World-class walking sticks
From his home in the bush behind Waipū Cove is where Carey designed and now makes walking sticks.
While recovering from hip replacement surgery, Carey struggled to find a good-looking, well-designed walking stick - so he decided to make one himself. Two years later, NZ Walking Sticks was born. Inspired by the mānuka trees fringing his property, the sticks are elegant, strong and durable, topped with an ergonomic, unique aluminium handle which he designed for both form and function.
“The perfect fit is essential,” says Carey, so all sticks are made to measure with clear instructions for fitting your walking stick on his website. Carey is happy to help with this process, saying he enjoys seeing happy customers using his walking sticks, looking and feeling good while making the important everyday choice to be safer and more stable.

WANDERING ANGELS ANIMAL SANCTUARY
As a child, Michele Clarke juggled raising a duckling in Auckland’s suburbia with saving insects from spider webs, foreshadowing what her future would hold.
Words Brooke Sheehan
The 63-year-old founder of Waipu’s Wandering Angels Animal Sanctuary says the pull to rescue was in her bones right from the start. As an adult, Michele entered the corporate world, excelling in sales for nearly 20 years. But working long hours was no deterrent, she continued to rescue in t he evenings.
Raising five daughters with her then husband on a lifestyle block, the family took in livestock, dogs, cats, injured seagulls, a turkey with a broken leg, even a pūkeko. People knew, if an animal was in trouble, take it to Michele. When her children grew, and her marriage ended, she kept rescuing.
Six years ago Michele quit corporate work and began fostering for the Auckland dog rescue, Saving Hope Foundation. Pound dogs changed her life. “I felt the older dogs needed me most, so I started my own rescue to focus on them,” marking the beginning of Wandering Angels. Three years in, the sanctuary has been a beacon of hope for abandoned and surrendered dogs of all ages and breeds, both locally and nationwide. But rescue can eat away at your life, with

so many animals it’s rarely possible for Michele to leave the sanctuary. Yet, she was determined to attend her mother’s 90th birthday recently, a two-hour drive away. She was late but she made it, and also saved a dog from a bullet on the journey home. “Mum won’t be around forever and my kids are so important. I know they’re proud of what I do but I feel I’m not there for them, and I want to be,” says Michele.
Self-talk and her loving partner, Johnny, help Michele navigate through the dark days. “I tell myself I cannot save them all. If you try , you burn out. Every day I wake up knackered,” she says. “Even in corporate, I was jumping on planes and dealing with constant deadlines. Now, I’m lugging round panels, fixing runs and exercising dogs. It’s exhausting.”
Since the pandemic and the increase in surrenders and abandonments, dog rescues have faced immense pressure. Michele says it’s hard finding balance and taking care of herself. “When you’re full, you must be strong and say no. Then, you must deal with that, in your head and your heart, afterwards. When I

