New beginnings
Inspired by co-founder Sarah's desire for natural products that were safe to have around her breastfeeding babies, Little Mango was born seven years ago. Now, her best friend Chelsea Holmes - a mother of four, soon to be five - has taken the reins and is excited to lead the business into its next chapter.
An avid user of Little Mango deodorants, Chelsea brings her own experience having previously ran an organic café and refillery. Passionate about n atural living, she’s eager to refine the brand’s signature deodorant st icks while also expanding the product line.
Years ago, Rachel Williams found herself adventuring through the Sahara Desert. The vastness was awe-inspiring, the silence and solitude overwhelming. As she emerged from the endless dunes and approached the Moroccan border, her group was confronted by 10 men in black uniforms, pointing AK-47s in their direction. However, after offering their best Kiwi greetings, the guards soon realised they were tourists and the tension began to fade.
These guards, stationed at the remote border for four weeks with supplies meant only for two, quickly warmed to Rachel and her companions. Their vehicle was filled with provisions, and soon enough, everyone was sitting together, sharing snacks and a hot cup of coffee. With smiles, hugs, and stamped passports, the travellers left
EXPANDING HORIZONS –RACHEL WILLIAMS
Travel has shaped who Rachel Williams is, and now she has the privilege of watching it shape others. From life lessons to the inspiration for her business, this is how travel made Rachel a better human and eventually landed her in Warkworth with her husband and two children.
behind some extra supplies, for the grateful guards. What could have been a dangerous encounter instead became an opportunity f or connection.
Rachel grew up on the Hibiscus Coast and, like many of her generation, embarked on an overseas experience (OE) to Europe after finishing university. But the allure of more exotic lands soon led her, alone, to the Middle East. At the time, her worldview had been shaped by the adults around her and the New Zealand media - neither of which portrayed the Arab world favourably. “Friends thought I was crazy to go, warning me about how dangerous it was,” says Rachel. But her experience defied all stereotypes.
The Arab world greeted her with kindness, beauty, and a rich cultural heritage; and Rachel quickly realised how isolated and
ignorant one can be growing up in a small country at the bottom of the world. Instead of returning home to settle into a ‘real job,’ she spent the next eight years guiding overland tours through Africa and South America.
On one particularly cold day in the Peruvian Andes, Rachel was wearing a pair of Havaiana jandals when an elderly local woman approached her, offering her the shoes off her feet to keep her warm. Though Rachel's jandals cost far more than the woman’s sandals made from old tyres, and though she had plenty of suitable footwear back at her hotel, the woman didn’t know that and was willing to give Rachel the shoes off her own feet. ”I realised in that moment what it really means to give, and how few of us ever really make true sacrifices when giving to others,” reflects Rachel.
While Africa and South America will always hold a special place in Rachel’s heart, one destination stands above the rest: Antarctica. “I have seen many people moved to tears in Antarctica, and most are unable to explain the emotion, but I think it is awe. It’s a feeling of being deeply connected to the world while understanding your own insignificance. In those moments I feel most alive, most creative, and most grateful. It’s a level of awe that I wish everyone could experience m ore often.”
Today, through her company, Viva Expeditions, Rachel has the honour of helping others embark on their own enriching, empowering, and meaningful travel experiences. In addition to bespoke itineraries and small group tours, Viva Expeditions offers once-in-a-lifetime adventures with high-profile Kiwis, last year chartering a luxury Antarctica expedition vessel for an exclusive trip hosted by Sir John Key, and recently announcing an epic African rail safari tour with beloved TV presenter Hilary Barry i n 2025.
“I strive to open people’s hearts, broaden their minds, and help them experience awe,” notes Rachel. “Hearing their stories upon their return is the greatest reward ever.” www.VivaExpeditions.com
MATAKANA LIQUOR
BEHIND THE LENS - A MISTAKE
Based on Wellington author Carl Shuker’s critically acclaimed novel, director Christine Jeffs brings A Mistake to life on the big screen. This gripping and emotive film beautifully explores the fine line between human error and accountability, leaving audiences questioning their own perceptions. Junction sat down with Christine Jeffs for an exclusive look behind the lens.
How did this project come about and what attracted you to telling this story?
As a filmmaker I’m always curious about stories that might trigger the passion to make a film. I often visit Matakana Village Books and saw Carl Shuker’s book there and bought it. The back cover said it was ‘a compelling story of human fallibility and the dangerous hunger for black and white answers in a world of exponential complication and nuance.’ The story was led by a female surgeon. Carl’s story was intense. I was hooked. My partner had also experienced medical misadventure, so it was a story that I could reflect on personally.
How closely did you adhere to the original story and what influenced your creative choices?
There are some differences between the book and the film. In my adaptation, I focused on writing some new material triggered by the themes I wanted to dive into more deeply. I wanted to focus on the family a little more
and the journey of the lead character played by Elizabeth Banks. My creative choices were driven by questions such as, ‘Why would I want to tell this?, and “In what way can I express this?’ I think the tone is true to the book in many ways.
What was the process and timeline to put a project such as this together?
Films do take a long time to get off the ground. And in fact this one was relatively quick. There’s the idea to make it, writing and developing the screenplay, gathering the team that collaborate to bring the film together. In addition, attracting the finance, the casting, the shooting, the post-production and, of course, the sales and distribution elements. There are so many people involved in the whole go to whoa process. It took at least three years to make, yet the filming was only 33 days. I have imagined and reimagined the film so many times. I am not yet bored of it.
The story requires a strong female lead, how did you approach casting for this role and how did Elizabeth Banks become involved?
My agent in Los Angeles was very excited about the script and supportive for the film to be made. We engaged casting directors a s well.
It was a confluence of many factors that brought this together and all of the elements had to be delicately balanced. Elizabeth Banks responded immediately to the role and to the screenplay and this was followed with a zoom conversation together. She arrived in New Zealand just before filming from Europe so there was no time for any dramatic rehearsal although we did do a quick choreographic rehearsal of the surgery, and that was essential. In Los Angeles, weeks prior, Elizabeth had done technical surgical rehearsal and that was very effective so she knew what was required for the role with the intense surgical sequence.
Tell us about the involvement of locals and how you utilised the local area in the film.
I wanted to bring Matakana into this as much as possible. There are so many amazing creative people here. Many generous locals helped us.
I found Georgie, our film dog, walking Omaha Beach with Rockie, her owner, who just happens to be an intensive care nurse and she helped during filming as a nurse consultant. We edited the film here up at Ray White’s premises. Over the years, I have edited three films in the Matakana area and want to do it again.
Matakana Cinemas are an amazing resource and allowed us to screen the film during our edit process. This was invaluable and much appreciated. Mike Petre and Vicky Fanning lent us some of their art collection, which you can see on the walls of our character’s house. And we found a key location at Leigh, the owners were so generous to let us stage a very important scene in their home. We also did a driving sequence on the road toward Leigh. So, lots of local involvement. www.MatakanaCinemas.co.nz/movie/A-Mistake-2

