PUHOI & MAHURANGI WEST Puhoi was founded in 1863 when European settlers from Bohemia arrived at the mouth of the Puhoi River and established a vibrant community that is still thriving today. Puhoi is a beautiful and relaxing village brimming with Bohemian history and small-town charm. Heritage sites are still present in the village, including a church, hotel, library and wharf, and the Puhoi Heritage Museum documents the history of the village. Approximately 30 minutes north of the city of Auckland, the village is the gateway to much of the 900-acre Mahurangi Regional Park, from Wenderholm to Mahurangi West. Visitors to Puhoi can spend the day kayaking, canoeing or exploring nearby Mahurangi Regional Park’s beautiful beaches and walks. Puhoi is also known for its historic pub, award-winning cheese café and a monthly farmers’ market.
A DAY OUT IN PUHOI & MAHURANGI WEST Morning — Head to Wenderholm beach by canoe or kayak from the Puhoi River Canoe Hire, or stop at the historic Victorian-Edwardian Couldrey House, located at the Wenderholm Regional Park, to be transported back in time. Afternoon — An afternoon drive through the charming Puhoi Valley will land you at the Puhoi Valley Cheese Café and Cheese Shop. Book a tour of the factory and relax over a delicious cheese platter. Evening — Puhoi Pub is an ideal spot to end the day. Grab a beer and unwind, taking in the memorabilia and stories hanging on the walls while conversing with the diverse clientele. WARKWORTH Situated on the Mahurangi River, Warkworth is a delightful town with something for everyone. Established in 1853, Warkworth was the site of the first Portland Cement Factory in the Southern Hemisphere, an essential resource for building downtown Auckland. Only 45 minutes north of Auckland, the bustling township today is the gateway to the Matakana Coast Wine Country, and has plenty to offer visitors to the region. Warkworth hosts the Kowhai Festival every October, one of New Zealand’s largest community festivals, and provides entertainment the whole family will enjoy. Throughout the year, Warkworth township’s charming boutique shops, cafés and restaurants cater to all tastes. The Bridgehouse restaurant, bar and accommodation was the first building built in Warkworth and is a bustling hub in the evenings. Set on the banks of the Mahurangi River, it offers easy access to the relaxing Warkworth Town Riverbank Walk.
A DAY OUT IN WARKWORTH Morning — Take the kids to Sheepworld and experience sheep shearing and sorting, baby lambs needing a feed and the highly skilled sheepdog in his element. A cuppa in the café after the show and a walk through the farm park, will top off your visit. Afternoon — Enjoy the afternoon with a lunch of local fish and chips followed by an excursion down the Mahurangi River aboard Warkworth’s restored scow, the Jane Gifford. It won’t disappoint. Evening — After an afternoon spent in the sun, wind-up your day overlooking the water at one of Warkworth’s eateries for dinner. After dinner, take a star-studded walk along the boardwalk and through Lucy Moore Memorial Park, with its double flying fox for some after dinner fun. Down an alleyway in the bustling heart of Warkworth lies a bar that feels like a friendly, quirky oasis tucked away from the rest of the world. The Tahi Bar & Kitchen has served delicious craft beers from this unusual spot for 11 years. The beer taps are made from a recycled Porsche manifold and pour a range of craft beers including Sours, Lagers, Pale Ales, IPAs, Porters and Stouts. The far-reaching new wine list features multi award-winning Otago Pinot Noirs, Reims Champagne, Gironde Bordeaux, Coonawarra Shiraz, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Matakana Rosé and dozens of other divine wines. The kitchen serves a full menu from light nibbles to hearty meals. The Tahi’s idiosyncratic flavour comes from its new owners Rachel Cooney, an artist, and Gareth Hedges, a musician. The interior walls are adorned with electric guitars, bases and a banjo ukulele belonging to Gareth and a few of his musician friends. The front windows feature ever-evolving artworks by portrait artist, Rachel. She managed an art gallery on the Lower East Side of New York and bartended a tiny French restaurant around the corner after the gallery closed. The new look for Tahi is what happens when “an artist and a musician walk into a bar”. The Tahi Bar & Kitchen is open from 3 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 12 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

SCULPTUREUM Visitors don’t need to travel overseas in order to experience a world-class cultural attraction. A haven of art, wine, food and gardens awaits in the private art collection and creative venture of Sculptureum owners, Anthony and Sandra Grant. The Grants have spent 12 years creating a destination designed to unlock the imagination, fuel creativity and ignite the mind. Hundreds of works are currently on display and have been brought together to create an art experience that is internationally unique. They were chosen to amuse, inspire and stimulate. Sculptureum has four key facets to its business: art, wine, events and functions and Rothko restaurant. Sculptureum is currently ranked on Trip Advisor as the Second Top Attraction in Auckland. Wine Beyond the sculpture gardens is the vineyard that produces the grapes from which Sculptureum’s award-winning wines are made. The 11-acre vineyard overlooks the sculpture gardens, with views out toward Little Barrier and Great Barrier Islands. Sculptureum wines are best enjoyed with a meal at the on-site restaurant, Rothko, or visitors can savour the experience of a wine tasting by taking a bottle of wine home. Our wines include a Syrah based Rosé, Chardonnay, Syrah, and a blend of our Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Carménère. To find out more email: vineyard@sculptureum.net Art Sculptureum has the most diverse collection of artworks on display in New Zealand, with more than 750 works in its galleries and gardens. Indoors, visitors can explore six galleries with works from around the world, with works by Picasso, Chagall, Rodin, Koons, Chihuly and Cezanne. The galleries are individually themed and include the best display of international glass art in the Southern Hemisphere. The owners are constantly evolving the displays, so visitors can experience new displays regularly. Visitors can ask Sculptureum about an Annual Pass to ensure the best value for money for multiple entries to a gem of the region with visiting friends and family. LEIGH, GOAT ISLAND & PAKIRI Leigh village is a quaint, close-knit community committed to its stellar environment. Locals can be seen surfing out at Daniel’s Reef and then grabbing some fish and chips from Leigh Eats. Leigh, Goat Island and Pakiri are an outdoor enthusiast’s haven. Home to New Zealand’s first Marine Reserve, Goat Island offers an education for visitors at the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre, run by the University of Auckland, while the reserve itself offers hands-on experience with abundant marine life. Ti Point Reptile Park lies on the outskirts of Leigh, and is a familyfavourite destination - you may even spot the native Tuatara! Pakiri Beach is a quick drive from Leigh, but feels days away with its long, white beach. Pakiri Beach Holiday Park offers accommodation, and horse riding, fishing, surfing and beachcombing are all top of the activities list when visiting.
