of love. I know you will never be artsy but I am always thankful that you are able to use your hands to fix the things that break around the house and use your strength to move the heaviest of furniture. I am always thankful that we have a friendship that is based not on how similar we are but how we can see each other’s differences and find love in each other’s flaws.

Sometimes it gets hard, but I know that our love defies all odds and I am always, always so lucky to have you in my life. I am lucky to have in you a best friend, a lover, a confidante, and a man who always puts me first. Not a day goes by that I am not grateful for how life brought us together and keeps us together on our darkest days. The love you have shown me encompasses my world like sunrays bathing the earth and even though dark clouds will come, I am grateful you have taught me that they will always pass. Thank you for being my sun, my moon, and my world. Happy Valentine’s Day, Babe Shannon Shannon loves love. She has a passion for people and understanding the little things that make everyone unique and similar, all at the same time. She has degrees in Communication Studies, Psychology, and Broadcast Journalism but it’s the school of life that taught Shannon most of what she knows about love and relationships. Visit her blog at: thelovehawk.com

-Add into the filling a cup of pure 70% chocolate chips. 1- 9" unbaked pie shell

VARIATION:

THE METHOD: -Set your oven to 350 degrees F. -Whisk the eggs until nice and light. -Stir in the white sugar and corn syrup. Add in the melted butter. -Stir in the pecans. -Pour the filling into your pie shell. -Bake the pie on the lowest rack in your oven. Bake the pie for 50 to 55 minutes. -To know when the filling is cooked enough, take a knife tip or a cake tester and insert it into the centre of the filling. If it comes out clean, with no filling stuck on it, the pie has baked enough. -Allow the pie to cool for a couple of hours before cutting into it. ENJOY!

Positively Marlene

Hi to all of you beautiful people who may be reading my column right now and the rest of the most informative, positive and friendliest paper in Cornwall. The days are getting longer and we are enjoying more of the sunshine these days. Are you aware that Spring is less then five short weeks away...Yes, I am counting the days, the nights, and the weeks because I'm so anxious for Spring to arrive. Aren't you??? Well, you all know what day it is Today...Valentine's Day..the DAY where you are reminded to show someone you love that little bit of extraness...a little more of the love you share with one another. A DAY where the florists are swamped... Where the chocolates, candies and stuffed animals and other stuffed things are sold by the 1,000's. A time to bring your significant other out to a romantic dinner or lovely luncheon. All things to make your "other" feel loved. What are your plans for this Special Love Day??? Hmm??? Here are some little known facts that I found to share with you all... Did you know??? Valentine's Day was first associated with "Romantic Love" in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of "Courtly Love" really took off and flourished. It evolved into an occasion in 18th Century England in which lovers expressed their love for each other by giving bouquets of flowers, (or a single rose, or a fresh, sweet daisy) offering candies and other sweet treats, along with sending each other greeting cards (known as "Valentines") The Valentine's Day symbols that are still used today, include heart-shaped outlines, the figure of the winged Cupid and the "dove" of love. The hand made and hand written cards that were hand delivered to lovers, now have given way to the mass produced cards of today. Sad, but oh so true. Why not make your "loved one" a hand made card this year??? Why not do something completely different and make a romatic kind of supper or luncheon for that ~Special Someone~ in your life this Valentine's Day??? If you are going to be busy working on the day of Valentine's, Why not "timeshift" it...Make plans for another day, when you will be free to enjoy the "niceties" of Valentine's with your loved one. Nearly three years ago, in July 2011, I was separated from the love of my life for nearly three months. I was being a Good Samaritan/Sister and helped and took care of my sister after her operation. It certainly was a challenge for John and I to keep the "flames of love" going over the thousands of miles and hundreds of hours of being apart. But we survived and our love was strengthened and had even grown stronger then ever before. That deep, "Soul-filled love" continues to this very day. It now has been nearly 5 years since the day John and I first met in person. I am certainly one very happy and well loved lady. Of that I am very thankful and grateful. Here is a poem I wrote to my love, John...

You Will Always Dwell Within My Heart We've been through many moments that were so very good and some not so bad, Even moments that were so very HAPPY, and some, so very, very sad. You've supported me John, when I was down and in tears, We've stuck together through these past three years. It is really sad that this summer had to happen and be this way, But, Baby, I can hardly wait, for my very last day. Thousands and thousands of Miles, could NEVER Keep Us Apart. Because You know John, YOU Will ALWAYS DWELL Within My HEART!!! You mean so much to me, Baby,"I LOVE YOU." Tip of the Week: L O V E O N E A N O T H E R!!! Blow Kisses and Give Away HUGS. Do have yourselves a wonderful kind of Valentine's with the ones you love... If you don't have a "significant other" this year, then spread the love with someone that is close to your hearts. Until next time, Keep Sharing Your Beautiful/Handsome Smiles and Paying It Forward. Marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca

TRIPLE P EQUIPS PARENTS WITH TOOLS AND STRATEGIES FOR PARENTING Article and photos by Julia Lucio You could touch the excitement last Wednesday morning at the Ramada Inn as major partners in the new Triple P program gathered together for the official launch.

THE FIRST GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT A SUCCESS! COLLECTS MORE THAN $4000 FOR BALDWIN HOUSE!