know it’s the pound’s euthanasia day, I have a quiet moment, to honour them,” she says.
The new Wandering Angels Golden Years Dog Program is what Michelle’s most proud of. WAGY gives both senior dogs and elderly, or otherwise compromised people, the chance to experience companionship and love without the financial burden. Those who join are carefully matched with a WAGY dog. Healthcare is fully funded, foster support is provided during any hospital stays and Michele asks for only a $200 annual fee to cover dog registration. Plus, if an owner passes away the dog is matched to a new WAGY home.
“I cannot describe how passionate I am about oldies. They need comfortable beds, warmth, love and vet care. They are wonderful companions that truly benefit our mental health,” she says. Growing so big, so quickly, Michele says, the rescue really needs support. “We’re looking for reliable volunteers, and donations are a godsend for us,” she says. FROM VINYL TO VILLAGE - DAN PAINE
Recognisable community member and owner of Matakana Cinemas, Dan Paine, is a creative-minded person, and for years has combined his love of music and film as both a cinema owner and talented DJ.
In his early teenage years, Dan frequented Truetone Records in Newmarket, amassing a collection of cassettes that would profoundly shape his musical tastes. The eclectic mix of titles he acquired, featuring artists like Public Enemy, Happy Mondays, De La Soul, The Cure, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Smiths, are still among his favourites.
Around the late ‘90s, Jonny Pujol, also known as DJ Dozer, recognised Dan's passion for music and encouraged him to start playing records. With Jonny’s already impressive collection and technical talent, Dan dove into the world of DJing with him, frequenting favourite spots like Real Groovy Records and DJ Sir-Vere’s Beat Merchants on Victoria Street West to expand their collection.
After these early years of DJing, Dan was brought on board at Base FM by Manuel Bundy, where he began hosting his Wednesday night show, OFF THE RECORD (OTR), in May 2006.
Still proud of the show, Dan reflects, ”it was unique by being a melting-pot mix of many different styles of music, in keeping with my own personal taste and open musical philosophy, rather than sticking to one or t wo genres.”
Still grateful for the passion and management
of then-owner, Jazz Zieden, Dan felt it was the right time to move on from Base FM when a change of ownership came about in October 2022.
After a mammoth 17-year run on air, he estimates he did around 500 shows and played over 15,000 songs!
Over the years, Dan has amassed a wealth of DJing experiences that span the globe. In 2004 he spent a year living in Kitakyushu, Japan, where he regularly played at Grassroots Bar. Back in Auckland, he ran the Low End Theory club nights at the legendary Rakinos Bar on High Street with Dylan C and Manuel Bundy. The summer of 2015 saw him opening for Joey Bada$$ and Run the Jewels at a packed studio on K'Road. The following summer, he supported Dam Funk at the Auckland City Art Gallery alongside Frank Booker. Dan has also graced the stage at Splore Festival at the Crystal Palace and, more recently, played at Shipwrecked Festival in Te Arai.
Locally, Dan was a regular at the Leigh Sawmill Café throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Among his career highlights are the Summertime Rolls gigs, which he ran for a couple of summers.
These events featured Electric Wire Hustle,
Kolab, Dylan C, Manuel Bundy, and himself, creating unforgettable parties that have become a cherished part of his DJing journey. And while he'll be the first to tell you that he's not a DJ who gravitates towards playing 'the hits,' making him an unconventional choice for weddings, one of his most recent highlights was DJing at Wendy and Brett’s "Brendyfest" wedding, featured in the May issue of Junction.
Working in a creative environment at the cinema, Dan is surrounded by smiling people enjoying themselves daily, creating the positive energy that he thrives on. He also finds joy in occasional bar gigs with DJ friends and house parties, where the atmosphere is intimate and energetic.
Crediting DJ Dozer for introducing him to DJing and teaching him the basics, DJ Jellyfish for the joy of playing music in tandem, Cian for his impeccable musical taste and tips, Dylan C for his seamless mixing and mind-blowing sets, and Manuel Bundy for his standout music selection and immaculate technique. Dan considers himself lucky to count these talented individuals as friends and remains true to his guiding principle as a DJ, “to just play music th at I love.”