SMALL BATCH, BIG DREAMSSHAGGY SURFWEAR
What began as a few hand-drawn designs and an Instagram page has since evolved into a flourishing business that proudly represents local surf culture.
In 2020, Jacob Bindon set out to fill a gap in New Zealand’s surfwear scene, creating what would become the beloved brand, Shaggy. Tired of high international shipping fees from overseas surf brands, Jacob took matters into his own hands, while putting a Kiwi spin on it. From his days at Matakana Primary School and Mahurangi College, Jacob’s connection to the local area runs deep. “Growing up between Omaha and Tawharanui, the area has been a source of inspiration for many of the designs, and the laid back coastal lifestyle has massively influenced the brand” he says.
Shaggy’s growth has been organic, with Jacob navigating the challenges of building a brand as they came. One of the defining features of Shaggy is its commitment to small-batch surfwear, ensuring each piece is

you’re not going to see every second person wearing the same hat as you,” he adds.
Shaggy is very much a family affair. Jacob runs the creative side, while his wife, Anna Bindon, handles the logistics and administration. Recently, the couple’s lives took on even more meaning with the arrival of their daughter. “Becoming a dad has added a whole new dimension to this journey,” Jacob shares, reflecting on the added purpose and motivation that parenthood has brought to their lives and business.
Recently, Shaggy reached a significant milestone with the opening of its first physical store at Matakana Country Park, a dream Jacob didn’t expect to achieve so soon. The shop now offers Shaggy a new way to connect with its local community. The process of setting up the shop was a labour of love, with both Jacob and Anna working
late nights and early mornings to get it ready for customers. “This summer, we plan to find our feet in retail and have a bit of fun with it,” Jacob says. The shop is open every Sunday during the market and will extend its hours daily throughout the summer holidays, giving customers the chance to see and feel Shaggy’s products in person.
Shaggy’s product lineup offers boxy printed tees and hats in six and five-panel styles, made from hemp, cotton, and corduroy. While the winter collection is nearly sold out, the December drop will be the brand’s biggest yet, with new hats and tees just in time for summer. With the new store in place and exciting products on the horizon, Shaggy is ready to grow both its product range and its community presence.