Cornwall and area is oftentimes behind on Early Development Instruments. “Triple P really is, in my mind, a way of getting ahead of the curve” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer at the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. The new resource was the initial idea of three partners who worked relentlessly to give it birth. “Because of everyone in the room today, this idea became a full blown reality”, said Rachelle Daignault, Executive Director of the Children’s Aid Society of SD&G, “I believe as a community, we will be much stronger with the help of Triple P”.

Naomi Lamarche and her Girls’ Night Out team presented the Baldwin House with cheques totaling $4,210.20 raised during their first Girls’ Night Out fundraising event for the Baldwin House, held on January 25, 2014 at the Army Navy Air Force Club in Cornwall.

Developed by Matt Sanders, a Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland, Australia, Triple P has been used in 24 countries, translated in 18 languages and has helped more than 6 million children. The program aims to provide solutions for a wide variety of parenting situations. Quoting the famous “your child didn’t come with an instruction manual”, Triple P will help to take the guesswork out of parenting. “We will help parents build stronger relations with their children”, said Mrs. Daignault. “We will give you tools that will make you feel in control, empowered.” The first step is to contact Triple P. Once you register on the website, you will be directed to what pertains to you. This could be a seminar, a group program, etc… The program is offered in our region in both French and English and is accessible via email, phone or through their website.

It was a very good turnout with so many prizes donated by our generous businesses in Cornwall. Their prizes were sold in our auctions which is what made this event successful. Thank you Cornwall. A special thank you goes out to all our volunteers, donors, vendors, special guests, the ANAF who donated the hall and funds, LCBO Brookdale for their book sale donation, the Scotia Bank for their support to our cause and all private donations. Most of all we would like to thank the ladies from the community who came out to join us in celebrating the cause. Thank You!!! See you next year, same time, same place, on January 24, 2015 for the SECOND ANNUAL GIRLS NIGHT OUT!

Although today was the official launch, the program has already been offered to families in the area for the last year through the Children’s Aid Society, the Health Unit and other organizations. Results are very positive. For more information visit: http://www.mytriplep.ca email: info@mytriplep.ca Or Call: 1-844-362-8593

BORDER PATROL with Craig Revelle

A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands With the month of February well underway, race fans can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel. It was a been a very long winter, and without a doubt it has been one of the worst in recent memory as far as snow accumulation throughout the northeast. Speed Weeks in Florida is fast approaching and cars are on the track at Daytona Speedway later this week in preparation for the Daytona 500. Watching NASCAR now just isn’t the same as it used to be. I personally don’t like the gimmicks that they have come up with in recent years to “increase the sport’s popularity”. How is that working out for them? More and more tracks have empty seats, but instead of taking a step back, they add more gimmicks and alienate more diehard race fans that had supported them over the years. I am much more excited about the upcoming season at our local race tracks. Can Am Motorsports Park will open on Friday, April 18th, while Mohawk Raceway opens up with a huge weekend of racing on Saturday, April 26th and Sunday, April 27th with the 1st annual Atomic Spring Clash. Saturday will feature the Go Nuclear Late Model Series along with the Empire Super Sprints and Sportsman. The Go Nuclear Series returns the following day with the Fission 50 (Twin 25s) along with the first race of the season in the Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series.

NEO FURNITURE celebrates their 1st Year Anniversary

Brighton Speedway will get started in early May with their first race of 2014 scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd. Brockville Speedway will begin their 2014 season on Saturday, May 10th. Cornwall Speedway will kick off their new season on Sunday, May 18th. Before the season gets started, there are several pre-season events that I look forward to each year. This past weekend I attended the annual Canadian Motorsports Expo in Toronto. Year after year that show continues to grow, and they reach out and bring in some very high profile drivers and accomplished racers to add to the experience of the show. This year they brought one of the biggest names in the history of NASCAR as Richard Petty did a Q&A session with the fans and signed autographs. I was fortunate enough to get a quick photo of “King Richard” before he departed the International Centre for his return flight to North Carolina. The next pre-season show that I am looking forward to is the Gater News Expo in Syracuse on March 8th & 9th. This will be the 28th annual event. While the Toronto show is a wonderful way to start the 2014 season, the Gater News Expo is more about the cars that I get to watch race each week, and I see many familiar faces roaming the isles of the show as everyone wants to get a sneek peek of whats coming up at area tracks once they get back to racing.

Local business, Neo Vintage Furniture, on Hwy 138, turned 1 year old on Tuesday, February 11th. Many people came to the Anniversary event to wish owners Guy and Charlie and their staff, all the best!

Congratulations from the Seeker!

The Frontenac Mall Car Show in Kingston, Ontario is also a great event that I look forward to each year. Virtually all of the cars are local to either Brockville Speedway of Brighton Speedway. The show starts on March 27th and runs through March 29th. One of the biggest topics over the past few weeks has been Chris Herbison making the move to the 358 Division for 2014, as he takes over the driving duties for the Jim’s Performance Plus (Jim Primrose) ride. Herbison has accomplished a lot in the Sportsman class, and will certainly be one to watch in the Modified division. With Herbison moving on to a new venture, it will be Cory Winters taking the reins of the #63 Stewart Racing car that has been near the top of the division for a few years. Good Luck to Chris and Cory on their new rides. It has yet to be seen where this leaves Tim O’Brien going forward, but hopefully he will be back racing in 2014. One thing is for certain. Winter can’t end soon enough, and I look forward getting back to the race track in 2014. As always, any comments or suggestions can be sent to crevelle@ripnet.com. You can also visit me online at www.finishlinewebdesign.ca, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/crevelle, and on twitter at www.twitter.com/finishlineweb17.