MAY TWELVE STUDIO
A creative journey founded on a lifelong passion for art, enriched by an extensive background in fashion and homeware design, and transformed by loss.
In November 2021, Jenni Brabant and her family made the move from the bustling city of Melbourne to the peaceful Matakana area. They fell in love with the laidback lifestyle and the warm, welcoming community, quickly feeling like they belonged. The coastal landscapes and beautiful beaches of the local area have provided inspiration for her art and the founding of May Twelve Studio.
Hailing from Manchester in the United Kingdom, Jenni's love for art and creativity date back to her earliest memories. Attending art and design school, she experimented with various different mediums including painting, sculpture, and illustration before specialising in fashion design, where she spent over 10 years in the fashion industry designing womenswear.
Outside of work, her love for art never waned. She often attended drawing classes and joined art groups in her spare time, always finding ways to express herself creatively. Switching from fashion design to homewares and wall art was a major career shift for her. For the past seven years, she's had the opportunity to design art prints and wall art for wellknown international retailers like Next UK, Bouclair CAN, Farmers NZ, Pillow Talk, and Temple&Webster AUS.
In early 2024, after experiencing the sudden loss of her mum, she founded M ay Twelve Stud io. "I turned to painting as an outlet for my grief, and it soon became a form of therapy for me,” says Jenni. Her art draws inspiration from vintage posters and postcards, each with a unique story told through its worn textures. “I have a love of all things vintage, items worn with a past life that tell a story,” she notes. Combined with natural textures and a deep love for the beach and ocean, her work transports viewers to tropical coastal getaways and a feeling of endless summer. She loves experimenting with different mediums, using acrylic paints and sand textures on canvas and fine art papers. Creating pieces that reflect the natural beauty of nature, the calming presence of the ocean, and the coastal landscapes she now calls home.
Today, you can find her art and art prints available for purchase online on her website or at Caro With Love in Mangawhai. Each piece not only tells a story of her artistic journey but also reflects her passion for capturing nostalgia, nature, and the tropical coastal beauty of N ew Zealand that continues to inspire her. www.MayTwelveStudio.com www.instagram.com/MayTwelve_Studio
ART BY THE RIVER
When Sally and Grant Marshall decided to sell their Matakana Village based business, Matakana Home, and open a new art gallery in Warkworth, their first consideration was what will it be called?
The answer lay right at the doorstep of the new premises, or more accurately the back door. Salt River Gallery, is named as a nod to Warkworth’s most unique feature, the tidal Mahurangi River which runs through the middle of town, and from both a physical and historical sense defines the town and provides it with a living, beating heart. Grant says it reminds him of the title of the famous nineties film, A River Runs Through It. Before opening two other successful art galleries Sally and Grant had a long history in both the film and the advertising industries. Grant worked as a creative director for national and international advertising agencies and then as a commercials director for clients in New Zealand and around the world where he specialised in dialogue and comedy working with artists like Billy Connolly, Alexi Sayle and Timothy Spall.
Today Grant still keeps his hand in the creative business as a graphic designer, creative brand consultant and stills photographer working for large real estate developments, magazine and book publishing clients, and pursuing his personal photography which he sells to clients all over New Zealand and the world via Instagram and at the gallery.
Sally worked as a film and television producer and as CEO of Auckland agency Spearhead Communications. The pair discovered and cast a young Rachel Hunter in the famous Tip Top Trumpet commercial directed by Grant. Over the last 17 years she has operated a number of Matakana Village’s favourite stores.
Salt River Gallery is a unique, inspirational environment featuring an extensive, everchanging portfolio of curated artworks from some of New Zealand’s most recognised
and established artists. It is a must visit destination for anyone who appreciates quality contemporary art, showing original paintings, large format prints, photography, drawings, ceramics and sculptures.
The Marshalls also offer Art and Design consultancy, providing vast experience and creative advice to assist clients with simplifying their art purchase decisions. A recent large art installation they undertook involved over 50 works of art for The Grove Apartments at Orewa Beach.
Salt River Gallery is located in the N.A.F. building by the roundabout at the bottom of Neville Street in Warkworth’s vibrant shopping and hospitality precinct. Open every day except Monday from 10am to 4pm, Sally and Grant look forward to welcoming you. www.SaltRiverGallery.co.nz www.instagram.com/SaltRiverGallery
AIRBRUSH ARTISTRY
Award-winning artist, Colin Unkovich, specialises in original airbrushed artwork inspired by the landscape, coast and people of New Zealand.
A dedicated airbrush artist since 1970, Colin brings a unique passion and precision to his craft. His finely detailed contemporary artworks are characterised by smooth transitions of colour, giving each piece a unique feel and sense of mood. Despite its slow and painstaking nature, airbrushing lends a remarkable quality to the subject matter, a technique Colin has mastered through self-teaching. He has developed specialised methods to emphasise the interplay of light and shadow, giving his work an almost sculptural quality. Inspired by the natural forms of New Zealand, especially the coast and its distinctive light, Colin’s art captures fleeting moments with stu nning clarity.
“I consider myself to be extremely fortunate in that I don’t have to look very far for inspiration or motivation for my work,” Colin reflects. The physical location of his studio allows him to continue to develop his own particular style. Noting that artists all tend to be affected by their surroundings, often
showing through in the end product, Colin says, “this is certainly true for me.” Trying to capture the moods of our New Zealand coastline is both a challenging and very pleasurable endeavour for Colin. “I find that using the airbrush as my painting tool lends a smooth, almost mellow quality. Airbrush painting is a less common artist's medium than some others, partly I think because it is so time intensive, but it is exactly this which makes the end result so special,” he says.
Colin’s technique involves applying many translucent layers of paint to achieve the desired shades that he seeks. This method, rather than mixing an exact colour from the start, gives his work vibrancy and an almost inner glow, as light reflects and refracts off different levels of colour. Though slow, Colin
believes the process is worth the effort. His goal is to create paintings that bring visual pleasure and convey a true sense of the subject, while allowing enough room for individual interpretation, engaging the viewer's imagination.
Colin’s work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions across New Zealand and is part of collections in New Zealand, the UK, America, Asia, and Europe. He was a finalist in the Adam’s Portraiture Awards in 2010, won the Northland Art Awards for Painting in 2013, and received the People’s Choice Award at the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Art Awards in 2013.