CUSTOM CREATIONS WITH AITKEN SURFBOARDS
A passionate surfer and craftswoman, Lou Aitken has been building boards for nearly 10 years, culminating in the opening of her own Matakana-based factory.
Lou’s love for surfing began when she was just five years old, chasing her older brother through the waves at Sandy Bay, Northland. By the age of 20, she had completed her trade as a cabinet-maker and was ready to explore new avenues. Her journey into surfboard building began while she was on an overseas experience on the Gold Coast, leading Lou through different factories in both Australia and New Zealand where her skill-set flourished.
Having always enjoyed working with her hands, and with a cabinet-making
background, surfboard crafting felt like a natural fit. What began as simply a means to fund her adventures evolved into a creative outlet for Lou as she fell in love with the process of building surfboards.
Honing her skills, Lou has worked alongside other talented shapers and board builders across the industry, including spending a year in Whangamata with Pete Anderson, sanding and finishing Anderson Surfboards. During this time, she also mastered the intricate process of ‘ding fixing,’ repairing damaged surfboards back to their original
state and getting them back in the water, much like a panel beater works on cars. Ding fixing also introduced Lou to the world of spray painting, a skill that has since become integral to her custom surfboards. Her signature brightly coloured resin work is one of the many features that set her apart from others in the industry, not to mention her unique perspective as a woman in a maledominated field.
Now, with years of experience behind her, Lou has established her own small factory in Matakana. Each board she crafts is
uniquely tailored to suit the surfer it’s made for, with Lou spending time understanding each client’s surfing style and preferences. She takes particular pride in designing the perfect board for wahine surfers, sharing in their growing presence in the surfing community. "There are now more women surfing than ever, which is a great thing to see," s he notes.
Having mastered every step of the surfboardbuilding process - shaping, glassing, sanding, and finishing - Lou is collaborating with surf shops throughout the region, including Summer Sessions, offering a convenient pick-up and drop-off repair service. She is eager to continue building relationships with local surfers and playing a part in their journeys back to the water.
Lou is currently accepting custom surfboard orders and offers a range of repair services for surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, and surf club equipment. She looks forward to supporting future surf competitions in the area and growing her involvement in the local surfing community.

RIDING THE WAVE
Making history with three talented young surfers from Mahurangi College on the team for the first time, Auckland has claimed victory at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Surf Nationals.
Ari O’Malley, Ziggy Neely, and Taj Robinson, are the first Mahurangi College students selected for this elite squad, competing at the prestigious event that gathers the nation’s top surf talent. Over the past four years, under the dedicated leadership of the school’s surf program coordinator, Mike Burton, and with support from parents, Mahurangi has quietly become a hot spot for surf talent.
Through focused development, the students have honed their skills on local East Coast beaches like Omaha, Mangawhai and Te Arai, carving their paths on waves that may not be the biggest but have proven to be the perfect training ground for these rising stars. “These boys have always been passionate about surfing,” says Mike. “It’s amazing to see them represent Mahurangi at such a high level.”
Taking place in Dunedin this year, the Auckland team thrived despite challenging conditions that included flooding before clearing to perfect surf. Taj Robinson, from Mangawhai, captured gold in the under 18 boys longboarding, becoming the national champion. Ari O’Malley and Ziggy Neely both put in stellar performances in the under 18 boys short board division, with Ziggy reaching

the semifinals and Ari the quarterfinals. “The waves were just awesome,” reflects Ari. “To surf in such great conditions, and with such a strong team, was unreal. Competing against the best surfers from across New Zealand and testing myself against them was an incr edible experience.”
All three surfers have grown up with the sea as their playground, chasing waves at every opportunity. Ari, Ziggy, and Taj are proud to represent not only Mahurangi College but their entire local surf community, with their efforts contributing to Auckland’s overall victory, marking only the second time in history that the team has won the national title. “Winning the championship is a huge deal,” notes Mike. “It proves that Auckland surfers can hold their own against the best in the country.”
This is only the beginning for these young athletes, and with the school’s surf program continuing to grow these achievements highlight a bright future for Mahurangi Coll ege surfing.

WAIPU’S RIVER WALKSHAPED BY THE COMMUNITY
The Waipu River Walk stands as a community-driven project that has turned a stretch of riverside into an easy loop trail with scenic views.
Words Olivia Freestone
Starting at Waihoihoi Park, the trail winds along the river to Nova Scotia Drive before circling back into town, taking about an hour to complete. In 2019, the Whangārei District Council provided funding for a communityled initiative in Waipu. By 2020, a local committee was established to collect input from residents, and the Waipu River Walk emerged as the chosen project. While the funding was essential, it was the dedication of the community that brought the plan to fruition, turning the area into a scenic green space for both locals and visitors.
Over the past few years, the project has gained momentum through regular working bees, where volunteers have cleared weeds, planted native plants, and shaped the path. With each passing season, the trail has evolved, becoming a beloved space for locals to enjoy.
The Waipu River Walk is now a perfect leisurely walk for both locals and visitors. It offers an accessible route through heritage-rich areas, providing ample opportunities to enjoy nature, with stunning river views along the way. The walk itself is suitable for all ages, and it’s a great way
to take in the natural beauty of Waipu. Local resident James Alexander shares how he loves walking along this trail with his young daughters, acknowledging that its clear and wide pathways are perfect for prams a nd kids.
As the walk continues to grow, additional improvements are underway. The muddy patches that once slowed walkers have been addressed, and signage is being installed to highlight key features of the local environment. Visitors are encouraged to stop and enjoy the recently added seating, providing the perfect spot to take in the tranquil surroundings.
Waipu River Walk is a testament to the power of community collaboration. It’s a space where locals come together, connect, and create something lasting for generations to enjoy. For those looking to experience Waipu’s beauty, this river walk is not to be missed.