A DAY OUT IN LEIGH, GOAT ISLAND & PAKIRI Morning — Get your togs on for a morning swim in Mathesons Bay. Venture out to the Mathesons Bay Island and back. Then let the kids enjoy the morning on the beachside playground. Mobile coffee vans are often waiting on the shore during the summer months. Not interested in getting wet? Perhaps a morning on the wharf, fishing, is the perfect antidote. Afternoon — Spend the afternoon on Pakiri horse riding up and down the 9km of white sand. Or book a surfing lesson for the whole family. Evening — A night on the town doesn’t get any better than dinner and a concert at Leigh Sawmill Café. Check out their gig guide (www.sawmillcafe.co.nz/gigguide) and plan accordingly! Photo credit: Leigh, Pakiri Beach & Ti Point Trees by Gavin Matheson. Close-up portrait by Gemma Barton. MANGAWHAI Mangawhai’s stunning beaches and bush were once the first stopping ground for Maori and Europeans trying to reach the Kaipara Harbour. But Mangawhai has continued to flourish as its popularity has now grown to become one of the top holiday destinations in the area. Sailing, fishing, surfing, kayaking or anything else you can do on the water are all possible in Mangawhai. The cerulean waters of Mangawhai aren’t all that is on offer either. Mangawhai has a lively art scene, a newly built history-packed museum, a family-friendly adventure park, markets and one of New Zealand’s top golf courses. A day trip or weekend are never enough. Accommodations abound in Mangawhai, from bachs, campsites, camps and lodges, so choosing to experience ‘Magical Mangawhai’ is easy.
A DAY OUT IN MANGAWHAI Morning — Hire a bike and spend the morning mountain biking on Tanekaha Falls Track. Interested in something less physical? Enjoy all the village has to offer: art and ceramic galleries, boutique shops and cafés. Afternoon — The Mangawhai Activity Zone is the ideal place on land to keep the kids entertained with a skate park, flying fox and playground. Follow it up with an estuary walk, home to the protected New Zealand Fairy Tern and Dotterel. Evening — End a magical day in Mangawhai by heading to the Mangawhai Tavern or Wood Street Freehouse for family-friendly fun and entertainment. Photo credit: Mangawhai Heads Sunset by Deon Hamilton. WAIPU & LANGS BEACH The Waipu coast of the 1850s saw the migration of just under 1,000 Scottish settlers, fleeing famine and persecution and looking for their piece of paradise. They found it. Waipu is a lovely coastal town with a commitment to its Scottish history. Waipu and Langs Beach offer exquisite beaches and beautiful environs for travellers looking for relaxation. For nearly 150 years, Waipu has celebrated its heritage with the annual Waipu Highland Games. Participants donn the plaid and join with their clan to compete in traditional Highland Games. Nearby walking tracks and the Waipu Caves give guests a chance to explore this area and see why the Scottish settlers found their little piece of paradise.
A DAY OUT IN WAIPU & LANGS BEACH Morning — Spend your morning and early afternoon at one of the remarkable beaches. Feel like surfing, swimming or sitting under the picturesque Pohutukawa trees? Waipu Cove and Langs Beach have you covered. Afternoon — Piroa Falls is an idyllic waterfall a short trek off State Highway 1. If you crave another dip in the water, you can do that too! If you have time on your way back into town, stop at the Waipu Museum and immerse yourself in the history of Waipu. Evening — A stroll on one of the amazing beaches while watching the sunset perfectly caps off a relaxing day. Photo credit: Waipu waterfall by Diana Langton. Langs Beach Pohutukawa by Barry Clark. OYSTER FESTIVAL MATAKANA Now in its third year, Oyster Festival Matakana kicks off the Mahurangi shucking season with a selection of the region’s finest. A day of festivity to mark the first catch from the birthplace of oyster farming in New Zealand it sees the crème de la crème of the farming community converge for a day of face-to-face feasting with seafood fanatics. 2019’s event will feature a buffet of bivalves from local farms Bio Marine, Mahurangi Oysters and Orata Marine Oysters who will each be cracking out delicious morsels, plump and full of sweet and salty goodness. Paired with an exquisite line-up of local beverages and produce, this all-weather event entertains the whole family with live music, cooking demonstrations and of course an all-day shucking competition!