HEMY POTTERY
In the quaint and picturesque town of Whangateau, a converted barn has become the at-home-pottery-studio of ceramic artist Hannah Mills.
Having grown up in the area Hannah moved to the big city for a few years, eventually returning to enjoy a more laid-back way of life. Based in Whangateau for two years now, she loves living and working in the area again. “It is so peaceful and uplifting to be surrounded by nature and bird calls while I work,” s ays Hannah.
In 2021, Hannah unearthed a newfound passion for pottery, embarking on a journey to craft fun, happy, colourful pieces designed to brighten people's lives and homes. Inspired by her initials, she launched 'Hemy Pottery' as a small business during lockdown, dedicating herself to handcrafting each piece on her wheel or through meticulous hand-building and painting. “It gave me so much joy and something productive to focus on during the rough times of lockdown,” s he reflects.
Hannah is driven by her passion to spread joy and wants to continue to share the happiness her craft brings her by creating pieces that bring smiles to people's faces. “It absolutely makes my day when someone's face lights up upon seeing my stall at a market,” she shares. “Hearing how much happiness my pieces can bring to people makes all the hard work and long hours totally worth it.”
Hannah's upbeat nature and energy shines through in her creations, which feature playful shapes and vibrant paintings. “When people meet me at a market, they will often say how perfectly I match my work, which is the nicest compliment,” she adds. Her colourful dinnerware range includes popular items such as unique tumblers and mugs, some adorned with positive affirmations to start the day right. “My current favourite mugs are my animal themed ones, being a huge animal lover

myself,” she notes. Beyond dinnerware, she also crafts vases, jewellery holders, spoon rests, and more.
Conscious of our environment, Hannah strives to keep her business eco-friendly and sustainable by only using recyclable packaging. She also notes one of the best things about working with clay is that anything unused is then recycled into new art istic creations.