TE KOHUROA REWILDING
Locally-led marine conservation project, Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative (TKRI), creates hands-on restoration activities to support the regeneration of the coastline at Matheson Bay, Leigh.
Words Frances Dickinson Images www.Benthics.com
This summer TKRI is on a mission to bring the wider community together to care for their own ‘blue backyard’ and inspire a new wave of coastal guardians. Te Kohuroa/Matheson Bay is a popular destination and recreation space for local ocean swimmers, spearfishers and visitors who come to enjoy the calm, sheltered waters and rocky reefs.
Below the waves however, the intricate marine life and kelp forests are struggling to thrive. After years of human impacts such as overfishing, run-off and sedimentation, plus the increasing pressures from rising sea temperatures, the marine ecosystem is at a tipping point. In 2023, local freediver and underwater science communicator, Frances Dickinson decided to do something about it.
“After spending a year filming and photographing the underwater ecosystems in the bay, I was becoming increasingly frustrated by what I was witnessing. It was clear to me that the animals and habitats I cherished were not thriving,” explains Frances. “So I started researching the possibility of a restoration project to see what we could do as a community to change that”.
TKRI is now working with iwi, organisations and local community groups to deliver a ground-up approach to healing Te Kohuroa’s marine ecosystem through

a long-term restoration program. The project design has been brought together through the contributions of a wide variety of stakeholders including leading science from the University of Auckland’s Reef Ecology Team, freshwater catchment management from the Mountains to Sea Trust and local conservation umbrella Restore Rodney East.
The goal of the project is to give Te Kohuroa/ Matheson Bay a helping hand through well thought out restoration activities, and a voice by telling the story of the bay, its people and the ecosystem itself, raising the well-being of the bay. This is being delivered through a mix of environmental monitoring, storytelling and volunteering activities which aim to make it easy and fun for everyone to participate in local conservation action.
This year the Pilot Program, running September 2024 to June 2025, is focusing on gathering critical information about the biodiversity within the bay, including the kauri forest, wetlands and awa/river, plus kelp forest restoration on the outer reef. There is an extensive program of summer events for individuals and families to come and learn about the importance of the marine ecosystem, and get hands-on experience on the land and in the ocean to support the restoration of the bay.

LITTLE ‘LATO HAVE DONE IT AGAIN
Founded by gelato enthusiast Hannah Wood, Little ‘Lato has taken home the prestigious Supreme Champion Boutique Ice Cream Producer award at the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards for the second time, as well as receiving four additional awards.
Known for its innovative flavours and commitment to quality, Little 'Lato has gained widespread recognition - not just for its traditional offerings but also for its exceptional vegan options. Hannah’s journey to gelato success began in 2015 when she received a scholarship to study at the renowned Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy. With a background in Food Technology and previous roles at Fonterra and Much Moore, her passion for ice cream was undeniable.
After her time in Italy she saw an opportunity to bring this premium product to New Zealand. “We have the highest global consumption of ice cream but little availability of premium gelato,” she explains. Little 'Lato was born out of this vision in 2017, initially launched in a small café in Auckland's Morningside. Since then, the brand has expanded with parlours in Hamilton and Waipu, partnerships across the country, and pre-packaged tubs available in boutique grocers, delis, and vineyards.
What sets Little 'Lato apart is its small-batch production process. Each batch is churned in their Auckland kitchen, ensuring a velvety texture and flavour-packed experience. Gelato, which is served at a warmer temperature and contains less fat and no added air compared to traditional ice cream,
allows the flavours to shine. This attention to detail has led to the creation of nearly 500 unique flavours, ranging from classics to more daring concoctions like Massaman Curry and Asparagus Cream Cheese.
Little 'Lato’s latest triumph at the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards showcased both its creativity and also its dedication to inclusivity. Mango Lassi became the first dairy-free ice cream to win the Supreme Award, exemplifying the brand’s goal of crafting delicious gelato that everyone can enjoy, including those on vegan and glutenfree diets. Alongside this, Little ‘Lato’s Sour Cream, Lemon and Berries gelato took home the titles for Best Gelato and Best New Product launched in the last 12 months, while the Hazelnut Chocolate gelato, loaded with New Zealand hazelnuts, was crowned Best of New Zealand Produce.
Having recently opened its flagship parlour in Ponsonby, as well as reopening the Waipu store at 1 Cove Road for summer, the brand continues to innovate, offering something for every palate. From traditional favourites to experimental flavours, Little 'Lato is pushing the boundaries of what gelato can be, with a commitment to quality, creativity, and inclusivity at its core.

November is the ideal time to plant heat-loving fruits and vegetables that will thrive in the warmer weather. Make the most of the sunny locations in your garden and enjoy crops for the summer that will enhance fresh salads, stir-fries, and grilled dishes over the coming months.
Courgettes and Cucumbers
Fast growing crops, both courgettes and cucumbers prefer sunny locations and welldraining soil. They can be planted directly in the garden from seed or as seedlings. For best results, wait until the soil has warmed up to around 18°C and the risk of frost has passed, ensuring rapid germination and healthy growth.
When sowing seeds, plant them 2-3cm deep in well-prepared soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Space courgette plants about 60-80 cm apart, as they can spread considerably. Courgettes are best grown in wide, open spaces where their large leaves can spread without shading neighbouring plants. Cucumbers can be spaced around 45-60cm apart but benefit from being grown vertically using a trellis or stakes, which not only saves space but also improves air circulation and keeps the fruit off the ground, reducing the risk of disease, rot or pest damage. If growing in pots, choose a deep container (at least 40 cm deep) with good drainage. Use high-quality potting mix and ensure the plants get plenty of sunlight throughout the day.
Mulching around the base of the plants helps keep the soil moist and prevent water stress,
ensuring well-draining soil. Avoid overhead watering, as wet leaves can promote mildew and other fungal diseases.
Water both crops regularly and consistently, especially during hot, dry weather.
Courgettes and cucumbers are thirsty plants that require plenty of moisture to develop their large, juicy fruits. Fertilise every 2-3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage steady growth and fr uit production.
Courgettes grow quickly and should be harvested when they reach around 15-20cm in length for the best flavour and texture. If left too long, they can become oversized and tough. Regular harvesting also encourages continuous production throughout the season.
Cucumbers are ready for picking when they are firm, smooth, and the desired size for the variety you’re growing. For most cucumber varieties, this is when they reach about 1520cm in length. Like courgettes, frequent harvesting promotes further fruit production.
Plant courgettes and cucumbers this November to enjoy an abundant summer harvest, perfect for salads, grilling, and refreshing summer snacks.