Since their launch in February 2018, MEAN BRGR has garnered a reputation for serving some of the area's most acclaimed burgers. Scott and Amanda, fondly known as Mr. and Mrs. MEAN, relocated from London to Mangawhai in late 2016 to be closer to family and pursue their passion for burgers as a potential business venture.
Their move culminated in the birth of MEAN BRGR, a venture that required extensive planning and effort, from developing their current location on Wood Street to overseeing the design and construction of their distinctive commercial kitchen, housed in a

When it comes to their menu, MEAN BRGR stays true to their ethos of freshness and quality. They prepare their beef patties daily in-house using primal beef cuts, source only free-range chicken and fresh fish, and have their own specially baked buns - everything is fresh except for their fries, which is the only menu item they freeze.

GROWING AND HOMESTEADING - WAIONEHU WILD
Nestled on their family farm in Waipu, established in 1893, Grant and Sharlene Russell have cultivated a thriving homesteading business born from a vision of sustainability and community.
Inspired by their time living with their four children on the South Coast of NSW, a nearby heritage property's market garden, ménage of animals, farm tours and workshops, encouraged Grant and Sharlene to dream of a sustainable and profitable set up at their family farm back in New Zealand. Upon their return in 2022, with one of their children recovering from a serious brain injury, the couple embraced a new chapter after Grant left his shipping career and Sharlene sold her florist shop.
Their journey began with revitalising an old
beetroot relish, and pickled gherkins made using an old family recipe.
Improving soil health, chemical-free growing, seasonality and reducing waste are important to Grant and Sharlene. The fruit from trees planted generations before are picked and used as ingredients in products, reflecting their passion to waste-free farming. While a passion for sourdough bread and fermenting has led to workshops, where they share their knowledge to an overwhelmingly positive response from the community.
Adding to their repertoire, Sharlene crafts a range of lifestyle products using natural and organic ingredients. Soap, body oil, bath salts, and scented wax wardrobe tablets are all showcased at local markets and their online farm shop. “The response to what we are doing and making has been amazing and we are so thankful to the local community for supporting us. Life is busier than ever!”
The Russells are also dedicated to environmental stewardship, replanting native species along waterways bordering the farm to encourage bees and wildlife, reduce erosion and to improve water quality in the Waionehu stream, for which their venture is named after. Their future plans include expanding their farm tours, cultivating a wildflower garden, installing beehives, building a farm shop, tea garden, edible garden and food forest, and possibly hosting long table 'paddock to plate' events.
Discover Waionehu Wild's offerings at Waipu Boutique Sunday Market, Marsden Cove Marina, Mangawhai Tavern Markets, or their online farm shop where you can explore workshops, browse products, and learn more about Waionehu Wild.

ROADSIDE DELIGHTS
Down an unassuming avenue in Algies Bay, next to an idyllic picnic spot and surrounded by hibiscus flowers and edible gardens, stands a small yet mighty honesty stall, The Rootstock Larder.
Fresh produce, vintage cookbooks, and delicious homegrown, handcrafted preserves and condiments line the shelves of this charming roadside haunt. Kaffir Lime and Chilli Jam, Feijoa and Date Kasundi, Lemon and Toasted Fennel Salt and Algies Bay Mandarin Chocolate Sauce are just a few of the garden-inspired goodies Rootstock founder and chief chutney-maker, Tess Lenart, has created.
Described as “Michelin star-level,” by a local radio host, the products available in this beautifully put-together stall pack a punch, and Philippa Potaka, Director at local Matakana food business, Village Picnic, agrees. The Rootstock Larder is one of the exclusive suppliers for their Mystery Picnic scavenger hunt experience and Rootstock chutneys will soon feature on Village Picnic’s new catering concept – a Curated Charcuterie and Cheese Cart for hire, supporting local artisans like Rootstock.
While she’ll always love chutney and cheese,
Tess has plans to grow Rootstock beyond a roadside stall. With a 20-plus-year career in food in various shapes and forms, Tess has a wealth of knowledge and is passionate about her subject. Her Instagram account is a feast for the eyes and, at its heart, a celebration of produce-driven, homestyle cooking.
As well as updating the community with the latest stall products and happenings, Tess shares classic and innovative seasonal recipes, kitchen hacks, clever ideas for feasting with friends, simple weeknight dinners, parties and family-friendly meals –
all inspired by her garden, family, travels, the region, and a lifetime of cooking and eating exceptional food.
Rootstock products are available to purchase at The Rootstock Larder weekly from Friday to Sunday at 41 Willjames Avenue, Algies Bay, or can be shipped nationwide. Follow on Instagram to keep up-to-date with new and seasonal products and for kitchen and garden inspiration.