Foodstuffs North Island, has opened a new Four Square store in Snells Beach on Mahurangi East Road, representing a multi-million dollar investment in the community and creating 20 new roles for locals.
The new supermarket opened today and is a larger format store designed to the latest Four Square brand standards with an ultra-modern interior and over 900 sq m of retail space, making it one of the largest Four Squares in New Zealand. It has more than 8,200 products on offer, including fresh food like hot chicken and chips, scoop ice cream and barista-made coffee.
Four Square Snells Beach Fast Facts
• Owned and operated by David and Helen Whyman
• 900 sq m of retail space
• Multi-million dollar investment in the Snells Beach community
• Over 8,200 products
• 20 new roles for locals
• Free parking with 195 shared car parks available
• Two team member-operated check outs and three selfservice check outs
• Lotto kiosk
• Free wi-fi and charging station
Foodstuffs North Island’s Head of Four Square, Greg Stone said the Snells Beach store is the latest addition to a brand that turned 100 earlier this year.
“Four Square has been there for countless barbeques, road trips and everyday missions to top up on the essentials. There’s been no supermarket near Snells Beach for some time, so it’s wonderful to be able to offer a one-stopshop for the 7,000 people in this community,” he said.
Every year Foodstuffs North Island invests around $100 million in property and supply chain upgrades across its stores.
Four Square Snells Beach is owned and operated by David and Helen Whyman, experienced operators who previously owned and ran Four Square Matakana and Four Square Waipapa. David began his grocery career at New World Kerikeri, working alongside then-owner-operator David Hannan in 2014. He later bought an independent store in Waipapa and converted it to become the owner-operator of his first Four Square store, Four Square Waipapa, which he successfully managed for five years.
In 2021, the Whymans relocated to Matakana, where they took over the local Four Square, a
central community hub in the picturesque rural town.
When they saw the opportunity to establish a brand-new Four Square in Snells Beach, they knew it was the right move for them and their family.
“With a large population but no supermarket close by, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to create a store that could become a central hub for the community, in a way that’s similar to Four Square Matakana,” said David Whyman.
“It’s important that we create a space for the community, a place where people want to meet, so have installed communal seating and offer free wi-fi and charging points – something very few supermarkets offer,” he said.
The Whymans moved to Snells Beach in May 2023 as they loved the area and wanted it to be the place they called home. It was by coincidence the opportunity to develop Four Square Snells Beach came about.
“We’ve loved working with local tradespeople to build the store and the outcome is a credit to each and every person who has lent a hand. We’re enjoying the beach lifestyle and getting to know the locals. Kawau Bay is a spectacular part of the Hauraki Gulf and we feel very privileged to live and work here.”
“It’s just such a great place for our family, we’ve really enjoyed getting to know the community and everyone that’s already popped in to say hello and check out the new space,” said David.
INDUSTRIAL SOPHISTICATION MEETS MINIMALISM
Nestled into the slope of one of North Omaha's rare elevated sites, this house by architect Chris Bassett of Designpoint Architecture blends minimalism with refined industrial aesthetics, resulting in a structure that feels both grounded and dramatic.
Presenting a simple yet striking, low-lying, minimalist form, upon approach a lower-level courtyard is revealed with a stunning doubleheight, fully glazed stairwell. The home’s architectural entrance reflects the clients' vision, which called for drama despite restrictions that prevented a higher roofline. Chris answered this challenge by vertically excavating downwards, creating an almost subterranean courtyard which allows morning light to filter into the adjacent study through intricate steel elements. The result is a space that feels simultaneously grand and intimate.
The building’s exterior - composed of precast concrete and standing seam metal cladding - complements the industrial aesthetic, while remaining low maintenance in the harsh coastal environment. Inside, the design carries elements from the exterior, with timber-shuttered precast concrete
faces added where possible. This nod to the clients' request for a raw, textured touch enhances the seamless connection between the home and its environment.
Beyond its structural beauty, the home is designed to capture the panoramic views of the estuary. Upon entering through the large, Dekton-clad pivot door, the eye is immediately drawn to the stunning waterscape, naturally leading one toward the spacious living area. Among the home’s unique features is a suspended fireplace - the first in New Zealand to be converted from wood-burning to gas by Living Flameadding a visually impactful yet unobtrusive feature to the living space.
The entry stairwell, with its solid oak treads features backlit, custom-designed perforated steel panels. Meticulously designed by Chris, the bespoke layout and arrangement of the
perforated steel panels, each one slightly unique and laser-cut with precision, adds a touch of artistry to the industrial theme. Suspended lighting, crafted from steel and copper wire, brings a subtle touch of glamour to the space.
The dark tones, steel and machine-like detailing juxtaposed with the brightness and lightness of the main hall creates a seductive quality, leading to a temperaturecontrolled frameless glass wine cellar at the base of the stairs. A dedicated plant room houses the home’s cutting-edge technology, from solar-powered batteries to home automation systems, while a luxurious home theatre, complete with luxury seating and bespoke sound system - offering a high quality acoustic experience while minimising sound transmission to adjacent spacesprovides the ultimate in-home entertainment.
Images Jamie Corbel
One of the more challenging aspects of the design was integrating practical elements, such as a secondary garage accessed via a rear right-of-way, a swimming pool, and stormwater solutions on a sloping site, all while maintaining refined industrial aesthetics with minimalist lines. Designpoint navigated these complexities by incorporating clean and discreet construction details, such as concealed weld plates within the precast panels, which required careful engineering and design review.
Chris Bassett’s design showcases how thoughtful architecture can maximise a site’s potential while delivering a home that is both highly functional and visually captivating.
Brought to life by Brackenridge Builders, the careful use of natural light and shadow, along with contrasting materials and textures, help this Omaha residence strike a perfect balance between industrial strength and inviting sophistication.

MATAKANA CARVING
Tucked behind the horse stables at Matakana Country Park, a new studio has emerged, offering hands-on pounamu carving workshops.
Words Olivia Freestone
Local couple Steffan and Jaci are excited to create a permanent space where they can share their passion for the craft with the community. Jaci has been a familiar face at the Matakana markets, selling their pounamu designs and taonga at a small stall for many years. Now, inspired to share their knowledge and passion, they have opened their o wn studio.
Jaci’s connection to carving comes from her father, Steve Gwaliasi, a Hokitika-based carver with over 30 years of experience. Steve runs Bonz ‘n’ Stonz, where he works with pounamu sourced from local iwi along the rivers of the South Island. Jaci grew up surrounded by the art, learning its traditional methods and values. Steve’s passion extended to Steffan, who first saw carving as a fun activity during their summer visits to Hokitika. “Every time he’d come with me, he’d get into it, then he started teaching and
really fell in love with it,” Jaci says. Inspired by these experiences and with Steve’s enthusiastic support, they have brought Matakana Carving to life.
The studio has taken several months to set up with Steffan building each carving machine himself. He had to source parts from places like the U.S. and England. “You can’t just go to Mitre 10 and pick these up,” he jokes, highlighting the intricate nature of t he machinery.
Matakana Carving offers flexible workshops for all skill levels, allowing people to create something deeply personal. Beginners can start by shaping and polishing pounamu river pebbles, learning how to drill and add bindings in sessions lasting one to two hours. For those looking to create more intricate pieces, such as pendants or bracelets, longer workshops provide in-depth guidance and all necessary materials. The studio also