A ROADMAP TO EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE
Therapist, Social Worker and Leigh-local, Melanie Torkington’s first book combines her down-to-earth warmth and wit with her expertise to create a transformative self-therapy handbook.
With over 20 years experience in the w ell-being and psychology sector, Melanie has worked in various capacities, from social work and therapy to managing social services and running a well-being studio. Her passion for delivering high-quality, individualised therapy led her to establish Time and Space Therapy and Consulting in 2021, specialising in trauma, emotionally focused therapy (EFT) and eye‐movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR).
Melanie’s career journey, combined with her personal experiences and the demands of a growing family, inspired her to find creative ways to share her therapeutic skills. This inspiration culminated in the creation o f her book.
In ‘What the F*ck is Wrong with Me?: The SelfTherapy Handbook,’ Melanie addresses the pervasive question many of us face amidst
life's pressures. Rather than seeing this question as a declaration of defeat, Melanie reframes it as a doorway to understanding, growth, and ultimately s elf-love.
Through candid anecdotes, practical exercises, and insightful reflections, Melanie offers a roadmap for exploring the human mind. Her relatable and humorous tone makes complex psychological concepts accessible, empowering readers to expand their ‘Window of Tolerance,’ a psychological framework that helps navigate the ebb and flow of emotional states, and embrace the full spectrum of human experience.
Drawing upon principles from psychology, neuroscience, and mindfulness, the book guides readers to understand their ‘Window of Tolerance’ to assess and address stressors, recognise signs of imbalance, and develop strategies for returning to a state of balance.
It focuses on building resilience, changing undesirable behaviours, cultivating healthy habits, and decluttering emotional burdens to allow more capacity for love and joy. These skills not only enhance self-management but also improve understanding of others, making it a vital tool for fostering healthier relationships.
“My aim in creating this resource is to promote self-efficacy and to equip generations of self-healers with the tools needed,” says Melanie. She believes a life of balance, connection, self-love, and at least some level of inner peace, isn’t too much to ask for. ‘What the F*ck is Wrong with Me?’ is available now on Amazon and Kobo.

HOLISTIC WELLNESS
Long-term Whangateau resident, Ali Wilford is a dedicated degree-qualified naturopath and medical herbalist. Her story is one of transformation, resilience, and a deep-seated passion for holistic wellness.
Awarded ‘Best Clinical Practitioner’ and currently pursuing postgraduate studies in performance nutrition, health coaching, and clinical nutrition, Ali’s life hasn’t always been so motivated and serene. During her late teens and twenties, Ali battled clinical depression, a struggle that not only shaped her life but also gave her profound insights into the human psyche.
This personal journey fueled her mission to create what she couldn’t find during her own times of need - a holistic space where individuals feel deeply heard and understood. Through Invoke Wellness she is committed to offering science-backed tools, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, and coaching to help her clients build strong, resilient well-being and step into their true potential.
Ali believes that stress is the strongest influence on our health, closely followed by diet. In a world rife with misleading
information about diet and wellness, she hopes to combat this by sharing her expertise. Ali’s philosophy is that the body innately knows what to do, and her role is to help clients learn to tune into their natural rhythms. “Get the basics right and everything else falls into place,’ she says.
Rejecting the instant gratification model often promoted by conventional medicine, she emphasises that wellness is a journey of small, consistent steps. Her comprehensive wellness plans consider all aspects of health,
including social relationships, environmental factors, nutrition, medical history, personal backstory, financial situation, stress, sleep, personality, and health goals.
Ali’s unique approach engages and motivates people to change by offering simple, practical steps throughout their wellness journey. Passionate about uncovering and addressing underlying issues, she helps her clients navigate through their health challenges with compassion.
Discover the root cause of your health concerns and optimise your wellbeing.