supports more complex designs using materials like shells, crystals, or other stones. Jaci emphasises that carving is as much about the experience as it is about the finished product. “You can just get taken away by it,” she says. “It's a peaceful spot here, perfect for artistic work.”
In the future, the couple hopes to expand the space to include a small shop displaying their handcrafted pieces alongside creations by Jaci’s father. For now, their focus is on the workshops. As summer approaches, Matakana Carving looks forward to welcoming more visitors and group events into their creative space. With strong community ties and a passion for carving, Jaci and Steffan hope their studio will become a cherished local favourite.
An historical and unique part of rural Warkworth is for sale for the first time in over 50 years.
This lovely old homestead nestled amongst native bush, was built on land purchased from an original Government grant on 8th July 1871. The initial owners hand-built their home from pit-sawn totara milled from the bush and dragged down by oxen. Kauri shingles were split to cover the roof, to be replaced by corrugated iron years later. The walls were originally insulated by newspapers of the late 1880s, covered by scrim, then later wallpaper on top, and finally layers of paint over the next 100 years.
The farm was bought by the Gittos family in 1931, who managed milking cows on the land over the next 40 years. They carted cream and milk on a horse and gig down the clay road to meet the cream truck on the main road until 1935 when the last section of the road was laid with metal, helped by the residents. Later in 1978, the family of the current owners purchased and farmed the land as an angora goat farm.
It was here, near the start of his art career,
that NZ artist Julian Dashper painted from an art studio he built on the property. Local potter, the late Madeleine Dashper, also had her pottery studio near the gate in a home now occupied by her granddaughter. Many locals will fondly remember Madeleine’s famous open days every year.
In the last six years the land has been subdivided into seven tranquil and secluded lots on Dashper Drive, off Goatley Road. The old homestead is the last to be sold, and sits on a 9Ha site including 45Ha of beautiful native bush, at 26 Dashper Drive. The house and about 1Ha of the surrounding land can support a substantial new dwelling in addition to the historic homestead, taking advantage of the covenanted bush surrounding it and allowing for the riparian setback.
The homestead itself has been carefully restored to reveal the original hand-sawn Totara match lining, and native Kauri flooring, and is waiting for a deft hand to renovate and perhaps extend the rooms or verandas which
catch the morning and afternoon sun.
Fully rewired with underground power and telecommunications, reroofed, recently repainted and partially insulated, the old house is well supplied with underground bore water, and enjoys views over the land on the Dashper Drive subdivision.
Many unique handmade clay and glass tiles adorn the open fireplace and bathroom, and the garden has established Magnolia, Rimu, Pūriri, Tōtara and Pōhutukawa, with tall Californian Redwoods planted after 1901.
The current owners are looking for a buyer who will love and appreciate the historical design of the homestead, and see the potential in retaining the building as their new home, as a rental, or as a very unique Airbnb, and enjoy the small friendly resident community.
Appointments to view the property can be made via the below website.

THE EMOTIVE NATURE OF ART
Matakana-based abstract impressionist artist Amanda Jane’s landscape and seascape paintings evoke a dreamlike quality.
Inspired by the ever-changing moods of nature, Amanda uses painting to explore the profound impact the environment has on human emotions. Although she always had an interest in painting and drawing, it wasn’t until 2022 that she fully immersed herself in the discipline. “The last two years have been a slow journey of experimentation in a multitude of mediums,” Amanda shares.
Currently focussing her work on oils and raw earth pigments on canvas, Amanda finds satisfaction in these contrasting mediums, despite their polar opposite properties. Sourcing inspiration from her local environment, Omaha Beach and Tawharanui rank high on her muse list, Amanda begins her creative process with a photograph of a skyscape if she’s not working directly from nature.
“I layer the paint gradually to create depth and sometimes add modelling mediums for extra texture. Being a perfectionist, my tendency is to want to replicate the image as best I can, exactly as I see it,” Amanda explains. “However, I try to challenge myself by leaning more towards an abstracted interpretation. Not only because I find the final work more beautiful aesthetically, but at a personal level, it’s far more challenging to achieve overall cohesiveness once it becomes abstracted - and it’s this challenge that becomes the pursuing factor.”
In her quest to further capture the essence of her surroundings, Amanda has embraced Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography. This technique allows her to explore dynamic and fluid representations of ocean vistas, which translate into evocative painting-like images. The movement and abstraction inherent in ICM photography align seamlessly with her artistic vision, helping her distil the beauty of the sky and sea into more dynamic, emotive pieces.
Amanda is excited to announce her first public showing in the gallery space at Charlie’s Gelato in Matakana. The exhibition,
titled Continuum, opens Friday 15 November and runs for two weeks until Sunday 1 December. This event marks a significant milestone in her artistic journey, providing art lovers and the community an opportunity to engage with her work in person. Attendees
will experience first-hand the enchanting atmospheres Amanda creates and the emotional depth they convey.
Bold use of colour, particularly through furniture, can enhance any home. The Capri Sideboard, crafted from solid oak with rift-cut doors, features solid ash timber sides sprayed to add colour, highlighting the texture in t he grain.
NATURAL
Visible signs of nature bring the outdoors in seamlessly. Using the sides of the walnut slab creates a natural live edge feature on this dining table, while modern black steel legs offer the perfect juxtaposition.
Amid a growing desire for natural materials, solid timber’s timeless appeal brings a sense of nature into the home. The unique characteristics of solid wood - knots, black lines, colour variations, tiger stripes, and grain gradation - are all part of its natural charm. EMPOWERING EXPAT AND LOCAL LIVES
Offering coaching, mentoring and mindfulness support, Paula Harrington’s transient life led her to launch her coaching business, serving a global community of expats.
Born in the UK Paula lived and worked in multiple countries before marrying her Kiwi husband. With third-culture kids plus friends and family all over the world, Paula has built a coaching practice tailored for expatriates. With an understanding of the beauty and the challenges that come with living this life, Paula is able to bring a great deal of empathy to her work with a wide range of clients.
Genuinely passionate about working with clients both locally and across the globe, Paula has noticed an increase in clients from her local area of Warkworth and Matakana as her business has grown over the years. While she mainly works one-on-one she has also enjoyed running a pro bono Values & Vision Workshop for the Women's Centre Rodney.
Another of her specialties is working in partnership with highly accomplished professional women, many of whom are business owners. “While they may appear strong and capable from the outside, many
find themselves feeling uncertain about their next steps and future choices,” notes Paula. She provides a safe space for clients to be vulnerable, and their authentic selves, as they recalibrate.
"My clients are often searching for something more or a change," says Paula. “I offer them the opportunity to seek clarity as they re-define what a rich and fulfilling life looks like for them.”
Paula creates a collaborative and nurturing environment for her clients, be it online or face to face, noting “I’m honest with my clients about being far from perfect myself, I’ve made mistakes and I’m a repeat offender in many patterns of behaviour that don’t serve me.” This transparency enables her to create a fun and challenging environment, which Paula loves. “It allows women to have their own awareness and insights, helping them feel empowered to move positively forward and make sustainable change in all areas of their life,” she says.
Paula’s background is in Human Resources and Digital Marketing, working for large corporations, multinationals and small to medium enterprises, and launching her own award-winning online store while living in the Middle East. On returning to live in New Zealand for the second time she consolidated her wealth of experience and knowledge, along with her own personal journey, to become an International Coaching Federation (ICF) trained coach.
Rather than offering off-the-shelf solutions she works intuitively with her clients, providing a great amount of support and resources with a well stocked tool kit as an ICF coach, Mindfulness, Reiki and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) practitioner. Paula is the ideal coach for those navigating the complexities of life abroad and the challenges of reverse culture shock as a returning Kiwi, as well as locals seeking clarity and fulfilment.
Could you benefit from the support and guidance of a coach? Are you:
• Experiencing an increased amount of overwhelm
• Feeling stuck in a pattern of behaviour
• Looking for an accountability partner to help you move forward
• Struggling to find clarity and confidence
• Experiencing a lack of balance in life
• Feeling like you’ve lost your identity
• Wanting to build self confidence and self esteem
• In need of the tools to navigate change and uncertainty

OMAHA WINE AND WILDLIFE DINNER
Thursday 7 November, 6.15pm
The Farmers Daughter
Join the enthralling Dr. Josie Galbraith, ecologist and curator at Auckland Museum, for a relaxed evening of conversation over a two-course dinner and a glass of natural wine on arrival at The Farmers Daughter. Enjoy a night highlighting the importance of the taonga species living in Ōmaha and explore how the community can help protect them, as Dr. Galbraith shares her passion for urban wildlife and conservation. Ōmaha, renowned for its stunning beach and harbour, is also home to a unique range of wildlife. Its diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, sandy beaches, and coastal swamp forests, provide crucial habitats for treasured species. Proximity to Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary and the tireless efforts of community trapping groups has allowed many threatened species to expand into the area, including the North Island Kiwi, which has been spotted on the Ōmaha golf course and beach.
However, kiwi are vulnerable to off-leash
dogs, especially during the day when they sleep. In Northland, dog attacks significantly reduce kiwi lifespans to around 13 years, compared to 40 years elsewhere. To protect them, residents and visitors are urged to follow council bylaws and keep dogs on leash in duneland and forested areas.
The beach is also an important nesting ground for shorebirds like the tūturiwhatu (New Zealand dotterel). Their nests, found on low-lying sandbanks, are easily disturbed by dogs, feet, and vehicles. Disturbance and predation by cats in

As the success of ‘Predator Free’ initiatives increase across the motu, urbanisation and threatened species will continue to overlap. In places such as Ōmaha, residents are lucky to be experiencing this already! Simple actions, like responsible pet ownership, respecting signage, and educating other beachgoers can help protect these precious species.