A fervent advocate for natural remedies, she has a deep affinity for herbal medicine and plants of all kinds, resulting in her daughter fondly calling her ‘crazy plant lady’. Alongside her husband, Ali is regenerating a once weed-infested 5-acre block into a thriving nature reserve, having planted 7,000 native plants in just th ree years.
Embark on a path to true wellness, guided by someone who understands the journey deeply. Ali’s services range from one-off prescriptions of herbs or supplements to comprehensive wellness audits, which typically span two to six appointments. ESCAPE TO NATURETHE HAYLOFT
The Tapora peninsula, nestled in the heart of the Kaipara Harbour, offers expansive horizons, dark skies, and nature.
Discovered by James and David in 2020 during their own search for tranquillity, this unspoilt location is just an hour north of Auckland, making it the perfect city escape. The Hayloft, lovingly crafted by the couple, is surrounded by avocado orchards and offers a unique farm stay experience with an organic twist.
The journey to establish this retreat wasn’t without its challenges. Cyclone Gabrielle ravaged the surrounding area and destroyed the original farm building, but James and David were determined to rebuild. Using recycled materials from the original structure, they have created a new, architecturally designed farmhouse that exudes modern rural chic. Wrapped in scoria-red corrugated steel, the building
also pays homage to the pioneering barns of the surrounding historic Alb ertland district.
The Hayloft offers a range of thoughtful amenities. The outdoor bathroom, lined with Baltic Pine and immersed in an organic herb garden, includes a bathtub perfect for soaking in the view of the Milky Way in this dark sky location. Inside, the cosy farmhouse features a king-size sleeping loft designed for the quietest, restful sleep one c an experience.
Beyond the farm, the Kaipara region offers a wealth of outdoor activities. Manukapua Island, the largest sand dune island in New Zealand and its bird sanctuary, is just five minutes away. Other nearby attractions include Birds Beach,
the charming Tapora Golf Club, and the walking tracks and bridle paths of Atiu Creek Regional Park. For a taste of local fare, the Port Albert General Store offers fresh coffee and Kaipara fish and chips, while the northern hotspots of Mangawhai and Matakana, known for their brunch spots, markets, and wine tasting, are a short 30-minute drive away.
James and David are excited to share their slice of paradise with visitors as they continue work on new projects to expand their organic vision at Tapora. Bookings can be made at Riparide - The Hayloft Relaxing Coastal Retreat, and stay tuned on Instagram for an exclusive giveaway.

Welcome to Mahurangi College
Pride in self, pride in their school, this is their place.
Mahurangi College is an incredibly warm, friendly and inclusive school. The calm and purposeful environment and excellent behaviour are always noted by visitors to the school. Staff and students enjoy what they do together.
They encourage prospective families to attend their Open Day to hear more about their exciting approach, visit some classes, and get a feel for the culture.
Over the last 4+ years, Mahurangi College has developed a vibrant knowledgerich curriculum, supported by explicit teaching and underpinned by the science of learning. This aligns with the new government direction - in actual fact, they are well ahead of most NZ schools in moving to this approach.
The curriculum ensures students are taught
the ‘best that has been thought and said’, purposefully sequenced from Year 7 to 13, so that students have the knowledge and skills to excel in their senior years at school. They ensure the basics are secured first, employing a mastery approach to set strong foundations to enable future success.
With this in mind, Mahurangi College teaches powerful knowledge so that students can understand, access and influence society. But, they also teach critiques of knowledge - to empower students to contest ideas and argue or debate from a position of knowledge.
Students love their classes - they feel accomplished and clever, and approach learning with confidence.
